CONGRESS LEADERS’ SATISFACTION RATINGS UP, VP SARA’S DOWN
By Maricel V. Cruz
THE top leaders of Congress saw their satisfaction ratings go up while that of Vice President Sara Duterte went down by 19 points, the latest survey of Social Weather Stations showed.
Senate President Francis Escudero’s net satisfaction rating stood at +47, with 64 percent of the respondents saying they were satisfied with
his performance as head of the Upper Chamber while 17 percent said they were dissatisfied.
Speaker Martin Romualdez’s satisfaction rating also rose by 16 points from +13 in March to +29 in July, with 53 percent of the respondents satisfied with his performance while 24 percent were dissatisfied.
“I am deeply humbled and encouraged by the latest Social Weather Stations survey, which shows a
significant rise in public satisfaction with my performance as Speaker of the House of Representatives,” Romualdez said in a statement.
“This progress reflects not just my leadership but the exemplary efforts of our members in driving the legislative reforms our country urgently needs. Their unwavering commitment to passing meaningful legislation in support of the Marcos administration has been crucial in
addressing the pressing issues our nation faces. From economic reforms to social justice initiatives, the work of the House has been pivotal in advancing the progress that our people are beginning to experience,” he added.
SWS released a week earlier the ratings of President Marcos, who earned a net satisfaction rating of +27 -- seven points higher than in March.

PARIS (Via PLDT Home) – President
Marcos will honor 2024 Paris Olympics gold medalist Carlos Yulo along with other Filipino Olympians at the Palace on Tuesday, August 13. Yulo, who won two gold medals in the artistic gymnastics competition in Paris, will arrive Tuesday afternoon together with the other Filipino Olympians at the Villamor Airbase. They will proceed to the Philippine International Convention Center for a welcome ceremony before going on a heroes’ parade traversing key areas in Manila and culminating at the Malacañan Palace.
The President will personally honor the athletes and present them with their incentives in recognition of their extraordinary contributions to Philippine sports.
The Philippines has already surpassed its Tokyo Olympics performance with its two golds and two bronze medals in the 2024 Paris Olympiad.
Aside from Yulo’s two gold medals, Filipina boxers Nesthy Petecio and Aira Villegas delivered two bronze medals in Paris, Meanwhile, mental health issues brought about by a “toxic environment” led to the poor performance of weightlifter Vanessa Sarno, whose Olympic debut came to a screeching halt as she failed to register a single successful lift in the snatch portion of the women’s 71kg division at the Paris Olympic Games early Saturday (Philippine time).
The 20-year-old Sarno, who was being hailed as Hidilyn Diaz’s heir apparent, had three chances to lift 100kg in the snatch, but failed in all, leading to her early ouster in the competition where she was expected to finish in the podium.
DA SETS UP CHECKPOINTS IN LUZON AMID ASF SPREAD
BORDER CONTROL TEMPORARY WHILE WAITING FOR VAX ARRIVAL
By Othel V. Campos
THE Department of Agriculture is setting up multiple livestock checkpoints across Luzon in a bid to curb the spread of African Swine Fever (ASF) in Batangas.
Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel said the checkpoints are a temporary measure while the government awaits the arrival of ASF vaccines, which could take several weeks.
He also raised concerns over unscrupulous hog traders selling diseased pigs, which he said worsened the outbreak.
“We have the funds to procure the vaccines and the emergency funds to indemnify hog raisers adversely affected by the resurgence of the ASF virus,” Tiu Laurel said.
Agriculture assistant secretary for Swine and Poultry Constante Palabrica said the additional border controls aim to prevent the movement of diseased hogs, a major contributing factor to the rapid spread of ASF in Batangas.
“We have set up additional livestock quarantines and will keep them in place at least until December 31. Policemen, along with
the Bureau of Animal Industry and other DA personnel, will staff the checkpoints,” Palabrica said.
Palabrica, a veterinary medicine expert, also noted that the border controls will help prevent the transport of other diseased animals, including birds.
The DA earlier announced that eight towns in Batangas are now affected by ASF, namely Lobo and Calatagan, which are under a state of calamity, as well as Lian, Rosario, Talisay, Lipa, Tui, and San Juan.
According to the Bureau of Animal Industry, ASF has spread across all 17 regions of the Philippines and affected 74 provinces.
As of August 8, at least 64 municipalities in 22 provinces have reported active ASF cases.
The ASF outbreak had a devastating effect on the national hog population, which significantly dropped from 12.7 million when
the viral disease started in 2019 to an estimated 9.9 million by the end of 2023.
DA spokesperson Arnel de Mesa said the agency allocated 10,000 vaccines for emergency procure ment and is distributing test kits to identify potential ASF cases.
Additionally, industrial lime will be used in depop ulation efforts to manage ASF-affected pig popu lations and prevent further spread of the virus.
The Pork Producers Federation of the Phil ippines reported that pigs in areas near Ba tangas are being sold at lower prices due to concerns over infection.
The federation warned that if the outbreak is not contained swiftly, pork prices could sig nificantly increase come the Christmas season.
“One month ago, the farmgate price was at P220 per kilo. But in areas where there is an outbreak, the going price is P2,000 per head – or about P10 per kilo for a 20-kilo sow,” ProPork chairperson Nicanor Briones said.
MARCOS VOWS TO CUT POVERTY RATE TO 9% BY 2028
By Vince Lopez
PRESIDENT Marcos vowed to lower the country’s poverty rate to nine percent in 2028 by investing in job-generating infrastructure and social protection programs.
This as the Philippines posted its highest-ever employment and historic low unemployment rates in June.
Mr. Marcos said the goal of reducing the poverty rate is already “within its reach” given that in 2023, the country’s poverty significantly dropped to 15.5 percent from 18.1 percent in 2021, translating to a
decrease of 2.45 million Filipinos living in poverty.
“[That] means we have lifted two and a half million Filipinos out of poverty and only 10.9 percent of Filipino families remain poor. Our goal is to further reduce this rate to nine percent by 2028 and improve the lives of eight million Filipinos,” he said.
“More and more of our compatriots have decent and formal jobs and have become part of the middle class. All of this is towards our goal of lifting every Filipino out of poverty and it is within our reach,” the President added.
Mr. Marcos also touted the 6.3-per cent economic growth in the second quarter, higher than the 4.3 percent dur ing the same period last year and the 5.8 percent in the first quarter of this year.
He said the government is doing eve rything to give Filipinos “decent and formal” jobs to elevate them to middle class.
“While these numbers are rosy, these mean nothing if our countrymen will not feel its effects. We will not rest on our laurels but use them to propel us forward into so cial and economic transformation,” he said.

