PH initiates talks with China—DFA

Bilateral consultation in early July eyed

THE Philippines is eyeing talks with China to deescalate tensions following a violent clash last week between their sailors in the West Philippine Sea, Foreign Secretary Enrique Manalo said Tuesday.

"The DFA, in consultation with the National Maritime Council, we still believe in the primacy of dialogue, and diplomacy should prevail even in the face of these serious incidents, though I admit it's also a challenge," Manalo said during a Senate inquiry into the June 17 clash.

HOUSE Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez and Senate President Francis Escudero are confident in fulfilling the administration's legislative agenda during the 5th Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) meeting which took place in Malacañang on Tuesday. The meeting presided over by President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., Romualdez, and Escudero highlighted the House and Senate’s stance in addressing the nation's needs through timely legislation.

"Good experience, the conversation between Congress, House, and Senate was good as well as the executive... I have full hope and belief that we can do this," Escudero said. Romualdez noted the positive impact of the Senate's new leadership. “With the new leadership in the Senate, I am confident that we will be able to finish our legislative agenda,” he said.

PH’s ‘Pet Friendliest Mall’

In 2004, Eastwood City was recognized by no less than the Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) as the very first pet-friendly mall in the country.

A year after, the township pioneered the annual “Eastwood City Pet Blessing,” which gathers hundreds of pets of different kinds and sizes together with their owners to celebrate the genuine companionship that pets offer people. Last year, the township introduced the first-ever ‘Paw of Fame Award’ inspired by the Eastwood City Walk of Fame, where it feted the adorable celebrity Corgi ‘Dalbong’ with the one-of-a-kind recognition.

THE biggest vessel of China Coast Guard (CCG), dubbed "The Monster," was sighted near BRP Sierra Madre in Ayungin Shoal, the Armed Forces of the Philippines on Tuesday said.

In a statement, the AFP said the sighting of the 12,000-ton Chinese ship -- also the largest coast guard ship in the world -- was part of the claimant’s “broader pattern of intrusive patrol” aimed at asserting unlawful claims over the Philippines' exclusive economic zone (EEZ).

“The Armed Forces of the Philippines closely monitors all activities in the West Philippine Sea as part of our commitment to maritime domain awareness and the protection of our territorial integrity, sovereignty, and sovereign rights."

The CCG vessel was sighted on Monday near the Philippine naval post in Ayungin Shoal.

“As of 9:00am, the 12,000-ton CCG vessel passed close to the Philippines’ naval post and was heading north,” maritime security expert Ray Powell said.

The sighting of The Monster came after the June 17 ramming incident in the area between the Philippine

House invites Rody, Bato to EJK hearing

THE House of Representatives Committee on Human Rights has decided to invite former President Rodrigo Duterte and Sen. Ronald "Bato" dela Rosa to attend its next hearing on the alleged extrajudicial killings (EJK) linked to the previous administration’s drug war.

The hearing is scheduled for Wednesday, June 26.

During the third hearing on Tuesday, committee chair Manila third district Rep. Bienvenido Abante Jr. suggested inviting Duterte and Dela Rosa to listen to the testimonies of the victims' families.

“We have informed the former president of this hearing so he knows,” Abante said.

"For the fourth hearing, I will be inviting Sen. Bato dela Rosa and the former president to come and listen to your testimony," he added.

The decision came after a discussion where Abante asked National Union of People’s LawyersNational Capital Region secretary general Kristina Conti and Rubilyn Litao from Rise Up for Life and for

Rights about their belief in the former president’s responsibility for the killings.

"We believe that because of former President Duterte's policy of war on drugs, many murders have occurred," Litao said in Filipino. Conti and Litao have been assisting hundreds of families of EJK victims, some of whom were present during the hearing to share their harrowing experiences.

Gabriela Rep. Arlene Brosas made a motion to invite Duterte and Dela Rosa, which was seconded by ACT Teachers Rep. France Castro. The motion was approved without objections.

The inquiry aims to address the alleged human rights violations during Duterte’s drug war, which has been widely condemned.

Use prayers as weapon vs. China might, says Archbishop

THE Catholic church has urged the Filipino faithful to pray the rosary as a “special weapon” against China’s aggression in the West Philippine Sea.

In a pastoral letter, Archbishop Socrates Villegas of Lingayen-Dagupan urged Catholics to engage in a “Rosary Campaign” from June 27 to the Solemnity of the Assumption on August 15.

Calling China a “threat”, the prelate expressed concern over China’s increasing assertive actions in the disputed territories, saying China shows no fear and no hesitation “in inching menacingly close to the Philippines.”

Villegas also encouraged acts of penance and supererogation “with particular intensity” during this period.

“We emphasize that such actions by the CCG are illegal, coercive, and contrary to the spirit of maintaining peace and stability in the region,” the AFP said.

“Our forces will continue to monitor and report any developments in the WPS in the performance of our mandate. We call on all nations to respect international law and to refrain from actions that escalate tensions in the WPS," the military added.

“May the power of the rosary preserve our nation’s faith and freedom.

May the power of the rosary crush the serpent’s head! May the power of the rosary drive away Satan’s power from our shores,” Villegas said.

The archbishop invites Catholics not just in his archdiocese but throughout the country to join in the prayer activity.

“May God be honored by all that we do for our country, our people and their future; for our faith and our Church, for the freedom to believe and the freedom to worship as we believe,” Villegas added.

He lamented China’s encroachment on Philippine maritime zones, displacement of fishermen, and environmental degradation by building islands and militarized structures.

The Philippine Navy also reported 5 People’s Liberation Army Navy (PLAN vessels around Bajo de Masinloc (1) and Ayungin Shoal (4) during the same period.

The presence of some 110 Chinese maritime militia vessels was also recorded.

In May, "The Monster" -- with bow number 5901 -- also conducted an "intrusive patrol" in Scarborough Shoal, Philippine Navy spokesperson for the West Philippine Sea Commodore Roy Vincent Trinidad said.

as Beijing steps up efforts to push its claims to nearly all of the strategically located waterway.

Manila hopes to convene the Philippines-China Bilateral Consultation Mechanism on the South China Sea in early July "specifically to discuss the recent incidents," Manalo said.

A Filipino soldier lost a finger in the clash, with Manila also accusing the Chinese coast guard of looting guns and damaging three boats as well as navigational and communication equipment.

Beijing insisted its coast guard behaved in a "professional and restrained" way and blamed Manila for the clash.

In previous confrontations, Chinese forces have used water cannon and military-grade lasers and collided with Filipino resupply vessels and their escorts.

The two countries launched the consultative mechanism in 2017 to promote the peaceful management of conflicts in the South China Sea.

Manalo said the proposed July meeting will look to establish "confidencebuilding measures" that can create the basis for "more serious discussions."

However, Manalo said the discussions will not be at the expense of the country's sovereignty.

The House approved all 20 priority LEDAC measures by March, three months ahead of the June 2024 target. Of these, three have been enacted into law, including the Philippine Ecosystem and Natural Capital Accounting System Act.

Additionally, three measures are undergoing the enrollment process, four are under bicameral conference committee deliberation, and ten have been approved on the third and final reading.

The measures under bicameral deliberation include the Philippine Defense Industry Development Act and the VAT on Digital Transactions Act. The ten other LEDAC priority bills approved by the House include the E-Governance Act and the Military and Uniformed Personnel Pension Reform Bill.

As of June 25, 2024, LEDAC had identified 59 priority measures, with 13 already enacted into law. These include the SIM Registration Act, the Postponement of Barangay/SK Elections, and the New Agrarian Emancipation Act.

Romualdez committed to passing the remaining three of the 28 bills identified by the Legislative Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC) for approval before the conclusion of the 19th Congress next year.

“Most of the bills (25) are already in their final stages and approved by the House of Representatives. We are committed to approving the remaining three of the twenty-eight measures named during our LEDAC meeting with President Bongbong Marcos, Senate President Chiz Escudero, and other officials. These legislative measures are crucial to the country's development agenda,” the Speaker said.

the Filipino people that while we are seeking the approach for peaceful resolutions through international law and diplomacy, we are not blind to the incidents that are happening,” Manalo said.

“We want to ensure that confidencebuilding measures will be achieved, not at the expense of our sovereignty, sovereign rights, as well as our rights and jurisdiction on the West Philippine Sea."

Manila and Beijing convened a working group last week to prepare for the meeting, Manalo said.

Following the clash, Manalo said his office had approached China's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and embassy in the country.

"We sternly communicated to our counterparts that (it) was really incomprehensible how the delivery of basic necessities to our troops... could be considered a provocation that would justify an increased level of Chinese actions," he said.

Beijing claims almost the entirety of the South China Sea, brushing aside competing claims from several Southeast Asian nations, including the Philippines, and an international ruling that its stance has no legal basis.

Ombudsman junks Guo petition

THE Office of the Ombudsman has affirmed the six-month preventive suspension of Bamban, Tarlac mayor Alice Guo and two other local officials, citing sufficient grounds to hold that the evidence against them are strong.

