PARIS OLYMPICS OPENS WITH SPECTACULAR CEREMONY

PARIS—The opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics began Friday (Saturday dawn, Manila time), an unprecedented and ambitious show with up to 7,000 athletes parading down the River Seine past the historic monuments of the French capital despite the risk of rain dampening spirits.

For the first time in Olympic history, the opening ceremony took place outside the main stadium, with some 300,000 people watching in person from specially built stands on the river banks, and another 200,000 from overlooking balconies and apartments.

As tradition dictates, the Greek delegation had the honor of leading out the flotilla, as the cradle of the modern Olympic movement.

In an ambitious, high-risk departure from past opening ceremonies, the athletes sailed down the river in an armada of 85 boats.

The show blended both French culture and history and great Olympic moments of the past while US pop star Lady Gaga wowed the crowd of VIPS and spectators with an early performance in the ceremony.

PRESIDENT Marcos ordered national and local governments to prepare for future floods following the onslaught of Super Typhoon “Carina” and the enhanced southwest monsoon or “habagat” in Metro Manila and nearby provinces.

"Let’s prepare for the next flood. This is the first typhoon during La Niña, and we still have a long way to go during this rainy season. So, we have to prepare for that,”

PRESIDENT Marcos said the July 29 opening of schools will not be postponed even as he acknowledged that some schools in storm-hit areas might be forced to conduct classes outside their buildings.

"As much as possible, if the school buildings are in good shape for classes, they will hold them," he said on Friday.

“There are only a few places with water left, but many have been left with mud, rendering them unusable. Additionally, there are damaged materials that we'll have to replace.”

China, Russia vow to counter ‘extra-regional forces’ in Asia

CHINA and Russia's foreign ministers met their Southeast Asian counterparts Friday after vowing to counter "extraregional forces," a day before Washington's top diplomat was due to arrive.

Wang Yi and Sergei Lavrov were attending a three-day meeting of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) bloc in the Laos capital Vientiane.

Both held talks with counterparts from the bloc, while Wang also met with new British Foreign Secretary David Lammy.

On Thursday, Wang and Lavrov agreed to work together in "countering any attempts by extra-regional forces to interfere in Southeast Asian affairs," according to Moscow's foreign ministry.

A low pressure area over the east of southern Mindanao will likely trigger rains on Monday as students troop back to school, the state weather bureau said.

Weather specialist Ana ClaurenJorda said the LPA is forecast to cause rainy weather conditions on Monday in the eastern section of Southern Luzon, Bicol, Eastern Visayas and other parts of Visayas, Caraga, Davao Region and parts of Mindanao.

PAGASA, however, said there is only a slim chance the low pressure area could intensify into a tropical cyclone in the next 24 hours.

Mr. Marcos emphasized the need for a coordinated flood control strategy considering the changing weather patterns and rising sea levels.

He noted that previously floodfree areas are now experiencing flooding, highlighting the need for comprehensive, long-term projects and a reassessment of existing sys-

Despite the forecast of heavy rain, and a wave of attacks which paralyzed France's high-speed rail network early Friday, organizers were confident of pulling off the audacious ceremony.

Chief Games organizer Tony Estanguet said before the show there would be some modifications if it was wet, but he insisted the weather would not dampen the mood.

“Maybe some will be forced to hold classes outside the school building just to have classes. Let's see. It's like that – we've gotten used to it during the pandemic. We'll find a way to still have classes,” he added.

The President said the decision to hold classes in storm-affected areas will be up to individual schools.

Education Secretary Sonny Angara, for his part, said he anticipates a delay in the opening of classes in public schools that have taken heavy storm damage.

The Department of Education reported on Friday that a total of 12,866 basic learning institutions were damaged by this week's typhoons and monsoon rains. Some 738 schools are also incapable of beginning the school year on time across four regions, including,

President Marcos said.

A total of 253 areas in the country were still submerged in flood due to the “habagat,” Typhoon “Butchoy” and “Carina,” the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) on Friday said.

The agency said Central Luzon still holds the highest number of flooded areas at 202, followed by Miraopa with 22 areas.

There are still 90 roads and 6 bridges across the country that were not passable and 24 areas still have power interruptions, NDRRMC said.

The Department of Agriculture, for its part, reported initial losses of P251.21 million across 12,764 hectares of affected farmland.

Agriculture assistant secretary Arnel de Mesa said 3,437 metric tons of crops were lost to the typhoon while 11,000 farmers were affected.

As of Thursday, 90 schools in nine regions – including Metro Manila, Cordillera Administrative Region, Ilocos Region, Cagayan Valley, Central Luzon, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Western Visayas, and Eastern Visaya – were reported to have been badly damaged by the typhoons. Additionally, around 324 schools in six regions are presently out of commission because they are a being used as evacuation centers. Meanwhile, Angara on Friday led the ceremonial signing of the Implementing Rules and Regulations (IRR) of Executive Order (EO) No. 174. Otherwise known as the Expanded Career Progression System for Teachers, the EO aims to promote development among teachers through career advancement.

Speaker Martin Romualdez, for his part, pushed for the urgent update and implementation of the flood management master plan for Metro Manila in the wake of the massive flooding.

“There is already a flood control master plan in place. We just need to follow, update, and implement it,” Romualdez said while distributing relief goods to typhoon victims in San Juan City, Metro Manila on Thursday.

“We can’t avoid stronger storms and heavier rainfall due to climate change. We need to revisit and update our flood control masterplans, implement them fully, and consider relocation for residents in low-lying areas, particularly in places like San Juan and Marikina,” he added.

The EO will allow five new teaching positions to be created, where teachers can be promoted further based on the merits of their service.

“This will not be time-based; they won’t have to wait for our teachers to be promoted for that long. This is also not position-based, meaning that they won’t have to move to other schools. This would also help them to focus on their careers simply to get a higher position,” Angara said.

For his part, Undersecretary Wilfredo Cabral said they are working to implement the order next year.

“We will be expecting a rollback on the prices of petroleum products next week, July 30, 2024, based on the 4-day trading only,” DOE director for the oil industry management bureau Rodela Romero said.

Gasoline pump prices are expected to go down by P0.20 to P0.45 per liter, diesel by P0.40 to P0.60 per ltier and kerosene by P0.70 to P0.90 per liter.

“Final adjustments would be determined after the Friday MOPS (Mean of Platts Singapore) trading,” Romero said. MOPS is the pricing benchmark used by oil importers.

Romero said oil prices settled lower due to the easing fears of an IranIsrael escalation after Tehran said it would not seeks to retaliate to Israel's strike last week.

On July 23, the oil firms increased the price of gasoline by P0.10 per liter but rolled back the price of diesel by P0.40 per liter and kerosene by P0.70 per liter.

Total adjustment of the products year-to-date stood at net increase of P10.35 per liter for gasoline, P8.15 per liter for diesel and P0.50 per liter for kerosene.

The vessel sank in rough seas nearly seven kilometers (4.3 miles) off Limay town early Thursday after setting out for the central city of Iloilo.

"No oil has been leaking from the tank itself, so we're racing against time to siphon the oil, so we can avoid the environmental catastrophe," Balilo said.

The PCG has set a target of seven days to offload the cargo and prevent what Balilo warned would be the worst oil spill in Philippine history if it were to leak.

Risa: Hearings on POGOs will continue

with or without Alice Guo

SENATOR Risa Hontiveros is determined to push her inquiry on the Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) issue pending President Marcos’ order for a total ban of the POGOs.

As this developed, the Chinese Embassy in the Philippines welcomed the President’s decision to ban the POGOs in the country.

Hontiveros said the hearings will resume on Monday notwithstanding the absence of Tarlac Mayor Alice Guo who was at the center of the raging POGO controversy.

“It’s not over yet,” said Hontiveros, chairperson of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality.

She said they wanted to establish culpability of persons behind the illicit operations of POGOs involved in money laundering, scams, human trafficking, kidnapping, and other crimes.

On the defiance of the mayor or Guo Hua Ping to attend the Senate hearings, Hontiveros disclosed her panel was investigating not just Guo, but the whole POGO industry as well.

Joint operatives from Office of the Senate sergeant-at-arms and the Philippine National Police (PNP) armed with an arrest order signed by Senate President Francis Escudero failed to find Guo and her family members and the other ‘resource’ persons.

They were all charged with contempt for failing to show up in the Senate POGO hearings. Guo and her parents and three siblings have been embroiled in the POGO operations in Bamban and Porac, Tarlac.

Nancy Gamo, accountant of Guo, who remains in the Senate custody, will attend the resumption of the POGO hearing.

While POGO operations have been banned, Hontiveros said it is the Senate’s oversight function to guarantee that the phase-out will be enforced and hold liable those linked to the illegal operations, give justice to victimsurvivors, and secure just transition to displaced Filipino POGO workers

“We also need to ensure that our regulatory failures are addressed,” Hontiveros said, adding that multiple government institutions have been corrupted by the POGOs.

STRENGTHENING of PhilippineAmerican alliance and the maintenance of peace, stability, and prosperity in the Indo-Pacific region are among the top items to be discussed in the upcoming 2+2 Ministerial Dialogue in Manila. This was disclosed during a phone call between United States Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Philippine Secretary of Foreign Affairs Enrique Manalo.

Blinken also expressed condolences for the lives lost and the displacement caused by Typhoon Gaemi and recent monsoon-related flooding in the Philippines. He said the US is prepared to provide assistance to the victims.

Earlier, US Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kritenbrink announced that the US hoped to build on the success and momentum of the recent 2+2 dialogue of Japan and the Philippines, reaffirming the critical importance of the U.S.-Japan-Republic of Korea, and the U.S.-Japan-Philippines trilateral cooperation.

“Together the four officials will reaffirm the critical importance of the U.S.Japan alliance in addressing a range of bilateral, regional, and global issues, and continue to build on the momentum of U.S.-Japan-ROK and U.S.-Japan-Philippines trilateral cooperation,” Kritenbrink announced.

“The officials will reaffirm our nations’ shared vision of a free and open Indo-Pacific region and support for adherence to international law in maritime domains. They will discuss ways to deepen coordination on shared challenges, including in the South China Sea, while also advancing our critically important bilateral economic agenda,” Kritenbrink added. NBI raids illicit online lending operators

THE National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) has swooped down on at least two online lending firms Illicit moves to deprive clients of their money.

NBI director Jaime Santiago identified the establishments as Philvest Solutions and 24H PESO which allegedly extort money from borrowers and clients using “deceptive and coercive methods.”

The scheme involved unauthorized processing of personal and sensitive information to contact borrowers, clients, and third parties, falsely claiming outstanding debts through threats and intimidation.

Santiago said their investigations revealed that the suspects were using personal and sensitive information individuals in their contact lists to damage reputations, harass, threaten, coerce, and conduct unduly intrusive methods, such as posting on social media and other platforms.

