PH won’t go to war, be intimidated— PBBM

Hails PN sailors for showing restraint

PRESIDENT Marcos said Sunday the Philippines "will not be intimidated" by anyone but also said that the government will not resort to war to resolve the territorial dispute between the Philippines and China.

“We are not in the business to instigate wars – our great ambition is to provide a peaceful and prosperous life for every Filipino. This is the drum beat. This is the principle that we live by and that we march by,” President Marcos said in remarks at the military's Western Command in Palawan yesterday.

ALBAY Rep. Edcel Lagman on Sunday took a swipe at a Catholic lay ecclesial movement for rejecting divorce amid reports that the group is willing to mount a people’s initiative campaign to block this measure. “Let us stop the religious hypocrisy being spread by the ‘Couples for Christ’ (CFC) that because of human weakness the Philippines must not enact a divorce law, but instead mend broken marriages,” he said in a statement.

“It is precisely because of human frailties, like marital abuse, infidelity and abandonment, among other mortal weaknesses, that marriages are totally destroyed beyond repair,” the lawmaker stressed. Lagman underscored the relevance of what Pope Francis wrote in footnote 351 of Amoris Laetitia (The Joy of Love) that “the Eucharist is not a prize for the perfect, but a powerful medicine and nourishment for the weak,” in considering giving the sacrament of communion to divorced and remarried Catholics.

PBBM wants Pasig river rehab done in 3 years

PRESIDENT Marcos

Jr. said Sunday he expects the ongoing construction of the Pasig Bigyang Buhay Muli (PBBM) Project in Manila to be completed in three years.

The PBBM Project Showcase Area Phase 1C connects the showcase area behind the Manila Central Post Office to the renowned Intramuros.

The continuation features tiendas which will house at least 32 businesses and is expected to create livelihood opportunities in the area.

This new development comes five months after the successful opening of the showcase area in January.

The transformation had since extended to the Intramuros area to provide tourists on foot a convenient access from the showcase area to the historic walled city.

The showcase area has been a popular hangout spot for people from all walks of life because of its open-air, relaxing ambience and picturesque vibe. With the impending completion of the commercial structure, visitors will also have the opportunity to add dining and shopping to their Pasig River itinerary.

The structure has at least 32 tiendas on the ground floor – some will be airconditioned while others will be naturally-ventilated. Above it will be a roof deck, which will have a viewing area with the same design and feel of the Intramuros wall.

The roof deck connects to the pedestrian walkway and bike lane which is among the highlights of the PBBM project to promote transport connectivity. The elevated bike lane is designed to improve pedestrianization and accessibility of Intramuros as a historical and heritage site that caters to both locals and tourists.

Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development (DHSUD) Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar, concurrent chief of the IAC-PRUD, attributed the development to the staunch advocacy of the First Lady, who personally toured the project site last April.

The revitalization project stemmed from Executive Order No. 35, issued by President Marcos last year calling to “transform Pasig River back into historically pristine condition conducive to transport, recreation and tourism.”

In addition to restoring the old glory of the river, the project also aims to help ease traffic on the surface streets by promoting water transportation through the Pasig Ferry System—an alternative method of commuting within Metro Manila.

Speaker’s office releases funds for Tondo fire victims

THE office of House Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez has facilitated the release of P2.5 million in cash assistance from the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) to 125 families displaced by a fire in Barangay 58 in Tondo, Manila on June 16.

House Deputy Secretary General Sofonias Gabonada Jr. said each family received P20,000 under the DSWD’s Assistance to Individuals in Crisis Situation (AICS) program through the seamless delivery of aid by Manila Rep. Ernesto Dionisio Jr.

During his visit, the President awarded medals to 80 sailors involved in the resupply mission, including one whose thumb was severed, when their boat was attacked by the Chinese coast guard in Ayungin shoal.

China’s hostile actions near Ayungin or Second Thomas Shoal on June 17 were "clearly not an accident and misunderstanding, as he urged the Philippine government to be careful in its efforts to de-escalate the situation in the West Philippine Sea.

At present, Guo is under a six-month preventive suspension order by the Ombudsman due to a graft complaint, among other administrative charges, filed by the Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG).

Also recently, the Philippine National Police-Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (PNP-CIDG) and the Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission (PAOCC) filed a non-bailable qualified human trafficking charge against Guo and other individuals in connection with the illegal Philippine Offshore Gaming Operations (POGO) in Bamban.

He said the Office of the Speaker, along with Tingog party-list Reps. Yedda Romualdez and Jude Acidre prepared 400 food packs for fire victims sourced from the personal calamity funds of lawmakers.

“Through the concerted efforts of the Office of Speaker Ferdinand Martin Romualdez, Tingog party-list, and DSWD, we have mobilized immediate relief for the families devastated by the Tondo fire,” he added.

“Furthermore, an additional allocation from the AICS program has been provided, ensuring each affected family will receive P20,000 to help them recover and rebuild,” he cited.

SC: Don’t use single-use plastic

THE Supreme Court (SC) has strongly encouraged all courts and personnel of the judiciary not to use single-use plastics in daily activities and operations.

In a Memorandum Order No. 74-2024

signed by Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo, the SC said as part of protecting the people’s constitutional right to balanced and healthful ecology, it urged all offices in the SC and lower-level courts, as well as concessionaires within any court premise, to be mindful of their

consumption of single-use plastics.

Single-use plastics, such as plastic bags, straws, cups, cutlery, plates, and food containers, contribute to environmental degradation, waterway pollution, and marine life destruction.

As an alternative, the SC said, the use of sustainable materials such as

cloth bags, metal or bamboo straws, reusable cutlery, plates, and food containers is encouraged.

The SC memorandum also mandates that procurement officers in the Judiciary must also consider avoiding the purchase of single-use plastics in favor of reusable or recyclable materials.

“If plastic products are necessary and unavoidable, they should be reused, recycled, and disposed of properly, in accordance with the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act,” the high court stressed.

The SC issued the memorandum order noting that the law mandates the adoption of a systematic, comprehensive, and ecological solid waste management program that ensures the protection of public health and the environment.

“The law also sets guidelines and targets for solid waste avoidance and volume reduction through source reduction and waste minimization measures. The guidelines are complemented by various local ordinances banning the use of single-use plastics,” the SC said.

Campos blasts telcos for slow internet speeds

MAKATI City Rep. Luis Campos, Jr. on Sunday expressed disappointment over the failure of telecommunications companies to improve their internet services.

“Telcos are simply not doing enough to improve their networks,” Campos lamented in a news release, criticizing them for the Philippines’ low ranking in global mobile internet speed rankings.

“This is why we want Congress to pass a new law so that the government can set compulsory deadlines for telcos to deliver faster mobile internet speeds under pain of punitive regulatory fines,” the lawmaker added.

The Philippines’ mobile internet speed slowed to an average of 32.12 megabits per second (Mbps) last month, causing the country to fall by four notches to rank No. 83 worldwide in Ookla’s May 2024 Global Speedtest Index, according to Campos.

“We want to accelerate mobile internet speeds to improve public access to online resources, government services, education, and new opportunities,” he said. In the May 2024 rankings, the Philippines still placed number 6 among the 10 member countries of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).

QC holds special graduation rites for non-binaries

A TOTAL of 394 nonbinary individuals took center stage Saturday as they joined Quezon City’s special “Graduation Rights” at the Quezon Memorial Circle.

The gathering was one of the special activities the city lined up for its 85th anniversary and the celebration of Pride Month. The event was deemed historic as Quezon City became the first local government unit (LGU) in the country to hold a symbolic ceremony that gives members of the LGBTQIA+ community the opportunity to march and show the public what they really are.

