HERE is no let-up in the “intimidation” tactics of Beijing in the West Philippine Sea, the Philippine Coast Guard said, noting that China Coast Guard’s massive ship, dubbed “The Monster,” also deployed a rigid-hull inflatable boat around Escoda Shoal.
“It is an act of intimidation on the part of the China Coast Guard,” PCG spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela said.
Despite the CCG-5901 staying just less than 800 yards or some 700 meters from the PCG’s BRP Teresa Magbanua at Escoda Shoal, Tarriela said Manila will
not withdraw its vessel.
“Regardless how many China Coast Guard vessels that they deploy there – regardless of whether it’s a People’s Liberation Army Navy vessel – the Philippine Coast Guard will not be intimidated not are we going to pull back and direct Teresa Magbanua to go back
to Palawan,” he said.
“With the clear guidance of our President and the intention of the commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard to maintain our presence in Escoda Shoal, we’re not going to pull out and we’re not going to be intimidated,” he added.
Beijing’s deployment of “The Monster” came a day after China agreed to deescalate maritime tensions with the Philippines during the 9th Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea (BCM) in Manila.
Former US Air Force officer Ray Powell said China’s deployment of its giant coast guard vessel is meant to project its force and maximize its leverage in the consultations.
“From a Chinese perspective,
it helps them to have more force projected and especially something large like the monster ship helps them to say, ‘We have you at a disadvantage so you should have to negotiate more on our terms,’” Powell told ABS-CBN News.
“China always places the first responsibility for the de-escalation on the other party. So, China has deployed its coast guard into the Philippine waters as a way of letting the Philippines know that it still claims jurisdiction and again they want to be able to negotiate on the de-escalation on terms favorable to China,” he added.
Tarriela said it is China that needs to de-escalate as it is also the one “escalating the tension” in the West Philippine Sea.

THE Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission said it has leads on who were possibly behind the alleged “leak” of the plan to raid the POGO hub in Porac, Pampanga.
“We already gathered leads in these past three days,” PAOCC spokesperson Winston Casio said in a press forum yesterday. Casio earlier floated the possibil-
ity of a possible leak after the Porac raid resulted only in the rescue of 158 foreign nationals, far below the estimated 1,000 foreigners working in the POGO hub. He said PAOCC will coordinate with other agencies involved in the POGO raid on Monday to discuss the leads the agency has gathered.
“We will give them the leads then we will allow the agencies to do the investigation,” Casio said. As this developed, Casio said
it is unlikely to have controversial Bamban Mayor Alice Guo as a state witness in the illegal activities of the POGO hub in her town unless she can name someone higher in the alleged crime.
Casio said Guo appears to be the primary culprit, which disqualifies her from becoming a state witness.
“Any state witness, for that matter, would have to be the least guilty in the entire conspiratorial chain in the commission of the crime,” Casio said.
“We’re not considering that option unless we can target someone higher up,” he added.
Guo faces a non-bailable trafficking charge at the Department of Justice, while the Office of the Solicitor General has petitioned to cancel her birth certificate after the National Bureau of Investigation confirmed the mayor and Chinese passport holder Guo Hua Ping have the same fingerprints.

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines should remain vigilant amid growing external regional threats, President Marcos said during his visit to the 11th Infantry Division at Camp Teodulfo Bautista in Sulu.
He said the government will create a task force with a maritime force and Navy component to enhance the Philippine Coast Guard’s presence and enforce maritime security.
“That’s what we’re going to do to make ourselves more secure, especially here in your area because I’m sure there are many instances where we have reports of ships passing by,” the President said.
“So, we just have to stay alert and keep an eye on everything that’s happening to make sure we monitor everything,” he added, noting AFP’s shift to external defense. He likewise called on the AFP to help ensure the holding of peaceful elections for the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) parliament next year.
“We must hold a peaceful election [next year]...It’s important that we make sure that members of the parliament are elected the right way,” the President said.
“There should be no terrorism or political violence. Those should be minimized,” he added. This will be the first time for the country to conduct parliamentary elections for the BARMM, which will coincide with the midterm legislative elections on May 12, 2025.
Mr. Marcos reminded the military that elections must be won in peace.
“Let us not sit on our laurel. Let us not become complacent because these are challenges that we will have to manage,” he said.
“That is all in the interest of peace. We do this because we want peace to continue in this area, in the southern Philippines. We do not want to see the kind of fighting that we saw many decades ago,” he said.

AN 88-year-old painting titled “Mango Harvesters” by renowned national artist Fernando Amorsolo was stolen from the Hofileña Museum in Silay, Negros Occidental.
The broad daylight heist occurred at around 10 a.m. on July 3, the museum said.
According to Lt. Col. Anthony Mark Darroca, head of the Silay City Municipal Police, a tour guide noticed the painting was missing during a routine inspection of the premises and reported the incident at around 11 a.m. on the same day.
CCTV footage from the museum revealed the suspects entered the museum posing as tourists.
The video showed the thiefs – a man and a woman – discreetly removing the painting while blending in with other visitors and exploiting blind spots within the museum.
Darroca said the police have identified a person of interest with a history of theft and similar offenses.
“We ask anyone who sees this painting or hears about someone trying to sell it to immediately inform the police or report it to any nearby police station,” Darroca said.
The arts and culture community in Negros Occidental also called for help to locate the painting, a 12x18 masterpiece painted by Amorsolo in 1936.
“Let us all help to find the stolen Amorsolo from the Hofileña Heritage House,” the Art Association of Bacolod-Negros, headed by Tey Sevilleno, said in a Facebook post on Saturday. Solomon Lopez-Locsin, chair of the Negros Occidental Historical Council, said those who have information or sighting of the artwork can contact the Silay Component City Police Station at 0998-5987443 or 0998-9674432.

