Makati has three new robotic firefighters

THE Makati City government has acquired three units of the Rosenbauer Smart Firefighting Robot to enhance the city's modern emergency response capabilities.

Mayor Abigail Binay said in a statement yesterday that the robots provide an alternative method to assist in fire suppression and rescue efforts, particularly in high-risk incidents involving hazardous materials, thereby reducing the risk to rescuers' lives.

The smart firefighting robots will assist our response teams in managing complex and dangerous situations more effectively through advanced features that compensate for human limitations,” she said.

According to Mayor Binay, each robot is designed to withstand extreme heat, poor visibility, and hazardous environments. They are equipped with an acoustic warning device that emits audible signals during operations to alert nearby personnel.

With a maximum payload capacity of 600 kilograms, the robot can function as a mobile platform to drag injured responders or trapped civilians out of danger, minimizing the need to send additional personnel into hazardous zones.

Mayor Binay also highlighted that

The Senate as an impeachment court will convene on Wednesday.

Villanueva's motions followed that of Senate Minority Floor Leader Senator Aquilino Pimentel III who moved for the Upper Chamber to immediately convene as an impeachment court.

"The root cause of this is the apprehension of our people based on recent pronouncements and developments that there will be no impeachment trial against Vice President Sara Duterte," Pimentel said before Villanueva's motions were adopted.

Pimentel said the language of the 1987 Constitution was unequivocal, citing Article XI, Section 3(4) which states that once the House transmits the articles of impeachment with a vote of one-third of its members, “trial by the Senate shall forthwith proceed.”

“The word ‘forthwith’ means without delay – agad-agad (immediately).

Former Senator and incoming Mamamayang Liberal party-list representative Leila de Lima added: "The trial must be conducted to see whether VP Sara is guilty or not. Suppression of truth is unacceptable.”

Secretary Juan Edgardo Angara also oversaw the orientation of 200 newly hired public school teachers, a vital component of the Department of Education’s preparations for the academic year 2025. Marcos thanked the teachers for taking on the noble duty of being educators. He said his administration would provide support “not only through financial means but also through retraining. “We are also reducing administrative duties —those kinds of things —so you can focus on teaching better,” he said.

The President was joined by his youngest son, William Vincent, during the school visits.

the robots feature remote-controlled mobility operated via dual joysticks, allowing for rapid deployment in highrisk scenarios such as commercial fires, confined space rescues, and other complex emergencies. The robots' turrets can discharge between 1,500 to 3,500 liters of water per minute at a pressure of 10 bar, with a vertical reach of up to 80 feet.

“We recognize that being a smart city isn’t just about going digital; it’s about using technology to keep people safe and save lives during emergencies,” she emphasized.

Under Mayor Binay’s administration, Makati has continuously modernized its disaster response equipment, procuring various mobile command and emergency response vehicles and gear.

This includes four mobile command vehicles, one advanced mobile emergency communication vehicle, one aerial fire ladder truck, one super tanker, two chemical fire trucks, two rescue trucks, two Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) trailers, ten rescue boats, two mobile kitchens, thirteen basic life sup-

There is no ‘if,’ no ‘unless,’ and no ‘when convenient,'" he added.

In a parallel manifestation, Senate Deputy Minority Leader Risa Hontiveros seconded Pimentel’s motion.

“The Constitution is clear. The trial must begin immediately. Walang pag-iimbot. Agad-agad (Without selfinterest. Immediately),” she said, adding that “anyone who objects to commencing the trial is objecting to the Constitution itself.”

“I am here before you to also appeal to the deeper purpose of the law. And the spirit of the impeachment power is unmistakable: it is accountability. It is to ensure that no public officer, however powerful, is above the Constitution…This process must not be rendered impotent through procedural subterfuge.”

The impeachment complaint accuses the Vice President of grave offenses, including betrayal of public trust, culpable violation of the Constitution, conspiracy to commit murder, misuse of confidential funds, and unexplained wealth.

Lima added.

Earlier, retired SC Associate Justice Adolfo Azcuna, a framer of the 1986 Constitution who drafted, in particular, Article XI which states that the impeachment trial must proceed “forthwith,” said the articles of impeachment received by the Senate in the 19th Congress will not lapse and should be carried over to the 20th Congress.

“It is precisely meant to mean immediately and without unreasonable delay or in the national language official version, ‘agad-agad,’” Azcuna said.

The protest actions are set to continue until June 11, the date set by Senate President Francis Escudero for the submission of the articles of impeachment.

Villegas, for his part, said delaying the impeachment trial further was “deplorable.”

"It is wrong to delay or abort it – it is sinfully wrong. It offends truth and justice," the Catholic prelate said.

"To deprive the people of the full truth is a form of robbery. It is keeping something not yours," Villegas added.

The government has hired 20,000 additional teachers for the coming school year to ensure that they can focus more on their primary task instead of doing administrative duties, Marcos said.

Teachers are the “real heroes” whom Filipinos can depend on,” he said.

Marcos also noted that school comfort rooms were wanting of improvements notably reliable water supply.

The Chief Executive also visited Tibagan Elementary School in San Miguel, Bulacan, where he inspected classroom repairs and witnessed a series of school readiness activities.

port ambulances, three motorcycles, and two mobile clinics. In 2022, Makati was designated the first-ever Resilience Hub in the Philippines and Southeast Asia by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR).

Pimentel said the Senate had already lost four months without a valid justification since the impeachment complaint was transmitted by the House on February 5.

“We had a choice every step of the way —and our choice was to delay,” Pimentel said.

“Trial is the most fair course of action. Let the evidence be heard. Let the Vice President defend herself. That is what the Constitution demands,” he said.

Earlier in the day, Escudero said the Senate will fulfill its constitutional obligations on the impeachment proceedings based on law and due process, not public or political pressure.

“They want us to rush our constitutional duty. We will fulfill it, but not at the exact time they demand just because they are in a hurry. No one said we would not carry it out, but as I’ve stated, this is a process that must be followed, not on their timeline, and not at their chosen moment,” he said.

“If we followed their wishes, it could give the accused, Vice President

The MBC said the impeachment process was not only a matter of legal procedure but also a critical test of governance and public accountability.

“If we do not follow the rule of law, how can we expect to attract foreign and even local investors to bring in long-term investments, which would lead to the creation of jobs?” the group said in a statement.

“The Senators, individually, and the Senate, as an institution, will betray public trust and deny the Vice President the forum to refute the charges if they do not proceed,” MBC said.

The Catholic Educational Association of the Philippines (CEAP) added: “To our Senators, this is a call for personal transcendence - transcend your personal and political interests, and fight for truth and justice. This was your vow when we elected you.”

The National Council of Churches in the Philippines (NCCP) likewise strongly urged the Senate to ensure that the rule of law takes precedence over political considerations.

We have started deploying more police or what we call 'Cops on the Beat,'" said the President in his "BBMVLOG #270: Mga Pagbabago."

"We are also working on this emergency hotline and I am sure that in just a few weeks, maybe in July, we will be able to launch it," President Marcos said.

The President also cited new Philippine National Police Chief Gen. Nicolas Torre III's campaign for increased police visibility and a five-minute response time in case of an emergency.

It’s not about whether she would benefit or not, but because it could trigger a constitutional crisis where the Court might be forced to stop the Senate from continuing its work,” Escudero added.

Senator Robinhood Padilla, a known Duterte ally, yesterday filed a resolution seeking to declare the impeachment proceedings against the Vice President as terminated.

"It is indubitably clear that the matter of the Articles of Impeachment against Vice-President Sara Zimmerman Duterte and its consideration by the present Senate cannot be fully accomplished by the expiration of the Nineteenth Congress on 30 June 2025, thereby resulting in its termination," he said in Senate Resolution No. 1371.

Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino also voiced strong opposition to carrying over the proceedings into the 20th Congress.

The NCCP is a fellowship of 10 Protestant and non-Roman Catholic Churches in the Philippines denominations, and 10 service-oriented organizations in the Philippines.

“We are also deeply alarmed by the Vice President’s public declarations of threats and killings, statements that are inappropriate and unbecoming of such a leader, in such an honorable position entrusted with serving the people,” the group added.

The Student Council Alliance of the Philippines (SCAP) said Escudero was “setting a bad example for the youth” amid the delays in the impeachment trial.

“This is a democratic mechanism to hold officials accountable who violate the trust of the people and the Constitution. And if the Senate won't take this seriously, what good are our institutions?” SCAP said.

Rep. Arlene Brosas of Gabriela party-list said Escudero, as a lawyer, knows what the 1987 Constitution states on matters pertaining to the impeachment.

and Central Visayas.

The Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) said the emergency hotline utilizes cutting-edge technology to ensure a quick response from frontline units, such as the PNP and the Bureau of Fire Protection, while screening prank and nuisance calls.

During the vlog, the President also listened to some feedback about the renewed police presence in the streets, and noted the considerable service to the public when they feel secure.

One college student said: "We will be more comfortable to walk alone, knowing that there are police officers surrounded by you.”

Another woman said: “When we ask the police, we know we are secure.”

President Marcos’ order to keep the public safe against crime is part of his administration’s focus on making life easier for the public.

extrajudicial killings, offshore gaming operations, land fraud, identity falsification, and espionage.

The proposed measures included House Bill (HB) 10986 (Anti-Extrajudicial Killing Act), HB 10987 (AntiOffshore Gaming Operations Act), HB 11043 (Civil Forfeiture Act), HB 11117 (Fraudulent Birth Certificate Cancellation Law), and HB 10998 (Espionage Law of 2024).

