MANILA is demanding P60 million (close to $1 million) in damages from Beijing for the brutal harassment by China Coast Guard personnel against Philippine Navy troops on a resupply mission near Ayungin Shoal on June 17.
Armed Forces chief of staff Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said the P60 million does not yet include compensation for the Filipino soldier who lost a finger during the clash.

THE powerful mid-range missile system that Washington deployed to the Philippines for the Balikatan joint exercises will remain in the country indefinitely even after the conclusion of Salaknib Phase 2 in September, the Philippine Army clarified yesterday.
PRESIDENT Marcos approved the military's proposal to acquire multi-role fighters (MRFs) to boost the country's defensive capabilities, Armed Forces of the Philippines chief Gen. Romeo Brawner Jr. said on Thursday. The decision was reached during the AFP's first command conference with the President, Brawner said, adding that the military is also studying plans to “harden” its facilities to make these more resistant to hypersonic missile strikes and other forms of attack. "As to which MRF and how many units, no decision has been reached yet. But we urgently need these MRFs," he said in a press briefing shortly after the command conference. While the 12 units of FA-50s in the Philippine Air Force are quite formidable, these are still not enough, Brawner said.

(DA) kicks off today, July 5, a largescale trial of "Program 29" to deliver high-quality rice at P29 per kilogram (kg) to as many as 6.9 million vulnerable households, or around 35 million Filipinos.
The large-scale trial aims to collect comprehensive data on supply, demand, and logistics, crucial for a smooth nationwide rollout of the program.
DA Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel asked consumers to practice prudence in buying affordable rice and refrain from taking any abusive steps to undermine the program.

Initially, 10 KADIWA centers in Metro Manila and Bulacan will participate in the program wherein to sell quality rice at P29 per kilo every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday.
THE imminent leadership turnover at the Department of Education (DepEd) signals a shift in the agency’s priorities. Incoming education secretary and current senator Sonny Angara said that his main areas of focus upon taking the DepEd’s helm on July 19 are; streamlining the curriculum, improving quality of teach-
ing, and providing better benefits to teachers.
"We’ll go back-to-basics; we must improve our reading education. The quality of education in terms of math, languages, and science has gone low. We must improve its system as this would help the country in general,” Angara told reporters on Thursday.
THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) on Thursday welcomed Hollywood actor Leonardo DiCaprio’s call to preserve Masungi Georeserve in Baras, Rizal from further deforestation and unwanted human activities.
DENR said in a statement.
"No one is exempt from the law,” the agency further said.
The actor’s call came amid a heated dispute between the DENR and conservation group Masungi Georeserve Foundation (MGF), which controls part of the protected area.
However, the department said it does not need to be nudged into action by famous personalities as it has made inroads in trying to protect the georeserve.

Citing documents from the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Binay earlier said that the cost of the new Senate building was around P21 billion, lower that the P23 billion that Cayetano reported.
The senator claimed the Senate building issue could be an offshoot of the political rivalry between Makati and Taguig, strongholds of the Binay and Cayetano families, respectively.

“We are eager to collaborate closely with Secretary Angara to further the mission of the PEAC, striving towards an inclusive, equitable, and superior educational system for all,” PEAC Executive Director Doris Fernandez Ferrer said in a statement.
“We are committed to sustaining our mission of alleviating classroom shortages and student overflow in public schools by providing financial support to Filipino learners in private high schools through the Government Assistance and Subsidies (GAS) Programs,” she added.
Under Angara's leadership, PEAC hopes to help more students through the expansion of their programs that aim to make private education more accessible.
These include the Education Service Contracting (ESC) program, which provides financial assistance to students transitioning from elementary to junior high school, as well as the Senior High School Voucher Program (SHSVP) for senior high school students.

The Filipinos absorbed a close 9496 setback but a better quotient record over their tormentors earned them the ticket to the next round.
A 19-point win would put Georgia in a semis against the top finisher of Group B, but their two-point victory gave the Filipino cagers the right to advance, and stay in contention for a slot to the Paris Olympics.

It also indicated that short “pad paper” for Grades 1-4 varies from PHP9.50 to P61 while intermediate pad paper is priced between PHP13.80 and PHP48.75. Writing materials like pencils and ballpoint pens range from PHP11.00 to PHP33.00 and PHP3.00 to PHP33.00, respectively.

DEPUTY Majority Leader and Quezon City Rep. Patrick Michael Vargas said he is elated about the multi-stakeholder cooperation as the La Mesa Ecopark reopened to the public on June 29. The park has been closed for over four months due to the end of the 25-year-old stewardship of Bantay Kalikasan.
“For this place to be in my district, I’m one of the luckiest congressmen already,” Vargas said.
According to Vargas, expressing confidence in the leadership of Mayor Joy Belmonte, who he said is the “fiercest environmentalist” he has ever met. THE Department of Budget and Management (DBM) has announced it will release by Friday, July 5, around P27 billion to settle unpaid Health Emergency Allowance (HEA) for health workers. In a statement, DBM Secretary Amenah Pangandaman confirmed the release as requested by the Department of Health (DOH) to pay the P27.453 billion the government owned the health workers.
“As compliance with the directive of our beloved President Bongbong Marcos, we will release the extra P27 billion requested by the Department of Health for settling the unpaid claims of our healthcare workers by Friday, July 5, 2024,” Pangandaman stated.
“This is a promise fulfilled. Even if the DOH requested this for 2025, the DBM made an effort to fulfil it earlier because our healthcare workers deserve it,” she added.
The allowance would cover the remaining 5,039,926 validated unpaid HEA claims and 4,283 COVID-19 sickness and death compensation claims by eligible healthcare and nonhealthcare workers.
In an earlier Senate hearing, the DOH proposed including the same amount in the 2025 National Expenditure Program.
As a result, the barriers in tollway entry points do not rise, leading to vehicle congestion.
To address these issues, Tulfo proposed to TRB executive director Alvin Carullo, that once the RFID reader starts to malfunction with at least
three vehicles lined up, toll expressway operators must manually lift barriers He also recommended that in this case. tolls should be free of charge until the issue is resolved.
The senator also urged the TRB to start implementing barrier-less system in the country’s expressways.
Carullo promised to discuss this with the TRB board for immediate action.
Adding burden to the riding public, Tulfo noted instances when motorists were unable to pass through tollway barriers due to a supposed zero balance.
Motorists would then be forced to reload despite still having enough funds in the RIFD.
However, after loading, they still need to wait 48 hours or more for operators to refund the balance that did not reflect in their account.
To rectify the problem, Tulfo urged the TRB to impose hefty fines and penalty against toll operators every time they commit a violation and cause inconvenience to the motorists.
He added that operators must be required to refund them within 24 hours.
He likewise said the TRB must solve the recurring RFID issues by October 2024 deadline as Carullo had promised him.
He stressed that motorists are paying expensive fees to save time and avoid any hassles, not the other way around.

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) has reiterated its appeal to air travelers to avoid making bomb and prank jokes, or spreading rumors regarding bomb threats to prevent panic and inconvenience at the airports.
The CAAP warned that dishing out bomb jokes is punishable by up to five years imprisonment and a fine of P40,000, or both, under Presidential Decree 1727 (Anti-Bomb Joke Law).