One of the suspects, identified as Mi Duan alias “Ms. Lucky” was arrested pursuant to the Revised Rules on Criminal Procedure, Rule 113, Section 5.

BARMM water sources test positive for E. coli

COTABATO CITY – The Ministry of Health in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MOHBARMM) on Friday urged residents in flooded areas to boil drinking and cooking water after samples tested positive for E. coli (Escherichia coli) bacteria.

Dr. Kadil Sinolinding Jr., BARMM health minister, said the bacteria were found in laboratory tests of water samples taken from a previously flooded area in the region.

“We noted rising cases of stomach disorders among flood-affected residents in the region and our health,” he said in a radio interview.

“We have distributed over 5,000 aqua tabs to serve as sterilizing tablets so that our evacuees and flood victims are safe in drinking water,” he added.

He said the best prevention for bacterial infection is boiling all drinking and cooking water.

E. coli is commonly found in rivers, streams, lakes, and canals.

Sinolinding said consumption of E. coli-contaminated water sources can be fatal due to severe dehydration from diarrhea.

Customs seizes P11b fake luxury goods

THE Bureau of Customs seized smuggled counterfeit goods, including branded products such as Gucci, Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Nike, Rolex, Apple, Hermes, and Dior, worth P11 billion in Binondo, Manila.

The owners of the seized goods were given a 15-day period to provide proof of payment of correct duties and taxes and evidence of legitimate importation but failed to produce until June 28, 2024.

“For failure to present the required documents, a Warrant of Seizure and Detention (WSD) was issued against the subject counterfeit goods pursuant to Sections 214 and 1113 of the Customs Modernization and Tariff Act in relation to R.A. No. 8293, also known as the Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines,” the bureau said in a statement.

Brand owners who accompanied the Customs officers confirmed the seized items were counterfeit.

The counterfeit goods will be destroyed through shredding and rendering at facilities accredited by the BOC, ensuring these illegal products are permanently removed from circulation. Vito Barcelo

69 foreigners tagged as sex offenders from entering the country in the first half of this year. Latest data from the Bureau of Immigration showed Americans topped the list with 48, followed by four Britons, two Australians, a German, an Indonesian, an overseas British, and one from Papua New Guinea.

In a statement Friday, Immigration Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the number is lower compared to the 84 alien sex predators who were excluded in the same period last year.

Out of the 69 barred foreigners, 58 are registered sex offenders (RSOs) or persons with record of convictions for sex crimes in their respective countries while the rest are either subjects of pending complaints or are under investigation or prosecution for various sex offenses.

All of them were placed on the immigration blacklist and banned from reentering the country for being undesirable aliens.

Last year, the BI launched a program called Project #Shieldkids which aims to conduct an intensified drive against foreign sexual predators attempting to stay or enter the country.

PBBM’s digital infra thrust with budget’

GREATER budget allocation in the 2025 budget and succeeding cycles should be prioritized to plug the gaps in digital infrastructure raised by President Marcos during his State of the Nation Address on Monday, a top international think tank said.

Stratbase Institute President Victor Andres Manhit said aside from economic development and inclusive growth, connectivity is most crucial in post-disaster efforts and in preventing similar damage and destruction through information sharing and dissemination.

“The President said some P3 trillion in total investments in various sectors have already been green lane-certified. This is well and good, but our legislators should already be looking ahead

and prioritize the funding of Phases 2 and 3 of the national fiber backbone as soon as possible,” he said.

President Marcos reported in his SONA that Phase 1 of the National Fiber Backbone has been operationalized, with the next two phases expected to be completed by 2026.

The backbone intends to improve the number of households in the Philippines connected to the internet, which in 2022 stood at just 77 percent of 20.6 million households.

“It is heartening that the President acknowledged the initiative and participation of private sector partners in accomplishing our nation’s connectivity goals,” Manhit said.

In his speech, the President also mentioned the nearly 10 million unique

Without sufficient investments in digital infrastructure, the plan will unfortunately remain in the critical wish list and will again be a nagging problem in the next SONA,” Manhit said.

City Mayor Abigail Binay reprimanded local government officials on Friday for allowing an advertising firm to rename a street sign from Gil Puyat to Gil Tulog Avenue – a play on the Filipino words “puyat” or lacking in sleep and “tulog” or asleep for a wellness product

She has since ordered for the signs to be taken down.

“It is unfortunate that the request for a permit for the so-called advertising campaign to change the street signs of Gil Puyat Avenue did not reach my office,” Binay said in a statement. “ I have already reprimanded these officials for this glaring oversight.”

The street sign renaming, which has gone viral on social media, turned out to be a marketing ploy for a melatonin brand selling supplements allegedly promoting sleep improvement.

“Kung dumaan sa akin yan, rejected ‘yan agad (If that reached my office, it would be rejected right away),” the mayor added.

Binay said the city officials who issued the permit should have exercised prudence.

“They should have been more thorough,” she said.

“They should have thought about the confusion it would cause for motorists and commuters. And they should have valued the respect it symbolizes for the family and memories of former Senate President Gil Puyat.” Binay also issued an apology on behalf of Makati City.

“I apologize to our countrymen and the family of former Senate President Puyat. These signs have been taken down on my instruction,” she said.

A plenum, a visit and the PH’s future

AN ASIAN event discussed profusely in the West, especially in the United States, but meriting hardly an inside page story in Philippine mainstream print media or any discussion in social media is the 3rd Plenum of the 20th CPC-CC (Communist Party of China, Central Committee).

It is the government of the People’s Republic of China top decision-making body finalizing the 5-year plan for China’s socialist-market system in today’s “New Era.”

The quinquennial 3rd Plenary of the 5-year CPC-CC term has become a regular focus of global attention since the historic 3rd Plenum of the 11th CPC-CC in 1978.

There Premier Deng Xiaoping enunciated the modernization campaign that delivered in 46-year socio-economic, geopolitical and technological marvel China has become, uplifting 1.4-billion of its people from the morass of feudal poverty to the pinnacle of economic and technological success in such a short time.

The 3rd Plenum has since become a legend of success of CPC State planning and implementation process, introducing a new concept of democracy delivering wholistic protection of both human and economic or material rights to its teeming nation.

Surprisingly it gave hope of the same to the Global Majority of developing nations struggling for final liberation from halfa-millennium of stultifying exploitative Western domination.

Last July 24, the Filipino “think tank” Asian Century Philippines Strategic Studies Institute did a Zoom forum on the subject of “The 3rd Plenum and its Impact on PH-China ties,” a topic that has become timely again as Philippine-China relations are undergoing a process of “de-escalation” or “easing of tensions.”

This, after a-year-and-a-half of USinspired “assertive transparency,” a strategy of tension, now apparently rejected by the PBBM government after protest from AFP elements.

Many unbelieving Filipino and foreign observers won’t be holding their breaths over how long and how far the PBBM government can push the de-escalation.

That’s why our second topic is important as it is about the visit of US State Secretary Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin to meet their Filipino counterparts on July 30 at the ShangrilaBGC for the quaintly called “2 + 2 diplomatic meeting” to ink some agreements.

The 2 + 2 meet of the US and Philippine counterparts is seen as the start of Round 2 of US pressure on PBBM to junk de-escalation and return to the strategy of tension against China.

If that succeeds, then the 3rd Plenum wider opening up of the Chinese market, opening up to foreign talents (including high level OFWs appreciated worldwide), opening up to foreign investment of many new sectors, among many other opportunities for the Philippines, will be all for naught here.

On July 29, the Anti-War Coalition brought together by the ACPSSII group of Ka Mentong (Herman Tiu Laurel), Ka Eric Celis of NTF-ELCAC and Anti-Imperialist group of RJ Javellana, with other groups, will gather at Aberdeen Court to protest against the Blinken-Austin visit.

Javellana’s group will be parading on Quezon Blvd. with three giant nuclear bomb effigies wearing “No to War, No to EDCA” shirts, to raise awareness of the imperative to rid the country of the US interference, its military bases and its warmongering.

If PBBM is to salvage his presidency, he must firm up now that he’s got one direction right at least and stay the course to reconciliation with China

The protest action will add a strong voice to the growing clamor from the “independent public intellectual class” on social media.

They include very assertive retired military officers such as Gens. Orlando de Leon, Romeo Poquiz, and Johnny Macanas, for the country to return and stay the course towards the independent foreign policy and advocacy of “friend to all, enemy to none” foreign relations to save the country from the warmongering of the West and some domestic sources. If PBBM -- suffering from self-inflicted slings-and-arrows from his “P20-rice” to the SONA’s “5,500 flood control projects” that did not show itself in the floods of Typhoon Carina, and the “Philippines cannot waver” but then seesawed twice on deescalation – is to salvage his presidency, he must firm up now that he’s got one direction right at least and stay the course to reconciliation with China, revive the 60-40 percent Oil-Gas Recto Bank deal and bring in the energy and cash from that project that only China can make possible. rpkapunan@gmail.com

Luzon’s transpo infra: The transformation continues

“YOU really have been a steadfast partner of the government through the years. Let us keep that partnership strong and vibrant.” This quote from President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. addressed to San Miguel Corporation during the signing of the TPLEx (Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway) Extension Concession Agreement is a testament to the conglomerate’s contribution to the country’s development.

It is also a recognition of the importance of government and private sector partnerships in pursuing infrastructure projects.

“With more meaningful public-private partnerships like this, we can pursue and gain more for the benefit of the nation,” the President said.

Part of the government’s efforts towards social and economic transformation is the expansion and upgrade of the infrastructure sector.

The government’s Build Better More program is a major focus under the Bagong Pilipinas campaign launched by the President. With better infrastructure it will be easier, faster and cheaper to transport goods and services.

The TPLEx Extension, one of the projects of the BBM program, stemmed from an unsolicited proposal from San Miguel Holdings Corporation, a subsidiary of SMC. This is not the first unsolicited proposal from the conglomerate that has passed scrutiny. The ongoing New Manila International Airport in Bulacan and MRT line

7 were also unsolicited proposals carried out by SMC.

“Not only are you embarking on another challenge of turning visions into reality — you are also leading a brilliant example of how the private sector can have a great impact on our country’s development,” the President told SMC during the same event.

The TPLEx extension is a P23.36 billion transport infrastructure project is targeted to commence next year. and stretches 59.4 km.

It is a four-lane toll road that will start from the Rosario, La Union exit of TPLEX and end at San Juan, La Union.

It is divided into these segments: Segment 1 (Rosario to Tubao) 18 km; Segment 2 (Tubao to Naguilian) 23 kms; and Segment 3 (Naguilian to San Juan) 18.4 kms.

Dogging diplomacy in disputed waters

PROPITIOUS, that the Philippines will continue pursuing a diplomatic approach and uphold the rule of law in the disputed West Philippine Sea within the country’s exclusive economic zone.

This was underscored by the Department of Foreign Affairs as it expounded on the Marcos administration’s work to defend the country’s rights in the WPS through peaceful means.