Manila Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr., co-chair of the Quad Comm and chairman of the House Committee on Human Rights, could not attend the session but had his opening statement delivered by Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong. Abante, in his remarks, identified the measures resulting from the Quad Comm’s investigation into human rights violations and transnational crimes tied to the outlawed POGO operations.

"We have heard accounts that chilled the soul – of lives discarded like refuse, of uniforms used to conceal lawlessness, of badges used as instruments of fear," noted.

"But we did not turn away. We listened. We dug deep. And, most importantly, we acted. We did not just listen, we don't just pity, but we also act," he added in a mix of English and Filipino.

Abante said these legislative results were proof that congressional oversight can be a path to national correction, while commending the whistleblowers and civilian witnesses who risked their safety to testify. In the same hearing, Santa Rosa City Rep. Dan Fernandez said owners of buildings, resorts, condominiums, and hotels where Chinese nationals operate their POGO hubs should be held equally liable for unlawful activities taking place in their properties,

“I think those who own these properties know that... There should be responsibility on their part as well di ba (isn't it)?” Fernandez, chairman of the House Committee on Public Order and Safety told Philippine National Police (PNP) and Presidential AntiOrganized Crime Commission (PAOCC) officials during the Quadcom hearing.

Fernandez also called attention to recent raids conducted by PAOCC, the PNP, and other agencies at a resort on Alabat Island, Quezon, at the Yuchengco Tower on Ayala Avenue in Makati City and at a Pasay City Hotel. Quoting news reports, he said 42 Chinese nationals were arrested in Alabat, while 188 Chinese citizens were taken into custody in the Yuchengco Tower raid.

Most Pinoys believe VP Sara needs to go on trial—OCTA

MAJORITY of Filipinos want Vice President Sara Duterte to face her long-delayed impeachment trial at the Senate with 78 percent saying she should respond to all charges leveled against her, according to the latest Tugon ng Masa survey by OCTA Research, Inc.

OCTA released its findings early Monday, June 9, 2025, as several Catholic faith-based groups, civil society organizations, and progressive

political parties prepare to launch a prayer rally aimed at convincing senators in the 19th Congress to fulfill their constitutional duty.

LPA could turn into ‘Auring’ as ‘habagat’ pours more rain

THE Philippines will continue to experience moderate to heavy rains across different parts of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao largely attributed to the effects of the southwest monsoon or ‘habagat,’ the Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said.

PAGASA forecast yesterday occasional rains on several provinces in Luzon, including Zambales, Bataan, Cavite, Batangas, Occidental Mindoro, Palawan, as well as Antique in Western Visayas. Cloudy skies with scattered rains and thunderstorms remain for Metro Manila, Bicol, the rest of Visayas, Central Luzon, Mimaropa and Calabarzon. Mindanao, meanwhile, will experience partly cloudy to cloudy skies with isolated rain showers or thunderstorms. The low-pressure area (LPA),

which meteorologists have been monitoring since last week, has moved near Baler, Aurora and Bacnotan, La Union. It is threatening the Ilocos Region, Abra and Benguet with PAGASA not ruling out its likelihood of developing into a tropical storm that will be named ‘Auring.’

Elsewhere in the country, localized thunderstorms are affecting weather conditions. PAGASA urges residents in all areas with moderate to heavy rainfall outlook to stay alert and take the necessary precautions against possible environmental hazards. Meanwhile, the Office of Civil Defense (OCD) has issued an urgent call on Monday to all local government units (LGUs) in Western Visayas to promptly assess, upgrade, and reinforce their flood control systems. The agency warned that failure to act could result in severe consequences, especially in low-lying and landslide-prone communities. with Rex Espiritu

“A large majority—78%—believe that Vice President Duterte should face a Senate or impeachment trial to answer the charges and clear her name. Only 13% disagreed, while 9% were undecided,” the survey firm said in its report.

OCTA also highlighted that 91 percent of adult Filipinos who participated in the survey conducted from April 20 to 24, 2025 are aware of the impeachment cases filed against the second highest public

official, indicating strong interest in the issue.

“Awareness levels vary across regions, ranging from 83% to 96%. The highest awareness is recorded in Mindanao (96%), while the lowest is in the Visayas (83%),” the report said.

Awareness is notably higher among the upper socioeconomic classes, although those who identified in the lower brackets also registered in the 90-percent level: Classes ABC (95%), Class E (96%), and Class D (90%).

IN BRIEF

DepEd-Western Visayas intros new SHS curriculum

ILOILO CITY – The Department of Education (DepEd) in Western Visayas is piloting the revised Senior High School (SHS) curriculum in 170 public schools across the region, including Negros Occidental, starting this school year.

According to DepEd-Western Visayas information officer Hernani Escullar Jr., 55 schools from Panay and Guimaras and 115 from various divisions in Negros Occidental met the department’s qualifications for the pilot run.

The new SHS curriculum streamlines the previous four tracks into just two— Academic and Technical-Professional (Tech-Pro)—and reduces the number of subjects from 31 to 20–23, depending on the strand.

Students in the academic track will take seven electives, including a capstone project, while those in the tech-pro track will complete three electives and a work immersion. Elective offerings will vary based on the learner’s chosen strand.

Only Grade 11 students will participate in the pilot, with Grade 12 learners retaining the current curriculum. Selection criteria for schools included the variety of elective offerings, teacher qualifications, and facility readiness. Caloy Lozada

N. Samar’s Biri Rocks declared nat’l monument

THE iconic Biri Rock formations in Northern Samar have been officially recognized as a National Geological Monument by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources–National Committee on Geological Sciences (DENR-NCGS).

UNESCO National Commission of the Philippines secretary general Dr. Ivan Anthony Henares said the designation celebrates the site’s geological significance and could bring inclusive economic benefits to local communities.

Biri Rocks comprises seven islets— Magasang, Magsapad, Macadlao, Puhunan, Bel-at, Caranas, and Inanahawan—featuring tilted sedimentary rock formations sculpted by tectonic and wave processes over 15 to 20 million years.

The rocks also contain rare volcanic components such as phonolite and analcime clasts, offering insights into the magmatic history of Northern Samar, according to experts from the NCGS.

With the new status, Biri Rocks joins six other nationally recognized geological monuments and is now being proposed for designation as a UNESCO Global Geopark. Ronald O. Reyes

Korean arrivals lead PH tourism in 2024-BI

SOUTH Korean nationals remained the top source of international visitors to the Philippines in 2024, with a total of 1,761,281 arrivals recorded by the Bureau of Immigration (BI).

BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado highlighted the strong Philippines–South Korea relationship, noting that Korean visitors are drawn by both natural attractions and the country’s English education programs.

To boost educational tourism, the BI introduced an online application system for the Special Study Permit (SSP), making it easier for foreign students, including Koreans, to take short-term courses in the country.

Viado also underscored the agency’s partnership with Korean authorities in intelligence-sharing, crime monitoring, and emergency response, reinforcing the safety and trust of Korean nationals.

The BI remains aligned with the Department of Tourism’s zero-tolerance policy against crimes targeting tourists and is committed to modernizing border procedures to ensure safe and seamless travel. Vito Barcelo

‘9,000 Chinese nationals from POGOs still in PH’

AN estimated 9,000 to 10,000 Chinese nationals who previously worked in now-closed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGO) hubs remain in the country, the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) revealed on Monday.

PAOCC Undersecretary Gilbert Cruz told the House Quad Committee that enforcement operations against these illegal foreign workers had been temporarily suspended due to overcrowding in detention facilities.

“Due to overcrowding, we have temporarily suspended enforcement actions against more than 9,000 illegal foreign workers. Some detainees cannot be deported because their passports are missing,” Cruz explained.

House Committee Chairman Rep. Robert Ace Barbers called on the con-

cerned agencies to act decisively.

“According to Usec. Cruz, these foreigners are now just loitering. You, the concerned agencies, should be proactive. Don’t sleep on the job. This is a matter of national security—these individuals could be criminals or spies. For all you know, one of them could be living next door,” Barbers said.

Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Central Luzon Director Paolo Magtoto reported that the employment permits of around 15,000 workers from 16 POGO firms had already been revoked, following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive last year to ban POGOs.

The Bureau of Immigration (BI), represented by Vicente Uncad, confirmed that the Chinese workers’ employment visas were downgraded to tourist visas after DOLE’s cancellation of their permits.

DOJ: Fight crime within bounds of country’s laws

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) on Monday called on Philippine National Police (PNP) chief General Nicolas Torre III to ensure that the campaign against criminality is conducted within the bounds of the law.

DOJ Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano expressed the agency’s support for Torre’s mission to apprehend criminals, particularly those involved in the illegal drug trade, but cautioned against shortcuts in law enforcement.

“We are definitely supportive of General Torre’s mission and vision to apprehend criminals because we should always be engaged in a war against crime—but it must be done the right way, with proper systems in place,” Clavano said.

The DOJ official warned against the use of arrest quotas, calling the system outdated and harmful.

“We’ve long been saying that the old system where police are given quotas is unacceptable. Secretary [of Justice] Jesus Crispin Remulla is not afraid to call it out because he knows it still happens. But people are not just numbers,” Clavano explained.

He also expressed concern that a quota-based system might lead to a surge in complaints against police personnel.