The participants included those who were previously prohibited from joining their graduation rites because of their gender identity and expression, or forced to conform to outward appearances inconsistent with their SOGIESC (sexual orientation, gender identity, expression and sex characteristics).

“The oldest ‘Rainbow Graduate’ was 75 years old,” the city government said in a press statement.

Mayor Joy Belmonte led the ceremony, highlighting its significance, as her administration continues to set the benchmark for adopting diversity, equity and inclusive policy frameworks. TV host KaladKaren, a transgender woman, delivered the keynote speech.

“Graduation rites are everyone’s rights, regardless of gender identity and expression. In Quezon City, you have the right to express your truth, no matter your sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression (SOGIE),” Belmonte said.

“Hopefully in the future, we will no longer need to hold such a ceremony because all schools will be inclusive,” the mayor added.

PBBM to visit Negros Occ., Antique on June 27

BACOLOD City — President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. is set to visit Negros Occidental and Antique on Thursday, June 27, bringing with him substantial aid for farmers and fishermen under the Presidential Assistance to Farmers and Fisherfolk (PAFF) program.

Bacolod Mayor Alfredo Abelardo

Benitez confirmed the visit during a media briefing, highlighting the preparations already underway by presidential personnel for the President’s arrival. The Chief Executive’s visit aims to provide financial support to individuals facing economic challenges, with

a special focus on the agricultural and fishing sectors.

Marcos will personally oversee the distribution of cash assistance to some 10,000 beneficiaries in Negros Occidental, among them 3,000 recipients are from Bacolod City, while each of the other districts in Negros will receive aid for 1,000 individuals.

First Lady Liza Marcos will lead a separate initiative called the “Laboratoryo para sa lahat” (LAB for All) project during the visit.

PH-US joint exercises sharpened skills of Filipino Marines—Adaci

PHILIPPINE Navy chief Vice Admiral Toribio Adaci Jr. on Friday cited the United States and the Philippine Marine Aviation Support Activity (MASA) this year for having sharpened the skills of the Filipino Marines through joint military exercises.

For the past three weeks, the US Marines and their Filipino counterparts conducted large scale military exercises in the country, seen as a reaffirmation of the US commitment to security in Asia.

In his remarks at the conclusion of the drills in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig City, Adaci explained that this year’s MASA was “specifically designed to enhance capabilities, develop interoperability, and strengthen cooperation in the context of aviation-supported operations.”

“This year’s activities were extensive and varied, ranging from littoral live-fire exercises and forward arming and refueling operations to maritime key terrain security operations and tactical combat casualty care.” Adaci said.

He also emphasized the involvement of two countries’ forces that enriched the naval training experience of the Philippines, honing the Navy’s capacity for humanitarian assistance and disaster response, and improved readiness to provide effective aid during natural disasters.

“One of the most remarkable aspects of MASA 2024 has been the diverse participation of various forces from both the Philippines and the United States,” Adaci said.

“The involvement of such diverse forces has enriched our training experience and showcased the strength and versatility of our collective capabilities,” he added.

ment-provided healthcare.

The project, a collaboration among various government agencies, local government units, and the private sector, aims to serve about 1,500 beneficiaries.

“There is also a possibility that the President will attend the inauguration of a housing project in Barangay Vista Alegre, although this has not been confirmed yet,” Benitez said.

Meanwhile, Antique Gov. Rhodora Cadiao confirmed to Manila Standard that after the visit to Negros, President Marcos will proceed to Antique to distribute similar financial assistance to needy residents.

SOME 900 women from Albay province were delivered from poverty after engaging in a two-year intervention program led by the international nongovernment organization Women Empowerment on Leadership in Economics Resources, Access, and Participation (WE-LEAP).

Organized into 61 self-help groups, these women from 47 barangays in Manito and Camalig towns embraced entrepreneurial ventures and community development initiatives with support from local and international partners. Among WELEAP’s collaborators were the Mayon Integrated Development Alternative Services (MIDAS) and the Bicol Center for Community Development (BCCD). The Spanish Cooperation Agency (AECID) has provided €2 million (approximately P120 million) to fund the initiative. Angelita Lirio, a 43-year-old mother of seven from Sitio San Jose, Barangay Nagotgot in Manito, recalled how her small group of 17 women started with modest ambitions. Initially retailing a single sack of rice, they diversified into selling dried fish, cassava chips, brooms, and liniments. Despite initial skepticisms from their community, Angelita’s group persevered. She said they ignored the critics who doubted their ability to succeed.

Today, their locally produced dried fish or ‘danggit’ is a best seller at SM City Legazpi Supermarket.

Alwin Nol, the village chief of Nagotgot, is a staunch supporter of the self-help groups. Impressed by their success, he now considers encouraging the women to ramp up cassava chip production to cater to tourists visiting the nearby Nag-aso Lake, a renowned local attraction.

In Barangay Caguiba, 28-year-old Joan Murilla Pepaño reflected on her transformation from a mere housewife to a confident entrepreneur. With a business built on their home-grown lettuce, she and her group have ventured into producing vegetable salads, a source of pride and financial stability for the group.

OPINION

Take a long view

(Part 3)

RICE consumption is a function of population. We consume more because we are more. Many decry that Thai and Vietnamese farmers trained at UP Los Banos and IRRI in Laguna, yet we now import from them.

This is a silly observation, because it fails to account for the fact that in 1978, Thailand and the Philippines had about the same population, 43-44 million. Thailand is now 70; we are 115 million.

Yet Thailand is all of 51 million hectares in basically contiguous land, while all our islands put together comprise just 30 million hectares.

Which is why Thailand has more than 9 million hectares of palay fields, while ours is just 4 million.

Vietnam has 7 million hectares devoted to rice, and its water source, the mighty Mekong River, accounts for its higher per hectare productivity. (A kilo of rice requires 5,000 liters of water to thrive.)

Indonesia has 11 million hectares planted to rice, but it has 280 million people, which is why it still has to import rice. Yet it imports less than we do, but maintains a huge buffer stock through Bulog, its equivalent of our then non-castrated NFA.

So there: we eat more but we produce less. What should be done?

First, we need to promote economies of scale in food production, even on rice.

The agrarian reform program has subdivided what used to be large farms into minifarms, which, at next generation transfers, is only 1.5 to 2 hectare-sized farms.

We have to consolidate these into bigger plots, through cooperatives or even corporate-managed farms so that mechanization and management will produce more yield per hectare. Vietnam produces 6 tons per hectare while we produce only about 4.

While their farmers have small plots as well, the socialist government consolidates these into successful cooperatives, while our farmers, except for some in Central Luzon, are on their own with their tiny plots.

If huge conglomerates like San Miguel, the MVP and Aboitiz groups, etc., were to manage consolidated agrarian reform beneficiaries and produce optimally, there is little reason why we cannot produce even just 5 tons per hectare.

They can use this for their employee consumption, and sell the excess to government through NFA, or if Senator Cynthia Villar, the chair of agriculture in the Senate wishes, to whatever other agency.

Then again, NIA should review its current performance, especially since, even in Central Luzon, their end-line irrigation beneficiaries receive little if any water. COA should be very vigilant about NIA

on rice

performance, where irrigation canals built do not have enough sources of water, as even NEDA chief Arsi Balisacan discovered in PNoy’s time. There is a lot of harvested palay which are lost due to poor post-harvest facilities, with many subsistence farmers drying their palay in paved roads.

The total loss attributed to poor harvest facilities goes to some 7 percent, which translates to 1.4 million tons of palay, assuming DA’s total figures of 20 million tons.

That 7 percent loss is equivalent to 840,000 tons of rice.

Supposing every congressman and senator’s pork barrel is slashed in half, which is still hefty compared to what these legislators got in PNoy’s time, that would amount to at least 400 billion pesos, more than enough to have mechanized dryers in every riceproducing province, whether solar-power driven or conventional, on top of increasing our irrigation facilities to produce at least 500,000 more tons of rice.

