VATICAN City —Hundreds of thousands of mourners and world leaders packed St. Peter’s Square on Saturday for the funeral of Pope Francis -- the “pope among the people” and the Catholic Church’s first Latin American leader hailed for his unwavering spirit of sacrifice.
“Despite his final fragility and suffering, Pope Francis chose to walk the path of selfgiving until the last day of his earthly life,” Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re said in his funeral homily.
“He followed in the footsteps of his Lord, the Good Shepherd, who loved his sheep to the point of giving his own life for them. And he did so with strength and serenity, remaining close to his flock, the Church of God.”
More than 50 heads of state, including US President Donald Trump and Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., were also present at the solemn ceremony.

ARRIVING in Rome after Pope Francis’ death, Catholic cardinals have admitted some apprehension at the responsibility of choosing his successor, as they begin setting out what they hope to see in the next head of the Church. The task of choosing a new pope to replace the Argentine, who died on Monday aged 88, “is beyond us and yet requires us,” said French cardinal Jean-Marc Aveline, summing up the mood after celebrating a mass on Thursday evening.
“We feel very small. We have to make decisions for the whole Church, so we really need to pray for ourselves,” added Luxembourg’s Jean-Claude Hollerich, a Jesuit who was a close advisor to Francis.
The conclave is likely to begin right after the nine days of mourning declared by the Holy See, which end on May 4, he said, adding that he was approaching the occasion with “great hope” but also “a certain apprehension.”
the vast square in front of St Peter’s Basilica, with the Vatican reporting some 250,00 people attended, in an outpouring of support for the Argentine pontiff.
The crowds applauded as the pope’s coffin was carried out of the basilica by white gloved pallbearers, accompanied by more than 200 red-robed cardinals, and then again as it was taken back after the approximately two-hour mass.
Around 150,000 people lined the route to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore as the popemobile carrying the coffin of the Argentine was driven to his final resting place.
ROME—The Santa Maria Maggiore Basilica, which Pope Francis chose as his final resting place, is a fifth-cen-
tury church located in the center of Rome that already holds the tombs of seven popes.
The basilica holds some of the Church’s most important relics, including an icon of the Virgin Mary holding the baby Jesus, attributed to Saint Luke.
It also holds pieces of wood believed to have been from Jesus’s crib.
The basilica’s website says recent studies have dated the wood from
the period of Jesus’s birth. Francis, who died on Monday aged 88, was be the first pontiff in more than a century not to be entombed in St Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican.
Francis was very devoted to the worship of the Virgin Mary and made a point of praying in Santa Maria Maggiore before leaving on trips abroad and upon his return to Rome.
Most recently, Francis prayed to the icon of the Virgin Mary inside the basilica on April 12, to mark the beginning of the Holy Week that culminated in Easter. Francis declared his desire to be entombed in the basilica – known in English as the Basilica of Saint Mary Major – in 2023. The last pope to be buried there was Clement IX in 1669. The last pontiff to be buried outside the Vatican was Leo XIII in 1903, whose final resting place

“Pope Francis gave us more than hope,” Romualdez said after the commemoration, titled Paghinumdom: A Tribute of Gratitude.
“He showed the world how to lead with compassion. He stood with us—not just as a Pope, but as a father to the suffering. His presence gave us strength to rise.”
“He gave us the courage to begin again. When we felt forgotten, he remembered. When we were broken, he came to bless the brokenness. That is something no people ever forget,” he added.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has vetoed a bill seeking
to amend the charter of the Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), citing potential conflicts with existing laws and risks to the government’s fiscal stability.
In a message dated April 24 and transmitted to Congress, Mr. Marcos acknowledged the good intentions behind the bill but said he could not disregard concerns raised by national agencies.
He flagged several issues, including a proposed P100 billion increase in BCDA’s authorized capital, which he said could strain the government’s fiscal position and affect its fiscal integrity.
Mr. Marcos also pointed out that the proposal allowing the BCDA to retain most proceeds from the sale of ecozone lands was inconsistent with the government’s one-fund policy, thereby limiting fiscal flexibility for more pressing national concerns.
Additionally, he emphasized that the bill improperly grants the BCDA the authority to declare lands as alienable and disposable—powers that belong to the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR).
“In addition, the bill antithetically grants to the BCDA the authority to determine alienable and disposable lands, which clearly falls under the mandate of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources,” President Marcos said, adding that the measure also contradicts the Supreme Court ruling in Republic v. Heirs of Bernabe, which affirms that the state remains the beneficial owner of lands transferred to the BCDA under Republic Act No. 7227.
ranks, potentially reaching director or assistant secretary levels.
“In every sector, there could be sleeper cells,” Tolentino said.
“We don’t know yet how deep it
goes. It’s something that our security officials need to assess carefully,” he added.
Tolentino, who is running in the 2025 midterm polls, said the idea of long-serving government employees possibly acting as foreign agents is “surprising and worrying,” adding that it highlights the need for regular background checks even for veteran civil servants.
“It’s not about pointing fingers,” he said.
“It’s about making sure we are protecting our institutions and the
people who rely on them,” he added.
Tolentino said his proposal for regular vetting isn’t aimed at creating suspicion among government workers but rather at strengthening trust in public institutions.
“There should be a fair, regular system of checking backgrounds, so we can be confident that the people serving our country are loyal to it,” he said.
Earlier this week, the National Security Council flagged possible meddling by China in the upcoming 2025 midterm polls.