“To avoid a flood of cases being filed against police officers, we just want to caution authorities against making such statements or implementing such systems without ensuring due process,” he added.

months, which, by now, should have expired for many of the former workers. Although foreigners may apply monthly for visa extensions for up to two years, the BI lacks a centralized database to monitor their activities. This absence of a unified tracking system hampers government agencies from verifying whether these foreign nationals have extended their stay or engaged in unauthorized activities.

Rep. Barbers lamented the lack of action on the committee’s earlier request to build a centralized monitoring system.

Meanwhile, Quad Committee Vice Chairman Rep. Romeo Acop criticized the multiple agencies authorized to issue visas, complicating regulation and oversight.

“Several agencies are allowed by law to issue visas, including the Department of Foreign Affairs, special economic zones, the Philippine Retirement Authority, and even the Department of Trade and Industry,” Acop noted.

Basilan province has been officially declared free from the presence and threat of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), according to Presidential Adviser on Peace, Reconciliation, and Unity Secretary Carlito Galvez Jr. and Special Assistant to the President Antonio Lagdameo Jr.

“It’s a great honor to be with all of you today as we declare the province of Basilan free from Abu Sayyaf,” Galvez said during a ceremonial event held in Lamitan City on Monday. Lagdameo emphasized that the declaration was the result of sustained collaboration between local and national government agencies in their shared pursuit of peace and security.

“As envisioned by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.—not only for the Bangsamoro region but for the entire country—collaborative peace shall be the foundation of progress and development, as we are witnessing today,” Lagdameo said. “As we raise the flag of peace over Basilan, may it serve as a beacon for other regions still battling the shadows of violence.”

A symbolic demilitarization was held as part of the ceremony, featuring the public destruction of over 300 surrendered high-powered firearms, which were flattened by a steamroller. A peace marker was also unveiled to commemorate the milestone.

“May every leader who comes after us continue to guard this peace, and may our children never have to live the story we are finally closing,” said Basilan Governor Jim Hataman Salliman. Among those in attendance were Basilan Ulama Supreme Council President Aboulkhair Tarason, Lamitan City Mayor Roderick Furigay, Joint Task Force Orion Commander Lt. Gen. Leonardo Peña, Basilan PNP Provincial Director Col. Cerrazid Umabong, and Basilan Vice Governor Yusop Alano. The formal declaration follows an earlier military announcement in December 2024, when the Armed Forces of the Philippines declared Basilan ASG-free after the surrender of the group’s last known members on December 26.

PBBM assures public gov’t won’t run out of ‘Benteng

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Sunday dispelled any doubts about the sustainability of his Benteng Bigas Meron Na program that offers quality rice at ₱20 per kilo to the country’s vulnerable sectors.

“Many are still unsure about how this 20-peso rice will be sustained or extended. ‘Do we have a stock of rice? Can the government pay for it?’” the President said in a video posted on his YouTube channel.

“We can sustain it if everyone works together. We will ensure that our people will not run out of affordable rice,” he stressed in BBMVLOG #270: Mga

Pagbabago, which ran for six minutes and 37 seconds.

The government has rolled out the Benteng Bigas Meron Na program nationwide, selling rice at ₱20 per kilo in Kadiwa ng Pangulo outlets to members of vulnerable sectors, including 4Ps beneficiaries, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and solo parents.

The program fulfills President Marcos’ long-standing promise to make the staple food more affordable and ease the financial burden of the poor, while also supporting farmers in sustaining their rice production.

In the vlog, the President shared testimonials from beneficiaries who said the low-cost rice allowed them to better

feed their families.

“This is a big deal, especially for our poor countrymen. ₱20 is a big deal. We are very happy,” one woman said. Another added: “I am very happy because many people have been waiting for it. It is a big deal.”

Also in the same vlog, President Marcos ordered the National Irrigation Administration (NIA) to ensure that all major canals and irrigation infrastructure across the country are well-maintained to support farmers and boost agricultural production.

“That’s part of the National Irrigation Authority’s mandate—to make sure the major canals and irrigation infrastructure are always in good order,”

he said. The directive comes after the President oversaw the third tranche of NIA’s re-fleeting program last week, which saw the distribution of 229 units of new agricultural machinery to field offices nationwide.

“These machines will ensure that our irrigation is always well-maintained. The flow of water is good,” Marcos noted. Under the President’s directive, the re-fleeting program aims to modernize NIA’s

OPINION

After the impeachment trial the nation must move on

WITH the reading of the Articles of Impeachment set for June 11, the Senate must now proceed with the trial of Vice President Sara Duterte to decide whether to impeach her or not.

At this point, it is ridiculous for anybody to come out with statements like “The impeachment should be de facto dismissed,” as proposed by Senator Ronald “Bato” dela Rosa.

How can you de facto dismiss a case which has not been tried? Santa Banana!

As I often said in the past, the trial of the impeachment case against the Vice President now depends on two factors, one is legal and the other political.

At this point, any proposal from senators in connection with the impeachment case is premature, my gulay.

After the reading of the Articles of Impeachment by the Senate, the trial must now begin. As far as I know, according to the rules of the Senate, the prosecution must present its case against Sara Duterte.

Foremost in this case of Duterte’s impeachment is whether or not she must be made accountable for what she did with her Confidential and Intelligence Funds as Vice President and former Education Secretary.

That is why I am just wondering how she can effectively explain why the recipients of the Confidential Funds of the Vice President are, according to the records of the Philippine Statistics Authority, unknown and fictitious.

If she cannot explain, that will be an indictment against her as the second highest official of the land.

She should set an example of accountability, Santa Banana!

This point of accountability is imperative.

If she cannot explain before the Senate judges why most of the recipients of her Confidential Funds are unknown and fictitious per records of the PSA, that would be an indictment against her which means she must be made accountable, pointing to graft and corruption.

And if she is proven to have committed graft and corruption by the Senate trial that would be a betrayal of public trust and a culpable violation of the Con-

stitution. I often say, however, the legal aspect of the trial of the Senate is only one factor.

The other factor is political, where the Senate judges have to decide whether or not Duterte is guilty.

Whether or not she will be impeached,

I cannot speculate on the outcome of the Senate trial. All I know, having listened to the impeachment trial of former President Erap and Chief Justice Renato Corona, is the case is both legal and political.

What is important is that after the Senate trial on the impeachment of Duterte, the country must move on because of formidable problems facing us, both economic and foreign affairs.

It is ridiculous at this time for anybody to come out with statements like ‘The impeachment should be de facto dismissed’

With China trying to upend the balance of power in Asia by “ credibly preparing its military,” this to me is the biggest threat that President Marcos Jr. must face.

It could mean more threats in connection with disputed territories between China and the Philippines in the WPS.

I cannot predict what will happen either to Taiwan, because China believes Taiwan is a province of China and, God forbid, if Taiwan is invaded by China, the Philippines cannot help but be involved.

And with the involvement of the Philippines, the USA will necessarily come into the picture.

These are the formidable problems the country must face, notwithstanding the impeachment trial of Duterte.

I pray to God that China will not involve the Philippines in any matter because after having gone through World War II myself, I hate to imagine what will happen to the Philippines.

Guardians or gravediggers of democracy?

IN A quiet Manila street, Fr. Flavie Villanueva kneels with a rosary, leading a crowd of students and activists in prayer. Their chants echo: “Truth! Justice! Now!”

The priest, a tireless advocate for the marginalized, has become the moral compass of a growing movement, his voice trembling not with fear but with resolve as he demands the Senate confront Vice President Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial.

On June 8, 2025, as the clock ticks toward a historic reckoning, the Philippines teeters on a razor’s edge—democracy itself hangs in the balance.

This is no ordinary trial.

The impeachment of Sara Duterte, the first vice president in Philippine history to face such a fate, is a litmus test for a nation grappling with its democratic soul.

The House of Representatives, with 215 votes on Feb. 5, 2025, charged her with graft, misuse of ₱612.5 million in confidential funds, bribery, betrayal of public trust, and chilling allegations of conspiracy to commit murder—threats against President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. The Constitution waits.

But the Senate, tasked with upholding this sacred duty, wavers.

An unprecedented coalition of voices has risen to demand action. Deans from Ateneo’s law schools— Manila, Davao, Zamboanga, Naga, and Cagayan—joined by the Lasallian Family, Adamson University, and the University of Santo Tomas, issued a clarion call on June 8, 2025.

“We pray that the Philippine Senate will… respond to its moral and Constitutional duty,” Ateneo’s deans declared, their joint statement a plea for truth and

justice.

The Lasallian Family condemned “any and all efforts—covert or overt—to prematurely discard” the process, while Adamson insisted, “The Constitution demands action forthwith, and so do we.”

UST’s succinct cry—“Respect the Constitution. Fulfill the Duty. Forthwith proceed. Veritas (Truth)”—cuts through the noise.

This unity among academic titans frames the trial as a battle for the rule of law, a firewall against institutional decay.

The impeachment of Sara Duterte...is a litmus test for a nation grappling with its democratic soul

Yet legal ambiguity clouds the path.

The 1987 Constitution mandates the Senate to “forthwith proceed” once impeachment articles arrive, a duty scholars like former Justice Azcuna, a drafter of the charter, say transcends congressional terms—the Senate, as a “continuing body,” must finish what it starts.

But senators like Bato dela Rosa push back, claiming a “de facto dismissal” after 100 days of delay, a stance critics decry as a dodge.

Others, like Tolentino, eye a rushed 19-day trial before the 19th Congress adjourns on June 14, 2025.

The clock ticks. Can justice breathe in such a sprint?