The emphasis followed the third State of the Nation Address of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., where DFA Undersecretary Charles Jose explained the Philippines will not waver in pursuing the peaceful settlement of disputes in line with international law in the area.

“In the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine position remains firm. We will continue to assert our sovereignty, sovereign rights and jurisdiction in our maritime zones and find ways forward through diplomacy and dialogue pursuant to what the President articulated during the SONA,” he said in midweek, two days after the President’s address to the nation.

He added: “Our actions will continue to be firmly anchored on the rules-based international order governed by international law, particularly UNCLOS (United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea) and the 2016 Arbitral Award on the South China Sea.”

While the Philippine side continues to pursue the diplomatic approach, the other side must also do the same, given the 9th Bilateral Consultation Mechanism meeting

Beijing continues to reject the UNCLOS-based award, insisting on its claims based on its controversial nine-dash line over the vast trade route, including Manila’s waters within the West Philippine Sea.

The nine-dash line is a visual representation of China’s claims that appears on some Chinese official maps and comparative maps of disputed claims in the South China Sea.

AH, PASIG City, home of the latest entry in the “Most Expensive Edifices in the Known Universe” competition.

Move over Burj Khalifa and the International Space Station, there’s a new kid on the block – the P9.6 billion Pasig City Hall Complex!

The news has locals scratching their heads and wondering if they missed the memo about Pasig needing to impress the aliens.

First, let’s take a stroll down memory lane.

Historically, city hall projects have ranged from the utilitarian to the grandiose.

However, none has ever quite matched the sheer audacity of spending nearly P10 billion on a building while the city’s public services are apparently running on fumes.

Mayor Vico Sotto, lauded for his clean and progressive image, seems to have decided that what Pasigueños really need is a city hall so magnificent it can be seen from space.

Now, imagine you’re a resident of Pasig. Your local hospital is out of aspirin, your kid’s school is fundraising for chalk, and the road outside your house has more craters than the moon.

But wait!

Here comes the city government with a solution: a gleaming new city hall! Problem solved, right?

The letter from Curlee Discaya, Pasig’s very own Santa Claus in contractor form, suggests the city’s funds might be better spent on things like healthcare and education.

You know, little things like keeping people alive and giving kids an education.

facilitate connectivity to Central Luzon and Metro Manila, will also contribute to economic growth.

Travel time between Rosario and San Juan will be reduced from the current 90 minutes to about 40 minutes.

The operation of all sections of the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway in 2022 provided ease of travel to residents, tourists and logistics.

During the presentation of the signed TPLEx Extension Agreement, SMC Chairman and CEO Don Ramon S. Ang said the project will unlock new opportunities for many Filipinos.

“By enabling faster and more efficient travel, we are fueling economic growth, creating jobs, and boosting trade and tourism in the Ilocos Region.”

A special release by the Philippine Statistics Authority on the 2022 Economic Performance of the Provinces in the Phil-

adjudicating Manila’s case against Beijing in the South China Sea ruled overwhelmingly in favor of Manila, determining major elements of Beijing’s claim – including its nine-dash line, recent land reclamation activities, and other activities in Philippine waters – were unlawful. While the Philippine side continues to pursue the diplomatic approach, the other side must also do the same, given the 9th Bilateral Consultation Mechanism meeting.

That provided the momentum for a series of consultations that led to the recently concluded “Arrangement on the Principles and Approaches” to be be observed during the Philippines’ resupply missions to Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal within the Philippines 200-mile exclusive economic zone.

We feel, alongside like-minded Filipinos, this understanding, reached without prejudicing the Philippine and Chinese positions over the South China Sea, is a “positive contribution to deescalate tensions” in the area. We hear once more President Marcos, whose address to the nation continues to echo vibrantly the Philippines will neither yield nor waver in asserting its maritime rights he stressed were no mirage of the Filipinos’ mind. His words: “The West Philippine Sea is ours. And it will remain ours as our love for our country remains ablaze.”

The President was right on the nail.

Sotto’s Pasig City Hall dream

But hey, why settle for mundane necessities when you can have a monument to municipal governance?

Discaya argues the price tag of P9,623,100,154.64 is a tad excessive.

According to him, any seasoned builder will tell you that even high-quality constructions should not exceed P70,000 per square meter. But who cares about norms when you’re aiming for the Guinness World Record for the most lavish local government building?

Then there’s the ethical angle.

In the end, let’s aim for a city that shines not just with its buildings, but with the well-being of its people

Sure, the Philippine Supreme Court and various ethical standards suggest public funds should be used for the greatest good. But let’s not get bogged down in legalese and morality. If the residents of Pasig need to see a doctor, they can always head to the new city hall and marvel at its architectural splendor. Laughter is the best medicine, after all.

On the flip side, let’s consider the defense.

Perhaps Mayor Sotto is a visionary. Maybe he sees a future where city hall is the center of not just municipal activi-

ippines showed among the top 10 provinces in terms of share to the national Gross Domestic Product at constant 2018 prices, four provinces are from Central Luzon and one from Ilocos Region.

Meanwhile, in the list of top 10 fastestgrowing provinces in terms of GDP annual growth rate, six are from Luzon. With the signing of the concession agreement, detailed engineering design and right-of-way acquisition will follow.

Recipient of this year’s ‘Gawad Gat Andres Bonifacio,’ the highest distinction given each year as highlight of the Araw ng Maynila celebration, RSA shared the award with his San Miguel family “who work tirelessly to uplift countless lives not only in Tondo but across Manila and the entire Philippines.”

ties but also cultural enlightenment. Who needs more hospitals when you can have a building that’s “future proof”? Maybe, just maybe, in a few centuries, historians will look back and say, “Wow, those Pasigueños really had their priorities straight.” Sotto’s team assures us the construction will be transparent and wellplanned.

I, for one, can’t wait for the grand opening, complete with a laser light show and maybe a cameo from Elon Musk.

After all, if you’re going to spend billions, you might as well go all out.

So, which side is right?

Is it the camp that argues for practicality and immediate public needs, or the camp that dreams big with a city hall that’s a beacon of progress (and possibly visible from Mars)?

In my highly unbiased, professional opinion, both sides need to lighten up and find some common ground.

Perhaps build a moderately expensive city hall and use the savings to throw a city-wide party where everyone gets free school supplies and aspirin.

My recommendation: Take a deep breath, Pasig.

Maybe scale down the project to a reasonable level. Use the savings for the dire needs of your residents.

And when the new, slightly less extravagant city hall opens, celebrate it as a symbol of practical progress – with fireworks, because who doesn’t love fireworks?

In the end, let’s aim for a city that shines not just with its buildings, but with the well-being of its people. After all, isn’t that what good governance is really about?

2 in Mexico’s Sinaloa drug syndicate in US custody

WASHINGTON, DC – US agents arrested two top leaders of Mexico’s Sinaloa drug cartel in Texas on Thursday, the justice department said, striking a major blow to one of the most powerful and violent criminal organizations in the world.

Ismael Zambada Garcia, also known as ‘El Mayo,’ co-founder of the Cartel, and Joaquin Guzman Lopez, a son of its other co-founder, were arrested in El Paso, Attorney General Merrick Garland said in a statement.

Details about the arrests have not been officially released, but US media said law enforcement sources described a dramatic sting operation in which El Mayo was unwittingly lured across the border.

Garland described the Sinaloa cartel as “one of the most violent and powerful drug trafficking organizations in the world.”

The pair face “multiple charges in the United States for leading the Cartel’s criminal operations, including its deadly fentanyl manufacturing and trafficking networks,” he said. The arrests are another major blow to the Sinaloa cartel, whose co-founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzman is serving a life sentence in a maximum security prison in the United States. El Chapo was convicted in 2019 of running what was believed to be the world’s biggest narcotics syndicate. The cartel, which was born in the northwestern state of Sinaloa, is one of Mexico’s most powerful and violent criminal groups. After El Chapo’s capture, several of his sons, collectively known as the “Chapitos” or “The Little Chapos,” inherited control of the organization, according to US authorities. AFP

Journalists strike at top newspapers

MELBOURNE – Journalists at some of Australia’s largest newspapers launched a rare five-day strike Friday, downing tools ahead of the Olympic opening ceremony due to a rancorous pay dispute.

The strike hit the Sydney Morning Herald, The Age and Australian Financial Review, in one of the most significant acts of industrial defiance to hit Australia’s troubled news sector in years.

It is estimated hundreds of journalists employed under the umbrella of Nine Entertainment have deserted newsrooms in major cities Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Perth.

Several sports writers sent to Paris for the Olympics will also strike, despite parent company Nine paying US$200 million as part of a package deal to secure broadcasting rights.

“The Australian public relies on these journalists to keep them informed, to hold power to account and to shine a light on corruption and wrongdoing, but they cannot do it without safe and secure jobs,” said union representative Michelle Rae.

Reporters picketed outside The Age newsroom in Melbourne, waving placards and clad in matching white T-shirts reading: “Don’t torch journalism.”

While the dispute is tied to pay negotiations, tensions have heightened after management recently unveiled a plan to slash as many as 90 newspaper jobs across the company. AFP

France’s high-speed rail network disrupted

PARIS

– France’s high-speed rail network was hit by “malicious acts” including arson attacks that have disrupted the transport system, train operator SNCF said Friday, hours before the opening ceremony of the Paris Olympics.

“This is a massive attack on a large scale to paralyze the TGV network,” SNCF told AFP, adding that many routes will have to be canceled and the situation would last “at least all weekend while repairs are conducted”.

“SNCF was the victim of several simultaneous malicious acts overnight,” the national train operator said, adding that the attacks affected its Atlantic, northern and eastern lines.

“Arson attacks were started to damage our facilities,” it said, adding that traffic on the affected lines was “heavily disrupted”.

Trains were being diverted to different tracks “but we will have to cancel a large number of them”, the statement said.

The southeastern line was not affected as “a malicious act was foiled”.

SNCF urged passengers to postpone their trips and stay away from train stations. AFP

Harris signals major shift in talks with Netanyahu

WASHINGTON,

DC – Kamala

Harris signaled a major shift on US Gaza policy Thursday (Friday Manila time) , with the presidential hopeful telling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to seal a peace deal and insisting she would not be “silent” on the suffering in the Palestinian enclave.

Ripping up outgoing President Joe Biden’s playbook of mostly behind-the-scenes pressure on Israel, the vice president said after meeting Netanyahu that it was time to end the “devastating” war.

“What has happened in Gaza over the past nine months is devastating. The images of

dead children and desperate hungry people fleeing for safety, sometimes displaced for the second, third or fourth time,” Harris told reporters.

“We cannot look away in the face of these tragedies. We cannot allow ourselves to become numb to the suffering and I will not be silent.”

The 59-year-old -- now the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee after Biden said over the weekend he would not stand in November’s election -- said she pressed Netanyahu on the dire situation in the “frank” meeting.

