TG7 LEADERS SLAM CHINA FOR DANGEROUS SCS ACTS

SAYS NO LEGAL BASIS FOR ‘EXPANSIVE’ CLAIMS

HE Group of Seven on Saturday called out Beijing for its “increasing use” of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons against Filipino vessels as new Chinese coast guard rules allowing it to detain “trespassers” in the South China Sea took effect yesterday.

In a communiqué following the G7 Summit in Apulia, Italy, the leaders of the powerful economic grouping raised concerns about the situation in the East and South China Seas, reiterating their “strong opposition to any unilateral attempt

to change the status quo by force or coercion.”

“We continue opposing China’s dangerous use of coast guard and maritime militia in the South China Sea and its repeated obstruction of countries’ high seas freedom of nav-

igation,” they said in the statement.

“We express serious concern about the increasing use of dangerous maneuvers and water cannons against Philippine vessels.”

The G7 leaders reaffirmed their rejection of China’s maritime claims beyond the zones specified by the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea, citing the 2016 arbitral ruling that invalidated Beijing’s massive nine-dash-line claim over the SCS, including areas within the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone.

“We reaffirm that there is no legal basis for China’s expansive maritime claims in the South China Sea, and

we oppose China’s militarization, and coercive and intimidation activities in the South China Sea.”

The G7 represents the world’s leading industrialized democracies – Canada, France, the United States, Germany, Italy, Japan, and the United Kingdom.

China deploys coast guard and other boats to patrol the disputed waters and has turned several reefs into militarized artificial islands.

From Saturday, China’s coast guard can detain foreigners “suspected of violating management of border entry and exit,” according to the new regulations published online. With AFP

PH FILES UN CLAIM TO EXTEND CONTINENTAL SHELF IN WPS

THE Philippines has formally asked the United Nations to register its extended continental shelf (ECS) in the Western Palawan region in the West Philippine Sea, the Department of Foreign Affairs said on Saturday.

DFA Assistant Secretary for Maritime and Ocean Affairs

Marshall Louis Alferez said the submission is a declaration not only of the Philippines’ maritime entitlements under the UN Con -

vention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) but also of Manila’s commitment to the responsible application of its processes.

“Incidents in the waters tend to overshadow the importance of what lies beneath,” he said.

“The seabed and the subsoil extending from our archipelago up to the maximum extent allowed by UNCLOS hold significant potential resources that will benefit our nation and our

21 PINOY CREW IN HUTHI-HIT SHIP RESCUED, ONE MISSING

TWENTY-ONE out of 22 Filipino seafarers aboard the MV Tutor that was attacked by Huthi rebels in the Red Sea earlier this week have been rescued, the Department of Migrant Workers said yesterday.

Only one remains missing as combined international forces launched the rescue mission Friday evening, DMW Secretary Hans Cacdac said without naming the countries involved.

“The ship was adrift in the southern Red Sea. It was immobilized but stable. They were able to extract the 21 Filipino seafarers and they were boarded into a security ship,” he said.

“There is only one more remaining. He was in the engine room when the Huthi drone attacks happened. We are still searching for him,” Cacdac added.

people for generations to come. Today, we secure our future by making a manifestation of our exclusive right to explore and exploit natural resources in our ECS entitlement.”

Alferez said the submission would also help secure the Philippines’ sovereign rights and maritime jurisdictions in the West Philippine Sea, noting that the 2016 Arbitral Ruling confirmed the country’s maritime

THE Presidential Anti-Organized Crime Commission said it will file non-bailable criminal charges against Bamban Mayor Alice Guo next week for her part in suspected illegal POGO activities.

“There are quite a few criminal charges we could bring against the mayor of Bamban. What we discussed last night was that we should start with the most serious and non-bailable charges first, and then deal with the other charges later on,” PAOCC spokesperson Winston John Casio said on Saturday.

He said an interagency council, including the Department of Justice and the Philippine National Police, will meet Tuesday to finalize charges against the key figures of the POGO firm Zun Yuan

entitlements and rejected those that exceeded geographic and substantive limits under UNCLOS.

The submission of information at the UN Commission on the Limits of the Continental Shelf (CLCS) was made through the Philippine Mission to the UN in New York.

This is the second time the Philippines has registered an ECS entitlement.

He said the government is studying its policy on the deployment of Filipino seafarers to ships sailing through the Red Sea.

“In light of this recent incident, we are reviewing this current policy. Just give us room to review the policy,” Cacdac said.

Pending the new deployment policy, Cacdac said Filipino seafarers have the “right to refuse sailing” if they think their ship would sail through dangerous waters. The DMW chief said search and rescue operations would continue for the missing seafarer.

Technology Incorporated in Bamban. Guo is under Senate investigation for her alleged involvement with Zun Yuan, which was raided by police and military in March for suspected illegal activities at the Baofu Land Development Inc. compound behind Bamban Municipal Hall in Tarlac.

Casio said Guo’s name and signature appeared on numerous documents recovered from the POGO hub, but declined to give specifics.

As this developed, PAOCC said the document found in Lucky South 99, another raided POGO hub in Porac, Pampanga that bore the name of former presidential spokesperson Harry Roque was “innocent.”

“The document is not of suspicious criminal nature. We know that former secretary Roque is the lawyer of the Whirlwind Corporation, the lessor of

Lucky South 99. So, how the document found itself there is not something that I personally looked at as something suspicious,” Casio said.