In his June 18 order, Ombudsman Samuel Martires rejected the motion for reconsideration filed by Guo, Business Permit and Licensing Office chief Edwin Ocampo and municipal legal officer Adenn Sigua.

"This Office only deems it prudent to preventively suspend respondents Guo, Campo and Sigua given their undeniable hand in the operation of Baofu and Zun Yuan," his resolution read.

"After due consideration of the factual circumstances of the instant case, this Office finds no compelling reason to reconsider and lift the Order of preventive suspension of respondents Guo, Campo and Sigua while the case against them is pending adjudication," it stated.

Last May, the Ombudsman suspended the three officials following a complaint filed by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) accusing them of grave misconduct, serious dishonesty, gross neglect of duty, and conduct prejudicial to the best interest of the service.

The Ombudsman maintained there is evidence that Guo has a business interest in Baofu Land Development Inc., owner of the land where the raided POGO is located.

MIAA says no drones allowed on airports

THE Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) has issued a reminder to the public to avoid flying drones near Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA), as this can disrupt flight schedules and ground operations.

This reminder comes after recent reports of unauthorized drone activities within the 10-kilometer aerodrome radius of the airport.

The airport management emphasized the potential safety risks posed by drones, including damage to aircraft, emergency landings due to drone interference, and the risk of lost visual contact with the aircraft. Authorities also noted that drones can cause more structural damage than birds when they collide with an airplane.

MIAA records showed that there were 10 recorded sightings of unlicensed drone operations in 2023 and four others in the first quarter of 2024. Airport general manager Eric Jose Ines advised all drone operators to be aware of and comply with the restrictions set by the Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP). Joel E. Zurbano

UP Diliman ends reading breaks for students

THE University of the Philippines (UP) Diliman announced on Tuesday it will stop implementing its ‘reading break’ policy following the release of its calendar for academic year (A.Y.) 2024-2025.

The University Board of Regents approved the new schedule last Friday, June 21, marking the end of the pandemic-era setup it organized to provide a period of rest and recovery for students and faculty during the semester.

“The reading break was first introduced during the first fully-remote semester in 2020 ‘to support faculty and student wellness,’” according to Tinig ng Plaridel, the official student publication of the UP College of Mass Communication, as posted on its Facebook page.

“Meanwhile, classes for A.Y. 20242025 will start on Aug. 20. The registration period will be from Aug. 14 to 16, almost a week after the final examination period for the midyear term of the current school year,” it added. With Rolando Ng III

Lawmakers want 24/7 work on infra projects

A GROUP of lawmakers are supporting the congressional approval of a measure mandating ‘round-theclock’ work in government infrastructure projects.

The solons led by Rep. Brian Raymund Yamsuan said House Bill (HB) 9666 once enacted shall promote efficiency in implementing infrastructure projects and minimize the inconvenience to, as well as the time and productivity lost by, commuters and motorists.

“In other countries, it is expected that the repair and construction of roads and bridges are done 24/7. Like what I have always been espousing, we should change our mindset and our previous ways,” said Yamsuan. Maricel V. Cruz

BI back strict rules on Chinese visas

THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) has welcomed strict measures implemented by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) in issuing entry visas to Chinese nationals, following the surge of Chinese coming to the country as tourists but turned out to be illegally working in Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGOs).

“We welcome this update as it adds another strong layer of protection against foreigners who might attempt to exploit the visa system,” BI Chief Norman Tansingco said. In February last year, the BI has implemented a major overhaul of its sys-

tems by deactivating its port operations division. The BI has likewise recently introduced online applications for tourist visa extensions and other essential BI services. The bureau has also initiated integrated systems with numerous govern-

ment agencies such as the Department of Migrant Workers, the Department of Labor and Employment, and the Commission on Filipinos Overseas, among others, to make verifications seamless and eliminate opportunities for corruption by automating processes.

The BI said that on June 13, the DFA announced that Chinese nationals applying for temporary visitor’s visas at Philippine foreign service posts will now be required to submit their Chinese Social Insurance Record Certificates.

The move, according to the DFA, was made following “headline discovery of fraudulently-obtained passports and visas resulting in the illicit

entry and overstay” of foreigners in the Philippines.

Tansingco said that the tightening of isa requirements is a welcome development and will add another strong layer of defense against illegal aliens attempting to abuse the country’s visa system.

In 2023, the BI denied the entry of 3,359 foreign nationals, with 61% of which were tagged as likely to become a public charge.

“We welcome this move to have a stronger pre-vetting action as both agencies work hand-in-hand to protect against the entry of undesirable aliens,” he added.

Solon says DBM execs may face contempt raps

‘10 Taguig brgys formerly under Makati can’t vote for congressman’

RESIDENTS of the 10 barangays formerly under Makati City and now part of Taguig City will not be able to vote for a congressman in the coming May 2025 national and local elections, according to the Commission on Elec-

tions (Comelec). However, they can all still vote for mayor, vice mayor, and city council in the coming.

Comelec chairman George Erwin Garcia said affected voters are from barangays Pembo, Comembo, Cembo, South Cembo, West Rembo, East Rembo, Pito-

go, Rizal, Northside, and Southside.

He explained there is no law yet that states a new district is created there in Taguig.

“At the same time, the Comelec cannot include our countrymen in the 10 barangays in one district because the result of that will be changing the existing law that we have,” Garcia said.

“We cannot abolish the second district of Makati, so even if only three barangays remain there, it will still be a district. These three remaining barangays in the second district of Makati City—Guadalupe Viejo, Guadalupe Nuevo, and Pinagkaisahan, will not be abolished,” he added.

A “show-cause” order has been issued by a subcommittee of the House Appropriations Committee conducting an inquiry into the Pharmally controversy against against former PS-DBM chief Lloyd Christopher Lao, lawyer Warren Rex Liong, a former Overall Deputy Ombudsman, and other ex-officials of the PS-DBM. Lanao del Sur Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong, one of the young lawmakers in the House of Representatives, said the presence of these former officials is paramount to the oversight functions of the House panel in the exercise of its mandate.

“For a guest speaker whose presence is very vital, very important in the conclusion of this certain inquiry, without giving justification as to his absence, I think we can request a show-cause order,” Adiong said.

Plans for damaged Navotas River eyed

THE Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), the Department of Public Works and Highways, and local government units are collaborating on strategies to address the damaged navigational gate of the MalabonNavotas River.

On June 7, a barge forcefully entered the channel from the sea, causing damage to the navigation gate in Barangay Tanza Uno in Navotas City. Currently, the local governments of Navotas and Malabon are working to mitigate the effects of flooding in some areas of their cities.

Several barangays in Malabon are experiencing flooding, especially during high tides, due to the

malfunctioning gate. Malabon Mayor Jeannie Sandoval reported that flooded areas include Barangays Hulong Duhat and Dampalit, as well as Tañong and Concepcion, with some residents experiencing 2-meter-high floods.

Sandoval is hoping for an immediate solution and the need to plan for a long-term fix, as well as discussing financing options for the longterm solution.

“What we need to discuss is how to finance the long term solution,” she said.

In Navotas, residents of Barangay Tanza are also experiencing flooding, and the local government is currently placing sandbags in low-lying areas as a short-term solution.

ECOP eyes P15-daily wage hike

EMPLOYERS are willing to increase the minimum daily wage by P15, recognizing the current inflation rate and the need to help workers cope with the increasing cost of living.

Employers Confederation of the Philippines (ECOP) president Sergio OrtizLuis acknowledged the impact of inflation on the workers’ purchasing power, but cautioned against a one-size-fits-all approach.

“What I see with the computation is about P15-peso increase. That is what most employers are inclined to part. Davao wage rate recently moved. I guess we’re seeing another movement for Metro Manila by July,” Ortiz-Luis

said at the sidelines of the opening of the two-day 45th National Conference of Employers held at the Manila Hotel Tuesday.

He added that the employers association is “not expecting anything more on legislated wage hike this year.”

The group cited the role of Regional Tripartite Wages and Productivity Boards (RTWPBs) in determining increases for specific regional situations.

Ortiz-Luis underscored the need for stable wage rates to encourage investments and business growth. He believed this will create a more sustain-

able environment for job creation in the long run.

In Metro Manila, the minimum daily wage is P610 for non-agricultural workers. For workers in agriculture, service/retail establishments with 15 or fewer employees, and manufacturing establishments with less than 10 employees, the minimum daily wage is P573.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) recently held a public hearing with the RTWPB-National Capital Region (NCR) on a possible increase in the minimum wage.

Three-nation maritime exercise in full swing in Eastern Visayas

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG), the Directorate General for Sea Transportation (DGST) of the Republic of Indonesia, and the Japan Coast Guard (JCG) on Monday , June 24, launched their four-day Regional Marine Pollution Exercise (MARPOLEX) 2024 at BREDCO Port, Bacolod City, Negros Occidental.

Leading the arrival ceremony earlier were PCG District Western Visayas chief Capt. Weneil Azcuna who is also

skipper of BRP Gabriela Silang, Capt. Lawrence Roque, KN TRISULA P111 commanding officer, Capt. Satria Aji Yudha of DGST, and PLH 02 TSUGARU head Capt. Mori Naoki (JCG).