Intolerant of broken promises

THE five-day Ocean Summit has shifted to first gear in Nice, France, with some 50 heads of state and government gathering there to confront the United Nations-described “global emergency” in the oceans.

This is the third UN Conference (UNOC3), ending on Friday, to find a way forward to better protect what experts call the the liquid heart of the “blue planet” – a byname from the planet’s remarkable feature of vast amount of water covering approximately 71 percent of its surface and containing more than 97 percent of the planet’s total amount of water.

The Earth’s atmosphere scatters shorter blue wave lengths of light, while bodies of water reflect sunlight, resulting in the dominant blue color.

Mankind gets from the ocean 5080 percent of the oxygen it breathes, thanks to the process of photosynthesis that tiny marine algae known as phytoplankton produce.

Oceans regulate the global climate by moving warm and cold masses of sea waters around the planet, the warm currents moving to the poles along the surface, and as they reach the poles they cool down, and sink, circling back from the depths towards the equa-

Sara Duterte’s alleged threats against Marcos, his wife, and House Speaker Martin Romualdez—vowing in Nov. 2024 to order their deaths if she met harm—ignited a firestorm.

Her resignation as Education Secretary and the unraveling of her 2022 alliance with Marcos fuel suspicion.

Is this accountability or a vendetta?

With the 2028 election looming, political jockeying casts a long shadow.

Some see the Marcos camp flexing muscle to cripple the Duterte dynasty; others see a desperate bid to uphold the principle that no one is above the law.

The Lasallian Family’s warning rings true: senators must not be “mere spectators to political expedience” but “guardians of the Republic’s integrity.”

Leaders are under pressure to commit much-needed money and stronger protections for the off color seas and the people that depend on them

Last Sunday, the world leaders descended on Nice on the eve of the highlevel summit to tackle the intensifying crisis in the oceans driven by climate change, pollution and overfishing.

comforted families of drug war victims, now leads protests, his faith unshaken despite the risks.

Across town, Maria, a 21-year-old law student at Ateneo, confides her fears to me: “I studied the Constitution believing it protects us. But if the Senate delays, if they bend to pressure, what’s left to believe in?”

Her eyes, wide with hope and dread, mirror a generation’s waning trust.

The allegations—misused funds, unexplained wealth, complicity in extrajudicial killings—strike at the heart of public faith.

Adamson’s plea burns: “This is not the time for neutrality or passive observation; this is the time for principled leadership.”

The Senate’s path is fraught. A rushed 19-day trial, as Tolentino proposes, risks a spectacle, not justice. Dismissal without evidence, as the UP

With the “emergency” on their table, leaders gathering in Nice are under pressure to commit much-needed money and stronger protections for the off color seas and the people that depend on them.

UNOC3 must beat this critical point, as it were, as nations quarrel over deepsea mining, plastic litter and exploitative fishing, against a backdrop of wider geopolitical tensions.

French President Emmanuel Macron, in Monaco on Sunday for a pre-conference event on ocean finance, said: “We have a duty to mobilize, because the science is clear and the facts are there.” Among the 50 heads of state and government attending are Brazilian President are Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who succinctly said “The planet can no longer tolerate broken promises; either we act, or the planet is in danger.”

The Philippines, for its part, has a National Plan of Action for the Prevention, Reduction and Management of Marine Litter, which has been developed to provide a blueprint to enhance its current efforts in resource and waste management and bring additional lens to marine litter issues and the control of additional leakage of waste into bodies of water.

Our eyes and ears are keenly tuned in to the Nice Summit.

law faculty warns, abandons the chamber’s “proud tradition.”

Delay erodes what Adamson calls “the foundations of our democratic institutions.”

The universities’ appeals—rooted in moral duty, pedagogical mission, and democratic zeal—echo a nation’s cry: no one is above the law.

The trial, set for June 11, 2025, teeters on a precipice.

The Senate now faces a choice. Will it heed the Constitution, the deans, the priest, the students, and uphold its sacred role?

Or will it succumb to expediency, burying its own legitimacy?

The clock ticks.

The Constitution waits. Fr. Villanueva prays. Maria watches.

Democracy holds its breath—will the Senate be its guardian or its gravedigger?

Scuffles in LA as soldiers sent by Trump spread

LOS ANGELES—Demonstrators torched cars and scuffled with security forces in Los Angeles on Sunday as police kept protestors away from the National Guard troops President Donald Trump sent to the streets of the second biggest US city.

Unrest broke out for a third day, with protestors angry at action by immigration officials that have resulted in dozens of arrests of what authorities say are illegal migrants and gang members.

The raids—which began in broad daylight in a city with a large Latino population—were always likely to spark reaction among the public in the liberal city.

Trump’s deployment of the force —the first over the head of a state governor since 1965—was criticized by Democrats, including former vice president Kamala Harris who called it “a dangerous escalation meant to provoke chaos.”

But Republicans lined up behind Trump to dismiss the pushback.

“I have no concern about that at all,” said House Speaker Mike Johnson, accusing Newsom of “an inability or unwillingness to do what is necessary.”

But opponents say Trump, who has made clamping down on illegal migration a key plank of his second term, was deliberately stoking tensions with his deployment of California’s National Guard, a stand-by military usually controlled by the state’s governor, Gavin Newsom.

“We didn’t have a problem until Trump got involved,” Newsom wrote on X.

6.3 magnitude quake shakes central Colombia

PARATEBUENO, Colombia—

Buildings swayed, sirens blared and panicked Colombians raced onto the streets Sunday after a shallow 6.3 magnitude earthquake rattled the center of the country.

The quake struck at 8:08 am about 170 kilometers (105 miles) east of the capital Bogota and was felt across much of the country.

In the town of Paratebueno, not far from the epicenter, AFP reporters saw several partially collapsed buildings, including a whitewashed church with one wall seriously damaged.

Nearby residents picked through the debris of several collapsed zincroofed structures.

There were no reports of serious injuries, but authorities were investigating minor damage in several other villages.

In Bogota—a city nestled in the high Andes and home to eight million people—the lengthy jolt prompted sirens to go off and sparked widespread alarm.

Tall buildings visibly moved from side to side, creaking and groaning for almost a minute, while furniture and fittings shook violently.

Thousands of Bogotanos raced downstairs and out of buildings still wearing their pajamas and sought refuge in parks and other open spaces. AFP

“This is a serious breach of state sovereignty — inflaming tensions while pulling resources from where they’re actually needed. Rescind the order. Return control to California,” he added.

At least three self-driving Waymo cars were burning on Sunday afternoon, with two others vandalised as protestors roamed around a limited area in downtown Los Angeles. Traffic was halted on a key freeway for over an hour while scores of people thronged the roadway. They were moved off by California Highway Patrol officers, who used flash-bangs and smoke grenades.

But after a limited early confrontation between federal agents from the Department of Homeland Security and a few dozen protestors at a detention center, the clashes all involved local law enforcement.

By early afternoon LAPD officers established containment lines some distance from federal buildings, preventing contact between angry demonstrators and the scores of armed National Guardsmen from the 79th Infantry Brigade Combat Team, who had gathered in helmets and camouflage gear.AFP

Summit tackles ‘emergency’ for 5 days in world’s oceans

NICE, France—A global summit on the dire state of the oceans kicked off Monday in France, with calls to ban bottom trawling and bolster protections for the world’s overexploited marine areas.

World leaders attending the UN Ocean Conference in Nice have been told to come up with concrete ideas— and money—to tackle what organizers call a global “emergency” facing the neglected seas. The appeal for unity comes as nations tussle over a global plastics pollution treaty, and the United States sidesteps international efforts to regulate deep-sea mining.

On the eve of the summit, Brazil’s President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva said that leaders must act now: “The planet can no longer tolerate broken promises.”

A wave of new commitments is expected Monday in Nice, where around 60 heads of state and government will join thousands of business leaders, scientists and civil society activists.

“Never in the history of humanity have we brought together so many people for the oceans,” French President Emmanuel Macron said Sunday before hosting leaders for an official dinner.

On Monday, the United Kingdom is expected to announce a partial ban on bottom trawling in half its marine protected areas, putting the destructive fishing method squarely on the summit agenda.

Bottom trawling sees huge fishing nets dragged across the ocean floor, a process shockingly captured in a recent documentary by British naturalist David Attenborough. AFP

Bolsonaro to appear in Brazil court over attempted coup

BRASILIA—Brazil’s right wing former president Jair Bolsonaro will appear at the Supreme Court Monday (Tuesday Manila time), facing charges of trying to stage a coup to retain power after losing the 2022 elections.

In February, prosecutors accused the 70-year-old far-right leader, who governed Brazil from 2019 to 2022, of leading a “criminal organization” plotting to overturn the election results and preventing the inauguration of leftist President Luiz Inacio Lula

da Silva.

The plot failed, the charge sheet says, because of a lack of military backing.

Bolsonaro also stands accused of having been aware of an alleged plot to assassinate Lula, his vice president Geraldo Alckmin, and judge Alexandre de Moraes—an arch-foe.

Bolsonaro, who is hoping to make a comeback in 2026 presidential elections despite being barred from running, denies the charges.

He, along with seven other former aides, are facing sentences of up to 40 years behind bars if convicted.

Although he has the right to remain silent, Bolsonaro told reporters last

week that he plans to respond “without any problem” to questions from the court.

“It’s an excellent idea to speak openly about the coup. I will be very happy to have the opportunity to clarify what happened,” the former army captain said on Thursday.