He said they are now conducting an inventory after searching the 46 buildings within the Lucky South 99 Compound.

As this developed, House Assistant Minority Leader Arlene Brosas called on her colleagues to pass a measure banning POGOs.

“The negative impacts of POGOs far outweigh any potential benefits. With its influx in recent years, a number of crimes have already been recorded which was evident in the previous raids by various agencies. It is even more disturbing that such operations are banned in China, yet are fully operational and are taking advantage of our laws,” she said.

US FINALIZING PLANS ON INFRA

PROJECT FOR LUZON CORRIDOR

THE US is concretizing its plans for the Luzon Economic Corridor—an infrastructure initiative connecting Subic Bay, Clark, Manila, and Batangas.

US President Joe Biden made the announcement during the 2024 G7 Summit in Fasano, Italy.

The US State Department and USAID pledged more than $14.75 million, subject to congressional approval, to support project preparation and technical assistance for infrastructure development and other strategic programs along the Luzon Economic Corridor.

It is a part of the US commitment to accelerate sustainable infrastructure investment through the Partnership

for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGI), the G7’s flagship infrastructure program. Biden and G7 leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the PGI at the summit. The Luzon Economic Corridor is said to be the first PGI economic corridor in the Indo-Pacific.

Earlier at the April 2024 Trilateral Leaders’ Summit in Washington, D.C., the US and Japan joined the Philippines in supporting the infrastructure project.

A coalition of investors, cochaired by GIP and KKR, and the Indo-Pacific Partnership for Prosperity recently signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate on catalyzing infrastructure investment.

The coalition, which also includes Allied Climate Partners, BlackRock, GIC, The Rockefeller Foundation, and Temasek, will help identify, promote, and develop successful infrastructure projects. They will also support coordination with governments, multilateral development banks, and development finance institutions to create solutions for reducing investment risk.

The US government expects to replicate this model in other regions and countries in the coming

years to further attract private sector investment, aligning with PGI priorities. USAID is also providing transaction advisory assistance to the Clark International Airport Corp. (CIAC) for developing a food terminal and transport hub.

A US Trade and Development Agency (USTDA) grant is funding a feasibility study to support the expansion of a Vessel Traffic Management System at eight to 10 locations in the Philippines. Another USTDA grant is funding a feasibility study and pilot for Energy Development Corp., a private Philippine energy developer, to evaluate GreenFire Energy’s technology for increasing geothermal power production.

DAVAO OFFICIALS FACE CHARGES FOR CUT IN CASH AID FOR PREGNANT RESIDENT

CRIMINAL and administrative complaints have been filed before the Office of the Ombudsman in Davao City against two barangay officials involved in the deduction of P8,500 from the P10,000 worth of aid given to a pregnant beneficiary on June 6.

This is according to the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s (DSWD) Field Office-11 (Davao Region), saying it assisted Anne Villarin in the filing of criminal and administrative complaints against the chief of Barangay Sinawilan and a barangay kagawad.

The latter admitted in a video interview with Brigada News FM Davao to deducting a large portion of the cash assistance received by the pregnant beneficiary.

Based on the instruction of DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, a complaint affidavit was jointly executed by Villarin and DSWD FO-11 Regional Direc -

tor lawyer Vanessa Goc-ong, on behalf of the Department. The formal complaint  was submitted to the Office of the Ombudsman in the Davao Region, together with the affidavit of witnesses and authentication executed by the Brigada News FM Davao reporter and Field Office-11’s Legal Assistant.

“Our office has also provided Mrs. Villarin with an additional P8,500 because she refused to accept the money being returned by the barangay officials after the post went viral,” Asst. Secretary for Disaster Response Management Group (DRMG) Irene Dumlao said.

Villarin is the pregnant woman from Sinawilan, Matanao, Davao del Sur who complained in a video that the P10,000 she received during the Presidential Assistance to Farmers, Fishermen, and their Families (PAFFF) payout in Digos City was reduced by the barangay to P1,500.

LTO: NO PLATE, NO TRAVEL FOR QC TRIKES

THE Land Transportation Office (LTO), in  coordination with the local government of Quezon City,  will implement a “No Plate, No Travel” policy on tricycles being used as public transport within the city starting July 1.

LTO chief Assistant Secretary lawyer Vigor Mendoza II said the agency will strictly implement the policy after having been able to address the almost 3,000 backlog in license plates for tricycle drivers in Quezon City last month which was highlighted by the ceremonial distribution of license plates to Tricycle Operators and Drivers’ Associations (TODAs).

This is also in line with the instruction of Department of Transportation Secretary Jaime Bautista to immediately release all the license plates to the motorists in the soonest possible time, Mendoza added.

The “No Plate, No Travel” in Quezon City will serve as a pilot run of the stricter road safety and anti-colorum measures as the LTO is planning to expand the policy implementation nationwide, particularly on four wheel vehicles. Maricel V. Cruz

PH SLIDES TO 25TH IN GENDER GAP INDEX

IN ITS latest Global Gender Gap Index 2024, the World Economic Forum (WEF)said the Philippines slipped nine spots to land at 25th place out of 146 countries. The Global Gender Gap report, which was released on Tuesday, said the Philippines garnered a gender parity score of 77.9% or 1.2 percentage points lower than its 2023 score of 79.1%. The report said “losses in economic parity and a reduction in the share of women ministers” were key factors. The Global Gender Gap Index benchmarks gender parity across for key areas: economic participation and opportunity, educational attainment, health and survival, and political empowerment.