The three coast guards will conduct joint maritime exercises on search and rescue, firefighting, oil spill and equipment recovery operations, as well as damage assessment.

Prior to these exercises, the commanding officers and members of the

oil spill response team will determine the position of the vessels and other assets to ensure safe speed and distance through a comprehensive table top exercise.

The biennial MARPOLEX implements the 1981 Sulawesi Sea Oil Spill Response Network Plan Agreement.

This year’s MARPOLEX is the 23rd conduct of such maritime exercise since its establishment in 1986.

The PCG and the DGST maintain a

strong fraternal agreement that promotes multilateral cooperation toward addressing major oil spills in the Asian region. Meanwhile, the JCG supports the initiative that enhances the Philippines and Indonesia’s operational readiness and capability for oil spill incidents, making the Regional MARPOLEX 2024 an opportunity to share knowledge and latest techniques in maritime safety and marine environmental protection.

PBBM reaffirms objective of modern maritime sector

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to a modern, future-ready maritime industry, coinciding with this year’s global celebration of the Day of the Seafarer.

“Let me reiterate the full support of this administration as we strive to reach our goal of having a modern and future-ready maritime industry” the President said in a social media message.

The Chief Executive cited the Maritime Industry Authority (MARINA) for promoting a skilled maritime workforce and adopting efficient governance systems.

“I laud the MARINA for complying with international standards and keeping at par with other nations when it comes to this specialized industry. This year’s theme is a clarion call for us to share the best practices that help make the maritime sector a better, safer, and more fulfilling workforce for our seafarers,” he said.

Mr. Marcos also gave assurance that his administration would continue to advance the maritime industry and support Filipino seafarers.

“With grateful hearts, we celebrate the many achievements and contributions of our Filipino merchant fleet as we celebrate the Day of the Seafarer for this year,” he stated.

The Philippines is one of the world’s leading suppliers of seafarers, with approximately 400,000 Filipino seamen deployed on international vessels worldwide.

US Sinovac psyops, Ritter wake-upper

TWO events the past week shook the Philippines’ information, political and security milieu.

The first was the June 14 publication of the Reuters’ report exposing US. military psyops titled “Pentagon ran secret antivax campaign to undermine China during pandemic” creating mass vaccine hesitancy that certainly contributed to massive 4.4 million infections and 66,864 COVID deaths in the Philippines so far.

Some 300 fake accounts on Twitter, now X, matching descriptions identified by ex-US military officials associated with the Philippines operation were created carrying the slogan #Chinaangvirus, according to Reuters, and graphics with China’s red flag, vaccine vials with Sinovac and Duterte in various ugly faces posted with messages like “COVID came from China and the VACCINE also came from China, don’t trust China!”

The anti-China, anti-Sinovac, antiDuterte black propaganda of the Pentagon linked up with the usual US-proxy politicians in the Philippine Senate, one of them was Senator Drilon who questioned the “insistence on Sinovac” and Risa Hontiveros who protested Sinovac use on seniors.

US military website Military.com says, “Pentagon Stands by Secret Anti-Vaccination Disinformation Campaign in Philippines After Reuters Report” ordered by Trump’s defense secretary Mark Esper “to discredit China’s Sinovac inoculation – payback for Beijing’s efforts to blame Washington for the pandemic...”

I think the real reason is to cover up US COVID-19 development by Dr. Baric and experiments at US. laboratories in Ft. Detrick, Virginia, and released at Wuhan by a US military team.

This bombshell Reuters’ report should shake every Filipino, especially the proUS and anti-China Filipinos to re-examine their dependence and susceptibility to US media reports on crucial issue, from COVID-19 to today, more specifically, the South China Sea news and developments where a blatantly open US psywar operations dubbed “Project Myoushu” by its US creator, ex-USAF Col. Raymond Powell, and given to US proxies in the Philippine government to implement.

Project Myoushu is aimed by Powell to “exact a reputational cost on China” by pushing the Philippines to break agreed protocols between the Philippines and China on Rotation and Resupply missions to BRP Sierra Madre, and cooperative terms of engagements in other parts of the disputed areas to invite blockading

or water cannon interception and accuse the CCG of “bullying” and “aggressive tactics.”

On the positive side of the two international news and information events is the Schiller Institute Emergency Press Conference “The Danger of Nuclear War is Real, and Must be Stopped” last June 12, 1:00 am, to 3:00 am Manila time.

Panel speakers were ex-US Marine Intelligence and UN Weapons Inspector Major Scott Ritter, ex-US Army colonels Richard Black and Col. Lawrence Wilkerson.

All speakers warned the Philippines of the danger it faces if it continues to serve as a US proxy.

We all know that the United States is a war-monger that wants war to maintain its hegemony in the world!

Particularly strong words of caring advice to Filipinos came from Major Scott Ritter in his 791 words impromptu statement which I can quote only key portions:

“... I have a warm spot in my heart for the Philippines. Let’s build upon what Colonel Wilkerson had said earlier.

“The United States is incapable of fighting a sustained conflict against a peer-level force. The United States cannot fight and engage China and win.

“We will not beat the Chinese. We cannot beat the Chinese... we know this, and yet we’re using the Philippines to create the conditions of potential conflict with the Chinese.

“Please understand that for the Filipino people, this is a recipe for disaster. You think America is your friend. So too did the Ukrainian people, and they are dying by the hundreds of thousands.

“Friends don’t let friends die in those quantities... America has never been the friend of Ukrainians, and we are not the friends of the Filipinos....

“You are a tool, nothing but a tool. And when the tool ceases to be useful, we will discard you... China is not your enemy.

China is your neighbor. China is your friend. China doesn’t want war...”

And we all know that the United States is a war-monger that wants war to maintain its hegemony in the world!

Investment surge

THE good news on the economic front is the Marcos Jr. administration is making good progress in attracting more foreign direct investments to our shores.

Long-term capital flows into the Philippines surged by more than a fifth in March, growing for the third consecutive month this year as investments from foreign companies in debt instruments swelled and drove the increase.

Data recently released by the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas showed net FDIs grew 23.1 percent to $686 million from $557 million in March 2023.

The March portfolio brought the cumulative FDI net inflows to $3 billion during the first quarter of the year, marking a 42-percent growth from the $2.1 billion recorded in the same period in 2023.

The BSP attributed the FDI increase to the country’s strong growth prospects and efforts to moderate inflation.

Chief Economist Michael Ricafort of Rizal Commercial Banking Corporation has pointed to improved economic and financial markets performance in recent months for the country’s economic growth, which he said is among the fastest in the ASEAN region.

He also cited favorable demographics and lower long-term interest rates and borrowing costs that helped boost investments globally.

The positive outlook for the domestic economy in the coming years is shared by HSBC Global Research, which said the country is likely to attract FDIs amid reforms that improved the country’s business climate.

“Thanks to the country’s robust reform narrative, FDI sentiment in the Philippines

Mitigating climate change

CLIMATOLOGISTS and other experts are saying the effects of global warming are already bringing harm to human communities and the natural world.

They add further temperature rises will have a devastating impact and more action on greenhouse gas emissions is urgently required.

Given that multiple factors contribute to climate change, multiple actions are therefore required to address climate change, which refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns.

These shifts may be natural, but since the 1800s, experts say human activities have been the main driver of this significant variation of average weather conditions primarily due to the burning of fossil fuels (like coal, oil and gas), which produces heat-trapping gases.

And the number of people on our planet is one of those factors. Every additional person increases carbon emissions – the rich far more than the poor – and increases the number of climate change victims – the poor far more

than the rich, according to experts. They add that worldwide Gross Domestic Product per capita and population growth remained the strongest drivers of CO2 emissions from fossil fuel combustion in the last decade.

Population growth affects the Earth’s ability to withstand climate change and absorb emissions, like through deforestation as land is converted for agricultural use to feed a growing human population.

Weather chasers say climate change is already shrinking glaciers and ice caps, altering the availability of fresh water

Demographers say we are currently adding more than 80 million people a year to our 8.019 billion -- an increase of 75,162,541 or 0.95 percent) from New Year’s Day 2023 – global population.

From January 2024, 4.3 births and 2.0 deaths were expected worldwide

HOUSE House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has returned from Tokyo with more than just diplomatic pleasantries: he came home with a landmark moment for bilateral relations.

He has secured a pivotal commitment from Japan to hire more Filipino workers, particularly in sectors critical to Japan’s aging society, like elderly care.

This development is not just a feather in Romualdez’s cap but a profound statement on the value and potential of Filipino labor in the global workforce.

Strategic alliance

During his talks with Japan’s top officials, including Speaker Nukaga Fukushiro and Vice Speaker Kaieda Banri, Romualdez’s agenda was clear: to reinforce the ties that bind the Philippines and Japan.

Kaieda’s acknowledgment of Japan’s demographic crisis, coupled with his appreciation for Filipino workers, underscores the critical role these workers play in sustaining Japan’s economy.

