PH protests China’s illegal actions in WPS

THE Philippines filed a diplomatic protest over a brutal incident in Ayungin Shoal between Filipino troops and China Coast Guard (CCG) and maritime militia personnel on June 17, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo said Wednesday.

Manalo said the note verbale has already been sent to the Chinese Embassy in Manila.

He likewise confirmed that he has already spoken with Chinese Ambassador Huang Xilian regarding the deliberate ramming that cause one Filipino soldier to lose his thumb, but declined to provide details of the conversation.

"We are committed to peace and stability and we will do whatever we can to promote that without sacrificing our sovereign rights,” he said.

“We have the sign of the law on our side, that is why I am optimistic,” Manalo added.

Manalo said the Philippines has remained consistent in its maritime claims in the South China Sea.

Duterte trio’s Senate run gets mixed reviews

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos has approved the flagship P16.1-billion digital infrastructure project that aims to complete the national fiber backbone and enhance internet connectivity down to the grassroots. In a press briefing, Department of Information and Communications Technology Secretary Ivan Uy said the initiative is the largest of its kind in the country,

The government previously launched the first phase of the project in April, connecting Baler to Laoag and Metro Manila. This year, phases two and three will extend the fiber backbone from Metro Manila to Southern Luzon, and the project will further involve laying submarine cables to link the Visayas and Mindanao regions.

In addition to expanding the national fiber backbone, the loan will

SENATE President Francis Escudero on Wednesday said it is up to Senator Ronald Dela Rosa to heed the House invitation to attend the hearing on the bloody drug war during the administration of former President Rodrigo Duterte.

Escudero noted that inter-chamber courtesy dictates that the House may issue invites to members of the Senate. However, Escudero emphasized that the House cannot and should not issue a compulsory process against a member of a co-equal chamber.

The same rules, Escudero said, apply to the Senate vis-a-vis House members. "It is an invite, and the invitee may voluntarily go or decide not to," Escudero said.

We can save thousands of Filipino lives—Speaker

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Wednesday said the government can save thousands of Filipinos suffering from kidney problems who have to undergo dialysis, which is not a cure but can extend the patient’s life.

Romualdez made the statement during the groundbreaking of the biggest hemodialysis center in the country at the National Kidney and Transplant Institute (NKTI) in Quezon City.

‘Monster’ CCG ship sails near El Nido, says military

THE Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) on Tuesday reported the sighting of the Chinese Coast Guard’s (CCG) biggest vessel near BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal.

In a statement, the AFP said the sighting of the 12,000-ton Chinese ship was part of the claimant’s “broader pattern of intrusive patrol” aimed at asserting unlawful claims over the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines (AFP) closely monitors all activities in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) as part of our commitment to maritime domain awareness and the protection of our territorial integrity, sovereignty, and sovereign rights.” the AFP said.

On Monday, a West Philippine Sea monitor saw the monster ship of CCG near the Philippine naval post in Ayungin Shoal.

“As of 9:00am, the 12,000-ton CCG vessel “passed close” to the Philippines’ naval post and was heading north,” Maritime Security Expert Ray Powell said.

This came after the June 17 ramming incident in the area between the Philippine Navy and CCG that left injuries.

Powell also said that the CCG ship, which also entered the WPS last month, did not intend to stay within the vicinity of the shoal.

The AFP assured that they remain vigilant and steadfast in their mission to uphold international maritime laws, specifically the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS).

“We emphasize that such actions by the CCG are illegal, coercive, and contrary to the spirit of maintaining peace and stability in the region,” the AFP reiterated.

“Our forces will continue to monitor and report any developments in the WPS in the performance of our mandate. We call on all nations to respect international law and to refrain from actions that escalate tensions in the WPS.”

Hontiveros received the information from the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) database. “The spelling of their names are the same, but their faces are so different,” she said at the resumption of the Senate Committee on Women, Children, Family Relations and Gender Equality hearing.

whom they would like to serve them in whatever government position.

House Speaker Martin Romualdez also said he sees nothing wrong with the Duterte family's supposed plans to field three senatorial bets in the May 2025 midterm polls.

"Well it's a democratic nation that we live in, so any Filipino has the right provided that they have the proper qualifications to seek for higher office," he said.

Vice President Sara Duterte had earlier disclosed that her father, former president Rodrigo Duterte; and siblings Davao City 1st district Rep. Paolo Duterte and Davao City Mayor Sebastian Duterte are all running for the Senate in 2025.

She said that Mayor Duterte even plans to run for president during the 2028 presidential elections

He said the announcement, which was made by Vice President Sara Duterte, is a signal of the start of politicking in the country for the midterm elections.

Escudero however said the last day of filing of the certificates of candidacies is still far.

He said many things can still happen before the deadline this coming October.l

Former Senator Antonio Trillanes IV described as a 'worst-scenario' the running of the three Dutertes.

Trillanes said while it is only the former President who has been entering the "Magic 12" of possible winning senators, he admitted the chances of his two sons cannot be underestimated.

Trillanes said the Dutertes have enough money to bankroll their run for

2010s under the Special Investor’s Resident Visa (SIRV) program.

“As has already been reported, Alice Guo's Chinese identity appears to be Guo Huaping, fully Chinese with two Chinese parents,” Hontiveros reiterated. She noted that in the NBI document, the other ‘Alice Leal Guo’ was also born on July 12, 1986 in Tarlac.

"Is it a coincidence that this NBI clearance was applied for just a few days before the date of filing of the delayed registration of birth of the other Alice Leal Guo in Tarlac City?

Or is this a case of stolen identity?" the senator wondered. Hontiveros said it is possible that

“Each dialysis machine that will be used here is equivalent to a life that can be saved, a family that will have hope, and dreams that can be fulfilled,” he said, adding that “this project will have a great impact on the lives of ordinary Filipinos. They don't have to travel far or spend a lot of money just to get treatment. Here, they will have access to modern facilities and quality services to alleviate their illness.”

Kidney ailments are among the top disease-killers of Filipinos. More than one million of the country’s popula-

awareness of the situation,” he said.

The National Security Council, for its part, on Wednesday said it thinks China also wants to scale down the tension in the West Philippine Sea.

“We feel in the NSC that China also wants to de-escalate the situation," NSC spokesperson Jonathan Malaya said.

"There are official, non-official channels with China to find common grounds and solutions to these problems," he said.

However, Malaya said the Philippines must be realistic in the discussions with China.

“We enter discussions with China with an open-mind. That means, we need to be realistic,” he said.

“We know that there is a possibility of deception. We are not sure about their sincerity but that does not mean we will not talk with them," Malaya added.

An alliance of 33 major FilipinoChinese chambers of commerce and civic organizations also called for di-

national elections.

He also believes that the three Dutertes will indeed seek Senate seats.

"If they won't run, it would mean that the Vice President is a liar," the former senator said Meanwhile, Former Senator Panfilo Lacson is taking the recent announcement of Vice President Sara Duterte with a grain of salt because “the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.”

“I don’t think there is any firm decision made by any of the three Dutertes,” Lacson said.

Lacson said he believes the vice president is using a political strategy straight out of her father’s playbook, dropping random soundbites to keep themselves in the headlines and their opponents guessing.

Lacson however noted that having three Dutertes in the Senate next year remains within the realm of possibility. The same can be said of the other seasoned and emerging political clans such as the Villars, Tulfos, Cayetanos, and Ejercito-Estradas.

“Senate 2025: 3 Duterte’s, 3 Tulfo’s, 2 Villar’s, 2 Cayetano’s, 2 Ejercito-Estrada’s, and the list goes on… because it is what it is - by the people, for the people, of the people (sic),” the former senator posted on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Wednesday.

ACT-CIS party-list Rep. Erwin Tulfo and media personality Ben Tulfo are reportedly seeking senatorial seats next year, joining their brother Senator Raffy Tulfo.

Las Piñas Rep. Camille Villar is said to be planning to switch positions with her mother, outgoing Senator Cynthia Villar, who will move to local politics. The Villar daughter is expected to team up with her brother Senator Mark Villar in the upper chamber.

Guo assumed the identity of a Fili

pino woman and waited for a decade to run for public office in Bamban. She already requested the NBI to search for the other ‘Alice Leal Guo’ who could help shed light on this development.

The new information left the senator puzzled as regards the intentions and reasons behind this possible case of stolen identity on the part of Guo. The mayor failed to attend Wednesday’s Senate hearing because she was not feeling well, according to her legal counsel.

“She feels stressed and sick,” lawyer Stephen David told reporters on behalf of the mayor.

Romualdez said the 13-story NKTI Hemodialysis Center is part of the Legacy Specialty Hospital Project of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. He said NKTI is among specialty hospitals built during the first Marcos administration by then First Lady Imelda Romualdez Marcos, which also include Heart Center, Children’s Medical Center and Lung Center. He pointed out that the hemodialysis facility would also train health professionals. The House leader called the facility as the Mega Hemodialysis

plomacy to deescalate the recent disputes in the West Philippine Sea.

“We appeal to the governments of the Philippines and China to consider paths that will safeguard the peace, order, and safety of both countries and its peoples. Instead of strife, let us choose harmony,” the group said.

“Our nations have consistently showcased the manifold benefits of mutual respect. As such, we implore both sides to refrain from actions or declarations that will only fuel the already precarious situation.”

As this developed, former Senator Leila de Lima urged President Marcos Jr. to cooperate with the International Criminal Court's investigation into the former President’s the bloody drug war.