GARIN REJECTS VP DUTERTE’S CLAIM ON ‘MISHANDLED’ DEPED FUNDS
By Maricel V. Cruz
House Deputy Majority Leader and Iloilo Rep.
Janette Garin on Saturday rejected Vice President Sara Duterte’s recent claims that the government’s budget, particularly during her time as secretary of the Department of Education (DepEd), was mishandled.
“It’s clear that DepEd has always received the largest budget. If there were problems, they likely came from a lack of direction and a poor system of implementation,” Garin said.
“Fingerpointing and blaming others will bring us nowhere. Leadership is all about being captain of the ship,” she added.
Duterte, who recently resigned as DepEd Secretary, claimed that despite her efforts to address the problem of budget mishandling
during her tenure, she received no support and witnessed no significant changes.
“If there were issues during VP Sarah’s tenure as DEPED Sec, why didn’t she raise them when she had the power to make changes?” Garin asked.
“It’s easy to claim a lack of support after the fact, but real leadership is about taking action and making a difference when it matters, not after you’ve stepped down,” Garin stressed.
Garin also stressed the impor-
tance of accountability. “DepEd had the resources, yet we saw little improvement in key areas like education quality and infrastructure.
According to Garin, oversight meetings on the DEPED budget revealed textbooks, school furnitures, learning materials, IT hardware amounting to billions, languishing for 2-3 years in various warehouses.
“If there was mismanagement, it’s time to own up to it and work on real solutions, not just criticize from the sidelines,” Garin said.
Manila 3rd District Rep. Joel Chua meanwhile said destabilization efforts against the Marcos administration must stop.
During the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Chua cited Vice President Sara Duterte’s observation that the current administration lacks a flood mitigation masterplan.
He said Duterte’s statement was “unfair and uncalled for.”
To the President’s credit, Chua said
Mr. Marcos personally checked on the effects of the Super Typhoon Carinainduced monsoon rains that resulted in massive flooding in Metro Manila.
He also praised the President for his efforts to improve the Filipinos’ lives by providing assistance and looking for ways to generate more jobs in the country.
“If you look at it, our President is doing everything. He goes around, looking for investors,” he said.
Chua said Duterte should help Marcos instead of criticizing the government’s supposed shortcomings. He added that Duterte would tarnish the country’s image if she continues to focus on attacking the Marcos administration.
“The way I see it, destabilization efforts will have a bad impact on our image because businessmen would think that our government is not stable. And to think that the ones squabbling are the President and the Vice President,” the lawmaker said.
DEPED REPORTS 89.79% STUDENT ENROLLMENT FOR SCHOOL YEAR 2024-2025
THE Department of Education (DepEd) reported that it has reached its 89.79% target for enrollees for school year 2024-2025.
The DepEd said 24,865,701 are now enrolled in the country from Elementary to Senior High School.
The DepEd further said most of the said students were enrolled in public schools, adding up to 21,610,597 students. DepEd’s target enrollees for this school year is 27,772,835.
SEVERAL committees of the House of Representatives in the 19th Congress have issued a total of 37 contempt citations to individuals. This developed as the House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez completed a 16-person detention facility that has been unveiled to hold resource persons ordered detained by the chamber in the exercise of its legislative and oversight functions.
House Secretary-General Reginald Velasco and Sergeant-at-Arms Napoleon Taas led the inauguration of the four-room facility located at the building of the Legislative Security Bureau (LSB) last Wednesday, with some House members as special guests. It was learned that total of 37 contempt citations were issued by the following committees in the 19th Congress: Public Accounts; Public Order and Safety; Human Rights; Dangerous Drugs; Franchise; Agriculture, and others. Before the unveiling of the detention facility, the chamber had no permanent structure to accommodate those cited in contempt. Now, each of the four rooms of the detention facility can accommodate four persons comfortably, said Velasco.

LAWMAKER FILES BILL ON GRASSROOTS SPORTS DEVELOPMENT IN
PH
CAMARINES Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte on Saturday appealed to the Senate to pass a bill mandating grassroots sports development. Villafuerte urged senators to expedite the passage of a matching version of a House of Representatives-approved bill advancing grassroots sports development.
He said the senators can help give grassroots sports development the premier attention that it has long deserved by passing this third and final session of the 19th Congress their version of the House-approved House Bill 8495 granting start-up funds or discount vouchers to young athletes who cannot afford paying the membership fees of local sports or recreation clubs.
He said that this bill on the proposed financial aid to young athletes will complement the measure already passed on third and final reading by both the House (HB 8468) and the Senate (Senate Bill 2514) institutionalizing a Philippine National Games or PNG program. Maricel V. Cruz HOUSE PANEL SEEKS REVIEW OF DEPED INTERVENTION PROGRAMS
DepEd Secretary Sonny Angara meanwhile met with the Department of Education-National Employees Union (DepEd-NEU) National Executive Officers and National Board of Trustees at the DepEd Central Office to discuss and address the concerns of nonteaching personnel.
Region IV-A recorded to have the biggest number of enrolled students at 3,568,529 students. Region III followed second with 2,634,823 students, while NCR placed third with 2,571,357 students.
Accompanied by DepEd NEU National President Domingo B. Alidon, Undersecretary for Finance Annalyn M. Sevilla, OIC-Undersecretary for Human Resource and Organizational Development and Administration Wilfredo E. Cabral, Undersecretary for Operations Revsee Escobedo, and other DepEd and DepEd-NEU officials, the meeting focused on the issues raised by the NEU and worked on developing resolutions to benefit the Department’s staff.

RODRIGUEZ SAYS TRANSFER OF P89.9B PHILHEALTH FUNDS
VIOLATES COUNTRY’S UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE ACT
By Maricel V. Cruz
CAGAYAN de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez is asking the House of Representatives to look into the transfer of P89.9 billion in Philhealth funds to the national treasury, saying it violated the Republic Act 11223, or the Universal Health Care Act. Rodriguez’s call is contained in Resolution 1903, which he filed last Thursday. Rodriguez said the law clearly provides that excess Philhealth funds shall be used to increase the healthcare benefits of millions of members and to reduce their monthly premium contribution.
He quoted Section 11 of RA 11223 which said: “Philhealth shall set aside a portion of its accumulated revenues not needed to meet the cost of the current year’s expenditures as reserve funds: Provided that the total amount of reserves shall not exceed a ceiling equivalent to the amount actuarially needed for two years’ projected program expenditures; Provided further that whenever actual reserves exceed the required ceiling at the end of the fiscal year, the excess of the Philhealth reserve fund shall be used to increase the program’s benefits and to decrease the amount of members’ contributions.”
the DepEd NEU’s proposal to review DepEd Order No. 002, s. 2024, which mandates the immediate removal of administrative tasks from public school teachers.
“We will track everything. I will assign HR and the Operations team to take note of all the suggestions. There are many professions involved, and I am sure we can create a career path progression. It may take time, so please bear with us, but we will study it thoroughly,” Angara said.
THE House of Representatives Committee on Basic Education and Culture has reviewed the intervention programs of the Department of Education (DepEd) for students in need of remedial classes.
The panel’s chair, Pasig Rep. Roman Romulo noted the success rates presented by DepEd are not reflected in the Programme for International Student Assessment (PISA) test results in English, Science and Mathematics.
PISA is a worldwide comparative study of secondary-level students’ performance levels in reading, mathematics, and science literacy. The Philippines joined PISA in 2018 to achieve global standards for basic education.
However, it ranked incredibly low in the test results -- 78th out of 78 countries which participated in 2018, and 77th among 81 countries in 2022.
DepEd intervention programs include the Comprehensive Rapid Literacy Assessment (CRLA) for Grades 1 to 3, and the National Learning Camp (NLC), an endof-school-year (EOSY) voluntary learning recovery program open to all students. Maricel V. Cruz