“Japan is facing a decrease in population, and in this regard, Japan truly appreciates the Filipinos working here, especially elderly care workers,” Kaieda stated, highlighting the indispensable contribution of Filipinos to Japan’s social infrastructure.

is bound to improve in the years ahead and the general pessimism regarding the country’s FDI competitiveness ought to turn for the better,” it said. But the research group also said the country should first address structural and institutional challenges, which may prompt some investors to look elsewhere in the Southeast Asian region.

The key to attracting more foreign investments in the years ahead is to create a businessfriendly environment that promotes growth, innovation, and sustainability

What the Marcos Jr. administration has going for it is that it benefits from several laws passed to attract investments into the country.

These include the Ease of Doing Business Law, which was passed in 2017 to cut red tape and streamline government process, and the CREATE law, passed in 2021 to introduce a more competitive selection of tax incentives.

Other liberalization reforms enacted over the last two years, namely the For-

This commitment is more than a diplomatic gesture; it is a recognition of the indispensable value that Filipino workers bring to Japan.

With an aging population and a declining birthrate, Japan’s need for skilled workers in sectors like healthcare and caregiving has never been more urgent.

The agreement to welcome more Filipino workers is not merely a stopgap but a sustainable solution to Japan’s demographic challenges.

Win for both nations

This development is a testament to the deepening relationship between the two nations, poised to celebrate 70 years of diplomatic ties in 2026.

Romualdez’s remarks on this being a prelude to the celebration encapsulate the optimism and mutual respect that define

Act, indicate the business climate in the Philippines is moving in the right direction.

Despite challenges, the Philippines has built a robust and credible reform narrative that may continue to attract foreign investments.

But the country needs to improve in some areas, even as the past five years have shown the economy is pointed in the right direction.

From where we sit, we think in order to attract more foreign investments, the government should focus on implementing several key strategies.

First, improve infrastructure. We should prioritize infrastructure development to improve transportation, communication, and energy networks.

every second.

The UN projects without further action to address population growth, there will be two billion more people by 2050, and three-and-a-half billion more by 2100.

Warming of our atmosphere – whose effects will depend on how high and how fast the temperature rises – is now impossible to avoid, authorities say.

Global warming changes temperature patterns, causing severe weather events, heatwaves, droughts and floods.

Weather chasers say climate change is already shrinking glaciers and ice caps, altering the availability of fresh water.

This contributes to ocean acidification, destroying coral reefs and other aquatic ecosystems.

It makes places uninhabitable for some plants and animals, leading to extinctions and redistribution of species, threatening food production with alien pests and diseases.

We have seen bushfires, vegetation fires and floods in different countries while impacts on agriculture like through soil degradation and unseasonal weather are leading to unpredictable and unstable crop yields which experts argue are dangerous for the poorest populations.

Japan to welcome more Filipino workers

this partnership. The cooperation extends beyond workforce recruitment.

It encompasses economic, defense, and cultural exchanges, laying a robust foundation for future collaboration.

Japan’s pledge to assist the Philippine economy, with over 1,400 Japanese companies operating in Southeast Asia, further underscores this commitment.

The presence of Filipinos in regions like Ibaraki Prefecture, with over 7,000 workers, speaks volumes about the deep-rooted ties and the community’s integration into Japanese society.

This development is a beacon of hope -- a shining example of what can be achieved when nations come together in the spirit of mutual respect and shared goals

As Nukaga Fukushiro noted, “I will continue to cooperate with the Philippines to help uplift the Philippine economy.”

This statement is not just about economics; it’s about shared growth and mutual prosperity.

The value of Filipino workers

Globally, Filipino workers have earned a reputation for their dedication, skills, and resilience.

Testimonies from Japanese employers and those from other countries highlight the profound impact of Filipino workers.

One Japanese employer recently remarked, “Filipino workers bring not just skills but a spirit of service and dedication that is unparalleled. They are indispensable to our workforce.”

This sentiment is echoed globally. From healthcare in the Middle East to

This will not only attract foreign investors but also create better opportunities for businesses to prosper.

Second, strengthen economic policies. We should create a more conducive business environment by implementing policies that promote transparency, efficiency, and predictability.

This will give foreign investors the confidence to invest in the country.

Third, enhance ease of doing business. We should streamline regulatory procedures, reduce red tape, and simplify business registration processes.

This will make it easier for foreign investors to set up and operate their businesses here.

Fourth, invest in human capital.

We should invest in education and training programs to develop a skilled workforce that can meet the needs of for-

hospitality in the United States, Filipino workers are renowned for their hard work and integrity.

Their contribution is not just economic but cultural, enriching communities and fostering international goodwill.

Pathway to a brighter future As Japan prepares to welcome more Filipino workers, the implications are profound.

This development promises not only economic benefits but also the strengthening of cultural ties and mutual understanding.

It is a clear signal both nations are committed to building bridges of cooperation that transcend borders.

Romualdez’s success in securing this commitment is a reminder of the power of diplomacy and the importance of nurturing relationships. His efforts have ensured more Filipinos will have opportunities to contribute to Japan’s growth while enhancing their own prospects back home.

This move not only addresses Japan’s demographic challenges but also provides a lifeline for countless Filipino families, offering them hope and a chance for a better life.

Call to celebrate, continue the journey

As we await the concrete steps to implement this agreement, let us celebrate this significant milestone.

The commitment by Japan to hire more Filipinos is not just a diplomatic triumph; it is a testament to the enduring spirit of cooperation and friendship between the Philippines and Japan.

It is a moment of triumph for Romualdez, for the Filipino workers, and for the shared future of both nations.

In a world often divided by conflicts and challenges, this development is a beacon of hope – a shining example of what can be achieved when nations come together in the spirit of mutual respect and shared goals.

Here’s to a future where Filipino workers continue to thrive, contributing to the global community while uplifting their homeland.

eign as well as domestic investors. A well-trained workforce will not only attract more investments but also drive economic growth in the country.

Fifth, promote industry clusters.

We should focus on developing industry clusters in key sectors such as manufacturing, technology, and tourism.

This will create a more collaborative environment for businesses and attract more foreign investments.

Overall, the key to attracting more foreign investments in the years ahead is to create a business-friendly environment that promotes growth, innovation, and sustainability.

By implementing these strategies, the government can very well attract more foreign investors and stimulate economic development in the country in the years ahead. (Email: ernhil@yahoo.com)

BANGKOK – Julian Assange has been released from prison and left Britain, WikiLeaks said, as he reached a landmark plea deal with US authorities that brought an end to his years-long legal drama.

“Julian Assange is free,” WikiLeaks wrote on X of its founder, who had been detained in Britain for five years as he fought extradition to the United States which sought to prosecute him for revealing military secrets. He has agreed to plead guilty to a single count of conspiracy to obtain and disseminate national defence information, accord-

ing to a document filed in court in the Northern Mariana Islands in the Pacific.

A charter plane flew Assange, 52, from London to Bangkok, where it had been scheduled to stop for refueling.

AFP journalists saw it touch down at Bangkok’s Don Mueang airport at around 12:30 pm.

From there it is scheduled to fly to Saipan, capital of the US territory where Assange will appear in court on Wednesday morning.

Assange is expected to be sentenced to five years and two months in prison, with credit for the same amount of time spent

behind bars in Britain.

This means he could return to his native Australia, where the government said his case had “dragged on for too long” and there was “nothing to be gained by his continued incarceration.”

The publisher was wanted by Washington for publishing hundreds of thousands of secret US documents from 2010 as head of the whistleblowing website WikiLeaks.

Since then Assange became a hero to free speech campaigners and a villain to those who thought he endangered US security and intelligence sources. AFP

Blinken “underscored the importance of avoiding further escalation of the conflict and reaching a diplomatic resolution that allows both Israeli and Lebanese families to return to their homes,” spokesman Matthew Miller said after the meeting in Washington with Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.

There has been daily cross-border fire between Israel and Lebanon’s Hezbollah since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on Oct. 7, with fears growing in recent weeks that it could turn into another major front.

In the latest fighting, Iran-backed Hezbollah on Monday said it targeted three Israeli military sites over the border. Israel’s military said its warplanes hit militant infrastructure in the Baalbek area of eastern Lebanon.

Thousands of Lebanese and Israeli civilians from the border areas of their respective nations have been forced to seek refuge away from the fighting in recent months.

“A war must happen to push Hezbollah away from the border,” said Helene Abergel, a 49-year-old resident displaced from the Israeli border town of Kiryat Shmona.

In Gaza, Israeli strikes have destroyed much of the territory’s infrastructure and left residents struggling to survive. AFP

Probers comb wreckage after lithium factory fire kills 23

SEOUL -- Investigators combed the charred wreckage of a South Korean lithium factory Tuesday to find the cause of a massive blaze that killed 23 in one of the country’s worst factory disasters in years. The fire department said 23 people are now confirmed dead, including 17 Chinese nationals -- one fewer than their initial figure of 18, with identification work ongoing.

“We plan to confirm the victims’ identities by collecting DNA from their bodies,” firefighter Kim Jin-young told reporters.

