PNP JOINS MANHUNT VS. HARRY ROQUE

HOUSE FEARS EX-DUTERTE SPOKESMAN NOW ON THE RUN

THE Philippine National Police joined the intensified manhunt for former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque, who was declared a fugitive after being cited in contempt by the House of Representatives on Thursday.

“The PNP is now fully engaged in the manhunt for Atty. Harry Roque, and we are coordinating closely with the National Capital Region Police Office and the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group to ensure his swift apprehension,” said Santa Rosa City Rep. Dan Fernandez, co-chairperson of the House Quad Committee.

“No one is above the law, and we will not tolerate anyone defying the authority of Congress or evading accountability,” added Fernandez, who also chairs the House Committee on Public Order and Safety. Roque was cited in contempt and ordered detained at the House for refusing to submit subpoenaed documents related to his alleged involvement with illegal POGOs, including his Statements of Assets, Liabilities, and Net Worth and records connected to his family firm, Biancham Holdings, as well as a land transaction in Parañaque City.

Despite multiple summonses, Roque ignored the joint panel and refused to cooperate, leading authorities to serve the arrest order at his Makati office, where he was not found, raising concerns of deliberate evasion.

Authorities suspect Roque may be in hiding as the investigation into his alleged ties to Lucky South 99, a raided POGO hub in Porac, Pampanga, gains demned Roque’s actions, saying his blatant disregard for the House’s authority was a direct challenge to the defiance cannot be taken lightly, as it underscores the seriousness of the allegations against

him. We will pursue this matter through all available legal avenues until justice is served,” Fernandez said.

“The public deserves transparency and accountability, especially in cases involving serious financial and legal concerns. Atty. Roque’s continued evasion only raises more questions about his role in the POGO controversy,” he added.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert Ace Barbers, chairman of the Committee on Dangerous Drugs and designated head of the Quad Committee, described the evidence against Roque as “overwhelming.”

“Mr. Roque has been evasive, and his actions suggest

that he is unwilling to face accountability,” Barbers said.

He likewise rebuked Roque for previously dismissing the Quad Committee’s proceedings as a “kangaroo court.”

“If Mr. Roque believes the court is unjust, then let him face

it and prove his case. Social media pronouncements won’t justify his defiance of the law,” the lawmaker said. Roque was linked to the POGO controversy for accompanying and helping Cassandra Li Ong, an official of Whirlwind and Lucky South 99 gaming firm, to pay off arrears totaling $500,000.

He has admitted, on record, to being lawyer for Whirlwind, the company that leased its Porac compound to Lucky South 99.

MAJOR NAIA REVAMP STARTS AS SMC-LED CONSORTIUM TAKES OVER OPERATIONS

SAN MIGUEL Corp.’s New NAIA Infrastruc-

ture Corporation (NNIC) officially assumed control of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) on Saturday, with ambitious plans to modernize and transform the country’s primary international gateway into a world-class facility.

Faced with a tall order of modernizing the airport’s facade, capacity, operations, and maintenance, NNIC will now take on the task of elevating NAIA to international standards.

NNIC chairman Ramon Ang described the concession agreement as an investment for the Philippines’ future, adding that it will help the country’s economy.

“A world-class airport means more jobs, more tourists and a much stronger

and prosperous Philippines,” Ang said.

“The baton has been passed and now it is our turn in NNIC to carry it forward to the finish line,” NNIC General Manager Lito Alvarez said.

NNIC committed to spend P170 billion to execute its phased but ambitious plan to elevate NAIA to world-class standards. This includes plans to increase passenger capacity from 43 million to 62 million annually and air traffic movements from 42 to 48 per hour.

The government stands to gain about P1 trillion in revenues from the PPP project over the 25-year concession period. This includes the 82.16-percent revenue share to be remitted to the government yearly.

Travelers can expect business as usual, with flights, check-ins, and other services proceeding as normal.

Teves Jr. was nullified by the TimorLeste Supreme court – a claim that was immediately debunked by Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla as “fake news.”

“Very clearly it was stated, contrary to what the DOJ is saying, that there will be no extradition because it has been invalidated. The request of the Philippines to extradite Congressman Teves has been nullified,” Topacio said.

Remulla, however, denied Topacio’s claim.

“There is no Supreme Court in Timor-Leste,” as claimed by Topacio, the DOJ said, adding that the

highest court there is the Court of Appeals.

Remulla earlier announced that arrangements are being made with the Philippine Air Force (PAF) for the “imminent” repatriation of Teves.

“Teves is coming home very soon. And our expectation is that it will happen within the month,” Remulla said.

Teves is facing 10 counts of murder, 12 counts of frustrated murder, and four counts of attempted

THE House Quad Committee called on the National Bureau of Investigation to investigate the 2016 murder of three suspected Chinese drug lords, allegedly upon the orders of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Antipolo City Rep. Romeo Acop asked the NBI to probe the killings of Chu Kin Tung, Li Lan Yan, and Wong Meng Pin at the Davao Prison and Penal Farm (DPPF).