The incident occurred around on Wednesday in-

When asked by airline staffer about items in his check-in baggage, the passenger jeestingly replied, “No! Just Atomic Bomb.” He tried to retract his statement, but it was too late.
As a precaution, the airline employee reported the incident to the security. The passenger asserted that his luggage only contained personal items and apologized for his earlier remarks.
The station head however, temporarily suspended their check-in process and baggage handling to report the incident to the police.
CAAP area manager Edwin Luching said the couple was taken into custody by the PNP Avsegroup.

The new building, with modern classrooms and facilities, will serve as a learning hub for criminology education and research, offering students a better learning environment to prepare them for a fruitful career.
THE Marcos Jr. administration is taking a big leap forward in accelerating the country’s economic growth and development with the implementation of 185 flagship projects all over the country under its P9.14-trillion Build Better More Program.
This is a major component of the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 that seeks to expand and upgrade the country’s infrastructure to backstop government efforts towards economic and social transformation.
Of the 185 flagship projects, 81 are financed through official development assistance, 51 through the General Appropriations Act, 45 through public-private partnerships and seven through hybrid financing modalities.
But the efficient implementation of vital infrastructure projects faces big hurdles, including red tape, a problem repeatedly cited by both foreign and local entrepreneurs as a deterrent to investing in the country.
It’s true we already have RA 9485, or the Anti-Red Tape Act of 2007, intended precisely to speed up transactions with government offices at various levels.
This was amended by RA 11032 which renamed the law as the Ease of Doing Business and Efficient Government Service Delivery Act of 2018.
The new Executive Order complements both RA 9485 and RA 11032 but with a definite goal: to expedite the implementation of the 185 infrastructure flagship projects already approved by the National Economic and Development Authority.
Malacañang’s issuance of the EO follows closely a survey by Pulse Asia from March 6 to 10, 2024 showing that 56 percent of Filipinos cited complicated rules and regulations like red tape and changes in government policies and regulations as factors hindering the entry of foreign investment to the country.
But sustained infrastructure development requires a whole-of-government approach, not just intervention by the executive branch.
We’re glad the legislature is proactively helping the executive branch in this regard.
Up for consideration by the Senate is a bill that would require round-the-clock operations for government infrastructure projects to avoid wastage of funds and to maximize the benefits these projects will bring.
The 24/7 operations for infrastructure projects as proposed by Senate Bill 2716, also known as the Accelerated Infrastructure Delivery Act, would cover priority projects of the national government, local government units, and governmentowned and controlled corporations.
If passed into law, the measure would speed up the construction, repair, and maintenance of roads and bridges.
The bill’s exploratory note wants the government to work tireless day and night to expedite the completion of criti-
cal infrastructure projects, reduce delays and meet the needs of intended beneficiaries.
Another benefit of the proposed law is that the country will not incur any more penalties and purchase construction materials at inflated prices due to delays.
The millions of pesos saved through this 24/7 operations policy can be reallocated to the government’s public services programs where they can make a big difference.
Contractors who implement the 24/7 working schedule will be given incentives.
Contractors and implementing agencies will be required to coordinate with each other in formulating an efficient schedule that is safe for workers.
In 2018, JICA updated the figures, noting money lost due to traffic congestion had already reached P3.5 billion per day
:28The proposed law seeks to turn the Philippines into a leader in infrastructure development and highlight the country’s ability to innovate, adapt, and adjust with changing conditions. A similar bill filed at the House of Representatives. House Bill 9666, or the proposed Accelerated Infrastructure Development Act of 2023, also seeks to require 24/7 operations for government infrastructure projects.
Under the proposed measure, implementing agencies would be tasked to ensure that suitable working schedules for workers would be adopted, with a minimum of three shifts in a day.
The House bill seeks to address the traffic congestion caused by infrastructure projects near or along major thoroughfares.
The country’s urban centers now face horrible traffic jams, sometimes exacerbated by ongoing construction projects.
Studies have given staggering estimates about how much income is lost due to Metro Manila’s traffic congestion.
In 2014, the Japan International Cooperation Agency said Metro Manila’s traffic jams were costing the Philippine economy P2.4 billion per day in potential income, which can balloon to P6 billion a day by 2030.
In 2018, JICA updated the figures, noting money lost due to traffic congestion had already reached P3.5 billion per day.
Closer collaboration between the executive and legislative branches is a welcome development as this would no doubt facilitate the infrastructure development crucial to long-term economic growth. (Email: ernhil@yahoo.com)