There are many more solutions which could make palay farming more profitable for the country’s diminishing farmers

Philrice should be able to develop, along with IRRI, better inbred seeds, instead of importing highly-priced hybrid seeds that produce rice fit only for rich men’s tables, and which require more fertilizers and other inputs.

Of course all these prescriptions would take some time to be fruitful, yet why are they not being started?

There are many more solutions which could make palay farming more profitable for the country’s diminishing farmers, and if we start funding and implementing these seriously, we could produce at least 95 percent of our consumption needs by 2030.

We can then project rationally what we need to import to address the shortfall, given population increases (with government adopting more pro-active measures to taper our population growth).

Then we can program our import volumes over the next five to 10 years through long-term supply contracts, instead of our current practice of buying when the shortfall stares us in the face already. (Conclusion in next column)

Brighter future through sustainable infrastructure

AS A Filipino consumer, I have watched with anticipation as our nation embarks on an ambitious push to modernize and enhance our infrastructure.

The government’s “Build Better More” initiative, highlighted in President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s State of the Nation Address in 2023, promises to boost economic efficiency by improving transportation and reducing costs and time for the movement of goods and services.

The Philippine Development Plan 20232028 stresses the need for infrastructure investment to address inadequacies and enhance connectivity, including water resources and social infrastructure.

The National Economic and Development Authority has approved 194 projects worth P9 trillion, showcasing the government’s commitment.

At the recent Philippine Economic Briefing in Manila, DOTr Secretary Jaime Bautista highlighted over 155 projects in the Transportation Modernization Program.

The DOTr oversees 69 Infrastructure Flagship Projects out of 185, totaling P5,789.13 billion (63 percent of the total indicative cost). Since November 2022, investmentapproved projects by the DOTr amount to P369.3 billion.

The department aims to accelerate builds through improved project identification, diversified funding, and better implementation strategies.

The private sector plays a crucial role in achieving the ambitious objectives outlined in the PDP, with major local and multinational players actively responding and committing as long-term partners.

A notable player in this domain is ACCIONA, a global leader in sustainable infrastructure development.

Their Southeast Asia headquarters in Manila demonstrates their commitment to the Philippines and t he region.

Among ACCIONA’s notable achievements is the Cebu-Cordova Bridge, an 8.5-kilometer engineering marvel that boosts regional economic growth, tourism, and urban development by enhancing connectivity, reducing travel time, and alleviating traffic congestion.

Collaboration between the government and the private sector is crucial to realizing these benefits

Meanwhile, the Malolos-Clark Railway Line 02 and Line 04 projects will revolutionize the country’s transportation by introducing the first-ever Airport Railway Express Service, connecting Makati to Clark in just 55 minutes.

Additionally, the South Commuter Railway Project 02 will transform Manila’s transit system, reducing travel time along the 147-kilometer NSCR from Clark Airport to Calamba.

the enforcement of SIM card registration.

THE SIM Registration Act of 2022 was designed to put an end to text scams by unscrupulous individuals eager to make a fast buck at the expense of the unsuspecting public.

It is the National Telecommunications Commission tasked to implement the law.

Now, two years later, the agency admits mandatory Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) registration is turning out to be ineffective in preventing text scams victimizing the unwary and the gullible.

The NTC stressed while the SIM Registration Act was “an important tool” to fight against scams perpetrated using mobile phones as it provides the legal sanctions for SIM-aided offenses, it was “not a silver bullet against messaging scams.”

The telco regulator issued the statement after Sen. Sherwin Gatchalian accused it of “sleeping on the job” after recent raids conducted against Smartweb Technology

Corp. in Pasay City, Zun Yuan Technology Inc. in Bamban, Tarlac, and Lucky South 99, which straddles Porac town and Angeles City in Pampanga yielded numerous SIM cards that had supposedly been used to perpetrate various fraud and scamming activities.

In the case of Zun Yuan, authorities discovered SIM cards bearing false identities, along with various phones and scripts for scamming purposes.

—“—

We believe the NTC should now proactively work with law enforcement agencies to investigate rising cases of text scams

These SIM cards were said to be used in undertaking love scams, cryptocurrency scams, and other investment scams.

The NTC said these scamming activities “have become a regional phenomenon not confined only within the Philippines,” thus acknowledging the need to enhance

IN THE heart of Davao City, a public feud between Mayor Sebastian “Baste” Duterte and Senator Christopher “Bong” Go has stirred the political pot. This clash, marked by sharp criticisms and social media outbursts, has broader implications for the city’s leadership and the national political landscape.

On June 20, Mayor Duterte lambasted Senator Go on Facebook, accusing him of lacking a strong political stance and exploiting former President Rodrigo Duterte for publicity.

“Pussy!” he exclaimed, challenging Go to take a stand against the perceived tyranny of President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s administration.

The mayor’s outburst came just days after he initially criticized Go for his silence on issues plaguing Davao City.

In response, Senator Go took to Facebook to reaffirm his loyalty to the Duterte family and the people of Davao.

Emphasizing his roots as a Davaoeño and his commitment to the welfare of Filipinos, Go argued there is a time for everything, and the current moment calls for prioritizing the nation’s needs over political grandstanding. Exploring Go’s retort

Senator Go’s response was measured, focusing on his longstanding commitment to public service rather than engaging in a titfor-tat with Mayor Duterte.

Here are several reasons why Go’s stance is commendable:

1. Focus on Public Welfare: Go’s emphasis on prioritizing the welfare of the Filipino people over personal or political battles demonstrates a commendable dedication to his constituents.

In an era where political figures often prioritize self-promotion, Go’s message serves as a refreshing reminder of the essence of public service.

2. Avoiding political infighting: By choosing not to escalate the conflict with Mayor Duterte, Go maintains a level of decorum and stability.

Political infighting can be detrimental, distracting leaders from their primary responsibilities and sowing discord among supporters.

3. Loyalty and consistency: Go’s consistent support for the Duterte family, despite the criticism, reflects a loyalty that is rare

issues. The East Bay Water Treatment Plant in Pakil, Laguna, and the Tseun Kwan O Desalination Plant in Hong Kong highlight ACCIONA’s advanced solutions for water scarcity. Through ACCIONA Energía, the company acquired an 80% stake in Freya Renewables, adding 880MW of renewable energy projects, including a 150MW solar plant in Daanbantayan, Cebu, the nation’s first public-private partnership in solar power.

ACCIONA is also developing a 156MW wind farm in Pantabangan, Nueva Ecija, and constructing the 100MW Kalayaan 2 wind farm in Laguna Province.

These initiatives support the national goal of increasing renewable energy to 35 percent by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040, reducing reliance on imported fossil fuels.

The impact of ACCIONA’s investments extends beyond infrastructure improvements.

The SIM Registration Act, or Republic Act 11934, the first law signed by President Marcos Jr., was intended to reduce, if not eliminate, scams committed through text or online messages by identifying SIM card owners or users. Thus, it eliminated the anonymity that had previously made it easier to carry out scams using a mobile phone. RA 11934 makes providing false or fictitious information when registering an offense punishable by imprisonment of six months to two years, a fine of up to P300,000, or both.

For fraudulently using a registered SIM card, the punishment includes jail time of at least six years or a fine of P200,000, or both.

“[In] light of these recent developments and discoveries, the NTC shall continue to tighten its regulations pertaining to SIM registration to the fullest extent allowed under the existing law,” the agency vowed. We believe the NTC should now proactively work with law enforcement agencies to investigate rising cases of text scams. Apart from this, it should conduct public information and awareness campaigns to educate Filipinos, to avoid making SIM registration a colossal waste of time for millions of subscribers.