DOH OFFICIAL: HEALTH SYSTEM CAN HANDLE INFLUX OF LEPTOSPIROSIS
THE Department of Health (DOH) said the country’s health system can handle the rising number of leptospirosis cases, as the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) reaches full capacity.
DOH spokesperson Assistant Secretary Albert Domingo, in a radio interview, said the health system can “adequately handle” rising leptospirosis cases.
The DOH has also established a hotline for leptospirosis cases as it urged the public to seek medical attention should they experience symptoms.
The DOH said hotlines were launched yesterday. These include landline (02) 8531-0037; mobile number 0920-283-2758.
“That is the cellphone number that doctors and patients with
leptospirosis may contact. Just like during the COVID-19 pandemic, one can call that number to check which hospital has an available bed,” Domingo said. Reports said cases of leptospirosis at government hospitals such as the NKTI and San Lazaro Hospital have been going up.
The NKTI said that its gymnasium has been converted into a leptospirosis ward due to an influx of patients after the onslaught of Tropical Cyclone Carina-enhanced Southwest Monsoon, GMA News reported.
Nearly 70 individuals suffering from leptospirosis were admitted at the NKTI as of Friday, and the NKTI has already requested 20 more nurses and 10 more doctors from the DOH to address the lack of manpower, the report said.
“We are not lacking [in personnel]. There are many doctors and nurses. It’s just that they are in other hospitals. We need to divert patients to hospitals that are ready to receive them,” Domingo said.
The NKTI meanwhile said its emergency room (ER) and gymnasium that serves as a makeshift leptospirosis ward reached full capacity on Friday.
This comes just several days after the activation of the ward and exactly two weeks of widespread flooding caused by monsoon rains in Metro Manila.
Of the 125 patients currently at the ER, only 66 are in beds and the rest are
being given medical attention while on wheelchairs or monoblock stools, ABS-CBN News reported.
NKTI’s Deputy Executive Director for Medical Services Romina Danguilan, quoted by ABS-CBN News, said while they are used to treating patients with leptospirosis, they observe cases to be more severe this year.
“The patients require dialysis. They also have pancreatitis, hepatitis, and liver function abnormalities. Some have severe lung damage while others have complications with their lungs requiring intubation and respirators,” Danguilan said.
The NKTI said it has no problems with adding more beds but stressed the need for additional manpower to be able to attend to the patient’s needs more effectively.
Reports said the Philippine Red Cross and the Bicol Sanitarium heeded their call and sent medical personnel.
DBM RELEASES P5B FOR 4PS TO HELP REINSTATE 700K REVALIDATED PROGRAM GRANTEES
By Maricel V. Cruz
THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) can now pay the cash grants of more than 700,000 reinstated household beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) following the release of an extra P5 billion program fund by the Department of Budget and Management (DBM).
DSWD Asst. Secretary Irene Dumlao, who is also the agency spokesperson, also said that the department requested an additional budget from the DBM to fund last year’s 4Ps beneficiaries whose grants were temporarily put on hold following the household
AFP
reassessment using the Social Welfare and Development Indicator (SWDI) Tool.
The additional funds mostly cover the education grants for the reinstated households, according to the DSWD spokesperson.
“We have requested to give the cash grants of our beneficiaries whose grants were held when we did the revalidation. If you remember, in 2022, the results of Listahanan 3 came out. And we saw that there are 4Ps beneficiaries based on Listahanan 3 [are] no longer considered as poor. But, because Listahanan 3 was conducted in 2019 and the pandemic passed in 2020 and 2021, it was seen that there
are 4Ps beneficiaries who were also affected by the pandemic and this has affected their level of well-being When the result of the Listahanan 3 came out, the DSWD received numerous requests for reconsideration prompting the agency to conduct a revalidation using the SWDI tool,” the official said.
The SWDI assessment is now being used as the basis for the exit of the 4Ps household beneficiaries from the program under the National Advisory Council (NAC) Resolution No. 1 series of 2023 and was operationalized by the DSWD through the issuance of Memorandum Circular 19 series of 2023.
Based on the set of indicators in terms of economic sufficiency and
social adequacy, households are categorized under three levels: level 1-survival, level 2-subsistence, and level 3-self sufficient. The result of the tool aids the program in identifying interventions needed by the family in order to achieve self-sufficiency.
“While we were doing that [revalidation], naka-hold po ang release ng kanilang cash grants. But, after determining na marami pa rin ang mga 4Ps beneficiaries na dapat mapasama o manatili sa programa dahil bumaba ang kanilang level of well-being, kinakailangan po ibigay natin ang kanilang cash grants that were previously put on hold,” the DSWD spokesperson pointed out.
MANEUVER OF CHINESE AIRCRAFT OVER BAJO DE MASINLOC
By Rex Espiritu
THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Saturday condemned the “dangerous and provocative actions” of Beijing’s People’s Liberation Army Air Force (PLAAF) that endangered the lives of Philippine Air Force (PAF) personnel undertaking maritime security operations within Manila’s maritime zones.
AFP Chief General Romeo Brawner Jr. said that on the early morning of August 8, a PAF NC-212i aircraft was conducting a routine maritime patrol over Bajo de Masinloc in West Philippine Sea when two aircraft from the PLAAF executed a dangerous maneuver and dropped flares in the path of PAF’s NC-212i.
“The incident posed a threat to Philippine Air Force aircraft and its crew, interfered with lawful flight operations in airspace within Philippine sovereignty and jurisdiction, and contravened international law and regulations governing safety of aviation. “ Brawner said.
Brawner said that the pilots and crew of the NC-212i safely returned to Clark Air Base at 10:00AM that day.“All personnel on board were unharmed.” He added.
The AFP has reported the incident to the Department of Foreign Affairs and relevant government agencies.
A Chinese research vessel has been spotted in the resource-rich Recto Bank (Reed Bank), a independent monitor said on Friday.

