ROPICAL Depression “Aghon” maintained its strength as it continued to move west-northwestward over Sibuyan Sea, affecting a wide swathe of Luzon and Visayas.

In its 5:00 p.m. bulletin, state weather bureau PAGASA said the eye of Aghon was estimated over the coastal waters of Sibuyan Island, moving at 20 kilometers per hour (kph) with maximum sustained winds of 45 kph near the center.

The Philippine Coast Guard reported Saturday that over 6,833 passengers and truck drivers in the Bicol, Eastern Visayas, Central Visayas, Southern Tagalog, and even Northeastern Mindanao regions were stranded due to Tropical Depression

PRESIDENT Marcos urged Congress to pass the proposed amendments to the Rice Tariffication Law to allow the National Food Authority to import and sell rice in a bid to stabilize prices.

Mr. Marcos said allowing the NFA to import and sell rice would help not only farmers but also consumers.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD), through its field office in Bicol, provided hot meals to more than 2,000 stranded passengers in various ports across the region yesterday.

The Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) likewise issued an alert for all airports in the Bicol region due to the potential impact of Aghon.

“The NFA would be able to keep up with the private sector. This is actually the primary [reason] why the NFA was established,” he added.

The President said amending the RTL is part of broader government initiatives to support Filipino farm-

ers facing various challenges.

On Tuesday, the House of Representatives approved on third and final reading the proposed amendments to the RTL.

Under the bill, the NFA shall be allowed to – in the following order –purchase local milled rice; purchase up to a maximum of 30 percent brought in by accredited importers at cost; and as a final recourse, once all domestic sources have been exhausted, directly import rice, sub-

on Saturday said it is ready to assist and repatriate thousands of overseas Filipino workers in Taiwan should tensions with China escalate further.

DMW Secretary Hans Leo Cacdac said the Philippine government is well prepared to evacuate Filipinos in Taiwan if it becomes necessary following China’s two-day military drills that Taipei said were a “blatant provocation to the international order.”

“We have always coordinated ourselves with the proper government agencies. Rest assured that the DMW, together with other government agencies, are prepared to assist our OFWs in Taiwan and there is already a plan on the manner by which they will be transported,” Cacdac said.

‘PADILLA EYED AS NEXT PREXY OF PDP-LABAN’

SENATOR Robin Padilla is set to become the next party president of the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino (PDP), Senate Majority Leader Francis Tolentino said. Tolentino said the actor-turnedpolitician is the frontrunner for the post, while former President Rodrigo Duterte will remain as chairman.

“He (Padilla) is not seeking reelection in 2025, so he is in a more comfortable position,” he said in an interview with Teleradyo Serbisyo. Tolentino said the party presidency will still need to be formalized even as he noted that Padilla was already a ranking party official as PDP’s former executive vice president.

Aghon could make landfall over Marinduque within the next 12 hours.

Upon making landfall, PAGASA said Aghon will continue to move northward and may possibly make another landfall over Batangas or Quezon and traverse the Calabarzon area.

ject to explicit authorization from the Agriculture Secretary.

The bill also extends the validity period for the Rice Competitiveness Enhancement Fund or RCEF for six more years and boosts its budget from P10 billion to P15 billion.

At the Upper Chamber, however, some senators have opposed the bill due to concerns about the NFA regaining authority to sell and import rice, citing past corruption allegations.

“We are ready. We stand ready – we have a contingency plan, specifically in that part of the world,” he said, adding the government has already identified “convergence points” where Filipinos in Taiwan will be secured to safety for their eventual repatriation.

DMW data showed there are around 200,000 OFWs in Taiwan.

China’s drills were launched three days after Taiwan’s President Lai Ching-te took office and made an inauguration speech that China denounced as a “confession of independence.”

China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory, regards Lai as a “dangerous separatist.”

By Friday evening, a presenter for state-run military news channel CCTV7 said the Chinese army had “successfully completed” the operation

Padilla resigned from the post in May 2023 to focus on his work as a senator.

In his resignation, Padilla noted that the PDP-Laban has much to achieve and thus needs an EVP who can devote more time to the party’s affairs.

Padilla is the chairperson of the Senate Committee on Constitutional Amendments and Revision of Codes.

Last month, Duterte named the party’s first four official candidates for senator in next year’s midterm elections.