SCENE of the Crime Operatives (SOCO) on Saturday morning found the remains of missing Kapampangan beauty queen Geneva Lopez and her Israeli fiancé Yitzhak Cohen in Tarlac.
The decomposed bodies were unearthed in a remote quarry site in Barangay Sta. Lucia in Capas, Tarlac. The remains were discovered after a key witness came forward with information about the case.
According to Capas Municipal
Police Station chief Police Lt. Col. Librado Manarang Jr., the relatives of Lopez and Cohen have since identified the bodies. Further investigation will be conducted, such as autopsies, DNA testing, and analysis. Missing for two weeks, Lopez
and Cohen were last seen in an SUV that was later discovered burned and abandoned in Capas on June 22.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) has since identified seven persons of interest in the case. This refers to individuals who are not yet considered suspects but whom authorities are observing in relation to an investigation.
The Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) earlier apprehended persons of interest allegedly involved in the
disappearance of the couple in Tarlac.
These include two former police officers, a real estate middleman, and another individual.
Authorities said they recovered firearms, ammunition, and a hand grenade in the operation involving the aforementioned persons of interest.
This was part of the government’s Oplan Paglalansag Omega, or the state campaign against private armed groups and loose firearms.

IN A continued crackdown on uncertified products, the Department of Trade and Industry’s (DTI) Task Force Kalasag confiscated 9,428 non-compliant items, primarily household appliances, worth P9.3 million during an inspection of two warehouses in Plaridel on July 3, 2024.
The operation, conducted in collaboration with Congressman Erwin Tulfo’s office and the Plaridel Business Permit and Licensing Office (BPLO), was initiated in response to a consumer complaint.
The first warehouse yielded 656 unbranded and uncertified items,
including helmets, visors, electric rice cookers, LED lamps, extension cords, and food mixers, valued at P638,852.
A significantly larger haul came from the second warehouse, where 8,772 non-compliant electric rice cookers, induction cookers, ovens, blenders, washing machines, fans, and multi-cookers worth P8.7 million were seized.
These products lacked the mandatory Philippine Standard (PS) Marks and Import Commodity Clearance (ICC) Stickers, violating Republic Act No. 4109 (Products Standards Law) and Department Administrative Order No. 02, Series of 2007.
“The DTI is unwavering in its com-
DEPARTMENT of Energy (DOE) Secretary Raphael Lotilla emphasized the DOE’s support for tapping into existing coal capacity to sustain the country’s economic growth.
The Philippines currently enjoys the title of ASEAN’s fastest-growing economy in 2023 and is expected to sustain this through 2024.
Central Visayas and at its heart Metro Cebu leads all of the Philippines’17 regions registering a 7.3 growth rate in 2023.
At a recent forum, Lotilla said the Philippines still possesses over 6,300 megawatts of dependable coal capacity aged 10 years or younger. “Maximizing the use of existing energy infrastructure avoids imposing additional cost burdens on both the economy and consumers,” said Lotilla. Cebu is largely dependent on importing
electricity from neighboring islands such as Panay and Leyte supplemented by Luzon.
Up to around 60% of its electricity comes from plants outside Metro Cebu.
In the wake of the Panay Blackout earlier this year, and amidst a shortfall projected for Cebu in the next 3 to 4 years, Cebu Governor Gwendolyn emphasized the need to build baseload power plants in Cebu to meet the province’s demand for reliable power to support its rapidly growing economy and population.
Cebu’s rapid development is driven by its strategic location, robust infrastructure, thriving tourism industry, and burgeoning business process outsourcing (BPO) sector. This growth significantly contributes to the national GDP (Gross Domestic Product), creating jobs, attracting foreign investment, and promoting regional prosperity.
mitment to expanding enforcement operations nationwide to ensure no product endangering consumer safety remains on the market,” said DTI secretary Alfredo Pascual.
DTI Fair Trade Group assistant secretary Agaton Teodoro Uvero emphasized the importance of consumer vigilance.
“It is crucial to check for verified quality and safety markings. Untested household appliances pose serious electrical and fire hazards. Consumers should not be lured by low prices that could result in costly or even fatal injuries,” he said.
The establishments have received notices of violation and must provide an explanation within
48 hours. Failure to do so will lead to formal charges and potential penalties.
This operation follows a similar seizure last month in Valenzuela City, where 9,874 non-compliant appliances worth P7.8 million were confiscated. Since its launch in April 2024, Task Force Kalasag has removed a total of 21,829 uncertified household appliances valued at P18.1 million from the market. The Task Force was established to protect consumers and legitimate businesses, uphold product safety and quality standards, and ensure the availability of essential goods at reasonable prices, particularly during emergencies.

COTABATO CITY—Maguindanao del Norte is shaping up to become the most secured and investmentconducive province in Mindanao, as laid down in development foresight that Governor Abdulraof Macacua elaborated during his first State of the Province address on Thursday afternoon. Macacua assured the national government as well as the leadership of the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) that the new province’s development goals as drawn in its 7-point Executive Agenda are aligned with the 12-Point Priority Agenda of the BARMM government lead by Chief Minister Ahod Balawag Ebrahim.
“GobSam”, as the governor is fondly called among his constituents, presented a line of accomplishments longer by the province’s relatively shorter period of existence, and notwithstanding intervening legal challenges, he said.

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr.
on Saturday congratulated the United Kingdom’s (UK) Labour Party and new Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
“On behalf of the Philippines, I extend my warmest congratulations to the Labour Party and (Starmer),” Marcos said. “We wish the new government success and look forward to further strengthening our deep and longstanding ties.”
The President also expressed hope for enhanced ties between
the Philippines and the UK.
The Labour Party’s landslide victory in the July 4 UK elections ended the Conservative Party’s 14-year rule.
The Philippines and the UK, which established diplomatic relations in 1946, aim to deepen cooperation in trade, investment, technology, and defense under the UK-Philippines Enhanced Partnership.
Starmer is set to work as Britain’s new leader Friday, speaking with world leaders and appointing his ministerial team after his Labour
party’s landslide general election victory ended 14 years of Conservative rule.
Starmer named Rachel Reeves the UK’s first woman finance minister and appointed David Lammy as foreign secretary following his election win to become centre-left Labour’s first prime minister since Gordon Brown in 2010.
Flag-waving crowds of cheering Labour activists lined Downing Street as Starmer pledged to “rebuild” the UK after head of state King Charles III invited him to form a government during a meeting at
Buckingham Palace. Within hours, Starmer held a flurry of phone calls with leaders, including reaffirming London’s “unwavering” support for Kyiv’s war against invading Russian forces with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Joe Biden.
He also spoke to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, and the prime ministers of Canada, Italy, Ireland and Poland, alongside the heads of the UK’s devolved governments in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.