AT LEAST 90 KILLED IN ISRAEL SCHOOL STRIKE
GAZA’S civil defense agency said Saturday the death toll from the latest Israeli strike on a school housing displaced Palestinians had risen to more than 90, as Israel’s military said it struck a militants’ command centre.
AFP could not independently verify the toll which, if confirmed, would appear to be one of the largest from a single strike during 10 months of war in Gaza between Israel and Hamas Palestinian militants.
“The death toll is now between 90 to 100 and there are dozens more wounded. Three Israeli rockets hit the school that was housing displaced Palestinians,” agency spokesman Mahmud Bassal told AFP.
The government media office in Hamas-ruled Gaza said the strike
killed more than 100 people.
With most of Gaza’s 2.4 million people displaced during the war started by Hamas’s October 7 attack on southern Israel, many have sought refuge in school buildings.
Saturday’s incident brings to at least 14 the number of schools struck in Gaza since July 6, killing more than 280 according to an AFP tally of tolls previously given by officials in the territory.
AFPTV live images from the scene showed a large complex with a courtyard where debris lay inside and out. Part of the structure
appeared to be a mosque, the upper story of which was partially blown out and charred.
Images showed white-shrouded bodies, blood stains on the ground, and smoke rising from the rubble.
Israel’s military said it struck a Hamas “command and control centre” that was “embedded” in Al-Tabieen school in the Daraj neighbourhood.
“Numerous steps were taken to mitigate the risk of harming civilians, including the use of precise munitions, aerial surveillance, and intelligence information,” a statement said.
The military has repeatedly made similar accusations after strikes on school shelters. Hamas has previously denied Israeli claims that it uses schools, hospitals and other civilian facilities for military aims.
The Islamic Jihad, a militant group fighting alongside Hamas, said the strike took place “during the dawn prayer.”

MODESTY THE AIM FOR TURKEY’S OLYMPIC SHOOTING SENSATION
YUSUF Dikec may have an Olympic medal and a legion of adoring online fans, but the Turkish pistol sharpshooter is aiming to keep his feet on the ground.
DESPAIR. A man cries over the shrouded corpse of a child killed in an overnight Israeli strike in the yard of the Al-Aqsa Martyrs hospital in Deir el-Balah in the central Gaza Strip on August 10, 2024 amid the ongoing conflict between Israel and the Palestinian Hamas movement. AFP
Shots of the athlete cocking his pistol with nonchalance, his silver medal in Paris earned with his off hand in his pocket and no protective glasses or headphones, went viral around the world.
But in spite of his newfound internet fame, Dikec insisted that he was “the same man.”
“The day after our silver medal, everyone was talking to me about the number of times my photos were shared on social networks,” Dikec told AFP.
“But it doesn’t matter to me. I’ll continue my life as before,” he said, speaking at the complex in the Turkish capital Ankara where he trains. The master marksman’s relaxed pose, widely imitated by his fellow athletes, has become associated with victory with many of his Olympic peers.
Even Elon Musk, the billionaire founder of Tesla and SpaceX, has shared a video of himself striking the stance, viewed 170 million times.
Dikec’s self-confidence and sangfroid have inspired a flood of online memes. AFP
of the Gaza government media office, told AFP that the strike “resulted in more than 100 martyrs and dozens of injuries, most of which are in severe and critical condition.”
Gaza government media sources said the school was housing around 250 people, about half of them women and children.
On Thursday, the civil defense agency said Israeli strikes hit two schools in Gaza City, killing more than 18 people. That came after two other schools were hit last Sunday in the city, with at least 30 dead, according to the agency.
The Israeli military said it struck Hamas command centres in both instances.
Israel has vowed to destroy Hamas and in January the military said it had dismantled the group’s command structure in northern Gaza. But the military has since found itself returning there and to other areas of the territory to battle militants again. AFP

TAKES RALLY BLITZ TO ARIZONA AS TRUMP HOLDS FIRST IN A WEEK
KAMALA Harris took her rapid tour of battleground states to Arizona on Friday, where she hammered opponent Donald Trump on his favorite issue of immigration, as the Republican used his only rally of the week to boost a Senate candidate.
With the presidential election day just three months away, Trump’s light schedule – a rally every four or five days – contrasts with the hectic program of an opponent almost 20 years his junior, and with his own vigorous campaigning in 2016.
The 78-year-old former president has held just five rallies since the Republican National Convention concluded in midJuly, one fewer than Harris is staging this week alone. He has not announced any events for next week.
After stops in Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, Harris spoke to a packed stadium in Arizona, a racially diverse state along the US
border with Mexico that President Joe Biden narrowly won in 2020 by around 10,000 votes.
While mostly hewing to the script she has used throughout the week, Harris sharpened her attack on Trump’s immigration record.
“Donald Trump does not want to fix this problem. Be clear about that,” Harris said.
“He talks a big game about border security, but he does not walk the walk.”
She cited a major immigration proposal that appeared set to pass Congress after long bipartisan negotiations, but which failed after Trump, wary of giving Biden a legislative win, came out against it early this year.
“Trump tanked the deal because he thought by doing that it would help him win an election. But when I am president, I will sign the bill,” Harris said to cheers.
ing papers – if thoroughly checked and disclosed.
But that was not the case for several recent cases that somehow snuck past peer review.
Earlier this year, a clearly AI-generated graphic of a rat with impossibly huge genitals was shared widely on social media.
It was published in a journal of academic giant Frontiers, which later
retracted the study.

12 INMATES KILLED IN TWIN JAILBREAKS IN BANGLADESH
TWIN jailbreaks in Bangladesh killed at least 12 inmates and freed hundreds more in the chaotic days after the ouster of autocratic premier Sheikh Hasina, officials told AFP Saturday. An interim government is struggling to restore law and order with police going on strike after Hasina’s sudden resignation and flight abroad after 15 years in power.
This week’s prison escapes, both north of the capital Dhaka, are the latest in a series of breakouts during weeks of nationwide unrest leading up to her toppling.
Six convicts were killed at Jamapur Prison on Thursday after prison guards were assaulted by escapees, warden Abu Fatah told AFP.
“They attacked us with iron rods and sharp weapons. They torched my office. Then tried to break out and take all 600 prisoners with them,” he said.
“We were forced to open fire. At least six inmates were killed including one who was stabbed to death.”
Fatah said guards managed to quell the attack before anyone escaped. On Tuesday another six prisoners were shot dead during a mass breakout at a high security prison in Kashimpur, just 30 kilometers (20 miles) north of Dhaka, warden Lutfor Rahman told AFP.
Rahman said the inmates used iron tools and rebar rods to attack guards and broke through the jail’s main gate, forcing army soldiers and jail guards to open fire. AFP
JAPANESE URGED NOT TO PANIC-BUY AMID MEGAQUAKE FEARS
AUTHORITIES in Japan urged people to avoid hoarding as anxiety over a possible megaquake triggered a spike Saturday in demand for disaster kits and daily necessities. In its first such advisory, the weather agency said a huge earthquake was more likely in the aftermath of a magnitude 7.1 jolt in the south on Thursday which left 14 people injured.
At a Tokyo supermarket on Saturday, a sign was put up apologizing to customers for shortages of certain products it attributed to “quakerelated media reports.”
“Potential sales restrictions are on the way,”the sign said, adding bottled water was already being rationed due to “unstable” procurement. On Saturday morning the website of Japanese e-commerce giant Rakuten showed portable toilets, preserved food and bottled water topping the list of the most soughtafter items.
Some retailers along the Pacific coastline also reported similar disaster-related supplies in high demand, according to local media reports.
The advisory concerns the Nankai Trough “subduction zone” between two tectonic plates in the Pacific Ocean, where massive earthquakes have hit in the past. AFP