Among Asian countries, the Philippines ranked highest followed by Singapore at 48th spot, Thailand at 65th, and Vietnam at 72nd. In the Eastern Asia and Pacific region, the Philippines came in third, following New Zealand (4th overall) and Australia (24th overall).

Since the index was launched 18 years ago, the Philippines landed in the Top 10 a total of 13 consecutive times from 2006 to 2018. While it has not reentered the Top 10 since then, the Philippines has fared relatively better than its regional counterparts.

BACOLOD FIRMS

WELCOME QR RULE FOR SENIORS’ IDS

BACOLOD CITY -- Businesses in this city welcomed the new regulation requiring QR codes on IDs for senior citizens and persons with disabilities to boost security and ensure the authenticity of benefits. The move aims to enhance security and streamline the verification process for these IDs, ensuring that only legitimate cardholders can avail of the associated benefits.

THERE will be no number coding on June 17, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) announced on Saturday. June 17 has been declared a regular holiday for the commemoration of Eid’l Adha or Feast of Sacrifice. The number coding system corresponds to 1 and 2 for Monday, 3 and 4 for Tuesday, 5 and 6 for Wednesday, 7 and 8 for Thursday, and 9 and 0 for Friday. The implementation is from 7 a.m. - 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. - 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday, except during holidays.

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) meanwhile said private sector employees who will not report for work on June 17 are entitled to receive the full amount of their daily pay while those going on duty will be paid double. “If the employee does not work, the employer shall pay 100% of the employee’s wage for that day, provided that the employee reports to work or is on leave of absence with pay on the day immediately preceding the regular holiday,” Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said in a Labor advisory over the weekend.

Several establishment owners have praised the initiative, noting that the new security measures have significantly benefited both businesses and the community. This regulation was implemented after Bacolod City Mayor Albee Benitez ordered the re-issuance of all PWD and Senior Citizen IDs to incorporate additional security features.  This decision came in response to reports of fake PWD IDs circulating in the city, raising concerns about fraud and misuse. Benitez issued a memorandum to ensure the security of data and compliance with regulations, addressing issues faced by the PWD and Senior Citizen Affairs Office. Caloy Lozada

DSWD SEEKS INSURANCE FOR 4PS BENEFICIARIES

THE Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) is urging beneficiaries of the Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps) to secure insurance coverage and become future pensioners through the state-run Social Security System (SSS).

4Ps National Program Manager and Director Gemma Gabuya said insurance “is integral to our SWDI framework. Before graduating from 4Ps, beneficiaries must have security or insurance.”

Gabuya said this initiative is part of the DSWD’s commitment to ensure the financial security and sustainability of 4Ps beneficiaries as they transition out of the program.

“We want our 4Ps beneficiaries to have a stable source of income, whether through self-employment or formal employment. Part of our metric is for them to avail of SSS insurance,” the official said.

PNP READY TO FACE SCRUTINY OVER QUIBOLOY ARREST BID

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) is ready to face a Senate probe into the operation to serve arrest warrants on controversial Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) leader Apollo Quiboloy at his Davao City properties, PNP spokesperson Police Col. Jean Fajardo said.

In a radio interview, Fajardo said a probe would give the PNP the opportunity to air its side on the operation and show that the said operations were “valid.”

Earlier, Senator Robin Padilla hinted at an investigation into what he said could be human rights violations in the operations, which involved more than 100 police personnel, ABS-CBN News reported.

Reports said police entered Quiboloy’s property in Buhangin, Davao City, and the Prayer and Glory Mountains in Barangay Tamayong last June 3 but did not find the controversial preacher, who is facing abuse and trafficking cases in Davao City and Pasig City courts.

The operations reportedly caused tension between police and Quiboloy’s followers and have also prompted criticism from Quiboloy supporters, including former President Rodrigo Duterte, who called it “overkill.”

Police BGen. Aligre Martinez, Davao regional police director, and several other police personnel have been relieved from their posts following the operation.

BAN LETHAL AUTONOMOUS WEAPONS, POPE TELLS G7

POPE Francis called for a ban on “lethal autonomous weapons,” as he became the first pontiff to address the G7 grouping with a speech on the perils of artificial intelligence.

“In light of the tragedy that is armed conflict, it is urgent to reconsider the development and use of devices like the so-called ‘lethal autonomous weapons’ and ultimately ban their use,” the 87-year-old said.

“This starts from an effective and concrete commitment to introduce ever greater and proper human control. No machine should ever choose to take the life of a human being,” he told the meeting in Puglia, southern Italy.

Francis, invited by Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni to address the Group of Seven summit, has repeatedly denounced the arms industry and those he says profit from wars and death.

AI is already being used on the battlefield and its move into modern warfare is raising concerns about the risks of escalation and the role of humans in decision making.

AI has shown itself to be faster but not necessarily safer or more ethical, and the development of weapons systems that could kill without human intervention poses ethical and legal challenges.

“Artificial intelligence (is) at the same time an exciting and fearsome tool,” Francis told leaders gathered at the luxury Borgo Egnazia resort.

“We would condemn humanity to a future without hope if we took away people’s ability to make decisions about themselves and their lives,

by dooming them to depend on the choices of machines,” he warned.

The G7, which brings together Britain, Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan and the United States, said on Friday that AI “can play a crucial role in promoting progress and development in our societies.”