A HOUSE leader has joined Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez in supporting President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s P29 Rice Program, which aims to provide affordable rice to Filipino families amid rising global food prices.
“This program is essential to help our fellow Filipinos, especially during these challenging times. It shows the administration’s dedication to ensuring every family has access to affordable and nutritious food,” said Deputy Speaker David Suarez, who represents the second district of Quezon province in Congress.
Romualdez, dubbed as “Mr. Rice” for his nationwide rice distribution efforts to reduce the staple’s cost, had earlier hailed the P29 Rice Program as a testament to President Marcos’ commitment to tackling inflation and enhancing food security.
Romualdez said that “offering
rice at P29 per kilo to our most vulnerable citizens is a vital step in reducing hunger and improving the quality of life for millions of Filipinos.”
The program, which launched its trial on Friday, operates in 10 locations across Metro Manila and Bulacan. It offers rice at P29 per kilogram to vulnerable groups, including members of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps), senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWDs), and solo parents.
Beneficiaries can purchase subsidized rice every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, with a limit of 10 kilos per household each month. Each trial site is expected to support around 60,000 households monthly.
According to Suarez, the P29 Rice Program is a game-changer for the agricultural sector. “This noble initiative only helps families put food on the table but also supports our local farmers by increasing demand for their produce,” Suarez said.

SIX Filipino crew members of Houthiattacked oil tanker M/T Wind arrived home Friday night.
The Filipino seafarers aboard Philippine Airlines flight PR512 landed at Ninoy Aquino International Airport Terminal in Parañaque City, according to a Facebook post of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA) on Saturday.
The vessel had 23 Filipino crew members when Houthi rebels launched one anti-ship ballistic missile off Yemen’s Red Sea past midnight on May 18 (local time), hitting the Panamanian-flagged and Greek-owned and -operated oil tanker.
M/T Wind came from Sheskharis terminal in Russia’s Black Sea port of Novorossiysk where it loaded oil and was bound for China, according to international reports.
“A coalition vessel immediately responded to the distress call by M/T Wind, but no assistance was needed. The crew of M/T Wind was able to restore propulsion and steering, and no casualties were reported. M/T Wind resumed its course under its own power,” reported the United States Central Command.
The OWWA airport ream welcomed the Filipinos, who received financial aid, food and transportation assistance, and hotel accommodation.
THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) reported that the transmission test conducted Friday in two municipalities of Tawi-Tawi was successful.
Full Automation System with Transparency Audit/Count (FASTrAC) and Secure Electronic Transmission Services (SETS) projects were demonstrated during the Voter Education Seminar in Bongao and Siminul in preparation for the 2025 midterm elections and Bangsamoro Parliamentary Elections.
In a news release, the poll body said the Election Results (ERs) and Logs from the island municipalities of Simunul and Bongao in Tawi-Tawi were successfully transmitted to the consolidated canvassing system (CCS) and servers.
Comelec chair George Erwin Garcia and senior officials led the seminar with an automated counting machine (ACM) demonstration participated in by registered voters.
“During the pilot test transmission, both ACMs in Simunul and Bongao successfully transmitted the ERs and Logs to the Simunul CCS (8:51 AM) and Bongao CCS (11:22 AM), as well as to the following six (6) servers which were stationed at the Comelec Main Office, Intramuros, Manila,” the Comelec said.
NITED States President Joe Biden fended off questions about his mental fitness and electability in a TV interview meant to draw a line under a disastrous debate performance that triggered calls for him to quit his re-election bid.
With rebellion brewing among some nervous Democratic voters, lawmakers and donors, the oneon-one with the ABC network was hyped as the most consequential of the 81-year-old president’s long career.
But the 22-minute sit-down appeared to provide little reassurance, as Biden blamed sickness for his sub-par performance and repeatedly dismissed polling and fears within his party that the debate had gravely wounded his prospects.
“I was sick, I was feeling terrible... I just had a really bad cold,” said the
president, in his first unscripted remarks of any length since last week’s showdown with Republican rival Donald Trump.
The interview was intended to help Biden weather the storm, but his hoarse voice and meandering answers drew immediate Democratic fire for appearing “out of touch.”
Asked if staying in the race might jeopardize Democrats holding on to the White House, Biden said: “I don’t think anybody’s more qualified to be president or win this race than me.”
He dodged calls to have doctors
assess his mental acuity, saying that the duties of the presidency mean “I have a cognitive test every single day. Every day I have that test, everything I do.”
I’m staying in the race. I’ll beat Donald Trump. – US President Joe Biden
The Trump campaign mockingly posted on social media that “Biden sounds great” as the broadcast went out, before concluding the president “is in denial and in decline.”
The interview came after Biden was hesitant and often incoherent during the debate against Trump in Atlanta,
leading to panic within his party and calls for him to pull out of the race.
The Biden campaign has pushed back hard on any suggestion he may withdraw and, just hours before the ABC interview, released an aggressive campaign travel schedule for the rest of July.
Appearing at a campaign rally in Madison, Wisconsin, the president delivered an energetic stump speech, unequivocally declaring, “I’m staying in the race. I’ll beat Donald Trump.”
Post-debate polls have shown a widening deficit in Trump’s favor, and at least four Democrats in Congress have called on Biden to step aside, as have major newspapers, donors and a raft of Democratic-supporting political commentators.
Senate Intelligence Committee chairman Mark Warner and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries were both planning crisis talks with lawmakers in the coming days, US media reported. AFP
IRAN’S reformist candidate Masoud Pezeshkian on Saturday won a runoff presidential election against ultraconservative Saeed Jalili, the interior ministry said.
Pezeshkian received more than 16 million votes and Jalili more than 13 million out of about 30 million votes cast, electoral authority spokesman Mohsen Eslami said, adding that voter turnout stood at 49.8 percent.
The number of spoiled ballots was reported to be over 600,000.
Pezeshkian said the vote was the start of a “partnership” with the Iranian people.
“The difficult path ahead will not be smooth except with your companionship, empathy, and trust. I extend my hand to you,” Pezeshkian said in a post on social media platform X, after on Tuesday saying he would “extend the hand of friendship to everyone” if he won.
The election, called early after the death of ultraconservative president Ebrahim Raisi in a helicopter
crash, followed a first round marked by a historically low turnout last week.
Iran’s supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, who wields ultimate authority, had called for a higher turnout in the runoff, emphasising the importance of the election.