LANDBANK PAVES FARMERS’ ROAD TO SUCCESS
IN 1992, rice farmer Ricardo Buenaventura, struggling with limited capital, united with 15 fellow farmers to form the Nagkakaisang Magsasaka Agricultural Primary Multi-Purpose Cooperative (PMPC). Their goal is to overcome financial barriers and boost their production.
Land Bank of the Philippines (recognized their potential and granted them their first loan of P120,000.00. This initial trust marked the beginning of a transformative partnership.
“LandBank believed in us even when our cooperative was
just starting. They gave us the opportunity to strengthen our cooperative and improve our livelihood,” Buenaventura said.
LandBank’s support steadily grew, with total loans to the cooperative reaching P1 billion. The cooperative used the funds
to expand into diverse ventures, including re-lending to members, agricultural trading and infrastructure development like warehouses and an onion cold storage facility.
From its humble beginnings, Nagkakaisang Magsasaka Agricultural PMPC has grown to 1,500 members, encompassing not only rice and onion farmers but also poultry, livestock raisers and microentrepreneurs like sari-sari store owners.
Through the partnership, the cooperative now provides comprehensive support to its members, covering the entire rice production cycle.
Now, we are also helping onion farmers here in Nueva Ecija strengthen their production,” Buenaventura said.
LandBank president and chief executive Lynette Ortiz reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to empowering agricultural cooperatives, recognizing their pivotal role in providing small farmers with essential resources for growth.
They purchase their members’ produce at fair prices, process it under their own rice brand and distribute it to consumers across the country. The co-op has also ventured into onion cold storage, reducing postharvest losses for onion farmers and stabilizing the local onion value chain.
Buenaventura said the co-op’s diversification ably addresses the needs of its members and enhances the agricultural sector. LandBank’s support has been instrumental to their success story, he said.
The cooperative’s growth has not only benefited its members but also contributed to increased productivity and food security in the region.
“With LandBank’s help, our cooperative has achieved so much and has helped many rice farmers.

VINFAST PROVIDES UNIQUE OPTIONS TO OWN A VF 5 EV PURCHASE… OR SUBSCRIPTION?
THE Philippine automotive market is evolving, and the introduction of the VinFast VF 5 has brought a new level of flexibility for consumers interested in electric vehicles (EVs). Unlike the traditional car-buying process, VinFast offers customers a choice between purchasing the VF 5 with the battery included or subscribing to the battery separately. Understanding the benefits and drawbacks of each option can help buyers determine the best fit for their needs.
Traditionally, buying a car has been a straightforward affair – select the desired model, take it for a test drive, and then choose between paying upfront or in installments. However, VinFast’s battery subscription program has added a new dynamic to the equation, allowing customers to tailor their purchase experience.
The VF 5 compact electric SUV is VinFast’s latest offering in the local market. While the car with the battery included is priced at Php 1,191,000, the subscription model lowers the cost to Php 992,000 – a significant 16% reduction. This subscription-based approach is appealing to new EV adopters who may be concerned about battery degradation, as VinFast takes responsibility for the battery’s life cycle and provides a replacement guarantee if capacity drops below 70%. This can ease the minds of those unfamiliar with electric vehicles and help maintain the car’s resale value.
On the other hand, the traditional purchase option, where the battery is included in the price, may be preferred by those who dislike subscription-based services. This model eliminates recurring monthly fees and, when combined with home charging, can significantly reduce daily operating costs. Additionally, after about three years, the total cost of ownership for both options could potentially even out, with the possibility of further savings over time for those who bought the battery upfront. When comparing the VF 5’s battery subscription plan to a similar gasolinepowered car in the same segment, the electric option demonstrates its financial advantages. Assuming a monthly travel distance of 1,500 km, the monthly fuel expense for a gasolinepowered car would be around Php 6,460, while the VF 5’s monthly energy cost with the battery included would be just Php 1,973. Even with the battery subscription plan, the total monthly cost of Php 7,773 is still lower than the gasoline-powered alternative. Ultimately, the choice between buying the VF 5 with the battery included or opting for the subscription plan depends on individual driving habits and preferences. The battery subscription model may be more appealing to new EV adopters or high-mileage drivers, while those who drive less frequently or prefer the traditional ownership experience may benefit more from purchasing the car with the battery included.

SEES MORE TRIUMPHS FOR PH ATHLETES
By Riera U. Mallari
PARIS (Via PLDT
Home)— The Philippines has already surpassed its 2020 Tokyo Olympics achievement, but Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann believes the Filipino athlete, now a dominant force on the international stage, will continue to conquer new heights in future Olympiads.
“Our journey continues as we strive for even greater victories. These achievements have inspired millions and united us as a nation,” said Bachmann. “Congratulations to everyone, especially our athletes! We assure you of the Filipino people’s continued support as you build a lasting legacy for Philippine sports.”
After 97 years of a goldless campaign in the games, the Philippines ended the heartbreak with Hidilyn Diaz’s golden show in the 55kg competitions of the Tokyo games three years ago.
What followed suit was the amazing breakthrough of the boxers – Nesthy Petecio and Carlo Paalam matching the 1996 Atlanta Olympics silver medal of Onyok Velasco and 1964 Tokyo runner-up Anthony Villanueva, with Eumir Marcial adding a bronze to the country’s Japan 2021 haul.
It was a transcendent feat by the Philippines, that was even surpassed by its Paris batch with the double-gold harvest of gymnast Carlos Yulo and the back-to-back bronze-medal exploits of boxers Aira Villegas and Petecio.
“While this year’s medal
count surpasses Tokyo 2020, the consistent success of the Philippines in the Olympics is even more remarkable,” Bachmann said.
“With Aira Villegas and Nesthy Petecio recently clinching bronze medals, we’ve solidi ed these new milestones for our country,” said Bachmann, who is now busy preparing for the heroes’ welcome for the latest batch of Olympic legends.
Yulo, whose breathtaking performances captivated audiences, including several NBA stars, will depart Paris on Monday along with Petecio and Villegas.
The Philippine delegation, led by Philippine Olympic Committee President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino, will take a chartered ight from Dubai and arrive in Manila on Tuesday afternoon.
“The Olympics is still ongoing, with our weightlifter and golfers yet to compete,” Bachmann said after golfer Bianca Pagdanganan staged another remarkable comeback that put her in contention for a podium nish.
Bachmann also acknowledged the unwavering support from
all sectors that contributed to the Philippines’ best-ever Olympic performance in its centennial year of participation.