THE Private Sector Advisory Council (PSAC) has urged the government to accelerate efforts in digital transformation, cybersecurity, and workforce development to help the Philippines compete in an increasingly techdriven global economy.
In a meeting at Malacañang Palace with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., PSAC’s digital infrastructure sector welcomed the President’s support for the business process outsourcing (BPO) industry, particularly his endorsement of an annual upskilling budget for up to 340,000 BPO workers, including near-hires and students.
“This budget allocation will help prepare the workforce for the ongoing AI-driven transformation of the
global economy,” said PSAC digital infrastructure lead and chairperson of MDI Group Holdings Inc. Myla Villanueva.
She added that the move is vital in preparing the workforce for rapid shifts driven by artificial intelligence (AI).
The PSAC called on the government to fast-track key digital transformation priorities such as the National ID system, digital payments, data governance, and cybersecurity.
A central proposal was the adoption of a “government as a service” model—an integrated, app-like system that allows citizens to access services like document processing and fee payments through a single digital platform.
To advance this, PSAC recom -

With increasing threats, the PSAC also urged the swift passage of the Cybersecurity Bill and committed to working with government agencies on risk assessments and training new cybersecurity professionals.
“These initiatives are not just for tech experts—they are for all Filipinos. They are key to improving government services, protecting digital lives, and creating futureready jobs,” said Sabin Aboitiz, PSAC lead convenor and Aboitiz Group president and CEO.
THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is strengthening its support for solo parent-headed families through the Program SOLo, or Strengthening Opportunities for Lone Parents, an initiative designed to complement Republic Act 11861 or the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act. DSWD spokesperson Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao said the program aims to empower solo parents not only through economic assistance but also with holistic, technology-aided psychosocial support.
“The Program SOLo is crafted with the realities of solo parents in mind— acknowledging the daily challenges they face while raising children singlehandedly,” Dumlao said. It primarily targets families with two to three children under 22 years old, especially those living close to each other, and promotes transformation to help families live secure (“matatag”), comfortable (“maginhawa”), and resilient (“panatag”) lives. THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) reported Saturday that 158 complaints have been filed with the Commission on Elections (Comelec) regarding alleged vote buying, vote selling, and the misuse of government resources in connection with the May 12 midterm elections.
DILG Assistant Secretary Jesi Lanete said that among the complaints, 16 involved the alleged distribution of financial assistance or ayuda, which is prohibited under Section 33 of Comelec Resolution 11104. he distribution of ayuda by
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) on Saturday reminded the public that it will implement a 10-day ban on the distribution of government assistance, or ayuda, ahead of the May 12 polls.
“From May 2 to May 12, all forms of ayuda are prohibited,” Comelec Chairman George Garcia said during an interview on Super Radyo dzBB. Garcia clarified that the ban will cover programs such as Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS), the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), and the Ayuda para sa Kapos ang Kita Program (AKAP).
Previously, the Comelec had granted exemptions to these financial aid programs from the election spending ban. However, it has now ruled that distributing any form of ayuda during the 10-day period leading up to the elections will be considered a violation. Under the Omnibus Election Code, election offenses—including violations of spending and distribution bans—are punishable by imprisonment of not less than one year but not more than six years, among other

penalties.
The Comelec also granted an exemption to the Department of Agriculture’s P20 per kilo Rice Project from the 45-day election spending ban, provided local government units (LGUs) obtain separate certificates of exemption if they intend to resell the rice at a subsidized price.
Ahead of the 2025 midterm elections, Vice President Sara Duterte meanwhile urged the public to reject candidates from political dynasties, those engaging in vote buying, and politicians who fail to deliver on their campaign promises.
She called on voters to support leaders genuinely committed to driving meaningful change in the country.
Duterte stressed the importance of scrutinizing candidates’ platforms and promises, especially since many pledges from previous elections have remained unfulfilled.
“For example, we all know that in 2022, BBM promised rice at P20 per kilo. That promise was forgotten for three years. Now, with another election approaching, the same P20 per kilo rice promise is once again being floated by the administration,” Duterte said.