AN INVOICE is issued when goods or products have been delivered or services rendered to a client.
Most of the time a contract or agreement precedes the issuance of an invoice because the former specifies the terms and conditions of the agreement, like the terms of payment, delivery requirements, performance of services, and warranties, among others.
In the case of Chevron Philippines, Inc. v. Alberto Loyuuko, et al., Chevron (then known as Caltex Philippines, Inc.) filed a complaint against Alberto as proprietor, and Achilles and Julieta as officers of the said Noah’s Ark Group of Companies, alleging on various dates from April to Nov. 1997, the latter purchased from the former petroleum products and services (including, but not limited to, bunker fuel oil and pumping/sealing refinery services) (GR 236525, March 29, 2023).
The products were hauled from Chevron’s distribution terminal at the Pandacan Oil Depot in Manila and brought to Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery, Inc. (Noah’s Ark) in Barrio Hulo, Mandaluyong City. The “[s]aid purchases were covered by a total of 105 invoices addressed to the name and account of the said Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery, Inc” (loc. cit.).
The failure of Alberto and Noah’s Ark to pay the purchases despite repeated letter reminders from Chevron prompted the latter to send a last and final demand to settle its outstanding account of P7,381,510.70.
The Supreme Court enumerated ‘three essential elements of a valid contract of sale: ‘a) consent, or meeting of the minds to transfer ownership in exchange for the price; b) [determinate] subject matter; and c) price certain in money or its equivalent’
This amount represented the 105 unsettled invoices, exclusive of interest.
URIOUS” is how various labor groups felt after the announcement the government has approved a measly P35 increase in the daily minimum wage for workers in the National Capital Region.
The wage hike approved by the Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board raised the daily minimum pay from P610 to P645 for non-agricultural workers in Metro Manila.
As expected, the Department of Labor and Employment defended the increase, saying the new rates, which translate to about 5.7 percent increase from the prevailing daily minimum wage rates in the region, remain above the latest regional poverty threshold for a family of five.
The wage order, DOLE said, will directly benefit 988,243 minimum wage earners in Metro Manila, with potential indirect benefits for some 1.7 million full-time wage and salary workers earning above the minimum wage.
.Labor Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said Tuesday those dissatisfied with the P35 per day pay increase approved by the NCR Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Board have until July 11 to
appeal it before the National Wages and Productivity Commission.
The Employers Confederation of the Philippines said they would comply with the new minimum wage hike set in Metro Manila despite the fact that it is more than the P15 to P20 increase they were pushing for.
Labor groups have expressed “strong disappointment” with the wage hike.
We...hope that government can come up with an acceptable pay hike and perhaps non-wage benefits that would allow the labor sector to cope with their economic difficulties
The Nagkaisa labor group emphasized the increase fell significantly short of the P150 daily wage hike proposed by the National Wage Coalition. Nagkaisa pointed out the minimal adjustment represented only 23.33 percent of the necessary wage recovery, or the amount needed to bring the minimum
FOR centuries, cockfighting has been a part of many cultures worldwide, a brutal spectacle where two roosters, equipped with sharp blades, fight to the death.
This bloodsport, rooted in history, often drew crowds that saw it as a test of animal prowess and human betting acumen.
In the Philippines, cockfighting, or “sabong” in Filipino holds a deep cultural significance, yet it has always carried a dark underbelly of violence, addiction, and moral decay.
The advent of e-sabong, the online version of this traditional bloodsport, has transformed an already troubling practice into a widespread social crisis.
The shift from physical arenas to digital platforms has exacerbated the negative impacts, making it accessible to a broader audience, thus amplifying the risks and consequences associated with gambling.
The current news, wherein 125 mayors from Luzon have urgently appealed to President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to maintain the suspension of e-sabong, is a critical juncture.
These local leaders, representing provinces like Aurora, Bataan, Bulacan, Nueva Ecija, Pampanga, Zambales, and Sorsogon, as well as cities such as Angeles and Mabalacat, have courageously stood against powerful forces pushing for the revival of e-sabong.
Their plea is not just a call for maintaining a ban; it is a desperate effort to protect their communities from the manifold dangers that e-sabong entails. The dark side of e-sabong
From an ethical standpoint, cockfighting is already deeply problematic due to the inherent cruelty inflicted on the animals involved.
The transition to e-sabong does not mitigate this cruelty; instead, it perpetuates and monetizes it on a much larger scale.
But beyond the ethical considerations, the implications of e-sabong are vast and deeply troubling.
In his Answer, Alberto explained “no Vinculum Juris exists between him and [Chevron] relative to the alleged transactions/purchases, since he never entered into any agreement with [Chevron] for the same.”
“He also denied any participation in the supposed receipt of the petroleum products hauled to Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery’s premises” (loc. cit.).
On the other hand, Achilles and Julieta in their Answer alleged “they were never parties to, nor participants in, the alleged purchases of [Chevron’s] products, since they were never employees/officers of Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery.”
They alleged “[t]he 105 invoices are actually addressed to Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery, and not to Noah’s Ark Group of Companies” (loc. cit.).
In ruling on the dispute, the Supreme Court, citing Coronel v. Court of Appeals enumerated “three essential elements of a valid contract of sale: ‘a) consent, or meeting of the minds to transfer ownership in
wage to a decent living wage level.
The Federation of Free Workers also slammed the wage hike as “a tactic to divert attention from the growing and fervent advocacy for a P150 daily wage hike through legislation…It displays once again how insensitive the wage boards are to the plight of workers.”
For its part, the Trade Union Congress of the Philippines said the NCR regional wage board “proved once again to be so myopic and opted to protect business profits rather than the bigger societal purpose of the wage increase.
The militant Kilusang Mayo Uno also pointed out the P35 wage increase “is not even enough for a kilo of rice.”
Labor groups had been pressing for more substantial action, including the passage of House Bill 7871, known as the Wage Recovery Act, which seeks a daily across-the-board P150 wage hike for all private sector workers.
House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas of the Makabayan bloc asked: “How can the government expect NCR workers to survive on P645 a day when the Family Living Wage stands at P1,200 and when prices continue to accelerate.”
We can understand the sentiments of the labor sector over the measly wage hike and hope that government can come up with an acceptable pay hike and perhaps non-wage benefits that would allow the labor sector to cope with their economic difficulties.
Why e-sabong must remain suspended
Addiction and Mental Health: Online gambling platforms are notoriously addictive.
The ease of access to e-sabong means that individuals can place bets at any time, from anywhere, leading to widespread addiction. This addiction is not a mere inconvenience; it is a public health crisis that has led to severe indebtedness, broken families, and even suicides.
Economic Consequences: The lure of quick money through e-sabong has driven many into financial ruin.
(The mayors’) plea is not just a call for maintaining a ban; it is a desperate effort to protect their communities from the manifold dangers that e-sabong entails
Stories abound of people, including overseas Filipino workers, losing their hard-earned savings in a matter of days.
This cycle of poverty and debt not only affects the gamblers but also their families, leading to a broader economic downturn in communities.
Crime and Corruption: The rise of esabong has been accompanied by an increase in criminal activities, including kidnappings and disappearances of individuals involved in the industry.
The shadowy underworld that profits from these operations is often linked with other forms of crime and corruption, further destabilizing the rule of law and societal order.
exchange for the price; b) [determinate] subject matter; and c) price certain in money or its equivalent’” (loc. cit.).
“Absent any of these elements, the existence of a perfected contract of sale is essentially negated.
“This is in accordance with Article 1318 of Republic Act 386, otherwise known as the Civil Code of the Philippines, which states that ‘[t]here is no contract unless the following requisites concur: 1) Consent of the contracting parties; 2) Object certain which is the subject matter of the contract; 3) Cause of the obligation which is established.’”
“The fact that Alberto admitted to being the registered proprietor of Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery… brings to the foreground other facts that are easily ascertainable by him…
“For example, the records and files of Noah’s Ark Sugar Refinery relative to the questioned transactions should have been easily produced, or if they were non-existent… relevant employees of the
Call for leadership and integrity
The mayors’ appeal to President Marcos is a testament to their commitment to the well-being of their constituents.
They recognize the far-reaching social and economic ramifications of e-sabong and are valiantly trying to shield their communities from its destructive path. Their stance deserves commendation and robust support from all sectors of society.
President Marcos has the opportunity to take a decisive stand.
By refusing to revive e-sabong, he can signal his dedication to safeguarding the nation’s moral and social fabric.
The decision to uphold the suspension of e-sabong should be seen not as a restriction on economic activity, but as a necessary measure to protect public health, social stability, and ethical standards.
In a world where the lure of easy money often overshadows ethical considerations, it is crucial to prioritize the greater good.
The Philippines stands at a crossroads, where the decision to ban e-sabong permanently could set a precedent for placing human dignity and societal well-being above profit.
As the shadows of e-sabong loom large, the voices of 125 mayors echo a powerful message: the nation must prioritize the well-being of its people over the interests of a few profiteers.
It is imperative for President Marcos to heed this call and uphold the ban on esabong, demonstrating that true leadership lies in protecting the vulnerable and upholding justice.
The future of the Philippines depends not on the revival of an archaic and harmful practice, but on the strength of its leaders to make ethical decisions that benefit all.
Let us hope President Marcos will choose the path of integrity and compassion, securing a better future for generations to come.
refinery to aver the non-existence of any purchase order or delivery of [Chevron’s] bunker fuel” (loc. cit.). But here, Alberto and Noah’s Ark’s (Achilles and Julieta) “own evidentiary efforts [fell] short of the burden of evidence, which is defined under the same Section l, Rule 131 as ‘the duty of a party to present evidence sufficient to establish or rebut a fact in issue to establish a prima facie case.’”
“Even Section 3(d), Rule 131 of the Revised Rules on Evidence makes it a disputable presumption ‘[t]hat a person takes ordinary care of his or her concerns.’”
“But his mere flat-out denials averring no personal knowledge of the questioned transactions, purchases, and deliveries, coupled with his failure to state any affirmative defense with supporting evidence, cannot be considered by the Court as sufficient specific denials. “These are indeed, to his own detriment, admissions” (loc. cit.).