“May I move that the NBI should conduct an investigation and get all the pieces of evidence and documents given to this committee so that they can file the necessary charges against those people who should be charged because of this crime?” Acop said. Quad Committee co-chairman Rep. Robert Ace Barbers took note of Acop’s motion, adding that there was no objection to it. Former DPPF warden Supt. Gerardo Padilla earlier accused Duterte of ordering the killings of the three suspected Chinese drug lords. In his supplemental affidavit, Padilla confirmed the testimony of one of the hitmen, Leopoldo “Tata” Tan Jr., that Duterte gave the order and that retired police colonel and ex-PCSO general manager Royina Garma orchestrated the murders. Padilla, currently the head of the Directorate for Reformation of the Bureau of Corrections in New Bilibid Prison in Muntinlupa City, said the former President even thanked him for a “job well done” after the inmates were killed.

He said Duterte called him after Tan and Fernando “Andy” Magdadaro stabbed the three Chinese drug lords on the night of Aug. 13, 2016.

“I confirm what Tata said when we were going to the investigation section, my cell phone rang, and I answered it. The person who called me was former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and said: ‘Congratulations, Superintendent Padilla, job well done. But what was done was terrible, it was made to bleed,’” Padilla said. Surigao del Sur Rep. Johnny Pimentel, for his part, said at least four witnesses have identified Garma as the one directly giving instructions or coordinating the operation to eliminate the three Chinese nationals.

GABRIELA DEMANDS JUSTICE FOR QUIBOLOY VICTIMS, CALLS FOR PROBE ON DUTERTE

AMILITANT women’s party-list group on Saturday demanded that justice be served to the victims of Apollo  Quiboloy  and called for an investigation on ex-President Rodrigo Duterte and all other government officials and private individuals who may have aided him when he was in hiding.

In light of what she called “the recent harrowing details of Apollo  Quiboloy’s crimes,” Gabriela Rep.

Arlene Brosas registered the party’s unwavering support to the victims of his alleged abuses, especially those

who may still be living in fear and silence.

“The details about  Quiboloy’s alleged crimes are the work of someone who is pure evil. It is a grave injustice that  Quiboloy  has operated with impunity in Mindanao for decades, possibly leaving behind a trail of countless victims who have been too terrified to speak out,” Brosas said in a statement.

“Victims must be given immediate support, especially protection and legal assistance.”

The lawmaker said that  Quiboloy  must face the fullest extent of the law for the crimes he has committed against women and children.

“Quiboloy  should rot in jail.  Nor

should he be given the special treatment that is usually given to the rich and attached to the government. All those who aided and abetted his actions, including powerful figures and public officials, must be held accountable.”

Brosas called for a thorough investigation into former President Duterte’s long-standing association with  Quiboloy.

“Duterte, whose spiritual adviser is  Quiboloy, and his potential involvement in shielding him from justice must be scrutinized, especially given Duterte’s recent appointment as administrator of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ’s properties,” Brosas said.

Prior to her win, Saluta held the title of Hiyas ng Pilipinas-Continental World

2023 and was originally set to compete in the Miss Continental World 2024 pageant in Thailand.

A proponent of education and women’s empowerment, Saluta was appointed by the Hiyas ng Pilipinas organization to represent the country at Miss Elite World.

Despite a short preparation period, Saluta noted that her team made every effort to excel in the competition.

Victoria Maneiro of Venezuela won first runner-up, while Irene Grande of Spain, Sofia Gonzalez of Mexico, and Tawana Sheldrick of Indonesia rounded out the top five.

AGENTS INTERCEPT SMUGGLED DRUGS IN PASAY CITY

BUREAU of Customs (BOC) operatives foiled an attempt to smuggle high-grade marijuana and vape worth P6.8 million at the Central Mail Exchange in Pasay City. The BOC, in close collaboration with the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) and the NAIA Inter-Agency Drug Interdiction Task Group (NAIAIADITG), intercepted four parcels containing the illegal drugs.

In a statement, the BOC said it conducted a physical examination of the seized parcels and discovered   4,877 grams of kush or high-grade marijuana and seven vape cartridges containing cannabis oil. All confiscated drugs are now in the custody of PDEA while the consignees will be subjected to further investigation and facing charges of importing illegal drugs.

“Our resolve to prevent the entry of illegal drugs into the Philippines is stronger than ever. This operation highlights our unwavering commitment to safeguarding our communities,” the BOC said in a statement. Vito Barcelo

IMMIGRATION SET TO PAY OFFLOADED PASSENGERS SOON

THOUSANDS of Filipino travelers who were offloaded  by Bureau of Immigration (BI) officers without a court order can soon reimburse the travel expenses they incurred after the Department of Justice signed a guideline for the reimbursement process.

The BI said that the guidelines for reimbursing the travel expense of Filipino passengers whose travel was deferred have already been okayed by the agency.

Senate President Chiz Escudero urged BI Commissioner Joel Anthony Viado to rush the reimbursements.