The former president endorsed the reelection bid of incumbent Senators Christopher Go, Ronald dela Rosa, and Tolentino, as well as former movie actor Philip Salvador, who accepted the nomination to be part of the PDP senatorial lineup for the 2025 elections.

In a statement, Lai’s presidential spokesperson Karen Kuo reiterated that ensuring peace and stability across the region was “related to the common interests of the international community.”

“However, China’s recent unilateral provocation not only undermines the status quo of peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait but it is also a blatant provocation to the international order, triggering serious concern and condemnation from the international community,” she said.

Kuo added that Taiwan hopes “China will take the safety and happiness of the people on both sides into consideration, pursue mutual benefit, coexistence... stop all kinds of political and military intimidations on Taiwan and the region.” AFP

PBBM REAPPOINTS CACDAC

AS AD INTERIM DMW CHIEF

PRESIDeNT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has reappointed Hans Leo Cacdac as the ad interim secretary of the Department of Migrant Workers (DMW).

The reappointment of Cacdac, indicated in a list of presidential appointees released by Malacañang on Friday, demonstrates President Marcos’ continued trust and confidence on the official.

The Second Regular Session of the 19th Congress adjourned sine die on Thursday, prompting the CA

to defer Cacdac’s confirmation. Before this, President Marcos appointed Cacdac as ad interim Secretary of the DMW in April this year, seven months after he was designated as officer-in-charge of the department in September 2023. He was designated DMW officer-in-charge after the passing of

former Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople in August last year. Cacdac served as Undersecretary of the DMW; Executive Director V of the Overseas Workers Welfare Administration (OWWA); Executive Director V of the Philippine Employment Administration (POEA); and Undersecretary of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE). He also served as Deputy Executive Director V of the POEA; Executive Director IV of the National Conciliation Mediation Board-DOLE; Director IV of the Bureau of Labor Relations-DOLE; and Associate Lawyer and Urban Poor Unit Coordinator of the Sentro

ng Alternatibong Lingap Panligal (SALIGAN) in the private sector.

The President meanwhile directed the DMW to provide support to the families of 20 Filipino mariners caught in recent attacks in the Red Sea.

“We are handholding the families as directed by the President,” Cacdac said during a news forum on Saturday.

“We have been meeting them often, either in person or virtually. And just recently, a few families went back to our office and we talked to them, continuing our conversations with the Galaxy Leader families, supporting them through these tough times,” he added.

DSWD PRESSES FACEBOOK TO TAKE DOWN PAGES SELLING BABIES

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) has pressed its call on Facebook to take down pages engaged in the illegal selling of babies online following the arrest of a mother who tried to peddle her eight-day-old baby through a middleman using a Facebook account.

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian said the National Authority for Child Care (NACC), an attached agency of the DSWD, has been asking Facebook to take down the pages engaged in the criminal activity of selling babies online in the guise of adoption but the social media provider has so far failed to act on the NACC’s request.

Gatchalian said the NACC asked Facebook to take down those pages last year, but the company has not acted on the matter.

He said social media is a powerful tool if put to good use. “But it can also be a very cruel tool, especially when it is being used for human trafficking, which is a cruel act. It’s cruel, and abusive,” he pointed out.

“So maybe, here, our appeal to the public is to help us report if you see something. But at the same time, we will continue engaging Facebook, so that we can regulate to some degree the utilization of their platform,” Gatchalian said.

PRODUCERS SAY INCREASE IN FARM INPUTS CAUSING

PRICE HIKE

THE Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines Inc. (PPFP) said an increase in farm inputs and production costs is causing pork prices to rise.

In a radio interview, PPFP president Rolando Tambago said the farm-gate price of pork has increased to an average of P210 per kilo.

“The farm-gate price increased because the costs of farm inputs rose,” Tambago, quoted by GMA News report, said.

The PPFP chief also pointed out the “gap” amounting to about P120 between farm-gate and retail price of pork in the markets due to transportation or logistics costs.

“The government should focus on finding a solution in addressing the gap,” he said.

Tambago said rising logistics and doing business costs add on about P120 to P150 per kilo to the farm-gate price.

“The government should look into the gap between farms and retailers,” he said, noting that there is no manipulation of pork prices since hog raisers are scattered all over the Philippines.

“Logistics and inputs are the problem, that’s why the price of pork is higher,” he said.