The Baste Duterte-Bong Go showdown

in the political arena. His allegiance to the former president and his commitment to Davao City highlight a sense of duty that goes beyond personal gain.

4. Focus on action over words: Go’s track record of hands-on public service, often seen in his numerous community engagements and aid distribution activities, underscores his preference for action over rhetoric.

This practical approach resonates well with many Filipinos who value tangible results over political speeches.

Critiquing Duterte’s call-out

Mayor Duterte’s public call-out of Senator Go raises several concerns:

1. Public discord: Publicly attacking an ally can create unnecessary division and weaken the collective strength needed to address the challenges facing Davao City.

The road ahead requires unity, dedication, and a shared vision for a better future

Unity among local leaders is crucial, especially in times of crisis.

2. Misplaced priorities: Focusing on Go’s political stance and use of social media for publicity detracts from addressing the pressing issues in Davao City.

Constructive dialogue and collaboration would be more beneficial than public disparagement.

3. Potential political motives: While Mayor Duterte’s concern for Davao City’s issues is valid, the manner of his criticism suggests potential underlying political motives.

Such public confrontations can be perceived as attempts to assert dominance or shift blame, rather than genuine calls for action.

Speculating on hidden motives

Aside from the stated reasons, several possible motivations might be driving Mayor Duterte’s criticisms: 1. Political ambitions: Mayor Duterte

These projects create thousands of quality green jobs, promoting sustainable economic development and upskilling our workforce.

Local businesses benefit from supply chain opportunities and capability-building, fostering a more robust and self-reliant economy.

The successful performance and longterm commitments of ACCIONA are a confidence booster for potential investors, attracting more foreign direct investments into the Philippines.

This influx of investments further propels our economic growth, making our nation more competitive on the global stage.

ACCIONA’s social responsibility shines through initiatives like the “Light at Home” program, which provides solar home systems to underserved households in Palawan.

This offers reliable, clean power, enhancing economic opportunities and community services while reducing health hazards from polluting lamps, ensuring even remote com-

might be positioning himself as a more assertive leader in preparation for future political endeavors.

By challenging Go, he could be attempting to solidify his image as a strong, independent figure.

2. Influence and control: The Duterte family’s political influence in Davao is substantial.

Criticizing Go could be an attempt to reassert the family’s control and influence over the city’s political narrative.

3. Deflecting attention: The public callout could also be a strategy to deflect attention from other issues or criticisms directed at Mayor Duterte’s administration. Call for unity

Despite their differences, it is imperative for Mayor Duterte and Senator Go to find common ground.

The well-being of Davao City and the country depends on the collaboration and unity of its leaders.

Some recommendations to bridge the gap:

1. Private dialogue: Instead of airing grievances publicly, both leaders should engage in private discussions to address their differences and find common solutions for the city’s issues.

2. Joint initiatives: Collaborating on joint initiatives could help rebuild trust and demonstrate their shared commitment to Davao City’s development.

3. Focus on common goals: Emphasizing their common goals, like improving public welfare and addressing local issues, can help both leaders redirect their energies towards constructive actions.

4. Mediation: Involving a neutral mediator, perhaps a respected elder or leader within their circle, could facilitate a more productive conversation and resolution. The public feud between Mayor Duterte and Senator Go highlights the complexities and challenges within Philippine politics. While differences in opinion and strategy are natural, the focus should always remain on serving the people.

Both leaders have the potential to drive significant positive change in Davao City and beyond, but only if they choose collaboration over conflict.

The road ahead requires unity, dedication, and a shared vision for a better future.

munities’ benefit. Additionally, ACCIONA’s proposed livelihood training program with the Public Employment Service Office of Mabalacat City targets unemployed or underemployed women who are solo parents or breadwinners. It provides skills in housekeeping and personal development, empowering women and promoting inclusivity, gender equality, and economic independence.

As Filipino consumers, we have been longing for the transformative impacts of these innovative projects and have the shared aspiration to live a brighter, more inclusive, and sustainable future.

Collaboration between the government and the private sector is crucial to realizing these benefits.

It is imperative for both the government and private sector to work together to build a more connected, efficient, resilient, and prosperous Philippines.

4PS party-list Rep. Marcelino Libanan on

Sunday called on the Department of Budget and Management (DBM) to include funding for extra cash grants in the 2025 general appropriations bill for pregnant and lactating mothers.

He said he sees the Philippines losing fewer mothers and newborns as a result of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s decision to give supplemental cash assistance to pregnant and lactating women under the government’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps).

Merchant ship damaged by drone hit in Red Sea

DUBAI – A merchant ship was damaged by a drone attack in the Red Sea near Yemen early Sunday morning, though no injuries were reported, according to a British maritime security agency.

Vessels in and around the Red Sea have come under repeated attack for months by Iran-backed Huthi rebels in Yemen who say they are acting in support of Palestinians during the Israel-Hamas war in the Gaza Strip. The attack occurred about 120 kilometers west of the Yemeni port city of Hodeida, said the United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations, which is run by the British navy.

“The Master of a merchant vessel reports being hit by uncrewed aerial system (UAS), resulting in damage to the vessel. All crew members are reported safe, and the vessel is proceeding to its next port of call,” said a bulletin from the agency. “Authorities are investigating,” it added, offering no attribution for the attack. 13 arrested after fireworks trigger fire

ATHENS – Greek authorities have arrested 13 people after fireworks launched from a yacht set off a new wildfire on an island near Athens as the country confronts a new season of deadly summer fires. The mayor of the island of Hydra expressed “outrage” after the fire was started late Friday and vowed legal action against those responsible.

Dozens of wildfires in Greece this week have left at least one person dead already. The latest blaze was “caused by fireworks launched from a boat and burned the only pine forest on the island in a place that is difficult to access and has no road,” Hydra’s firefighting team said on Facebook.

Thirteen people accused of involvement in the fireworks have been arrested after a fire service inquiry and will be presented before a prosecutor on Sunday, said a

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Western Visayas has successfully distributed a total of P147.27 million worth of food and non-food items to families affected by various calamities across the region from January 1 to June 20.

According to Erlyn L. Garcia, chief of the DSWD 6 Disaster Risk Management Division, the majority of the assistance was directed to families impacted by the El Niño phenomenon and the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon in Negros Occidental. Garcia noted that these events required a substantial response to address the immediate needs of the affected populations.

Data from DSWD 6 reveal that 204,071 family food packs, valued at P138.65 million, were distributed to families suffering from the effects of El Niño. Additionally, 3,334 food packs worth P2.07 million were provided to those affected by the volcanic eruption of Mt. Kanlaon.

The remaining assistance was allocated to families affected by armed conflicts, fires, and oil spills.

In addition to food items, the agency distributed 3,606 non-food items valued at P5.77 million. Of these, P4 million worth of non-food items were specifically directed to families impacted by the volcanic eruption, highlighting the agency’s comprehensive approach to disaster response.

Garcia also emphasized that there are still ample supplies of food and non-food items stored in DSWD 6 warehouses located in Oton, Iloilo, and Bacolod City, along with prepositioned goods at 24 sites across the region.

“We have sufficient food packs and non-food items. We can request anytime from the National Logistics Resource Management Bureau,” Garcia stated, indicating the region’s preparedness to handle future calamities.

Gaza claims 24 killed in strikes

ALESTINIAN Territories – Health officials in Gaza said Israeli air strikes on Saturday killed at least 24 people in the territory’s north, a day after the International Committee of the Red Cross said 22 people were killed in shelling

The Gaza City strikes added to at least 120 deaths over the previous 48 hours which the health ministry in Hamas-run Gaza reported earlier during the weekend.

Hundreds of people die every year in India from cheap alcohol made in backstreet distilleries, but this poisoning is one of the worst in recent years.