candidates, their relatives up to the second civil degree, or known supporters during the election period is presumed to be an act of vote buying.
DILG Secretary Juanito Victor Remulla expressed full support for Comelec’s “Kontra Bigay” campaign and emphasized the importance of a corresponding “Kontra Tanggap” effort to address both sides of electoral misconduct.
The regions with the highest number of complaints include Region IV-A (Calabarzon) with 31, Region III (Central Luzon) with 30, and
the National Capital Region with 24. As a result of these reports, Comelec has issued show-cause orders to 29 local candidates, asking them to respond to the complaints. Among those named are Marikina City mayoral candidate Stella Quimbo and her husband, congressional candidate Romero Quimbo; Manila mayoral candidates Isko Moreno, Sam Versoza, and incumbent Mayor Honey Lacuna; and Laguna gubernatorial candidate Dan Fernandez. Lanete reminded all candidates to refrain from engaging in vote
buying, vote selling, or misuse of state resources, warning that violations could lead to disqualification. Meanwhile, concerns over political violence continue to mount following the fatal shooting of a reelectionist mayor in Cagayan province.
Former Senator Panfilo “Ping” Lacson on Saturday called on the Philippine National Police (PNP) to strengthen its intelligence efforts after Rizal, Cagayan Mayor Joel Ruma was shot dead during a campaign rally on Wednesday evening at the Illuru Sur barangay hall.

ALYANSA Para sa Bagong Pilipinas senatorial bet and Makati Mayor Abby Binay urged voters to support the group’s full senatorial slate, stressing the need for a unified team in the Senate to push for real change and deliver on campaign promises.
Speaking at a press conference in Dagupan City, Binay said it would be futile to elect candidates who do not share the same vision and aspirations.
Binay emphasized that an individual senator cannot effect legislative reforms alone, underscoring the Senate’s collegial nature. “Even if I win, if my colleagues who also win don’t share my advocacies, I still won’t be able to push my platform,” she said. She added that teamwork is critical in achieving legislative success.
Highlighting the need for collective campaigning, Binay explained that candidates must promote the entire slate, not just themselves.
Binay stressed that Alyansa Para sa Bagong Pilipinas adopts a group-centered campaign approach, always promoting the team over individual candidacies.“It cannot just be‘me’; it must always be ‘us,’”she said. Joining Binay on the Alyansa slate are Benhur Abalos, Pia Cayetano, Panfilo

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) is set to launch a home delivery service for license plates and driver’s licenses using new digital technology, in line with President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s directive to bring government services closer to the people.
Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II said the service, called LTOTracker, will allow clients to track their documents in real time and have them delivered straight to their doorsteps via accredited courier services.
Secretary Vince Dizon hailed the LTOTracker as a “gamechanging innovation,” saying it will eliminate the long queues and delays traditionally associated with Land Transportation Office (LTO) transactions. While the new service will prioritize digital delivery, clients will still have the option to pick up their documents personally if they prefer.
Mendoza explained that the Motor Vehicle Plate and Driver’s License Delivery Services also aim to resolve the country’s long-standing backlog of motor vehicle plates dating back to 2014.

THREE suspected human traffickers have been charged before the Pasay City Prosecutor’s Office for allegedly victimizing seven Filipino workers who were forced to work in a scam hub in Cambodia, the Bureau of Immigration reported.
Immigration Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado said the victims were promised legitimate jobs but were instead coerced into cyber scam operations under conditions of severe abuse. The victims, recruited online, were instructed to pose as tourists to avoid detection. Upon their arrival in Myanmar, they were detained in scam compounds where they faced beatings, electrocution, and psychological abuse, with no rest days and withheld compensation if they failed to meet scam quotas. Despite enduring physical and emotional trauma, many victims were initially reluctant to testify against their traffickers, fearing the suspects’ wealth and legal influence. Authorities said overcoming this fear was crucial to bringing charges against the perpetrators. The victims’ repatriation was made possible through the coordinated efforts of the Philippine government, involving the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA), Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA), Department of Migrant Workers (DMW), Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), and the Philippine Embassy in Cambodia. WASHINGTON —Federal agents on Friday
(Saturday, Manila time) arrested a US judge for allegedly shielding an undocumented migrant, escalating a struggle between the White House and courts over President Donald Trump’s hardline deportation policies.
Hannah Dugan, a Milwaukee County circuit judge, allegedly “intentionally misdirected federal agents away from the subject” whom agents were intending to detain at her courthouse, FBI director Kash Patel said in a post on X.
She was arrested on charges of obstruction, Patel said in his post.
“Thankfully our agents chased down the perp on foot and he’s been in custody since, but the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public,” Patel said.
The Trump-appointed director deleted his post minutes after it appeared, but later reposted it.
Patel wrote “No one is above the law” in another post on X, accompanied with a photo of a handcuffed person being led to an unmarked vehicle with tinted windows. The image is taken from behind, and the only faces in the photo have been blurred out.
“From the bench to the backseat. This is what accountability looks like,” wrote Donald Trump Jr., who shared the post, suggesting the handcuffed person in the photo was Dugan.
The incident has set off a torrent of criticism by Democrats and applause by some Republicans.
Pam Bondi, who as US attorney general oversees the FBI, defended the arrest of Dugan, and issued