BEIJING -- A Chinese probe carrying samples from the far side of the Moon returned to Earth on Tuesday, capping a technically complex 53-day mission heralded as a world first.

The landing module of the Chang’e-6 spacecraft touched down at a predetermined site in Inner Mongolia at 2:07 pm, the China National Space Administration said, hailing the mission a “complete success”.

It comes bearing soil and rocks from the side of the Moon facing away from Earth, a poorly understood region that scientists say holds great research promise because its rugged features are less smoothed over by ancient lava flows than the near side.

That means the materials harvested there may help us to better understand how the Moon formed and how it has evolved over time.

China’s space agency said the probe was “functioning normally, signaling that the Chang’e-6 lunar exploration mission was a complete success”.

President Xi Jinping said in a congratulatory message that the “outstanding contributions”

of the mission command “will be remembered forever by the motherland and the people”, state broadcaster CCTV reported.

Chang’e-6 blasted off from a space center on the island province of Hainan on May 3 and descended into the Moon’s immense South PoleAitken Basin almost exactly a month later.

It used a drill and robotic arm to scoop up samples, snapped some shots of the pockmarked surface and planted a Chinese flag made from basalt in the grey soil.

On June 4, the probe made the first ever successful launch from the far side in what Xinhua called “an unprecedented feat in human lunar exploration history.”

China’s burgeoning space exploits are a point of pride for the government, and state media outlets launched rolling coverage of the imminent landing on Tuesday morning.

Live images of the landing site showed workers approaching the landing capsule as several helicopters sat nearby on a broad patch of flat grassland. AFP

The government launched its formal investigation on Tuesday, involving ministries and departments from across the board, to pinpoint the exact cause of the fire, with investigators entering the building.

Over 100 people were working in the factory when workers heard a series of explosions from the second floor, where lithium-ion batteries were being inspected and packaged.

CCTV footage from the entrance of the factory building shows white smoke filling the area in less than 20 seconds, as people race out, the Yonhap news agency reported. Toxic fumes likely quickly overwhelmed workers in the area where the blaze began, the fire department has said, adding that as it was a lithium fire, the workers’ efforts to extinguish wouldn’t have worked.

Park Soon-kwan, CEO of Aricell, the owner of the lithium battery plant, apologized on Tuesday for the fire, saying the company would “support the needs in every way” of the families of the victims. AFP

THE District Warriors Philippines of Quezon City’s first district fought for flag and country and emerged victorious in the Mutant 2024 Cahaya Lestari Surabaya (CLS) Cup International Invitational League Under-23 Senior Basketball Boys’ Division in Indonesia last Saturday.

The District Warriors, backed by Quezon City 1st District Rep. Juan Carlos “Arjo” Atayde, withstood a late rally by the ACBA Tigers Sydney for a 75-71 win in a tightly contested championship game that featured five players from the winning side scoring in double figures.

QC District 1 Warriors PH win U23 title in Indonesia

Atayde commended the team for winning the international tourney.

“I salute this team for showing the world how Filipinos respond to pressure and adversity. Hindi sila bumigay, hindi sila bumitaw, ‘yan ang pusong Pinoy,” Atayde said.

The District Warriors, coached by Dale Lacorte and Vis Valencia, raced to a 74-65 lead with two minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the Tigers countered with a huge run to cut the deficit to 74-71.

The Aussies had a chance to tie the score following a turnover by the District Warriors, but an inspired defense

by the Filipinos forced their opponent to cough up the ball, giving the eventual champions the final possession.

A split free throw by the Filipinos with two seconds left sealed the game for the Filipino cagers.

Atayde, a member of the Youth and Sports Development Committee in the House of Representatives, praised all the players and the coaches for working cohesively as a unit to finish the singleround, weeklong tournament on top with a 5-1 win-loss record.

The District Warriors were paced by Custodio Lastra Jr. with 13 points, as well as Christopher Ang (11), Christian

The other members of the team are Ryan Arceo, Danren Nepomuceno, Joeben Loria, Patrick Buena, and Andrei Diaz, along with team coordinator Carl Lorenz Eserjose.

Funded by Atayde, the District Warriors Philippine team is composed of players selected during a series of tryouts from Atayde’s D1 Basketball League. Atayde, a known sports aficionado, also supports other sports like fencing, football and volleyball, among other sporting disciplines.

BingoPlus Foundation, Arena Plus co-present pioneering RunRio Pride Run

IN solidarity with the LGBTQIA+ community this Pride Month, BingoPlus Foundation—the social development arm of digital entertainment company Digiplus Interactive—has partnered with Love Yourself PH—a volunteerrun organization that provides free HIV and STI testing, counselling, treatment, and support—to further raise awareness about HIV and empower more people to check their health status. BingoPlus Foundation donated P500,000 to Love Yourself PH, aiming to increase the availability of HIV selftesting kits nationwide and boost the HIV test rate in the country. According to the Department of Health (DOH), current test rate is lower than its target, which is only at 40 percent.

“At least 50 new HIV cases are reported every day in the Philippines. This is alarming, and we hope that through these HIV self-test kits, our partner, Love Yourself PH can encourage more people to check their status, and consequently overcome the hesitancy and other barriers to HIV testing,” said Andy Tsui, Digiplus President and Bingoplus Foundation Chairman.

The Foundation handed over the check to Love Yourself PH at the first-ever RUNRIO Pride Run 2024 which was held last June 22 at the SM by the BAY in Pasay City. During the event, advocacy partner BingoPlus Foundation mounted an interactive installation to inspire “rainbow” runners to spread the love and get checked to mitigate the spread of HIV –regardless of age or gender.

Co-presented by Arena Plus— the 24/7 sports betting app and one of the flagship brands of DigiPlus—the RUNRIO Pride Run 2024 was organized to promote a healthy and active lifestyle and create a safe space where every queer person can freely express themselves without hesitation.

The 5,000 runners, mainly composed of members of the LGBTQIA+ community and their allies, participated in the running event, which featured three race distances, 3k, 5k, and 10, catering to runners of all levels.

“We are truly honored to co-present the RUNRIO Pride Run 2024 and be part of the vibrant and fun-filled celebration of Pride month,” said Tsui. “But beyond the colorful rainbow décors, we also un-

derstand that Pride is a movement, and we rally behind the community in their pursuit of equality and acceptance. By working together to promote inclusion and self-care, we can better multiply both the fun and the good.

Quezon Province Tangerines join MPVA

QUEZON is dead serious in transforming the province into a viable tourist destination and an epicenter of sporting power in Southern Luzon.

That, in a nutshell, is the plan as Quezon Province Gov. Dr. Helen Tan announced during a media conference on Monday that the province is forming a team that will be joining the coming second Season of the Maharlika Pilipinas Volleyball Association

(MPVA)—a semi-professional community-based home-and-away tournament.

Nicknamee ‘The Quezon Tangerines’, the team owned by Quezon Province 4th District Rep. Mike Tan and team manager Atty. Donn Ron Kapunan comprises the core of NCAA three-peat champion St. Benilde College, led by Most Valuable Player Mycah Go and Jessa Dorog.

Jerry Yee is head coach. As per tournament regulations, the team must include eight homegrown players and those who were selected through a series of tryouts are Lenie Sapallo, Jasmine Dapal, Christine Joy Lubiano, Louann Latigay, and Jillian Nicole Quiambao from Lucena City; Paola Alban from Lucban, Kamille Josephine Amaka Tan from Tayabas, and Geraldine Rae Palacio from Pagbilao.

“After basketball (Quezon Huskers), nagbuo kami ngayon ng team sa volleyball para sa MPVA. Volleyball is fast rising in terms of popularity among the youth, and we want to develop our volleyball program as we inspire our youth to represent the province and become champions in the future,” said Tan during the team presentation at the Quezon Provincial Hall in Lucena City. Tan acknowledged the impact of sports not just with its tourism and socio-economic aspects, but also in building the character of the young generations of Quezonians.

“May name-recall na, dati ang kilala lang Quezon City, ngayon bida na rin kami sa Quezon Province after we formed the Quezon Huskers in the MPBL. But, work in progress na ‘yung aming Sports Academy kung saan mas maraming sports pa ang gusto naming madevelop from grassroots hanggang sa elite status. Sa mga susunod na taon asahan ninyong

Edra: Barred to represent PH, wins for USA instead

FIL-AMERICAN breakdancing phe-

nom Logan Ellana Edra wanted to compete last year for the Philippines in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Cambodia.

But after officials of the Cambodian SEA Games Organizing Committee informed Philippine officials that they won’t let her, Edra went on a different direction and decided to compete for the Team USA instead.

Over the weekend, the 20-yearold Edra made it to Team USA, after reaching the quarterfinal round of the Olympic Qualifier Series 2024 for BGirls in Budapest.

Edra, competing under the moniker, Logistx, lost to French bet Sya Dembele, also known as Syssy, 1-2.

She still got one of seven spots to the Olympiad, though, with Ami Yuasa, who eventually topped the event after beating another Japanese Ayumi Yuasa.