To increase its potency, the liquor is often spiked with methanol which can cause blindness, liver damage and death.

The Indian Express newspaper on Sunday quoted a local councillor, Palraj, describing how poor laborers in Kallakurichi district regularly bought the liquor in plastic bags costing 60 rupees ($0.70), which they would drink before work. Some went blind and were rushed to hospital.

Others died rapidly, collapsing in the street.

Nueva Ecija grabs share of top spot

NUEVA Ecija routed Bataan, 85-70, on Friday to share the lead in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Sixth Season at the Calasiao Sports Complex in Pangasinan.

The Nueva Ecija Rice Vanguards posted their 12th straight win in as many starts, shoving them at the helm with the Quezon Huskers in the round-robin elimination phase of the 29-team tournament.

Defending champion Pampanga battered Bulacan, 124-81, in the opener while Quezon City nipped Pangasinan, 78-74, in the nightcap. Led by Chris Bitoon, the 2022 MPBL titlist Rice Vanguards pulled away at 60-42 and were never headed by the Risers, who fell to 4-10.

Bitoon, who posted 14 points, 7 assists, 2 steals and 2 rebounds, was backed by John Bryon Villarias with 11 points, 4 rebounds and 2 assists, Will McAloney with 11 points and 6 rebounds, and Rob Celiz, JB Bahio and Emman Calo with 10 points each.

Bataan got 18 points and 8 rebounds from Mitchelle Maynes and 12 points from James Castro.

Pampanga, with seven Giant Lanterns posting twin digits, zoomed beyond reach, 118-72, for its 13th straight win after an initial loss. Kurt Spencer Reyson submitted a triple-double of 15 points, 12 rebounds and 11 assists to go with 4 steals, but it was his fellow Giant Lantern Archie Concepcion who earned best player honors after barely missing a triple-double with 19 points, 13 rebounds and 9 assists.

Other Giant Lanterns who shone were Jeff Viernes with 18 points, 7 rebounds and 3 steals, homegrown Ronan Santos with 15 points and 6 rebounds, Jhaymo Eguilos with 10 points, 5 rebounds, 2 assists, plus 2 blocks, and Lervin Flores with 10 points, 9 rebounds and 4 assists.

Yulo can win gold with perfect landing in floor exercises—Carrion

AGOLD medal at the most or a podium finish at the least is in store for Filipino gymnast Carlos Yulo.

Gymnastics Association of the Philippines president Cynthia Carrion said this is what’s waiting for the 24-year-old Yulo in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

To get a medal, Yulo will need to focus on his preparations in the floor exercises.

“Carlos can possibly win a gold. He is an all-arounder. If he sticks (make a perfect landing) it in the floor, he can win,” said Carrion.

Yulo has promised to give it his best, when he seeks a podium finish in the Olympiad. And he is polishing

his moves and will be more prepared this time around.

In the Tokyo Olympics, Yulo came up empty handed in his fave event, the floor exercises, and was fourth in the vault.

Yulo is set to leave for the Metz’ Training Camp on June 29 and was not part of the first batch of delegates that left for France last Saturday.

His continuous preparations saw him competing at the 2024 Men’s Artistic Gymnastics Asian Championships, where he finished with four gold medals last month, ruling the vault and the parallel bars on the final day at the Gymnastics Sport Palace in Tashkent, Uzbekistan

Filipinas team manager Cheng quits

JEFFERSON Cheng has stepped down from his role as team manager of the Philippine Women’s National Football Team.

Cheng, who is considered as one of the most successful managers in the sport of football, said he is quitting from his duties due to conflicts of interest.

“Last Thursday, I informed the PFF Director of National Teams that I am stepping away from my role as Team Manager of the women’s team,” said Cheng in a statement.

Under Cheng’s watch, Philippine women’s football experienced new highs in the ASEAN, Asian and world stages.

Coaches Marlon Maro and Alen Stajcic steered the Filipinas to successful runs in the 2022 AFC Women’s Asian Cup in India.

The Filipinas also secured a spot in the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

“For several months, we tried our best to make things work under new and very different circumstances. Unfortunately, the situation is not workable,” added Cheng.

With Stajcic as coach, the Filipinas snared a bronze medal in the 31st Southeast Asian Games in Vietnam and won the 2022 AFF Women’s

Richardson wins 100m to qualify for Olympics

EUGENE—World 100 meters champion

Sha’Carri Richardson earned a chance for Olympic redemption after winning the 100m at the US athletics trials on Saturday, booking her ticket to the Paris Games.

Three years after a positive marijuana test saw her kicked off the US team for the Tokyo Olympics, Richardson captured the women’s 100 final in 10.71sec with Melissa Jefferson second in 10.80 and Twanisha Terry third in 10.89. Richardson surged to the lead in the middle of the race and crossed the finish line in this year’s world-best time with a wind of 0.8m/ sec at Hayward Field in Eugene, Oregon.

“I feel honored,” Richardson said. “I feel every chapter I’ve been through in my life designed and prepared me for this moment.

“I cannot wait to go to Paris and represent.”

Reigning men’s 100m world champion Noah Lyles began his quest for Olympic gold in the event by leading all semi-final qualifi-

ers from men’s preliminary heats in 9.92. Richardson hopes to capture Olympic gold in the 100 final at the Stade de France on August 3.

Not since Gail Devers in 1996 has an American woman been crowned an Olympic 100m champion.

The 24-year-old Texan won her preliminary heat on Friday in 10.88, leading all qualifiers despite a slight stumble at the start, and won her Saturday semi-final in 10.86, the best time of any finalist despite a slow start.

She was behind again at the start but quickly made up the time and charged to victory.

“Definitely didn’t have the best start, but had a better start than my other rounds,” Richardson said.

Three years ago, Richardson appeared set for the pandemic-delayed Tokyo Olympics after winning at the US trials in 10.86.

But dreams of Olympic gold were shattered when it was revealed she had tested positive for marijuana, resulting in a one-month sus-

THREE talented golfers from the Mindanao region are set to leave their mark as they compete against local and regional contenders in the ICTSI Junior PGT Bacolod Visayas Series starting today (Monday, June 24) at the Bacolod Golf and Country Club in Binitin, Murcia.

Keith Pagalan, Simon Wahing and Coby Langamin will add excitement to the boys’ premier 16-18 age category, eager to showcase their skills in the first of two Bacolod tournaments that form part of the three-leg JPGT Visayas Series, which kicked off last week in Iloilo.

Winners from four age divisions (boys and girls) are all part of the Bacolod roster, vying not just for consecutive victories but also for ranking points in their quest to secure spots in the national match play finals in October after the 14-leg nationwide circuit organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc.

Bacolod’s John Rey Oro and Iloilo’s Rhiena Sinfuego aim for back-to-back wins in the 16-18 class, which will be contested over 72 holes. Inno Flores and Alexie Gabi strive for similar success in the 13-15 division, spanning 54 holes. Kurt Flores and Cailey Gonzales (10-12) and Kvan Alburo and Eliana Mendoza (8-9) will compete over 36 holes.

The spotlight, however, will be on Pagalan and his teammates from Manolo Fortich High School in Bukidnon as they set out to demonstrate their worth

pension that banned her from Tokyo. Plans to revive her career at the 2022 World Championships failed when she bombed out of the US trials.

Richardson, however, roared back into form in 2023 with a thrilling 100m triumph at the World Championships in Bu dapest, taking the crown in a championship record of 10.65sec.

This year, Richard son won her only prior 100 at May’s Prefontaine Clas sic in Eugene in 10.83.