PERPETUAL HELP ALTAS TO GO FULL THROTTLE IN NCAA’S CENTENNIAL SEASON
By Dennis Abrina
A MONTH before the centennial season of the country’s oldest collegiate league tips o , the Perpetual Altas have finalized their 20-man roster, anchored by returning players from last year’s men’s basketball team, namely Christian Pagaran, John Cedrick Abis, John Paul Boral, Angelo Gelsano, Jearico Nuñez, Shawn Orgo, Richard Movida, and Nathaniel Sevilla. This strong core will lead the team into the NCAA Season 100, which unfurls on Sept. 7 at the Mall of Asia Arena in Pasay City, hosted by the Lyceum of the Philippines University Pirates.
New head coach Olsen Racela aims for an early peak performance.
“We’re getting there,” he said. “They’re improving with every game.
Hopefully, we’ll hit our stride at the right time.”
The team is still evaluating a shortlist of rookies -- Bryle Mascariñas, Justine Kyle Thompson, Eman Pizarro, Axl Manuel, Brix Manuel, Mark Danag, Iñigo Montemayor, Regie Ayon, Axel Javier, Ralph Cauguiran, and Mark Gojo Cruz.
Racela expects significant contributions from NCAA Season 99 (Junior’s Division) Rookie of the Year, Mark Gojo Cruz.
“He’ll be part of the rotation,” the coach said. “Many of the rookies didn’t play last year, so we’ll integrate them immediately. We lost nine players to graduation and professional careers, including Jielo Razon, Jasper Cuevas, and Rey Joey Barcuma.”
Gojo Cruz, who averaged 15 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists in his junior
year, expressed his determination.
“Coach O helped me identify my weaknesses during the o season, and I’m working hard to contribute to the team, even as a rookie,” he said. “His con dence in me has boosted my own, and I’m ready to play like a veteran.”
Racela hopes the young players will mature quickly and help the team this season.
“I’m taking it one game at a time,” he admitted, acknowledging the team’s signi cant losses.
Racela, an assistant coach for Barangay Ginebra, will be assisted by Richard Del Rosario, Jam Lipae, Joph Cleopas, and Gerald Dizon.
“I want this team to compete ercely in every possession and every game,” Racela said. “We’re underdogs, but that won’t stop us from competing now and in the future.”
we can con dently say that the overall performance re ects everyone’s dedication and passion to inspire Filipinos and expand the sport’s reach,” Bachmann added.
FRANCE TO FETE OLYMPIANS ON CHAMPS ELYSEES
FRENCH President Emmanuel Macron on Friday said his country would applaud its Olympians on one of the capital’s most prestigious thoroughfares next month.
“September 14, 2024. The Champs Elysees Avenue. Be there to celebrate our athletes,” he wrote on X.
As of Thursday, France had won the fourth most gold medals at the Games ending on Sunday, nabbing 14 top prizes behind the United States, China, and Australia.
Four of those individual medals belong to a single athlete, 22-year-old swimmer Leon Marchand, who has sparked “Marchand Mania” across France.
Judoka Teddy Riner, 35, has won two gold medals—one in the Men’s +100kg and the other as part of the mixed team event.
Macron has called for an Olympic truce in France for the duration of the Games, as its various political parties bicker over who could head a new government.
The president took the gamble of calling for snap elections just before the Games after the far-right beat his centrist alliance in European elections.
After center and left parties pulled together against the far right in the second round, a left-wing alliance won most seats but no working majority in parliament.
Macron has largely opted to take a back seat during the Games, vacationing at his Mediterranean holiday residence, but he did make the trip to see Riner win gold in Paris on August 2. AFP
Team captain Christian Pagaran is determined to lead the Altas to their rstever men’s basketball championship.
“I’ve prepared myself to be a leader and role model,” he said. “I’ll contribute on both ends of the oor and aim for a strong nish to my playing career.”