Back then, Edra did not get a confirmation to be released from the United States’ DanceSport Breaking Division that would have allowed her to dance for the Philippines.

Edra was born and raised in San Diego, California, and started out at the age of seven.

There are still hopes, however, that Edra would one day do her breaking for the Philippines.

Two years ago, Edra made an active decision to try to compete for the Philippines when she made a couple of milestones.

Among these milestones were Edra’s title wins in the 2018 Silver Open, the 2020 Junior Breaking 7toSmoke Radical Forze Jam honors and 2021 Red Bull BC One World Finals.

Number of PH Paris Olympic bets now 20

TWENTY Filipino athletes are now going to the Paris Olympics, with swimmers Kayla Sanchez and Harold Hatch, golfers Bianca Pagdanganan and Dottie Ardina and judoka Kiyomi Watanade making the grade.

“Great news, and we can even ask for more,” said Philippine Olympic Committtee president Abraham “Bambol” Tolentino from Metz, France, where he’s overseeing the pre-Paris training camp at La Moselle with chef de mission Jonvic Remulla.

“Each day, as the countdown to the Olympics

dwindles, the morale goes higher and higher,” Tolentino added.

Sanchez, who switched nationality from Canada only two years ago, will swim in the women’s 100 meters freestyle while Hatch qualified for the men’s 100 butterfly.

Watanabe, on the other hand, will be in her second consecutive Olympics after making through the continental qualification route in women’s -63 kgs.

At 20 athletes, the Philippines already surpassed the number of athletes (19) in Tokyo 2020, where Hidilyn Diaz-Naranjo won the country’s first Olympic gold medal.

“But we’re expecting more,” said Tolentino as he awaits an official announcement from World Athletics on who will join world No. 2 men’s pole vaulter

“We’re chasing more history, we’re setting the ante higher,” said Tolentino, whose target is to match or surpass the one gold, two silver and one bronze medals clinched in Tokyo.

The other Filipino qualifies for Paris are weightlifters Vanessa Sarno, John Febuar Ceniza and Elreen Ando; boxers Aira Villegas, Hergie Bacyadan, Carlo Paalam, Nesthy Petecio and Eumir Felix Marcial; rower Joanie Delgaco; fencer Samantha Catantan; and gymnasts Carlos Yulo, Emma Malabuyo and Levi Ruivivar.

Boxing icon’s damaged statue to get makeover

TWO Filipino artists, with the help of friends from the boxing and arts communities, teamed up to clean the grave of legendary boxer Francisco Guilledo, better known as Pancho Villa, at the Manila North Cemetery. Rudy Aquino, a former personal portrait artist for boxing icon Manny Pacquiao, was moved by a Philippine News Agency post about the neglected state of Villa’s resting place.

The post showed photos of the damaged bust of the boxing hero and the area cluttered with trash, including dirty kitchen utensils, a wash basin, and an old helmet.

“I saw the post about the state of Villa’s graveyard and decided to visit to see if it was true. I discovered that informal settlers had occupied part of the area. I politely asked them to remove the extension kitchen and other trash,” Aquino explained. Fortunately, the occupants assisted Aquino in cleaning up the area. It’s not stopping there as Aquino plans to make a complete makeover of Villa’s grave.

Villa, known as the Brown Bomber, became the first Filipino world boxing champion when he knocked out Wales’ Jimmy Wilde in the seventh round of their flyweight duel in New York on June 18, 1923. He defended his title in Brooklyn in May 1924 and in Manila in May 1925.

He lost his final match in California on July 4, 1925, already suffering from a tooth problem that led to infections causing his death 10 days later at the age of 23. He was inducted into the International Boxing Hall of Fame in 1994.

Aquino noted that Villa’s grave is easily recognizable due to its features—his bust, with “Pancho Villa” clearly etched below it, and behind it an angel figure holding a belt proclaiming him as the world flyweight champion, with his gloves on the left side.

Aquino plans to seek permission from Villa’s family in the U.S., the Manila City government, the National Center for the Arts, the National Historical Commission, and the North Cemetery management to restore and renovate the grave.

Jerusalem eyes hometown WBC title defense in September

MELVIN Jerusalem will be fighting in front of his countrymen in the first week of September against undefeated Mexican challenger Luis Castillo to defend his prestigious World Boxing Council (WBC) minimum weight belt.

Manny Pacquiao’s MP Promotions will be arranging a quality fight card for the first title defense of the 30-year-old two-time world champion in September in a still undetermined venue, either in Manila or Masbate or General Santos City.

“Quality world boxing title will be coming soon to the Philippines, and Melvin Jerusalem, our present and only current world champion, will be a main part of it,” Pacquiao, the eight-division world cham-

pion, said. “It’s a great timing that he is holding one of the most prestigious world boxing titles—the WBC.” Castillo, 26, is a dangerous southpaw sporting 21 wins against one draw with 13 knockouts.

Although no exact date and venue have been announced yet in September, MP Promotions president Sean Gibbons said the timing is right because that’s what they have agreed upon with the WBC when its president Mauricio Sulaiman visited the country last March.

“For pride and country, this is surely a Filipino thing because for the longest time, everytime a Filipino becomes a world champion, he’s really obliged to go to defend his belt at his enemy’s territory,” Gibbons said.

“So Jerusalem is our last remaining hope at the moment, he is our only reigning Filipino world champion, and we need this fight to happen in the Philippines,” he added. Jerusalem, a former World Boxing Organization minimumweight champion, has taken home the WBC belt in Tokyo, Japan last March 31 after scoring a split decision victory over Japanese Yudai Shigeoka to put Philippine boxing back into the world boxing map.

Mendoza, Alburo win again, clinch JPGT finals seats

BACOLOD—Eliana Mendoza and Kvan Alburo continued their dominance in the 8-9 age category at the ICTSI JPGT Bacolod Visayas Series here yesterday (Tuesday), clinching their spots in the Philippine Junior National Match Play Championship. Mendoza delivered an impressive 84 to win the 36-hole competition for the second consecutive week, finishing with a total of 169. She outperformed Ana Marie Aguilar, who posted a 236 after a 114, while Faith Reosura placed third with a 238 after a 120 at the tight Bacolod Golf and Country Club.

“I’m very happy, this win means a lot to me because I got to make my family proud,” said the 9-year-old Mendoza from Cebu, who amassed 30 points for her twin victories, including her victory in Iloilo last week.

Fellow Cebuano Alburo mirrored Mendoza’s success, replicating his runaway triumph at the Iloilo Golf Club. He dominated the field, including Benedict Rolida and Benito Tiongko, with a two-day score of 170 after an 87, marked by birdies on Nos. 2 and 4 in hot, humid conditions. Rolida finished second with a 195 after a 95, while Tiongko came in third at 198, also after a 25-over (95) card.

Zuri Bagaloyos capped the Cebuanos’ sweep in the second leg of the Bacolod series organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc. The Singapore School-Cebu student secured a commanding win in the girls’ 10-12 division, avenging her defeat to Cailey Gonzales in the Iloilo leg.

SIMs in use on Globe, Smart networks properly registered

GLOBE Telecom Inc. and Smart Communications Inc. said Tuesday all SIM cards currently in use on their networks are registered. Globe said it has a system that prevents unregistered SIMs from being activated. It said a new SIM is only activated once registered through Globe’s SIM registration platforms.

“We designed our SIM registration system in such a way that no SIM can be used on the network unless registered. Therefore, all active SIMs within our network are in our system,” said Globe vice president and head of consumer mobile business Darius Delgado.

“Even as we continue to enhance our SIM registration platform, we already have measures in place that defend against the

PROPERTY developer SM Prime Holdings Inc. (SMPH) said Tuesday it raised P25 billion from the issuance of fixed-rate bonds on strong demand from investors.

SMPH said a disclosure to the stock exchange it issued and listed P25 billion worth of bonds in the Philippine Dealing and Exchange Corp. (PDEx) on June 24, 2024.

The offering has a base offer of P20 billion, but the strong demand allowed SMPH to exercise the P5-billion over-allotment option, which enabled it to raise P25 billion.

The company’s Series V, W and X due in 2027, 2029 and 2031, respectively, were issued as first tranche of its P100-billion bond shelf registration program approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission last month.

Interest rates for Series V were set at 6.5754 percent, Series W at 6.7537 percent and Series X at 6.965 percent.

The bonds were rated PRS Aaa with stable outlook by Philippine Rating Services Corp. A rating of PRS Aaa indicates that bonds are of the highest quality with minimal credit risk and the issuing company’s capacity to meet its financial commitment on the obligations is extremely strong.

SMPH will use the net proceeds from the fund-raising activity to fund debt refinancing and capital expenditures for expansion.

The property firm said it secured bridge loans to fund the refinancing of the Series G bonds worth P20 billion with an interest rate of 5.1683 percent per annum. The bonds matured in May.

SMPH earmarked P100 billion for 2024 capital expenditures primarily to bankroll expansion projects including the development of a 360-hectare reclamation project in Manila Bay.