TAGUIG CITY GRANTS FREE FRANCHISES TO 1.3K TRICYCLE UNITS

THE city government of Taguig has granted free franchises to 1,300 tricycle units owned by various tricycle operators and drivers associations (TODA) in EMBO (Enlisted Men’s Barrio) villages. Mayor Laarni Cayetano emphasized the importance of having permits and urged drivers to comply with laws and regulations, prioritize riders’ safety, and be responsible members of their associations.

“What the City of Taguig is giving is not just an ordinary franchise, but also trust - and we know as Filipinos, trust is priceless,” Cayetano said in a recent event held at the Benigno S. Aquino High School in Barangay Comembo.

“Let’s adhere to the laws and rules and always consider the safety of our riders. Let’s commit to being responsible members of our associations,” the mayor added.

The presidents of the 34 TODA in EMBO received their Motorized Tricycle Operator’s Permits (MTOP), allowing them to legally operate their tricycles for their livelihood.

Tricycle drivers and operators expressed gratitude for the free franchises, stating that they were thankful for the opportunity to renew their permits without fear of fines and earn a decent income legally. Joel E. Zurbano

GATCHALIAN FILES MEASURE TO OUTLAW POGOS AMID INCREASE IN CRIMES

SENATOR Sherwin Gatchalian has filed a bill to outlaw Philippine Offshore Gaming Operators (POGOs) in the country, amid increasing criminal activities linked to the industry.

Senate Bill 2689 seeks to repeal the taxability of offshore gaming in the country as provided by Republic Act 11590, which legitimizes POGO operations.

Gatchalian emphasized that while the POGO industry has

brought in revenue and jobs, the country has grappled with a surge in POGO-related crimes, raising concerns about the overall impact on the industry.

“The main goal is ultimately to outlaw and prohibit offshore gam-

ing operations in the country,” said Gatchalian, who chairs the Senate Committee on Ways and Means.

Several incidents have come to the Senate’s attention, including the series of police raids at POGOs in May last year.

The senator cited various atrocities attributed to the industry, which have generated public outcry for a ban on the industry, further intensified by economic costs brought by such operations.

A cost-benefit analysis conducted by the Department of Finance in 2022 showed that POGO opera-

tions generated economic benefits worth P133.7 to P144.5 billion annually due to foregone potential investments and tourism revenues, alongside costs associated with enforcement and immigration.

This resulted in a net cost of about P3.3 billion to P14 billion annually, equivalent to 0.01 percent to 0.06 percent of gross domestic product (GDP).

Gatchalian believes that POGO operations have brought more harm than good, as the economic costs greatly outweigh the benefits derived from such operations.

LTO CHIEF IDENTIFIES RANKING OFFICIAL GUNNED DOWN IN QUEZON CITY

LAND Transportation Office (LTO) Assistant Secretary Vigor Mendoza II has confirmed the identity of the agency’s gunned down official as Mercedita Gutierrez, chief of the Registration Section of the LTO Central Office.

She was the woman earlier reported to be wearing an LTO ID shot dead inside her van.

“The entire LTO family condemns in the strongest terms the killing of one of our own, Mercedita Gutierrez, in a gun attack in Quezon City on Friday, May 24,” Mendoza said in a statement.

“This is a cowardly act and we assure her family and the public of our untiring efforts to coordinate with the Philippine National Police and closely monitor the investigation of this incident to bring all the perpetrators of this crime behind bars,” he added.

Mendoza has since extended his condolences to Gutierrez’s loved ones.

The Quezon City Police District (QCPD) said an unidentified gunman onboard a motorcycle shot Gutierrez around the corner of K-H Street near Kamias Road, Brgy. Pinyahan, Quezon City on Friday night.

It also announced it has created a Special Investigation Task Group (SITG) to conduct a thorough investigation into the shooting incident.

CHINA ON PCG ITBAYAT STATION: PH SHOULD FOLLOW ONE-CHINA POLICY

CHINA said the Philippines should follow a one-China policy with the opening of a new Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) monitoring station in Batanes.

In a news briefing in Beijing, China’s Foreign Ministry Wang Wenbin called the attention of the Philippines regarding the new PCG station near Taiwan. “We urge the Philippines to stay committed to the one-China policy,” Wang said. The Philippines said Friday it had opened a coast guard post in the country’s far north to boost security

following China’s “military build-up.”

The outpost in Itbayat, Batanes “shall gather essential maritime data and intelligence, enabling the (Philippine Coast Guard) to respond effectively to threats such as illicit trade, trafficking, piracy, and foreign intrusions,” National Security Adviser Eduardo Ano said in a statement.