CANADA VOTES IN ELECTION UPENDED BY TRUMP THREATS
MONTREAL— Canada will hold an election Monday following a campaign electrified by US President Donald Trump’s threats, with Prime Minister Mark Carney favored to win after promising voters he has the experience to stand up to the United States.
A victory for Carney’s Liberal Party would mark one of the most dramatic turnarounds in Canadian political history.
On January 6, the day former prime minister Justin Trudeau announced his plans to resign, his Liberals trailed the Conservatives by more than 20 points in most
polls, and Tory leader Pierre Poilievre looked certain to be Canada’s next premier.
Over the following weeks, Trump chaotically rolled out his trade war while repeatedly talking about absorbing Canada into the United States.
Outraged Canadians booed the American anthem at sporting events and cancelled US travel plans.
When Carney replaced the unpopular Trudeau on March 14, he anchored his message squarely on the Trump threat, claiming the US “wants to break us, so they can own us.” AFP
BEIJING—President Xi Jinping said China must“overcome”the challenges of developing core AI technologies including high-end chips, state media reported Saturday, as Beijing seeks to become a world leader in the rapidly developing industry.
China aims to dominate the artificial intelligence sector, a goal complicated by the trade standoff with Washington that could further deprive Chinese industry of certain key technologies.
The world’s two leading economies are locked in an escalating tit-for-tat trade battle triggered by US President Donald Trump’s new levies on Chinese
goods, which have reached 145 percent on many products. Beijing has responded with new 125 percent duties on imports from the United States.
In this context, Xi called for “continuing to strengthen basic research, focusing our efforts on overcoming challenges in key technologies such as advanced chips and core software, and building an autonomous AI system,” according to Xinhua news agency.
Xi made the remarks during a quarterly meeting of the Politburo, the inner circle of China’s top leaders. AFP

‘A pope with an open heart’
Francis, who died on Monday aged 88, was “a pope among the people, with an open heart,” who strove for a more compassionate, open-minded Catholic Church, Battista Re said.
There was applause again from the masses gathered under bright blue skies as he hailed the pope’s “conviction that the Church is a home for all, a home with its doors always open.”
Francis sought to steer the centuries-old Church into a more inclusive direction during his 12-year papacy, and his death prompted a global outpouring of emotion.

The Speaker also reflected on the historic image of the Pope celebrating Mass under stormy skies in a yellow raincoat, a moment that became emblematic of the solidarity between the Church and the suffering Filipino people.

ROME—Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky met briefly in St. Peter’s Basilica on the sidelines of Pope Francis’ funeral in the Vatican on Saturday in their first encounter since a White House clash as the US president pushes the Ukrainian leader to make a peace deal with Russia.
The two agreed to further talks after the funeral, the Ukraine president’s office said, after Zelensky’s aide described the first meeting as “constructive” and the White House called it “a very productive discussion.”
The Ukrainian presidency released photos of the two men sitting face to face, leaning forward in deep discussion in a corner of the basilica, before the start of the funeral.
Another photo showed the two leaders in a huddle inside the basilica with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer and Emmanuel Macron, the French president’s hand on Zelensky’s shoulder.
Outside in St Peter’s Square, Trump rubbed shoulders with dozens of world leaders keen to bend his ear on the tariffs he has unleashed and other subjects.
But it was the meeting with Zelensky that drew the most interest as the US leader pushed the Ukrainian to make a peace deal with Russia.
“The meeting took place and is already over,” Zelensky’s spokesman Sergiy Nykyforov told journalists without providing further detail.
White House communications director Steven Cheung also confirmed the meeting occurred, calling it “a very productive discussion” and saying more details would follow. AFP
“It’s a bit like the center of the world today.” Italian and Vatican authorities mounted a major security operation for the ceremony, with fighter jets on standby and snipers positioned on roofs surrounding the tiny city state.
After the funeral, the pope’s simple wooden coffin was put onto a white popemobile for a slow drive through the streets of Rome to the basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The funeral sets off the first of nine days of official Vatican mourning for Francis, who took over following the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI in 2013.
After the mourning, cardinals will gather for the conclave to elect a new pope to lead the world’s 1.4 billion Catholics.
‘Build bridges, not walls’ Many of Francis’s reforms angered traditionalists, while his criticism of
kan and one of the electors in the forthcoming conclave, Cardinal Pablo Virgilio David, appealed to Roman Catholics to offer prayers for the cardinals who will elect the successor of the late Pope Francis next month.
In a social media post on Friday night, he said praying would be a much better move than pushing for certain candidates.
“Let us accompany the electors with our prayers, not our preferences. Let us fast from speculation and feast on hope. Let us encourage one another to deepen our faith, trusting that the Lord – who has not abandoned His Church – will once again raise up a shepherd after His own heart,” said David, who is also the president of the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines. barreled through the eastern part of the country in 2013, the late pontiff said he was at a loss for words amid the devastation he saw.

Many of you have asked the Lord, ‘Why, Lord?’ And to each of you, Christ responds from His heart upon the Cross,” the late Pope said in his impromptu homily during his visit.
injustices, from the treatment of migrants to the damage wrought by global warming, riled many world leaders.
Yet the former archbishop of Buenos Aires’s compassion and charisma earned him global affection and respect.