Marcos "must consider aiding the enforcement" of a potential arrest warrant for Duterte, she said in an interview with ABS-CBN.

De Lima said this is an opportune moment for Marcos to show the international community that he promotes and protects human rights.

According to Escudero, Dela Rosa has expressed to him his position, and at this time, Dela Rosa “is not inclined to attend.”

"I told him that I support whatever decision he will arrive at regarding this matter. I will always be a vanguard and guard the rights, privileges, and prerogatives of the Senate and members of the Senate," Escudero said.

Earlier, Dela Rosa said he would not attend the House hearing upon the advice of Escudero.

Although he has not received an official invitation yet from the House Committee on Human Rights, Dela Rosa said he sought Escudero's guid-

Romualdez thanked NKTI officers and personnel for their dedication and tireless service to kidney patients and other Filipinos seeking health care at the hospital. He also expressed his gratitude to the DPWH and the private sector, which have partnered through the government’s Public-Private Partnership Program to undertake NKTI’s hemodialysis center project.

Manila hopes to convene the Philippines-China Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea in early July "specifically to discuss the recent incidents," Manalo said. Manila also accused the Chinese coast guard of looting guns and damaging three boats as well as navigational and communication equipment.

Beijing insisted its coast guard behaved in a "professional and restrained" way and blamed Manila for the clash.

In previous confrontations, Chinese forces have used water cannon and military-grade lasers and collided with Filipino resupply vessels and their escorts.

The national fiber backbone and broadband program have long been part of the Philippines' digital vision. Completion of the backbone is anticipated by 2028, aiming to reduce internet costs and enhance speeds to match those of ASEAN counterparts.

"We should be able to bring down the cost of internet and to also increase the speed of internet at par with our regional counterparts in the ASEAN for this project," Uy said.

NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan, on the other hand, said the project will help spur economic development by giving more Filipinos access to different markets.

"I sought the advice of the Senate President on what to do. For me, there's no problem, I can face them anytime. But still, I have to follow the guidance of the Senate President being a member of the institution, the Senate of the Philippines,” Dela Rosa said.

According to Dela Rosa, Escudero told him that “you don’t have to attend.”

Dela Rosa clarified he is only following the long-time tradition in the Senate to follow the Senate President.

"We have to seek guidance because that is an enshrined practice, tradition among chambers of legislature to observe inter-parliamentary courtesy," he said. "Every time you make an official act, the Senate leadership knows that to avoid blaming each other if you will make your own decision.”

At the same time, Dela Rosa challenged those saying that he and former President Rodrigo Duterte should be held accountable for their roles in the campaign against illegal drugs to file appropriate cases in Philippine courts.

"If she has the goods, then by all means you have to file the case against us...We are ready to face any court in the Philippines," he said. Macon Ramos-Araneta

DOJ okay with gag order on Degamo murder case

THE Department of Justice (DOJ)

on Wednesday confirmed that the Regional Trial Court of Manila City has issued a gag order enjoining all parties from discussing the merits of the murder case filed against expelled Negros Oriental Rep. Arnolfo Teves Jr. and several others, in connection with the murder of Negros Oriental Gov. Roel Degamo and nine others last March 4, 2023.

DOJ spokesman Jose Dominic Clavano said the DOJ welcomes the issuance of the gag order as this would stop the proliferation of propaganda and fake news in connection with the case.

“We would rather do this behind closed doors because the operational details involved in this case are very sensitive, so we welcome the gag order by the judge,” Clavano said.

“I think it is very prudent and diligent for him to issue such an order. We would comply with the order because we would rather battle it out in court,” the DOJ official added.

According to Clavano, it has been the position of the justice department that the details of the case should only be discussed in the proper forum which is the court.

With the issuance of the gag order, Clavano said all parties should refrain from discussing the case in social media, mainstream media and other venues outside the court.

“We are not allowed anymore to mention or discuss matters that go into the merits of the case. On our part, we trust and we respect that decision because we know the right process is through the court,” he said.

The murder case in connection with the Degamo killing is being tried before the sala of Manila RTC Branch 51 Presiding Judge Merianthe Pacita Zuraek.

Binay questions Comelec decision on EM BO voters

MAKATI City Mayor Abigail Binay questioned the Commission on Elections (Comelec) decision to allow residents of EMBO (Enlisted Men’s Barrio) barangays, formerly under the city’s jurisdiction, to vote for city councilors but not for their representatives in Congress.

Binay argues that both city councilors and members of Congress are elected by legislative districts.

“It seems that the poll body has forgotten that city councilors are elected by legislative district. If the EMBO residents can vote for city councilors, this means they are part of a legislative district. Then why can’t they vote for their congressional representative?” Binay said.

DMW eyeing stricter measures for Kuwait-bound workers

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) will enforce stricter measures in the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Kuwait to protect them from abuses and from illegal recruiters.

Migrant workers secretary Hans Leo Cacdac made the announcement after the Philippines and Kuwait governments had reached an agreement to resume the recruitment of domestic workers.

Cacdac assured Kuwait-bound of heightened protection and enhanced monitoring of their conditions with the lifting of visa to Kuwait.

He said the deployment of professional, skilled, and semi-skilled Filipino workers to the Middle Eastern country will resume, while domestic workers may also be deployed, provided that they have worked overseas.

“Among the measures included in the implementation of a system for the Blacklist and White list of Recruitment Agencies and employers that will

participate in the resumption of deployment, the provision of salaries of OFWs through electronic payment to ensure timely payment of wages, and the appointment of welfare officers to monitor, report, and assist OFWs in the whole-cycle of their labor migration,” the DMW said, adding that “both countries also agreed to establish a joint technical working committee to immediately and periodically meet and resolve labor-related issues and other concerns,” he said.

The DMW chief said the lifting of the deployment ban would reopen opportunities for professional, skilled, and semi-skilled Filipino workers to work in Kuwait while domestic workers should have prior experience working overseas before they can be deployed to Kuwait.

To further ensure OFW protection, the Philippines and Kuwait also agreed to establish a joint technical working committee to periodically meet to resolve labor-related issues and other concerns.

The Comelec claims it does not know in which of Taguig’s two legislative districts EMBO residents belong. The 10 EMBO barangays were part of Makati’s second district before the Supreme Court declared them part of Taguig.

Binay expressed disappointment at the Comelec decision, stating that the right to be represented in Congress is a basic principle in a democracy and that the decision denies the EMBO residents of this right.

She also called on Taguig local government to fight for the right of EMBO residents to vote for their congressional representative.

Comelec Chairman George Erwin Garcia announced on Tuesday that residents of the 10 EMBO barangays, formerly under Makati City’s jurisdiction, will be able to vote in the 2025 polls for local and national elective positions, except for the congressman position.

The mayor emphasized that their rights must be defended and that the Taguig leadership should not be complicit in the suppression of the rights of EMBO residents.

THE Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has recommended to the Land Transportation Office (LTO) to suspend the license of a jeepney driver who body-shamed a female passenger.

“The Board hereby recommends to the LTO that the driver’s license of Mr. Arneto Palisan, be suspended in accordance with Republic Act 4136,” the agency’s June 25 order read.

The LTFRB would impose a P15,000-fine to the driver as well as the jeepney owner for employing a discourteous driver, as well as for the driver’s and conductor’s unwanted comments on the passenger’s physical appearance.

The evidence presented in the hearing of the body-shaming case “tilts in favor of the complainant.”

“The act of the driver and his conductor is not only abominable but has no place in a civilized society. The degradation and humiliation suffered by the complainant coupled with the brazen admission and unapologetic behavior of the driver and his conductor deserved scant penalty from this office,” the agency board said. Should similar acts be repeated, the board said it will deal with the matter accordingly.

Previously, the LTFRB issued a show-cause order directing the complainant, franchise owner, and the involved driver to appear for a hearing on June 14.

Taguig City police hold drug awareness seminar

THE Taguig City Police Station recently participated in the annual International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking on June 25, at Lakeshore Hall, New Lower Bicutan, Taguig City.

Furthermore, the Taguig City Police Station provided subject matter expert Police Corporal Jestonie Señoron, CAS PNCO, Drug Clearing PNCO, who discussed the salient features of R.A. 9165 series of 2022 and drug awareness.

The event was graced by the presence of the Taguig Police Chief together with Mayor Maria Laarni Cayetano, Councilor Yasser Pangandangan, Chairman on Peace and Order, Secretary Catalino Uy, Chairman of the Dangerous Drug Board, and an estimated crowd of 200 participants adorned the event.

It is crucial to educate and empower the community and youth about the dangers of drug abuse, promote prevention strategies, and foster a drug-free lifestyle to safeguard their well-being and contribute to a healthier society.

Moreover, the Taguig Police chief underscored the pivotal role of parents in guiding their children and stressed the significance of every branch of government in preventing and maintaining peace and order through collaborative efforts. Vince Lopez

OPINION

The PAREX project is back

IT LOOKS like the Pasig River Expressway project of San Miguel is back as a live project.

When San Miguel’s RSA bagged the P157 billion airport project some time ago, he announced that being sensitive to public calls he was abandoning PAREX.

The announcement to proceed was even timed almost at the same time when PBBM and the First Lady were inaugurating the second phase of the Pasig Promenade Project.

We do not know if this was intentional but it was ominous.

To make the project more attractive, a bike lane and a walkway are being incorporated into the new plan together with bus stations if I understood what was said correctly.