It was Escudero who introduced a special provision in the 2024 General Appropriations Act that mandated the reimbursement of passengers who were left behind by their flights after being subjected to lengthy interrogation by immigration personnel for one reason or another.

The funds will be drawn from the unutilized collections of the BI that are returned to the Bureau of Treasury. In 2022, 32,404 Filipino passengers were not allowed to proceed with their flights. Out of the total, only 472 were found to be victims of human trafficking or illegal recruitment. Macon RamosAraneta

CARDIOLOGIST and 2022 vice presidential candidate  Willie  Ong  on Saturday revealed he has been diagnosed with cancer.

By August 18 or 19 this year, he suffered severe back pain, among other symptoms.

“Worst pain of my life. 10 out of 10. You will cry. It’s an entire night without sleep... The pain is like there is a knife stabbing your back repeatedly,”  Ong  said in a mix of English and Filipino.

In a video dated August 29 and posted on Saturday,  Ong, popularly known as “Doc Willie”  said he had been in the hospital for several days. He recorded the video to address his followers while he was at his strongest. Ong recalled that around April 2023, he started experiencing difficulty doing medical missions.

After successive tests, he was finally diagnosed with a rare 16-centimeter sarcoma—one of the largest his doctors had seen—in the abdomen. The tumor was hidden behind the heart and in front of the spine, blocking to various extents  Ong’s esophagus, inferior vena cava, and right atrium. Ong  said he has since been undergoing chemotherapy.

AUSSIE SHIPBUILDER EYEING TO BEEF UP PHILIPPINE COAST GUARD VESSELS

AUSTRALIAN shipbuilder Austal Philippines disclosed plans to construct military vessels that rival--if not surpass--the Chinese fleet in the West Philippine Sea.

Austal Philippines president Wayne Murray revealed ongoing discussions to develop a vessel tailored to the Coast Guard’s specific needs.

He added that the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) outlined ambitious plans for fleet expansion, and Austal Philippines aims to play a significant role in fulfilling these requirements.

While the specifics of the contract are still being defined, Austal is actively working with the Coast Guard’s tech-

nical team to determine the vessel’s range, endurance, crew requirements, and other essential features.

Austal Philippines is confident in its ability to deliver high-quality vessels, drawing upon the extensive experience of its head office in supplying water vessels to the Australian Border Force for over two decades.

Apart from traditional shipbuilding, Austal Philippines is also venturing into cutting-edge technologies, including

plans to develop a hydrogen-powered vessel.

The National Security Council (NSC) meanwhile said the Philippines is “not a pawn of the US.”

This after a Chinese military official warned that it “will never have any patience”if Washington“moves its pawns behind the scenes.”

Chinese Army Lieutenant General He Lei, in an ABS-CBN News report, said the “People’s Liberation Army will resolutely crush any foreign hostile encroachment”in the South China Sea, without naming any specific country.

NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya, quoted by the same report, said the council does not believe the Chinese official was referring to the Philippines.

“We do not feel alluded to. The Philippines is not and will never be a pawn of the United States,”Malaya told ABS-CBN News.

He also said he agrees with the Chinese army’s hope for a peaceful South China Sea, but emphasized that the Philippines will stand by its position in the West Philippine Sea, as backed by international law.

“As a sovereign nation, the Philippines will resolutely defend its territorial integrity, sovereign rights, and jurisdiction.”

The US has also publicly condemned China’s aggressive actions towards Philippine ships and aircraft in these waters, reinforcing its commitment to the security and sovereignty of its ally.

PRESIDENT MARCOS CITES POSITIVE RATING IN LATEST SWS SURVEY

PRESIDENT Ferdinand  Marcos  Jr. on Saturday acknowledged the positive results of a recent Social Weather Stations (SWS) survey.

More than half of Filipinos are satisfied with the administration, giving it a “good” +40 net satisfaction rating in June, according to the latest SWS survey.

“While we are elated by this validation of our hard work, we view it more as a challenge to do even better,” Mr.  Marcos  said in a statement.

While favorable ratings are encouraging, the President noted that his

administration remains focused on achieving the key goals that fulfill his promises to the Filipino people.

“We take the high road in our efforts, not merely to seek popularity, but to render genuine and effective service that improves our people’s lives, strengthens our nation, and secures our future,”  Mr. Marcos  said. Malacañang clarified on Saturday meanwhile that the President celebrated his birthday at a Pasay hotel, hosted by old friends, amid reports of a private concert for the occasion.

“After a tiring day filled with official engagements, he attended a party thrown by his old friends at a hotel in

Pasay, and to his surprise and appreciation, music was provided by Duran Duran,” the Presidential Communications Office said in a statement.

Pro-Duterte vlogger Sass Sassot claimed that President  Marcos  held a lavish celebration in a hotel in Pasay where British rock band Duran Duran was flown to the country to hold a private concert for the President’s birthday.

According to PCO, President  Marcos  spent his birthday much like any other day—dedicated to his official duties.