STARMER BEGINS UK ‘REBUILD’ AFTER POLL WIN
NEWLY elected Labor prime minister Keir Starmer will kickstart his plan to “rebuild Britain” on his first full day in charge Saturday, after his party’s landslide election win ended 14 years of Conservative rule. Starmer spent his first hours in Downing Street on Friday appointing his ministerial team, hours after securing centre-left Labor’s return to power with a whopping 174-seat majority in the UK parliament.
He is expected to hold his first cabinet meeting on Saturday, with Britain’s first woman finance minister Rachel Reeves and new Foreign Secretary David Lammy in attendance.
“The work of change begins immediately,”Starmer said Friday shortly after being confirmed as prime minister by King Charles III and flag-waving crowds of cheering Labour activists welcomed him to Downing Street. “But have no doubt, we will rebuild Britain,” he added.
Reiterating his five key “missions” for government in his maiden speech, the 61-year-old vowed to get the state-run National Health Service “back on its feet”, ensure “secure borders” and safer streets. AFP
INDIAN PREACHER AT CENTER OF STAMPEDE ‘DISTRESSED’
AN INDIAN preacher whose latest sermon ended in a deadly stampede said Saturday morning he was “deeply distressed” in his first public response to the disaster.
Bhole Baba’s prayer meeting near the northern city of Hathras on Tuesday saw the deaths of 121 people, the vast majority women, after a rush to the exits among the 250,000 devotees who came to watch him preach.
The former police officer-turnedspiritual leader has not been seen in public since, while seven others involved in staging the event have been arrested.
A police report issued after the stampede named several organizers of the prayer meeting sought for arrest, but Baba’s name was not among them. In a video statement aired by Indian broadcasters, Bhole Baba said that he had faith that those responsible for the disaster would be punished.
“May God give us the strength to bear this pain,” he added. It was not immediately clear where the former police constable-turnedpreacher, dressed entirely in white in keeping with all his public appearances, was speaking from. AFP

CYBERCRIME gangs are looking to rebuild with new tactics after global police operations this year made a huge dent in their activities, experts have told AFP.
The gangs have had a bad year so far, with law enforcement operations taking out some of prominent groups including LockBit, a loose network of largely Russianspeaking cyber criminals.
LockBit was one of the major developers of malicious software that allows criminals to lock victims out of their networks, steal their data and demand a ransom for its return.
Ransomware attacks using LockBit and other software have led to major disruption of governments, businesses and public
services like hospitals. Victims have paid hundreds of millions of dollars to gangs, usually in untraceable cryptocurrencies.
The disruption of LockBit in February and another network of malicious bots in May led to a “cleaning up” of the ransomware scene, said Nicolas Raiga-Clemenceau of the XMCO consultancy in France. But he said “a number of new groups” had since appeared and started to organize themselves.
Allan Liska of US cybersecurity firm Recorded Future agreed and said there were worrying trends emerging with some of the new groups.
Some of the newer gangs appeared to be considering threats of physical violence rather than just online intimidation, he said.
Liska pointed out that gangs would already have stolen a bunch of personal information, like the addresses of senior executives.
“And so if you’re not getting anywhere in your negotiations, that’s something you can threaten,” he said.
“We’re going to do something in the real world to hurt you or hurt your family.”
He called this “violence as a service.”
Liska and other experts are still assessing the new landscape, saying a bunch of new groups had emerged. AFP
A total of 292 victims will receive payouts ranging from 55,000 to 850,000 Canadian dollars, according to the report seen by AFP. Accounting firm Ernst & Young has been tapped as a third-party intermediary to determine the amount distributed to each victim. Geoff Budden, one of the attorneys representing the victims, told AFP the amount was in line with “similar compensation from other courts.”
“People didn’t really grasp the scale of the problem and how widespread the abuse was,” he said. AFP
OTHEL V. CAMPOS,
DDespite his vast professional achievements and a mining career of over 20 years, his true passion lies with his family.
“I guess my passion now is my family. I think my family and my friends have always been my passion. I enjoy my outdoor time. I suppose growing up in the open air, in the rural side has developed that interest in what I am doing right now,” he said.
His family gave him a stronger sense of purpose, as he had a troubled past during his teen years. He single-handedly raised his son to be the mature individual he is now.
His wife and two children, including seven-month-old daughter Eliza, bring immense joy and purpose to his life. Becoming a father at 47 has been a refreshing experience, reminding him of what truly matters.
Bickerton’s upbringing in rural Australia fostered a love for the outdoors. He enjoys activities like fishing and bushwalking and finds solace and peace in nature.
His work with OceanaGold has fueled his passion for travel, allowing him to live and work in diverse locations across the globe, from Australia and New Zealand, Papua New Guinea to the United States and the Philippines.
AVID Bickerton, Oceanagold Corp. general manager for operations at Didipio Mines in the Philippines, is a highly-skilled and experienced miner.
Leadership role
Bickerton didn’t start his career with a university degree. Instead, he opted for hands-on experience and mentorships, working his way up from the ground.
This practical approach instilled valuable skills that would later serve him well as a leader. His career path has been diverse, encompassing roles in nickel refining, project management and gold and copper mining across various locations.
“I suppose pre-entering into the mining industry, I sort of spent my youth and had some years when I didn’t know what I wanted to do or where I wanted to go. I made a decision not to go to university. I’ve probably had what some would call a bit of a misfit. I guess things have a way of fitting together what works best for one. My decisions led me here, and I’m totally grateful,”Bickerton said. His adaptability is evident in his willingness to embrace new challenges. Throughout his career, he has taken on various roles within OceanaGold, demonstrating a commitment to continuous learning. He even pursued additional qualifications in project management, showcasing his dedication to professional growth.