Lyles cruised to victory in the first of five 100m men’s heats with Christian Coleman, the 2019 100m world champion, second in 9.99.

while preparing for the four-leg JPGT Mindanao Series starting next month. Adding to the competition in the

boys’ centerpiece division is Cavite’s Patrick Tambalque, a category winner in last year’s JPGT nation -

al finals. Tambalque, who tied for fourth in the Luzon Series’ first leg at Splendido Taal, is expected to be a strong contender throughout the tournament, designed to nurture young talent and promote camaraderie among participants.

The JPGT operates independently from other junior golf organizations, ensuring no scheduling conflicts and fostering a cooperate atmosphere, allowing for a well-organized and focused series that enhances the experience of all participants and supports their development in the sport.

Sinfuego, meanwhile, anticipates a spirited challenge from Evonne Gotiong, Mikaela Ledesma, Jamela Robles, Breanna Rojas, and her friend Necky Tortosa. Meanwhile, Gabi and Flores are preparing for tough competition against well-prepared rosters in the girls’ and boys’ 13-15 class. The younger categories (8-9 and 1012) also promise intense competition, with each player confident yet wary of the opposition and the course that will test not only their shot-making skills but also their poise and composure under pressure.

The next Bacolod tournament is scheduled for July 1-4 at the longer, more challenging Negros Occidental Golf and Country Club course, the former Marapara layout, in Bata Subdivision. Registration is ongoing. For details, contact

SMC vows to submit documents to pursue Pasig River Expressway

SAN Miguel Corp. is pursuing its P81.53billion proposal to build the Pasig River Expressway (PAREX), according to the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB).

The TRB said PAREX is still a “live” project after San Miguel agreed to comply with the requirements and

IN BRIEF

address environmental issues.

“San Miguel wrote that they will comply with the requirements vis a vis environmental clearance certificate. As of now, they are not abandoning the project. As of now, it is a live project,” TRB executive director

Alvin Carullo said.

San Miguel Corp. president Ramon Ang said in March the PAREX project would not push through because of the concerns raised by some environmental and conservation advocates.

Carullo said the conglomerate has until October to submit the documents for the TRB. “They have to submit a

final engineering drawings or FED certified by an independent consultant. The deadline for submission was postponed until October. So come October, they have to come up with the FED and submit it to TRB,” he said.

Carullo said once approved, the construction of the PAREX may start by 2025.

PAREX is a proposed 19.37-kilometer, six-lane elevated expressway which would traverse the Pasig River from Radial Road 10 in Manila to its connection with the proposed South East Metro Manila Expressway at Circumferential Road 6.

It will connect and utilize a 2.7-km. portion of Skyway Stage 3 from Nagtahan to Plaza Azul.

San Miguel earlier said it invested P2 billion to clean up the Pasig River and integrate a bus rapid transit system, bicycle lanes and pedestrian walkways in the project.

San Miguel built and manages several expressways including the Tarlac-Pangasinan-La Union Expressway (TPLEX), the Southern Tagalog Arterial Road (STAR), South Luzon Expressway (SLEX), the Skyway System and the NAIA Expressway (NAIAX).

Andrew Tan master builder of Megaworld townships

POWER PROFILE

ANDREW Lim Tan did a part-time job in a transistor radio factory where his father also worked, walked to and from school, ate banana cue for lunch and sold items to help in the family finances.

He was born in Quanzhou, Fujian province, China in 1952, but the family moved to Hong Kong when he was still a boy in search of the proverbial greener pasture.

This roughly summed up the humble beginnings for the Tan family who migrated to the Philippines from Hong Kong when Andrew was 16 due to the high cost of living in the Crown Colony. They rented a small apartment in Sta. Cruz, Manila, uncertain of what lied ahead for them.

As a student at the University of the East where he graduated cum laude in Business Administration in 1974, Andrew dreamt of having his own grocery store, but ended up later in life as the fifth richest man in his adopted country.

He briefly worked for the late taipan, industrialist and banker Leonardo Ty. In 1977, he ventured into home appliance business, and two years later, he acquired Emperador brandy.

There was no looking back from there, and his business endeavors morphed into an empire.

Today, he is the chairman of the Alliance Global Group Inc. and Megaworld Corp., with a net worth estimated at $2.5 billion as he turned 71.

From a modest start-up, Megaworld grew by leaps and bounds to be one of the leading residential and commercial real estate companies in the country. Alliance Global is a holding company with diverse exposures in food and beverage and gaming, with its flagship brandy company Emperador.

After the EDSA People Power revolution, Tan mulled going into real estate development, thus Megaworld came into existence, The firm engaged in condominium projects, eventually becoming a leader in residential and commercial development in the country.

With Tan at the driver’s seat, Megaworld went into master-planned townships by the mid-1990s, giving rise to Eastwood City in Barangay Bagumbayan, Quezon City, built with the concept “live, work and play” in mind. Eastwood eventually gained the distinction “first cyberpark” in the country.

Megaworld’s mixed-use townships format subsequently sailed across the archipelago, The concept introduced a harmonious blend of schools, commercial hubs, offices and homes covering more than 4,000 hectares nationwide.

BCDA signs deal for cable car system in Baguio

STATE-RUN Bases Conversion and Development Authority (BCDA) said over the weekend it signed two agreements with Japanese organizations for smart and sustainable growth of the John Hay Special Economic Zone and New Clark City during a high-profile visit to Tokyo.

The first deal is a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with Zip Infrastructure Co. Ltd. to test and possibly undertake a self-driven cable car system at Camp John Hay.

“This technology promises to enhance urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion and promote environmentally sustainable transportation solutions. By leveraging Zippar technology, we can create a seamless and efficient transport system within Camp John Hay, making it more accessible and enjoyable for residents and visitors alike,” said BCDA president and chief executive Joshua Bingcang after the agreement signing with Zip Infrastructure chief

executive Takamasa Suchi. Zip Infrastructure will conduct a feasibility study for a system called Zippar to determine the viability of an alternative transportation solution, alleviating traffic congestion and enhancing accessibility within Camp John Hay.

BCDA also signed a three-year partnership with the Organization for PublicPrivate Partnerships Promotion Support (OPPS) of Japan to attract more Japanese investment in New Clark City and other BCDA economic zones.

Bingcang and OPPS director and vice president Kimikazu Uemura signed the agreement. “OPPS as a steadfast advocate for BCDA’s projects, and leveraging on your Japanese network and expertise to attract investment and foster international partnerships will be crucial and invaluable in raising awareness about the opportunities available in New Clark City and in facilitating collaborations with global stakeholders,” Bingcang said.

“We are keeping up to the changing times. Just this year, we launched iTownships, a campaign that is intended to guide us in future-proofing our townships. The campaign allows us to create ‘future-ready’ communities by integrating innovative design, safety, smart technology, connectivity, and energy efficiency into our develop ments,” Tan said in an interview.

“Time has become more and more limited for today’s consum ers. People want to experience everything—shopping, dining, relaxation, entertainment and learning, among others—within the very community where they live and work,” he said.

Tan also founded Alliance Global in the mid-1990s, with investments in food and beverage, real estate, gaming and fast-food chain. These included Resorts World Manila, Emperador Distillers Inc., Mega world, Empire East Land Holdings Inc., Golden Arches Development Corp., Travelers International Ho tel Group, Inc. and Suntrust Prop erties Inc. Hotels such as Rich mond, Marriott and Sheraton are also under the Alliance Global.

To keep his body in good shape, Tan swims and spends time at the gym whenever opportunity allows. Tan is married to Katherine Tan, a philanthropist in her own right. But she is also in the family’s businesses, sitting as a board member in some of them. They have four children. Kevin, the oldest, now sits as the CEO of Alliance Global and chief strategy of Megaworld, while Kendrick, serves as executive director of Emperador.