“He traveled hundreds of kilometers to grant farmers a condonation

of their debts and gifted them with a new financing program that will boost farm yields and farmers’ incomes,” PCO explained.

“He ordered the payment of the bills incurred that day by qualified patients in third-level DOH hospitals,”  he added.

The President also opened Malacañang’s gates, where food booths welcomed visitors from across the country who came to greet him.

“President  Marcos  celebrated his birthday with his signature compassion for the needy and the sick, and his deep appreciation for the farmers who feed the nation,” the Palace said.

ROMUALDEZ LAUDS ‘ZERO BILLING’ INITIATIVE PROPOSED DURING PRESIDENT’S BIRTHDAY

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G.

Romualdez on Saturday expressed strong support for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s “zerobilling” initiative, a landmark healthcare program ensuring free medical services in 22 public hospitals nationwide.

Launched on the President’s 67th birthday, September 13, this initiative represents a significant step toward making healthcare accessible to all Filipinos, according to the leader of the 300-plus-strong House of Representatives.

“The zero-billing program is a clear demonstration of the President’s unwavering commitment to the Filipino people, ensuring that no one is left behind in receiving the medical care they need,” Romualdez said.

“By covering all inpatient, outpatient, and emergency services in 22 public hospitals across the country, the President is turning

his vision of universal healthcare into reality,” he added.

On the President’s directive, the Department of Health (DOH) has allocated P328 million to fund the zero-billing initiative, covering not only hospital bills but also drugs, medicines, and essential medical services such as chemotherapy, dialysis, dental services, and laboratory procedures.

The program has been implemented in key tertiary hospitals across the National Capital Region (NCR), Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao.

Romualdez highlighted the life-changing impact of the initiative, stressing that it relieves Filipinos, especially those in vulnerable communities, from the burden of costly medical services.

“Whether it’s dialysis, chemotherapy, or emergency treatment, the government is stepping up to provide real, tangible relief to our people,” he said.

DTI CONFISCATES UNCERTIFIED ITEMS IN DAVAO

THE Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Task Force Kalasag confiscated over P17.6 million worth of uncertified products in Davao Del Sur and Davao Del Norte during a five-day enforcement operation. From September 2 to 6, the task force seized 7,441 products, primarily lead-acid batteries and tires, lacking the required Philippine Standard (PS) markings and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers.

“Consumer safety is our priority. These uncertified products pose a risk and disrupt fair competition,” said DTI acting secretary Cristina A. Roque.

The task force seized approximately 7,441 uncertified products, mainly lead-acid batteries and automotive tires, valued at over P14 million.

The confiscated products were found to be in violation of Department Administrative Order No. 02:2007, for lack of mandatory Philippine Standard (PS) markings and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) stickers, along with crucial manufacturer and product-related information.

The recent operation resulted in the issuance of notices of violation (NOVs) to 50 out of 198 monitored businesses, requiring them to provide a written explanation for their non-compliance within 48 hours. Othel V. Campos

SOLON APPEALS SUPPORT FOR BILL ON HOUSING

REP. Howard Guintu of Pinuno party-list group appealed to the Senate to support House Bill 10772 or the amended Balanced Housing Development Program, which seeks to improve the delivery of socialized housing programs. Guintu made the statement as he welcomed the bill’s passage on third and final reading.

The House led by Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez approved HB 10772 by a 178-0-0 vote. He noted that housing developers may develop an area for socialized housing equivalent to at least 15 percent of the total project area or cost for subdivisions or villages and at least five percent of condominium or vertical housing area or project cost, depending upon the developer.

Developments shall be undertaken in the project site or within the city or municipality where the development is situated, he furthered.

If the developer opts to pay 15 percent of the total subdivisions or villages project cost, or the five percent of the condominium or vertical housing project cost, the developer shall pay 25 percent to the city or municipal government where the project is located. Local government units (LGUs) shall enjoy a two-year exclusive right to utilize the amount for their own socialized housing programs.

Maricel V. Cruz DEPED CALLING FOR SUPPORT ON PRIORITY PLANS

THE Department of Education (DepEd) on Saturday encouraged its private sector partners to support the DepEd’s priority initiatives, including the preparations for the upcoming Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) next year.

DepEd Assistant Secretary for Curriculum and Teaching Janir T. Datukan shared an overview of  PISA  implemented by the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD). He also presented the general plan and activities in preparation for  PISA.

Designed and developed by the OECD,  PISA  is a periodic international comparative study that tests the ability of 15-year-old students to use their knowledge and skills in reading, mathematics, and science in realworld situations. MYANMAR JUNTA MAKES RARE REQUEST FOR FOREIGN AID TO COPE WITH FLOODS

MYANMAR’S junta chief made a rare request Saturday for foreign aid to cope with deadly floods that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people who have already endured three years of war.

Floods and landslides have killed almost 300 people in Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos and Thailand in the wake of Typhoon Yagi, which dumped a colossal deluge of rain when it hit the region last weekend.

In Myanmar, more than 235,000 people have been forced from their homes by floods, the junta said Friday, piling further misery on the

country where war has raged since the military seized power in 2021.