“It’s the moment of truth.”

The Supreme Court headquarters in Brasilia, where Bolsonaro will take the stand, is one of the buildings raided by his supporters, known as the Bolsonaristas, in January 2023 as they urged the military to overthrow Lula.

Testimonies will be broadcast live and could last all week. AFP

The Israeli government had vowed to prevent the “unauthorized” ship from breaching the naval blockade of Gaza, urging it to turn back.

On Sunday, Defence Minister Israel Katz said the blockade, in place since years before the Israel-Hamas war, was needed to prevent Palestinian militants from importing weapons. After diverting the boat, Israel’s foreign ministry posted a picture of the activists all in orange life jackets being offered water and sandwiches.

“All the passengers of the ‘selfie yacht’ are safe and unharmed,” the ministry wrote on social media, adding that it expected the activists to return to their home countries. AFP

Poland scrambles jets after major Russian strikes on Ukraine

WARSAW—Poland scrambled fighter jets on Monday morning to secure its airspace after neighboring western Ukraine was hit by major Russian strikes.

“Due to the intensive air attack by the Russian Federation on the territory of Ukraine, Polish and allied aircraft began to operate in Polish airspace in the morning,” Warsaw’s Operational Command said in a statement on social media.

Russia struck deep beyond the frontlines overnight, hitting western Ukraine with dozens of drones and missiles, according to Rivne Mayor Oleksandr Tretyak, who called it “the largest attack” on the region.

Russia has recently accelerated its

campaign against Ukraine, dampening hopes of a ceasefire after a renewed diplomatic push to end the biggest conflict in Europe since World War II.

Poland is one of Ukraine’s closest allies and serves as a crucial logistics hub for Western military aid to Kyiv.

In March 2024, NATO member Poland reported a breach of its airspace by a Russian cruise missile, demanding an explanation from Moscow.

A similar incident occurred in Dec, 2023, when a Russian missile penetrated Polish airspace for several minutes before returning to Ukraine.

Russia has said it is advancing into the surrounding eastern region of Dnipropetrovsk for the first time in its three-year invasion.

Mezhova, a town just 13 kilometers from the flashpoint Donetsk region, now risks becoming a target for a Russian ground offensive. Few locals dare venture into the nearest village to the east, where drones reportedly strike nearly every vehicle.

He met with Philippine Navy commander Vice Admiral Jose Ma. Ambrosio Ezpeleta to discuss potential collaborations between the two countries.

A SENIOR legislator on Monday urged the Department of Transportation (DOTr) to allow more car assemblers or manufacturers to participate in the Public Transport Modernization Program (PTMP) in a bid to bring down the cost of new units. Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte said by making new units cheaper, operators and drivers will be encouraged to replace their dilapidated buses and jeepneys with environmentfriendly Euro-4 compliant units or even electric or e-vehicles (EVs).

Villafuerte also said at a recent committee hearing of the Commission on Appointments (CA) that with the limited number of suppliers or assemblers participating in the PTMP, one problem facing institutions, such as local government units (LGUs), that are interested in participating in the program on a largescale basis, is where to source e-vehicles that are cheaper or more price competitive. Another problem, he said, is that financing options for public utility vehicle (PUV) operators and drivers under the PTMP are limited to the Land Bank of the Philippines and the Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP). SENATOR Risa Hontiveros on Monday called on both chambers of Congress to reconcile opposing bills on the proposed minimum wage hike before the 19th Congress adjourns.

“Only two session days remain in the 19th Congress, and the bill

that would grant a wage increase to minimum wage workers in the private sector must be taken up. Let’s not forget them,” Hontiveros said.

“We are down to the wire,” she added.

The House of Representatives last week approved House Bill No. 11376, which seeks to raise the daily minimum wage by ₱200 for private sector workers.

The Senate had earlier passed its own version of the measure, proposing a ₱100 increase.

Hontiveros co-sponsored the Senate bill, ensuring that the increase would also benefit contractual, sub-contractual and agency-

hired workers.

“The House and the Senate both agree that it’s time to grant a wage increase. A bicameral conference committee must be convened to reconcile the differing versions, so the final bill can be sent to Malacañang and signed into law without delay,” the senator said. Hontiveros also said that the issue must not be overshadowed by ongoing political developments, including discussions of impeachment.

“Let us listen to the voices of workers who continue to struggle with the rising costs of goods, transportation, and services,” she concluded.

Heavy rains flood Zambo City, over 4,000 evacuated

MORE than 4,000 people or 1000 families were displaced due to heavy rains that flooded in Zamboanga City in Zamboanga del Sur, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC).

In its latest report, the NDRRMC said at least 772 families, equivalent to 3028 persons, were evacuated to eight temporary shelters in the city.

Power supply in the area was tentatively cut off for security reasons.

Meanwhile, the City Social Welfare and Development Office extended relief assistance to the affected families.

The Zamboanga City disaster office was placed on blue alert status since Friday amid the precipitations.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation in the 98 barangays of the city, with response teams on standby for immediate deployment if exigency arose.

PDEA, PNP seize over P800m shabu smuggled from US

A JOINT team of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) has seized over P800 million worth of shabu concealed in snack boxes that arrived from the United States.

The interdiction was conducted Sunday (June 8) by the PDEA-National Capital Region in collaboration with the PNP.

The team confiscated some 120 kilos of shabu valued at P816 million hidden in snack boxes at a logistics warehouse in Pasig City.

The PDEA noted that drug traffickers are employing anew deceptive strategies to smuggle illegal drugs.

The shipment was consigned to multiple addresses in Taguig. City, Pasig City, and Makati City However, no suspect has been apprehended.

“This interdiction success is a product of strong collaboration between PDEA and our law enforcement partners. Our presence in major airports, seaports, and cargo facilities is not just necessary. It is imperative,” PDEA director general Isagani Nerez said.

ENVIRONMENTAL advocates have underscored the need for stricter governance to protect and preserve the country’s rich marine resources.

The group, consisting of government officials, environment experts and stakeholders, was joined by French ambassador to Manila Marie Fontanel who said the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference (UNOC) aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the maritime domain by protecting the marine environment, developing the blue economy, and strengthening maritime defense and security.

Fontanel made the remarks during the fourth installment of the “Blue Nations” initiative, organized by the Stratbase Institute and the French Embassy in the Philippines as part of the UNOC.

She said enforcing the Biodiversity Beyond National Jurisdiction Treaty is one of UNOC’s central goals, sharing hopes that

the Philippines be part of the first 60 ratifications necessary for its commencement.

“The Philippines is a global hotspot for marine biodiversity. It is also an ecological treasure facing increasing threats such as overfishing, plastic pollution, habitat degradation, and sea level rise. So, it is important to foster collaboration and share common solutions,” Fontanel said.

Stratbase Institute president Prof. Victor Andres Manhit emphasized strategic collaboration with the state, private sector, and international community to ensure continued efforts in developing a blue economy supported by rules-based order.

“Securing our seas demands a wholeof-society approach. As like-minded partners, let us leverage our science-based policies and marine industries to drive our conservation efforts towards sustainable ocean governance,” Manhit said.

Haliburton vows to improve after OKC defense sti es Indiana

LOS ANGELES—Tyrese Haliburton vowed to improve his first-half scoring struggles on Sunday after the Indiana Pacers stumbled to a series-leveling defeat to the Oklahoma City Thunder in the NBA Finals.

Haliburton has repeatedly rescued the Pacers throughout this year’s playoff campaign with a series of late clutch baskets, including a last-second winner in game one of the Finals on Thursday. But in the first halves of both games one and two, Haliburton has struggled to make an impact.

After scoring just six points in the first half of game one, Haliburton bagged a paltry three points in the first two quarters of Sunday’s 123-107 loss in Oklahoma City.

“I think I’ve had two really poor first halves,” Haliburton admitted. “I just have to figure out how to be better earlier in games.”

Haliburton eventually finished with 17 points on Sunday, but coughed up five turnovers in the face of a suffocating Thunder defensive effort.

“Kudos to them,” Haliburton said. “They are a great defensive team but (I’ll) watch the film and see where I can get better.”

Despite the loss, Haliburton said the Pacers would take heart from managing to split the opening two games on the road as the series heads back to Indianapolis for game three on Wednesday.

“It’s still a race, first to four,” Haliburton said. “We are going to our home court tied 1-1, and we love playing at home. So just see where we can get better, and yeah, take it a day at a time.”

Pacers head coach Rick Carlisle meanwhile brushed off an invitation to dwell on Haliburton’s struggles in the early part of games, stressing that the Pacers had collective responsibility for scoring.

“There’s a lot more to the game than just scoring,” Carlisle said. “So everybody’s got to do more. It starts with the best players. AFP

Philippines claims women’s Asia Cup ice hockey crown

THE Philippines has once again ascended to the top of Asian women’s ice hockey, capturing the IIHF Asia Cup 2025 with a hard-fought 4-2 victory over a tenacious Iranian team in the gold-medal match recently in United Arab Emirates.

The team’s success was boosted by exceptional individual performances, including Player of the Game Kathleen Tan (#33), whose stellar play consistently elevated the team.

Jasmin Alcido (#87), recognized as the Best Player for the Philippines, showcased her brilliance throughout the tournament, but every single player, however, poured their heart and soul into this historic win. The Filipinas’ path to the gold was marked by dominance.

They secured their spot in the finals with a commanding 4-1 victory over India at the Al Hili Ice Rink in Al-Ain, UAE.