Even with all these, however, PAREX this time around will encounter serious obstacles.

There are now more government requirements like an Environmental Clearance Certificate plus all the LGUs where the PAREX passes must agree.

Another is the negative impact of PAREX on the Pasig Promenade Project of the First Couple.

The new alignment must also be such that the environment and other heritage areas will be preserved.

Of the three, the second is perhaps the most serious obstacle.

Would the TRB, for instance, dare green light the PAREX if it will negatively affect a beautification project the First Couple said they will give their fullest support to and want it finished in three years?

It would be interesting to see how DPWH or TRB will navigate this issue.

But will the PAREX negatively impact the Pasig River Promenade Project?

The short answer is yes.

But it will depend on the final design of the Expressway which has not yet been made public.

It will also depend on how far the Pasig Promenade will go.

So, PAREX will certainly impact the Promenade Project and the environment as a whole. We just cannot say at this time.

Pasig River is not really all that wide.

Some areas have in fact been reclaimed due to development.

There are also several bridges like the Guadalupe Bridge in addition to the MRT Bridge passing above it.

But the proponents will almost certainly argue that in the end the benefits that will be derived from the project will outweigh the drawbacks. Whether the government will buy this argument is another matter.

The way I see it, however, is the opposing groups have a better chance of finally shelving the project permanently.

As marketed by the proponents, PAREX will absorb and divert a lot of the traffic from current East to West roads and vice versa, thereby providing an alternative route.

This is the same argument used in the construction of the Skyway project.

It was said upon completion of the Skyway, EDSA traffic will be decongested.

But as we can see this is not happening.

This could mean there may not be enough entry and exit ramps or the ramps were not placed where they are needed the most.

Whether the best solution is constructing an elevated road along the Pasig River is what the debate is all about

This could be the reason why motorists continue to use EDSA in spite of the traffic congestion.

Another reason could be that not enough traffic study was done which normally should have been undertaken hand and hand with the civil engineering plans before the construction.

We have to remember also that PAREX will be entirely different from the current East-West roads where many of the areas being traversed are destinations in themselves.

In PAREX, the Eastern end is basically residential areas while the Western end is somewhere in the mouth of the Pasig River.

There can be no stopping in between unless a vehicle exits the ramps because the road is elevated.

The number of ramps envisioned also seems to be insufficient.

And if vehicles cannot stop on PAREX unless on an emergency, why the need for a bus station and where will it be constructed?

PAREX has gotten more complicated.

Finally, that there’s a need for an East to West corridor is beyond question.

Whether the best solution is constructing an elevated road along the Pasig River is what the debate is all about.

And it is all due to aesthetics, heritage and environmental issues.

A long view on rice

(Conclusion)

THE reality is the long aspired for selfsufficiency in rice is hardly achievable in the next five years, with our population ever growing and our farmlands less productive and decreasing.

Unfortunately, neither is rice importation going to be easy.

More than 90 percent of the world’s rice is produced and consumed in the Asia-Pacific region, which means riceproducing nations are also the biggest rice-consumers.

Only 7 percent of the world’s rice production is exportable.

That means we have to compete with other countries, notably Indonesia, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and China among others to get our share of that thin export volume to augment our local shortfall. Then again, our country hosts on average of 20 typhoons each year, some quite destructive, especially if it hits Northern and Central Luzon, even the Mindoro provinces and Panay Island at or near harvest-time.

Thus the need for buffer stocking on the part of government.

But under our procurement laws,

government can only import when the shortage is imminent. With the RTA, the NFA cannot import rice.

We thus compete with other countries for thin exportable volumes, as in the present situation.

It would be prudent to get our economic managers and the DA to forecast our import requirements till 2028

Thus, it would be prudent to get our economic managers and the DA to forecast our import requirements till 2028, and negotiate supply contracts, preferably on a government-to-government basis. Vietnam has been our consistent supplier of rice, and, last January, we concluded a general supply agreement with it.

We probably could try Cambodia, if its milling facilities and port capabilities have improved.

Our Canada connection

AMID Beijing’s increasingly aggressive behavior in the South China Sea, the Philippines has correctly adopted the strategy of forging military and security alliances with friendly countries.

Apart from the United States with which we have the Mutual Defense Treaty forged as far back as 1951 and still in effect at this time, we have lately begun to build an international united front to muster support from such countries as Japan and the members of the European Union.

The recent addition to the growing list of countries that have expressed support for our assertion of sovereign rights in the West Philippine Sea on the basis of the favorable ruling of the Permanent Arbitral Tribunal in The Hague in 2016 is Canada.

The North American country recently joined its first joint patrol with the Philippines in the South China Sea as part of a multilateral maritime coop-

erative activity (MMCA), along with Japan and the United States, to uphold freedom of navigation and overflight amid Beijing’s growing assertiveness in the contested waters.

The Royal Canadian Navy deployed a frigate to join the Philippine Navy’s patrol ship, Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force’s destroyer, and the US Navy’s guided-missile destroyer on June 16-17.

Canada has consistently expressed support for the Philippines in the face of China’s coercive actions in the WPS

The maritime activity took place as China again harassed a Philippine resupply mission to Ayungin (Second Thomas) Shoal, a low-tide elevation that lies within the Philippines’ 370-kilometer exclusive economic zone, some 194 kilometers off Palawan province.

Philippine political dynamics, few figures capture the nation’s intrigue quite like Vice President Sara Duterte.

Her recent resignation as Education Secretary has set off a flurry of speculation, with some suggesting she is positioning herself as a leader of the opposition.

Yet, House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez offers a more measured perspective, urging a wait-and-see approach.

This stance, far from being merely cautious, may be the most astute response amidst the political maelstrom.

Romualdez’s assertion that Duterte should not yet be considered part of the opposition is grounded in a nuanced understanding of political dynamics.

His respect for the Vice President’s decision to leave the Marcos Cabinet underscores a commitment to civility and due process in political discourse.

It is a stance that invites a deeper look at the motivations and implications of Duterte’s actions and the broader context in which they unfold.

From a strategic viewpoint, Romualdez’s position is compelling.

Vice President Duterte’s resignation could be interpreted as a tactical retreat rather than a full-fledged alignment with the opposition.

This is a critical distinction in a political landscape where allegiances can shift rapidly.

By not rushing to label her as opposition, Romualdez leaves room for Duterte to navigate her political future without the immediate burden of opposition expectations.

The speculation from various political blocs further enriches the narrative.

Former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque suggests Duterte’s resignation could mark the beginning of her opposition leadership.

This view is supported by her de-

While India is the biggest producer of rice, it also has 1.5 billion mouths to feed, and obviously needs to prioritize domestic needs.

The same is true of China, which has in fact been importing rice for their consumption requirements.

Thailand exports less, and prefers to sell its high-priced jasmine.

Depending on risk analysis, our big rice millers can set up and build modern rice mills such as we have in Isabela and Central Luzon in other countries, like Cambodia and Myanmar. We can even go into contract farming and milling in Papua New Guinea to ensure our supply.

Malaysia imports roughly 30-35 percent of its rice needs, devoting its land

gional and international cooperation in the maritime domain,” according to the US Indo-Pacific Command.

The multilateral exercise involved a series of activities and maritime maneuvers to test and validate the interoperability of the armed forces’ doctrines, tactics, techniques, and procedures.

Cooperation such as this reflects the approach of the four countries to a secure and prosperous region where aircraft and ships of all nations may fly, sail, and operate anywhere international law allows.

The Philippines first started a maritime cooperative activity with the United States and Australia separately in November. An inaugural MMCA by the Philippines, the US, Australia and Japan took place in April.

Canada has consistently expressed support for the Philippines in the face of China’s coercive actions in the WPS.

Early this year, we signed a memorandum of understanding with Canada on defense cooperation that could later lead to a visiting forces agreement. This is a positive development that reflects its unequivocal support for our unyielding stance on the maritime dispute in the West Philippine Sea.

Sara Duterte’s resignation: Strategic withdrawal or opposition pivot?

parture from the political party Lakas-CMD, led by Romualdez, and the subsequent tension within the Marcos administration.

Yet, this interpretation is not universally accepted.

The Makabayan bloc, for instance, questions whether Duterte possesses the qualities traditionally associated with an opposition leader, such as a staunch pro-human rights stance and a firm anticorruption agenda.

Romualdez’s assertions seem particularly prescient when contrasted with these speculations.

By reserving judgment on Sara Duterte’s alignment, Romualdez upholds a standard of political discourse that values thoughtfulness and respect

While Roque’s declarations may capture headlines, they lack the nuanced consideration of Duterte’s political maneuvering that Romualdez provides.

The doubts raised by the Makabayan bloc highlight the complexity of Duterte’s political identity and suggest her path to opposition leadership is not straightforward.

Moreover, the broader context of Duterte’s resignation includes contentious issues like the removal of her requested confidential funds for the Department of Education and the Office of the Vice President.

These funds were redirected to agencies protecting the West Philippine Sea, a move that adds another layer of complexity to her departure.

Romualdez’s respect for Duterte’s de-

to higher value crops, but has gone into long-term supply contracts with Southeast Asian countries. It matters little which agency handles these importations.

So Congress can quibble less about agencies it does not trust, let the Office of the President handle the importations with complete transparency, and let our legislators amend our procurement laws to allow for a longer view on staples and other strategic commodities.