In Taungoo – around an hour south of the capital Naypyidaw – residents paddled makeshift rafts on floodwaters lapping around a Buddhist pagoda.

Rescuers drove a speedboat through the waters, lifting sagging electricity lines and broken tree branches with a long pole.

“I lost my rice, chickens, and ducks,” said farmer Naung Tun, who had brought his three cows to higher ground near Taungoo after floodwaters innundated his village.

“I don’t care about the other belongings. Nothing else is more important than the lives of people and animals,” he told AFP.

The rains in the wake of typhoon Yagi sent people across Southeast Asia fleeing by any means necessary, including by elephant in Myanmar and jetski in Thailand.

“Officials from the government need to contact foreign countries to receive rescue

and relief aid to be provided to the victims,” junta chief Min Aung Hlaing said on Friday, according to the Global New Light of Myanmar newspaper.

“It is necessary to manage rescue, relief and rehabilitation measures as quickly as possible,” he was quoted as saying.

Myanmar’s military has previously blocked or frustrated humanitarian assistance from abroad.

Last year it suspended travel authorisations for aid groups trying to reach around a million victims of powerful Cyclone Mocha that hit the west of the country. At the time the United Nations slammed that decision as “unfathomable.”

AFP has contacted a spokesperson for the UN in Myanmar for comment.

After cyclone Nargis killed at least 138,000 people in Myanmar in 2008, the then-junta was accused of blocking emergency aid and initially refusing to grant access to humanitarian workers and supplies. AFP

CHINA SAYS GERMAN MILITARY SHIPS IN TAIWAN STRAIT ‘INCREASE SECURITY RISKS’

CHINA on Saturday accused Berlin of heightening security risks in the Taiwan Strait, a day after two German military vessels sailed through the sensitive waters.

German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius confirmed on Friday that the frigate Baden-Wuerttemberg and the supply vessel Frankfurt am Main sailed through the strait.

“The German side’s behaviour increases security risks and sends incorrect signals,” Chinese military spokesperson Li Xi said in a statement.

US military ships as well as those operated by other countries have often sailed through the sensitive waterway.

But the Baden-Wuerttemberg’s voyage was the first time in more than two decades that Berlin’s navy had done so, according to German media reports.

Beijing views Taiwan as a renegade province and claims jurisdiction over the body of water that sepa-

rates the island from the Chinese mainland.

Germany and many other countries argue such voyages are usual, citing freedom of navigation.

China’s Li said Saturday that the People’s Liberation Army had sent sea and air forces to“monitor and warn off” the German vessels.

Beijing’s troops in the area would“resolutely counter all threats and provocations,” Li added.

The two vessels were headed from South Korea to the Philippines, German defense ministry officials said.

Pistorius said on Friday that the course charted by the vessels was “the shortest route.”

“It is the safest route given the weather conditions. And these are international waters, so we are sailing through them.”

Though Taiwan has only a dozen diplomatic allies, it maintains strong partnerships with various Western democracies such as the United States, which is its biggest weapons supplier.

Beijing has in recent years engaged in an escalating campaign of intimidation against Taiwan, including through large-scale military exercises around the island.

The Chinese government warned this year that “Taiwan independence forces will be left with their heads broken and blood flowing.”

Chinese state media reported in June that Beijing could impose the death penalty for “particularly serious”cases of what it views as separatism from Taiwan.

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz said on Friday when asked about the vessels that“there is not much to say... it’s an international waterway.”

Taiwan said earlier this week that it“welcomes and affirms Germany, along with the US, Canada and the Netherlands, for taking actions to demonstrate the legal status of the Taiwan Strait as international waters, while defending freedom of navigation and maintain

MEXICAN CARTEL INFIGHTING LEAVES 15 PEOPLE DEAD

ESCALATING fighting between factions of one of Mexico’s most violent drug cartels has left at least 15 people dead this week in a gang stronghold shaken by gunfire, abductions and arson, authorities said Friday. Security reinforcements have been sent to the northwestern state of Sinaloa – the bastion of jailed drug kingpin Joaquin“El Chapo”Guzman and his sons -- where bodies have been abandoned in the streets.

The fighting follows the dramatic arrest on US soil in July of Sinaloa Cartel co-founder Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, who claimed he had been kidnapped in Mexico and delivered into US custody against his will. Zambada, 76, was detained along with Joaquin Guzman Lopez, a son of El Chapo, who is serving a life sentence in the United States. The wave of violence in Sinaloa state capital Culiacan is believed to pit gang members loyal to El Chapo and his sons against others aligned with Zambada, who pleaded not guilty to a raft of charges in a New York court Friday.

“The rivalry stems from the events of July 25,” Sinaloa state governor Ruben Rocha Moya said. President Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador on Friday urged the warring factions to “act with a minimum of responsibility,”urging them not to“harm innocent people.”