The win marked the Filipinas’ fourth straight in the tournament, with earlier victories including decisive performances against Kyrgyzstan, host country UAE, and Malaysia.

Forward Illeana Venice Jimenez was a standout in the semifinal match against India, earning Player of the Game honors. Jimenez’s crucial goal, along with her 46.67% face-off win rate and two shots, helped seal the Philippine squad’s dominance and secure their place in the championship against the Iranians.

World Cup-bound Gilas 3x3 women jump to 14th in world rankings

THE Gilas Pilipinas Women are headed to the 2025 FIBA 3x3 U23 World Cup later this year following a masterful performance at the FIBA 3x3 Youth Nations League Asia-Pacific 1 in Doha, Qatar.

Perpetual Help Junior Altas capture NCAA volleyball title

THE Perpetual Help Junior Altas captured the NCAA Season 100 Juniors’ Division Title after defeating the Letran Squires in a thrilling five-set match, 2521, 23-25, 21-25, 25-17, 15-9, in Game 3 of the Finals at the FilOil EcoOil Centre in San Juan City on Sunday. Coach Sandy Rieta’s team was led by middle blocker John Lat, who had a game-high 22 points (15 in attacks, 6 in blocks, and 1 ace).

Four of his teammates also registered double-digit scores, namely Zyro Ornos with 19 points, Nathan Ciriaco and Gabriel Macatuno with 16 points each, and

Resty Santos with 12 points.

Junior Altas setter Charles Concino recorded 18 digs and 19 excellent sets.

“I am happy with the result of the kids’ hard work. We reached Game 3 and even became champions,” Rieta said.

“Even in the dugout, I told them to enjoy the game,” Rieta added. The Squires were led by King Nimo with 22, Vergel Balajadia with 18, and Jasper Afgao with 16. It was Perpetual Help’s 13th title since joining the tournament in 1984, with seven of them under Rieta’s belt. The Junior Altas took the lead after winning the first set, but they fell just short in sets 2 and 3. However, Perpetu-

Jem Meniano, Elaine Etang, and Kacey Dela Rosa won Stops 1, 2, 4, and 5 to book their ticket to China.

“We’re really proud of their accomplishments in Doha,” said Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas Executive Director Erika Dy. “Our women’s teams have always been capable of competing against the best in the region and now the best in the world. They just needed the support to give them the opportunities to prove their skill.”

As a consequence to the meteoric rise of the Gilas Women, the Philippines stormed to 14th spot –up eight rungs – in the FIBA 3×3 world rankings, this will be the highest rank that a Gilas team has reached in FIBA 3x3.

“Thanks to the support of the SBP, the schools, coaches and their officials. It was a big help in making sure we can prepare. Also, the challenge for me was to prepare them early as I also had to leave a week before the tournament to go with our main team to Europe for another tournament, but with the help of my coaching staff led by Coach Paolo

Layug and Nico Francisco, the preparations were done well,” said head coach Anton Altamirano.

“It’s always an amazing feeling when you accomplish something that nobody expected. We came in the tournament with a goal to win some stops as we failed to do it last year. But when we won our first game against New Zealand, we felt we could do it. Gov’t unveils target to create 8m new jobs in digital sector by 2028

THE government aims to create an additional 8 million jobs in the digital sector by 2028, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) said Monday.

The DICT said the goal is to make digital economy opportunities accessible to all Filipinos, in response to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to foster a “Digital-First Economy.”

“The DICT will explore every corner of the Philippines and make them feel that there is a government ready to help them,”

DICT Undersecretary Christina Faye Condez-de Sagon said in a statement.

The DICT projects 19.3 million Filipinos will be employed in the digital economy by 2028, a substantial increase from 11.3 million this year.

Data from the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) showed

the digital economy contributed P2.05 trillion to the gross domestic product (GDP) in 2023, an 8.4-percent share. This was a 7.7-percent increase from P1.90 trillion in 2022.

The digital economy encompasses digital-enabling infrastructure, e-commerce, digital media/content, and government digital services. Government digital services is a newly added component.

Digital-enabling infrastructure comprised the largest portion of the digital economy in 2023, amounting to P1.70 trillion. Within this component, telecommunication services held

BRITISH Columbia Investment Management Corp. (BCI), a Canadian investment company, said it will acquire a minority stake in Pinnacle Towers, a digital infrastructure platform focused on the Philippines, the companies said Monday. The transaction is expected to close by the third quarter of 2025, pending regulatory approvals.

Global investment firm KKR will remain the majority shareholder in Pinnacle Towers, which was established in 2020 to build and manage telecommunications towers in the Philippines. It operates about 7,000 towers, making it the largest independent tower company in the country.

the biggest share at 32.9 percent, followed by professional and business services at 30.1 percent, and computer, electronic and optical products at 17.1 percent.

E-commerce had a 14 percent share of the digital economy, digital media/content 2.9 percent and government digital services 0.2 percent.

About 9.68 million people were employed in the digital economy in 2023. E-commerce accounted for the highest share of employment at 87.3 percent, followed by digitalenabling infrastructure (11.5 percent), digital media/content (1.1 percent), and government digital services (0.1 percent).

Projesh Banerjea, managing director for Infrastructure at KKR, said BCI shares their “long-term vision and commitment to developing critical digital infrastructure.”

Patrick Tangney, chairman and chief executive of Pinnacle Towers, said the investment from BCI “marks an important milestone in our journey and is a strong endorsement of our mission.”

BCI’s infrastructure and renewable resources portfolio includes nine active investments in the Asia-Pacific region, such as Rakuten Mobile in Japan and Altius in India.

KKR’s investment in Pinnacle Towers comes from its Asia Infrastructure Funds I and II.

KKR’s Asia Pacific infrastructure platform, established in 2019, has about $13 billion in assets under management.

“The Philippines represents a compelling market for long-term capital, especially in essential digital infrastructure services,” said Lincoln Webb, executive vice president and global head for infrastructure and renewable resources at BCI.

Haus Talk buys National Steel lot in Rizal

DEVELOPER Haus Talk Inc. (HTI) said Monday it completed its acquisition of the former National Steel Corp.’s property in Antipolo, Rizal.

The transaction will substantially expand HTI’s land portfolio and reinforce its vision to become a recognized property developer delivering “value for money” residential real estate projects in prime locations, HTI said in a statement.

The 13.6-hectare property will be HTI’s next flagship development in the Rizal area. Expected to commence by the fourth quarter of 2025, the expansive project is projected to yield about 1,500 units and generate revenues of about P4.9 billion. The design for the upcoming development will be benchmarked against The Granary in Biñan, Laguna, a community of quality homes, amenities and landscaped surroundings. The new property will also include commercial spaces alongside the residential community.

“This acquisition underscores Haus Talk Inc.’s aggressive strategy to bolster our

land bank and solidify our position as a dominant force in the affordable housing sector,” said HTI president and chief executive Ma. Rachel Madlambayan.

“Antipolo remains a highly soughtafter location due to its terrain, climate, and provincial feel, all while offering excellent accessibility to Metro Manila. We are confident that this new project will not only address the pressing demand for quality affordable housing but also contribute significantly to our long-term growth and profitability,” she said.

The strategic expansion into Antipolo leverages Haus Talk’s established reputation for delivering quality homes at accessible prices in the area. This also represents a crucial step in HTI’s commitment to delivering superior housing solutions and continues its trajectory of addressing the nation’s housing gap.

With a focus on delivering value for money and enhancing communities, HTI continues to expand its footprint and contribute to addressing the housing needs of Filipinos, it said.

Meanwhile, the peso closed at 55.81 against the U.S. dollar Monday, from 55.60 on Thursday.

Luis Limlingan, head of sales at Regina Capital Development Corp., said investors are gearing up for the upcoming release of the latest U.S. inflation data, which will provide clues about the U.S. Federal Reserve’s next policy move. The Fed is slated to meet next week.

Asian stocks also advanced Monday

ahead of a new round of trade talks between the U.S. and China.

Locally, Limlingan said investors are also awaiting the release of the latest data on foreign direct investments.

ONE of the lessons that are drummed into the minds of students in the Statutory Construction segment of the law course is that there is no need for interpretation or debate when provisions of the Constitution or ordinary laws are unambiguous and crystal-clear. A case in point is Section 4 of Article XI – the article on “Accountability of Public Officers” - of the Constitution.

Section 4 of Article XI provides that “the verified complaint or resolution of impeachment filed by at least one third of all members of the House shall constitute the Articles of Impeachment and trial by the Senate shall proceed forthwith.” The Articles of Impeachment, embodying seven charges against Vice-President Sara Duterte, were transmitted to the Senate by the House on February 5, 2025.

Any person with valid objections on the abovementioned project may file his/her objection in writing, under oath, with the BOI within three (3) days from the date of this publication .

Any person with valid objections on the abovementioned project may file his/her objection in writing, under oath, with the BOI within three (3) days from the date of this publication .

The language of the afore quoted Constitutional provision could not be clearer. Thus, in accordance with the principal rule of Statutory construction, it is not subject to interpretation or debate.

Yet, what are the Filipino people seeing and hearing?

They are seeing and hearing the partisans and supporters of Vice-President Duterte conducting themselves as though Section 4 of Article XI was ambiguous and needed interpretation. During the four-month interval following the receipt of the Articles of Impeachment by the Senate they have resorted to delaying tactics – including allowing the Senatorial candidates three months to do their campaigning – and spewing out specious legal arguments in support of the non-holding of an impeachment trial.