He recalled the first trip of Francis’s papacy to Lampedusa, an Italian island that is often the first port of call for migrants crossing the Mediterranean, as well as when the Argentine celebrated mass on the border between Mexico and the US.

is the Church of Saint John Lateran, the Cathedral of the bishop of Rome.
One of four papal basilicas in Rome, Santa Maria Maggiore holds the remains of several other renowned personalities, such as the architect and sculptor Gian Lorenzo Bernini, who designed St Peter’s Square and its surrounding columns.
The interior of Santa Maria Maggiore remains close to its origins. The central nave is lined by 40 Ionic columns and contains exquisite mosaics.
One legend ties the basilica to the Virgin Mary from its origins. It says that a childless wealthy Roman couple wanted to donate their possessions to the Virgin Mary.
She appeared to them in a vision and told them to build a church in her honor, where a miracle would take place. Snow fell that summer night in August 352 on the hill where the basilica now stands.
Another legend has Pope Liberius being told in a dream of the summer snowfall.
According to the Vatican, however, nothing remains of that original church. Construction of the current basilica began around 432 under Pope Sixtus III. AFP

Trip.com’s latest consumer insights reveal a cultural shift, where travelers are increasingly planning trips around live events—concerts, sports, festivals—rather than destinations alone.
This is consistent with a broader global trend where experiences now outweigh material purchases in value.
“Travel is no longer a luxury—it’s a priority. And that shift is opening up new ways for us to support travelers, especially here in the Philippines where the appetite for rich, meaningful experiences is clearly on the rise,” Ru noted.
SECURING TRUST
With AI at the core of Trip.com’s future, the company also keeps a close eye on emerging risks.
While Ru did not detail specific countermeasures, she assured that the responsible use of AI remains paramount, particularly as issues like deepfakes and misinformation begin to touch the travel space.
“We focus on trust, personalization, and real-time intelligence. And we’re always evolving our tools to stay ahead of the curve,” she said.
Trip.com’s strategy in the Philippines reflects its global direction: empower travelers through tech, localize the experience, and build partnerships that make the journey more seamless and rewarding. Othel V. Campos
THE 26th Search for Outstanding Accounting Students in the Philippines (SOASP), held in partnership with the P&A Grant Thornton Foundation, Inc., honored exemplary students in a culminating event on March 21, 2025, at the Makati Diamond Hotel.
Together with P&A Grant Thornton, the Philippine Institute of Certified Public Accountants (PICPA) and the Association of Certified Public Accountants in Commerce and Industry (ACPACI) continue to recognize and nurture the next generation of accounting professionals through SOASP. This year’s edition drew 455 students from 92 schools nationwide, with only 25 advancing to the final round.
Marjorie Mae Dy of the University of San Carlos emerged as champion. Placing second and third were Hannah Katrina de Vera and Vincent Michael Pacaña, both
from Kingfisher School of Business and Finance. Rounding out the top five were Raymund Franco Satorre of Bulacan State University (4th) and Nicole Valerie Tan of UP Diliman (5th).
John Elrich Gamboa, also from UP Diliman, received a special award for achieving the highest score in the qualifying exam.
“This is not just about winning, but about the journey and the growth you’ve experienced along the way. Find joy in the process and let your passion shine through, because when you love what you do, success naturally follows,” said P&A Grant Thornton Foundation chairman and managing partner of P&A Grant Thornton Romualdo V. IN CELEBRATION of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26, 2025,
TikTok Shop partnered with the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines (IPOPHL) to heighten merchant education and promote stronger intellectual property (IP) protection in digital marketplaces.
As part of its ongoing commitment to IP rights governance and its role as a signatory of the IPOPHL e-Commerce memorandum of understanding (MOU), TikTok Shop hosted an IP Bootcamp in collaboration with IPOPHL.
“Proactive stakeholder engagements, such as our MOU with the IPOPHL and initiatives like IP Bootcamp and participation in the Unreal Campaign, reflect TikTok Shop’s continuous investment in safeguarding authenticity in digital commerce,” said TikTok Shop Public Policy manager Simoun Salinas.
The workshop equipped sellers and rights holders with tools to safeguard their brands on the platform, including anti-counterfeiting strategies, notice and takedown procedures, and broader industry challenges.
TikTok Shop also participates in the International Trademark Association’s (INTA) Unreal Campaign, which educates students about the dangers of counterfeit products and the value of trademarks.
The social media platform recently engaged students at Lipa City Colleges (LCC) in a bootcamp session, sharing the impact of IP rights on businesses, consumers, and society.
TikTok Shop continues to enforce a robust IPR protection framework. From July 2023 to June 2024, over 5.2 million product listings were removed globally before going live, with nearly 500,000 more taken down for IPR violations.
The platform also acted against more than 294,000 livestreams and 503,000 videos flagged for potential IP issues.
“Strengthening IP protection requires collaboration among platforms, regulators, and brand owners. The IP Bootcamp ensures digital businesses are well-equipped to protect innovation and consumer trust,” said IPOPHL deputy director general Nathaniel S.