He called on residents “to act with caution, but without alarmism,”adding: “Hopefully soon complete normality will return to Culiacan.” AFP

AUSTRALIA PM HITS BACK AT MUSK FOR ‘FASCISTS’ QUIP

AUSTRALIAN Prime Minister Anthony Albanese hit back at Elon Musk on Saturday after the tech mogul called his government “fascists” for proposing laws that would fine social media giants for spreading misinformation. Australia introduced a “combating misinformation” bill earlier this week, which includes sweeping powers to fine tech giants up to five percent of their annual turnover for breaching online safety obligations.

“Fascists,” Musk posted Thursday on his social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter.

But Albanese fired back at Musk on Saturday, saying social media “has a social responsibility”.

“If Mr Musk doesn’t understand that, that says more about him than it does about my government,” he told reporters Saturday. The exchange between Musk and Australian officials is the latest in a long-running spat with the Australian government over social media regulation.

Australia’s government is exploring a raft of new measures that would see social media companies take greater accountability for the content on their platforms -- including a ban for those under 16 years old. The country’s online watchdog took Musk’s company to court earlier this year, alleging it had failed to remove “extremely violent” videos that showed a Sydney preacher being stabbed. AFP

PERU BIDS FAREWELL TO POLARIZING EX-LEADER FUJIMORI

Social media is being flooded by digitally created “deepfake” videos using the trusted identities of famous doctors to promote dangerous miracle cures for serious health problems, experts warn. Videos on Facebook and Instagram have taken advantage of the credibility of star TV doctors to advertise untested “natural” syrups for diabetes, even claiming that the proven, first-line drug metformin “could kill” patients. These scams risk endangering lives, experts said, particularly because they deploy the likenesses of popular health experts such as British TV presenter Michael Mosley, who died earlier this year.

Artificial intelligence (AI) expert Henry Ajder said that doctor deepfakes “really took off this year.”

The AI videos typically target older audiences by faking the identity of doctors who appear regularly on daytime television, Ajder said.

Tsavings without the hassle of going to a bank. The unique barcode system adds an extra layer of privacy and security.

The BSP launched the CoDM project in June 2023 to address the artificial coin shortage in some parts of the country and promote coin recirculation.

CONSUMER PRODUCT COMPANY STEPS UP FIGHT AGAINST PLASTIC WASTE WITH A NEW GRANT OPPORTUNITY

UNILEVER is stepping up its commitment to plastic sustainability in the Philippines by launching a grant opportunity to combat plastic waste.

This is an initiative of the CIRCLE Alliance, a collaboration with USAID and EY, which aims to support innovations in plastic waste collection, processing, and recycling, particularly focusing on reducing the use of virgin plastics and finding solutions for hard-to-recycle flexible plastic packaging.

The CIRCLE Alliance seeks to accelerate the development of circular economies, thereby empowering women, improving livelihoods, and protecting the environment.

It will provide grant funding and tailored business support to scale impactful, market-based solutions, particularly focusing on small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and

entrepreneurs who may currently lack the resources to operate at the needed scale.

Unilever’s chief sustainability officer Rebecca Marmot emphasized the initiative will help “scale both new and existing solutions for packaging circularity.”

The leading consumer product manufacturer believes that the CIRCLE Alliance will have a meaningful impact, fostering emerging circular solutions and recognizing the socioeconomic importance of the plastics value chain.

CIRCLE Philippines and SEA sustainability lead Rondell Torres highlighted the growing momentum for collaborations to address plastic waste and create a fair and equitable circular economy for plastics in the region.

Enterprises can apply for the grant until October 4, 2024.

PIONEER

WO lifelong friends embarked on a remarkable journey that combined the artistic traditions of the Philippines and Indonesia. Inspired by the beauty of Indonesian batik, they began a quest to blend it with the delicate Philippine fabric Jusi.

Through perseverance and experimentation, Freddy Mercado Jr. and Thelma Victorio created Barong Batik—a stunning fusion that revolutionized both the Philippine barong and Indonesian batik. Each piece, meticulously hand-drawn by skilled artisans, is a unique work of art, a showcase of cultural collaboration and the pursuit of beauty.

Their story began in 2006, not as a grand business plan, but as an experiment rooted in curiosity and artistic passion. Mercado, an artist himself, was captivated by the intricate process of batik creation he witnessed in a bustling Indonesian mall.

“I saw an old lady doing the batik process with a kettle of hot oil, painting on a white cloth, and I immediately thought of why not on our jusi,” Mercado recalls. This sparked a quest to find batik artisans in Central Java, leading them to the heart of batik artistry in Pekalongan.

It took over a year of experimentation to perfect the process of applying batik to jusi, ensuring the colors wouldn’t bleed and the fabric would retain its elegance.

“We usually travel back and forth to Manila, and when we had the chance we brought the jusi with us to Jakarta and the artisans tried to sample the process using our fabric. It took time for the batik artisans to master the technique. After more than a year of experimentation, we brought the textile back to Manila to have it made into barong,” Victorio says.