At the start of their effort, the pro-Sara Duterte camp had signaled that it intended to prevent the current Senate from being able to complete its impeachment-trial work so that they would be able to invoke the Constitutional prohibition against the twice-in-oneyear impeachment of an erring public officers. Currently they are pursuing the argument that transitioning of an impeachment trial – the incoming 20th Congress Senate proceeding with the work done by the outgoing Senate – is not Constitutionally possible.

The grand vision of the pro-Sara Duterte forces is, and has from the start been, the non-holding of an impeachment trial. If there ever was any doubt about that, such doubt has been totally dispelled by the motions to dismiss the impeachment complaint files last week by pro-Duterte Senators.

The time has come to put a stop to all this no-impeachment-trial nonsense and get back to the basics. The basics are Section 4 of the Article XI of the Constitution and the need to hold the VicePresident accountable for the Constitutional offenses indicated in the Articles of Impeachment.

“Trial by the Senate shall proceed forthwith”—that is what the framers of the 1987 Constitutions required the Senate to do upon receipt of the verified Articles of Impeachment from the House of Representatives. The Constitutional Commissioners could simply have ordered the Senate to proceed with the holding of an impeachment trial; but they went further than that and required that the trial be held “forthwith”. Their inclusion of the word forthwith is a clear indication that they wanted an impeachment trial to be held immediately upon receipt of Articles of Impeachment. No ifs and buts and no attempts to water down the meaning and import of Section 4, Article XI,. And definitely no delays. Should Vice-President Sara be allowed to not account for the P621 million worth of intelligence and confidential funds that the government entrusted to her in her capacities as VicePresident and Secretary of Education? The members of the Constitutional Commission didn’t think she should; that is why they put an article on “Accountability of Public Officers” in the 1987 Constitution. And very recently 90 percent of the individuals polled by a reputable survey institution said that they wanted Sara Duterte to answer the charges against her in an impeachment trial.

Very Truly Yours, Dr. Aejeleth B. Eyas Asst. Corporate Secretary

It’s time to put aside the delays, the prevarications and the specious reasonings. It’s time to go back to the basics. Let Sara Duterte’s impeachment trial proceed forthwith. (llagasjessa@yahoo.com)

PEZA signs MOU to support Chinese investors in PH

THE Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and China’s Aoxing Group signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) Monday to help Chinese companies diversify their production and supply chains amid shifting global trade dynamics.

The MOU, signed by PEZA director-general Tereso Panga and Aoxing Group chairman Zhao Wenfa, aims to facilitate collaboration with Chinese enterprises seeking resilient, dualbase operations in China and Southeast Asia.

“PEZA counts Chinese investors, including those from Taiwan and Hong Kong, among our top prospects for foreign direct investment this year and beyond,” Panga said. PEZA seeks to position the Philippines as a prime “plus one” destination under the growing China+1+1 strategy.

The MOU designates Aoxing Group as PEZA’s newest Investment Promotion Partner (IPP).

Zhao, who is also president of the International Chamber of Commerce and chief executive of Dongguan Aoxing Audio Visual Equipment Co. Ltd., is expected to leverage his business network and global experience to promote investments in Philippine economic zones.

Zhao said localized operations and long-term partnerships would be essential in building sustainable economic collaboration between China and the Philippines.

The Philippines, which experiences an average of 20 typhoons annually, has sustained substantial agricultural losses from natural disasters. In 2024, the Department of Agriculture (DA) reported P57.8 billion in losses due to floods, droughts, volcanic eruptions, pests, and diseases.

IRRI said that while crop insurance is recognized as a vital tool to mitigate the effects of climate shocks on agriculture, traditional methods have often proven inadequate due to slow claims processing, subjective damage assessments, and limited coverage.

CREC eyes $1-b budget to build more RE projects

CITICORE Renewable Energy Corp (CREC) said Monday it is looking at a $1-billion capital expenditure budget for 2025 to expand its renewable energy portfolio.

“Total capex for 2025 would roughly be around north of $1 billion. Most of them has already been spent in early parts of the year. This goes to the one gigawatt that will be energized before end of the year,” CREC president and chief executive Oliver Tan said during the company’s annual stockholders’ meeting.

“The balance will be spent for the second batch or the second gigawatt that we will break ground towards the second half of the year,” Tan said. He said the company expects to energize another 1 gigawatt before the end of 2025.

Tan said CREC has a strong competitive edge against other solar players. “CREC takes pride in its vertical integrated business model. We are an RE developer. At the same time, we have an in-house engineering procurement and construction arm,” he said.

Dumaguete coastal road project bucked

DUMAGUETE CITY—Residents of Barangay Bantayan here, joined by various groups, are calling for a stop to a coastal road expansion in this capital city of Negros Oriental, citing possible negative impacts on the marine environment, the fishing community and other stakeholders. Gary Rosales, president and co-founder of the environmental advocacy group Kahugpungan para sa Kinabuhi ug Kinaiyahan, Inc. (Kinaiyahan), told the Philippine News Agency in an interview that a signature campaign is ongoing against the project.

“The coastal road expansion project will be undertaken by the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) and will stretch several kilometers of shoreline from Barangay Banilad to Silliman Beach in Barangay Bantayan here,” Rosales said. One of the major concerns of the groups is the looming destruction of Silliman Beach, touted as the last public beach in this city. The DPWH-Region 7 (Central Visayas) recently conducted a public consultation in Barangay Bantayan but Rosales said they were not provided a copy of the project brief, although it was presented to them.

“During the consultation, residents and barangay officials were unanimous in saying that we (must) reject the project that will destroy Silliman Beach,” Rosales said. PNA

E.A. Borje described the financial assistance as a crucial step toward the implementation of the NAP.

“This step may be perceived negatively because it is a finance facility, but viewed strategically, it is an investment that will strengthen our capacity to prepare for and respond to climate-related disasters. In the long term, it can significantly reduce losses and the need for emergency funding,” Borje said in a statement last week.

“The funding presents a great opportunity to bolster our oceans

and ecosystems, which are among our most important natural defenses against the climate crisis,” he said.

The loan, announced by ADB President Masato Kanda at the 16th Brunei Darussalam-IndonesiaMalaysia-Philippines East Asean Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) Summit, is set for approval this year and marks a pivotal step in scaling up climate adaptation efforts.

The NAP serves as the Philippines’ primary policy tool for building longterm climate resilience, guiding the country’s adaptation strategies that focus on vulnerable communities and ecosystems.

Developed under the leadership of President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., NAP reflects his vision of a climate-resilient and climate-smart Philippines.

The NAP also prioritizes resource allocation, ensures policy coherence, mobilizes financing, and promotes inclusive stakeholder participation.

One of its key priorities is the rehabilitation and restoration of coastal and marine ecosystems, including the safeguarding of vital coastal habitats such as mangroves, coral reefs, seagrass beds, and other ecosystems with strong adaptive potential.

Based on the NAP assessment, ecosystems provide critical protection against climate hazards and contribute billions of pesos annually through ecosystem services. Fisheries, which form part of these ecosystems, are a major source of livelihood and contribute to 75 percent of the food consumed in the country, which is sourced locally.CCC News

At the start of every workday, Cristian Jay Briones receives a list of schools, restaurants and shopping malls scattered across the Philippine city of Batangas. His job: travel to each location, collect everything that can be recycled, which always includes plastic waste, then sort and weigh his cache. The work is challenging and fulfilling, says Briones, who is part of a waste pickers’ collective known as the San Jose Sico Landfill Multipurpose Cooperative.

“We know we’re contributing to the environment, not just for our own benefit but also helping others,” says the 26-year-old.

Briones is one of an estimated 20 million people around the world who earn a living by collecting, sorting and selling waste, including plastic. In developing countries without formal reuse and recycling systems, these waste pickers are on the frontlines of the effort to tackle plastic pollution, which experts say is a mounting threat to the environment.

This year’s World Environment Day, celebrated on June 5, focuses on solutions to end plastic pollution, including how to spur what experts call a just transition towards a circular economy for plastics and the role often-marginalized communities, including waste pickers, have in that future.

“Informal waste pickers play a crucial role in plastic waste management, especially in many developing countries,” says Elisa Tonda, Chief of the Resources and Markets Branch of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).

“The success of the global fight against plastic pollution depends on our joint commitment to not leave anyone behind and to integrate waste pickers in designing the solution to address plastic pollution.”

In 2024 alone, humanity generated an estimated 400 million tons of plastic waste, contributing to an ongoing plastic pollution crisis experts say is damaging fragile ecosystems and exposing people to potential risk of exposure to harmful chemicals in plastics and also pollutants, like microplastics. need for actions to safeguard it.

“As young people, we’re in the perfect position to lead efforts to restore these ecosystems. We’ve got the energy, creativity, and passion to make a real difference,” he said.

The forum brought together stakeholders from government, academe, civil society and youth organizations to discuss the urgent need to protect marine ecosystems and enhance coastal resilience in the face of worsening climate impacts, while highlighting the value of partnerships.

Adobo acknowledged the continuing collaboration between the DENR and the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR), noting the joint efforts under the BMB (Biodiversity Management Bureau)-BFAR Convergence Initiative to promote marine biodiversity conservation and sustainable fisheries. PNA

World likely to top 1.5°C limit in next five years

FACT: 2024 was the warmest year on record–but the heat is far from over.

A new report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) warns that global temperatures will likely continue rising, with an 80 percent chance that at least one year between now and 2029 will be even hotter.