MEMBERS of the motoring media put the new Kia Sorento through its paces across the winding roads and steep passes of Benguet, aiming to reveal just how robust this turbo hybrid truly is. Tackling terrain you wouldn’t normally take your family SUV to, the all-wheel-drive Sorento confidently conquered every kilometer—even when fully loaded— much more impressively as you would expect.
The Sorento Hybrid’s powertrain, an electric motor-paired 1.6-liter turbocharged engine delivers a combined output that feels far more muscular than its modest displacement suggests. Fit that into a unibody cabin providing a ride that’s as executive, plush, and composed as it should be (especially for those seated on the second row) and you get a refined SUV whose composure remains intact even when the going gets tough, as proven on the rocky trails to Lake Lubo.
All told, the New Kia Sorento Turbo Hybrid is more than just an embodiment of efficiency and all-around capability — it’s a modest SUV more than ready to deliver either elegance or ruggedness - or both - at any given time. With prices starting at PHP2,188,000 (base 4x2 variant), this premium 7-seater is punching as prime choice in the market today. Rightfully, a flag-bearing model for Kia, alongside the Carnival.

ESTORIL , Portugal – Forty years after Ayrton Senna’s maiden Formula 1 victory at the 1985 Portuguese Grand Prix, the iconic Lotus 97T returned to the very circuit where history was made. In a poignant tribute, Ayrton’s nephew, Bruno Senna, took the wheel of the legendary machine, commemorating a milestone that not only marked the beginning of a celebrated career but also underscored Lotus’s innovative spirit in the sport.
The event last April 21st served as a powerful intersection of anniversaries: the 75th year of Formula 1 and the enduring legacy of Lotus within it. More than just a remembrance of Ayrton Senna’s brilliance, it was a homage to the collective efforts of engineers, designers, and drivers who propelled the British racing outfit to greatness.
Senna’s victory in the torrential rain at Estoril remains etched in Formula 1 lore. In a display of masterful car control, the Brazilian prodigy lapped almost the entire field, securing the first of his eventual 41 Grand Prix wins. Senna himself considered FREE SERVICES, ACCESSORIES WITH HYUNDAI TEST DRIVE PROMO
this drive his finest, famously dismissing the widespread acclaim for his 1993 Donington Park victory by stating, “No way! I had traction control there. It was a good win but compared with Estoril ‘85 it was nothing.”
The Lotus 97T, the very chariot of that triumph, was itself a groundbreaking piece of engineering. It pioneered the use of vertical aerodynamic devices positioned behind the front wheels, an early iteration of what would evolve into the sophisticated bargeboards that are now integral to modern F1 aerodynamics.
Ayrton Senna remains a powerful name in motorsport, and a positive influence on society in many ways - from educational impact to sustainable innovation, and as a movement that continues to inspire generations to pursue their dream and never give up.”