In summation, a long view on our perennial rice supply problem should:

1. Gradually reduce per capita consumption through proper education on nutritional values of food, re-introducing white corn, kamote and saba banan-

cision, despite these contentious circumstances, demonstrates a commitment to respecting individual political journeys. Looking at precedents, political leaders often make strategic withdrawals or re-alignments without immediately transitioning into opposition roles.

Romualdez’s approach allows for a period of recalibration, during which Duterte can redefine her political stance.

This is crucial in a political environment where premature declarations can close off potential alliances and strategies.

From a policy perspective, Romualdez’s call for patience is also wise. It acknowledges the potential for Duterte to influence Philippine politics from a position that is not strictly oppositional.

This flexibility could be beneficial for the country, allowing for a more collaborative approach to governance, even amidst political disagreements.

As the drama unfolds, several recommendations emerge.

First, it is crucial for political leaders and commentators to maintain a balanced view of Duterte’s actions, avoiding hasty conclusions about her political future.

Second, fostering a political culture that respects strategic withdrawals and re-alignments can lead to more thoughtful and effective governance.

Finally, ensuring that political discourse remains focused on substantive policy issues, rather than solely on political maneuvering, will benefit the Filipino people.

In the end, Romualdez’s perspective may indeed be the most insightful. By reserving judgment on Duterte’s alignment, he upholds a standard of political discourse that values thoughtfulness and respect.

As the nation watches and waits, this approach could prove to be a stabilizing force in the ever-shifting landscape of Philippine politics.

as as staples;

2. Make an honest to goodness assessment of lands best suited for rice, and shifting to crops which can give farmers better incomes;

3. Increase the production of vegetables and legumes such that they become more affordable and thus reduce the over-consumption of rice, as has been done in other countries;

4. Fix our needed infrastructure, from real and not legislator-initiated farm-to-market roads, to better port facilities and other logistical requirements. Given our high inter-island shipping costs, isn’t it about time we do away with the Cabotage law?; (Full article online)

Protect nesting sites of sea turtles—DENR

THE Department of Environment and Natural Resources on Wednesday appealed anew to the public to protect the nesting site of marine turtles.

The plea was raised following the discovery of an egg-laying by the critically endangered Leatherback turtle (Dermochelys coriacea) in Sta. Ana, Cagayan.

“When a female sea turtle is ready to lay eggs, she returns to the nesting beach where she was born according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. This gives us more reason to pursue our goal to put up a marine scientific research station in the said town,” DENR Secretary Maria Antonia Loyzaga said.

The marine turtle laid eggs for the third time along a shoreline in Barangay Centro, about six kilometers from the protected landscapes and seascapes of Palaui Island.

Citing a scientified study, Loyzaga said a sea turtle takes 20 to 30 years to mature and can lay eggs several times during nesting. Rio N. Araja

Lazatin sees smooth sailing to Congress

NEARLY all of the 87 barangays in the first district of Pampanga were expected to support the congressional bid of Angeles City Mayor Carmelo Lazatin Jr. in next year’s elections.

June Marimla, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay in Magalang town, expressed the support of his peers in Magalang for Lazatin.

Rey Pineda, president of the Liga ng mga Barangay in Mabalacat City, echoed the same sentiments and declared support for Lazatin.

Earlier, some 600 officers of sectoral groups from Angeles City, Mabalacat City, and Magalang, including women and other sectors of society pledged to back Lazatin’s legislative candidacy.

DATU Odin Sinsuat, Maguindanao—The Moro Islamic Liberation Front’s (MILF) United Bangsamoro Justice Party (UBJP) drew a huge crowd estimated at 149,000 people to its general assembly of members and supporters here over the weekend.

UBJP president and Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM) Chief Minister Al-Haj Murad Ebrahim swore in the new party members during the assembly.

Ebrahim said the May 2025 elections may still be far, “but we will fight; and it will be a fight between the seekers of change with you, and of those who seek more power from you.”

BARMM Education Minister Mohagher Iqbal appealed for clean elections: “When the time comes in May 2025 that the Moro people will take part in charting the course of their future in some crucial decisions that they shall make.”

Iqbal said no one would be left behind in the current leadership of the Bangsamoro government, adding “this is the battle cry that we inculcate in our children in their struggle for education.”

Maguindanao del Norte Gov. Abdulraof Macacua said peaceful elections will prevail for the UBJP which promotes “stillness in the midst of the braves; and firmness among cowards.”

Iqbal described as “inseparable” the MILF top leaders headed by Ibrahim and Macacua from the start of the latest wave of the Moro struggle some 50 years ago.

Macacua, known as military chief Sammy Gambar of the MILF said “in every military engagement (in a conflict), occupying the high ground is a vantage position.” In parliamentary struggle, he said, “people who struggle to occupy the high moral ground are better positioned.”

The Mindanao State University Maguindanao Campus opened its gates for people wanting to partake of the event.

The organizers said the assembly was called for party supporters and members from Central Mindanao provinces of the BARMM, namely, Maguindanao del Norte, Maguindanao del Sur, Lanao del Sur, the cities of Cotabato and Marawi.

However, they also expected attendees from Basilan, Sulu, and Tawi-Tawi.

Among the attendees were thousands of Christians backing the UBJP membership of members of parliament Ramon Piang, Jr., a distinguished leader of the local Indigenous People’s (IP) Community, lawyer Mary Ann Arnado as vice presidents for Settler Communities, and Ramon Piang, Jr. representing the indigenous peoples sector. Solons warn La Niña may bring about brownouts

AS THE Philippines braces for the onset of La Niña, a group of lawmakers have called for a comprehensive review of the national power situation.

Rep. Jefferson Khonghun of Zambales expressed serious concerns about the potential effects of widespread power outages, and questioned the preparedness of power companies to ensure a stable supply of electricity.

Khonghun stressed that an immediate action is needed. “La Niña is not just a weather event; it is a potential disruptor of daily life and economic activities. We cannot afford to wait until it strikes to realize that we are unprepared. The power companies must assure us that they have contingency plans in place.”

“Our energy infrastructure has to be resilient. Any weakness in our power grid could lead to severe consequences for our people and the economy,” Khonghun said. Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong of Lanao del Sur echoed the same sentiments even as he highlighted the critical need for reliable electricity during such times.

“Our constituents rely heavily on consistent power supply for their day-to-day needs and safety. Any lapse could have dire consequences. We need transparency and proactive measures from our power providers to mitigate any risks associated with La Niña,” Alonto said.

“It is the duty of power companies to provide clear communication and updates to the public, ensuring that everyone is adequately prepared,” he added.

Health officials: Dengue cases rising in Iloilo province

THE Iloilo Provincial Health Office (PHO) has raised concerns over rising incidence of dengue in the province, with 115 new cases recorded in just one week.

The PHO reported they have logged a total of 1,289 dengue cases since January, representing a 79-percent increase compared to the 723 cases recorded during the same period in 2023.

Five fatalities have also been attributed to the outbreak this year.

The report revealed that 80 percent (1,035) of these cases were classified as probable, while the remaining 20 percent (259) were considered suspected. Majority of those affected are children aged 1 to 10 years.

Zelenskyy to sign security pledges at EU summit

PARIS – Ukrainian leader Volodymyr Zelenskyy will attend Thursday’s European Union summit in Brussels where he is expected to sign an agreement on EU security commitments for Ukraine, the French president’s office said.

“President Zelenskyy will be there at the opening of the European Council for the discussion on Ukraine and in particular on the subject of security commitments,” the office of French President Emmanuel Macron said on Tuesday.

According to European officials, an agreement on these security guarantees has been approved by member countries and is due to be signed Thursday.

Like the other security pacts signed by Ukraine, this EU agreement is meant to firm up support for the future.

In Moscow, Russian Defense Minister Andrei Belousov and his US counterpart Lloyd Austin spoke by phone to discuss the conflict in Ukraine, Moscow’s defense ministry said.

The United States is one of Ukraine’s staunchest military backers, contributing billions of dollars’ worth of aid and drawing condemnation from Russia, which has accused Washington of “direct involvement” in the hostilities.

Russia’s defense ministry said in a statement Belousov and Austin had “exchanged views on the situation around Ukraine”, noting the conversation took place “at the initiative of the American side”.

“Andrei Belousov pointed to the danger of further escalation of the situation in connection with the ongoing supply of US weapons to the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” it continued.

US reporter Gershkovich’s closed-door trial begins

YEKATERINBURG, Russia – US journalist Evan Gershkovich’s closed-door trial for espionage began in Russia on Wednesday, 15 months after his shock arrest on charges he, his employer and the White House reject as false. The Wall Street Journal correspondent became the first Western journalist to be arrested for spying in Russia since the Cold War when he was detained in March 2023 on a reporting trip to the Urals city of Yekaterinburg.

Gershkovich smiled and greeted journalists in Yekaterinburg’s Sverdlovsk Regional Court with a barely audible “hi,” as he stood inside

TOKYO –Japan’s government is calling for stricter oversight of US troops stationed in the country after a soldier was charged over the alleged sexual assault of a Japanese teenager in Okinawa.

Prosecutors in the southern island region charged the US soldier in March, top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi told reporters on Tuesday.

Local media said the 25-year-old man had been accused of assault, adding he knew the girl was under 16, the age of consent in Japan.

The government expressed “regret” to US Ambassador Rahm Emanuel over the incident and called for stronger oversight of behavior by military personnel, Hayashi said.