WASHINGTON, DC
– Joe Biden is “absolutely not” pulling out of the White House race, his spokeswoman said Wednesday (Thursday in Manila), as pressure mounted on the president following his disastrous debate performance against Donald Trump.
Panic has gripped Democrats in the wake of last week’s TV debate, and internal rumblings about finding a replacement candidate before November’s election have been amplified by polls showing Trump extending his lead.
The New York Times and CNN reported that Biden, 81, had acknowledged to a key ally that his reelection bid was on the line if he failed to quickly reassure the public that he was still up to the job.
White House spokeswoman Karine JeanPierre rejected those reports outright, insisting Biden has no intention of withdrawing.
“The president is clear-eyed and he is staying in the race,” she told reporters.
In a call with campaign and party staffers, Biden insisted he was going nowhere.
“I’m in this race to the end and we’re going to win because when Democrats unite, we will always win. Just as we beat Donald Trump in 2020, we’re going to beat him again in 2024,” he said, according to a source close to the campaign.
He repeated that message in an emergency meeting at the White House with Democratic governors, who pledged their continued support, attendees said afterward. AFP
Thousands told to flee wildfire
OROVILLE, California – Thousands of people have been ordered to evacuate as a wildfire rages out of control in northern California, with a swathe of the United States in the grip of a “record-breaking and dangerous” heatwave that was complicating firefighting efforts. More than 1,400 hectares of grass and woodland have been consumed since Tuesday when a blaze erupted just outside Oroville.
The town, near the state capital of Sacramento, is just 38 kilometers from Paradise, a community that was razed in 2018 by the deadliest fire in California history, which claimed the lives of 85 people. Garrett Sjolund, fire chief of Butte County, said the area was under a socalled “red flag warning.”
“The conditions out there that are in our county this summer are much different than we’ve experienced the last two summers,” he told reporters. AFP
Israel ‘evaluating’ new Hamas ‘ideas’
THE Hamas militant group said Wednesday it had sent new “ideas” to Qatari mediators aimed at ending the nearly nine-month Gaza war with Israel. Israel confirmed that it was “evaluating” Hamas “comments” on a deal to free its hostages in the Palestinian territory and would reply. With the death toll mounting and conditions worsening daily for Gazans, both sides are under increased international pressure to agree to a ceasefire -- more recently based on a roadmap pushed by US President Joe Biden. Hamas has demanded “a permanent ceasefire and complete withdrawal” of Israeli troops from Gaza. Israel says there can be no end to hostilities until Hamas releases all hostages taken during the Oct. 7 attacks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has also repeatedly vowed that Israel’s Gaza campaign will not cease until Hamas’s military and governing capabilities are destroyed. AFP
LONDON—Title rivals Jannik Sinner and Carlos Alcaraz reached the Wimbledon third round on Wednesday as Japanese superstar Naomi Osaka was demolished on her return to Centre Court after a five-year absence.
Australian Open champion Sinner defeated Italian Davis Cup teammate Matteo Berrettini 7-6 (7/3), 7-6 (7/4), 2-6, 7-6 (7/4) in a three-hour 42-minute duel. Berrettini, the 2021 runner-up, fired 65 winners, including 28 aces, past the top seed and carved out four breaks of serve to two.
However, Sinner calmly recovered from a break down in the fourth set before playing the more composed tiebreak, which ended when Berrettini committed his 48th and final unforced error of the contest.
“It’s very tough we had to face each other in the second round,” said 2023 semi-finalist Sinner, who will take on Miomir Kecmanovic for a place in the last 16.
Alcaraz defeated Australia’s world number 69 Aleksandar Vukic 7-6 (7/5), 6-2, 6-2 on the back of 42 winners.
The third-seeded Spaniard’s only moments of concern came in the first set when he let slip a 5-2 lead and found himself 5-6 down with Vukic serving for the opener.
However, the three-time major winner steadied the ship to race away to victory against a player who got the
better of him in qualifying at the 2020 French Open.
Alcaraz next faces fellow crowdpleaser Frances Tiafoe, the American he defeated in five sets in the semi-finals of the 2022 US Open on his way to his first Grand Slam triumph. ‘Going for him’
“I’m going for him,” said Alcaraz, who is bidding to become just the sixth man after Rod Laver, Bjorn Borg, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic to win the French Open and Wimbledon titles back to back.
“I’m ready to play a really high level of tennis and hopefully take him.”
Tiafoe made the third round by seeing off Borna Coric in straight sets.
Four-time major winner Osaka, playing on Centre Court for the first time since 2019, went down 6-4, 6-1 to America’s Emma Navarro in just 59 minutes.
The 26-year-old former world number one is now ranked at 113 having only returned to the tour in January after giving birth to daughter Shai last year.
“I’m a little disappointed because I wanted to do really well. I feel like I put a lot of time into it. There’s always next year,” said Osaka. AFP
DITO Telecommunity renews its commitment to weaving stronger telecommunities and championing Filipino talents across the country as a proud co-presenter of Palarong Pambansa 2024, the largest sporting event in the country. In partnership with the Department of Education (DepEd) and the local government of Cebu City, DITO supports and celebrates the galing of young athletes as they go all out and compete in various sporting events.
letes from the National Academy of Sports and the Philippine Schools Overseas. The games, slated to run from July 11 to 15, 2024, will be held in Cebu City. A celebration of galing, determination, and diversity
The Palarong Pambansa has long been a proving ground for the skills, determination, and sportsmanship of young athletes. This year’s theme “Beyond Sports” boosts the holistic development of the athletes in sport and education, while helping strengthen the bond among athletes, their families, and peers – an endeavor that DITO fully supports.
AT least two parents wrote The Designated Kit Man regarding their sentiments on the composition of our youth teams that will compete in regional tournaments this month.
The first one is more about the parents’ hopes that their daughter will eventually play for the Philippine Women’s National Football Team or the Filipinas someday.
The other one is about his dismay on how the Philippine Football Federation conducted the tryouts for the youth teams, one of which was attended by his son who came all the way from the United States.
The son was invited by the PFF to attend an Under19 ID Camp at the Rizal Memorial Stadium (RMS) from June 10 to July 19, 2024. If the son gets selected, he will join the team that will compete in the tournament in Indonesia. So the whole family was excited to get the invite and the possibility of their son wearing the country’s colors was too great to ignore.
“It would be a great experience for all of us visiting the Philippines for one month. This is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for him to showcase himself in front of the PFF for one month. It might not happen again,” the father wrote. The father said the PFF assured the family that it would reimburse all his son’s expenses in coming over if he makes the team.
A little background on the kid’s credentials. According to the father, his son has played in several leagues stateside despite being just 17. He is good after making his mark in high-level tournaments against international and professional teams. Because of these, the kid got several offers to play college soccer from several universities before settling on one based in the Southwest. These credentials naturally gave high hopes for the family that the son will
The other side of the pitch
eventually mak e it to the team. Or at the very least, the PFF will give a positive look at the young man. To cut the long story short, th e whole family bought tickets for three t o fly to Manila and booked a month’s stay at a hotel near RMS. The family arrived in Manila mid June. After a week, the son was sent home. The reason, according to the father, was that “his son’s style of game doesn’t fit the philosophy of the U19 team.”
“If that’s the case, we’re ok with the excuse, but we’re made to believe the ID Camp would be from June 10 to July 11. I heard many overseas players came from Europe and the US and they also experienced the same fate. One week and the PFF cut them. Are the local players really better in quality than the other overseas players?” the parent asked.
For context, the son attended the camp for one week. While here, they won one game against a local team playing in the local league. The young man is also a Philippine passport holder as his parents are both Filipinos, the father coming from Region 4, while the mother is from the North. Not from Winterfell, but from Ilocandia.
“I was livid about spending more than $8,000 when all the PFF could do was look at my son for one week. That’s 2-3 hours of training per day and one scrimmage,” he lamented. Despite what they went through, the father ended his letter with this: “What happened to us was like a bad dream, but my son is not totally shutting down the PFF.”
The parent asked me to relay his question on why the PFF did not explicitly specify that a player may be cut just one week into the ID Camp. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to ask this concern during last Monday’s PFF presser. I only got the answer (after I asked the supposed media officer for clarification) that I could attend the presser some 45 minutes before it was about to start. Some members of the media who cover football were fortunate,
they got the invites at least a day before or early Monday morning.
I don’t want to speculate on the reasons why the players are being selected in the youth teams or who among the media gets the invite. They have their reasons. I’m just hoping that favoritism is not among them. For some consolation, three names in the sporting beat, whom I equally admire were also not present during the presser. One of them told me that he didn’t get an invite either.
On a more positive vibe, the Philippine National Men’s Basketball Team’s victory against highly-favored Latvia is indeed a much-needed shot in the arm. The Pinoys led from start to finish to post an 89-80 win to keep their hopes alive for a ticket in the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Coach Tim Cone really did his homework, inspiring and leading the team to play a high level of basketball during the entire game.
The win somehow cushioned the embarrassing 141-45 massacre that our Under-17 team suffered against the United States in the FIBA U-17 World Cup in Turkey on the same night. Many say the outcome was expected, going up against an American team full of NBA prospects. But then again, this