It also plans to open four new malls this year that will add 440,000 square meters of gross floor area. Jenniffer B. Austria

PHINMA: New cold storage plants to cut food waste

BUSINESS leaders, government officials and experts agree on the need to expand the country’s cold storage facilities to address the problem of food waste. They made the statement in a forum on “Achieving Food Security: Advancing Investments for Agricultural Sustainability,” co-organized by PHINMA Corp., Stratbase ADR Institute and Makati Business Club. The hybrid event took place in Makati on Monday.

PHINMA Construction Materials Group executive vice president and PHINMA Corp. director Eduardo Sahagun opened the discussion by highlighting the urgent need for food security in the Philippines amid climate change, rising food and nutrition demands and logistical challenges.

He recalled Agriculture Secretary Francisco Laurel Jr.’s earlier pronouncement that 30 percent of the country’s agricultural produce is wasted due to a poor logistics system, while 51 million Filipinos face moderate or severe food insecurity, the highest in Southeast Asia, according to the United Nations.

“Our lofty dream is to allow farmers and fisherfolks to store their products for long periods, avoiding wastage and increasing the value of their goods,” Sahagun said.

“Our hope is for all of us to support the cold chain industry in the proper transport and storage of meat and fish, contributing to food security and food safety,” he said.

Danielle del Rosario, chief operating officer of the Union Insulated Panel Corporation, a unit of PHINMA, said improved agricultural infrastructure enhances food security by stabilizing and increasing the food supply.

NGCP asks ERC to allow cost recovery for energized projects

NATIONAL Grid Corp. of the Philippines expressed hope the Energy Regulatory Commission will act on the recoveries it applied for with the energization of the Hermosa-San Jose 500-kiloVolt (kV) transmission line at its full 8,000-megawatt (MW) capacity.

NGCP said in a statement the ERC allowed NGCP to recover only P19 million, or less than 0.1 percent of the actual cost of the P16.5 billion Hermosa-San Jose line component of the P20.94 billion MarivelesHermosa-San Jose transmission line project.

“With the completion of this critical project, NGCP is optimistic that the ERC will act on the overdue recoveries applied for by NGCP,” the company said.

NGCP assured the public and its stakeholders that it would continue to deliver on its commitment to improve, expand, strengthen and reinforce the country’s power grid.

A part of the Mariveles-HermosaSan Jose 500kV facility, the line will accommodate an additional 2,200 MW of supply from new power

plants in Bataan and Zambales to the rest of the Luzon grid.

Line 1 was energized on May 27, 2023 to accommodate power generation in Bataan with a 2,000-MW transfer capacity, only a quarter of its full capacity pending the completion of the then unfinished portion of the line, and was fully completed on May 19, 2024, enabling a 4,000-MW line capacity.

The full completion of Line 2 will accommodate 8,000 MW in generation capacity, more than enough for existing and any incoming generation.

“NGCP completes this landmark energy project under the leadership and guidance of Pres. Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. This marks the full completion and energization at full capacity of this critical facility, strengthening and expanding the grid under NGCP,” the company said.

The Mariveles-Hermosa-San Jose 500kV line consists of 395 transmission towers, 275.6 circuit kilometers of transmission lines, two new substations and 2,000 MVA in substation capacity. Alena Mae S. Flores

regulation to boost energy investments

MEMBERS of the electricity value chain underscored the importance of clear and fair policy guidelines and regulation due to the huge investments needed for energy projects.

“[There are] risks that the private sector needs to take,” Aboitiz Power Corp. chief corporate services officer Carlos Aboitiz said, referring to private investments in more generation capacities and emerging technologies.

“The capital intensity of the industry [highlights] the importance of orchestrating and creating an environment of certainty for investors,” said Aboitiz who served as a moderator during a recent Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry panel discussion on the energy sector.

First Gen Corp. president and chief operating officer Francis Giles Puno said the

Philippine Energy Plan (PEP) requires a significant amount of investment.

The PEP 2020-2040 (PEP) estimates that an additional capacity of 92.3 gigawatts of renewable energy projects by 2040 under a Clean Energy Scenario will cost P5.8 trillion in investments.

Renewable energy will have a 35-percent and 50-percent share in the power generation mix by 2030 and 2040, respectively.

“First Gen’s balance sheet cannot do it all alone. AboitizPower’s balance sheet cannot do it all alone,” Puno said. “So, it does require a lot of collaboration.”

The panel discussion focused on perspectives of industry stakeholders, featured representatives from the generation, transmission, distribution and retail electricity supplier (RES) segments.

Other Asian markets edged higher Tuesday after recent losses as investors ignored another tough day for tech titans on Wall Street that has raised concerns about a correction in markets following a string of record highs.

Investors are also keeping tabs on Tokyo after Japan’s top currency official warned authorities were ready 24 hours a day to intervene to support the yen as it sits around three-decade lows against the dollar.

With US data indicating the world’s top economy remains in rude health and the jobs market is still tight, investors are unsure about the Federal Reserve’s plans for interest rates, with debate centered on when -- or even if -- it will cut this year.

The focus is now on the release Friday of the personal consumption expenditures (PCE) index -- the Fed’s favored inflation gauge -- with traders hoping for another slowdown that would give decision-makers room to start loosening policy. Jenniffer B. Austria with AFP

Asia Pacific College educates with strong IT foundation

YEARS after the first SM mall opened, the vision of founder Henry Sy Sr. extended beyond a single establishment. The chain of malls would come later.

When SM City North EDSA opened in 1985, the vision was clear: access to products was important, but Filipinos’ access to quality education was invaluable.

Sy turned his vision into reality in 1991 through a key partnership between SM Foundation Inc. and IBM Philippines. The collaboration led to the establishment of Asia Pacific College (APC), embodying the adage: “Give a man a fish, and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime.”=

“From the start, the vision was very clear — it was inclusivity,” said APC president Dr. Teresita Medado. “Quality education should be available to all, and this was APC’s way of helping young people become competitive IT professionals for the industry,” she said.

The SM group underscofred this commitment to inclusivity by making APC a non-profit, non-stock institution.

The 1990s saw the information technology (IT) sector booming. Countless theories and key innovators envisioned interconnectivity beyond anyone’s imagination. Encapsulating industry, integrity, and innovation as its core values, APC’s mission became to educate students for the global stage with a strong IT foundation.

APC continues its legacy of providing quality education, earning a perfect QS five-star rating in four categories: inclusivity through a wide range of scholarships; online learning via Hyflex (Hybrid-Flexible), which emphasizes empathy, equity and engagement; flexible teaching methods; and employability, with 92.8 percent of graduates securing key positions in the industry.

QS Stars is a university rating system designed to showcase the strengths of educational institutions.

SEC shuts down 6 lending companies

THE Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) said Tuesday it issued cease-and-desist order against six financing and lending companies which are not compliant with the rules and regulations of the commission.

The six firms that were ordered to stop operations were 9F Lending Philippines Inc., Elending Lending Inc., Hovono Lending Corp, Makati Loan Inc., Second Pay Financing Inc. and Tekwang Lending Corp.

THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Board approved a flagship infrastructure project designed to boost broadband connectivity nationwide, particularly in remote areas, and strengthen cybersecurity.

The NEDA Board, in its 18th meeting at Malacañang Tuesday, gave the green light to the Philippine Digital Infrastructure Project (PDIP) and approved adjustments to the parameters of nine other ongoing projects.

With a budget of P16.1 billion financed through official development assistance from the World Bank, the PDIP is set to enhance the country’s broadband connectivity and bring high speed internet connection even in disadvantaged areas, augment digital infrastructure to bridge the digital divide, stimulate private sector investments, and strengthen capacity for cybersecurity and for protecting critical information infrastructure.

The project, anchored on the National Broadband Program, a flagship initiative of the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT), involves the construction of a public broadband infrastructure network. This network comprises five major components including backbone network, middle-mile network, access network (last-mile), network security and project management support.

the media conference for his 47th birthday concert Welcome to My World at Tipsy Pig in Quezon City, the WCOPA grand champion suggested that a collaboration with Stell would be ideal to avoid any potential fan conflicts.

“He’s amazing. He’s incredibly talented. His vocal range is outstanding. I remember myself in him 20 years ago. It’s great to see more opportunities opening up for artists like Stell,” he told the press answering a question about whether he’d be willing to work with SB19’s lead vocalist.

“Before, being a balladeer meant sounding like Martin Nievera or Gary Valenciano , right? But now, there’s a lot more diversity in the sound of balladeers. I enjoyed his performance at the David Foster concert—it was fantastic. I also saw him in Erik Santos ’ concert in the US, too. That momentum will continue because he’s truly exceptional. As long as you stay true to your core, that success will keep coming,” said the Kapamilya singer.

“But it just leads to unnecessary conflicts, right? So, if we collaborate on something beautiful that everyone can enjoy—Stell’s fans, my fans—it would be much more enjoyable. Recently, Jed renewed his contract with Star Magic, marking fourteen years since he joined in 2010.