She said she “expressed with the prime minister my serious concern about the scale of human suffering in Gaza, including the death of far too many innocent civilians.”

“And I made clear my serious concern about the dire humanitarian situation there.”

Biden, for his part, held Oval Office talks with Netanyahu and called on him to swiftly “finalize” a deal on a Gaza ceasefire and the release of hostages, and “reach a durable end to the war in Gaza,” according to a White House readout of the meeting.

Harris also called for the establishment of a Palestinian state and, similar to Biden, urged both Netanyahu and Hamas to agree to a ceasefire and hostage release deal to end the war sparked by Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack on Israel.

“As I just told Prime Minister Netanyahu, it is time to get this deal done,” she said.

Harris’s outspoken comments were a stark contrast to the largely amiable greetings between Biden and Netanyahu earlier in the day, even if it masked months of tensions between the two men as well as questions over the US president’s relevance.

“From a proud Zionist Jew to a proud Zionist Irish American, I want to thank you for 50 years of public service and 50 years of support for the State of Israel,” Netanyahu said in tribute to Biden at the start of the Oval Office meeting.

Harris has been more outspoken on Gaza in the past than Biden and there had been speculation that she could adopt a tougher approach on Israel. Officials earlier denied there is any “daylight” between her and the president. AFP

Thousands flee fast-spreading wildfire in north California Plan

RRIO DE JANEIRO

– Brazil’s vision for a global deal to tax the ultra-rich sparked divisions Thursday (Friday Manila time) at a meeting of G20 finance ministers in Rio de Janeiro, where Washington dismissed the need for an international accord on the matter.

The initiative, discussed at an afternoon meeting, is a key priority for Brazil’s leftist president Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, who this year heads the G20 grouping of the world’s major economies, the European Union and the African Union.

Even before talks began, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen dampened the mood by saying there was no need for a global agreement

on taxing billionaires.

“Tax policy is very difficult to coordinate globally,” she told journalists. “We think that all countries should make sure that their taxation systems are fair and progressive.”

However, those backing the plan saw having it on the agenda as a key first step.

After the meeting, Brazil’s Economy Minister Fernando Haddad expressed his confidence in the initiative, and said a final “declaration” to be published Friday would mark a “first step.”

This communique will take up the “Brazilian proposal to start looking at international taxation, not only from the point of view of companies, but also from the point of view of individuals called the super-rich.” AFP

Gaemi displaces nearly 300,000 in eastern China

BEIJING – Authorities evacuated nearly 300,000 people and suspended public transport across eastern China on Friday, as Typhoon Gaemi brought torrential rains already responsible for five deaths in nearby Taiwan. Gaemi was the strongest typhoon to hit Taiwan in eight years when it made landfall on Thursday, flooding parts of the island’s second-biggest city. Typhoon Gaemi exacerbated seasonal rains in the Philippines on its path to Taiwan, triggering flooding and landslides that killed 30 people, according to police figures on Friday.

A tanker carrying 1.4 million litres of oil sank off Manila on Thursday, with authorities racing to offload the cargo and avoid an environmental catastrophe. In Japan, Record heavy rain forced the evacuation of thousands of people across parts of northern Japan as rivers burst their banks, washing away bridges and cars, officials and media reports said Friday. At least one person was killed and four missing after the downpours in Yamagata and Akita prefectures on the main island of Honshu. AFP

LOS ANGELES --Firefighters were battling a fast-moving wildfire in the US state of California on Thursday (Friday Manila time), authorities said, with more than 3,500 people forced to flee their homes.

The Park Fire broke out Wednesday evening, on the last day of a heat wave affecting the region.

More than 1,150 personnel were deployed to fight the blaze, which was only three percent contained, according to the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection (CalFire).

As of 6:00 pm local time on Thursday, the fire had enveloped 50,565 hectares, according to CalFire.

More than 3,500 people had evacuated the area, Governor Gavin Newsom said.

The town of Chico, under threat from the fire, is located just 12 miles (20 kilometers) west of Paradise, a town that was destroyed by a massive wildfire in 2018, resulting in the deaths of 85 people.

The cause of the Park Fire remains under investigation, according to CalFire.

A 42-year-old man suspected of sparking it was arrested “after an unknown male was seen pushing a car that was on fire into a gully” near the origin of the fire, Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey said in a statement.

The car completely burned, spreading the flames that caused the fire in the park, the statement added.

On Thursday, the National Weather Service issued a “red flag” weather warning for “critical fire weather conditions” in the area, including wind gusts and low humidity.

The western United States has experienced several heat waves since the beginning of June, and dozens of fires are currently burning in the region. Oregon, California’s northern neighbor, is battling a megafire that is the largest in the country, having ravaged more than 268,000 acres of forest and prompting evacuations in a rural region. AFP

Councilor demands probe into Cebu City track oval

AMEMBER of the Cebu City Council is demanding an investigation into the track oval of the Cebu City Sports Complex, which was recently used during the 2024 Palarong Pambansa.

Councilor Mary de Los Santos introduced a resolution expressing her concerns about the track oval, which she described as “a source of embarrassment.”

De los Santos called for the probe after learning that “one lane was found to be 1.5 meters short of the standard 400-meter distance and the other lanes had an average discrepancy of 0.88 meters.”

As a result, 11 of the 13 athletic event records that were broken were not recognized, affecting 19 athletes from five regions, de los Santos said during her privilege speech on Wednesday.

“Who should bear responsibility? What is the responsibility of the Local Government and the con -

tractor?” asked de los Santos, a former athlete and running enthusiast, during the session.

The Cebu City Sports Complex was reopened to the public last week, but the oval is set to be closed again after the Pasigarbo sa Sugbo event next month.

Cebu City Sports Commission officials, led by chairman John Pages, announced that repairs will soon be made to correct the discrepancies in the oval’s measurements.

The contractor, SBD Builders, has been working on the oval repairs since it was closed in March last year, prior to its reopening for the Palarong Pambansa.

Gialon rises above the heat, wins JPGT Apo

DAVAO—Aldrien Gialon overcame a disastrous quadruple bogey on the par-5 No. 3 with a determined series of pars and birdies, securing a commanding lead and ultimately clinching the boys’ 16-18 category title by 10 with a 76 in the ICTSI JPGT Mindanao Series I at Apo Golf and Country Club yesterday (Friday).

Gialon’s brilliant finish, highlighted by two birdies in the last six holes, helped him outgun his rivals, who had been pressing their bids throughout the final round under sweltering conditions.

Despite the pressure, Adrian Bisera and Rainier Tagwalan failed to match Gialon’s fiery finish, settling for the runner-up and third-place finishes after 81 and 85, respectively, in the premier division of the four-age category series organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.

Gialon closed with 40-36, following three rounds of 78, to assemble a 72-hole total of 310, earning a remarkable 10-stroke victory over his cousin, Bisera.

In contrast, Bisera stumbled with three bogeys in the same stretch where Gialon showcased his killer instinct, finishing second with 38-43 for a 320, while Tagwalan struggled on the back nine, which he played in 8-over, ending with a 41-44 for a total of 323.

Kenly Wacan placed fourth with a 331 after an 84 while Gian Bullecer

carded an 81 to finish fifth with 332. The 18-year-old Gialon’s performance, marked by resilience and skill, secured him a well-deserved victory in the challenging conditions of the 72hole tournament sponsored by ICTSI.

“There was pressure in the first three holes, but I didn’t lose my composure after the quadruple bogey on No. 3,” said Gialon, referring to the setback that allowed Bisera to close within one stroke.

Cebu’s UV cops cage crown; C. Vizayas bags volley titles

LEGAZPI CITY, Albay—The University of Visayas clobbered the University of Bicol, 97-71, to secure the men’s basketball title as leader Central Visayas ended its campaign in the senior division of the Private Schools Athletic Association (PRISAA) National Games here on Friday with 119 gold, 73 silver and 65 bronze medals.

Central Visayas bagged the men’s beach volleyball title over Western Visayas, 23-21, 21-8 at the Sawangan Park and annexed the women’s crown after prevailing over Soccsksargen, 21-12, 22-20, at the University of Santo Tomas-Legazpi beach volleyball court, while boxers Freshler Utera (51kgs) and Jericho Asilo (57kgs) triumped at the Pacific Mall. Western Visayas ranked second with 79 golds, 38 silvers and 55 bronze medals, while Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) was third with 54 golds, 46 silvers and 54 bronzes.

CAR dominated the Olympic round individual men and women, team men and women and mixed senior, and the 1440-round men and women events in archery at the old Albay airport and got three more golds from boxers

Kathleen Igualdo (women’s 48kgs) and Frenzie Allen Golocan (men’s 63.5kgs).

Soccsksargen ranked fourth with 52 gold medals, including five courtesy of boxers Ian Carl Muyso (men’s 54kgs), Kristine Grace Marquez (women’s 54kgs), Darlen Literal (women’s 57kgs), Reymar Gayola (men’s 75kgs) and John Jelord Bejasa (men’s 80kgs).

Rounding out the Top 10 are Calabarzon, fifth with 38 golds, 38 silvers and 50 bronzes followed by Ilocos Region (25-10-18), Negros Island Region (20-34-27), Western Mindanao (18-12-13), Bicol Region (7-29-61) and Central Luzon (6-7-13).

Bicol Region led the Youth division with 84 golds, 63 silvers and 53 bronzes. The Bicolanos ruled the Olympic round individual boys and girls, team boys and girls and mixed, and the 1440-round boys and girls events.

Calabarzon was second with 73 golds, 41 silvers and 35 bronzes followed by Western Visayas (54-68-59), Central Luzon (41-3565), Central Visayas (32-47-26), Northern Mindanao (29-32-18), NIR (19-4-16), Socc (11-1-1), Davao Region (9-16-31) and Western Mindanao (9-5-13).

“As the competition tightened, I became more focused,” said Gialon, who had driven out of bounds, landed in bunkers twice and three-putted on the third hole.

He bounced back from that misstep and a bogey on No. 4 by birdieing the fifth hole and then stringing together four pars, finishing the front nine with a 40.

Meanwhile, Bisera failed to capitalize fully, dropping strokes on Nos. 6 and 7 and finishing with a 38, enabling Gialon to regain a comfortable threestroke cushion at the turn.

Tagwalan attempted to close the gap, closing to within three strokes after Gialon’s miscue. However, the first-day leader’s early struggles, including a triple-bogey on No. 1, led to a frontside 41.

The back nine became a test of iron play and nerves, with Gialon holding off Bisera’s threats by birdieing Nos. 13 and 15, maintaining firm control until the final hole.

Aside from the medal, he secured 15 valuable points in the race for the top two spots in the four-leg Mindanao Series, leading to the Match Play Championship at The Country Club in Laguna in October.