Modernizing tradition

The Barong Batik made its debut at a Philippine Embassy reception in Jakarta in 2010. Mercado’s creation sparked immediate interest among the Filipino expat community. They were drawn to the vibrant colors and modern designs, a departure from the traditional dark hues of batik.

Mercado and Victorio both realized

that their accomplishments in the mid-2000s marked the start of a fashion revolution. Barong Batik modernized the traditional Philippine barong and Indonesian batik, creating a unique fusion of cultures that appealed to a sophisticated clientele including Indonesian and Philippine dignitaries, the Philippine expat community, government officials, businessmen, and individuals looking to make a statement. Piece of wearable art

The process begins with Philippine jusi transported to Pekalongan, where skilled batik artisans meticulously handdraw intricate patterns using the traditional wax-resist technique. Each cut takes about four to six weeks to complete for Jaab Batik and eight months for Batik Tulis.

Despite receiving offers from major retailers like SM’s Kultura and renowned barong maker Onesimus to expand the reach of Barong Batik, Mercado and Victorio opted to maintain their exclusive market positioning.

The decision stemmed from the high cost associated with both the intricate fabric and the specialized production process involved in creating these unique garments.

“What we are selling is a piece of art. Barong Batik is more than just clothing; it’s a statement of individuality and cultural appreciation. Its niche market comprises those seeking something truly special for life’s significant moments, from ballroom galas to business conferences,” Victorio says.

Global presence

While based in Jakarta, Barong Batik has expanded its reach, with showrooms in the Philippines and collaborations with prominent

“This Hall of Fame award is a validation of our mission to create meaningful marketing campaigns that not only engage our customers but also contribute to the growth and innovation of the franchising industry,” he said, noting it is the second Hall of Fame recognition for the brand.

Their commitment to quality and artistry has garnered attention from those seeking to incorporate Barong Batik into various fashion and lifestyle products.

“The product speaks for itself as it is a timeless fashion statement. Every person wants to be recognized. Donning Barong Batik truly elevates both the Philippines’ and Indonesia’s creativity to global recognition,” Mercado says.

It’s a celebration of two nations’ artistic traditions, woven together into a unique and timeless fashion statement. From its humble beginnings to its global recognition, Barong Batik represents the enduring spirit of friendship, innovation and the pursuit of beauty.

VINFAST VF 3 COMING SOON

THE VinFast VF 3, which made huge waves in Vietnam, is set to make its debut in the Philippines, marking an exciting chapter for the rapidly evolving electric vehicle (EV) market in Southeast Asia. Since its global unveiling at CES 2024, the VF 3 has captured attention as VinFast’s response to the global SUV trend, blending market insights with local expertise.

In recent years, the automotive industry has shifted towards larger vehicles, driven by higher profit margins. However, the VF 3 indicates a potential resurgence of smaller, more affordable cars, particularly in light of rising living costs and growing concerns about the environmental impact of larger vehicles. As noted by David Bailey, a business economics professor, the opportunity cost of producing smaller cars is significant, yet the VF 3 aims to redefine that narrative.

With dimensions of 3,190 x 1,679 x 1,622 mm and a wheelbase of 2,075 mm, the VF 3 is designed for urban living, making it a practical choice for city dwellers. Its operating costs, including battery rental, are expected to be lower than traditional gaspowered vehicles, which is particularly appealing in congested areas like Metro Manila.

BRILLANTES SETS NEW BENCHMARK FOR FILIPINO ENDURANCE RUNNERS

IRELAND-BASED

Rex Brillantes has achieved what many deemed impossible, setting a record of sorts in the Mount to Coast GOMU EMU World Championship held in Balatonfüred, Hungary.

On an 898.88-meter loop course, the 48-year-old from Calatrava, Negros Occidental, covered an impressive 346.457 miles (557.568 kilometers), marking the farthest distance ever run by a Filipino in an endurance race.

Competing in a grueling nonstop race that lasted 144 hours—through sweltering heat exceeding 35°C (95°F) and cold nights—Brillantes defied the odds.

The race began at noon on Sept. 5 and concluded at noon on Sept. 11.

“I came into this six-day event without a set plan. I wanted to experience it, as I hadn’t done something of this magnitude before,” said Brillantes.

Balancing a demanding job as a healthcare assistant with his training and family responsibilities is no small feat. However, with unwavering support from his wife, Jen, and their two children—both of whom are pursuing careers in medicine and psychology— Brillantes has managed to pursue his passion for running.

While many athletes rely on a support crew, Brillantes is accustomed to running solo, as his wife stays home to care for their children.

Despite this, he has consistently proven his mettle in long-distance events. In June 2024, he clinched the

title in the 12-Hour Category at the Ultramarathon National Championship in Belfast, Ireland. Brillantes’ accolades also include winning the 2022 Wexford Festival Ultra Marathon and earning a silver medal at the 303-kilometer Italian Ultra Marathon Festival in Policoro, Italy. Looking ahead, Brillantes has more endurance races planned for October and November this year. Filipino ultramarathoners are

increasingly making their mark in Europe.