LTFRB MOVE IT said over the weekend it would cooperate with the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) and the Philippine National Police (PNP) to identify further safety measures to protect commuters and the public from criminals. The motorcycle taxi company’s move came after one of its drivers was found to have allegedly been involved in a robbery in San Juan City last week. Move It general manager Wayne Jacinto said the two-wheeled ride-hailing company is “aware that there is always a possibility that unscrupulous individuals could join Move It or use our uniforms, with the end in view of concealing their intention to commit crimes.” “We assure the public that if Move It riders are indeed involved in any wrongdoing, we will be transparent about it, and we will utilize the technology in our app to trace the guilty parties so that they can be held accountable for their crimes,” said Jacinto. He said that in the case of the San Juan robbery, the assistance extended by the motorcycle taxi company to police led to the identification and eventual capture of the suspects. “When we received reports that an alleged Move It rider was involved in a crime, we immediately communicated with the PNP and worked to validate if the individual using a Move It uniform was one of our riders,” said Jacinto. MPTC to sign major Indonesian investment this week

METRO Pacific Tollways Corp. said over the weekend it is set to sign a deal to acquire a 35-percent stake in Jasa Marga Transjawa Tol (JTT), an Indonesian state-owned toll road operator this week in Jakarta. MONDAY, JUNE

“They are in final documentation. Few changes are still happening,” MPTC chairman Manuel Pangilinan told reporters.

“There’s always issues on documentation, last minute. Remember, Jasa Marga is a state-owned enterprise. They have their own systems of approval. It takes a bit more time than the private sector,” he said.

MPTC chief finance officer Chris Lizo earlier said the estimated value of the 35-percent stake in JTT between $1 billion and $1.5 billion. Pangilinan expects JTT to contribute about P30 billion per year to the company. JTT has the largest connected toll road network in Java with an estimated 750,000 to 800,000 vehicles per day. It operates 13 toll sections spanning 676 kilometers. MPTC teamed up with Singapore sovereign fund GIC for the acquisition of the stake in Jasamarga. Under the proposed partnership, MPTC’s Indonesian subsidiary will acquire 20.3 percent of the 35 percent to be purchased, while GIC will own 10.3 percent. MPTC-led PT Margautama Nusantara will take the remaining 4.2 percent.

Yokohama plans to expand tire production in PH

LEADING Japanese tire manufacturer Yokohama Rubber Co. Ltd. disclosed plans to expand production operations in the Philippines.

Trade Secretary Alfredo Pascual said the tire manufacturer expressed its commitment to expansion during the final day of the threeday Philippine Economic Briefing in Tokyo on June 19 to 21, 2023.

“The Philippines is dedicated to enhancing its investment climate through various policy reforms and infrastructure development. Our ongoing efforts aim to attract more foreign investments, which are crucial for sustaining our economic growth and development,” Pascual said.

He noted Yokohama’s contributions to the local economy, particularly through the localization of natural rubber procurement, which significantly benefited Filipino farmers and rubber processors in Mindanao.

The Philippines committed to address issues raised by tire company, including VAT incentives, power infrastructure and labor issues.

The Philippines-Japan economic relationship remains one of the strongest in Asia, with Japan being the Philippines’ second-largest trading partner and third-largest source of approved investments in 2023.

“Yokohama Rubber’s expansion plans in the Philippines are a testament to the robust economic partnership between our countries and the confidence Japanese investors have in the Philippines,” Pascual said.

Office market booms outside Metro Manila

THE office market beyond Metro Manila continues to boom as business process outsourcing (BPO) firms expand to access a diverse and highly skilled talent pool in key provincial cities, according to real estate brokerage and consultancy firm KMC Savills.

In its latest report, KMC Savills noted that cities like Iloilo, Cebu, Clark, Davao and Bacolod are thriving hubs for BPO firms, with the total upcoming office space supply in regional cities expected to reach 335,000 square meters by 2025.

“The regional office market remains promising due to growing demand from IT-BPM firms, particularly in areas with accessible and reliable talent pools such as Metro Cebu and Metro Clark,” KMC Savills said.

Iloilo: Hotspot for BPO

KMC Savills highlighted Iloilo’s remarkable expansion, accounting for 50 percent of the upcoming 335,000 sq. m. of office supply. With its rapid growth, Iloilo is poised to surpass Davao in terms of office supply,

although Clark remains the leader.

Iloilo has a total office stock of 210,000 sq. m., with an upcoming supply of 167,000 sq. m. Davao offers 231,000 sq. m. of office space with an upcoming stock of 22,000 sq. m. Clark has a current office supply of 457,000 sq. m., with an additional 35,000 sq. m. to come.

Office vacancy rates in Iloilo reached 4.7 percent in the second half of 2023, compared to 6.4 percent in Davao and 30 percent in Clark. “Overall, Iloilo maintained its leadership among regional cities despite a decrease in rental rates to P617 per square meter by the end of 2023,” KMC Savills said.

The rising supply in Iloilo is expected to temporarily lower rental

rates until excess stock is absorbed.

Meanwhile, office rental rates in Cebu rebounded from a dip in 2022 largely due to lack of new launches in the province. Rental rates in Cebu increased 3.8 percent in 2023 to P550 per sq. m., up from P526 the previous year.

NCR vacancy rate

The vacancy rate in Metro Manila is expected to remain in double digits this year amid an influx of new office spaces by mid-year. About 529,000 sq. m. of office space are expected to be completed in 2024.

With increasing office demand from the BPO industry and traditional offices, KMC Savills anticipates a decline in office vacancies over the medium term. Several key business districts in Metro Manila including Makati, Ortigas, Bay Area and the C5 corridor reported lower vacancy rates in the first quarter of 2024 compared to the fourth quarter of 2023.

Average rental rates in Metro Manila are also projected to remain stable at P850 to P860 per sq. m. for the remainder of 2024, with potential variations in areas experiencing high vacancy rates.

completion in 2025. Azure North, an eight-hectare development, builds on the success of the Azure Urban Resort Residences in the South, bringing the appeal of a coastal haven to a new market. A key attraction of Azure North, the first of its kind in the North of Metro Manila, is its manmade beach with a white sand lagoon and an inviting wave pool, alongside an exclusive clubhouse. This innovative concept transforms urban living, providing an accessible luxury retreat for residents and short-term guests alike. The property is strategically located right by the San Fernando exit of the North Luzon Expressway and near major malls, commercial establishments, and Clark International Airport.

MANILA CELEBRATES 453RD FOUNDING ANNIVERSARY

THE city of Manila kicked off its 453rd founding anniversary with a series of vibrant events, including the highly successful ‘Tunog Maynila’ concert and the ‘Kasalang Bayan 2024,’ highlighting the city’s festive spirit and dedication to its community.

Despite the rain that day, a large number of Manileños attended the free concert “Tunog Maynila,” taking in performances honoring the rich cultural legacy of the city.

The events, which served as a prelude to the major celebration of “Araw ng Maynila” today, June 24, 2024, were personally led by Manila Mayor Honey Lacuna and Vice Mayor Yul Servo.

Mayor Lacuna expressed her joy at seeing the crowd’s energy and resilience despite the rain, saying, “The spirit of Manila is truly alive and vibrant, no matter the weather.”

In another significant event, 253 couples were united in matrimony through the ‘Kasalang Bayan 2024,’ either in civil rites or in church.

During the reception, Mayor Lacuna urged the newlyweds to be responsible in their decision to marry and to work hard to make their marriages successful. She also called on the sponsors to guide and support the couples in their journey.

“I want everyone here, especially the couples getting married, to understand that this ceremony, officiated by the city mayor, is legal and valid. I hope your love for each other continues to grow. To the sponsors, please guide and help the newlyweds to ensure a beautiful union,” Lacuna stated.