GILAS
Pilipinas
mainstay Jordan Clarkson had a powerful two-word reaction to the team’s stunning victory over world no. 6 Latvia: “Letsss goooo‼‼” Clarkson posted on his official Twitter (X) account.
Although Clarkson wasn’t on the court, his excitement was evident as naturalized Filipino Justin Brownlee led the Philippine team to an impressive 89-80 win over Latvia at the start of their Olympic Qualifying Tournament (OQT) in Riga, Latvia.
Due to his demanding NBA schedule, the Utah Jazz guard could not commit to other Gilas tournaments, including the OQT.
Nonetheless, Clarkson, the son of a Filipina from Bacolor, Pampanga, couldn’t contain his enthusiasm for
Gilas’ triumph over the world’s sixthranked team. Clarkson played for Gilas in last year’s FIBA World Cup.
As of this writing, Gilas is set to face Georgia, needing only to avoid losing by 19 points to advance to the semifinals, bringing them one step closer to securing a slot in the Paris Olympics.
Given Georgia’s earlier loss to Latvia, a victory for Gilas seems within reach.
The Filipinos’ celebration at center court contrasted sharply with the shock and disbelief among Latvian fans, especially after Latvia’s dominant win over Georgia in their first game.
In his first FIBA game against a European team, Brownlee delivered a spectacular performance, nearly achieving a triple-double with 26 points, nine rebounds, and nine assists. Kai Sotto had arguably his best game for Gilas, contributing 18 points and eight rebounds on 70% shooting from the field. June Mar Fajardo also shone, scoring 11 points on just six attempts. Dwight Ramos and Chris Newsome nailed crucial free throws in the final seconds, combining for a total of 22 points. The victory marked the first time the Philippines has defeated a European opponent in a FIBA-sanctioned game since 1960.
Romualdez lauds PH cagers for ‘unwavering spirit’
By Maricel V. Cruz
SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez
on Thursday lauded Gilas Pilipinas for shocking the whole world with their 89-80 win against world no. 6 Latvia in the 2024 FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament early Thursday, saying it was their unwavering spirit to represent the Philippine flag that contributed immensely to the victory.
“It is with great pride and heartfelt congratulations that I commend Gilas Pilipinas for their historic victory against Latvia in an official FIBA tournament. This triumph, ending a 64year drought of wins against European teams, is glaring proof to the unwavering spirit, dedication and perseverance of our national basketball team,” Speaker Romualdez, the leader of 308-strong House of Representatives, said.
The match happened in Arena Riga in Latvia, where Gilas Pilipinas, led by coach Tim Cone, tested their mettle against the formidable European team.
“Hindi lamang ito simpleng panalo sa scoreboard, kundi isang panalo para sa puso ng bawat atletang nangangarap na irepresent ang Pilipinas sa pandaigdigang kompetisyon. Nagsisilbi itong inspirasyon sa maraming Pilipino na magpursige dahil iba ang talento ng mga Pilipino,” said Romualdez.
(This is not just a simple win on the scoreboard, but a win for the heart of every athlete who dreams of representing the Philippines in international competition. It serves as an inspiration to many Filipinos to persevere because Filipinos have different talents)
He said that win of Gilas Pilipinas highlights the resilience and tenacity of its players, under the guidance of their Coach Cone.
“The match against Latvia showcased our team’s skill and grit. Gilas Pilipinas played with a passion and intensity that inspired all who watched. This victory is a shining example of our players’ ability to rise to the occasion and overcome the formidable challenge posed by a strong European team,” Romualdez expressed.
He declared that as Speaker of the House of Representatives, he assures the continued support for Gilas Pilipinas and all athletes in terms of benefits through legislation.
“We are committed to providing the necessary resources and assistance to help our national team reach even greater heights. Whether through legislative measures or collaborative efforts with relevant organizations, we will ensure that our athletes receive the support they need to excel on the international stage,” Romualdez noted.
“To the players, coaching staff, and everyone involved with Gilas Pilipinas, we extend our deepest gratitude and admiration. Your dedication and hard work have brought immense pride to our nation. May this victory be the first of many, as you continue to inspire us with your exceptional performance and unyielding spirit.”
BACOLOD—Bukidnon’s Simon Wahing overcame early challenges and survived a late stumble to clinch the boys’ 16-18 category title at the ICTSI JPGT Visayas Series 3 with a 78, foiling Bryce Lacida by three strokes at the Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club yesterday (Thursday). The 16-year-old Wahing’s performance not only earned him a wire-to-wire victory with a 307 total but also advanced him to the Philippine Junior Match Play Championship. He topped the premier division in the three-leg Visayas series organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. with 27 points, building on his runner-up finish to absentee Patrick Tambalque at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Murcia last week.
Iloilo leg winner John Rey Oro secured the other slot in the national finals with 25 points, clinching the berth by placing third with a 311 after a second straight 75.
Wahing, who overcame a double-bogey on No. 15 and bucked a bogey-bogey windup, completed the 72-hole tournament in impressive fashion, pulling away by five with a frontside 37. Lacida settled for sec-
ond with a 310, also after an eight-over card. Wahing endured the pressure from Lacida but remained confident throughout.
“I struggled at the front and became nervous when Lacida moved closer,” said Wahing. Nevertheless, he remained optimistic about his performance, expecting to win after a failed bid in Murcia.
Earlier, Dominique Gotiong turned the final 18 holes of the girls’ competition into a virtual practice round and coronation walk. She finished with an 80 for a total score of 326, far ahead of Iloilo leg titlist Rhiena Sinfuego, who totaled 395 after a 93. Breanna Rojas placed third with a 419 after shooting a 105.
It was a dominant two-week display of shotmaking and skills for the 16-year-old Gotiong, who also crushed the field in Murcia. Though she did not meet her target of improving on her third round 78, the Cebuana golfer won by a wide margin despite fumbling with three double bogeys and four bogeys.