Okinawa accounts for just 0.6 percent of Japan’s land mass but hosts about 70 percent of all the US military bases and facilities in the country.

A litany of base-related woes has long grieved Okinawans, from pollution to noise and helicopter crashes, leading to complaints they bear the brunt of hosting troops. AFP

Singapore says it seized $4 b in dirty money

SINGAPORE – Singapore has seized S$6 billion ($4.4 billion) linked to crime and money laundering since 2019, the wealthy city state said Wednesday, after a massive dirty money scandal marred its squeaky clean reputation last year.

Singapore conducted multiple raids last year in a S$3 billion money laundering case, one of the world’s largest, which resulted in the seizure of properties, cars, and luxury goods as well as the arrest of several foreigners.

“As an international financial and business hub, we recognise that we face greater money laundering and terrorism financing risks,” Prime Minister Lawrence Wong said Wednesday at an event hosted by the Financial Action Task Force, a global financial crime association.

“But we are determined to do what is needed to respond to these risks and safeguard Singapore’s reputation as a trusted financial centre.”

SEOUL – North Korea test-fired what appeared to be a hypersonic missile on Wednesday, but the launch ended in a mid-air explosion, an official from Seoul’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said.

The JCS official said the test of what appeared to be a hypersonic missile ended in failure after a journey of some 250 kilometers.

More smoke than usual appeared to emanate from the missile, raising the possibility of combustion issues, the official said, adding it may have been powered by solid propellants.

Japan also confirmed the launch, with its coast guard saying the missile splashed down in the Sea of Japan, also known as the East Sea.

“Vessels please be careful about information to come and refrain from approaching if fallen objects are spotted, and report relevant information to the coast guard,” it said on its website.

The test follows North Korea launching hundreds more trash-carrying balloons southward on Monday and Tuesday, the latest in a series of border barrages that have sparked a tit-for-tat propaganda campaign.

Seoul’s military said the balloons were carrying “mostly paper waste” that posed no safety risk to the public. AFP

CANBERRA – Australia’s prime minister said Wednesday he was “very pleased” by the plea deal that ended WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s long legal “saga.”

Assange is on a flight home to Australia after spending more than five years in London’s high-security Belmarsh prison fighting extradition to the United States for revealing US state secrets.

“I am very pleased that on this occasion, this has been a successful outcome that I believe overwhelmingly Australians did want to see,” Prime Minister

Anthony Albanese told parliament in Canberra.

“They will have different views about the engagement and the activities of Mr Assange but they will be pleased that the saga has been brought to an end and that he will be able to reunite with his family.” Under the plea agreement, the 52-year-old Australian citizen pleaded guilty to a single charge of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate defence information and was sentenced to time already served.

The legal drama unfolded in a court-

Lions Nation celebrates 1st year, eyes

bright future

A YEAR after expanding his role from fighter to coach and manager, former two-time ONE Lightweight MMA World Champion Eduard “Landslide” Folayang is grateful for how things have transpired.

Breaking his nearly 17-year partnership with Team Lakay to start Lions Nation MMA was a risk, especially for a fighter like Folayang, who’s still looking to revive his career. But things turned out as well as he could’ve hoped for over the past 12 months.

During this stretch, the Lions of the Cordilleras have celebrated victories left and right, none bigger than Joshua “The Passion” Pacio’s ONE Strawweight MMA World Title win.

Though he won via disqualification against Jarred “The Monkey God” Brooks, Pacio’s climb back to contendership all started with Lions Nation MMA. After all, he debuted in the team’s black and gold trunks with a tough victory over #5-ranked Mansur Malachiev.

Jeremy “The Juggernaut” Pacatiw also impressed in his Lions Nation MMA debut when he submitted Wang Shuo, while Folayang finally broke his dry spell in MMA by knocking Amir Khan out in a rematch.

“We are incredibly proud of what we have achieved in just one year. Our success is a testament to the hard work and dedication of every member of our team,” Folayang said.

“As we enter our second year, we are excited about the future and the opportunities that lie ahead.”

As successful as they have been over the past year, this team is on the hunt for further glory.

Pacio, for his part, isn’t satisfied with what they have achieved up until now, believing that they have much more success ahead of them.

Eala boosts bid for Wimby stint with win vs. French foe

WORLD no. 162 Alex Eala

hurdled the first round of the women’s singles’ qualifiers of the 2024 Wimbledon Tennis Championships on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) at the grasscourts of the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club in London.

The 19-year-old Eala, whose Women’s Tennis Association ranking went down from a career-high 157 recently, is now in the second round after she got past France’s Jessika Ponchet, 7-6, 6-4.

Eala took an hour and 48 minutes to get past Ponchet and move to a second qualifying round

encounter with 14th-seeded Tamara Zidanšek of Slovenia.

After forcing a deuce with a forehand winner, 40-all in the second, Eala gained the advantage off the French netter’s backhand error. The left-handed Eala’s forehand winner in the next play won the set for her.

Eala, who is seeking her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam event, has so far earned a total prize money of $130,741 this year (around P7.69 million). Last week, she earned $3,478 from competing in the $150,000 Venetto Open in Gaiba, Italy. While there, Eala reached the quarterfinals, where she bowed to Sara Errani, 0-6, 6-7 (3). She reached the quarterfinals after turning back Giorgia Pedone, 6-3, 6-3.

Earlier, Eala picked up $2,140 and 12 WTA points after seeing action in the qualifiers of the $267,087 Rothesay Open in Nottingham, England.

Bernardino snatches thrilling victory; Tiongko triumphs

BACOLOD—Tiffany Bernardino clinched a dramatic victory in the girls’ 13-15 category of the ICTSI Junior Philippine Golf Tour Visayas Series here yesterday, with a clutch par on the 17th hole sealing her win. Bernardino, who led from the start, finished with an 85, narrowly edging out Rane Chiu and Alexie Gabi by one stroke with a 259 total over 54 holes.

Despite a shaky start with a frontside 45, Bernardino rallied from one stroke down in the final two holes. Her pivotal par on the challenging par-4 17th hole, which Chiu and Gabi both double-bogeyed, propelled her back into the lead.

The 13-year-old from Makati matched her rivals’ bogeys on the closing par-3 hole at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club, securing her first victory in the series sponsored by ICTSI.

“I couldn’t get my game going and wasn’t able to play my best,” Bernardino admitted. “I was pressured but handled it by praying.”

Gabi, from Gen. Santos City, who defeated Bernardino by eight strokes in Iloilo, missed a par putt and a playoff crack on the 18th, settling for an 82 and a total of 260. Chiu, who

took third place in Iloilo, also scored an 82 and claimed runner-up honors via countback, earning precious points heading into the last of two Bacolod legs at Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club.

The top two players after the Visayas series will advance to the National Match Play Finals at The Country Club in October. In the boys’ 13-15 division, Nyito Tiongko mirrored Bernardino’s wire-to-wire triumph, romping away with a 10-stroke victory despite an early challenge from Iloilo leg winner Inno Flores.

The 13-year-old Cebuano, who started the final round with an 11-stroke lead, stumbled with a frontside 46 but steadied his game with pars to finish with an 84 and a total of 239. Flores, who rallied with a frontside 39, lost momentum after pulling within two strokes with eight holes to play. He played the last seven holes in eight-over, marred by a double bogey on the 16th, and wound up with an 83 for a 249.

“I never lost my confidence, even when Inno closed in,” said Tiongko, who overcame a quadruple bogey on the second hole and a triple bogey on the fourth.

MERALCO PREPARATION.

Manila Electric Company (Meralco) ramps up its upgrading and maintenance activities to strengthen and improve the resiliency of its electrical facilities against possible storms that could hit the country as the rainy season begins. Meralco crews conducted loadsplitting operations and inspected its facilities in Hidalgo Street, Pasay City to enhance the service quality and reliability in the area. Meralco also replaced dilapidated wires that caused wire sparking. Low hanging cables were also corrected to prevent illegal connections and to ensure public safety.

proposed to build a P40-billion expressway that would bridge the gap between Cavite Laguna Expressway (Calax) and the forthcoming BataanCavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB) project.

“We’re in discussion with the provincial government of Cavite on a possible Naic connection to Calax in General Trias,” CIC president and general manager Raul Ignacio said.

“The proposal is actually hinged on the completion of the Bataan-Cavite Bridge. But we were informed that the project would push through, so we need to execute the project,” he said.

The Department of Public Works and Highways earlier said the Cavite alignment of the BCIB starts from the shoreline of Barangay Timalan Balsahan in Naic, then traverses through the agricultural and residential area and terminates at Antero Soriano Highway a relative flat terrain in Barangay Timalan Balsahan and Barangay Timalan Concepcion.

ight generation companies expressed interest to participate in the competitive selection process (CSP) or bidding for 600 megawatts (MW) of baseload supply intended to meet Manila Electric Co.’s requirements starting 2025.

Meralco head of utility economics Lawrence Fernandez said the offers exceeded the 600-MW requirement of the company. “Eight gencos submitted expressions of interest by the deadline. The total offered capacity from the eight bidders was 1,870 MW, vis a vis the 600 MW requirement to be bid out,” Fernandez said.

The companies submitted

expression of interest to Meralco’s Bids and Awards Committee for power supply agreement during the June 25 deadline.

Meralco is conducting the CSP following the Department of Energy’s (DOE) issuance of a certificate of conformity to the approved-power supply procurement plan for the terms of reference (TOR) of the latest CSP.

