AGROUP of senators led by Senate President Francis Escudero on Sunday urged Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR) chairperson Alejandro Tengco to identify the former Cabinet official allegedly involved in illicit Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs).
Joining Escudero in this call are Senate Minority Leader Aquilino Pimentel III, and Senators Joel Villanueva, Sherwin Gatchalian, and Risa Hontiveros. They argue that revealing this person’s identity is crucial to avoid casting a shadow of suspicion over all past high-ranking government officials. Escudero demanded the information. Otherwise, he said the Senate committees led by Hontiveros and Gatchalian would be tasked to ferret

THE Integrated Bar of the Philippines (IBP) on Sunday called on the government to provide protection to Filipino fishermen in the face of China's aggres-
sive behavior in the disputed maritime territories in the West Philippine Sea.
"Filipino fishermen have the legal right to go fishing within the 200 miles Philippine Exclusive Economic Zone; while the Philippine government is duty-bound to protect our fishermen inside this zone," the IBP said in a statement.
The call was made a day after the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) reported that a Chinese coast guard vessel tried to block the rescue of Filipino fishermen whose boat exploded 17 nautical miles off Scarborough Shoal (Bajo de Masinloc) on Saturday.

SENATOR Risa Hontiveros has rallied behind the plan of former Senator Leila de Lima--who was jailed for seven years due to trumped-up drug charges--to file countercharges against former President Rodrigo Duterte and others.
By Ram Superable
"I really think she should consider that,” Hontiveros said, adding "I know that this is almost naturally or automatically to become her life's mission, to be given justice."
She said De Lima is only one of the victims of the Duterte administration’s bloody war on illegal drugs. Being the most popular victim of the Duterte drug war, De Lima has also been vocal in seeking justice for the other victims. "She has always been calling for justice for those widowed or those who lost their loved ones in Duterte's extra-judicial killings," Hontiveros said.

ALBAY Rep. Edcel Lagman on Sunday asserted that “nowhere in the present 1987 Constitution and the previous 1935 and 1972 Constitution, and even in the Malolos Constitution, is there a provision which prohibits the Congress from enacting an absolute divorce law.”
Despite the constitutional precepts on the sanctity and inviolability of marriage and protection for the family, the Constitution by not prohibiting absolute divorce recognizes that marriage is basically a social institution which is vulnerable to human frailties which destroy beyond repair marriages, he said.
“No less than the commissioners of the 1986 Constitutional Commission (Concom) led by Fr. Joaquin Bernas had a unanimous consensus that Congress can enact an absolute divorce law," he added.
No commissioners then posited a dissenting view, he noted.
“In fact, Muslim Filipinos who are covered by the Constitution are granted the right to divorce and remarry. Moreover, the Family Code itself provides for relative divorce by judicially recognizing the separation of spouses from bed and board without the right to remarry. The ban on absolute divorce with the right to remarry spawns sinners, criminals and crimes as separated spouses cohabit with other partners in adultery and concubinage and give birth to hundreds of thousands of illegitimate children,” Lagman said in a statement.
The sanctity of marriage does not institute an iron-clad union which fetters, impairs and destroys, he pointed out.
Couples married under Catholic rites who separate do not commit sacrilege or sin, said Lagman.
He also said that even the Catholic Church has its own its canonical divorce, which is euphemistically called “dissolution of marriage” based on psychological incapacity.
The fact that all Catholic countries worldwide, except the Philippines and the Vatican, have legalized divorce is a veritable testament that divorce does not infringe on the doctrine of the Catholic Church.
“No less than Jesus Christ in the Bible allowed a husband to divorce an unchaste wife, and St. Paul permitted a believer to divorce a non-believer who has deserted him,” the lawmaker said.

Although the weekly publication will shut down its storied print edition, Baguio Midland Courier invites the public to “stay connected with us through any means possible, as we are hopeful that new opportunities will arise, allowing us to continue our mission in different forms.”
The last three issues of the Baguio Midland Courier are slated for publication on July 7, 14, and 21.

The PCG said that two China Coast Guard vessels tried to prevent BRP Sindangan from conducting a rescue operation even after they were informed of the emergency.
Rear Admiral Armando Balilo, spokesman of the PCG, however, said that the vessel was able to rescue the fisherman and tow the half-submerged boat toward Subic in Zambales .
The eight rescued fishermen were given food, and drinking water. Two were given first aid and medication due to second to third-degree burns suffered in the explosion.

Interviewed at DWIZ last Saturday, De Lima said her legal team will file charges against Duterte and the latter’s justice secretary, Vitaliano Aguirre II for the fabricated drug charges that led to her detention.
“They smeared my reputation. I was detained and deprived of my liberty for almost seven years. It is clear that the charges were upon Duterte’s orders while Aguirre was his chief enforcer to persecute me,” she said.

"I did. I filed the resolution. I, too, have a question. Who is the former Philippine National Police chief who signed the memorandum circular that became the basis of the bloody and anti-poor war on drugs?
The answer: that senator who does not want to show up and smuggles in," he said.

NORTH Korea denounced on Sunday joint military drills by South Korea, Japan and the United States, calling them an “Asian version of NATO” and warning of “fatal consequences.”
It comes a day after the allies wrapped up three-day exercises, dubbed “Freedom Edge,” in ballistic missile and air defenses, anti-submarine warfare and defensive cyber training.
US, South Korean and Japanese leaders agreed at a trilateral summit last year to conduct annual drills as a sign of unity in the face of North Korea’s nuclear threats and China’s rising regional influence.
“We strongly denounce... provocative military muscle-flexing against the DPRK,” Pyongyang’s foreign ministry said in a statement carried by the state-run KCNA news agency Sunday, referring to the North’s official name.
“The US-Japan-ROK relations have taken on the full-fledged appearance of an Asian-version NATO,” it said, warning of “fatal consequences.”
“The DPRK will never overlook the moves of the US and its followers to strengthen the military bloc.”
The latest joint drills involved Washington’s nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Theodore Roosevelt, Tokyo’s guided-missile destroyer JS Atago, and Seoul’s KF-16 fighter jet.
Pyongyang has always decried similar combined exercises as rehearsals for an invasion.
The two Koreas have meanwhile been caught in a tit-for-tat balloon campaign in recent weeks, with Pyongyang sending trash-filled balloons southwards in retaliation to similar missives sent northwards from the South carrying pro-Seoul propaganda.
South Korea has also grown anxious over the North’s warming relations with its isolated neighbour Russia.
North Korea is accused of breaching arms control measures by supplying weapons to Russia to use in its war in Ukraine, and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a summit with leader Kim Jong Un in Pyongyang this month in a show of unity. AFP
Biden reassures big-money donors after debate debacle
OCEANPORT — US President Joe Biden attended a triple-header of campaign fundraisers Saturday, seeking to reassure high-dollar donors he can still win reelection in November despite a debate performance that sparked panic among many Democrats.
Accompanying him at the fundraisers in New York and New Jersey was First Lady Jill Biden, who has fiercely defended her 81-year-old husband amid calls for him to step aside.
“Joe isn’t just the right person for the job -- he’s the only person for the job,” she told one gathering, which featured a-list actors Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick among the co-hosts.
The president is facing a wave of doubts following Thursday night’s debate against Republican rival Donald Trump, after he frequently stumbled over his words and lost his train of thought -- exacerbating fears about his age and mental acuity.
Many political commentators called for Biden to stand down following the debate, including The New York Times editorial board.
The Washington Post’s editorial board meanwhile urged him to do some soul-searching over the weekend after his “calamitous” debate performance raised “legitimate questions about whether he’s up for another four years in the world’s toughest job.” AFP