“We recognize the impact of AI on the military domain and the need for a framework for responsible development and use,” the leaders said in their joint statement.

At a strategic level, AI will produce models of battlefields and propose how to respond to attacks, maybe even including the use of nuclear weapons.

“We need to ensure and safeguard a space for proper human control over the choices made by artificial intelligence programmes: human dignity itself depends on it,” Francis said. AFP

US MILITARY SAYS DESTROYED HUTHI RADARS, VESSELS

THE US military said it destroyed two uncrewed surface vessels in the Red Sea belonging to Yemen’s Huthis, as well as one drone and seven radars that allowed the rebels to target ships.

The Iran-backed Huthis, who control much of Yemen, have launched dozens of drone and missile strikes into the Red Sea and the Gulf of Aden since November, describing them as retaliation for the IsraelHamas war.

In the last 24 hours, “forces successfully destroyed one uncrewed aerial system” launched over the Red Sea, US Central Command (CENTCOM) said in a social media post. It said US forces also destroyed two Huthi uncrewed surface vessels plus “seven Iranian-backed” Huthi radars in a Huthi-controlled area of Yemen.

The radars allowed the Huthis “to target maritime vessels and endanger commercial shipping,” CENTCOM said.

“It was determined these systems presented an imminent threat to U.S., coalition forces, and merchant vessels in the region,” CENTCOM said in the post. AFP

SWISS MUSEUM TO REMOVE 5 NAZI LINKED PAINTINGS

THE Kunsthaus Zurich, one of Switzerland’s most prestigious art museums, has announced it will remove five paintings after a review of their provenance under new guidelines for dealing with artworks looted by the Nazis.

A sixth painting also came in for additional scrutiny, the foundation responsible for the Emil Buhrle Collection said, though it did not believe the new guidelines applied to the work.

The foundation’s namesake was a German-born arms dealer who made his fortune during World War II, and there have long been suspicions about the Nazi-era origins of one of Europe’s most prestigious private art collections.

“The Kunsthaus Zurich has been informed by the Foundation E.G. Buhrle Collection that the Foundation is seeking solutions with the legal successors of former owners for six works in the collection,” the museum said.

TRUMP TURNS 78 - AND AGE IS INCREASINGLY AN ISSUE

DONALD Trump, whose attempted White House return is based in part on attacking President Joe Biden as old and feeble, turned 78 Friday – just three years younger than his election rival – with growing questions over his own health.

Whoever wins the November election will set a new age record. At 81, Biden is already the oldest man to hold the office and would continue to be so, while if Trump wins, he would become the oldest ever at an inauguration.

Trump, aided by the right-wing media ecosystem, has carefully worked to build an image of vigor, in attempted contrast to an opponent he routinely claims is “sleepy” or even senile.

Whether staging photo-ops with martial arts personalities or performing his trademark short dance at the end of rallies, Trump spares little effort to come across as an energetic showman.

Heavy use of cosmetics and hairspray typically give him a look – at a distance – of a tanned and younger man.

Trump aimed to maintain that image at a

party in West Palm Beach, in his home state of Florida, as he gave an hour-long campaign speech before a throng of paying guests.

Club 47 USA, a Trump supporters’ group, hosted the event near the ex-president’s Mar-aLago residence and golf resort, with the crowd singing “Happy Birthday” as he stood on stage before a row of American flags.

“Wow, is that a nice crowd,” he said, before launching into his boilerplate speech.

Invitations, featuring a picture of Trump grinning and hugging yet another US flag, referred to him as “the best president ever.”

The former president is used to the flattery, with almost the entire Republican party now lined up behind him.

On Thursday, he received a rousing happy birthday message in Washington from Republican members of Congress.

They included senior figures who only three years ago had denounced him after cowering in fear as a mob of Trump supporters tried to storm the Capitol to overturn Biden’s 2020 election win.

NOKOR BUILDING ROADS, WALLS INSIDE DEMILITARIZED ZONE – YONHAP

NORTH Korea’s military has been building roads and walls inside the Demilitarized Zone that separates it from the South, the Yonhap news agency reported Saturday.

The construction activities are taking place north of the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) that runs through the middle of the DMZ, the South Korean agency said, citing an unnamed military source.

The report follows an incident last week when South Korean forces fired warning shots after North Korean soldiers briefly crossed the MDL.

South Korean authorities said it was likely accidental, and Yonhap quoted a military spokesman as saying some of the North Koreans were carrying work tools.

“Recently, the North Korean military has been erecting walls, digging the ground and constructing roads in some areas between the Military Demarcation Line (MDL) and the Northern Limit Line in the DMZ,” the military source said, according to Yonhap on Saturday.

It was not clear what they were building, the source told Yonhap.

When asked about the report, the South Korean military said in a statement that it was “closely tracking and monitoring the activities of the North Korean military,” and that “further analysis is required.”

It said it could not share the South Korean response to these actions “to ensure the safety of the personnel proceeding with an operation,” without offering further details.

South Korea’s spy agency told AFP this week that it had detected signs that North Korea was demolishing sections of a railway line connecting the two countries.

That followed an escalation in the propaganda war between the two Koreas.

North Korea sent more than a thousand balloons carrying trash into the South, describing them as retaliation for the propaganda balloons sent the other way by anti-Pyongyang activists.