National head coach Duchess Francine Co highlighted the crucial role of coaching in the Philippines’ recent medal haul at the 2023 World Championships held in Puerto Princesa City. I’m proud and grateful—at 50, parang di ako makapaniwala na ma-qualify dito sa Boston,” she shared with joy and humility. “Consistency is not about age. I train three to four times a week, and my coach has been a huge part of my success. Masayang-masaya ako. Para sa akin ok ang panahon, sunny and konting wind”.
Running has become a way of life for De Weerd. She averages 10 miles a day and dedicates her Saturdays to long runs ranging from 10 to 15 miles. She also incorporates speed work, often training with members of her AV 34 Club, who help push her toward her goals. Now back to her role as a wife, mother, and athlete, De Weerd carries with her not just a medal, but a memory she says she will never forget.
“I’ll forever carry the memories of how hard I worked for this. May this achievement remind me to dream bigger and keep striving every day. MORE than 2,500 participants took part in the recent UST Fun Run, a historic event featuring 5K and 10K categories. The route began at the University of Santo Tomas— the country’s oldest university — and led runners through the storied streets of Manila to Intramuros and back.
For the first time ever, a running event was granted access to the Quezon Bridge, which links UST to Intramuros via Manila City Hall. The use of this iconic route highlighted the cultural and historical importance of the event.
Organized by the BBG Run Group, the fun run aimed to raise funds for various charitable outreach programs.
“This was the first time UST initiated such an event,” said Dr. George Co, a UST alumnus and one of the lead organizers. “The support was overwhelming—not only from fellow alumni but also from the general public.” Dr. Co, a seasoned runner himself, expressed his gratitude: “Thanks to all the runners who answered the call, we’ve raised enough to support outreach programs for the less fortunate.”
AVING a stray animal is not easy. The good news is: there are many ways to save a life. You can feed a stray, rescue one from the street, foster one, or adopt another.
Or you can write a book on stray dogs and help encourage more humans to be kind to strays. Then raise funds to help dogs and cats rescued from the streets.
This is what author Lalaine Duano Manaog-Danao did when she wrote “Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan.”
She is now raising funds to have more copies of the book printed and to help rescued dogs and cats of Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL.
Save ALL shares that there are three kinds of strays:
1. the ones who were born in the streets because their mom was a stray dog;
2. the ones who got lost because they panicked and ran out of the house due to the loud sound of firecrackers; and
3. the ones who were abandoned.
Abandoning a dog is one of the most cruel things a furparent can do to a pet. How can a dog who grew up inside a home adjust to a life of a stray who has to look for and fight for food and space in the streets, who is hurt by cruel humans, and who has to learn to cross the streets without being hit by a vehicle?
The book Derby takes us on a stray dog’s journey from being abandoned, to surviving in the street, and then being adopted. It teaches humans about kindness and resilience.
Danao hopes to encourage more humans to be kind to strays through this book, thus the fundraising event for the book printing and for Save ALL rescues. Dubbed “Walk for Compassion, Walk for Nature,” it will be held at 7 a.m. on May 3, Saturday, at the La Mesa Eco Park, Quezon City.
There will be a pet blessing; free antirabies vaccine; a demo on pet shampoo making; and awarding of walk medals for furparent and pet.
The entrance fee is P499. The participant will get a walk cap, pet bandana, pin badge, and medals.
Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL, an animal welfare group registered with the Securities and Exchange Commission, has rescued over 1,000 dogs and cats from the streets, pounds, and abusive owners for 12 years now. It has had more than 300 dogs and cats spayed or neutered to help in animal population control. It has fed dogs and cats in three pounds, and continues stray feeding in Rizal, Metro Manila, and Bulacan.
The author is the executive director of Tails, Trees and Seas Org. Inc. and president/executive director of Tulay Bahaghari.
She is also a trainer on creative crafts and stories for Filipino children for child development workers and on creative teaching strategies for day care children. She also wrote three other books.
The story behind the story, in the words of author Lalaine Danao:
“Why I wrote the book Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan. As I sat down to write this storybook, I wanted to explore themes of resilience, hope, and human-animal bond. Derby's story resonated with me, and I hoped to inspire empathy and compassion in readers. Through Derby's journey I aimed to highlight the importance
of kindness, adoption, and second chances. I believe stories like Derby can spark positive change and encourage young readers to make a difference in their community.
Writing about Derby also allowed me to shed light on the plight of abandoned animals and the challenges they face. I wanted the children to understand the emotional depth of these animals and the transformative power of love and care. By sharing Derby's story, I aspired to inspire readers to consider rescuing strays, adopting pets and supporting animal welfare initiatives.
I hope that the Derby's tale will encourage the children to look beyond the surface and understand the complexities of animal emotion and needs. Through Derby's experiences, I explored the themes of abandonment, loneliness and ultimately, redemption. I wanted to show how even in the darkest moments, there is always hope for a better tomorrow.
By giving Derby a voice, I hoped to amplify voices of all abandoned animals and bring attention to their struggles. Ultimately, Derby, Ang Asong Iniwan is a testament to the enduring spirit of animals and the profound impact they have on our lives. The book also encourages the readers to become responsible and committed pet owners.
I hope readers especially the kids, find inspiration in Derby's journey and are motivated to make a positive impact in the world. By sharing this story I aim to leave a lasting impression on readers and inspire a deeper appreciation for animals that share our world.” DC

Through these rigorous training stages, service dogs are prepared to become invaluable partners, enhancing the quality of life for individuals with disabilities.
The Impact of Service Dogs
Service dogs are more than just pets; they are trained professionals who provide invaluable support to individuals with disabilities, fostering independence and enhancing their overall well-being. They offer a wide range of benefits, making a significant difference in the lives of those they assist.
Increased Mobility and Safety
For individuals with mobility issues, service dogs act as a lifeline, providing assistance with tasks that may be difficult or impossible to perform independently. They can help with navigating stairs, opening doors, retrieving dropped items, and even pulling wheelchairs. This assistance allows individuals to move freely and safely, enhancing their independence and quality of life.
Improved Communication
Hearing dogs act as a bridge for individuals with hearing impairments, ensuring they are aware of important sounds and events. They can alert their handlers to doorbells, alarms, or even a baby's cry, allowing them to participate fully in their environ-
ment. This improved communication fosters a sense of security and inclusion, reducing feelings of isolation.
Emotional Support and Companionship
Beyond practical assistance, service dogs provide emotional support and companionship, which is crucial for individuals with disabilities. They offer a constant source of comfort and affection, reducing stress and anxiety, and promoting a sense of well-being. This companionship can be particularly
important for individuals who may experience social isolation or feelings of loneliness.
By providing practical assistance and companionship, service dogs boost their handlers' confidence and self-esteem. They empower individuals to live fulfilling lives, participate in activities they enjoy, and engage with the world around them. This newfound confidence can lead to a greater sense of independence, self-reliance, and overall happiness.
Service dogs have a profound impact on the lives of individuals with disabilities. They are more than just animals; they are partners, companions, and advocates, helping their handlers navigate the world with confidence and independence.
The field of service dog training is constantly evolving, with ongoing research and advancements in training techniques. As technology advances, new possibilities are emerging for service dogs to assist individuals with a wider range of disabilities. The future of service dogs is promising, offering hope and support to individuals who rely on these remarkable animals for a better quality of life.