The TOR provides that “power

suppliers with natural gas fired power plants are highly encouraged to participate in the bidding and prioritize the use of indigenous natural gas.”

This CSP involves a 15-year power supply agreement (PSA), which is targeted to start on Aug. 26, 2025. The pre-bid conference is scheduled on July 4, and the bid submission on Aug. 2, 2024. The conduct of CSPs is part of Meralco’s continuing efforts to ensure the availability of reliable, sufficient and cost-competitive power for customers.

Meralco also started the bidding for 500 MW of mid-merit renewable energy (RE) capacity and another 400 MW mid-merit capacity.

A mid-merit power plant is able to adjust its capacity based on demand at certain hours of the day.

THE Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) asked the government to adopt minimum wage-setting mechanisms that consider business productivity and financial capacity, particularly for small and medium enterprises (SMEs), alongside the workers’ well-being. This topped the list of resolutions adopted by ECOP during the 45th National Conference of Employers held

on June 25 to 26, 2024 in Manila.

The group underscored the need for a balanced approach to wage setting, ensuring sustainable job creation and business growth.

It also cited the critical need for developing a skilled workforce to thrive in a technology-driven environment.

The organization called on the government, the academe and training institutions to prioritize programs that equip Filipinos with “life skills, technological skills, and soft skills nec-

Globe, Lynk set to pilot satellite connectivity

GLOBE Telecom Inc. said Wednesday it teamed up with satellite communication company Lynk to launch a pilot program that explores using satellites to deliver mobile connectivity in remote areas of the Philippines.

The two companies signed a new agreement as a crucial step towards enhancing connectivity and communication access within the country, particularly in unserved and underserved areas. The collaboration began this month and will run until June 2025, with a live pilot trial launch anticipated within this year.

essary for employment, particularly among the youth and underserved sectors.”

It also asked the government to develop national resilience programs to support both workers and businesses facing technological disruptions, climate change impact and geopolitical challenges. The group said businesses which adopt advanced technologies and sustainable practices should be incentivized by the government.

THE Board of Investments (BOI) said Wednesday it approved the application for registration of Accutech Steel and Service Center Inc. (ASSCI) as a new producer of steel frame modules for structural building systems in the Philippines. Soon to operate in Taguig City, the project was approved under Tier III of the Strategic Investment Priority Plan (SIPP) or “highly technical manufacturing and production of innovative products”. The project, with an investment of P125 million, introduces a new production line dedicated to designing and manufacturing steel frame modules or panels from slit rolls of galvanized cold form steel (CFS), commonly referred to as light gauge steel (LGS). Accutech’s project stands out as highly technical, utilizing computeraided and controlled processes for project management, structural design and engineering. The steel frame modules are intended for structural building system applications including for houses, mid-rise buildings, factory warehouses and other residential, commercial, industrial, utility, artistic and architectural structures. DTI Undersecretary and BOI managing head Ceferino Rodolfo highlighted the project’s innovation, noting that the use of CFS/LGS framing for structural building systems is a relatively new technology for the Philippine construction industry. Othel V. Campos

The program will employ Lynk’s Low Earth Orbit (LEO) satellite constellation to deliver SMS, IP messaging apps and emergency alerts to target regions currently lacking traditional terrestrial network coverage.

These regions include far-flung locations with existing Globe enterprise clients and government installations and tourist destinations with limited or unreliable cellular coverage.

Globe aims to pilot the service in Zambales, Pangasinan, Siargao and Leyte.

“In line with our goal of empowering Filipinos through digital technology, we are looking for a solution to bring life-enabling connectivity to as many Filipinos as possible,” said Gerhard Tan, senior director and head of network strategy and innovations at Globe.

“Through this satellite-direct-tophone service, we hope to provide access wherever our customers are, connecting the unconnected through disruptive technology,” he said.

Globe signed a non-commercial memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Lynk in 2022 to conduct proof of concept (PoC) testing for the satellite-direct-to-phone (sat2phone) service using low earth orbit satellites in signal-deprived areas of Bataan. The PoC was completed on Feb. 21, 2023.

IT IS the flagship project of the highly touted Luzon Economic Corridor (LEC). Yet, its fruition may take quite some time.

The $3.3-billion Subic-Clark-ManilaBatangas (SCMB) railway project is an undertaking that will underpin the development of the LEC―one of the results of the summit between the US, Japan and the Philippines in April.

The railway project aims to streamline logistics, reduce transportation costs and promote better economic integration. Spanning 250 kilometers, it will link Subic and Batangas ports and pass through Metro Manila.

“It will connect major ports, industrial parks, special economic zones and education and employment centers in the former US bases, the capital city and a port province south of Manila,” says Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual during an investment pitch in Tokyo, Japan.

The cargo and freight service of the proposed railway will surely enhance the connectivity between Subic Bay, Clark, Manila and Batangas once the LEC is firmly established. It is intended for cargo trains and should not be confused with the North-South Commuter Railway (NSCR), which is currently under construction. The NSCR is designed for passenger transportation and is estimated to cost P873.62 billion once completed in five years.

The proposed freight service between Clark airport and Subic port alone is a boon to the Subic and Clark economic zones. Linking these hubs to the big ports of Batangas and Manila is another game changer. Subic, Clark. Manila

MREIT plans to acquire retail assets

MREIT Inc., the real estate investment trust company of Megaworld Corp., said Wednesday it plans to acquire retail assets to diversify its portfolio.

MREIT president and chief executive Kevin Andrew Tan said during the annual stockholders’ meeting the company would acquire retail assets owned by its parent firm Megaworld starting this year.

Tan said the company’s plan to diversify its assets would provide MREIT shareholders with exposure to the strong performance of the retail sector. This will also enhance the company’s overall resilience and growth prospects.

“In the long term, we are also studying other property types within the Megaworld’s portfolio that will bring value to MREIT. By broadening our investment horizon into new asset types this will ensure MREIT will have a balanced and diversified portfolio,” Tan said. Megaworld had 517,000 square meters of retail space as of end-2023.

Meanwhile, MREIT announced plans early this year to acquire six office buildings from Megaworld with

157,00 sq. m. of leasable space worth P13.15 billion.

This will be done through a property-for-share swap deal.

Office properties to be acquired by MREIT include Two West Campus, Ten West Campus and One Le Grand in McKinley West; One Fintech and Two Fintech in Iloilo Business Park; and Davao Finance Center in Davao Park District.

Megaworld will receive 926,162,000 MREIT primary shares at P14.20 apiece in exchange for the buildings.

The planned acquisition will increase MREIT’s portfolio to 428,000 sq. m., bringing the company closer to meeting its target 500,000 sq. m. of leasable space by end 2024 and 1 million sq. m. by 2030.

“This acquisition, not only enhances our portfolio but also strengthens our position in the market, allowing us to provide even more high-quality spaces to our tenants and to sustain our revenue growth,” Tan said.

and Batangas comprise 80 percent of all port traffic nationwide.

The new growth corridor, meanwhile, will accelerate investments in high-impact infrastructure projects, including the NSCR, ports modernization, clean energy, semiconductor supply chains and agribusiness.

Like any other major Philippine major infrastructure projects, the freight train service will hurdle several right-of-way problems, funding constraints at the outset despite assurance from the US and Japan, interferences from local government units and a change in presidency.

The government plans to start the construction of the Subic-Clark-Manila-Batangas railway by 2027, a year before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. ends his term. “The project design is on track for completion by 2026, with construction set to commence in 2027,” Pascual said.

The government, according to Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista, will tender the contract to a consultancy firm for a feasibility study on the railway within the year, with the Asian Development Bank funding the $8-million study.

Costly gamble

If one takes a chance, he must be sure that it is foolproof. But in a game of chance where one employs trickery, he faces impossible odds.

Three employees of a gambling operator and one game player found themselves in hot water for trying to cheat.

BingoPlus, operator of one of the country’s biggest mall-based bingo games, filed estafa charges against the four on suspicion of alleged conspiracy to cheat and win P3.96 million in jackpot prize.

Like any other major Philippine major infrastructure projects, the freight train service will hurdle several rightof-way problems, funding constraints... and a change in presidency.

The operator discovered that the player had connived with the three Bingo employees so that the numbers on his cards would be called. The staff supposed to guard against such fixing were in on it, too.

The scam was uncovered when BingoPlus conducted an investigation into the matter. The CCTV footage allegedly showed the employees were working together to ensure their accomplice would win the P3-million jackpot.

BingoPlus said it filed the charges in keeping with its commitment “to maintaining the highest standards of integrity, transparency, and trust within our community.”

The company stressed that it “has zero tolerance for any form of misconduct and will take all necessary legal actions to ensure that these individuals will be punished for their criminal actions.”

“BingoPlus remains dedicated to providing a safe, fair, and enjoyable gaming experience for all,” the company said.

The accused were identified as BingoPlus SM City Cauayan employees Jefferson Castillo, Catherine Vargas and Liwliwa Viloria, who allegedly conspired with BingoPlus player Rafael Ramirez to manipulate the result of the Bingo Milyonaryo game held in the SM City Cauayan branch of BingoPlus. If convicted, they could languish in prison for four to eight years. The four are now regretting their decision to score a quick profit. They risked imprisonment to steal over half a million pesos each. In this day and age, where CCTV cameras are everywhere, theirs was a stupid risk. It’s a crime that doesn’t need witnesses―just a CCTV camera.