TEHRAN — The sole reformist in Iran’s presidential election, Masoud Pezeshkian, will face the ultraconservative Saeed Jalili in a runoff, authorities said on Saturday, following a vote marred by historically low turnout. Pezeshkian secured 42.4 percent of the vote, while Jalili, a former nuclear negotiator, came second with 38.6 percent, according to figures from Iran’s elections authority. Conservative parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf was next with 13.8 percent, while the only other candidate, conservative cleric Mostafa Pourmohammadi, got less than one percent.
“None of the candidates could garner the absolute majority of the votes,” electoral authority spokesman Mohsen Eslami said.
In his first post-election remarks, Pezeshkian thanked his supporters and urged them to vote again next Friday “to save the country from poverty, lies, discrimination and injustice”.
“I hope your presence will be the basis of a new voice for change in attitude, behaviour, conversation and in the distribution and allocation of resources,” he added in a video published on the website of the reformist newspaper Etemad. AFP

MEGAWORLD Corporation, a name synonymous with innovation and integrated townships in the Philippines, boasts a remarkable journey spanning over three decades. From its humble beginnings in 1989, the company has transformed the real estate landscape, leaving an indelible mark on Metro Manila and beyond.
The company’s vision encapsulates the company’s commitment to creating buildings and vibrant communities that cater to Filipinos’ evolving needs.
The cornerstone of Megaworld’s strategy lies in the development of integrated townships. These self-contained communities meticulously blend residential spaces, office buildings, retail centers, and leisure facilities. This “live-work-play-learn” concept allows residents to seamlessly transition between different aspects of their lives within a single, well-managed environment.
By promoting townships, Megaworld is not simply building structures; they are shaping the future of urban living in the Philippines. These integrated communities cater to a wide range of demographics, offering something for everyone–from young professionals to established families to retirees.
CHANGING METRO MANILA’S LANDSCAPE
One of Megaworld’s most popular townships is McKinley Hill, which spans 50 hectares in Taguig. This vibrant community embodies the live-work-play concept, featuring upscale residences, premium office spaces, world-class leisure destinations, and a unique architectural blend that draws inspiration from Spain and Italy.
For those seeking an ultra-luxurious experience, McKinley West provides an exclusive gated village with state-of-the-art security and smart home technology in its condominiums. This 34.5-hectare township also offers seamless connectivity to key areas within Metro Manila.

Megaworld’s reach extends beyond business districts. ArcoVia City, a 12.3-hectare development, caters to those seeking a blend of modern luxuries and lush greenery. Residents enjoy residential towers, a dynamic shopping haven, cutting-edge office spaces, and the iconic Arco de Emperador monument.
Another rising star in Bacolod City is Northill Gateway. This 53-hectare emerging lifestyle district boasts the Philippines’ first Las Vegasinspired welcome marker and Negros’ first full-scale McDonald’s NXTGEN store. Upscale residences are complemented by upcoming retail developments and leisure amenities, making it a destination for living and entertainment.
Venturing further, Megaworld offers a cosmopolitan oasis at the 25-hectare Newport City.
This development features luxury residences, office spaces, world-class hotels, the expansive Newport Mall, and the entertainment options of Newport World Resorts. Newport City provides a grand atmosphere for those seeking a luxurious lifestyle.
Besides its live-work-play concept, Megaworld also highlights cultural heritage with the Lucky Chinatown development, which presents a unique opportunity.