Recently, three Filipino athletes— Rolando Espina, Bren Kevin Cabasa, and Eugene Evangelista— successfully completed the 222KM Ultr’Ardèche International Competition in Ardèche, France.

Out of hundreds of applicants, only 61 quali ed, and just 37 nished the demanding race within a 37-hour limit. The course

included a challenging trek to the Gerbier de Jonc summit, reaching an altitude of 3,500 meters, with participants enduring extreme temperatures.

Among the trio, Rolando Espina delivered the best nish with a time of 30 hours, 47 minutes, and 38 seconds. Espina, a seasoned ultramarathoner, previously achieved a 3rd place overall nish at the Ultramarathon Milan-Sanremo, completing the race in 36 hours and 40 minutes.

These achievements underscore the growing prominence of Filipino endurance athletes on the international stage.

WWEATHERPROOF YOUR FURRY FRIENDS WITH SPECIALIZED INSURANCE PLAN

ITH the shifting weather patterns causing health concerns for humans, pets are not immune to the effects of fluctuating temperatures. Just as people are susceptible to seasonal allergies, respiratory problems, and discomfort from sudden weather changes, pets, too, face similar challenges.

Insurtech firm Igloo, in partnership with Malayan Insurance and GCash, recently launched Pet Insure, a specialized insurance product designed to protect pets from weather-related health risks. The changing weather in tropical regions like the Philippines, where hot and humid days are often followed by sudden rain or cooler temperatures, can be particularly tough on pets. Breeds such as pugs and chow chows, for example, are more prone to respiratory issues and heat strokes, making them especially vulnerable.

Igloo’s Pet Insure offers a three-in-one insurance package that provides comprehensive coverage for unexpected pet health expenses, empowering pet owners to take better care of their furry companions. For as low as P650 per month, Pet Insure covers medical reimbursements for veterinary care of up to P100,000, ensuring that pets can receive the care they need during emergencies. Additionally, the plan includes owner’s liability coverage of up to P250,000 and personal accident cover for pet owners worth P50,000.  Available through the GCash GInsure marketplace, Pet Insure provides a financial safety net that allows dog owners to focus on keeping their pets healthy without worrying about unexpected veterinary bills. Pet owners are encouraged to take preventive steps to protect their animals during

times of fluctuating weather. Providing climate-appropriate shelter is critical—ensuring pets have warm spaces during cold spells and shaded areas during hotter days. Some breeds are particularly sensitive to extreme heat, and precautions such as limiting outdoor activity during peak temperatures can help

HOW TO PROTECT PETS DURING RAINY SEASON

WITH another typhoon causing torrential rains and rising floods across the country, one of the things pet owners should consider is the safety of their pets. Since a pet’s safety is the responsibility of its owner, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has shared a few reminders on how to keep them safe during stormy weather.

Preparation is key when it comes to disasters, so it is important to have an evacuation plan in place in case of emergencies, especially when there are threats of floods or landslides in the area. Pet owners should also have an emergency kit filled with essentials such as pet food, water, first aid supplies, and medical records.

It is also crucial that pet owners know how and where they can safely transport their pets. If carriers aren’t available, items such as laundry baskets and basins can be used as makeshift alternatives for transporting pets. While pets should never be left behind during disasters, there are cases where pet owners cannot take them while evacuating. In such situations, it is important to leave pets uncaged and un-

chained, giving them a chance to survive. PAWS has also urged the public to extend help to stray animals encountered during storms.

Whether by providing food and water, shelter, or veterinary care, any effort can help ensure animals are safer during these difficult times.

prevent heat stroke. A rule of thumb is that if it’s too hot for human feet, it’s likely too hot for a pet’s paws.

Maintaining a nutritious diet that supports a pet’s immune system is important, especially when weather-related illnesses arise. Adequate hydration prevents dehydration and heat exhaustion in hot climates, while regular grooming helps regulate body temperature. However, owners should avoid shaving pets’ fur too short to prevent sunburn. Being alert to signs of illness, like excessive scratching or rapid breathing, is crucial, especially for overheating in hot climates like ours.-

WITH the topic of animal inclusivity circulating on the internet recently, the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) has launched a Pet-Friendly Recognition Seal for establishments that are genuinely inclusive of pets in their regular operations.

The recognition seal aims to support establishments that care for pets, serving as part of the organization’s commitment to supporting causes that advocate for the safety and welfare of animals. “Animal advocates understand the power of supporting causes that reflect our shared passion for animals. One way we uphold this commitment is by supporting establishments that serve as safe havens for our pets,” the

organization said in its post announcing the recognition seal.  Notably, PAWS has recognized local pet-friendly businesses that have clear guidelines, which are a testament to their genuine care and respect for all kinds of pets. With the recognition seal, patrons of an establishment can be assured that it has passed PAWS’ evaluation process, proving that the restaurant, shop, or facility truly welcomes all kinds of companion pets. Further details regarding the recognition seal have yet to be released. However, PAWS encourages individuals to email info@paws.org.ph about any establishment they believe deserves recognition.