Next up is the Mindanao Series 2 at the nearby South Pacific Golf and Leisure Estates, starting Tuesday (July 30) where Gialon n. The Del Monte Golf Club in Bukidnon will host the third leg from Aug. 6 to 9, and the series will conclude at Pueblo de Oro Golf and Country Club in Cagayan de Oro from Aug. 12 to 15.

Cignal, Akari seek 3rd straight PVL wins against separate foes

CIGNAL and Akari aim for their third consecutive victories as they face teams determined to shake up the Pool B leaderboard in the Premier Volleyball League Reinforced Conference at Philsports Arena, Pasig City.

Thursday’s matches were postponed due to bad weather, with Pool A games rescheduled for Aug. 8, shifting the spotlight to the Pool B contenders in this mid-season conference organized by Sports Vision.

In its ongoing commitment to social responsibility, the league conducted relief efforts for those affected by the floods caused by Typhoon Carina in Cavite, substituting the postponed Thursday matches.

Cignal is set to challenge Capital1’s newly discovered strength, showcased in the Solar Spikers’ surprising victory over the two-time champion Petro Gazz Angels last Tuesday.

The HD Spikers, fresh from a hardfought four-set win against the winless ZUS Coffee Thunderbelles, are confident of their chances in their 1 p.m. showdown.

MJ Perez and Ces Molina will lead Cignal’s charge as they seek to extend their winning streak to three.

Coach Shaq delos Santos has stressed the need for aggression and consistency, saying: “So yung attacks lang namin and siguro more on yung communication ng setter to attacker na kailangan maging mas aggressive kami. So kailangan mas ma-control pa namin yun. And mas maging aggressive and focus namin sa attack namin,” said delos Santos. Perez echoed this sentiment, saying: Definitely, for our next opponent, we have to play more aggressively, play more consistently and enjoy the game more.”

at the world’s most prestigious sporting event, each with a unique story and an Olympic dream to pursue.

Philippine Olympic Committee (POC) President Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino anticipates that returning Olympians Yulo and Eumir Marcial will lead a strong start for a Philippine team aiming to match or surpass the historic first Olympic gold won by Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo in Tokyo 2020, and the silvers secured by boxers Carlo Paalam and Nesthy Petecio.

“We’re looking forward to Caloy [Yulo], Eumir, and Joanie giving the country that strong start in Paris,” said Tolentino, who will be flying to the French capital on Tuesday. “They’re all ready, inspired, and in high spirits.”

Marcial though won’t be seeing action until Wednesday after earning a first-round bye along with fellow Tokyo medalist Carlo Paalam. Their quest for gold has become shorter as they need only two wins to be assured of bronze and two more thereafter to bag the gold.

Delgaco gets into gear as she competes in the women’s single sculls’ initial Heats on Saturday.

The 26-year-old earned her place in Paris fol-

lowing a fourth-place finish in the Final A of the women’s single sculls in the World Rowing Asian and Oceanian Qualification Regatta in the Republic of Korea. She is the first Filipina rower to qualify for the Olympics and only the fourth rower from the Philippines to achieve this milestone. The Philippines was last represented in rowing by Cris Nievarez in Tokyo 2020.

Catantan also honed her abilities by training with male fencers in Venice, Italy, for three weeks. She was joined by Matteo Zennaro, the Penn State University fencing team foil coach, who is originally from Italy and organized the training camp after Catantan qualified for the Olympics last April. Following her training in Venice, Catantan and coach Amat Canlas attended the Metz training camp to further refine her techniques.

In another matchup, Martyna Jelinska of Poland (No. 31) will face Youssra Zakarani of Morocco (No. 34). The winners of these matches will advance to the round of 32 in the DE. Kiefer, a Fil-American fencer with roots in Tagum City, Davao del Norte, is the defending champion, having won gold at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics by defeating Russian champion Inna Deriglazova 15-13 in the finals. Former Philippine team member Maxine Esteban, now a naturalized fencer for Ivory Coast, is also competing. Esteban is ranked No. 20 and will face No. 13 Pauline Ranvier of France. The winner of this bout will take on No. 4 Martina Favaretto of Italy in the round of 16.

USA, World Cup holder Spain bag women’s Olympic football openers

REIGNING Ballon d’Or Aitana Bonmati scored one goal and helped create another as World Cup holder Spain beat Japan, 2-1, in their first game of the women’s Olympic football tournament on Thursday, while record four-time gold medalist the United States beat Zambia 3-0.

Spain is making their Olympic women’s football debut at the Paris Games but is the leading contender to win gold after their World Cup triumph in Australia and New Zealand last year.

They fell behind against Japan in Group C in the western French city of Nantes to Aoba Fujino’s superb early free-kick, but Bonmati soon equalized as she rounded the goalkeeper to score midway through the first half.

Spain then grabbed the winner in the 74th minute when Mariona Caldentey exchanged passes with Bonmati before firing in.

With 12 teams split into three groups of four, there is a margin for error as the two best thirdplaced sides will advance to the quarter-finals.

That will provide some comfort for Japan, silver medalists at London 2012.

A strong Spain starting XI featured seven players who were in the line-up for last year’s World Cup final win over England in Sydney, plus Alexia

Putellas, the two-time former Ballon d’Or winner.

In the same section, two-time silver medalists Brazil beat Nigeria 1-0 in Bordeaux. Former world player of the year Marta, in her sixth Olympics at the age of 38, had an effort disallowed for offside before setting up Gabi Nunes for the only goal late in the first half.

Swanson double

The USA has come to the Games with a young squad but with high hopes of success under new coach Emma Hayes. They were comfortable winners against Zambia in Nice but should have triumphed by a greater margin after netting three times in the first half against opponents who had a player sent off before the break.

Trinity Rodman and Mallory Swanson both hit the woodwork before Rodman—daughter of former NBA superstar Dennis Rodman— scored on 17 minutes with a lovely turn and finish in the box.

Swanson made it 2-0 on 24 minutes when she controlled Lindsey Horan’s pass and finished, and she netted again just a minute later, this time rounding the goalkeeper to slot in. Zambia’s Pauline Zulu was left in tears as she

ARSON attacks scrambled France’s high-speed rail network for tens of thousands of passengers on Friday, after what officials called premeditated acts of “sabotage” just hours before the Paris Olympics opened. Friday’s attacks were launched as the French capital was under heavy security ahead of the Games opening ceremony, with 300,000 spectators and an audience of VIPs expected at the event.

The fires that affected France’s Atlantic, northern and eastern lines led to cancellations and delays at a time of particularly heavy traffic for summer holiday travel.

Around 800,000 passengers are expected to be affected over the weekend as the damage is heavy and labor-intensive to repair.

“Early this morning, coordinated and prepared acts of sabotage were perpetrated against installations of SNCF,” the national rail operator, Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said.

“There are huge and serious consequences for the rail network,” he added, while security ser-

vices are hunting the culprits.

SNCF chief executive Jean-Pierre Farandou said that the attackers had started fires in “conduits carrying multiple (fiber-optic) cables” that carry “safety information for drivers” or control the motors for points.

“There’s a huge number of bundled cables. We have to repair them one by one, it’s a manual operation” requiring” hundreds of workers,” he added.

Passenger services chief Christophe Fanichet said there were delays of 90 minutes to two hours on services between Paris and France’s north and east. Strict Security France’s intelligence services were scrambling to determine the perpetrators of the sabotage, a security source told AFP.

International passport for goods to lift trade—DOF

THE Department of Finance said the full implementation of an international merchandise passport will boost the global visibility of Filipino products and expand market access for local businesses.

Known as the ATA Carnet, this international customs document functions as a “passport for goods,” streamlining customs clearance across multiple countries without incurring duties or taxes. Accepted by a network of 81 customs administrations worldwide, the ATA Carnet is a cornerstone of the DOF’s efforts to improve the Philippines’ business climate.

“With this system, we now offer them [Filipino businesses] costeffective access to international trade exhibitions that would have otherwise been prohibitive for them to attend in the past,” DOF Revenue Operations Group (ROG) Undersecretary Charlito Martin Mendoza said.

“This will increase export and import activities, enhance our trade balance, drive job creation and attract foreign investments,” he said.

Almost every industry with temporary importation can benefit from the use of ATA Carnets such as commercial samples, professional equipment, and goods for display at exhibitions, fairs and meetings, Mendoza said.

Foreign market access will be particularly beneficial to micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs), allowing them to join trade shows and sell their products on the spot.

Apart from reducing the costs of exporting goods, the ATA Carnet promotes trade efficiency as it simplifies customs procedures through a single document for all customs transactions, and makes arrangements for entry to many countries in advance at a predetermined cost.

Bangko Sentral expects slower growth in 2nd half

ELEVATED interest rates may contribute to slower gross domestic product (GDP) expansion in the second half of 2024.

This was based on the highlights of the Monetary Board’s policy meeting on June 27, 2024 when it decided to keep the overnight borrowing rate at 6.5 percent. The Monetary Board is the policymaking body of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

“Domestic growth prospects remain intact for 2024 and 2025, based on BSP staff estimates. GDP growth may decelerate in second half of 2024 due partly to positive real interest rates, following the BSP’s tightening cycle,

and subsequently pick up in 2025. This outlook is consistent with the negative output gap in 2024 to 2025 amid tight financial conditions,” the BSP said.

Data from the Philippines Statistics Authority show that the economy grew 5.7 percent in the first quarter of 2024, below the government’s target range of 6.0 percent to 7.0 percent. It will release the second-quarter GDP data in August. The BSP kept the interest rates steady as a survey of external

forecasters for June 2024 showed inflation expectations staying near the upper end of the target range of 2 percent to 4 percent for 2024, while those for 2025 to 2026 eased further toward the midpoint of the target range. The mean inflation forecast for 2024 remained at 3.7 percent, relative to the results of the May 2024 survey round. For 2025 and 2026, the mean inflation forecasts declined to 3.4 percent from 3.5 percent and 3.3 percent from 3.4 percent, respectively. Analysts expect within-target inflation over the policy horizon, although upside risks continue to dominate their outlook owing to supply-side pressures and potential second-round effects, the BSP said.

FORMER Ilocos Sur Governor Luis Singson said he is waiting for the Department of Transportation’s approval to start the mass production of electric vehicles that will replace traditional jeepneys under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.

“I am just waiting for the go signal. It should come from the President or Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista. We are just waiting for their approval. Then we can proceed to mass production,” Singson told Manila Standard editors. Singson said his LCS Group teamed up with the E-Mobility Group of Korea to design the prototype of electric vehicles. “The prototype has 22 seats and can accommodate an additional six standing passengers,”

BIR

BUREAU of Internal Revenue (BIR)

Commissioner Romeo Lumagui Jr. said Friday he will release an order extending the submission, filing, and/or payment of taxes because of the inclement weather suffered by taxpayers until July 31, 2024. He said the extension was in recognition of the hardships suffered by taxpayers as a result of the lack of transportation, electricity, internet service and other basic services following the onslaught of Typhoon Carina and the southwest monsoon. Government offices, including that of the BIR, were also closed due to inclement weather. The extension will cover affected areas. “In

“The prototype is here. I invited transport groups and we tested it. It is air-conditioned and has 120-kilowatt power, higher than the 35 kW of other e-vehicles. It is powerful enough to climb the EDSA flyover. It does not move back when it stops at a steep elevation,” he said.