Then, South Korea resumed blasting K-pop songs and news broadcasts at the North, using loudspeakers installed at the border. AFP

“The Kunsthaus welcomes this approach, but in the interests of visitors very much regrets that five of the paintings will be removed from the Kunsthaus premises” by the foundation on Thursday, it added.

The paintings in question are by Gustave Courbet, Claude Monet, Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Vincent van Gogh and Paul Gauguin. AFP

SINKHOLES THREATEN LUXURY PROPERTY IN CHILE’S RESORT CITY

IT WAS meant to be paradise on earth: a luxury apartment building standing just a few meters away from the beach with breathtaking views of the Pacific Ocean. However, intense rains that have lashed Chile in recent days caused a giant sinkhole to open underneath this high-end property in the resort city of Vina del Mar, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of residents.

The 13-floor building with 200 apartments worth up to $500,000 each is now sitting atop a hole that is 15 meters (50 feet) long and 30 meters deep, the third such hole that opened here in less than a year.

Sergio Silva, 77, one of the few residents still left at Euromarina II, was trying to shove some of his belongings into a car to take them to a safer place because more rains are expected.

“We are taking important things, not everything,” Silva told AFP.

Residents of the building that stands below Euromarina II, at sea level, have also had to abandon their homes for

fear that it would collapse on them. AFP

IN THE mid-2000s, a two-hectare plot of land in Panabo, Davao del Norte faced a common challenge: depleted soil fertility due to years of chemical use.

Betty and Ervin More, a couple passionate about sustainable agriculture, saw this as an opportunity. They embarked on a journey to revitalize the land using organic farming practices.

Their approach involved crop diversification, integrating livestock for natural inputs and employing organic methods.

This not only restored the land’s health but also boosted production and income within two years. Their success story inspired a wave of organic farming practices in neighboring farms, demonstrating the viability of sustainable agriculture in the region.

Market demand

However, the agricultural sector was subject to fluctuating market forces. In 2008, a drop in coconut prices forced the Mores to adapt.

Recognizing the growing health-conscious consumer trend, they ventured into coconut sugar production.

Funded by personal savings and with guidance from the government’s Food and Drug Administration (FDA), they established a dedicated production facility within their farm.

THE Filipino car market is in a state of flux, with motorists and commuters grappling with the perennial issue of monstrous traffic congestion on a daily basis. Amid this backdrop, car buyers are faced with a deluge of news and information, often conflicting, about the latest developments in the automotive industry.

The electric vehicle (EV) segment continues to hog the limelight, with news of impressive advancements in battery technology and range capabilities from some global EV manufacturers. However, reports of slowing EV sales in certain markets have also emerged, leaving would-be EV buyers uncertain about the best time to make the transition from internal combustion engine (ICE) vehicles.

Interestingly, the local automotive scene has witnessed a surge of new ICE car introductions, with manufacturers offering attractive styling and competitive pricing. The rise of hybrid and hydrogen-powered vehicles has also piqued the interest of buyers who prioritize fuel efficiency and cost savings.

This conflicting information has led some consumers to pause and carefully consider their car-buying decisions, as they navigate the complex and rapidly evolving automotive landscape.

Amid the uncertainties, one encouraging sign is the recent report of a 12% year-onyear increase in car sales in the Philippines during the first few months of the year. This suggests that despite the hesitation of some buyers, there are still many who have already committed to acquiring new vehicles, contributing to the persistent traffic congestion challenges faced by the country.

As the automotive industry continues to evolve, car buyers in the Philippines must stay informed, weigh their options carefully, and make decisions that align with their needs, preferences, and long-term mobility goals. The ability to navigate this dynamic market will be crucial in ensuring a satisfying and rewarding car-buying experience.

This year’s tournament will support two remarkable initiatives: the Growing Early Minds Therapy

EXPERIENCING the thrill of hitting targets with night vision goggles, whether in combat or at a shooting range, is an exhilarating challenge.

Recently, a small group of enthusiasts and hobbyists passed this experience with flying colors, successfully completing the Blades and Bullets PH Night Vision Defensive Carbine course at the Bacolor Practical Shooting Range in Pampanga.

Marksmanship lead trainer Jose Carlos Coruna spearheaded the training, attended by select individuals from the combat industry and media. He was assisted by Adrine Pierre Quidlat, Edged, and Impact Weapons lead trainer, and Adrien Jesus Quidlat, Trauma Care lead trainer.

In real combat, operatives face threats that can arise anytime, including low-light or no-light environments. This course focused on essential skills for using a carbine in such conditions. The one-day event was supported by Luminox, the preferred watch brand for militaries worldwide. Featured at the event was the Luminox RECON POINT-MAN watch, a tribute to reconnaissance units. Participants had the opportunity to purchase these watches at a 30% discount.

MAVERICKS STAY ALIVE IN NBA FINALS

LUKA Doncic and the Dallas Mavericks dominated Boston 122-84 on Friday to fend o elimination in the NBA Finals, denying the Celtics a sweep in the bestof-seven championship series.

Doncic scored 25 of his 29 points in the rst half and Kyrie Irving added 21 for the Mavs, who snapped the Celtics’ 10-game playo winning streak but still have a mountain to climb as they try to become the rst team to rally from a 3-0 de cit to win an NBA playo series. Now down 3-1, Dallas will try to stop the Celtics from celebrating an 18th title when they travel to Boston for game ve on Monday.

“Like I said at the beginning of the series, it’s first to four,” Doncic said.

“We’re going to believe until the end.

“I have big belief in this team that we can do it, so we’ve just got to keep believing.”