BingoPlus should be commended for its efforts to hold the scammers accountable and maintain transparency.

Its decision to investigate the incident and charge those responsible shows it is serious about prosecuting scammers. The complaint also sends a clear message to anyone tempted to engage in deceitful practices―they will be caught and punished.

BingoPlus’s commitment to transparency is meritorious. It chose to be open about the incident to keep the trust of players and show fairness and integrity in the games.

The abundance of evidence gathered during the investigation highlights the operator’s effective monitoring systems―a deterrent to scammers. BingoPlus, in sum, is saying it has zero tolerance for cheating in its games.

DA to release P20b from RCEF for farmers subsidy in September

THE Department of Agriculture (DA) said it will download P20 billion from the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund (RCEF) for distribution to farmers in September 2024.

Agriculture Secretary Francsico

Tiu Laurel said the DA aimed to expedite the release of the funds, instead of the December 2024 schedule.

“Last year, P12 billion was released to farmers. This year, we intend to re-

lease the same amount,” he said during the pilot forum of the “Media Kapihan sa PCCI”. Farmers will receive P12 billion in cash subsidies, while P7 billion was earmarked for crop diversification

particularly supporting the pivot to cash crops. The remaining P1 billion would be allocated for land titling expenses of farmers.

The 2024 allocation came from the excess rice tariff collections in 2023 through the RCEF. Collection from rice tariffs reached P30 billion last year.

The RCEF, established under Republic Act 11203 or the Rice Tariffication Law, ushered in a shift from a quantitative restriction system on rice imports to a tariff-based system.

The law allocates P10 billion an-

nually from rice import tariffs for farm mechanization and input support, with any excess going towards financial assistance for small rice farmers.

The DA earlier revealed plans to extend RCEF by another six years to spread the benefits of the program to other farmers across the country.

The program is expected to expire by 2024 covering only 20 percent of rice farms nationwide, with around 26,412 units of various farm equipment distributed from mid-2020 to March 3, 2024.

Napocor inaugurates transmission line, new substation in Catanduanes

STATE-OWNED National Power Corporation (Napocor) said it inaugurated the San Miguel to Viga 69 kV transmission line, the 5 MVA Viga substation and the 30-kilowattpeak Palumbanes Island solar PV hybrid system in Catanduanes province. These projects would improve reliability and power dispatch in the island province and increase its renewable energy resources, it said.

Napocor vice president for Small Power Utilities Group (SPUG) Rene Barruela said the 23-circuit kilometer transmission line and the new substation would enhance the delivery of electricity in the northern part of Catanduanes

“Equipped with the latest technology, the Viga substation will significantly boost the grid’s capacity and pave the way for new power resources,” he said in a statement.

Napocor said the modernization of its transmission network and expansion of the substation capacities would strengthen the province’s resilience against power disruptions and accommodate future growth in energy demand.

Meanwhile, the 30 kWp Palumbanes Island solar PV-diesel hybrid system offers a sustainable energy solution for over 200 households in the off-grid area. The project also aims to lower the island’s dependence on diesel and gradually decrease fuel costs.

Napocor vice president for power engineering services Rogel Teves said the company’s renewable energy hybrid projects in the pipeline include Rapurapu in Albay, Palanan in Isabela, and Cuaming in Bohol.

“We aim to also inaugurate these facilities this year for the corporation to reap the benefits of sus-

tainable and clean energy solutions,” Teves said. Napocor, under Republic Act 9136 or the Electric Power Industry Reform Act of 2001, is mandated to bring electricity and associated power delivery systems to areas and communities not connected to the main grid. It operates 281 SPUG plants in the farthest islands and communities in the archipelago and manages the transmission systems of island provinces such as Palawan, Catanduanes, Masbate, Marinduque and Mindoro. NGCP seeks ERC nod to recover P88b from 2 projects

NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines asked the Energy Regulatory Commission to allow it to fully recover costs totaling over P87.7 billion for two recently-completed transmission projects.

NGCP spokesperson Cynthia PerezAlabanza said the recoveries for the projects were “very small.”

“How much will be spent and how much can be charged to consumers for that cost, for that facility, the ERC dictates that,” Alabanza said.

NGCP completed the MarivelesHermosa-San Jose transmission line project, which was filed with the Energy Regulatory Commission (ERC) at a project cost of P20.94 billion

The company also completed the P67.98-billion Cebu-Negros-Panay (CNP) 230-kiloVolt (kV) backbone transmission lines in April.

NGCP said it was only allowed to recover P176 million for the CNP project and P25.72 million for the MarivelesHSJ transmission project.

“With the completion of this critical project, NGCP is optimistic that the ERC will act on the overdue recoveries applied for by NGCP,” the company said earlier.

NGCP assured the public and its stakeholders that it would continue to deliver on its commitment to improve, expand, strengthen and reinforce the country’s power grid.

NGCP, the country’s transmission operator, completed around 98 projects since it took over the operations and maintenance of the transmission system in 2009.

The projects enabled the entry of 12,100 megawatts of additional power, while incoming projects would accommodate another 7,600 MW by 2028.

VW to invest $5b in venture with EV maker Rivian

and create a joint venture expected to produce technology used by both automakers, the companies announced Tuesday. The collaboration includes a direct $3 billion investment by the German company in Rivian as well as $2 billion to establish an equally controlled and owned joint venture “to create next-generation electrical architecture and best-in-class software technology,” the companies said in a news release.

PDIC to auction 37 residential, commercial lots

STATE-RUN Philippine Deposit In-

surance Corp. (PDIC) said it will hold an electronic public bidding to sell 37 residential and commercial lots to the public on its e-bidding portal next month.

The e-bidding will run from 9 a.m. on July 24 to 1 p.m. on July 25. The bids will be opened at 2 p.m. on July 25.

It said interested parties can browse through the PDIC’s e-bidding portal a complete list and description of the assets, requirements, e-bidding process and conditions of the bid.

The catalog of the properties for sale are closed bank assets sold on as-is-where-is basis, consisting of 20 residential lots with improvements, 11 vacant residential lots, two commercial lots with improvements, one commercial lot with improvements (bundled with a vacant residential lot), two mixed commercial-residential lots with improvements (one is bundled with a residential lot) and one vacant commercial lot.

PDIC said these assets are located in Metro Manila, Bataan, Bulacan, Cavite, Cebu, Iloilo, Laguna, Misamis Occidental, Negros Occidental, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, Quezon, Sultan Kudarat, Tarlac, Western Samar. Lot sizes range from 100 square meters to 7,535 sq. m.

on Tuesday and nearly 50 percent in after-hours trading following the deal’s announcement just after the end of the trading session.

Although praised for its technology, Rivian has been reporting losses and bleeding cash.

Under the transaction, VW will make an initial $1 billion investment in the US company in 2024 that will convert to Rivian common stock, to be followed by subsequent rounds in 2025 and 2026 of $1 billion each.

The additional $2 billion from VW is expected to be split between a payment at the start of the joint venture and a loan in 2026, the companies

said.

Besides boosting Rivian’s balance sheet, the deal represents a vote of confidence by VW in the California company’s platform that will improve the EV maker’s ability to win concessions from key suppliers, company officials said on a conference call with analysts.

“The transaction as a whole provides a powerful platform for future growth for Rivian,” said Chief Financial Officer Claire McDonough “And it’s not just the $2 billion of JV-related capital. It’s the full $5 billion of capital and the opportunity we have to accelerate our mission.” AFP

Filipino CEOs eye reforms for survival

PricewaterhouseCoopers International Limited (PwC) reveals a sense of urgency among

The 27th Annual Global CEO Survey says 54 percent of Philippine CEOs worry their companies might not survive in the next decade without significant changes.

Despite viability concerns, 97 percent of Philippine CEOs enacted significant changes to their value creation and delivery models in the past five years. About 86 percent implemented at least one major action with a substantial impact on their business model.

The lack of skilled workforce, technological limitations and competing operational priorities are cited as the biggest hurdles to reinvention.

PwC’s research emphasizes that successful companies focus not only on their business model, but also on the underlying operating and technology models that enable it. This requires a continuous improvement in mindset and significant leadership focus.

Philippine CEOs, however, are

LAND Bank of the Philippines said Wednesday it approved a P120-million loan to the municipal government of Tuburan in Basilan province to help it purchase various heavy equipment to speed-up construction and maintenance of farm-to-market roads and other crucial infrastructure projects.

The new equipment financed by the state-run lender will enhance the municipality’s road network and provide over 1,500 local farmers and fishers with improved access to agricultural technology and farm material inputs, plus reduced transportation costs for their produce.

Zed secures Bangko Sentral license to operate as credit card issuer in PH

ZED, a credit-led neobank, said Wednesday it received a certificate of authority to operate as a standalone credit card issuer from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP).

“Our BSP license makes us the first Philippine neobank to offer credit cards as a standalone issuer,” said cofounder and chief executive Danielle Cojuangco Abraham.

“This independence and our foundation as a technology company means we can rapidly and continuously improve our product, unconstrained by legacy systems,” she said.