The 83-year-old businessman and former politician said he does not intend to profit from the electric jeepney venture but wants to help the government and the transport sector. He also offers financing to transport cooperatives with no down payment required for acquiring the vehicles.

“It is assistance, not business. While other e-vehicles cost P2.4 million, P2.8 million, or even P4 million, we will give it for only P1.2 million, or

just half the price,” Singson said. Saying he would partially subsidize the cost of the vehicles, Singson asked for the government’s assistance in providing a production site in either Clark Freeport or Subic Bay Freeport. “Otherwise, I would have to spend for land, warehouse, which is an additional cost,” he said.

“We could produce 500 to 600 electric jeeps monthly. But we need millions to replace old jeepneys all over the country,” he said.

Singson’s LCS Group also distributes electric vehicles for private ownership in the Philippines. Legado Motors Inc. (LMI), a company under the LCS Group, is the official distributor of electric vehicles manufactured by Dongfeng Motors in China. Roderick T. dela Cruz

THE Department of Transportation (DOTr) said Friday it is preparing a feasibility study for the SubicClark-Manila-Batangas Railway, a key component of the government’s plan to establish a logistics corridor in Luzon.

DOTr Undersecretary Timothy John Batan said the department began preparing the rail system’s feasibility study after President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. mentioned in his recent State of the Nation Address his trilateral summit with United States President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida in April 2024.

“We are currently preparing the feasibility study for this SubicClark-Manila-Batangas Rail,” Batan said.

He said the massive project would be a joint initiative with the US, Sweden and Asian Development Bank.

Batan said the proposed railway would connect Subic Port with Clark International Airport (CRK), Port of Manila and Port of Batangas. Batan said the earlier proposal for Subic-Clark Railway fell through due to financial acquisition issues, leading to a new study of a longer Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas line.

“The logistics corridor that we are building will not only be able to connect our port in Subic and our airport in Clark, we will also reach the Port of Manila and the Port of Batangas,” he said. Darwin G. Amojelar

Please take care of your families and loved ones, we will move the deadline to July 31,” Lumagui said.

The dues that will be moved to July 31, 2024 include the submission of quarterly summary list of sales/purchases/ importations by a VAT registered taxpayernon-eFPS filer for the quarter ending June 30, 2024; and submission of sworn statement of manufacturer’s or importer’s volume of sales of each particular brand of alcohol products, tobacco products and sweetened beverage products for the quarter ending June 30, 2024

PH stocks edge higher, track other Asian markets

PHILIPPINE stocks closed the week on a positive note, tracking other Asian markets.

The Philippine Stock Exchange index rose 55.74 points, or 0.84 percent, to close at 6,726.01, while the wider all-shares index added 23.29 points, or 0.65 percent, to settle at 3,630.10.

Analysts said the market showed a strong rebound after hitting the 6,600 support level, indicating positive sentiment among investors.

Nicholas Mapa, the chief economist and market strategist under the market strategy and advisory section of Metropolitan Bank & Trust Co., said signs such as slower inflation and the projected one-two-three rate cut punch before year-end could help the Philippines deliver a “good” growth rate in 2024.

Among the sectoral indices, only mining and oil ended in the red, declining by 0.56 percent. Property advanced by 1.36 percent, followed by industrial which rose 0.94 percent. Holdings firms added 0.75 percent, while financials and services went up by 0.57 percent and 0.44 percent, respectively.

Value traded was at P3.15 billion as investors continued to stay on the sidelines while waiting for more positive economic data.

Meanwhile, Asian investors fought back Friday after a tech-fueled selloff, taking heart from forecast-beating US growth data that indicated the economy was still in rude health, but did not dent hopes for an interest rate cut.

The positive performance came despite more losses on Wall Street, where the so-called “Magnificent Seven” heavyweights -- which have been key to this year’s markets surge -- suffered more selling as investors swapped out of them and into cheaper, small caps.

However, Taipei had a rough start as it reopened after being closed for two days by a typhoon, with chip giants including TSMC tanking as traders played catch-up with the recent rout, which was sparked by disappointing earnings from Tesla and Google-parent Alphabet. With AFP

FPIP’s four Japanese locators plan to hire 1,400 new workers

Four Japanese manufacturing companies operating within the First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) in Sto. Tomas, Batangas announced plans to hire over 1,400 new employees.

Brother Industries (Philippines) Inc., Canon Business Machines (Philippines) Inc., Ibiden (Philippines) Inc. and Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata, Inc. are looking to fill a variety of positions including engineers,

accountants, nurses, human resource personnel and other office-based workers.

The announcement was made during the recent “Sulong Buhay Job Fair,” a joint initiative by FPIP, the lo-

cal government of Santo Tomas City and other stakeholders.

FPIP external relations manager John Carlo Navalta said 457 job applicants have already passed the initial screening process, leaving hundreds of positions still available.

Santo Tomas City Mayor Arth Jhun Aguilar Marasigan said the hiring initiative would boost local workforce and the attractiveness of FPIP as an investment destination.

“This is a great opportunity for our

residents to find good jobs right here in our city,” he said. The collaboration between FPIP, its locators and local educational institutions like the Polytechnic University of the Philippines (PUP) was highlighted as a key factor in the success of the job fair.

FPIP, a joint venture between First Philippine Holdings Corp. and Sumitomo Corporation of Japan, is a major economic driver in the region, providing employment for nearly 70,000 Filipinos.

PNOC to test vertical axis wind turbines in Napocor’s SPUG sites

STATE-RUN Philippine National Oil Co. (PNOC) and National Power Corp. (NPC) on Friday signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to test solar and wind hybrid systems utilizing vertical axis wind turbines in the Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) areas.

PNOC said Friday the initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable energy solutions for isolated and off-grid regions in the Philippines.

“We consider this a milestone because it fits with our strategy which is being a social enterprise. We want to introduce energy projects, especially new technologies in marginal areas,” PNOC president and chief executive Oliver Butalid said. Butalid and NPC president Fer-

nando Martin Roxas signed the MOU at the Energy Center in Bonifacio Global City.

The partnership underscores the commitment of both organizations to innovate and reduce dependence on diesel fuel, particularly in off-grid areas. It aims to install test units of the hybrid system in select NPC-SPUG sites to evaluate their performance and feasibility.

The project includes integrating necessary instruments and accessories into existing diesel plants, with a focus on areas with favorable wind conditions.

Under the agreement, NPC will propose potential sites for the technical demonstration, review the project design for compliance with standards, facilitate the integration of the hybrid system into their existing infrastructure and dispatch the generated electricity.

Midea Inc., the group reached P7.7 billion in net sales with a growth of 46 percent.

“CIC achieved a significant milestone in the second quarter. We have surpassed our pre-pandemic performance and set new record for sales and earnings. The hot weather worked in our favor, allowing us to solidify our market position and demonstrate the effectiveness of our strategies, delivering on our commitments to stakeholders,” said CIC chief finance and operating officer Rajan Komarasu.

The group’s consumer business

division recorded P4.6 billion in net sales, a 42 percent year-on-year increase, driven by growth across all product categories. Sales of air-conditioning products rose 43 percent on increased demand during the hot summer, while refrigeration product sales grew 44 percent, fueled by strong demand for light commercial products and no-frost refrigerators.

Laundry product sales recovered in the second quarter, posting a 49-percent increase compared to last year’s level. Jenniffer B. Austria

Mizuho Bank commits to woo more Japanese investments

THE Board of Investments (BOI) and Mizuho Bank, Ltd. renewed their partnership to attract more Japanese investments to the Philippines through a memorandum of understanding (MOU).

The collaboration aims to strengthen economic ties between the two countries and further promote investment opportunities for Japanese businesses in the Philippines.

BOI managing director Ceferino Rodolfo and Mizuho Bank Manila Branch general manager Masaaki Wada signed the agreement on July 16, 2024 at the BOI office in Makati City.

“BOI aims to continue partnering with Mizuho Bank in investment promotion initiatives, exchange of information support, and in conducting fruitful meetings not just in Japan but also in the Philippines,” Rodolfo said. He said one of the recent highlights of the partnership was the entry of Nitori Holdings Co. Ltd. (Nitori), Japan’s largest furniture and home furnishing chain, into the Philippine market.

Nitori opened its first store in Taguig City in April 2024 and plans to open more stores within the year.

Rodolfo also acknowledged Mizuho Bank’s role in organizing investment promotion missions to Japan, highlighting the quality leads and one-on-one meetings arranged for the BOI during these missions.

STEAG State Power Inc. operates the Mindanao coal plant, which was contracted under a build-operatetransfer concession until 2031, after which the asset would transfer to PSALM. The asset still has a remaining operational life of 15 to 20 years.

PSALM manages the assets and liabilities previously owned by National Power Corp.

The government is initially looking at retiring or repurposing the Mindanao coal plant by 2026 at a cost of $476 million.

The Department of Energy earlier

said it planned to use the $500-million funding recently approved by the Climate Investment Funds (CIF) for the Mindanao coal-fired power plant.

The DOE was also looking at including the Mindanao coal plant in the ADB energy transition mechanism (ETM). Another option is “potential bundling with assets needed for the replacement of power with clean energy for promoting energy transition.”

The DOE said PSALM, the offtaker of CFPP’s power supply, has the option to pre-terminate the BOT as early as 2026, for an agreed termination pay-out.

DOF moves swiftly to aid super typhoon, flood victims

THE Department of Finance (DOF) and government financial institutions (GFIs) said they swiftly implemented measures to help Filipinos affected by Typhoon Carina and expedite the recovery process.

“I assure the Filipino people that the DOF and the GFIs are one with you. We are doing everything we can to make sure that we have immediate funding, as well as safety measures in place to help everyone recover from this calamity. Together, we will quickly rebuild and regain what we have lost,” Finance Secretary Ralph Recto said.

The DOF announced that it was ready to tap $500 million of standby credit line that would allow the government to rapidly deliver critical services like healthcare, food and shelter to those affected by the typhoon and fund post-disaster emergency response, recoveryand reconstruction efforts.

As part of the country’s Disaster Risk Finance strategy, the Bureau of the Treasury (BTr) will file a claim under the National Indemnity Insurance Program (NIIP) for the damages sustained by 45 public schools across eight regions worth at least P308.5 million.

Once a payout is confirmed, the Department of Education (DepEd) will be able to use the funds for the repair and reconstruction of the said schools.

Credit knowledge in PH on the rise—TransUnion

CREDIT knowledge in the Philippines improved in the second quarter of 2024, according to TransUnion, a credit reporting agency.