Megaworld has redefined living in Metro Manila. Megaworld offers a place for everyone to live, work, and play, from business districts to cultural centers and entertainment hubs.
GOING BEYOND THE METRO
Megaworld’s influence through its unique townships extends beyond the Metro Manila border. South of Manila lies Megaworld’s most extensive integrated township, Southwoods City. Sprawling across a vast 561 hectares, this self-contained community embodies the “live-work-play-learn” concept. Residents can find themed condominiums, a charming shopping mall, the Manila Southwoods Golf Course, office towers, a church, a school, and even a medical facility here.
Venturing further south, The Hamptons Caliraya offers luxury living inspired by New York’s Hamptons. This 300-hectare lakeside township features spacious lots with private dock options, a charming clubhouse, and a private marina, all set against the breathtaking backdrop of Mount Banahaw.
In Cavite, Megaworld’s Arden Botanical Estate prioritizes eco-friendly living throughout its 251 hectares for those seeking a sustainable lifestyle.
Residents can enjoy flower farms, gardens, tree-lined roads, water features, and unique amenities like a tram system, a home gardening depot, and dedicated bike lanes. Another township in the province is Maple Grove, which aims to become Cavite’s central business district. This 140-hectare development boasts a
“Makati-inspired” commercial district alongside top-notch residences, green spaces, and a lifestyle mall. Meanwhile, Suntrust Ecotown, also in Cavite, exemplifies the live-work-play concept by seamlessly integrating an industrial zone with residential areas, commercial spaces, and institutional facilities.
Moving north of Metro Manila, Megaworld is shaping the future of Bulacan with Northwin Global City. This 85-hectare development is poised to become the region’s first business and lifestyle hub, featuring a themed commercial district, high-rise residences, hotels, malls, and state-of-the-art office towers.
Some miles from the metro, rises the Paragua Coastown, nestled in the idyllic beach town of San Vicente, Palawan. It promises a unique ecotourism experience as this soon-to-rise 462-hectare community prioritizes sustainable practices while offering luxurious amenities. Visitors can explore the island’s natural beauty, indulge in wellness sanctuaries, and embrace a mindful escape.
REACHING FILIPINOS EVERYWHERE IN THE COUNTRY
Beyond Luzon, Megaworld continues revolutionizing the landscape with its integrated townships, spreading its vision of vibrant communities across the Philippines.
Megaworld has established a strong presence in the Visayas. The Mactan Newtown, their first beachfront township outside Metro Manila, exemplifies the “live-work-play-learn” concept. This award-winning 30-hectare development integrates residences, offices, retail stores, a school, and a soon-to-be-built convention center, all steps away from the MactanCebu International Airport. Further south in Iloilo, the Iloilo Business Park is a testament to Megaworld’s transformative power. This 72-hectare crown jewel has become Iloilo’s most modern central business district, boasting a vibrant mix of residential spaces, office towers, world-class hotels, leisure hotspots, and two museums: the Iloilo Museum of Contemporary Art and The Brandy Museum, which sit right beside each other.
Megaworld’s vision extends beyond bustling business districts. Sta. Barbara Heights, a 173-hectare development by Megaworld’s subsidiary GERI, reimagines the idyllic lifestyle within a sprawling residential village. This integrated community features a vibrant shophouse district, mixed-use commercial buildings, and even boutique hotels conveniently located near the historic Iloilo Golf Course and International Airport.
Inspired by New York’s luxury district, The Upper East in Bacolod City promises a vibrant and wellconnected experience. This 34-hectare masterplanned community integrates upscale residences, BPO offices, a lifestyle mall, commercial spaces, and a transport hub, embodying Megaworld’s pioneering live-work-play concept.
Boracay Newcoast offers a reimagined island living experience for those seeking an island paradise. This 150-hectare integrated resort on Boracay Island’s eastern shore draws inspiration from global hotspots like Miami Beach and Santorini. Megaworld hotels, upscale condos, a planned luxury district, and a championship golf course create an oasis nestled amidst rolling hills overlooking the Sibuyan Sea.
Finally, Davao Park District marks Megaworld’s entry point in Mindanao. This budding 11-hectare township envisioned as Davao City’s next central business district will feature office towers, themed residential condominiums, a lifestyle mall, commercial areas, and even a school, all designed with Europeaninspired architecture.
CONSISTENTLY LOOKING FORWARD
Megaworld continues to push the boundaries of urban living with its exciting roster of upcoming township developments. These meticulously planned communities go beyond just providing residences; they offer a complete lifestyle experience, fostering a vibrant sense of community while promoting sustainability. One such project is the Winford Resort Estate, a three-hectare jewel set to rise beside historic Chinatown within the San Lazaro Tourism and Business Park—this integrated resort complex promises to be a visual masterpiece, channeling the grandeur of Old Manila.
Venturing south to Cavite, Megaworld unveils Sherwood Hills, a sprawling 340-hectare haven offering a complete lifestyle experience. Golfing enthusiasts will delight in the world-class Sherwood Hills Golf Club, while nature lovers can find serenity within the 41.8-hectare Prana Garden Villas. Looking ahead, Megaworld undoubtedly plans to continue crafting these innovative townships, shaping the future of Philippine landscapes where residents can live, work, play, and thrive.
Where do we go from here?
SO MANY events transpired in the two
weeks we serialized our observations and suggestions on how to deal with the country’s food staple.
The promulgation of the executive order that would bring down tariffs on rice, corn, frozen meats, and other products until 2028, or as clarified later by the NEDA, echoed days after by DA, that such reductions could be revised upwards as inflation eases.
If so, why prescribe till 2028? The signal to our farmers and livestock sector was bad.
Then there was the Reuters investigative report on how the US demonized COVID vaccines produced by China, a dastardly misinformation that caused thousands of death while Pfizer and Moderna, the US vaccines, were yet unavailable, for which our ambassador to the US of A tried to finagle from his host country (once our colonial masters who a former president of our “republic” praised for its “benevolence” in his inaugural address) by suggesting a trade-off between vaccine availability and VFA extension but was still rebuffed.
There was the June 17 attack by Chinese militia on a supply mission upon the beached MV Sierra Madre. Government clearly did not know what reaction it should make until after five days, when no less than the executive secretary pooh-poohed the attack as an “accident,” likely a “misunderstanding,” and declared that hereon we will announce the schedules of our re-supply missions to our marooned men in the decrepit navy vessel to prevent such “misunderstandings.”
This pusillanimous reaction was to be rebutted two days after by our defense secretary who declared the June 17 attack was a “deliberate, aggressive action and an illegal use of force.”
And when questioned the day after in a Senate committee hearing, he declared “it is not a misunderstanding or an accident,” and he put it “on the record…under oath.”
So which is which?
Meanwhile, our president prefers to just mouth the usual platitudes, speechifying in King’s English mixed with good Tagalog in front of his soldiers.
Which brings me to a very recent dinner of five, four of whom had served in government along with a respected journalist who refuses to retire.
After many observations on the true “state of the nation,” including a first-hand encounter with a high official who demanded “something” for doing an act which is part of his usual responsibility to the people, all of us wondered what kind of country we would be leaving to our future generations.
“Where do we go from here?” I asked, “we” referring to the Filipino people, not necessarily to myself who in senior years keeps ruing the fact that our electorate always elect the least among us to lead us, be it local or national dynasts who have consigned us to becoming a feudal state under the false patina of democracy.
One of us tried to be a bit more optimistic, as he tried to convince another to run for public office once more, and perhaps give some “sense and sanity” to a much devalued Senate.
I kept mostly quiet on the matter as I do not want our common friend to suffer through another six years of crusading for something that is impossible to achieve given our existing polity and the systems by which governance in this land is practiced.
We ended our reunion after more than three hours, happy we are still around, yet with the sinking feeling that the future would be bleak.
Nor do I think his better principles would rub off on his pork-addicted colleagues, some of whom have been convicted both by magisterial bar and the bar of public opinion. We ended our reunion after more than three hours, happy we are still around, yet with the sinking feeling that the future would be bleak.
Then again, our recently resigned education secretary and vice-president said our former president, her father, and two of her brothers would altogether run for senator in next year’s mid-terms.
My own reading of the out of the blue announcement: don’t bet on it.
It’s straight from the patriarch’s playbook -- keep everybody guessing.
The likelier scenario come October: FPRRD runs for mayor of his city once more, while one of his sons, likely Mayor Baste, will go for a senatorial post next year while Paolo guns for re-election as Davao City representative.
And Inday Sara either goes back to Davao in 2028, or if the political climate is good for her, she will go for the presidency.
FOOD security as defined by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “exists when all people, at all times, have physical, social, and economic access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food which meets their dietary needs and food preferences for an active and healthy life.”
The availability and pricing of food, the balance between supply and demand, along with the efficiency of the food distribution network are critical factors in a nation’s socio-economic and political stability.
The current dynamics and issues affecting the food ecosystem of the Philippines was the focus of discussions in last week’s forum on “Achieving Food Security: Advancing Investments for Agricultural Sustainability,” co-organized by PHINMA Corp., the Stratbase Institute and the Makati Business Club.
PHINMA Construction Materials Group executive vice president Eduardo Sahagun opened the forum by emphasizing the urgent need for food security in the Philippines amid the damaging effects of climate change, rising food demands, and logistical challenges.
He cited Agriculture Secretary Francisco Laurel Jr.’s statement that 30 percent of the country’s agricultural produce is wasted due to poor logistics, as nearly 51 million Filipinos are coping with moderate or severe food insecurity, which, according to United Nations data, is the highest in Southeast Asia. This UN report reveals the alarming statistic that nearly half of Filipinos face increasing difficulties in accessing food due to resource constraints, leading to insufficient nutrition and hunger.
Sahagun shared PHINMA’s hope for farmers and fisherfolk to be enabled with enough accessible facilities to store their products for longer periods, reducing wastage and increase their value.
Stratbase Institute president Prof. Victor
Andres “Dindo” Manhit emphasized the need to transition from a services-dependent economy to one that prioritizes agriculture, forestry, and industry.
Prof. Manhit pointed out while we have recovered from COVID-19, hunger remains a persistent issue and the big challenge is addressing poverty amidst the cost-of-living crisis and inflation, which for Filipinos is driven by the cost of food.
By investing in agricultural infrastructure, we can create a future where farmers, communities, and the whole of society will thrive
To boost the nation’s productivity and food supply, he advocated for increased investments in the manufacturing sector, particularly for the domestic market, within the agro-industrial sphere. In so doing, the domestic market will expand with more affordable goods and essential commodities such as food. It will also enhance our position within the global supply chain.
COO of Union Insulated Panel Corporation Ms. Danielle del Rosario pointed out enhancing agricultural infrastructure is pivotal for food security.
“Investments in modern irrigation systems, cold storage facilities, and cold chain logistics networks reduce post-harvest losses, increase crop yields, and ensure that fresh produce reaches markets efficiently,” she stated.
O WHY did suspended Bamban town mayor Alice Leal Guo – whose real name, according to the National Bureau of Investigation, is actually Guo Hua Ping based on fingerprint matching –think she could get away with assuming another person’s name, run for political office by claiming she’s a Filipino, and become deeply involved in illegal activities in Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators or POGOs?
The suspended mayor has been subjected to scrutiny, not only because of her alleged POGO connections, but also due to her questionable identity.
The National Bureau of Investigation strengthened this allegation, confirming last week that her fingerprints matched those of a Chinese passport holder Guo Hua Ping who entered the Philippines as a 13-year-old on Jan. 12,
2003 using a special investor resident visa. At this point, we have yet to ascertain the extent of her elaborate yet clumsy attempt at large-scale deception. That would be up to the ongoing Senate probe and by other investigative bodies.
It may be time for the government to ban POGOs altogether... and send Alice Guo and others of her ilk to their rightful place –behind bars
What is clear for now is she is certain to be stripped of her position as town mayor and serve a long jail term if convicted of qualified human trafficking and other crimes, not to mention peddling blatant and outrageous lies during the Senate inquiry. And Guo cannot expect to be deported to China once convicted by a court here, as she would first have to serve the sentence in the Philippines, as pointed out by Sen. Risa Hontiveros, head of the Senate committee that conducted the hearings on her case.
IN THE shadows of modern geopolitics, where truth is often a casualty of strategic manipulation, the battle for the West Philippine Sea stands as a testament to the pernicious power of disinformation.
As Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo took the stage at the East-West Center’s 2024 International Media Conference, his message was clear: the fight for the West Philippine Sea is not just a regional squabble but a global struggle against deceit and coercion.
Disinformation, the weapon of choice in modern warfare, is an insidious force that has reshaped conflicts around the globe.
From Russia’s meddling in the 2016 US elections to the spread of fake news during Brexit, the ability to distort facts and manufacture alternate realities has become a potent tool for malign actors.
In the West Philippine Sea, China has mastered this dark art, weaving a narrative the area is merely a chessboard for great power rivalry, thus obscuring its blatant disregard for international law.
Manalo’s speech was a clarion call, cutting through the fog of misinformation.
He reminded us the real issue is not about power plays between nations, but about a single country’s audacious defiance of the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the 2016 Arbitral Award.
This award unequivocally recognized the Philippines’ rights within its Exclusive Economic Zone, rights that China continues to trample under the guise of historical claims.
The gravity of the situation in the West Philippine Sea is underscored by the recent violent disruption by the China Coast Guard at Ayungin Shoal, a stark reminder of the aggressive tactics employed to enforce China’s unlawful claims.
But disinformation compounds these physical threats.
By flooding the information space with falsehoods, China seeks to erode international support for the Philippines and legitimize its actions.
The international community must heed Manalo’s call to action.
This approach not only stabilizes food prices but also makes nutritious food more accessible, combating hunger and malnutrition.
By preserving perishable goods at optimal temperatures, cold storage facilities ensure that food reaches tables instead of landfills, significantly reducing waste.
However, the Philippines lags significantly behind global standards in per capita cold storage capacity, with only 0.04 cubic meters per person compared to the global average of 0.15 cubic meters.
The Department of Agriculture is keenly aware of these challenges.
Undersecretary Asis Perez highlighted the need for a robust logistics system, modernized farming practices, and enhanced post-harvest infrastructure.
By developing efficient logistics systems,
Since the PNP Criminal Investigation and Detection Group and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission have already filed a nonbailable case of qualified human trafficking against the suspended mayor over her alleged ties with Zun Yuan Technology Inc.–an illegal POGO in Bamban town–she may have to spend several decades in prison.
What is alarming is how Guo has been able to foist herself as a naturalborn Filipino and even hold public office while she was in fact presiding over patently illegal operations in POGOs, including online scams, prostitution, kidnapping and torture. Authorities will also have to determine whether this is an isolated case, or a common occurrence in other areas where POGOs have been established. These POGOs were allowed to operate because they were supposed to provide employment to Filipinos, pay the correct taxes to the Philippine government, and contribute to our economic growth.
But as it turns out, many of the POGOs are nothing more than criminal enterprises hiding behind a veneer of legality.
It may be time for the government to ban POGOs altogether, as suggested by some lawmakers and right-thinking citizens, and send Guo and others of her ilk to their rightful place – behind bars.
How disinformation threatens peace in the South China Sea
The Philippines’ steadfast commitment to a rules-based international order, as championed by President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., is a beacon of hope.
Upholding UNCLOS is not just about the Philippines; it’s about preserving the integrity of international maritime law and ensuring that no single nation can unilaterally rewrite the rules.
Manalo’s emphasis on genuine journalism is paramount. In an age where AI-generated content can blur the lines between fact and fiction, the role of the press in disseminating verified information is more critical than ever.
The path forward requires unwavering support for the rule of law, robust international cooperation to counter disinformation, and a renewed commitment to peaceful diplomacy
The Philippines’ partnership with media organizations to expose the reality in the West Philippine Sea is a model for how governments and the press can collaborate to counter disinformation.
Moreover, the international community must take stronger stances against China’s misdeeds.
The world has witnessed China’s strategic use of disinformation not only in the South China Sea but also in its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and its narrative on human rights abuses in Xinjiang. These actions, driven by a desire to con-
the country can significantly reduce postharvest losses and improve food distribution networks. Adopting modern agricultural technologies is another critical aspect of this transformation. As Makati Business Club Executive Director Roberto Batungbacal pointed out, agritech solutions are gaining traction among startups and major tech companies. Identifying and implementing technologies that are tailored to the Philippines’ unique agricultural landscape is essential for success.
Engr. Arnel V. De Mesa, Assistant Secretary for Special Concerns at the Department of Agriculture, emphasized the importance of sustainable practices such as alternate wetting and drying technology to reduce
trol the global narrative, threaten the very fabric of international diplomacy and the rule of law.
Diplomacy and peace must be the guiding principles in addressing these challenges.
The Philippines’ initiative to engage with allies such as the United States in countering misinformation sets a precedent.
The proposed Memorandum of Cooperation on Countering Foreign Information Manipulation is a step towards a united front against the disinformation menace.
Looking globally, we can draw lessons from countries like Estonia, which has successfully countered Russian disinformation through public education and robust cyber defenses.
Similarly, Taiwan’s proactive measures to combat Chinese disinformation campaigns offer a roadmap for other nations facing similar threats.
The Philippines can adopt and adapt these strategies, emphasizing public awareness and digital literacy to build resilience against disinformation.
China’s actions in the West Philippine Sea are not just a regional issue but a global challenge that tests our collective commitment to truth and justice.
As Manalo poignantly highlighted, the international community must reject the reductionist view that frames this conflict as mere power rivalry. Instead, we must see it for what it is: a blatant violation of international law and an affront to the principles of sovereignty and self-determination.
The path forward requires unwavering support for the rule of law, robust international cooperation to counter disinformation, and a renewed commitment to peaceful diplomacy.
In this struggle, truth must be our shield, and unity our strength.
The world is watching, and history will judge us by how we respond to this pivotal moment. Let us rise to the challenge, championing peace, justice, and the enduring power of truth.
greenhouse gases. Additionally, he advocated for the adoption of solar technology in agriculture, which offers an inexpensive and reliable energy solution.
Achieving food security in the Philippines is challenging yet full of opportunities. Investing in cold storage infrastructure is crucial for reducing waste, stabilizing food prices, and ensuring access to nutritious food for all Filipinos. This effort demands collaboration from the government, private sector, and community stakeholders. Agriculture is central to our nation’s progress. By investing in agricultural infrastructure, we can create a future where farmers, communities, and the whole of society will thrive.

THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) reported over the weekend new signs of restiveness both of Kanlaon and Taal volcanoes. In a 24-hours observation of active volcanoes bulletin released by NDRRMC on Sunday, PHIVOLCS said Kanlaon in Negros Island exhibited 14 volcanic earthquakes on Saturday. Kanlaon was still emitting an average of 5,397 tons/day of SO2 from the
The senator noted that the projected Bulacan ecozone would be a perfect venue for an efficient and sustainable integrated airport network.
“We owe it to our people to give them a better airport. It has been
long in coming,” Poe said.
Central to the establishment of the Bulacan EcoZone, Poe said, is the building of a “quintessential airport that the country badly needs.”
To be known as the Bulacan International Airport, the facility would be built in Bulacan, Bulacan, with start of operations expected in 2027.
The proposed law creates the Bulacan Special Economic Zone and Freeport Authority (BEZA) which will manage the ecozone.
In consultation with the National Economic and Development Authority, the BEZA will establish the general framework for land use, planning and development for the
area covered by ecozone.
It will be organized within 180 days upon the effectivity of the law.
Under the law, the BEZA will have an authorized capital stock of P2 billion, the majority shares of which shall be subscribed and paid for by the national and the local governments.
As Senate finance committee chairperson, Poe pointed out that the chamber will exercise its functions to see to it that government funds for the Bulacan EcoZone will be spent judiciously.
She said the government should be ready to pitch in as a partner by developing the ecozone.
SENATOR Cynthia Villar has highlighted the importance of innovative approaches and collaborative efforts to safeguard the country’s protected areas and enhance the well-being of the communities.