According to the Global Annual to Decadal Climate Update, the planet is predicted to experience temperatures between 1.2°C and 1.9°C above preindustrial levels (1850–1900) over the next five years. In 2024, the WMO estimated that the average global temperature was between 1.34°C and 1.41°C higher than pre-industrial levels (18501900). The WMO now projects the 20-year average warming for 2015–2034 to reach around 1.44°C above pre-industrial levels.

The report finds a staggering 86 percent chance that global average temperatures will exceed 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels in at least one of the next five years, and a one percent chance of one of those years exceeding 2°C of warming.

There is a 70 percent chance that the five-year average itself will exceed this 1.5 degree threshold.

The WMO stressed that the 1.5°C Paris Agreement target refers to longterm averages over 20 years, meaning its threshold has not been breached quite yet.

However, these near-term spikes are warning signs of an accelerating climate crisis.

The forecast also highlights regional precipitation impacts, including wetter-than-average conditions expected in the African Sahel, northern Europe and South Asia. Conversely, the Amazon region could see continued drought. The situation is even more catastrophic in the Arctic than in the rest of the world. The average Arctic temperature over the next five winters (November to March) is expected to be 2.4°C warmer than the 1991–2020 average, more than three and a half times the increase in the global average temperature. WHEN Gabbi Garcia enewed her exclusive contract with GMA, she didn’t just sign papers - she brought the room back to where it all started: rejection, doubt, and the quiet determination to keep showing up.

“It was like passing through the eye of the needle,” she said, recalling how many times she was turned away in auditions and VTRs during her early years. And yet, despite the many doors that closed on her, GMA took a chance - even when she didn’t have much to show for it.

That leap of faith was eleven years ago.

Gabbi was just fifteen when she entered showbiz in 2014, landing a role in “My Destiny” alongside Carla Abellana and Tom Rodriguez. From there, the network steadily gave her opportunities, including her first lead role in “Let the Love Begin,” where she starred opposite then-boyfriend Ruru Madrid

In an industry where fame can feel fleeting and talent often requires the right timing and backing to shine, Gabbi’s story is a reminder that recognition doesn’t always come easilybut it comes to those who hold out.

Among Gabbi’s notable shows in GMA are: Unbreak My Heart, Mga Lihim ni Urduja, Sherlock Jr., InstaDad, Beautiful Justice, Love You Stranger, Pamilya Roces, Victor Magtanggol, and the currently airing Slay and

Could basketball star Terrence Romeo score in showbiz?

BASKETBALL star Terrence Romeo, known for his flashy moves and clutch performances on the court, has playfully entertained the idea of trying his luck in show business. But is this just lighthearted banter, or could the threetime PBA champion actually carve out a second career in entertainment?

During a recent press conference for his endorsement deal with online gaming brand ABC VIP, Terrence was asked about potential acting opportunities. His response was succinct: “I don’t think I know how to act.” If given the chance, would he be open to working with Vice Ganda?

Terrence simply answered, “Why not? Who am I to

say no?”

Vice Ganda and Terrence have long been the subject of rumors about a past romantic relationship, but both have publicly denied the speculation.

Terrence admitted he’s never tested his acting chops but expressed interest in action roles or villainous characters—a natural fit for his confident, sometimes polarizing public persona. When comedy was suggested, he didn’t rule it out either.

Still, the 33-year-old star player quickly tempered expectations, joking that the line of questioning was getting “too intense” for his recent return to the public eye. His cautious approach suggests he’s aware of the risks. After all, he’s still focused on his basketball career with the PBA’s Terrafirma Dyip, where he remains a key player.

But as we all know, Terrence is no stranger to controversy. In 2022, his name was dragged into legal issues involving his ex-wife, leading to heavy online criticism.

MARIAH Carey, the best-selling female artist in history with over 200 million records sold worldwide, has released “Type Dangerous,” the lead single from her highly anticipated 16th studio album—her first new project since 2017.

Produced alongside N.W.I. and Daniel Moore incorporates a sample from Eric B. & Rakim classic “Eric B is President,” fusing Carey’s soaring vocals with a vintage rap beat.

“I’m so excited to finally be releasing ‘Type Dangerous’ into the world!” Carey said. “I’ve been working nonstop in the studio on this new music, and I can’t wait for my fans to hear what we’ve created.”

A companion music video, helmed by frequent collaborator Joseph Kahn—director of Carey’s “#Beautiful” and “All I Want for Christmas Is You”—will follow in the coming days. The pair’s recent holiday-themed “It’s Time” video amassed millions of views in November. This release comes just in time for Mariah’s upcoming acceptance of the BET Ultimate Icon Award on Monday, June 9, celebrating her status as one of the greatest pop artists of all time. Mariah will also be performing live in just over a week, taking the stage as headliner at Capital’s Summertime Ball on Sunday, June 15, at Wembley Stadium.

“I’ve experienced a lot of bashing, but what affected me the most were the baseless ones,” he said. “People jump to conclusions as if they were there.”

“In fact, I was the one deceived, the one who lost money, the one who was pushed into investments. Many people helped me, like my former boss, Boss RSA. I owe him a lot because I’ve proven that I never talked to or deceived anyone just to profit from them. Those hurtful comments affected my life, even though I had no part in it,” he said in the vernacular.

Though currently off the court, Terrence remains hopeful that his basketball career will continue

smoothly. And since his contract with Terrafirma is ending this August, he’s already planning his next career move.

“I’m doing okay right now. I’m just focused on myself, my family, and my career. I have options on where I can play or what direction my career might take,” Terrence explained. “Hopefully, there will still be new opportunities to play in the PBA or elsewhere.”

A DATA binge or a fancy dinner could now redefine indulgence, thanks to a new push for purpose-driven experiences.

On May 28, Globe Telecom officially launched a sustainability masterbrand that ties together its wide-ranging environmental and social programs into one accessible platform. The launch, held at Globe’s Valero Telepark in Makati, spotlighted how the telecom giant aims to make everyday moments count toward lasting impact

Two featured programs demonstrated this goal in action. GoGIVE, a new initiative under Globe Prepaid, lets users support partner causes simply by using mobile data. The program, integrated into the GlobeOne app, rewards customers with virtual “hearts” that can be donated to organizations supporting animal welfare, indigenous education, women’s digital literacy, medical research, and more.

How everyday habits turn into acts of good

The concept taps into the everyday habits of young, socially aware Filipinos, especially those who are already streaming, posting, and scrolling throughout the day.

“Imagine every post, every video, every scroll on your phone contributing to something bigger,” said Givielle Florida, Head of Globe Prepaid, during the event.

Luxe yet pre-loved, at Reuse

D“That’s what GoGIVE is about—it’s using what people already do online to support the causes they care about.”

Meanwhile, Globe Platinum revived its fine dining charity series under a new name, Gastronome Giving. The program, created in partnership with Fine Dining Club Philippines, connects culinary experiences with community upliftment.

Customers can book tables at select high-end restaurants across the country, with a portion of proceeds going to the Hapag Movement, Globe’s flagship hunger alleviation initiative.

Participating restaurants include Anzani in Cebu, Roots in Siargao, and Taupe in BGC, among others, each chosen not only for their menus but for their stories.

“We’re not

“We’re championing philanthropy, serving hope, dignity, and care. Every meal becomes an opportunity for giving.” Through these programs, the company hopes to show that advocacy can start with a tap, a post, or a reservation—and that even small gestures can lead to real impact.

so Como 88, also known as the bag lover’s heaven. The boutique was born out of Imelda Menguito’s love for anything Italian. Back then, she was working as a chef in Florence, considered the leather capital of Europe. Between cooking breaks, she would roam the streets of Florence and shop to her heart’s content. Her passion for stylish leather accessories evolved—from buying bags

for personal use to choosing bags for friends and eventually curating a complete merchandise lineup that appeals to Filipino shoppers. Starting as an online store, she later opened Corso Como 88 in Ayala the 30th and One Ayala. Reuse is the storeowner’s way of supporting global efforts to minimize environmental impact. By extending the life of an accessory like a bag, waste materials and carbon footprints associated with manufacturing new products are reduced. She shared that popular concept stores in Europe incorporate sustainable components. “In Italy, they now have ecopele or recycled leather. They have bags made from vegetable and fruit peels,” she said. The items sold at Reuse are sourced directly from owners. “We do not accept items from people we do not know. The bags are from my own clients. Usually, if they want to upgrade their bags, they consign their pre-loved bags with us. All items are authentic and come with complete documentation, including the original brand card and dustbag. “The bags all look new, not worn out.

Sometimes I even bring them abroad to have them fixed,” she added. Notably, most of Reuse’s clients are aged 20–35. “The younger ones like them because they have history, retain value, and are somewhat affordable. I guess the older ones have the money to buy brand new.”

As for pricing, beyond physical condition, the storeowner considers other factors: “When was it released? Did it become famous? If it’s a rare piece, the price is higher. In Europe, vintage bags cost more than new ones, especially if limited edition or phased out.” She cited the Balenciaga Mini City Edge as an example—phased out yet sought after by collectors willing to pay a premium for pre-loved editions. Generally, popular brands retain high resale value, making luxe bags a solid investment.

“Nowadays, shoppers don’t just look at the brand—they prioritize quality and craftsmanship. Recently, there’s also growing interest in vintage bags.” Apart from visiting the store, interested buyers can browse pre-loved pieces on the store’s official website.