After operating in a BSP-sanctioned pilot for the last 6 months, the Zed Card is rolling out to the public on an invite-only basis, starting with its waitlist. Zed said it saw overwhelming de-

mand for its no interest, no fees Mastercard Titanium Credit Card, garnering close to 40,000 sign-ups since launching its waitlist in March this year. Those who have signed up for the waitlist will receive invitations to apply for a Zed card over the coming months, it said. “We’re overwhelmed by the excitement for Zed and the number of signups we’ve received. Given the significant demand, it will take some time for us to open up spots for all 40,000 individuals on the waitlist. Rest assured, we’re already sending out invitations and will get to everyone that’s signed up. Our priority is onboarding new users at a pace where we can ensure a stellar experience for every Zed customer, so hang tight,” said Cojuangco Abraham.

Charlotte Conde signed the loan agreement on May 23, 2024 in Zamboanga City.

The loan will support the local government’s strategic investments in promoting economic growth especially in the town’s underserved communities.

“LandBank stands ready to serve the growth needs of partner local government units to bankroll initiatives that stimulate economic activities. This complements our efforts in support of the agriculture sector and other key industries contributing to building inclusive and sustainable local communities,” said LandBank president and chief executive Lynette Ortiz.

The LGU will use the loan to purchase 10-wheeler dump trucks, 10-wheeler mixer trucks, wheel loaders, a hydraulic crawler excavator and a 10-wheeler self-loading truck. This will help reduce operational costs associated with renting and subcontracting equipment for current and future construction projects across the town.

The municipal government said it requires logistics to maintain existing road networks and other infrastructure projects. The funding from LandBank will be crucial in addressing this need and advancing local growth, as Tuburan is an agricultural community with most of its land area dedicated to coconuts, rubber and cassava.

Steve Abraham and Danielle Cojuangco Abraham, co-founders of Zed welcome the certificate of authority given by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas to operate as a standalone credit card issuer.

cautiously optimistic for the next year. Over half or 57 percent expect global economic growth to improve, outpacing the Asia Pacific average. The US and China are seen as key to their 2024 growth prospects.

At least 60 percent of them anticipate workforce impacts within three years, along with positive outcomes for their businesses like increased revenue and profitability.

The survey says concerns remain about workforce upskilling, potential cybersecurity risks and the spread of misinformation.

Philippine CEOs are making strides on climate commitments. Three-quarters have taken steps to improve energy efficiency and innovate climatefriendly solutions. About 68 percent initiated measures to protect their assets and workforce from climate risks.

The Philippines is one of 105 countries surveyed, with 4,702 CEOs participating in PwC’s research.

of at least 12 years of age to plant a tree every year. By actively participating in this initiative, CFBCI and its partners contribute to fostering positive change for current and future generations.” the club said.

The collaborative effort highlighted the importance of environmental conservation and demonstrated the impact of publicprivate partnerships in addressing environmental challenges.

The La Mesa Watershed is a protected area that contains the last remaining rainforest of its size in Metro Manila surrounding the La Mesa Dam and its reservoir.

The area is supervised by the DENR and the Metropolitan Waterworks and Sewerage System.

THURSDAY,

TTouchbass Yugel Losorata

HE month of June is now associated with the pride of LGBTQIA+ community more than ever. This is welcoming for people who value equality and repels bigotry.

Just recently, a pride event in Quezon City got rained out. Online, some people were happy about it and even said mean things about the event, using the Bible to justify their words. This reminds me of a bandmate I had who used to make fun of gay people. I was young back then and didn’t know what to say, but now I realize it was wrong. Being religious doesn’t give anyone the right to be mean. Everyone deserves respect, no matter who they love.

On the bright side, the fact that there are more LGBT pride events these days means that the ‘straight’ has generally become more embracing. There will always be people misdefining the operative word pride as purely about being proud of what one is. The pride movement is on a deeper level about the fight for equal justice. We can say that queers have transformed into a dominating force in today’s pop culture, but as long as there is injustice being done to some who are not as empowered, then the pride parade must continue walking the talk.

In showbiz, LGBT individuals often thrive. I’ve met actors, directors, journalists, and others who are openly themselves or privately so. People’s character isn’t about sexual orientation. Don’t judge based on appearances or actions. Being nonjudgmental matters; steer clear of those complicating your life.

Understanding Pride Month is key. In 1969, amid major events like the moon landing, The Beatles’ final performance, Gloria Diaz winning Miss Universe, and the Tate-La Bianca murders, the Stonewall riots on June 28 marked a turning point for gay rights.

Thanks a lot partly to social media. While this point in history is less mentioned or talked about, the month when it took place had become adorned with colors that boldly spell pride.

Living in harmony requires understanding different perspectives. Simply silencing those who pretend to be righteous isn’t enough; everyone, regardless of their orientation, must behave respectfully.

The term “Baklang parlor” became derogatory due to some hairstylists gossiping inappropriately. I once felt violated in a salon where the stylist, speaking in gay lingo, made me uncomfortable. Fast forward to today’s woke era, it’s frustrating to see a gay celebrity displaying attitude instead of gratitude for fame. LGBT celebrities should stay humble, inspiring, and fair, avoiding jokes that insult others.

As an adult I came to appreciate the LGBT community more after I met many of them in the field who are well-mannered, brainy, and pure hearted.

I don’t agree when people have bashed a TV personality for implying she won’t dream of having a child who is not straight. She had a point because it’s not going be easy for a child. But such an idea is better off unsaid.

Simply put, the best thing a parent should do is accept a child for whoever he or she is. Every father-to-be wants a baby boy then ends up loving all his daughters like he never for once thought he wanted them born with a different gender.

As the month of June ends, we’re not guaranteed that better days are ahead for a community that keeps expressing themselves in the name of justice and respect. But there is always hope for people outside of the loop to change for the better, for the good of humanity regardless of gender and orientation. That is partly why there is a need for a Pride Month, to remind everyone that the march should go on and on.

On the Job on HBO GO

The neo-noir crime thriller On the Job, directed by Erik Matti, is chilling not only for its premise but also because it was allegedly inspired by a true story in the Philippine prison system. Written by Filipino-Japanese Michiko Yamamoto, this 2013 blockbuster tells the story of two prisoners who double as hitmen, temporarily freed to execute enemies of their client, military general Pacheco (Leo Martinez). The movie offers a dark and swift descent into human inhumanity, featuring Joel Torre (Mario) and Gerald Anderson (Daniel) as prisoners who accept their roles to support their families. Joey Marquez (Acosta) and Piolo Pascual (Coronel) star as law enforcement officers. Their lives intersect when the hitmen kill a drug lord and a woman named Linda. Linda’s husband reveals to Acosta that these killings were ordered by Pacheco, who is running for the Senate, and his congressman friend Manrique (Michael de Mesa).

The critically acclaimed film On the Job presents a tangled web of corruption and murder, culminating in a heartbreaking end.

“We are grateful sa lahat ng ating mga kaPuregold. This concert is our means of giving back and thanking them,” says Piedad. “We hope to see even more loyal members at the next ticketing events and at the concert itself.”

WHEN we talk about self-care, Vitamin C plays a pivotal role in one’s skincare routine as it provides a range of benefits for one’s skin such as brightening, smoothing wrinkles, boosting collagen, and many others.

Board-certified dermatologist Dr. Corie Rodas said that with the benefits of Vitamin C, everyone should try using it. However, some come to develop a sensitivity to it and often react to certain brands that contain it, sometimes causing a stinging feeling upon application.

Recognizing this need in the market, skincare brand QUICKFX recently launched its new Sen-C Bright range which includes products that give people with sensitive skin the benefits of Vitamin C but without having to deal with the stinging feeling, redness, and irritation.

What your bathroom habits say about your health

NATURE’S call is hard to deny, especially if it’s number two! This is why we know the malls and gasoline stations with the best comfort rooms—we need that reliable flush and bidet for the extra trip.

One can’t help but wonder: is my twice-a-day-or-more bathroom habit something to panic about?

Carlo M. Cornejo, MD, Section Chief of Gastroenterology in the top hospital in the Philippines Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed) says there’s no need to panic—just yet.

“First, there’s no absolute standard for how often one should poop. Most experts agree healthy bowel movement frequency can range from three times a day to three times a week, depending on the person,” says Dr. Cornejo. “Any changes to this frequency can be caused by several dietary and lifestyle factors.”

In fact, pooping more often might be a sign of a healthier body. One of the most common reasons for an increase in bowel movements is due to more fiber intake from vegetables like carrots, broccoli, and beets. Even exercising more causes frequent trips to the bathroom as it helps digestion and makes colon muscles contract more, which helps move stools regularly.

“Eating more fiber and working out are things doctors recommend

if a patient is constipated. In some cases, pooping more often should be welcomed,” adds Dr. Cornejo. Other causes for pooping more might just be simple lifestyle factors such as being stressed and frequently drinking coffee. “If you’re stressed out at work then neurotransmitters send signals from the brain to the gut, which may cause the gut to alter your digestion,” explains Dr. Cornejo. “It doesn’t help that many people cope with stress by turning to coffee. One extra cup is enough to cause more movement and muscle contraction in the intestines.”

So, when is pooping more a sign of a serious problem? MakatiMed says to watch out for discomforts like abdominal cramps and pain, bloody stool, and mucus in poop. You should also stay vigilant for possible accompanying symptoms like weight and hair loss. These could be signs of more serious underlying conditions ranging from gastroenteritis to Crohn’s disease.

“Pooping more frequently shouldn’t be anything more than a mild inconvenience at most. You should still be able to go through your daily life largely unaffected,” shares Dr. Cornejo. “As soon as there’s a sign of anything else going on, I highly recommend visiting your doctor before the problem gets worse.”