Doncic, roundly criticized after game three when he fouled out with more than four minutes left and could only watch as the Mavs’ comeback bid fell short, was dialed in on the defensive end as Dallas held the Celtics to 36.2 percent shooting.

Boston star Jayson Tatum scored 15 points and Jaylen Brown had just 10 as the Mavs posted the third-largest margin of victory in NBA Finals history.

“Thought they played with a ton of energy and physicality,” Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla said of the Mavericks. “And they are a great team, that’s the reason why they are here when they play like that.”

Tim Hardaway Jr. added 15 points o the bench for Dallas and 20-yearold rookie Dereck Lively added 11 —including his first career threepointer—as the Mavs topped 100 points for the rst time in the series.

Dallas handed Boston their rst road defeat of these playo s and ended their bid for the 10th 4-0 sweep in Finals history.

With Doncic and Irving leading the way, Dallas built a 34-21 rst-quarter lead—the Mavs’ highest-scoring quarter of the series. There was no let-up in the second, the Mavs dominating every facet of the game on the way to a 61-35 halftime lead. AFP

MISSY SUNSHINE: FROM ABANDONED DOG TO RING BEARER

ON A beautiful day in June, 2014, Virgilio Cabanag, a kind-hearted resident of Casimiro Townhomes in Deparo, Caloocan, came across a sick black aspin (Asong Pinoy) on the street near his home. Without hesitation, he reached out to Save Animals of Love and Light-Save ALL Inc, an animal welfare group, through their Facebook page to ask for assistance to rescue the poor puppy.

Virgilio vividly remembers the sorry state the puppy was in when he first laid eyes on her. She was painfully thin, riddled with ticks and fleas, and her fur was almost gone due to a skin disease. It was clear that she had been abandoned because of her condition.

After being rescued from the streets, the pup was taken to a vet clinic that works closely with Save ALL. The diagnosis was startling: she had a serious case of sarcoptic mange which is highly contagious and demodectic mange. Some values in her blood test were also causes for concern. Despite the challenges ahead, Virgilio and his then-girlfriend, Krizhia, lovingly agreed to foster the pup, who they affectionately named Missy Sunshine, or 'Shine' for short. Shine's road to recovery was expected to be long and arduous, filled with ups and downs. Thanks to the unwavering support of Save ALL, Virgilio and Krizhia, as well as generous donations from kind-hearted individuals, Shine received the medical care she desperately needed.

Unfortunately however, new tests showed she was positive for distemper. The challenges kept coming, but Virgilio and Krizhia never gave up on her.

Month after month, Shine faced one medical challenge after another, but with Virgilio and Krizhia's unwavering love and support, she continued to fight and eventually grew stronger and healthier. Over time, Virgilio and Krizhia's bond with Shine deepened, and they made the decision to officially adopt her as their own, becoming her forever furparents.

When asked why Virgilio decided to adopt Shine, he said that the love he developed for her while caring for her as her foster furdaddy is truly undeniable “Inadopt ko si Shine dahil syempre, napamahal na sya sakin habang inaalagaan ko sya,” he said.

He also pointed out that, of all the ‘rescues’ he had fostered in the past, Shine was the only one who was utterly kind and gentle and never once complained no matter what condition she was in and that made it so easy for him to love her all the more “Hindi sya mahirap mahalin dahil sa sobrang bait ni Shine. Sa iilan na mga fur-babies na dumaan sakin na mababait, kay Shine po talaga ako walang masabi,” he said.

Together, Virgilio and Krizhia showered Shine with all the

love, care and attention she needed to thrive.

Last April 6, 2024, Virgilio and Krizhia tied the knot, with Shine proudly serving as their ring bearer. This is because Shine is truly most dear to them and that she is like a child of their own, Virgilio said. They, definitely, would not want her to miss out on this special day of their life together. They even had a gown specially made for Shine for that occasion

“Dahil nga special sya sa akin talaga, parang anak na kasi talaga ang turing namin ni misis kay Shine. At ayun nga, matagal ko na rin sinabi na hindi pwedeng wala si Shine sa magiging kasal namin ni misis. Pinasadyaan talaga namin sya ng gown kasi nga sabi ko, sabay kami lalakad sa ceremony, “ Virgilio said.

It has been 10 years since her rescue. Despite her age, Shine has aged gracefully and happily, surrounded by the love of her dedicated furparents. Her furdaddy proudly shared how much he feels Shine’s love and loyalty for them and that is why they love her just as much. And just seeing Shine happy about anything at all already takes the stress of the day off of him. That is how he lovingly declares how much he loves his little Sunshine.

“She enriched my life….. mararamdaman talaga natin ang pagiging loyal nila satin. At nawawala talaga stress ko sa tuwing kasama ko si Shine..…. basta isa lang talaga ang alam ko----- masaya ako na nakikita kong masaya ang Sunshine ko. Mahal na mahal ko talaga si Shine,” Virgilio said.

The journey from being abandoned and left for dead to a cherished member of the family is a testament to the power of love and compassion.

This heartwarming story serves as a reminder of our responsibility to care for all creatures, regardless of breed or background as God mandated humankind. This family's story is a shining example of the positive impact we can have when we choose kindness and empathy towards all living beings.

"Be the person who cares.

Be the person who makes the effort, the person who loves without hesitation. Be the person who bares it all, the person who never shies away from the depth of their feeling, or the intensity of their hope.