The program provided comprehensive training on navigating TikTok Shop and valuable lessons that will empower MSMEs to leverage the power of e-commerce and live streaming for business growth.
Trade undersecretary Cristina Roque emphasized the importance of digitalization for Philippine businesses and the potential of Camp Asenso to equip MSMEs with the skills needed to achieve sustained growth and success.
Nearly 400 TikTok Shop sellers participated in the program. The event also featured presentations by successful brands like Casi’s Mushroom Chicharon and Tiny Buds. These companies shared their experiences using TikTok Shop to expand their reach and scale their operations.
Josemartin Casillano of Casi’s Mushroom Chicharon discussed the importance of storytelling in customer engagement while Lorin Tan of Tiny Buds shared her brand’s experience and offered practical tips for navigating the dynamic digital landscape.
Category lead for F&B at TikTok Shop Niks Fojas stressed the platform’s dedication to empowering businesses of all sizes, particularly MSMEs.
“Our mission is to provide entrepreneurs with the tools and platforms needed to expand reach and grow in this digital age. We will continue to roll out initiatives designed to help our MSMEs succeed, through initiatives such as educational programs, enhanced seller support and campaigns,” she said.
TikTok Shop’s dedication to MSMEs is evident in initiatives like the “Buy Local, Shop Local” campaign, an effort promoting local businesses while contributing to the growth of the Philippine e-commerce landscape.
“There’s definitely a positive momentum building in the Philippines’ mining sector over the past few years. I’m eager to see if this translates into real operations, unlocking the country’s vast potential,” he said, noting a marked improvement in the Philippine mining sector from years of stagnation due to policy constraints.
“However, long-term investments in exploration, design, permitting and development require stability in decision-making. Companies need to know the rules won’t change significantly, ensuring a predictable environment. This stability will be key to truly setting the Philippine mining industry up

The mining executive recognizes the importance of stability and consistency in decision-making for the mining industry. He values the positive engagement with local regulators who are objective, proactive and committed to ensuring responsible mining practices.
Bickerton encourages those interested in mining to embrace the opportunities the industry offers. He emphasizes the value of open-mindedness, embracing diversity and working with people from different cultures and backgrounds. He believes that a willingness to learn and grow will lead to a rewarding career in mining.
“It was in my late 20s that I met my first really good mentors who taught me about what it takes to be a good leader. I think that’s one of the things that I enjoy about the industry. If I could be a mentor and help people, especially those who might start off coming into the industry because they are disadvantaged, it would be a huge opportunity for me to help them,” he said.
He aims to leverage his extensive experience to contribute significantly to the development of the mining project and OceanaGold’s overall growth. In his second tour with OceanaGold Philippines, he took on the challenge, not as a temporary stint, but as a lifelong career.