WARM rays, extreme weather and intense sweat – these form the typical summer setting.
In a country situated along the equator’s lines, Filipinos are now finding their own ways to cool down before the rainy season arrives in June.
Fortunately, a night was set to quench one’s growing thirst around the green landscape within Los Baños, Laguna.
Meister’s Uncorked, situated near the vast UP Los Baños campus, recently held its annual GinFest on April 8. The event featured the best of its signature Gin Tonic – a mixture of gin and tonic water served with its load of ice and garnish. Combined with its complimentary meal and house music, its celebration provided guests a treat for the summer.
From 10 well known gin brands from the world-over, the GinFest organizers gave each guest the freedom to enjoy and savor up to five of their preferences. One, however, was given the liberty to curate their poison of choice and garnish –choosing between lemon, orange or cucumber slices, as well as a sprig of rosemary.
GinFest organizers believe that gin tonic is the best to consume for this season’s warm and extremely humid climate.
Meister’s GinFest on April 8 was just the start – its organizers are looking forward to holding more of what they could offer inside its small haven while summer lasts.

COLLEGE graduates now are walking away from job interviews that don’t mention pay, with 44 percent admitting to ghosting recruiters when salary isn’t disclosed upfront, according to Monster’s State of the Graduate report cited by the New York Post
The trend, driven by a desire for transparency, is reshaping the hiring process. “Since so many job descriptions provide it as a common practice, when other employers don’t, graduates may simply gloss over these job listings,” said Monster career expert Vicki Salemi.
Thanks to salary transparency laws in states like New York, California, and Colorado, younger applicants are now skipping job listings without pay ranges and prioritizing roles that align with their values. Monster found nearly 75 percent of 2025 grads wouldn’t work for a company with opposing political beliefs, and a third want diverse leadership. Hybrid work is also a priority, with 42 percent saying it’s non-negotiable.
Kate Duchene, CEO of global firm RGP, told Fortune that Gen Z isn’t afraid to leave jobs if they feel unheard. “They aren’t afraid to push back,” she said.
Still, not all employers are convinced. About 60 percent of managers said they’ve let go of Gen Z hires over what they perceive as a lack of professionalism, including not replying to emails or arriving late.
But some companies are adjusting. “Today’s graduates are ambitious, intentional, and values-driven,” said Scott Blumsac Monster’s chief marketing officer. “Employers who offer flexibility, purpose, and growth will be best positioned to attract top talent.”

WHILE studying in Manila, exchange students Mila Desilve and Elizaveta Bushtak have embraced the opportunity to immerse themselves in a crosscultural learning experience and enjoy the warmth of Filipino hospitality.
Both students are enrolled at the Vatel Hotel and Tourism Business School in Europe, a global network with over 50 campuses that prepares students for successful careers in the international hospitality industry. In partnership with De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde, the Marco Polo Program offers students the chance to study abroad during their junior year, allowing Mila and Elizaveta to pursue International Hospitality Management.
Mila, from the Vatel campus on the remote island of Reunion, chose the Philippines as her destination to explore Asia and expand her hospitality skills.
“I had many options, like Thailand,
Morocco, and Spain, but I wanted to explore the Philippines. I hope to improve my hospitality skills to balance work and travel,” the 18-year-old student said.
Mila particularly enjoyed the front office and housekeeping classes, which gave her practical knowledge ahead of her internship.
Among the memorable experiences of her stay was attending an event with celebrity chef Gordon Ramsay, where she witnessed a cooking demonstration and tried halohalo
“Back home, it’s hard to have the chance to see famous people, so this was an unforgettable experience,” Mila recalled.
As a freelance model with a passion for
travel, Mila toured several parts of the Philippines, from Metro Manila’s parks to the beaches of Cebu, Bohol, and Palawan. Despite the language barrier, her professors and classmates at Benilde supported her, helping her feel integrated into the community.
“Being away from home has made me more independent and flexible,” Mila said. “I’ve learned a lot and experienced things that are different from France but interesting in the end.”
Elizaveta, from Vatel Russia, chose the Philippines to explore her curiosity and fulfill her mother’s dream of becoming a global citizen.
“I’m expanding my horizons,” she said. “I want to improve my English, gain experience, and inspire students in Moscow to come to the Philippines.”
Influenced by a family friend in Cyprus, Elizaveta decided to pursue a career in hospitality.
“He told me about the program, his internship, and how he interacted with people from all over the world,” Elizaveta explained. “At the time, I didn’t speak French or English, so his story was very inspiring.”
Elizaveta enjoyed unique courses at Benilde, such as wine appreciation, which enhanced her skills in hospitality. To experience Manila more authentically, she took a bike tour of Intramuros to explore the city’s history and culture, and visited local restaurants with new friends. She also shared her own culture with classmates by presenting a popular Russian festival, sparking interest and questions from her peers.
Elizaveta plans to pursue a master’s degree abroad and gain further knowledge of the financial and management aspects of the hospitality industry. “I want to go back to Moscow and open my own place— maybe a small restaurant,” she said.