Be the person who believes in the softness of the world, in the goodness of other people, in the beauty of being open and untethered and trusting.

Be the person who takes the chance, who refuses to hide.

Be the person who makes people feel seen, the person who shows up.

Trust me when I say ; be the person who cares. Because the world doesn’t need more carelessness, any more disregard; because there is nothing stronger than someone who continues to stay soft in a world that hasn’t always been kind to them."

From Wonderful Animals

Posted by Steven Walker:

"I never wanted any animals in the house. I was raised with this old mentality that animals should be left outside... When my son and daughter-in-law, brought me the kid to babysit while they worked, I not only loved animals, but I got mad at myself for believing the crap they told me for so many years!

From now on, I cook for the child, hug him, kiss him, sit together on the sofa, I play music and cover him if he gets cold. Us old folks were raised wrong... The younger ones have to raise me animals like family members. They deserve it"

COFFEE enthusiasts who are looking for a quick stopover to enjoy a good brew will delight in the newest store concept unveiled by UCC Ueshima Coffee Philippines by the Mugen Group, the company behind the UCC cafes and restaurants in the Philippines.

On June 5, it held the grand opening of its first XPRESSO by UCC at Petron Bel-Air in Makati.

“At XPRESSO, we understand that you’re always on the go, and we are here to fuel your journey with a shot of happiness. XPRESSO by UCC is more than just a coffee kiosk; it is a testament to our commitment to providing you with the best quality coffee, quickly and conveniently,” said Mugen Group President and CEO Hubert Young.

“We are proud to offer our products at affordable prices without compromising on quality.

XPRESSO makes premium coffee accessible to everyone.

XPRESSO by UCC’s menu includes to-go coffee and non-coffee varieties that are perfect with their pastries and sandwiches. The menu items are designed to be ready-to-carry for customers on their way to school, work, or home.

The store’s design and branding are heavily influenced by Japanese pop culture and aesthetics as can be seen in its logo, which consists of a red circle (similar to the Nisshōki or Japanese flag) and the XPRESSO name, all contained within a stacked box.

Our coffee and food items are meticulously crafted to ensure they meet the high standards that UCC is known for,” Young added. From P60 to P180 for beverages and P70 to P120 for food items,

XPRESSO by UCC’s official tagline, “A Sip of the Rising Sun,” embodies its Japanese roots and inspiration — the company that eventually became UCC was founded in Kobe in 1933 by the Father of Coffee in Japan, Tadao Ueshima.

The tagline also mirrors the heartwarming and energetic personality of XPRESSO by UCC

THE launch of the MAGGI and Nestlé Cream Food Creators Network drew culinary enthusiasts to The Blue Leaf Events Pavilion in McKinley Hill. The kick-off event, aptly named “Tasteblazers: Reinventing Culinary Inspiration,” offered an immersive, first-of-its-kind experience where attendees engaged with some of the most influential names in the food industry to inspire and elevate the culinary arts through shared knowledge and creativity.

"Helping Pinoys eat well, do good, and connect around food moments has always been the driving force behind our brands MAGGI, Nestle All Purpose Cream, and Carnation. We all want to create a food movement that enables eating well, doing good for ourselves, our families, and our communities. Together, we will help create memorable food moments and bring the magic of Pinoy cuisine to everyone to savor and enjoy,” said Rosa Simba, Business Executive Officer for Nestle Food Business Unit.

Showcasing culinary mastery in a series of dynamic cook-offs, interactive cooking stations, and lively sessions were top chefs and food creators including restaurateur Chef Myke "Tatung" Sarthou, author of the Simpol Young Chef’s Cookbook; creator of Panlasang Pinoy food vlog Vanjo Merano; award-winning pastry chef, dessert connoisseur and Nestlé Homebakers Club expert resource Chef Jackie Ang Po; Lalaine Manalo of Kawaling Pinoy, versatile actor and cooking enthusiast David Licauco; multi-awarded actress and culinary aficionado Barbie Forteza; and Nestle Kitchen Studio Creators Seth Alonzo, Nica Soledad, Sam Bawasanta, and Trish Chua.

in helping Filipinos level up their day and encourage them to be their best.

According to the World Coffee Portal Research, the Philippines is the second largest individual coffee-consuming market in Asia with 80 percent of Filipinos drinking an average of 2.5 cups a day. Japan comes in first place. These numbers reflect that coffee is not just a pastime for Filipinos, but an integral part of their lifestyle.

With this in mind, XPRESSO by UCC seeks to serve Filipino coffee drinkers who are looking for new coffee offerings that don’t compromise on quality.

“As we move forward, we remain dedicated to our mission: to provide convenient coffee venues that serve the finest flavors of Japanese coffee at an affordable price. Each cup of XPRESSO coffee is a promise of quality and a moment of joy,” Young said.

Creators Seth Alonzo, Nica Soledad, Sam Bawasanta, and Trish Chua infused their love for food and dynamic storytelling into the Tasteblazers event, giving attendees a peek into the ever-changing world of culinary content geared towards younger viewers. David Licauco and Barbie Forteza also shared their personal cooking experiences, inspiring attendees to explore new flavors and cooking techniques.

Melai Cantiveros-Francisco, the newest face of MAGGI Magic Chicken Cubes, highlighted the importance of balancing a busy career with managing household meals, and how Maggi products make it easier for her to prepare delicious, nutritious food for her family. Melai's relatable stories and warm humor resonated with many in the audience, showing how anyone can create magic in the kitchen.