AS WE emerge from the pandemic’s shadow, the trials and tribulations of car ownership in the bustling Metro Manila have become increasingly apparent. What was once a symbol of convenience and freedom has now, for many, become a source of constant headaches.
The daily commute, once a manageable affair, has now morphed into a seemingly endless battle against the ever-worsening traffic congestion. Gone are the days of nonrush hour respite, as the roads seem to be perpetually clogged, no matter the time of day. Leaving for work early in the morning provides little reprieve, with traffic building up as early as 6 AM, whether you live in the north or the south.
TOYOTA Motor Philippines
(TMP) is kicking its racing program into high gear, announcing the 10th season of its premier motorsports event, now rebranded as the TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Philippine Cup
(TGR Philippine Cup).
The TGR Philippine Cup kicks off its first of three legs this July 13 at the Clark International Speedway in Mabalacat, Pampanga, open to the public! The event signifies a new chapter in Philippine racing, building upon the success of the previous TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Vios Cup. Launched in 2014, TMP’s racing series aimed to bring the thrill of motorsports closer to Filipino fans by inviting professional and amateur racers
to compete in the locally-made Toyota Vios. Now in its 10th edition, the event is expanding to provide ever-better experiences for spectators, with more activities and a revamped format.
The TGR Philippine Cup will feature sprint races across three categories - Promotional, Sporting, and Super Sporting - to determine the best in Philippine motorsports. Joining the Sporting Class as part of the TGR Philippines team is actor and host Ryan Agoncillo, while actor Troy Montero continues his bid for the Super Sporting championship.
Newcomers to the circuit race include celebrity, influencer, and media racers who have been promoted from the previous Autocross Challenge to the new Novice Class. Making their debuts are Reph Bangsil, Lexi Mendiola, sim racer Russel Reyes, and media personalities Pablo Salapantan, Jose Altoveros, Jamil Lacuna,
and John Rey San Diego.
Fans can also look forward to a thrilling driving exhibition by professional drifters using the GR 86, as well as the opportunity to win a shotgun ride experience. The event will feature freebies, official GR merchandise, GR road cars on display and available for test drives, and a special live stage performance.
“Our hope for this new chapter of Toyota motorsports in the Philippines is to elevate the experience even further for fans by providing them with more ways to enjoy TOYOTA GAZOO Racing,” shared TMP First Vice President for Vehicle Sales Operations, Mr. Danny Cruz.
The TOYOTA GAZOO Racing Philippine Cup is brought to you by Official Fuel Partner Petron, Official Tire Partner GT Radial, and Official Timekeeper Seiko, among other supporting partners.
THE Autohub Group has officially launched Zeekr, a global intelligent premium electric mobility brand, in the country. This move reinforces the Autohub Group’s commitment to providing and promoting sustainable mobility solutions for Filipino consumers.
The grand launch event, graced by Autohub Group President Mr. Willy Tee Ten and Zeekr’s ASEAN Leader Mr. Alex Bao, showcased Zeekr’s impressive lineup of state-ofthe-art electric sedans and SUVs at the Bonifacio High Street Amphitheatre in Bonifacio Global City, Taguig.
Compounding the frustration is the relentless surge in fuel prices. What was once an affordable expense has now become a financial burden, with the cost of gasoline and diesel almost tripling or quadrupling in just the span of a year. The high cost of maintaining a car has kept middle-income families from fulfilling their automotive dreams, and even those working in the call center industry are now reconsidering their plans to purchase new or used vehicles.
Yet, amidst these challenges, the local auto market remains surprisingly vibrant. Car manufacturers, from American to Chinese to Korean marques, are fiercely competing for the attention of the upper echelons of society, whose appetite for new cars appears to be insatiable. Showrooms are constantly refreshed with scintillating new models, and their stocks are being snapped up by eager consumers almost as soon as they hit the floor.
“The Zeekr vehicles that we are launching today, which push the boundaries of electric vehicle technology, represent the Autohub Group’s commitment to introducing futureforward and sustainable mobility solutions that are tailor-fit to the Philippine market,” said Mr. Tee Ten. “This grand launch marks only the beginning of an even stronger partnership with Zeekr to deliver the future of driving.”
Making their debut in the Philippines are the Zeekr 001 Long Range, Zeekr 001 Privilege, Zeekr X Premium, and Zeekr X Privilege. These vehicles are
designed to deliver exceptional performance, advanced technology, and unparalleled driving experiences, positioning Zeekr as a premier sustainable mobility solution.
Key features of the Zeekr models include lightning-fast charging times, with the Zeekr 001’s charging port boasting a capacity of up to 200kW, allowing for a 10% to 80% charge in just 30 minutes. Additionally, the vehicles are equipped with intelligent matrix LED projection headlights and a full-width tail light design, enhancing both aesthetics and safety.
“The launch of these Zeekr vehicles today will definitely accelerate the shift toward electric mobility solutions in the Philippines, which is a key market for us at Zeekr,” said Mr. Bao. “We are confident that the Autohub Group, with its proven track record and strong market presence, can help push the Philippines toward more sustainable solutions and deliver more innovative products to Filipino consumers.”
The Zeekr 001 2024 and Zeekr X 2024 have also achieved prestigious 5-star ratings from the European New Car Assessment Program (Euro NCAP), setting a new benchmark in automotive safety and luxury.
This dichotomy between the everyday struggles of car owners and the bustling activity in the automotive industry is a true conundrum, leaving experts scratching their heads. While the problems of traffic, soaring fuel prices, and high maintenance costs continue to weigh heavily on the minds of consumers, the car dealers seem to be enjoying a bountiful harvest, selling their wares to a seemingly unperturbed clientele.
As the Metro Manila landscape continues to evolve, it remains to be seen how car owners will navigate this new era of automotive ownership, balancing the allure of the latest models with the harsh realities of the daily commute and ever-increasing operational costs. One thing is certain: the car ownership experience in the metro has become a complex dance, with both triumphs and tribulations in equal measure.

COACH Tim Cone felt more Filipino than ever as he led Gilas Pilipinas to a historic victory in the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Riga, Latvia.
The triumph against Latvia marked the rst time the Philippines defeated a European opponent in international basketball since their win over Spain at the 1960 Summer Olympics.
Having lived in the Philippines since the age of nine, Cone considers himself essentially Filipino, despite his blonde hair and green eyes.
“I grew up in the Philippines.
I’ve been there my whole life,” he shared, asserting his deep connection to the country.
Cone’s ties to the Philippines run deep, with his formative years spent in Baler, Aurora, where his father worked for a logging company.
His former classmates from Baler Central School fondly remember him.
“Iyan si Tim Cone naglalakad din iyan nong araw nagdi-dribble ng bola pauwi sa logpond nila sa Castillo. Kung minsan nakasakay sa pickup (truck) nila together with sister Julie,” reminisced Claro Gonzales.
Mervin Rubio, another classmate, recalled their teacher, Mr. Custodio, and wondered if Cone had ever participated in farm work, a common school activity during elementary days. “Ang tikas pala ni Mr. Custodio noon pa, pinag gamas din kaya si Tim Cone,” he mused. Born in the United States, Cone moved to the Philippines with
his family, later transferring to an international school in Manila before returning to the U.S. After college, Cone came back to the Philippines at 24, beginning his legendary coaching career with Alaska. He amassed 25 titles, including two PBA grand slams, and coached the national teams in the 1998 Asian Games and the 1998 Jones Cup.
EDUARD “Landslide” Folayang, the Chairman and Co-Founder of Lions Nation MMA, is set to be honored with the 2024 Sports Personality of the Year award by the International Association of World Peace Advocates (IAWPA)
Dr. Maxwell A. Hagan, the Country Director of IAWPA Philippines and UN Eminent Peace Ambassador, made the announcement earlier this week that Folayang has been selected to receive this esteemed accolade at the upcoming IAWPA Global Awards ceremony. This will be held at the Hotel Supreme in Baguio City, Benguet on July 20.
THE 2nd RCM Golf Cup organized by the Rotary Club of Manila and Rotary Club of Manila Foundation Inc. and presented by NETSEC TECHNOLOGIES proved to be a huge success at the Sta. Elena Golf and Country Club in Laguna. Luis Castro emerged as the overall champion but the biggest winner was Val Co who won the Lambretta V200 Special scooter in the raffle during the awarding ceremonies.
Eduard Folayang said: “Receiving this award is a tremendous honor. It underscores the importance of perseverance and dedication in achieving one’s dreams. I am deeply grateful for this recognition, and I share it with my team, my family, and all who have supported me throughout my career.”
Folayang’s remarkable career began as a bemedalled wushu sanda athlete for the Philippine National Team. His devotion to martial arts led him to transition into MMA, a move that would change the landscape of the all-encompassing sport in the country forever.
In 2016, Folayang achieved a de ning moment when he captured the ONE Lightweight MMA World Championship. But like all great champions, he faced setbacks along the way. In a stunning display of resilience and determination, he reclaimed the crown in 2018, cementing his legacy as one of the greatest mixed martial artists to emerge from the Philippines.
Now, he embarks on a path with his new team, Lions Nation MMA. This signi es a renewed commitment to achieving greatness, rekindling the same re that has made him a World Champion.
Cone’s recent success with Gilas Pilipinas includes a dramatic gold medal win against China at the Asian Games, avenging a 1998 loss. His team, featuring stars like Kai Sotto, Junemar Fajardo, and naturalized Filipino Justin “Noypi” Brownlee, continued their impressive run by defeating the sixth-ranked Latvian team and securing a semi nal spot in the Olympic Qualifying Tournament.
Nenad Vucinic, recognizing Cone’s achievement, praised him: “Amazing job by coach Tim! Latvia coach Luca, one of the best tacticians in the world, and coach Tim dominated him.”
Regardless of the outcome of their semi nal clash with Brazil, Cone and his Gilas squad have demonstrated that Philippine basketball is on the rise.
“How many times do you get to an international area and have success? That’s a huge feather in your cap, not just for me but for all the players and all the people back home,” Cone remarked proudly.