THE Department of Health (DOH) and some anti-smoking and anti-vaping groups have wrapped up the “No Smoking” month in June with a call on the public to ensure a smoke-free Philippines.
In a statement released on Sunday, the DOH reminded the people that “sa bisyo, walang panalo” (in vice, there are no winners).
The agency enjoined the public to “love yourself and care for others by not smoking or vaping.”
The Philippine Legislators’ Committee on Population and Development (PLCPD), along with the Social Watch Philippines (SWP),and the Philippine Smoke-Free Movement (PSFM) ,recently launched last month a campaign highlighting the harmful effects of smoking and vaping, especially among the youth.
“Let every month be a no-smoking month so that we can build an environment free from tobacco,” said PLCPD deputy executive director Au Quilala.
She batted for continuous local government support for early prevention activities to protect the children from the harmful effects of smoking. PSFM national coordinator Riza Duro underscored the urgency of the issue by citing the first “vape-related death” in the country.
She emphasized the need for strict regulations on the sale and marketing of vapes to prevent the youth from getting hooked.
The campaign was backed by Presidential Proclamation No. 183, declaring June as “National No-Smoking Month.” Advocacy group Parents Against Vape (PAV) stressed that vaping is not a legitimate cessation tool against cigarettes, contrary to industry claims. They argued that vaping merely shifts users from one deadly habit to another.
The 2019 Global Youth Tobacco Survey revealed that one in seven Filipino youths aged 13 to 15 use vapes. The PAV believes this number could be higher today, given the rapid spread of vape shops across the country.

TWO Supreme Court magistrates have hailed this year’s law graduates “who faced many obstacles, including the COVID-19 pandemic,” in obtaining their four-year law degree.
In his speech, Associate Justice Samuel Gaerlan paid tribute to the law graduates of the Isabela State University (SLU) College of Law.
DENR–Biodiversity Management Bureau (BMB).
The event held in Quezon City had for its theme “Building Resilience of People and Ecosystems Through Innovations and Enhanced Collaboration in Protected Area Management.”
Villar noted that prior to the enactment of the National Integrated Protected Areas System Act of 1992 or the NIPAS Act, the government had declared multiple national parks whose protections were basically just on paper. Thirteen ecologically important areas were established through individual legislations, while the rest continued to be managed as initial components of the system.
“You made a choice to begin something big when no one else would dare to; you entered law school at a time when everything was put to a halt because of COVID-19,” Gaerlan said.
“Through the years, the establishment of protected areas by legislative action under the NIPAS Act of 1992 became few ... due to exploitation and other profound impact of human activities and on all components of the natural environment,” Villar said.
CASH INCENTIVES. This year’s graduates of Grade 6 and Grade 12 in Navotas City received their cash incentives of P500 and P1,000, respectively, from the city government. Members of the Navotas Polytechnic College graduating classes will also receive their P1,500cash incentives after their commencement exercise. Andrew Rabulan
“You pushed yourselves out of your comfort zones, explored uncharted territories, navigated the unknown, and embraced the uncertainty. You pursued, persevered, powered through, and delivered,” he added.
“For that, I admire your courage, applaud your tenacity, as well as commend your passion and determination,” Gaerlan said.
Associate Justice Antonio Kho Jr., in his speech before the law graduates of the Arellano University School of Law at the Fiesta Pavilion of the Manila Hotel, also lauded the perseverance of the law graduates who started their studies during the pandemic.
“Your first classes were done online, and you have had to be creative in learning in a new medium. Because of that, you are already battledtested and have become fighters. You have fought, you have struggled, you have fallen, you have risen and you have triumphed. That is inspiring,” Kho said.
“For today, you are all victors. You are the chiefs of your own destiny. And by your grit, your courage, and sheer determination, you have willed your narrative into this final epic conclusion,” he stressed.

14,000 families in Negros Oriental to get assistance following eruption
By Caloy Lozada and Rex Espiritu
ABOUT 14,000 families in Canlaon City, Negros Oriental will receive financial support from the government beginning July 1, following eruption of Mount Kanlaon, Mayor Jose Chubasco Cardenas announced. This comes as the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) and the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) report a surge in volcanic activity in Mt. Kanlaon and Taal.
Cardenas said the assistance ranges from P3,000 to P10,000 per family through the Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situations (AICS) program of the national government. A quarter of the expected beneficiaries are persons with disabilities (PWDs) and senior citizens. The mayor thanked President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. for the swift response and the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), which has already distributed essential relief packs to affected
families. Cardenas stated it is their priority to ensure that every family gets help to recover from the incident. In addition to AICS, programs like the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD), Abot Kamay ang Pagtulong (AKAP), and Presidential Assistance for Farmers, Fishermen, and their Families (PAFFF) are also mobilizing resources to support the community.
President Marcos visited Negros Oriental on June 27, 2024, to allocate P50 million to aid farmers and fishermen in their recovery efforts. The local government unit (LGU) is currently validating 5,000 vegetable farmers and 3,236 rice farmers to ensure they receive the necessary support. As relief efforts continue, PHIVOLCS and NDRRMC reported significant volcanic activity. Over the weekend, Kanlaon experienced 14 volcanic earthquakes,
MOST Filipinos continue to hold positive sentiment about the country, but optimism fell to its lowest level in the second quarter of 2024 since tracking began in early 2022, according to an independent survey by PUBLiCUS Asia Inc.
The PAHAYAG 2024 secondquarter nationwide survey, conducted on June 15 to 19, 2024, found that 54 percent of the 1,507 respondents have positive sentiment about the country.
This is down from 55 percent in the first quarter and 67 percent a year ago.
“Overall, positive sentiments about the country are at their lowest since tracking began, with positives still higher than
negatives but nearly equal, indicating polarization,” PUBLiCUS Asia says.
It says the decline was driven by the National Capital Region and North and Central Luzon, those aged 40 to 49, low-income households, non-Catholics, government workers and vocational graduates.
Despite the decline, the survey found that a majority of Filipinos report feeling “somewhat happy.”
About 40 percent feel they are close to their best possible life, while 20
percent believe they are already there.
“Basic physiological needs and safety/security are the primary personal goals for happiness,” the PAHAYAG report says.
Positive views on the country’s state and direction remain low, with increasing indecision. The number of respondents who believe the current state of the country is strong fell to 38 percent in the second quarter from 39 percent in the first quarter and 51 percent a year ago.

IN the male-dominated corporate world, having a woman sit in the driver’s seat of big-ticket companies often raises a lot of critical brows.
Veteran banker Lynette Ortiz recalled her experience working in the cutthroat and maledominated New York banking industry, but she had to show them how hard women had to work to get to the same position as men.
“There were instances when colleagues had doubts on my value and contribution to the company, because I was a woman—even to the point where I was asked to serve men coffee or leave a meeting. As a woman, I had to do work doubly hard to prove my seat at the table,” she said.
To combat the negative stereotypes women face, she said that it was imperative that women come to meetings fully prepared, Ortiz wrote in her memoir.
Somehow, her past struggles are now just part of her memories.
She was roundly welcomed when President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. appointed her on May 24, 2023 as the 11th president and chief executive of the state-run Land Bank of the Philippines, replacing Cecilia Cayosa Borromeo who held the post for four years. Before moving to LandBank, Ortiz was the first Filipino CEO of the Standard Chartered Bank of the Philippines. Prior to that, she served various banks, both offshore and domestic, as senior officer in risk management, treasury, corporate finance and capital markets.
She also sits as first vice president of the Bankers Association of the Philippines, apart from being a member of the group’s executive committee.
Under her stewardship, LandBank shifted to high gear with digitalization drive to boost its financing services.
“I recognize the highly-important role of LANDBANK in nation-building, and I am keen

to contribute and infuse ideas and innovations that will further fortify the Bank in fulfilling its social mandate. I hope to bring in a fresh perspective drawn from my experience working in global organizations,” Ortiz said.
She pledged to sustain and improve the bank’s support services to agriculture and other vital industries, as well as expand financial inclusion and deliver assistance to marginalized and vulnerable sectors.
According to her, LandBank has evolved over the past 60 years into the biggest development and financial institution in the country.
“We will continue to expand our services through more branches and automatic teller machines,” Ortiz in her 60th anniversary message.
Ortiz took her MBA in Finance and Investments at the City University of New York, Baruch after graduating cum laude in Business Administration from the University of the Philippines.
“If you want to do anything in the world, personally or professionally, create a vision so others can join in and become part of it. Thinking strategically and being purposeful, even early on in your career, are key,” she wrote in an article titled “How I Got Where I Am.”
“I initially focused on analytical work and risk management. I involved myself in industry work through the Bankers Association of the Philippines, and also worked closely with regulators. Over time, I found myself enjoying client interactions and built a network of relationships,” she said.
“In my career, I’ve learned about new industries, the unique characteristics of clients, and worked on how the Bank can partner to deliver solutions. There’s always something new and exciting to learn, which is why I’m still here in banking after 30 years,” said Ortiz.