DECLAWING IS BAD FOR YOUR CAT
By Mariana Burgos
CAT declawing, a procedure still performed in various parts of the world, involves the amputation of the last bone of each toe on a cat’s paw. This is akin to cutting off a human finger at the last knuckle, a comparison that underscores the severity of the procedure.
The Humane Society Veterinary Medical Association (HSVMA), in their article "Why Declawing is Bad for Your Cat," says the standard method involves using a scalpel or guillotine clipper, followed by stitching or surgical glue to close the wounds. A more modern technique uses laser surgery, where a concentrated light beam cuts through tissue.
Both methods, however, can lead to lasting physical and behavioral problems for cats, including increased odds of back pain, litter box aversion, and biting.
Declawing is not just a simple nail removal but a significant surgical procedure with profound implications. The article mentions that the procedure is banned or considered unethical in numerous countries. In the United States, specific states and cities have also implemented bans. The Humane Society of the United States, along with the HSVMA, opposes
declawing unless it is medically necessary, such as for the removal of cancerous nail bed tumors. These stances highlight the widespread recognition of the procedure's adverse effects on cats' health and well-being.
The Tendonectomy Alternative
Another procedure mentioned in the article is a tendonectomy, which involves severing the tendon that controls the claw in each toe. This procedure allows cats to retain their claws but prevents them from extending them to scratch. The HSVMA notes that tendonectomies often lead to complications such as abnormally thick claw growth, necessitating frequent and challenging nail trims. This can result in the cat's claws snagging on various surfaces or even growing into their paw pads. Moreover, the incidence of bleeding, lameness, and infection is similar between
tendonectomy and declawing, according to a study published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in 1998.
The Consequences of Declawing
Declawing can lead to numerous health problems for cats. The article explains that removing claws alters how a cat's feet meet the ground, often causing chronic pain similar to wearing an ill-fitting pair of shoes. Additionally, improperly removed claws can regrow, potentially causing nerve damage and bone spurs. The HSVMA tells us that these complications underscore the invasive nature of the surgery and its potential for causing long-term suffering.
Behavioral issues also arise from declawing. For instance, shredded newspaper is typically used in litter boxes post-surgery to avoid irritating the sensitive paws. This unfamiliar material, coupled with the pain of scratch-
ing, can lead cats to avoid using the litter box altogether.
HSVMA claims some cats may also become more prone to biting, as they no longer have their claws for defense and may be in constant pain. This behavioral change can be particularly distressing for cat owners and highlights the significant impact of the procedure on a cat's quality of life.
Advocating Against Declawing Veterinarians and animal welfare organizations are increasingly advocating against declawing. Dr. Christine Schelling, who once witnessed a cat's extreme pain post-declawing, has since become a vocal opponent of the procedure. She founded declawing.com, a website dedicated to educating cat owners about the realities of this often-misunderstood surgery. HSVMA says this advocacy reflects a growing movement within the veterinary community to protect cats from unnecessary and harmful procedures.
Understanding Cat Scratching Behavior
To address concerns about cat scratching, it is essential to understand that scratching is a normal and vital behavior for cats. As noted by veterinarian Susan Krebsbach with the HSVMA, scratching helps cats stretch their muscles, shed the outer nail sheath from their claws, and mark their territory. This behavior is an instinctive need and a sign of a happy and healthy cat. Cat behaviorist Matt Wildman emphasizes that cats do not scratch to cause damage or misbehave; rather, they are simply meeting their natural needs. Therefore, providing appropriate outlets for scratching is crucial for cat owners, HSVMA tells us. (To be continued)
THE IMPORTANCE OF PROTEIN IN A DOG’S DIET
By Niko Gabriel Salgado
PROTEIN is an essential nutrient for all living beings as it plays an important role in the maintenance and repair of tissues, the production of enzymes and hormones, and the overall health of the body. For dogs, protein is particularly important as it supports numerous physiological functions that are vital for their well-being.
“Protein is a cornerstone of canine nutrition, offering a wide array of benefits. From muscle development and immune support to skin health and energy production, protein is essential for maintaining optimal physiological function,” said Dr. Anna Grace Davis in “The Importance of Protein in Dogs” published in the Web MD website.
“By providing a diet rich in high-quality protein, dog owners can ensure that their furry companions enjoy a long, healthy, and vibrant life,” Davis added.
Muscle Development and
the building blocks of muscle tissue. Puppies require higher amounts of protein to support their rapid growth and muscle development. As dogs age, maintaining muscle mass is important to prevent muscle atrophy and to support overall mobility and strength. Proper protein intake ensures that dogs have the necessary resources to build and repair muscle tissues, promoting healthy growth in young dogs and sustaining muscle in adult and senior dogs.
Immune System Support
“Protein is vital for a healthy immune system. The body's immune response relies on the production of antibodies, which are proteins that identify and neutralize foreign invaders such as bacteria and viruses,” Davis said.
A diet rich in high-quality protein ensures that a dog's body can produce sufficient antibodies to fight off infections and diseases. Moreover, proteins are involved in the production of white blood
Skin and Coat Health
A dog's skin and coat are indicators of their overall health, and protein plays a significant role in maintaining both. Keratin, a type of protein, is a key component of hair, nails, and the outer layer of the skin. Proper protein intake promotes the production of keratin, leading to a shiny, healthy coat and strong, resilient nails. Protein also supports the production of collagen and elastin, which are essential for maintaining skin elasticity and strength. Dogs that receive sufficient protein in their diet are less likely to suffer from skin conditions such as dryness, itching, and infections.
Energy and Vitality
Protein is not only a building block for tissues but also a source of energy. While carbohydrates and fats are primary energy sources, proteins can be broken down to provide energy, especially when a dog's carbohydrate intake is insufficient. Active and working dogs, in particular, benefit from a diet that includes a higher protein content to meet their increased energy demands. Protein-rich diets help maintain energy levels, support endurance, and enhance overall vitality, enabling dogs to engage more in physical activities.
Digestive Health
Proteins play a critical role in maintaining a healthy digestive system. Enzymes, which are proteins, are necessary for the digestion and absorption of nutrients. Adequate protein intake ensures the production of digestive enzymes that break down food into absorbable components. Proteins contribute to the health of the gastrointestinal lining, promoting the integrity and function of the digestive tract. Dogs with sufficient protein in their diet are less likely to experience digestive issues such as diarrhea and malabsorption, ensuring that they can efficiently utilize the nutrients in their food.
Hormone Regulation
Proteins are involved in the production and regulation of hormones, which are essential for various bodily functions. Hormones such
as insulin, glucagon, and thyroid hormones are proteins that regulate metabolism, blood sugar levels, and overall energy balance. A diet rich in high-quality protein supports the synthesis and function of these hormones, contributing to the overall metabolic health of dogs. Proper hormone regulation is crucial in maintaining a healthy weight, energy levels, and overall well-being.
Longevity and Quality of Life
“A diet that includes proper protein contributes to the longevity and quality of life for dogs. By supporting muscle maintenance, immune function, skin and coat health, energy levels, digestive health, and hormone regulation, protein plays a comprehensive role in promoting overall health,” noted Davis. Dogs that receive the right amount of protein are more likely to lead active, healthy lives and are better equipped to resist diseases and recover from illnesses.
Choosing the Right Protein Source
To maximize the benefits of protein in a dog's diet, it is important to choose highquality protein sources. Animal-based
proteins such as chicken, beef, fish, and eggs are highly digestible and provide all essential amino acids. Plant-based proteins, such as those found in legumes and grains, can also contribute to a dog's protein intake but should be balanced to ensure a complete amino acid profile. Consulting with a veterinarian can help determine the appropriate protein sources and amounts based on a dog's age, size, activity level, and health status. Protein is a cornerstone of canine nutrition, offering a wide array of benefits that support a dog's health and well-being. From muscle development and immune support to skin health and energy production, protein is essential for maintaining optimal physiological functions. By providing a diet rich in high-quality protein, dog owners can ensure that their furry companions enjoy a long, healthy, and vibrant life.

\“Back in 2020, I wasn’t confident. I knew I could perform well, but I felt stuck. Now, I’m more open to the world,” Caloy says in the video.
\“I knew I wanted to be an Olympian when I was 12, watching Kohei Uchimura from Japan at the 2012 London Olympics. His moves were amazing and looked so easy, even though they were difficult. That’s why I wanted to compete,” the 24-year-old gymnast continues.
Caloy likens gymnastics to ballet, emphasizing the need for grace and precision. He believes it’s his true calling.