FELINES have traditionally been perceived as aloof and independent creatures, leading their caregivers to question the depth of their affection. However, a deeper understanding of a cat's communication style demonstrates that they can indeed display love, albeit in a more understated manner. Renowned experts in the field, such as Katie Grzyb, DVM, and Mustafa Tshash, highlight that cats are capable of experiencing and expressing love through a range of behaviors. Here are some indicators to help you recognize the signs of genuine affection from your cat.
Body Language: The Eyes Have It
One of the clearest indicators of a cat’s affection is their body language, particularly through their eyes. As Katie Grzyb explains in "Does My Cat Love Me? Here's How to Tell," cats use eye contact to show trust and adoration. Slow blinking, often referred to as "cat kisses," is a significant sign of a cat’s affection. When a cat looks at you with half-closed eyes and slowly blinks, they are expressing contentment and love.

IF IT has feelings, why hurt it, kill or eat it? Why not just care for it? Surely caring for a life is life’s natural therapy. Living cruelty free is easy, great for your health and your soul.” -The late John R. Hughes, cofounder of NoToDogMeat (NTDM) campaign.
The dreaded festival of dog meat eating in Yulin, Guangxi, China was held and ended last week --June 29-- despite the fact China’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Affairs has declared that "...dogs have been ‘specialized’ to become companion animals, and internationally are not considered to be livestock, and they will not be regulated as livestock in China."
Contrary to the claim of some international groups, Julia De Cadenet, co-founder of the NoToDogMeat (NTDM) campaign, said NTDM has live videos from China showed that the attendance of dog meat-consuming patrons in Yulin this year did not dwindle at all. She added that
Mustafa Tshash also highlights this behavior in "Does Your Cat Truly Love You? Here's How You Know for Sure," noting that slow blinks indicate a cat feels relaxed and safe in your presence.
Headbutts and Rubbing: Marking Their Territory
He was a kitten rescued from the middle of a busy road frequented by delivery and cargo trucks in Tandang Sora in March this year. He is the 10th cat
Another common behavior exhibited by cats is headbutting or cheek rubbing. Cats have scent glands located in their cheeks, and when they rub their head against an individual, they are essentially marking that person as part of their territory. This behavior typically starts in kittenhood as a social gesture used to bond with their mother and siblings. Experts emphasize that headbutting is a cat's way of showing affection and establishing a sense of ownership over the person they are interacting with. It is seen as a positive expression of happiness and fondness towards that individual.
Grooming: A Sign of Trust
Grooming behaviors in cats can be a strong indicator of affection and trust. When cats groom each other, it signifies a bond based on trust and affection, which can also extend to their human companions once a strong relationship is established. If your cat engages in grooming behaviors towards you, such as licking or allowing you to brush them, it is a clear indication of deep trust. It is important to be mindful of signs of overstimulation. Grzyb advises to watch out for such as rapid tail swishing or growling, as grooming can at times become overwhelming for them.
she did not see other foreign activists in the main town where the open rows of dog meat stalls and eateries lined up the main streets.
Julia's group was able to rescue four Yulinbound dogs, stressing in one of her live videos that it is not possible to save live dogs from the main town since most of the displayed dogs there are torched carcasses. Julia added that the locals can easily identify the "political disruptors," a tag they gave to the foreign activists, and international and domestic advocates. They actually followed her around and confiscated her camera.
The "torture festival,” according to the NoToDogMeat campaigner, butchered more than 10, 000 mixes of strays and stolen pets within 10 days of the event starting from June 21 to serve the thousands of Chinese dog meat eaters.
Shenzhen and Zhuhai, cities from Guandong province which is a neighbor province of Guangxi where Yulin is located, have imposed bans on dog and cat meat consumption. This
led to the assumption that dog meat eaters from both cities have flocked to Yulin to eat dog meat, casting a shadow on the claim that attendance this year has decreased.
The UK charity, The World Protection for Dogs and Cats in the Meat Trade, launched the NoToDogMeat movement and, for 11 years now, have held protests after protests in China and all over the world against the "horrific cruelty" to dogs and sometimes even cats.
Within the week of NTDM’s vigilance in China, the team intercepted a truck delivering dogs to Yulin but, unfortunately, most of the dogs were already dead. The carcasses of the dogs are blowtorched, butchered, cooked, and served. The Yulin Dog Meat Torture Festival, said NTDM, is not only animal cruelty but also blatantly unsanitary. NTDM stressed that the majority of dogs they saved were infected with contagious diseases.
The Philippines has been indirectly involved in the movement against the Yulin Dog Meat
Kneading: A Comforting Gesture
The act of kneading, reminiscent of making biscuits, is a behavior that stems from kittenhood where cats knead their mother's belly to stimulate milk production. Even as adults, cats continue to knead as a means of expressing comfort and affection. Grzyb further explains that kneading triggers the release of endorphins in cats, which can help alleviate stress and induce relaxation. Tshash also notes that when cats knead on their owners, it is a clear indication of their happiness and contentment.
Showing Their Belly:
The Ultimate Trust
One of the ultimate signs of trust from a cat is when they expose their belly to you. This vulnerable position indicates that the cat feels completely safe and trusts you. However, as Grzyb cautions, this is not necessarily an invitation for a belly rub, as many cats may react defensively if their belly is touched.
To be continued.
Festival through the efforts of the late John R. Hughes. He was an Englishman who settled in the country and was credited as the founder of the NoToDogMeat campaign. In 2006, Hughes established the Dogs Mountain sanctuary in Naguilian, La Union, where his ashes are lovingly kept there.
John Hughes's legacy lives on through Julia De Cadenet, a British co-founder, who bravely went to a dog market in China and took video footages showing the cruel treatment of dogs being openly sold for their meat. Together with her team, they were able to rescue four Yulin-bound dogs and are making every possible effort to rehabilitate and bring to the UK the pitiful dogs. They run a sanctuary with 700 rescued dogs in China.
About the Author: Greg Salido Quimpo played a big part in the rescue of thousands of slaughter-bound dogs in the country. Together with a group of British and Filipino advocates, he significantly advanced the awareness on animal welfare in the Philippines. He is currently a consultant to the UK's NoToDogMeat movement.