THE Philippines moved closer to exiting the Financial Action Task Force (FATF) gray list after making progress on its action plan to combat money laundering and terrorist financing. The FATF said in a statement on June 28, 2024 that the Philippines made significant progress in enhancing its anti-money laundering and counter-terrorism financing (AML/ CTF) regime.
“Since June 2021, when the Philippines made a high-level political commitment to work with the FATF and APG to strengthen the effectiveness of its AML/CFT regime, the Philippines has taken significant steps towards improving its AML/CFT regime,” it said. The FATF also highlighted the increased efforts of the country in ML investigation and prosecution. “Demonstrating an increase in ML investigations and prosecutions in line with risk; enforcement of beneficial ownership transparency obligations and law enforcement access to those beneficial ownership data records; and that risk-based supervision of DNFBPs is occurring,” it said. PH market seen moving sideways this week ahead of inflation report
THE Philippine stock market is expected to return to its sideways movement this week after last week’s bargain-hunting as investors await the release of June inflation data.
Rizal Commercial Banking Corp. chief economist Michael Ricafort said local economic data, particularly the June inflation which is slated for release on July 5 would be the main concern this week.
The Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) earlier said inflation rate in June 2024 likely settled within a range of 3.4 percent to 4.2 percent following May’s 3.9 percent.
Investors will also await US employment data which are scheduled for release on July 5.
Other positive factors that could sustain the upward momentum in the local stock market are the record high US stocks, stabilizing peso against the dollar and the recent move of the BSP to maintain interest rates.
The Philippine Stock Exchange index (PSEi) is expected to stay above the 6,400 level this week and re-test the 6,500 level.
The PSEi jumped 253 points, or 4.12 percent last week to close at 6,411 amid bargain-hunting and window-dressing activities.
Average turnover reached P5.27 billion, higher by 9.43 percent weekon-week, while net foreign buying averaged P2 million.

CENTURY Properties Group Inc. (CPG) said over the weekend it plans to launch 35 new housing projects over the next five years that could potentially generate P110 billion in revenues.
CPG, through its affordable housing unit PHirst Park Homes Inc. (PPHI), said these new projects would deliver 50,000 units, with selling prices ranging from P850,000 to P8 million per unit.
The projects will be a combination of horizontal developments and master-planned township projects, it said.
PPHI president Ricky Celis said during CPG’s annual stockholders meeting the group would also venture into new product types and concepts to address demand for affordable housing units.
HARD Discount Philippines Inc., (HDPI) the owner and operator of DALI Everyday Grocery, continues to face financial challenges after three years of operations in the Philippines.
The company booked P1.88-billion net loss in 2023, marking a 110-percent increase from P894.68 million in 2022, based on the latest financial report it filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC).
Revenues surged 125 percent to P22.31 billion from P9.19 billion the previous year.
HDPI, however, reassured stakeholders that its parent company remains committed to providing necessary financial support to ensure business continuity and meet obligations as they arise.
HDPI anticipates improving profit margins over the next five years through enhanced cost-efficiency measures and increased equity.
It said DALI Everyday Grocery remains focused on expanding its store network to 950 locations by the end of 2024 despite these challenges, following its initial store opening in February 2020 in Santa Rosa, Laguna. DEG, the investment arm of German state-owned development bank KfW, committed to investing $8.4 million in DALI stores in the Philippines.
The Asian Development Bank signed an equity investment of $15 million in DALI Hard Discount in May 2023 to expand its network of retail stores and distribution centers and cold chain infrastructure in the Philippines.

The group’s planned developments will be located in more growth areas
in Luzon, the Visayas and Mindanao.
“The next five years will be exciting for CPG as we aim to enter new and sustained levels of revenues,” Celis said.
PHirst will launch five projects this year offering 8,000 units worth P18 billion in fresh inventory. Three of these projects are located in Calabarzon and the two will be in Central Luzon.
CPG, in partnership with Japan’s Mitsubishi Corp., ventured into firsthome residential market in 2017.
CPG fully acquired PHirst in November 2023 after Mitsubishi decided to exit the business to focus in other
market opportunities in the country and the Asian region. It said that while it remains bullish on the affordable market, it is “recalibrating its strategy for the residential condominium business” and would be prudent in launching high-rise developments.
“To mitigate the risk associated with long duration projects, we will remain good stewards and managers for all our stakeholders and investors as we take a positive view on the proven robust and resilient mark need for our first home housing projects,” CPG president Marco Antonio said.
Antonio said the company would also continue to develop Azure North, its township development in Pampanga. It will launch six midrise towers with sales value of P16.2 billion this year. The first tower will offer 374 units with potential sales of P2.8 billion.
GLOBE Telecom Inc. said over the weekend it is on track to achieving positive cash flow by 2025, as it continues to optimize spending in line with its strategic capital expenditure reduction.
The telecom arm of the Ayala Group also committed to meeting key financial metrics and maintain robust performance across its operational fronts.
Globe expects a low to mid-singledigit revenue growth this year from a
record level in 2023, buoyed by the expected sustained demand for datarelated services.
Globe targets earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) margin of 50 percent and anticipates its cash capital expenditure (capex) to be around $1 billion, or 23 percent lower than last year’s investment.

BOUTIQUE property developer Arthaland Corp. said it is close to acquiring two new big parcels of land that could provide future source of revenues for the company. Arthaland said during the company’s annual stockholders meeting on Friday it is the process of buying two multi-hectare properties which it plans to develop over a 10- to 15-year period.
The first property is a 3.6-hectare land in one of the most prime central business districts in Metro Manila and the second is a five-hectare property in a prime city center in southern Philippines.
“Apart from these multi-hectare properties, we are also in discussions for the acquisition of properties for single and dual-tower projects in Metro Manila,” Arthaland said.
Arthaland recently entered the broader mid-market segment of the residential sector to cater to more customers.
“By doing so, we will have wider sources of demand. In turn, this will result in a more diversified portfolio of projects that will provide better returns on a risk-adjusted basis,” Arthlaland said.

THE Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) proposed an interim price cap of P19 per kilowatthour (kWh) for the reserve market, subject to consultations and additional data from power generators.
During the initial commercial operation of the reserve market, the Department of Energy (DOE) temporarily implemented a price cap of P32,000 per megawatt-hour (MWh), which is equivalent to P32 per kWh, and a price floor of P0 per MWh. The ERC, however, rejected the DOE’s proposed P32,000 per MWh cap, deeming it excessive.
The ERC said it aims to “set a reasonable offer ceiling that will limit excessive pricing in the market and prevent windfall profits for ancillary
service (AS) providers, with the end view of protecting consumer interest.”
The ERC drafted a resolution on “Setting an Interim Offer Price Cap as Mitigating Measure for the Trading of Reserves in the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM).” Simulations conducted on the proposed P19,000 per MWh cap showed that it would result in an annual net revenue requirement (ANRR) greater than the computed annual market revenue.
“This is enough to compensate AS
providers for all reserve types, which already considers the recovery of the ANRR of peaking generators as well as its short-run marginal cost [SRMC] of operating on an hourly basis, permitting cost recouperation and effective resource allocation over both long-term and short-term market participation. Thus, the recommended proposed level of offer price cap for the reserve market is P19,000 per MWh,” the ERC said.
The ERC said the price cap for the reserve market could be further refined with more data from generation companies covering longer periods. This would allow the commission to integrate more data into its methodology and arrive at a more feasible offer cap value.
“The interim offer price cap shall be reviewed and recomputed one year
after its implementation, contingent on the collection of sufficient data from the annual submissions of generation companies,” the ERC said.
“Upon collection of sufficient data from generation companies, a technology-specific offer price cap may be computed by the Commission subject to public consultations and comments from stakeholders,” the regulator said.
The ERC said the move is part of its mandate to protect consumer welfare while ensuring that investments in the WESM and the reserve market are not discouraged.
The reserve market, now integrated into the WESM, aims to optimize energy and reserve procurement. This integration is expected to promote competition and affordability while ensuring grid security and reliability.