This was based on the second annual Credit Perception Index (CPI), which examines Filipino perceptions towards credit, factors contributing to those perceptions and broader implications for the nation as a whole.

The CPI in the Philippines stands at 69 out of 100, an increase of four points from last year.

“The improved 2024 CPI score of the Filipino population is a product of collective efforts to foster greater financial literacy and inclusion. Despite financial uncertainties, we are delighted to see Fil-

ipinos proactively seeking ways to better manage their finances and unlock economic opportunities through responsible credit use,” said Weihan Su, principal of research and consulting for Asia Pacific at TransUnion.

“However, disparities in credit knowledge still exist. Continued efforts are needed to further expand access and services to unbanked Filipinos, enabling them to realize the benefits of being financially included,” he said. About 70 percent of Filipinos have a general understanding of the concept of credit. Across the credit products, Filipinos are most knowledgeable about installment payments (82 percent), followed by credit cards (76 percent), and buy now pay later (BNPL) services (74 percent).

SteelAsia offers to buy jeepney scraps

STEELASIA Manufacturing Corp., one of the country’s largest privately-held companies, is in talks with the Land Transportation Office (LTO) and transport cooperatives to acquire the steel components from thousands of old jeepneys to be replaced under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program.

The company, the nation’s biggest producer of reinforcing bars, said it could easily process at least 250,000 metric tons of old jeepney parts into steel products within a few months. The offer comes amid concerns that the PUV Modernization Program would create a massive stockpile of

steel waste. SteelAsia chief operating officer Rafael Hidalgo said, however, steel is infinitely reusable and recyclable.

“We could turn scrap metal into billets, which are the raw material for rebars. It’s part of the circular economy,” Hidalgo told newspaper editors

HDF Energy of France plans to invest $1.5b in 15 hydrogen projects in PH

HYDROGÈNE de France (HDF Ener-

gy), a leading force in large-scale green hydrogen infrastructure and high-power fuel cell manufacturing, disclosed its plan to invest $1.5 billion in hydrogen power facilities in the Philippines.

HDF Energy Philippines Holdings Inc. president Mathieu Geze said the company is committed to establishing 15 projects in the Philippines, with ten of them planned for implementation in Mindanao.

HDF Energy also signed a joint memorandum of understanding with the Department of Energy (DoE) and the Mindanao Development Authority (MinDA) to drive research and development in efficient technologies for harnessing renewable energy sources and locally produced green hydrogen for sustainable application.

Building on the success of previous collaborations with MinDA and the National Power Corp. (NPC) in 2023, the new MoU marks a milestone in the

effort to decarbonize the Philippines’ power sector as part of a comprehensive energy transition strategy.

Under the agreement, HDF Energy, together with the DoE and MinDA, would jointly invest in renewable energy technologies, with a particular emphasis on hydrogen-based solutions.

The partnership is expected to accelerate the deployment of Renewstable multi-megawatt hydrogen power plants.

Renewstable presents a green alternative to conventional diesel fuel power plants by utilizing solely solar or wind energy and water to generate electricity, mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and noise pollution.

Its distinctive feature lies in its ability to provide clean, baseload non-intermittent power, day and night, by combining an intermittent renewable energy source with substantial on-site energy storage in the form of green hydrogen.

SteelAsia recently signed a memorandum of understanding with Ayala Land Inc. (ALI) and Makati Development Corp. (MDC) to supply rebars made from recycled materials as part of the companies’ sustainability efforts.

The company has six manufacturing plants nationwide and plans to open four more by 2027. Its Calaca, Batangas facility manufactures rebars and can produce billets from scrap metal.

Recycled steel accounts for 16 percent of the company’s raw material needs. SteelAsia imports the rest as

billets from other countries.

The company also has plants in Meycauayan, Bulacan; Carcar and Compostela in Cebu; Davao City; and Villanueva, Misamis Oriental. It will build facilities in Lemery, Batangas to produce steel beams; a 32-hectare rebar plant in Candelaria, Quezon that could employ 1,500 workers; and a rebar and wire rod plant in Concepcion, Tarlac by 2027.

Hidalgo said the Concepcion plants would provide a local source of wire rods, which can be used to make more than 100 products including nails, screws, bolts, springs and barbed wire.

Asia-Pacific sovereign ratings outlook hinges on policy choices, heopolitics

SOVEREIGN credit trends in AsiaPacific were little changed in the first half of 2024, with only one rating action in the period.

S&P Global Ratings in late May revised the outlook on India to positive from stable. The change reflected our view that policy settings in India will sustain long-term economic growth, improving the government’s fiscal and debt metrics.

as it seeks to tame soaring price rises. Prices have risen fast since Moscow launched its full-scale offensive in Ukraine in February 2022, as massive government spending and skyrocketing wages have pushed up demand across the economy.

“Inflation has accelerated and is running substantially above the Bank of Russia’s April forecast,” the regulator said in a statement. The rate was previously at 16 percent.

S&P Global Ratings credit analyst

Kim Eng Tan in a report titled, “AsiaPacific Sovereign Rating Trends Midyear 2024: Fiscal Strains Rise.”

“By affecting volatility in the commodity and financial markets, such a development could renew the burden on external and fiscal metrics on regional sovereigns,” Tan said.

“A worsening of the conflict in Ukraine or that of the Middle East remains an important risk to sovereign outlooks in the Asia-Pacific,” said

“A sudden deterioration in U.S.China tensions is another risk to sovereign ratings in Asia-Pacific. In the runup to the U.S. presidential election in November, accidental contacts between the countries’ armed forces in the Pacific have a higher chance of causing political and economic damage. This could in turn affect regional sovereign credit metrics,” said Tan.

The stable outlooks on most longterm foreign-currency sovereign rat-

ings in the region (18 out of 21 ratings in Asia-Pacific) suggest there will be few changes in the next year or so.

“We expect economic and financial conditions to allow us to maintain ratings on most sovereigns in AsiaPacific in the next one to two years,” it said.

The absence of major economic or financial surprises has underpinned sovereign rating stability so far in 2024.

PAGCOR personnel brave floods to help typhoon-affected communities in Luzon

VOLUNTEER teams from the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corp. (PAGCOR) brought relief packs to communities affected by heavy downpour and massive flooding in Metro Manila and nearby provinces Wednesday.

Classes and government work were suspended on Wednesday and Thursday due to the widespread flooding.

“Even at the height of the flooding, and even before the President ordered government agencies to provide assistance to affected communities, PAGCOR employees already went to action to help those in need,” PAGCOR chairman and chief executive Alejandro Tengco said.

The PAGCOR chief said that since July 24, the agency delivered more

than 21,000 food and non-food relief packs for thousands of affected families.

“After the heavy rains subsided and it was safe to do so, we started bringing immediate aid to flooded communities in Caloocan City on Wednesday, followed by relief operations in Valenzuela, Malabon and Malolos, Bulacan the next day,” he said.

Tengco said PAGCOR was scheduled to distribute relief goods to the cities of Marikina and Navotas on Friday and the affected towns in Bulacan like Calumpit and Bulakan which were submerged in floodwater.

“It has been second nature to PAGCOR to immediately respond to the needs of affected communities in times of disasters,” he said.

“The growth of domestic demand continues to significantly outpace the ability to expand the supply of goods and services. In order for inflation to begin to decline again, additional tightening of monetary policy is required,” it added.

The bank also revised up its inflation forecast for 2024 to 6.5 percent to 7 percent. AFP

ZF to cut 14,000 jobs

BERLIN—German car parts manufacturer ZF said Friday it would cut up to a quarter of jobs in Germany, as the switch to electric vehicles puts pressure on the sector.

“The number of employees in Germany is to be successively reduced by 11,000 to 14,000 from the current level of around 54,000 by 2028,” ZF said in a statement. The decision to significantly reduce the size of its domestic workforce was needed to “respond to the changes in the mobility sector, particularly in the field of electromobility”, ZF said.

IGLESIA NI CRISTO

110TH

A legacy of faith: Iglesia Ni Cristo marks 110th anniversary

THE Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) is a Christian denomination founded in the Philippines in 1914. It’s a rapidly growing church with a unique theology, emphasizing a single, supreme God and the sole authority of its leadership. The INC became a significant force in Filipino society, boasting of millions of members and a strong presence nationwide.

INC provides a strong sense of community, offering social services, educational institutions, and a distinct cultural identity. This year, the church will celebrate its 110th anniversary, a testament to its community’s steadfast faith.

ESTABLISHED IN FAITH

Founded in 1914, with its first congregation in Punta, Santa Ana, Manila, INC, translating to “Church of Christ,” is a cornerstone of Filipino faith and a global religious force. Its story, woven with charismatic leadership and distinct beliefs, offers a glimpse into a church unlike many others.

The church’s founder, Felix Manalo, established the INC after a period of intense religious exploration.

World War II and its aftermath proved to be a period of significant growth for the INC. As the Philippines rebuilt, the church experienced a surge in membership fueled by a national religious revival. The INC’s strong sense of community and emphasis on education and social welfare provided stability and support during a turbulent time.

Following the death of Felix Manalo in 1963, the INC leadership transitioned to his son, Eraño Manalo. Under his guidance, the church expanded internationally, establishing congregations across North America, Europe, Asia, and Africa. The INC’s global reach solidified its position as one of the world’s fastest-growing Christian denominations.

The INC follows a strict moral code, emphasizing upright living and adherence to biblical teachings. It translates to practices like abstaining from vices like smoking and alcohol and avoiding holidays deemed to have pagan origins, like Christmas and Easter. Observance of the Sabbath on the seventh day, Saturday, is another vital tenet.

Moreover, for the INC, worshipping God is not just a religious practice; it’s considered the very purpose of human existence. The church emphasizes a unique perspective on worship, focusing on devotion’s internal and external aspects.

The INC believes worship should be done “in spirit and in truth” (John 4:2324).

GUIDED BY THE WORD OF GOD

The INC isn’t just a religious organization, it’s a community guided by a clearly defined vision and mission. Their vision, as outlined in Ephesians 5:27, is to be a “radiant church, without stain or wrinkle or any other blemish, but holy and blameless.” It translates to a church striving for perfect unity in faith and practice, where members are devoted to a holy life based on authentic Christian teachings. Its mission statement reflects a twopronged approach. The first aspect emphasizes evangelism, fulfilling Christ’s command to “go into all the world and proclaim the gospel to the whole creation” (Mark 16:15-16). It encourages its members to share the gospel globally, believing that salvation comes through faith and baptism.

Meanwhile, the second facet of their mission focuses on nurturing their existing members. They achieve this through “constant and effective religious instruction,” as stated in Colossians 1:28. This translates to ongoing education and guidance to help members grow spiritually and live a righteous life, according to the INC’s interpretation of the Bible. Ultimately, the INC aspires to present its members “perfect in Christ.”

Essentially, the INC envisions a unified and faithful church with a mission to spread the gospel and guide its members toward spiritual maturity. These goals are central to everything the INC does, shaping its approach to worship, community building, and outreach.