FEDERAL Express Corp., one of the world’s largest express transportation companies, said Thursday it will expand its operations in its Clark gateway.
FedEx signed an agreement with Luzon International Premiere Airport Development (LIPAD), operator and manager of Clark International Airport, for the construction of a new facility, which is set to offer enhanced capabilities that will benefit local businesses looking to amplify their presence in international markets and support the growing demand for e-commerce, freight and cold-chain shipments across the Asia Pacific region.
The new FedEx facility, once completed, will be more than double the size of its current facility. The gateway will further boost support for both importers and exporters including small-and-medium enterprises (SMEs) and heavyweight freight shippers with greater and more reliable access to and from international markets.
The strategic expansion aligns with the vision of Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA), Clark Development Corp. (CDC), and LIPAD to transform Clark International Airport (CRK) into a premier global civil aviation logistics hub for international cargo.
THE government’s outstanding debt escalated by P1.19 trillion, or 8.4 percent, to reach a record P15.35 trillion as of end-May 2024 on continued borrowings and depreciation of the peso, data from the Bureau of the Treasury show.
It said that on a month-on-month basis, debt increased by P330.39 billion, or 2.2 percent, from the end-April 2024 level of P15.02 trillion primarily due to the impact of local currency depreciation on the valuation of foreign-currency denominated debt.
The Treasury said of the total debt stock in May, 31.96 percent was external debt and 68.04 percent represented domestic debt.
Domestic debt went up by P134.34 billion, or 3.3 percent, to P10.44 trillion as of end-May from the previous month.
“The increase resulted from the P131.66 billion net issuance of
government securities and P2.68 billion effect of peso depreciation on foreign-currency denominated domestic debt,” the Treasury said.
It said that since the beginning of the year, domestic debt has increased by P424.91 billion, or 4.2 percent. It also went up by P854.33 billion, or 8.9 percent, on a year-on-year basis.
Meanwhile, national government external debt reached P4.90 trillion as of end-May, P196.04 billion, or 4.2 percent higher than the end-April 2024 level of P4.70 trillion.
“For May, the increase in external debt can be attributed to P122.04 billion in net foreign loan availment and
P76.94 billion in upward revaluation of US dollar-denominated debt,” the Treasury said.
Favorable third-currency movement provided a P2.94 billion downward revaluation effect.
Foreign debt also increased by P306.42 billion, or 6.7 percent, from its end-December 2023 level and by P339.15 billion, or 7.4 percent, from a year ago.
Government-guaranteed obligations decreased by P5.85 billion, or 1.6 percent, from the end-April 2024 level to P350.20 billion. The decline was due to net repayment on both domestic and external guarantees amounting to P4.36 billion and P3.55 billion, respectively.
Third-currency adjustments against the US dollar further trimmed P0.62 billion, dampening the P2.68 billion increment caused by peso depreciation against the US dollar.

THE Foreign Buyers Association of the Philippines (FOBAP) said the Philippines and China should include trade discussions in diplomatic talks to des-escalate tensions in the West Philippine Sea.
FOBAP president Robert Young emphasized the importance of including trade discussions alongside diplomatic efforts to ensure continued economic benefits for both nations.
He said China is the Philippines second-biggest trade partner. Young also acknowledged the challenges facing the sector in 2024 as the ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Israel continue to disrupt supply chains, prompting FOBAP to explore new markets in South America and the Middle East to supplement production volume.
FOBAP members export to established markets like the US, Canada, the European Union (EU) and the As-
sociation of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Garment exporters are already receiving orders from these traditional markets alongside the new ones, but overall volume is still lower compared to the level in previous years.
Young said the government should try harder to secure more free trade agreements (FTAs) and address high energy costs through subsidies for the export sector.

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) advised the public to be vigilant against individuals who are unlawfully representing themselves as BSP officers, employees, offices and units. The said individuals use the name of BSP employees and information, such as their name and signature or the logo of BSP, in their letters, emails, websites or social media accounts to obtain information in order to perpetrate scams and other fraudulent activities, it said in an advisory.
In pursuit of positioning the Philippines as a leading source for creative goods and services in the region and globally, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) spotlights the country’s creative economy in the second run of International Culture, Tourism and Intangible Cultural Heritage Exhibition (ICTICHE) in Hong Kong from June 21 to 23, 2024. The Philippine Trade and Investment Center-Hong Kong (PTIC-HK) led by vice consul and commercial attaché Roberto Mabalot Jr. organized the Philippine delegation and exhibition that featured artworks, accessories, apparel and various products from over 35 Filipino artists and micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
It said the public should verify the authenticity of the messages they receive or the transactions they are carrying out with supposed BSP representatives. The BSP also urged the public to refrain from providing their personal and financial accounts or information to the said individuals and to avoid sending money to unverified or suspicious sources. The act of misrepresenting the BSP or its officers or units is punishable under the law. If the public encounters the poser accounts of these individuals, they may report them to BSP’s contact details, the bank said.
cent higher than ASEAN competitors. This makes it difficult to secure sufficient quantities for production,” he said. The extension of the EU’s Generalized Scheme of Preferences Plus (GSP+) program is also seen as a potential revenue booster for the sector.
“In terms of productivity, we are well-prepared with a sufficient workforce due to the current decrease in production orders,” Young said.
THE National Economic and Development Authority expects the Philippines to graduate to upper middleincome country (UMIC) status next year after its gross national income (GNI) per capita exceeded the 2023 target under the Philippine Development Plan (PDP) 2023-2028.
The World Bank earlier reported that the country’s GNI per capita reached a historical high of $4,230 in 2023, marking a 7.1-percent increase from the preceding year. This surpassed the 2023 target range of $4,130 to $4,203 GNI per capita set in the PDP 2023-2028, according to NEDA.
“Achieving the GNI per capita target for 2023 solidifies our trajectory toward attaining UMIC status within the next two years,” NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan said.
“However, our mission is far from complete. While we, of course, welcome news of such progress, what matters more to us is that the fruits of economic growth—opportunities, better jobs, and higher incomes—are felt by all Filipinos, especially the poor,” he said.
The World Bank earlier said the Philippines was poised to reach the UMIC status by 2026.
The World Bank defines UMIC economies as those with GNI per capita ranging between $4,516 and $14,005 for the fiscal year 2025. Darwin G. Amojelar
Stock index tops 6,500 ahead of inflation data
THE country’s main composite index breached the 6,500 level Thursday ahead of the release of June inflation rate data.
The bellwether Philippine Stock Exchange index closed at 6,507.49, up by 57.46 points, or 0.89 percent, from the previous trading, while the wider all-shares index added 20.74 points, or 0.59 percent, to end at 3,515.87.
Philstocks Financial Inc. research analyst Mikhail Plopenio said the PSEi joined other Asian markets’ rally, which took cues from Wall Street’s record performance.
“Aside from positive spillovers, foreign inflow also sided the local bourse’s climb as foreign investors were net buyers with net inflow of P462.9 million,” Plopenio said. Value turnover remained thin at P4.04 billion, lower than the year-todate average of P4.98 billion.
Except for the holding firms which retreated 0.04 percent, all sectors ended in the positive territory.
Services advanced by 1.78 percent, while financials climbed 1.72 percent and mining and oil by 1.11 percent.
Property also went up by 0.60 percent, while industrial inched up by 0.03 percent.
Asian equities rose and the dollar slipped further on Thursday as investors welcomed more data pointing to a softening labour market that gives the Federal Reserve room to cut interest rates, with another key jobs report due.
The advances saw Tokyo end at alltime highs following another record day on Wall Street, while national elections in Britain and France are also on the radar over the next few days.
After a recent poor run for stocks, the mood on trading floors has lightened this week thanks to figures indicating the US labour market was tightening and inflation retreating. Figures on Wednesday showed the private sector created fewer jobs than expected last month, while first-time and continuing claims for jobless benefits also topped forecasts.
A survey also showed services sector activity contracted in June at the fastest pace in four years.
That all came after news Friday that the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index -- the Fed’s preferred gauge of prices -- had dipped further in May.