Judy Ann Santos-Agoncillo, the longest-endorsing celebrity for MAGGI, reflected on her journey with the brand and the evolution of their partnership. She spoke about the new "Cook with Magic" initiative, which takes their collaboration beyond traditional advertising to interactive cooking shows.

The launch of the MAGGI and Nestlé Cream Food Creators Network timed with the release of its first ‘Cook with Magic’ episode of Season 2. Foodies can tune in every Monday on the Nestle Goodness YouTube channel to witness the creative process, gain inspiration, and learn from the favorite recipes of special guests. By leveraging the expertise of its members and the quality of MAGGI, Nestle All-Purpose Cream and Carnation products, the network redefines culinary inspiration and elevates the cooking experience for all.

STUDENT INNOVATORS BLEND DESIGN PHILOSOPHY, TECHNOLOGY IN CREATIONS

MAGNITUDE : Groundbreaking

Innovations, a series of human-centered design solutions by 17 Filipino designers, addresses issues on sustainability, productivity, health, and safety to enhance the quality of life of its users. The importance of material development, environmental design, and bio-waste management were likewise considered.

Conceptualized and created by the budding talents from the Industrial Design Program of the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB), the works integrated design philosophies with technology to meet the demands of the modern consumer.

CeliaWorks by Mikaela Asuncion used mycelium as a binding agent for wood waste to create a durable, lightweight composite. Pomtex by Rika Higashi converted pomelo fruit by-products into a fire-retardant, humidity-resistant material.

Brianna Khu’s Bukopel revolutionized self-care product packaging with coconut agricultural waste, while Sue Oblepias’ Parafilter used coconut fiber and activated charcoal for affordable tap water purification.

Austin Panti’s Aatos, an adjustable ergonomic armchair, supported both left- and right-handed primary learners, promoting good posture during study sessions. Ysabella Villaverde’s VISILLA, an improved airport gang chair, featured reclining seats, mini tables, charging outlets, and storage systems.

Kenji Del Rosario’s MOKU, an outdoor ventilation system inspired by termite

mounds, used TEFLON funnels for moisture and temperature management.

Jewel Baltazar’s Kasalo, a redesigned ice cream cart, included comfortable grips, swivel wheels with stoppers, and a removable cooler.

Glenn Laurence Hernandez’s IGAH, a coffee bean dryer, featured a rotating mechanism, strategically placed fans and heat lamps, a control panel, and a safety monitoring program.

Derick Chen’s INSURIN, a vacuum-insulated diabetic care kit, kept temperature-sensitive medicine cool for hours. Kathlyn Go’s PULSO, a heart monitoring-alert system, included ECG technology and an alerting pendant. Mary Joyce Curia’s Geknu, an assistive knee support for patellar tendonitis rehabilitation, featured a mobile app with accelerometer and gyroscope technology for real-time feedback. Angelica Ibit’s Malia, a rechargeable menstrual management device, used heat therapy with a foldable pad, elastic belt, three heat settings, and automatic shut-off.

CONTENT creator Boss Toyo gears up for a very special Father’s Day this year as he is about to welcome a new addition to their family, making the event extra special.

He and his partner, Loves Jhoy, announced last month that they would be having a baby boy with the help of IVF treatment, stating that it has been their dream to have their own baby after his partner suffered from a miscarriage.

In terms of being a dad, Boss Toyo admitted that he was not a perfect father but he tried to provide for them as best as he could, especially financially.

“I can’t say that I’m a good father, but it seems like that’s the case. Because I have other children whom I also post about on my social media. They can see how I support them in everything,” he said.

When asked if he was a strict or cool dad, Boss Toyo admitted that he preferred to spoil his children.

“Now that I’m not with my child, I just give them what they need, their pleasures. So, I spoil them,” stated Boss Toyo. He also recalled the difficult times he experienced when he could barely afford to have his children checked at health centers. Now, with all the blessings he is receiving, he ensures to provide the best care he can for his wife.

“My wife and I had a check-up recently, and now we can afford to go to expensive hospitals, even St. Luke’s. I’m very happy because before, all my children would only have check-ups at health centers. Even for childbirth, we had to borrow P2,000 for the public hospital. I didn’t know where my wife would give birth,” he continued.

“So now, Asian Hospital offered us some free services. It’s heartwarming because before, I struggled so much to get by and really didn’t know where to turn. Now, we’ve reached this point,” shared the “Pinoy Pawnstars” host.

Recently, he signed with IT solutions ZKTeco as its newest brand partner and brand ambassador.

Celebrating Father’s Day this weekend, Boss Toyo revealed that he is planning to spend it in Boracay with his partner.

RJ Mallari ’s ARMA collapsible helmet, inspired by the armadillo’s defensive curl, included light signal indicators for urban cyclists and compact portability. Juan Carlos Prado ’s ArcticPro arm sleeve provided cooling with

moisture-wicking fabrics and gel packs targeting pulse points.

Raphael Amparo ’s Furbool KoolK9 used evaporative cooling and refrigerated gel packs to prevent heat-related complications for dogs. Joyce Genesis Vasquez ’s Sagip emergency alert device, designed for hard-of-hearing individuals, relayed alerts through vibrotactile signals and enabled direct communication between the transmitter and the gadget.

THIS Father’s Day, Marks & Spencer introduces its latest collection to ensure every dad feels special and stylish.