LOOKING INSIDE

THE TEACHINGS OF INC

Central to the INC’s theology is a strict adherence to the Bible, seen as the sole source of God’s teachings. They believe in one God, the Father, rejecting the concept of the Holy Trinity. Jesus Christ is God’s chosen son, the divine messenger, and the path to salvation. Unlike some Christian denominations, the INC emphasizes Christ’s humanity, denying his divinity.

“In spirit” signifies worshipping God with sincerity and devotion, acknowledging Him as the creator, and recognizing our dependence. Their congregation offers prayers with a pure heart and a deep understanding of God’s teachings. Additionally, the “in truth” aspect signifies obedience to God’s commandments in the Bible. The INC strictly adheres to its literal interpretation of scripture, emphasizing following God’s word.

Worship services involve studying scripture, singing hymns that praise God, and offering contributions – all seen as ways to express obedience and devotion.

INC’s unique approach to worship has fostered a strong sense of community within the INC. Members are encouraged to participate actively in worship services, contributing their voices and resources. The emphasis on scriptural accuracy fosters a unified understanding of God’s will among members, further strengthening the INC’s identity.

FORGED IN UNITY

The INC strongly emphasizes a concept known as “Christian Unity.” This belief goes beyond simple interdenominational cooperation and delves into a core tenet of their faith.

But what exactly does Christian Unity mean for the INC?

It interprets passages from the Bible, like John 17:21-23, to advocate for a singular, unified church established by God. They believe divisions and denominations are not part of God’s plan and represent a departure from the original, united church founded by Jesus Christ.

Christian Unity manifests in several ways within the INC. Services occur according to a standard across all INC congregations worldwide, fostering a sense of shared practice. Additionally, the INC discourages internal factions or divisions, promoting a united front in their worship and mission.

The church continues to make strides for its local and global community. Recent years have seen the dedication of new houses of worship in North America and Europe, solidifying the INC’s footprint across continents. This expansion reflects the Church’s commitment to spreading its faith and serving its global membership.

As the INC prepares to celebrate its 110th anniversary, its legacy as a homegrown Filipino faith movement remains undeniable. It’s a church that continues to evolve, navigating the complexities of a globalized world, while holding fast to its core beliefs. The anniversary serves as a celebration and a testament to the enduring power of faith and community that the INC has fostered for over a century.

PH is ‘fastest emerging startup hub in the world’—experts

THE Philippine startup ecosystem is rapidly gaining traction, positioning itself as the fastest emerging startup hub in the world after Manila’s startup ecosystem recently doubled its valuation, according to experts at a recent forum led by startup incubator Brainsparks.

The forum, which gathered key stakeholders from the startup and venture capital communities as well as the government, underscored the vital elements driving this robust growth and the promising future of the country’s startup landscape.

“The growth we are seeing in the Philippine startup ecosystem is encouraging for both startups and venture capitalists. There are immense opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship here. Our startups are becoming more competitive in the region,” Brainsparks Co-Founder Artie Lopez said.

In fact, according to startup ecosystem platform e27 Co-Founder Thaddeus Koh, the Philippines is becoming the prime market for startups, emphasizing its potential and funding opportunities.

“The Philippines is a thriving hub for tech companies. Its strategic location in Southeast Asia, coupled with a highly skilled and affordable workforce, grants access to a massive regional market and acts as a gateway to neighboring economies,” he said.

Koh explained that with a rapidly growing population and a government that actively promotes foreign investments through sound policies, the Philippines has a “vast potential consumer base for business.”

“The Philippine startup ecosystem is now the fastest emerging startup hub in the world,” he said. “We need to showcase the Philippines in the region.”

According to the recently published 2024 Global Startup Ecosystem Report, Manila’s startup ecosystem was

valued at $6.4 billion, almost double the $3.5 billion valuation the year prior.

“This growth is a testament to the hard work and innovation of our startups through the support of the local startup community, and we are committed to supporting this journey,” Department of Trade and Industry Division Chief of Innovation and Collaboration Division Karl Pacolor said.

He also highlighted the support from the government in nurturing the startup ecosystem, citing the Innovative Startup Act (ISA), which mandates the government to support startup companies and businesses in the Philippines.

“With the recent growth that we’ve seen in the startup scene in Manila, the government is cognizant of the importance of its role in sustaining this growth. We are employing a wholeof-government approach to ensure we will continue to tread on an upward trajectory. Part of that goal is to ensure

that the momentum of the Philippine startup ecosystem is not just sustained but also expanded to other parts of the country,” Pacolor said.

The Philippines has been making significant strides in innovation, recording steady rises in the Global Innovation Index. In 2023, it ranked 56th, a jump from 100th in 2014.

According to the Philippine Development Plan, the country should break into the top 50 by 2028.

“We have plans to bring startup growth beyond Manila, creating a more inclusive and widespread startup culture throughout the Philippines,” Pacolor said.

Echelon to put spotlight in PH

As the Philippines establishes itself as the fastest emerging startup hub in Southeast Asia, Brainsparks and e27 partnered to introduce the first ever Philippine edition of Echelon, a tech and startup business conference.

Scheduled for 26-27 September 2024 at Level 2, SMX Convention Center Manila, Echelon Philippines 2024 will unite the collective expertise of the Philippines and Southeast Asia’s startup leaders, visionary entrepreneurs, and forward-thinking investors to drive the next phase of growth in the country’s startup ecosystem.

Echelon Philippines 2024 will feature showcases and business matchings that foster regional partnerships, facilitating funding and investments crucial for startup growth.

The conference will share insights from thriving and emerging sectors, revealing new opportunities and inspiring participants to explore untapped markets.

Echelon Philippines 2024 will also focus on nurturing new talent entering existing markets, ensuring a steady influx of fresh ideas and perspectives to fuel sustained growth.

Second Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival kicks

off

THE highly anticipated second year of the Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival has officially begun, following its introductory press conference held on July 23 at the Gateway Cineplex 18. Building on the success of last year’s historic debut, this year’s festival promises to offer filmmakers across the country even greater opportunities to showcase their talent, creativity, and dedication to the craft.

emphasized that, as in the previous year, this year’s Puregold CinePanalo seeks film entries that capture the indomitable spirit of the Filipino through uplifting and inspiring “panalo stories.”

Filmmakers must submit a complete screenplay and other requirements by July 30 for full-length films or Aug. 15 for student shorts.

To encourage aspiring filmmakers to participate, a number of directors from last year’s event attended the press conference to share their experiences. Among them was Always Panalo Film awardee Carlo Obispo Best Picture winner Kurt Soberano, known for his film Under A Piaya Moon, sent a special video message encouraging filmmakers to submit their “panalo” stories.

Puregold is leveraging the success of the inaugural festival as a springboard for an even grander event this year. The 2025 Puregold CinePanalo features an increased funding pool, with seven full-length directors set to receive a production grant worth three million pesos (P 3,000,000) each, and twenty-five selected student short film directors receiving a grant of one hundred and fifty thousand pesos (P150,000) each. This year, seven full-length film grants will be awarded, surpassing last year’s six.

In addition to messages from full-length directors, five student directors shared their experiences to highlight the opportunities that Puregold CinePanalo can offer young aspiring filmmakers. These included Always Panalo Film awardee Jenievive Adame, Best Director winner Dizelle Masilungan, and regional filmmakers Marian Jayce Tiongzon and Joanah Demonteverde

The event was opened by Puregold’s Senior Marketing Manager, Ivy Piedad, who emphasized the importance of celebrating Filipino artistry and the spirit of Kwentong Panalo ng Buhay. She

who may not have access to the same resources as established directors.

“When we first launched Puregold CinePanalo, we envisioned it to champion Filipino stories, advocate for student filmmakers by providing them with a platform for their dream short films, and elevate the local film scene,” Piedad said.

She noted how the first Puregold CinePanalo brought to light the talents of several young, aspiring filmmakers, some of whom have continued to pursue their artistic dreams thanks to the competition.

“We saw the birth of promising talents, with several inspiring stories that came to life on the big screen. Fueled by last edition’s success, here

BINI vs. SB19: Fans debate on X over who paves the way for P-pop

THE members of New:ID, a new P-pop boy group, are starting their music career with the release of two digital tracks – their first step in introducing themselves and their music to fans. The group consists of Wilson, Macky, L, Thad, and Jom , who were contestants on the reality TV show Dream Maker . Despite not making it to the final lineup of winners, the New:ID members continued their training in South Korea for over a year, honing the skills and discipline required for the P-pop.

In 2023, New:ID debuted with their singles

“E.R.” and “Déjà Vu,” which introduced a dark, mysterious, and sexy style.

“Apart from being popular and well-known across the world, our main goil is to make

and share songs that are relatable to anyone. We want to make music that our fans can find comfort in, music that will make them feel that someone shares the same experience,” the band said.

New:ID is exploring various genres to forge deep connections with its listeners and achieve artistic growth. Their latest release includes two tracks, “Ghost” and “The Day We Meet Again,” now available on digital music streaming platforms. The music video for “Ghost” premiered on July 25.

New:ID is managed by MLD Entertainment, which also handles the careers of P-pop group Hori7on and South Korean girl group Lapillus.

FANS are having a heated word war on X about whether BINI or SB19 is leading the P-pop scene. With their success in promoting the popular genre, they have sparked fervent discussions among fans. One of the hottest topics on social media is the question: Who paved the way for the genre—SB19 or BINI?

The discussion began when veteran journalist Karen Davila made comments on the rise of P-pop during the closing spiel on TV Patrol Maganda du’n, ‘di ba, ang K-pop sikat sa buong mundo. Maganda, ‘yung BINI, silang magbubukas ng pintuan para [sa] P-pop ‘Pag sumikat sila, sisikat din ‘yung iba pang Pilipino,” said Davila.

While BLOOMs (BINI’s fans) echoed what the broadcaster pointed out, some fans raised their eyebrows sharing their sentiments that SB19 had been doing that ever since.

SB19’s fans (A’TINs) point to the group’s groundbreaking achievements, such as their

evidence of their pioneering role among P-pop groups. On the other hand, BINI, a promising girl group, has also made significant strides in the industry breaking records on music charts and streaming platforms.

Supporters of BINI contend that the group has played a crucial role in showcasing the power and versatility of female P-pop acts. With their upbeat songs and relatable lyrics, the eight-member group has connected with a wide audience, particularly among the younger generation.

P-pop traces back to the 1970s with the emergence of Pinoy pop, an early form that blended rock, folk, and ballads, often addressing social and political issues. However, the influence of musicians from around the globe has significantly shaped the modern P-pop sound.

Prominent new acts in P-pop include Alamat, VXON, 1ST.ONE, G22, KAIA, Dione, Hori7on, BGYO, MNL48, and NEW:ID are making their own ways to bring P-pop to the

world.