“I’m still with Star Magic, and I spoke with Direk Lauren. I asked him, ‘Direk Lauren [Dyogi] , what else do you see in me that I can do?’ I’m open to whatever projects Direk Lauren thinks are suitable for me,” Jed remarked.

IT’S Pride month and as the season ushers in all things rainbow-colored along with calls for equality and acceptance, iWantTFC, the home of Filipino stories, joins the celebration by curating a list of Pinoy shows and movies, that uplift LGBTQIA+ voices and culture that allies and members of the community can stream for free.

In the 1980s, Nora Aunor and Vilma Santos combined their star power to headline the classic movie, T-Bird at Ako, a crime drama about a female lawyer who defends a sexy dancer accused of homicide, while struggling to contain her growing affection for her client. Another must-watch on iWantTFC is Mga Batang Poz, a six-episode series about the journey of four HIV-positive teenagers who try their best to live normal lives despite the stigma brought by their condition. The series is based on the best-selling young adult novel by Palanca-winning author, Segundo Matias Jr., and stars Mark Nuemann, Fino Herrera, Paolo Gumabao, and Awra Briguela For those who love comingof-age films, they can rely on Boyette: Not a Girl Yet, which

MPHASIZING the importance of community and its status as one of the foremost art and history museums in the Philippines, Ayala Museum celebrates “We Have History” on its golden anniversary this month.

To celebrate, the Ayala Museum will hold important exhibitions, activations, and free admission days for the rest of 2024. These include a new and innovative experience for the 50-year-old Diorama exhibition, a series of concerts and a music festival, as well as a banner exhibition featuring the genius of Fernando Zóbel, who envisioned the museum.

Mariles Gustilo, senior director of Ayala Museum expressed gratitude to everyone with whom the museum had and continues to have “history,” saying, “A heartfelt shoutout to the tireless men and women of Ayala Museum, past and present. And like all good things, we couldn’t have done this without our countless cohorts and collaborators. But most of all a resounding ‘thank you’ to the community we serve, for the unwavering support and loyalty, and for allowing us to play a role in your lives all these years. You are the reason we try harder.”

This month Ayala Museum begins the celebration of its golden year by giving back to the public through two free-toaccess exhibitions, as well as a grand free admission day for families.

The Ayala Museum kicks off its celebration with two exhibitions emphasizing its commitment to increasing the accessibility of art and the importance of community in the creative process.

The first is a new OpenSpace exhibition called Bonhui Uy: Works of Whimsy, featuring sculptures by Bonhui Uy, a Philippine-born artist from Hawaii known for his whimsical but cleverly designed sculptures, prints, and collages. Among

these sculptures is a large-scale version of his rooster sculpture which stands proudly at the Makati Avenue entrance of Ayala Museum. Also included are some animal sculptures that are “released” in the Greenbelt Zen Garden fronting the museum’s mall entrance. These are on view for free until July 14. Works of Whimsy also revisits the memory of Ayala Museum’s conservation and biological research efforts in the 1970s-1990s, including the bygone museum aviary and Filipinas Journal of Science and Culture.

The second exhibition is another free-to-access show at the Museum’s 2/F changing gallery in partnership with Ang Ilustrador ng Kabataan (INK), a longtime partner of Ayala Museum. Entitled Worlds within Worlds , it features over 100 works by illustrator members of INK, filled with intriguing images that allude to a multiverse where the mundane is transformed into the wondrous and fantastical. By disrupting conventional notions of reality, these works invite viewers to go beyond the obvious and explore possibilities of co-existence with those whose worlds overlap with ours.

Worlds within Worlds is free for the public to view through the Museum’s entrance in the Greenbelt 4 walkway until July 28. Also part of the initial offerings of the Museum for its 50th anniversary is INKfest 2024, another activation in partnership with Ang INK. Ang INK has been annually hosting INKfest to ignite the imaginations of children with creative storytelling, art, and illustrations by children’s book illustrators. This event on June 30 will also double as a free admission day for kids and their families.

This event recreates dioramas by members of Ang INK, aiming to make Philippine history more accessible and engaging for children while also fostering a deeper love for the country through art. It will also feature a wide range of activities such as reading and drawing sessions, craft making, coloring, and foiling.

Pre-booking of slots is required to participate for free in INKfest 2024 at Ayala Museum on June 30. Slots will be offered on a first-come, first-served basis. Follow Ayala Museum’s social media pages for the announcement of the opening of registration.

Filipino artists Ross Capili and Rico Lascano present their reflections on the shifting dynamics of nature and the enduring sense of wonder it evokes in Interchange exhibit, ongoing until Aug. 3, at Conrad Manila in Pasay City.

The 30th series of Of Art and Wine by Conrad Manila, the exhibit features 32 art pieces. Capili’s works explore and offer a visual feast of the profound connection between nature and music. His passion for music can be seen in his brushstrokes, which depict the rhythm of rain and wind, as well as the vibrant crescendo of colors in bloom. His signature metallic orb hovers on canvas, symbolizing the presence of the sun and moon overseeing this eternal and universal harmony.

Lascano is renowned for his Zen-themed artistry. He perceives nature as serene, inviting internal reflection and deep contemplation. In this exhibit, water, sky, and wind are depicted with a renewed and intimate vision – quiet, still, and misty,

Rising stars in the world of ballet

TWO young and upcoming ballerinas brought home a total of seven gold medals at the recently concluded Youth Educational Friendship Festival Dance Competition in Da Nang, Vietnam. At just six years old, Anne Gelise Caling Pedron , also known as Gelly, has achieved remarkable success in ballet, winning four gold medals for her performances in various categories: Candide Fairy Classical Ballet Solo, Lilac Fairy Classical Ballet Solo, Contemporary Ballet Solo, and Modern Ballet Solo.

Gracing the exhibit opening were SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation president Elizabeth Sy and SM Hotels and Conventions Corporation executive vice-president Peggy Angeles, with PG-FLEX Premium Plastic Group President and Moto-italia Philippines Inc. chairman Nelson Guevarra as guest speaker. Meanwhile, artist Anastacio E. Silverio showcases a compelling blend of everyday life and musical inspiration in his exhibit Musa at Musika, at the NCCA Gallery in Intramuros, Manila City. Featuring 14 two-dimensional artworks, the exhibit runs until June 30.

Silverio curated pieces that reflect his unique ability to draw inspiration from his environment, emotions, and mundane experiences. His works encapsulate the resilience and emotive power of music, portraying it as a force that elicits love and

helps overcome obstacles. Each piece is a visual narrative focusing on a solitary character set within subtly fantastical landscapes. Notably, he incorporates images of computer motherboards to create a dialogue with technology, revealing intricate landscape details that merge technology with nature and blend the old with the new.

The NCCA Gallery is located on the Ground Floor, NCCA Building, 633 General Luna St., Intramuros, 1002 Manila. NCCA Gallery Hours are from Mondays to Thursdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., and on Fridays and Saturdays, from 9:00 a.m. to 3:00 p.m. For more information on the NCCA Gallery, call (+63 2) 8527 2192 or email gallery@ ncca.gov.ph.

The school’s impressive list of achievements includes wins at the Philippine Dance Cup, ABAP International Dance Competition, International Ballet Grand Prix, International Youth Performing Arts Championship in Malaysia, World Ballet Competition USA, World Ballet Art Competition Grand Prix in Taiwan and Canada, Asia-Pacific Dance Competition in Singapore, Asian Grand Prix in Hong Kong, and the Dance Competition in Australia, among others. AESCB meticulously selects and prepares its students each year for both local and international competitions, ensuring they undergo rigorous weekly training to attain success in the highly competitive world of ballet.

For the exhibit, there was an array of mini Ikebana masterpieces depicting the group members’ favorite theater plays and productions. Yap’s arrangement was Mamma Mia, about a young bride seeking to discover her real father. Her wedding on a Greek island brought together her mother’s ex-lovers. The colors of the blue Aegean Sea were represented by three blue antique medicine bottles, while the flowers and stucco homes on a cliff were captured in many colors with materials snipped from her garden and that of her neighbors.

She used modern materials, an unusual platform, and colorful vases. Galang’s interest in Ikebana is inspired by her grandmother, Carmen Guevara, founder of the Manila Chapter. Despite growing up with Ikebana all over their home, she didn’t pursue Ikebana until two years ago. Since then, she has been continuously taking Ikebana classes and would like to incorporate it into her gardening. Other arrangements on exhibit were Chicago by Cynthia Heussaff Phantom of the Opera by Tita Manuel, The Lion King by Laly San Luis Wicked by Maricor Mendoza, Mulan by Babyruth Chuaunsu Madame Butterfly by Lily Gan, Evita by Elena Ong, Les Miserables by Michele Tan, and Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat by Marc Tomas Christina Abalos, president of Ikebana International Manila Chapter 108, says Manila will be hosting the next Asian Regional Conference. , a

Her arrangement captures the essence of Rama and Sita’s journey, mirroring the equilibrium between love and duty. The arrangement showed an interplay of entwined branches, with a soft arc reflecting the deep affection and gentleness shared by the two.