Año defended the new monitoring station, citing the establishment of the outpost would boost the country’s maritime awareness, especially in the northern part of the country. “The establishment of the new monitoring station is a strategic move to enhance maritime domain awareness and

strengthen security measures along Luzon Strait,” Año said.

PCG spokesperson for West Philippine Sea Commodore Jay Tarriela echoed Año’s sentiment, saying the outpost would aid in observing vessels passing through the country’s territorial waters. “It will enable effective monitoring of vessels passing through the northernmost territory of the Philippines,” said Tarriela. Lawmakers meanwhile promised to help thousands of fisherfolk in the province of Zambales pursue their fishing activities in Bajo de Masinloc and other areas despite the threat of bullying and harassment from China.

They made the commitment during the hearing of the House Committee on National Defense and Security and the Special Committee on the West Philippine Sea (WPS) on the supposed secret deal between former President Rodrigo Roa Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the state of affairs in the WPS, which is part of the country’s exclusive economic zone (EEZ). The hearing was jointly presided by Iloilo Rep. Raul Tupas, House Committee on National Defense chairman, and Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr., who read a message from Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez.

PEDESTRIANS and fitness buffs will have portions of Roxas Boulevard in Manila all to themselves on Sunday mornings starting May 26. The stretch of Roxas Boulevard from Quirino Avenue to P. Burgos Street will be closed to vehicular traffic from 5 a.m. to 9 a.m. Alternative routes have been prepared and traffic enforcers will be deployed to assist motorists.

Mayor Honey Lacuna and Vice Mayor Yul Servo will lead the “Move Manila Car-Free Sunday” launch at the corner of South Drive-Kalaw Avenue and Roxas Boulevard (beside Museo Pambata) at 5:30 a.m. There will also be a Zumba competition pitting Parent-Teachers Associations against each other. The car-free ordinance was authored by Councilor Philip Lacuna of the 6th district to allow walking, jogging, running, biking, skateboarding or roller skating without vehicles and harmful fumes.

“There will be first aid stations and water stations. If people want to have their blood pressure checked, the first aid stations will be there to do that. The water stations are there to make sure people are hydrated and protected against heat stress,” Lacuna said in a statement.

DFA REAFFIRMS REGIONAL PACT WITH STATES IN AFRICA

THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) on Saturday reaffirmed its push to further enhance partnership and cooperation with states in Africa as it spotlighted its “renewed” focus on the region.

In his message on Africa Day, Foreign Affairs Secretary Enrique Manalo acknowledged the vast opportunities with building stronger ties with the individual states of Africa.

“Despite the geographical distance, the Philippines shares common values and aspirations with Africa, including a firm belief in democracy, human rights, and sustainable development,” he said.

“Acknowledging the vastness of the opportunities that Africa represents, the Department has renewed its focus on building stronger ties with individual African nations,” he added.

Under his directive, Manalo said cooperation on various fields with bilateral partners in the region has been enhanced.

The Philippines has also intensified its presence in the African continent.

In March 2022, the DFA inaugurated its reopened embassy in Morocco, paving the way for closer cooperation with the North African state on political consultation, people-to-people, tourism, culture, and media, among others.

NOGRALES: JOBS NEEDED FOR 100K FORMER REBELS

RIZAL Rep. Fidel Nograles, chair of the House of Representatives Committee on Labor and Employment emphasized the need for the government to help ex-rebels find a decent means of livelihood to discourage them from again taking up arms against the state.

This, as the National Amnesty Commission (NAC) recently said it estimates about 100,000 former rebels would avail of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s amnesty program.

The bulk of amnesty applicants are expected to come from the Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) and the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), NAC Commissioner Nasser Marohomsalic said.

“We have to provide ample support to those granted amnesty so they can return to their families and communities with renewed hope,” Nograles said.

The lawmaker had earlier lauded the Department of Labor and Employment for providing employment assistance to around 10,000 ex-rebels through its “Tulong Panghanapbuhay Para sa ating mga Disadvantage Workers” (TUPAD) program.

He said that a stable means of livelihood would dissuade former rebels from returning to insurgency. Maricel V. Cruz

WHO: COVID CUT GLOBAL LIFE

EXPECTANCY

BY NEARLY 2 YRS

COVID-19 cut global life expectancy by almost two years when it raged from 2019 to 2021, wiping out a decade of progress, the World Health Organization said Friday.