THE rising P-pop girl group G22, featuring members AJ, Alfea, and Jaz, has made significant strides since its debut in 2022.
Starting with their debut single “BANG!” and now becoming Acer’s newest brand ambassadors, the members of the girl group under Cornerstone Entertainment have experienced both highs and lows in their journey.
In a media conference after their performance at the Acer Day 2024 concert, the girls of G22 shared insights into their experiences as idols committed to pursuing their dreams.
“I think all [P-pop] groups experience struggles because, of course, it’s really hard,” said AJ, further sharing that while P-pop was steadily rising and thriving, the group couldn’t help but be doubtful of what the future had in store for them.
“There were times when we would think, ‘Is it worth it? Are we on the right path?’” AJ admitted.
Despite their doubts, the group was still adamant in giving their best in all of their performances. This determination in performing was what drove Acer to have them join their roster of brand ambassadors such as P-pop boy band SB19 and K-pop girl group 2NE1 member Sandara Park
As brand ambassadors, G22 was a part of Acer’s #AcerU2024 Campus Bus campaign which had them perform in several malls in Metro Manila last July alongside SB19. Apart from this, they were also able to be a part of the recently concluded Acer Day 2024 concert where they got the chance to share the stage with
“I’m really good at gymnastics, and I feel like it’s where I belong,” he says.
Caloy elaborates on the challenges: “Every gymnast has their own routine. If something becomes too difficult or stressful, I stop. It’s important to manage stress to maintain performance.”
He finds the floor exercise particularly demanding: “Even if you think you’ve got it, it can still be tricky. Vault requires perfect timing, strength, and a solid landing. I focus on this, but it’s not as hard as the floor or rings.”
Caloy reveals his favorites: “The floor exercise and vault are my top events. After those, I enjoy the T-bar, followed by the rings, and lastly, the pommel horse.”
Caloy wants more people to try gymnastics and see how enjoyable it can be.
“Even if they don’t become professionals, I want them to try gymnastics. You always learn from losses or mistakes. In
sports, you’ll face many challenges, but persistence is key. Your time to shine will come,” he concludes.
The second episode aired on July 19. It features boxers like Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Marcial In this episode, they discuss how boxing helped them rise from modest beginnings.
The third episode highlights weightlifters Vanessa Sarno, Elreen Ando, and John

SB19 and Sandara Park.
The group shared how their performance during the concert last Aug 4 was memorable as they also got the chance to perform not only their songs but also Park’s song “In or Out” together with her as well as their song “Limitless” with SB19, which they had released in collaboration with Acer and was written by the boy band’s member Pablo
“It was so amazing the opportunity we have to collab with amazing artists and also have that stage for our songs to be performed on. We’re so grateful and it’s truly a milestone for us,” said Jaz. With everything that they’ve been through, the trio expressed their realizations about how much they have changed from the people they were when they first debuted.
AJ shared how different they were from the girls who were still holding back from expressing who they were and were doubtful of where their careers would lead. Alfea said that there was a definite growth in her confidence that came with learning more about the industry. Jaz aired her surprise about how far they have come together as a group and their strengthened bond with each other.
“I didn’t know the possibilities of G22 and how strong we can fight, how much we can persevere with everything that we went through,” said Jaz. The group teased that they have upcoming projects as Acer’s ambassadors which are set to be released soon. One of these projects includes the trio

GETTING OVERSEAS EDUCATION IS EASIER,
By Abigail Adriatico
STUDYING abroad is often considered a lifechanging experience, adding a layer of global and cultural awareness that boosts self-confidence. While tertiary education already focuses on transformation, character-building, and self-discovery, the chance to study abroad amplifies these aspects. Yet, many students hesitate to take the leap.
According to AECC Global, a leading international education consultancy, the key to overcoming the hurdles of studying abroad lies in accessible and accurate information. Contrary to popular belief, studying abroad is more achievable and manageable than many realize.
“Gaining a global edge in competitiveness and cultural literacy doesn’t have to be expensive,” says Jun Mojica, Marketing Manager of AECC. “The cost of tuition fees abroad is often comparable to those of top local universities in the Philippines. Additionally, in some countries, study programs are shorter in duration.”
Countries like Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and the UK not only offer quality education but also provide work rights to students during their studies. Students can work 20 to 24 hours per week during the academic term and unlimited hours during scheduled breaks, which can help cover living expenses and tuition fees. Furthermore, graduates can work up to three years after completing their programs.
AECC Global simplifies the application process, offering expert guidance from school selection to visa application, without charging professional or placement fees. The consultancy partners with over 800 universities across 12 countries, including Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the United States, and the United Kingdom, offering more than 110,000 courses at vocational, undergraduate, and postgraduate levels.
“Entry requirements vary depending on the course, institution, and country,” Mojica explains. “This can include academic prerequisites, language proficiency tests, and application deadlines. Navigating these complexities is where expert guidance becomes invaluable, ensuring that all necessary documents are submitted correctly and on time, increasing the chances of a successful application.”
To further assist students, AECC Global organizes Global Education Fairs, providing direct access to representatives from various international educational institutions.
These events are designed to streamline the application process, making the dream of studying abroad more attainable for Filipino students.

“AMUMA”, a Cebuano word when translated means “to foster” or “to nurture”, has always been the philosophy and cornerstone of the success of Bluewater Maribago Beach Resort for decades—that no strong typhoon, earthquake, and even a pandemic can stop it from delivering a warm and inviting atmosphere that makes every guest feels like their home.
Speaking to Manila Standard Lifestyle, Assistant General Manager Domiku Ugarte, a third-generation owner, reflected on the journey of Bluewater Maribago during the trying times and how it survived.
“You know, I think we were the only resort that did not close. Every resort closed. I think God helped us. We weren’t so super badly hit. We were hit but not as badly as the others. Others had to close for years, right? Some just reopened this year. But us, we never closed— that’s something we’re proud of. We never

closed during COVID. We’ve never closed during [typhoon] Odette. So, I’m hoping that down the line, we will never close,” recalled Ugarte.
On the other hand, Margie Munsayac , Vice President for Marketing, emphasized how the owners remained unwavering no matter what disaster or challenge might come their way.
“It’s about, you know, I will tell you, the guts of the owners, as well as service, they were very definitive that we will not close,” Munsayac stated.
Founded in 1989 by the late Cebuano businessman Arcadio C. Alegrado and his wife Marle Montalban, Bluewater Maribago has grown from a 32-room property to a 255room resort.
As the beach resort enters its 35th year, Bluewater Maribago remains steadfast in its mission to provide guests with unforgettable memories while upholding the rich heritage of Cebuano hospitality.
“Today, as we celebrate 35 years of Amuma— our unique brand of Filipino hospitality—we do so with immense gratitude. Thank you for your trust, and loyalty, and for allowing Bluewater Maribago to be a part of your stories,” Ugarte said in his speech during the beach resort’s anniversary celebration.
“Our commitment to you our cherished guests remains as strong as ever. We will continue to innovate, improve, and provide the exceptional experiences you have come to expect from us. Bluewater Maribago is more than just a resort. It is a community of family and the sanctuary were unforgettable moments,” he added.
True to its commitment to providing worldclass accommodations, pristine beaches, and unparalleled service, it recently unveiled its additional development—the six-story mid-rise building named “Sidlakan”, which is one of Ugarte’s first projects for Bluewater Maribago.
Sidlakan, which translates to “east” in the local dialect, promises to elevate the guest experience with its modern and stylish design. The new building boasts 65 rooms, each thoughtfully appointed with amenities. Guests can also expect breathtaking views from their private balconies, perfect for unwinding and soaking in the resort’s idyllic ambiance. With the addition of Sidlakan, Bluewater Beach Resort reaffirms its position as a leading destination for leisure and relaxation. The resort continues to set new standards for hospitality in the region and is poised for even greater success in the years to come.