HRIMP is a popular seafood choice and for a good reason – the premium ingredient is simply delicious.
But as much as we want to serve it on our tables frequently, the cost can be prohibitive, and fresh options in the metropolis remain limited.
Chef and culinary educator Rob Pengson, in fact, calls shrimp “a high-value item on every menu.”
To address this and to make shrimp accessible to everyone, DATAJ Aquafarms launched its latest innovative product—the DATAJ Live Catch fresh processed shrimp.
“For this, we wanted to make excellent shrimp more readily available and accessible to more people. We invested in our farms and processing plants, and undertook careful research and training in order to achieve our vision,” said DATAJ Aquafarm acting general manager Joseph Garcia.
“Shrimp has become a staple food for us. Indeed, all markets would have shrimp. But with us, you can consider us as your one single area—a farm that produces roughly around 15 tons of shrimp a day,” he added.
During an intimate media event on June 26, Garcia also discussed how it was possible to create fresh yet processed shrimp.
“We are a unique farm that processes live shrimp. So, we harvest them alive and we have a container that is aerated. Once they reach the processing plant and we transfer them to the conveyors, they really are still alive,” Garcia said.
DATAJ Aquafarm Inc. in Cagayan province grows and harvests high-quality Litopenaeus vannamei or whiteleg shrimp and utilizes
freezing technology to seal in its goodness.
Chef Rob shared how this kind of product could help him as a professional chef.
“Having shrimp this way is something we chefs appreciate because it is a game-changer in our business—helping us save on costs in preparation and storage,” he said.
Chef Rob showcased the potential of DATAJ Live Catch with dishes such as shrimp tostada with guacamole, crispy Asian shrimp salad, and creamy shrimp and chorizo pasta.
“The best ally of any cook is Mother Nature – if you pick a mango at its freshest, there’s nothing you need to do to be amazed. If it’s not the right timing, you know it’s not a good experience. It’s like getting the shrimp at its best quality – very similar to the way tuna is caught for sushi chefs,” he said.

WHENEVER someone is traveling, one of the things that they often think about is where they will be staying. Some of the factors they consider in choosing their accommodations are their comfortability and convenience, especially if they have affairs to attend somewhere else.
As the country’s leading airport hotel, Savoy Hotel Manila offers not only the convenience of being a stone’s throw away from NAIA Terminal 3, but also the proximity to Newport City’s variety of entertainment offerings as well as BGC and Makati.
The 11-story hotel boasts a total of 684 rooms with four room types. The Essential rooms offer a simple and comfortable experience with a view of the airport runway while the Space Suite offers a larger space complete with a living room area. Guests can enjoy a panoramic view of the NAIA Terminal 3’s runway at the Runway Suite along with premium amenities. Meanwhile, the Deck Suite provides a gorgeous view of the
city along with a minibar.
As it provides a comfortable and pleasant experience to all its guests, Savoy Hotel Manila is also an advocate of sustainable practices through its WeSave Sustainability Program, which promotes the habit of recycling among its employees. It also has its own Vertical Garden that grows a variety of vegetables and herbs which are used in the offerings of its very own Savoy Cafe.
“Our unwavering commitment to being the Philippines’ leading airport hotel ensures that every guest—whether they are leisure travelers, business professionals, millennials, young families, or our cherished OFWs and Balikbayans— receives exceptional service and comprehensive amenities while being involved in our sustainability efforts,” said Savoy Hotel Manila General Manager Den Navarro
In its commitment to making sure that every guest’s stay is as memorable as it can be, the hotel is also introducing new promotions for its guests such as its Wine Table Buffet, which offers unlimited wine and charcuterie as well as Poolside Events like Buskers Night every Wednesday and Get Fired Up Barbecue Night on Thursdays.
Apart from its new promotions, the airport hotel will also be hosting the Cebu Food Festival from July 22 to 28, which will feature the dishes of Savoy Hotel Mactan’s Chef Coke Semblante in collaboration with Savoy Hotel Manila Executive Chef Kit Carpio.