AGRICULTURE Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. views technology as the key to revitalizing Philippine agriculture as he underscored the urgency of modernization to address the aging farmer population and unlock the sector’s full potential.
Agriculture employs a significant portion of the workforce, but contributes less than 10 percent to the gross domestic product. This, coupled with the average farmer’s age exceeding 55, strengthens the call for a paradigm shift.
“The big challenge we face is making farming profitable. The solution lies in embracing technology-based farming methods,” Tiu Laurel said in a recent forum with business owners.
He cited successful local examples where advancements like water management systems and irrigation techniques drastically reduced resource use and boosted productivity.
Inspired by South Korea’s extensive use of greenhouses, the DA aims to scale up this technology in the Philippines.
Tiu Laurel stressed the importance of supportive policies, drawing insights from Vietnam’s successful model that includes subsidies and crop insurance.
A crucial aspect of the plan involves a shift in agricultural education. The focus will move from traditional methods to comprehensive training in modern techniques, empowering landowners and tenants for success.
Tiu Laurel also underscored the significance of robust crop insurance coverage to mitigate risks for farmers, thereby fostering confidence in adopting new technologies and sustainable practices.
He also called for increased access to government-backed loans facilitated by the Agricultural Credit Policy Council (ACPC), which disbursed only P100 million out of its P600-million available funds.
THE Asian Development Bank (ADB) signed an agreement with the Ayala Group’s ACEN Renewable Energy Solutions (ACEN RES) to power its headquarters in Mandaluyong City with 100-percent renewable energy. ACEN said in a statement that under the agreement, its retail electricity arm would power ADB’s facilities with renewable energy from its portfolio of renewable energy sources such as solar and wind.
The move aligns with the development bank’s push to promote sustainability and environmental responsibility.
“We at ACEN are excited to expand our collaboration with the Asian Development Bank. ADB has been instrumental in driving the growth of our renewable energy portfolio in the Philippines and around the region through sustainable financing,” said ACEN president and chief executive Eric Francia.
ADB vice-president for administration and corporate management Bruce Gosper said that as Asia and the Pacific’s climate bank, the ADB is committed to lowering its carbon footprint.
“This includes sourcing electricity from renewable energy sources such as solar and wind,” Gosper said.
ADB director-general for corporate services Lakshmi Menon said that despite the size of the bank’s headquarters, it managed to consume less energy than other buildings with the same size and occupancy levels.
“As part of our sustainability efforts, we have continued to source electricity from renewable sources since 2014. We’ve also done what we can to consume less in areas of water and paper while producing less waste,” said Menon.
ACEN RES awarded the development bank its ‘Powered by Renewable Energy’ seal to recognize ADB’s commitment to renewable energy. The badge is typically given to ACEN RES customers who choose a 100-percent renewable energy supply. Alena Mae S. Flores

MAJOR real estate investment
trust (REITs) companies, once primarily focused on office spaces, are now pivoting towards acquiring shopping malls and other retail assets.
The strategic shift comes at a time when the office market is showing signs of softness, prompting REIT firms to diversify their portfolios and capitalize on the resilient nature of retail properties.
It also marks a natural progression for property REITs, as malls continue to draw more traffic and
retail sales rebound after the severe impact of the pandemic.
Prior to the pandemic, malls were flourishing as Filipinos enjoyed spending time in shopping malls not only for shopping but also for dining and recreation.
Market dynamics
The introduction of REITs to the Philippine market in 2009 marked a significant milestone, offering investors a structured approach to participate in income-generating real estate properties.
As the office market showed resilience during the pandemic, REIT firms like AREIT Inc., RL Commercial REIT Inc. (RCR), MREIT Inc. and Fil REIT Corp. initially opted to focus building its portfolio around office buildings catering to business process outsourcing firms.
Recent market dynamics, including a softened demand for office spaces amid changing work patterns and economic uncertainties,
have prompted REITs to explore alternative avenues for sustainable growth.
Appeal of retail
As the other segments of the property sector emerges from the pandemic, retail assets rose as a beacon of stability and resilience in the real estate sector.
Shopping malls and retail centers, anchored by established tenants and supported by long-term lease agreements, offer consistent rental income streams.
In a country where consumer spending continues to rise, driven by a young and growing population with increasing disposable incomes, analysts said retail properties present an attractive opportunity for REITs seeking stable cash flows amid economic fluctuations.
“Having more retail assets in their portfolio will make the REITs more attractive as rental income will become more stable,” said COL Financial research head April Lee Tan.
ROBINSONS Bacolod, the city’s well-loved landmark and the first full-service shopping mall to open in Bacolod, is embarking on an exciting redevelopment journey after 27 years. This much-loved destination is set to undergo a spectacular transformation, promising an elevated shopping and leisure experience to reignite the spark for its loyal patrons over the years, as well as to attract a new generation of mallgoers.
While this exciting redevelopment is underway, Robinsons Bacolod will remain operational, ensuring that patrons can continue to enjoy their favorite shops, restaurants and services. Since opening in 1997, Robinsons
Bacolod, affectionately known as “Rob Bacolod,” has become an integral part of the city’s heritage and tradition.
Nestled along Lacson Street, the city’s main artery, the mall has always been a hub of activity, catering to the needs of homeowners, students from nearby schools, and barkadas of all ages seeking fun, food, entertainment, and more. Apart from hosting well-planned engaging events and activities, it has also been home to several local entrepreneurs whose businesses continue to thrive as venue host for the very popular MassKarra festival.
The mall’s highly anticipated trans-
China Bank Capital Corp. managing head Juan Paolo Colet also pointed out that retail assets have been outperforming the office properties in the past few quarters.
“REITs that combine the two [office and retail] would create a more resilient real estate portfolio with better dividend prospects,” he said.
“REITs have to boost dividend yields to attract investors given the bonds and preferred shares are offering higher rates,” he said.
Strategic diversification
The move towards acquiring retail assets is not merely a reaction to market conditions but a strategic shift to diversify and strengthen REIT portfolios.
MREIT reported plans to start acquiring retail assets from its parent firm Megaworld Corp. starting this year. The move is part of the company’s strategy to achieve its target 1 million square meters of gross leasable space by 2030.
Robinsons Land Corp., a leading shopping mall developer, is also injecting 11 malls and two office towers in its REIT unit worth P33.9 billion.
Once completed, the transaction will make RCR the largest mall REIT in the country.
AREIT, one of the most diversified REIT firms in the country, is also in the process of acquiring several malls, including Glorietta 1 and 2 in Ayala Center, Makati and MarQuee mall in Angeles City, Pampanga from its parent firm Ayala Land Inc. Looking ahead
As Philippine REITs continue to diversify into other segments of the property industry, they are poised to redefine urban development and investment dynamics in the country. By strategically balancing resilience with growth opportunities, REIT firms are poised to continue enhancing shareholder value and offer investment opportunities to the public.