Cosco said in a disclosure to the stock exchange Thursday its board approved the planned acquisition in a meeting on July 3, 2024.

Cosco did not disclose the acquisition cost, but said the price was below 10 percent of its total book value as of end-March 2024.
MRDC, formed in 2014, is the developer of the Matuno river hydroelectric power plant, a 8.66-megawatt run-of-river hydroelectric power plant in Bambang, Nueva Vizcaya.
The project is covered by a hyrdo power service contract with the Department of Energy. The power station draws energy from the Matuno River, a tributary of the Magat Dam.
MRDC is owned by Magis Energy Holdings Corp., a holding company that owns several renewable projects in the Visayas.
The proposed acquisition will be submitted for the approval of the Philippine Competition Commission, if applicable.

PH economy loses hundreds of billions due to tobacco smuggling—study
THE illicit cigarette trade remains a major national concern, significantly impacting farmers’ livelihoods and the economy.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. instructed the Bureau of Customs (BOC), the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) and the Department of Trade and Industry to ramp up their efforts in curbing the smuggling of tobacco and vape products to protect the country’s tobacco industry and its farmers.
A study titled “Smuggling of Cigarettes and Other Tobacco Products and Its Effects on Tobacco Producers in the Philippines” underscored the importance of collaboration with agencies including the National Tobacco Administration and the Department of Trade and Industry and strict enforcement
of anti-smuggling laws as crucial measures in identifying opportunities for tobacco-based industries and upholding industry integrity, ultimately bolstering farmers’ incomes, and safeguarding against illicit trade.
The study revealed that the local tobacco industry incurred substantial losses from smuggling, totaling 41,180,676 kg valued at $224,586,095 from 2018 to 2022.
A study published by the University of Asia and the Pacific, “Illicit Cigarette Trade in the Philippines: Economic and Social Impacts of Weak Regulatory Enforcement,” also reported that illicit trade from 2018 to 2022 caused the GDP to decline by P378.9 billion, leading to a drop of about P592.1 bil-

DTI asks online stores to end illegal vape sales
THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) called on major emarketplaces operating in the Philippines to eliminate illegal vape product sales on their platforms. The DTI emphasized the responsibilities and obligations of such e-marketplaces under the Internet Transactions Act (ITA).
It met on June 27 representatives of Tiktok, Shopee, Lazada and other e-marketplaces and reminded them that non-compliance could result in the issuance of compliance orders and penalties under the ITA.
“E-marketplaces must play a crucial role in combating the proliferation of uncertified and illegal vape products. We call upon these platforms to fully implement their responsibilities under the Internet Transactions Act by proactively preventing the distribution of illegal vape products,” DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual said.
Section 32 of the implementing rules and regulations (IRR) of Republic Act No. 11967, or the Internet Transactions Act of 2023, mandates e-marketplaces to require merchants to submit appropriate registrations and permits and to establish contractual obligations between the platform and the merchant.
Meanwhile, the e-marketplaces collectively agreed to voluntarily take down vape listings while they clean up their sites of illegal products.
They also committed to implementing Know Your Customer (KYC) procedures to ensure all online sellers possess the necessary registration and permits.
DTI Undersecretary Amanda Nograles welcomed the platforms’ cooperation, emphasizing the department’s focus on the full enforcement of the vape law in conjunction with the ITA.

Meralco ramps up campaign to prevent electric meter theft
MANILA Electric Company (Meralco) said it ramped up its campaign against electric meter theft following the increasing number of incidents of stolen meters and electrical wires being sold in various online platforms.
Meralco said it is actively working with the Philippine National Police and other government agencies to combat and prevent theft given the threat the illegal activity poses to the integrity and safety of the electricity service the distribution utility delivers to its customers.

The toll holiday, implemented from July 1, 2024, aimed to ease the financial burden on motorists amid rising fuel costs. However, this resulted in an estimated P300-million revenue loss for CIC, according to Christopher Daniel Lizo, chief finance officer of
GRAB Philippines has launched a new service guaranteeing on-time riders to the airport with its GrabAirport fleet.
“Having served the Philippines for over a decade, we at Grab have deepened our understanding of the distinct needs of our Filipino passengers. One such need that stands out is their requirement for reliable airport transportation. Recognizing this, we are enhancing the experience of airport rides on Grab with the launch of Advance Booking,” EJ Dela Vega, Grab Philippines head of Mobility said.
“Our new Grab Advance Booking product goes beyond offering mere airport transfers – it provides travelers the peace of mind they deserve. This new service has been engineered to have guaranteed ontime rides every time, enabling every Filipino traveler to leave their homes with the confidence they’ll have a ride to make their flight on time,” he added. The worries about catching a flight in the wee hours of the morning or during the peak of the metro bustle are a thing of the past with Grab Advance Booking. This new Grab mobility service touts guaranteed rides every time. Accessing Grab Advance Booking is a walk in the park. Passengers can select “Advance Booking” under the Grab transport page. They can then enter the date and time of their ride, along with their pick-up location and the specific airport terminal for drop-off.
Grab has also implemented protective measures to safeguard the income of the dedicated fleet for Advance Booking. These measures are designed to mitigate the impact of last-minute cancellations by passengers, specifically those made less than an hour before the scheduled pick-up time. During such cancellations, the passenger will be charged the full fare of the ride. The same policy applies when a passenger is unreachable or hasn’t arrived 15 minutes past the scheduled time.
Metro Pacific Tollways Corp. (MPTC), CIC’s parent firm.
The extension applies to the concession period granted to CIC for operating Cavitex.
The decision follows President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ‘s announcement of a toll-free period for all Cavitex expressway segments during the inauguration of Cavitex C5 Link Segment 2. These include exits in Kawit, Paranaque, the C5 Link segment with Merville and Taguig exits and the newly opened Segment 2 (Sucat Interchange).
Ignacio said CIC is committed to expediting the completion of the two connector roads of Cavitex.
DMCI, under a P3.3-billion contract, agreed to meet the construction deadline to finish Segment 3B, the final portion of the Cavitex C5 Link, a six-lane 2-kilometer expressway connecting Cavitex at Paranaque in the west and C5 Road Taguig in the east. The segment will enable motorists to travel from Cavite to Taguig, bypassing a number of service roads.
EEI will complete the 1.3-km. dual 2-lane Cavitex-Calax Link
Extension also in August 2025, envisioned to stimulate commerce and industry in Cavite, Laguna and Metro Manila.
Ignacio earlier met the right-of-way (ROW) acquisition team to resolve all issues to ultimately clear the way for the road alignments and access roads.
Progress has been made in CIC’s mix of persuasive initiatives addressed to project affected persons (PAPs) made up of legal, financial and communication strategies, Ignacio said.
The ROW status of Segment 3B of the C5 Link stands at 70.60 percent, leaving the CIC ROW project managers with only 29.4 percent balance to finish the job, Ignacio said.
The progress of the Cavitex-Calax Link ROW acquisition is ahead with 77.14 percent, leaving CIC with only 22.86 percent to clear the way for the alignment.
“With this new impetus from the Palace, we will beat our construction deadline – and the winner is every motorist and passenger south of Metro Manila and beyond,” Ignacio said. Darwin G. Amojelar
PHILIPPINE Airlines (PAL) has reopened its Clark to Basco route last July 2 2024 in a move to strengthen its domestic network.
The restored route now operates four times weekly (every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday) via PR 2688 (Clark – Basco) departing Clark International Airport at 11:00 AM and arriving in Basco at 12:35PM.
The Basco-Clark return service operates via PR 2689 on the same days, leaving the island at 01:00 PM, and touching down in the Central Luzon gateway at 2:35 PM.
This direct service to picturesque Basco complements PAL’s daily Manila – Basco service. The PAL Clark gate-