Adding to the celebrations, the city government recognized its long-serving employees at the City Service Loyalty Awards held at The Metropolitan Theater last June 13.

Mayor Lacuna and Vice Mayor Servo honored 263 employees with 25 years of service, 158 with 30 years, 52 with 35 years, and 12 with 40 years of service.

Additionally, 11 awardees with more than 40 years of service were recognized as they approached compulsory retirement.

Felimon G. Sanchez from the Department of Engineering and Public Works was the top awardee, honored for his remarkable 45 years of service to the city.

The festivities and recognitions underscore the city government’s appreciation for the dedication and loyalty of its employees, as well as its commitment to celebrating the culture and unity of Manila.

As the city gears up for the main ‘Araw ng Maynila’ celebration, these events have set a spirited tone for what promises to be a grand commemoration of Manila’s storied history.

Barbie and David take love team on the big screen with first date movie

FROM their unexpected pairing in the hit series Maria Clara at Ibarra , Barbie Forteza and David Licauco , known to their fans as BarDa , are bringing excitement back to theaters with their fi rst movie together.

Titled That Kind of Love and directed by Catherine Camarillo, this romantic date movie seeks to showcase why BarDa has won the hearts of many and how their chemistry translates to the big screen. At a press conference for the film, Barbie shared insights on how the movie offers a new dimension to their partnership.

“David and I have grown significantly as actors. On TV, our performances span many episodes. The film, however, captures the same essence within a limited timeframe,” Barbie explained.

The 26-year-old actress pointed out the movie’s production quality and how it enhanced their performances

to be more cinematic.

“Experiencing BarDa in this film will be unique because we’ve matured as actors. Our style, characters, and appearances reflect this growth. And we thank our director and the movie itself for making that appear on the screen,” she added.

The film aims to rekindle the magic of watching movies in theaters according to Barbie. They hope That Kind of Love will inspire audiences to revisit cinemas while “falling in love in the process.”

“Watching movies in theaters used to be a wonderful experience. We want to encourage people to enjoy local films in theaters again. Iba naman kasi talaga ang experience sa sinehan, and the movie will help them fall in love and perhaps rekindle the romance in their life,” she said.

In speaking of romance, David and Barbie were put on the spot during the press conference due to persistent questions linking them romantically. Though not romantically involved off-screen, David attributes their success as a love team to their professionalism.

“Acting with Barbie is effortless because she’s such a talented actress. It feels like we’re truly in love when we act together,” David shared.

Barbie also discussed the pressure of maintaining their love team’s success. “Our pairing was unexpected,

BRITISH rock band Coldplay has revealed details about its tenth studio album, Moon Music , set to hit stores and streaming platforms on Oct. 4.

Produced by Max Martin, the album marks Coldplay’s return since its 2021 release, Music Of The Spheres The announcement was accompanied by the global release of the album’s first single, “feelslikeimfallinginlove,” which premiered during the band’s sold-out stadium performance at Budapest’s Puskás Aréna. Fans can pre-save the

single ahead of its global release on Friday, June 21. Coldplay has also introduced new formats for the physical release of Moon Music. The album will be the world’s first to be released on 140g EcoRecord LPs, each made from nine recycled PET-plastic bottles. This innovation is expected to prevent over 25 metric tonnes of virgin plastic and significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to traditional vinyl production. Moreover, Coldplay has collaborated with The Ocean Cleanup to create a special “Notebook Edition

EcoRecord LP,” using rPET comprising 70 percent river plastic intercepted from Guatemala’s Rio Las Vacas. This edition underscores the band’s commitment to environmental stewardship and ocean conservation efforts. For CD editions, Moon Music will feature EcoCDs made from 90 percent recycled polycarbonate, further reducing carbon emissions and minimizing plastic waste. In a bid to maintain exclusivity and minimize environmental impact, the first edition release of both EcoRecord LPs and EcoCDs will be strictly limited and crafted to the highest standards. Each EcoRecord LP in this first edition will be individually numbered, adding to its collectible appeal. Fans can now pre-order Moon Music in various formats, including the special Notebook Edition that replicates Chris Martin ’s original studio notebook. This edition offers a unique glimpse into the album’s creative process with unseen notes, lyrics, illustrations, and exclusive voice notes and demos from the recording sessions. Coldplay’s commitment to sustainability extends beyond their music production to their ongoing tour, which has already achieved a 59 percent reduction in CO2e emissions compared to previous stadium tours. Moon Music is available for preorder globally, including limited hand-signed editions, through Coldplay’s official store at store. coldplay.com.

TAKING a cue from the long narrative of The Thousand and One Nights, made famous by the fictional Scheherezade of Samarkand, here goes the continuation of my narrative on my activities in this beautiful and culturally rich city. Being an important center for Islamic culture and scholarship, plus having an abundance of exotic arts and crafts, the city earned the moniker, “The Eden Of The East” way before that absurd Japanese anime TV series of the same name hit the limelight.

Our second day’s tour brought us to the very interesting Afrosiyab Museum which has artifacts from one of the

largest archaeological sites in the world. Afrosiyab was an ancient city, destroyed by the Mongols in the 13th century, from which Samarkand evolved.

Named after a mythical king and hero, the museum details the story of the founding of Samarkand, not only through precious artifacts found during the excavations but also through uniquely preserved murals from the Samarkand Palace.

We also had the chance to visit another ancient city in Uzbekistan--Bukhara was a prominent stop on the Silk Road trade route and a major medieval center for Islamic theology and culture. The visit lasted the whole

day because it took us 4 hours to reach there from Samarkand, but what we saw made the long trip well worth it. The city still has well-preserved mosques, madrassahs, and bazaars that date back to as early as the 9th century. It was like I was in a time travel to the past. Everything around me was exactly what I saw in movies with Biblical themes. It was surreal.

The landmarks of particular interest include the tomb of Ismail Samani, an awesome masterpiece of 10th century Muslim architecture, as you can see in the photo on this page. Its walls’ intricate design makes you think it’s a fully embroidered item when seen from a distance. I also found the city’s trading domes unique. In the olden days, these domes were bustling trading centers in the city, each specializing in different goods. Today, these domes are marketplaces selling anything and everything. Back in Samarkand, I was given a choice to discover more of the city by availing of the In. Visible Samarkand tour package, described as an immersive performance excursion. It sounded very interesting because you’d be given earphones to guide you to the city’s very interesting but hardto-find local color, through a 100-minute verbally annotated journey. But when I found out I had to walk all the way, I turned it down. Not only do I get tired easily when walking, but the current temperature in Samarkand is like Manila’s, ranging from 38 to 42 degrees. Another stop in our tour which I

and businessman soon opened a winery and immediately progressed through many decades. Khovrenko Winery is the oldest in Central Asia. It has a tasting room in a historical 19th century building, the house of its founder, where you are served four white wines, four red wines, and two cognacs, together with crackers and cheese. It was indeed a pleasant way to end a sightseeing tour. Thanks to FIA’s (Federation Internationale de l’Automobile) invitation to its 120th anniversary, my friends and I also had a chance to dine at the city’s most expensive restaurant, the Mo’Jiza which, in Uzbek, means “a miracle done by a prophet.” I don’t know if the “miracle” refers to the restaurant’s giantsized, panoramic LED screen which serves as a most colorful backdrop for its dancers and singers, or to the bountiful food it serves. We enjoyed the 2-hour dinner served by an army of waitstaff, while colorful Uzbek dances and operatic singers performed. Whetting our appetite was the restaurant’s luxurious interiors, its ceiling décor especially, all Instagrammable from any angle. All in all, from Samarkand’s amazing architectural designs, important historical personalities, intricate and colorful mosaics of its landmark mosques and mausoleums, and the buzz of its bazaars, there is plenty to marvel at in this culturally rich Eden of the East.