Russian import Marina Tushova was warmly welcomed by team owners Mandy and Milka Romero who are both convinced her Filipino-like fighting spirit is beneficial not only for the team but also for the sport which is enjoying tremendous popularity these days.
“We hope to bring more excitement to the fans that’s why we took her and the four other local players,” said Mandy Romero, who is slowly but surely transforming the Solar Spikers into one championship squad.
Apart from the four newcomers – Ayumi Furukawa, Iris Tolenada, Julia Ipac and Maria Shola Alvarez – the Romero sisters are also excited about the inaugural 2024 PVL Draft set on July 8 as they owned the No. 2 pick.
The two lovely sisters politely declined to reveal their prospect but coach Roger Gorayeb said he’s not only looking for another outside hitter but one who can easily adapt to his system and style.
“Whoever coach Roger and team will pick, we are certain she must be good,” said Milka Romero, oldest daughter of Rep. Mikee Romero (1Pacman) who once served as the godfather of PH amateur basketball.

HERE are three main things viewers should look forward to in Zig Dulay ’s Widows’ War , headlined by Carla Abellana and Bea Alonzo
At the recent press conference for the series, which premieres tonight on GMA, Carla listed three compelling elements of the small screen project that viewers can eagerly anticipate.
“First, the spectacular visuals from our director; second, the story’s unpredictability—just because she’s the lead doesn’t mean she’s the one who kills or becomes the victim, so you have to pay attention to the quiet characters on the side; and third, the brilliant performance of Bea Alonzo,” the actress told the press.
Meanwhile, Bea shared her excitement about joining the show, mentioning that it was her first time working with almost all members of the cast. Despite this, their teamwork has been smooth, making the journey of creating the project rewarding right from the start.
“I feel very fortunate to be part of this project, especially after seeing the teaser for it. It’s my first time seeing it,” she began.
“When you’re working on a project, you never really know what the outcome will be. It’s like solving a puzzle, and the way it has come together is really beautiful. It makes me very proud,” Bea continued.
Bea takes on the role of Samantha/Sam while Carla plays Georgina/George. Their lives will turn upside down when they get involved with the wealthy Palacios clan.
Based on the original concept of RJ Nuevas and Ken De Leon, “Widows’ War” revolves around Sam and George, former best friends who will go head-to-head to find out who between them is the real sinner or saint.
Sam and George blame each other for an unfortunate event their families experience and everything that follows. Soon, they cross paths again while mourning their husbands. Their sanity and reputation are put at risk when they become suspects in the sudden deaths of Paco and Basil.
As the two widows try to clean their own names, Sam and George uncover a web of lies and deceit. Will they choose to bring each other down or will they become allies to solve the murder mystery?
“I believe in this material. I believe in imparting to the audience that it’s not just a murder mystery; it also provides lessons such as valuing friendships, family, and truth,” series director Zig Dulay shared.
The cast of Widows’ War includes Tonton Gutierrez, Jeric Gonzales, Juancho Triviño, Jackie Lou Blanco, Lito Pimentel, Timmy Cruz, Rita Daniela, Royce Cabrera, Lovely Rivero, James Graham, Charlie Flemming, Matthew Uy, and Jean Garcia. Joining them are Benjamin Alves and Rafael Rosell in special roles.
Widows’ War premieres tonight on GMA Prime. It airs weeknights at 8:50 and has a delayed telecast on GTV at 10:50 p.m.

TURKEY has always been a magnet for tourists from all over the world, as proven by the 1.5 million visitors it averages every month. Not only is it filled with cultural treasures, but it is also unique because it is the only country in the world that belongs to two continents – Asia and Europe.
The last time I visited Turkey, I did not have the chance to enjoy what Istanbul has to offer because our tour group preferred to go straight to Ephesus, primarily to visit the house of our Blessed Mother, see what’s left of the Temple of Artemis, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World, and be awed by the famous Library of Celsus. Then we proceeded to Cappadocia and were fascinated by the wide expanse of beautiful rock formations with bizarre rock pillars known as “fairy chimneys,” as we flew over it in a hot air balloon.
This time, traveling with family and friends, I made sure I’d spend time in Istanbul and marvel at what the historic city offers.
First on the itinerary was the famous Hagia Sophia Grand Mosque, with its four towering minarets adding a dose of prestige to the view. Built during the Eastern Roman Empire, it has been transformed many times –first, it was an Orthodox church, then it became a Catholic church, after which it was an Eastern Orthodox church, then a mosque, then a museum, and, four years ago, it was converted back into a mosque. Although the murals and the ceiling of the interiors are peeling and need to be restored, they still evoke the

features. The thousands of blue tiles in its interior give the mosque its name. Also known as the Sultan Ahmet Mosque, it was completed just before the untimely death of the then-27-year-old Sultan. What makes this structure awe-inspiring are its elegant ascending domes and the slender, soaring minarets.
We also had the opportunity to dine at Istanbul’s world-famous restaurant, Nusr-et Steakhouse, owned by Turkish butcher and chef Nusret Gökçe, who became famous for his technique of using salt in preparing and seasoning meat. Because of this, he is popularly known as “Salt Bae,” and his luxury steakhouse can now be found in Beverly Hills, Las Vegas, Dallas, Miami, New York, London, Doha, Dubai, and Abu Dhabi. The restaurant’s interiors remind me of those catacombs from biblical times, and the steaks are to die for.

Genders are like the Twin Towers. There used to be two of them, but now it’s a really sensitive subject.
On our way to this fine dining restaurant, we passed by another imposing edifice, the Nuruosmaniye Mosque, an 18th-century Ottoman baroque structure, which I found captivating because of its unique blend of classical design and contemporary Western architecture. This made me wonder why Istanbul has so many mosques. Our tour guide told me that the city used to be the capital of the Byzantine Empire, a seat of Christianity, and had many churches. However, when the Ottoman Empire conquered it, the Turks converted the churches into mosques and built more of their own.
We had the chance to pass by the very famous Grand Bazaar which has more than 4000 shops that sell anything and everything. Good thing it

Nature-based Travel and Sustainability
There is a global boom in interest in tree planting and sustainable travel, with the Philippines among the top 10 countries showing interest, reflecting a desire to give back as part of their travel experiences.
AI Enhancing Travel. Travelers are increasingly turning to AI to plan their trips and receive assistance while on the go. AI-related searches in travel are at near all-time highs globally, including in the Philippines. The shift toward more diverse tourism in the Philippines is likely fueled by factors such as rising costs, a post-pandemic desire for authentic connection, and a growing awareness of sustainability. It will be fascinating to see how these trends evolve, but it’s great to see Filipinos exploring new ways of traveling.
was closed because of a holiday, otherwise, I would have spent the whole day there and would have missed out on seeing more of the city. I also enjoyed spending time on Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), which has been limited to pedestrian traffic and a railway tram. Hundreds of tourists walk up and down this street, which is lined on both sides with all kinds of shops selling food, souvenirs, apparel, and more. This street, in the new section of Istanbul, is Ground Zero for tourists. I came across the Church of St. Mary Draperis, a peaceful oasis right in the middle of the very busy Independence Avenue, allowing me to pay homage to our Blessed Mother. Further along, I found a nice seat at a sidewalk café and spent the afternoon leisurely enjoying Turkish tea paired with a slice of tiramisu. Another city attraction that has gained worldwide attention is the Basilica Cistern, or the Subterranean Cistern, the largest of the hundreds of cisterns found under Istanbul. Today, it is kept with little water for visitors’ easy access, and the play of colorful lights makes it visually appealing. Among the many movies that have featured this particular tourist attraction are two James Bond films (From Russia With Love and Skyfall) and Inferno, the latest of the Dan Brown trilogy. Turkey is indeed a land of stunning beauty, vibrant culture, and rich history. I’m looking forward to visiting it again because, aside from its glorious and resplendent past, where else can you claim to be both in Asia and in Europe at the same time?