“It gives us great pride to meet the demand for flights out of Central Luzon, a strategic gateway to Northern, Central and Southern Philippines,” Rabbi Vincent Ang, PAL Express president said.
“From Clark, leisure and business travelers can likewise connect to other PAL domestic destinations via our Cebu hub,” he added. For his part, CLARK LIPAD President and Chief Executive Officer Noel Manankil said, “We are thrilled to once again connect Clark to the breathtaking beauty of Batanes. “

FEDEX, a leading global shipping company, launched new resources to empower Filipino small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) to thrive in the booming e-commerce markets of China and Japan. China and Japan are the biggest markets in the Asia Pacific region with robust cross border e-commerce activity, providing extensive business opportunities for SMEs. However, foreign merchants need to understand the unique digital landscape, consumer appetites and logistics needs of each market to build a sustainable
business model.
“Finding new customers in international markets is a smart approach for SMEs wanting to drive consumer and revenue growth. Digital channels lower the barriers for market entry, but the best business strategies are underpinned by smart, local market insights. That’s critical in sectors like e-commerce which move incredibly quickly,” Kawal Preet, president, Asia Pacific, FedEx said.
“China and Japan are strategically important markets in the APAC region. We’ve built our local knowledge based on our decades-long operations which is a critical component of the e-commerce experience. We’re also integrated in platforms and processes to provide a seamless experience for both merchants and consumers. That gives us a unique viewpoint on the latest local know-how to help e-tailers operate more effectively,” Preet added.

How Lian Paz and John Cabahug crossed paths and flourished in life and love
IT WAS a sunny noon in Cebu last June when I had the pleasure of being introduced to former EB Babes member Lian Paz and her fiancé, businessman and public servant Councilor John Cabahug, over lunch. The couple exuded warmth and hospitality even from afar, making me feel like an old friend.
crush of her best friend in grade school. Little did she know that John had always harbored feelings for her. This serendipitous reconnection led to an endorsement deal that blossomed into something much deeper. John, who had always admired Lian from afar, fell for her all over again.
public consumption. “We enhanced the packaging and the taste so we could market it,” John shared.
“Our target market is made up of people who want to engage in a healthy lifestyle. This [V Drink] helps in preventing health problems from surfacing in the future. Consistency is key,” Lian explained.
It also helps that their bond is founded on strong friendship and admiration.
“She’s my best friend. I don’t hide anything from her. I am always excited to tell her everything,” John beamed with pride.
As we sat down to talk, I knew I was in for a delightful experience. Listening to their love story firsthand for more than an hour was not only heartwarming but also incredibly “kilig” (a Filipino term to refer to the giddy joy of romantic excitement) and inspiring.
Fated on Facebook
Lian and John’s love story began long before they even realized it. They were grade school classmates, sharing innocent childhood memories. However, life took them on separate paths until one fateful day when they reconnected through Facebook. During that time, John’s family business, a beauty brand, was in search of an endorser. John, who had been seeing the news of Lian’s controversial separation from her husband of four years, actor Paolo Contis, remembered her and the crush he had on her back in their school days.
Meeting Lian’s daughters from her previous marriage only strengthened his love for her. He saw them as angels and aspired to be a father figure to them. Over time, Lian’s daughters transitioned from calling him Tito [Uncle] to Daddy, symbolizing the profound bond that had formed within their blended family. Eventually, John and Lian had a daughter of their own, and also in their custody is John’s daughter from his previous relationship.
Partners in life and business
The couple’s partnership extends beyond their personal lives and into their professional endeavors. They ventured into the health drink market with V drink, their brand which is now available in two flavors: Tawa Tawa and Malunggay (Moringa). This health drink was initially formulated by John’s father, a chemist, upon the request of a doctor-friend. John’s father is also the mastermind behind SkinMate, the family’s successful beauty business brand.
For Lian, John was a familiar name – he was the out about the
V Drink eventually became a commercial brand because of John’s entrepreneurial mind. Finding malunggay drink formulation for a private clinic, John worked on distributing it for
“Just like in business, you go through struggles, but in the long run, if you keep on pushing and remain consistent, you’ll get there.”
Right now, the couple is focused on expanding its distribution and coming up with new variants. V Drink is also currently available internationally. In the Philippines, it is available in stores, pharmacies, and online platforms, including Facebook.
Lian and John’s business skills don’t stop there.
John’s father, an ever-enterprising spirit, created a fairytale-themed resort and hotel in Cebu called the Enchanted Mountain. This whimsical destination, described to give Disneyland feels by those who have visited, along with another hotel venture (yet more exclusive) called Vista Azul in the northern part of Cebu City, adds to the family’s business portfolio.
Future together
“We’re really like that. We talk a lot. But I am more of a listener. He’s the talkative one,” Lian pointed out reality, giggling. I asked John if Lian still gives him the butterflies, and he quickly responded, “All the time.”
In the same way, Lian gushes over her partner’s sweet gestures, explaining that it is in the small and simple things he does that she finds kilig
Of fate and faith
After sheer fate brought them together, Lian and John attribute much of their success and strength to their faith. They are active members of the Christ’s Commission Fellowship (CCF), a Christian church that plays a significant role in their lives. Their faith guides their decisions and helps them navigate the complexities of their blended family and business ventures.
Despite the prolonged and pending process of Lian’s annulment, the couple remains true to their commitment to each other and their family. They have been together for 11 years and the love and respect permeate every aspect of their lives, from their personal interactions to their business decisions.
Their journey is a beautiful reminder that love can find us in the most unexpected ways and that with faith and perseverance, we can overcome any obstacle. Lian and John’s story is not just a showcase of their love for each other, but also of their shared vision and commitment to building a life filled with purpose and joy.
Having aligned goals fuels their relationship.