“The COVID-19 pandemic reversed the trend of steady gain in life expectancy at birth and healthy life expectancy at birth,” the UN health agency said.

Global life expectancy fell 1.8 years to 71.4 years, the same level as it was in 2012, according to a WHO annual world health statistics study.

The amount of time the average person can expect to live in good health fell 1.5 years to 61.9 years in 2021 – also the 2012 level, the study said.

The impact was even worse than the findings of a study published by the Lancet in January, which said average life expectancy fell 1.6 years during the pandemic.

Researchers for that study said COVID-19 had a “more profound impact” on life expectancy than any other event over the past half century.

WHO director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said the figures highlighted the importance of the global pandemic security accord being negotiated in Geneva “to strengthen global health security, but to protect long-term investments in health and promote equity within and between countries.”

The Lancet researchers estimated that COVID-19 caused 15.9 million excess deaths during 2020-2021, either from the virus or pandemic-related disruption to health systems.

The WHO study said however that life expectancy did not fall in the same way around the world.

The Americas and Southeast Asia were the worst-hit regions, with life expectancy falling by about three years, it said.

The Western Pacific was the least hit, with life expectancy falling just 0.1 year.

ISRAEL STRIKES RAFAH AFTER TOP UN COURT ORDERS HALT IN OFFENSIVE

ISRAEL bombed the Gaza Strip, including Rafah, on Saturday, despite an order from the UN’s top court for it to “immediately halt” its military offensive in the southern city.

At the same time, renewed efforts are getting underway in Paris aimed at securing a ceasefire in the war sparked by Palestinian militant group Hamas’s unprecedented October 7 attack on Israel.

In a case brought by South Africa alleging the Israeli military operation amounts to “genocide,” the International Court of Justice ordered Israel to halt its Rafah offensive and demanded the immediate release of hostages still held by Palestinian militants.

The Hague-based ICJ, whose orders are legally binding but lack direct enforcement mechanisms, also instructed Israel to keep open the Rafah crossing between Egypt and Gaza,

which Israel closed before sending troops and tanks into the besieged city and crossing earlier this month.

Israel gave no indication it was preparing to change course in Rafah, insisting the court had got it wrong.

“Israel has not and will not carry out military operations in the Rafah area that create living conditions that could cause the destruction of the Palestinian civilian population, in whole or in part,” National Security Adviser Tzachi Hanegbi said in a joint statement with Israel’s foreign ministry spokesman.

Hamas, the Iran-backed Islamist group that has ruled Gaza since 2007, welcomed the ICJ ruling on Rafah but criticized its decision to exclude the rest of the Palestinian territory from the order.

In spite of the ICJ ruling, Israel carried out strikes on the Gaza Strip on Saturday morning as fighting raged

MODI’S STRUGGLING RIVALS CAST VOTE AS

TWO top rivals of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi who accuse his government of targeting them in unjustified criminal probes cast their votes in New Delhi on Saturday as the country’s six-week election resumed. Modi, 73, remains broadly popular after a decade in office and his ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is widely expected to win a third term next month after a poll hit by high summer temperatures. But accusations that the BJP has sought to sideline its opponents via the justice system have sparked concerns from UN rights chief Volker Turk and rights groups over the election’s fairness.

US, CHINA DEFENSE CHIEFS TO MEET AMID TAIWAN ISSUE

US DEFENSE Secretary Lloyd Austin will meet his Chinese counterpart, the Pentagon announced Friday, after Beijing carried out war games around Taiwan in a sign to the USbacked democracy’s new leader.

The Pentagon said that Austin would meet Chinese Admiral Dong Jun when they attend the May 31June 2 Shangri-La Dialogue, an annual gathering of defense officials around the world.

China this week encircled Taiwan with warships and fighter jets in a test of its ability to seize the island, which it claims. The drills followed the inauguration of President Lai Chingte, who has vowed to safeguard selfruling Taiwan’s democracy.

Austin’s meeting with Dong had been widely expected since they spoke by telephone in April, in what were the first substantive talks between the two powers’ defense chiefs in nearly 18 months.

President Joe Biden’s administration and China have been stepping up communication to ease friction, with Secretary of State Antony Blinken visiting Beijing and Shanghai last month. AFP

FIREFIGHTER

ARRESTED OVER DEADLY

CHILE BLAZE

A FIREFIGHTER and a forestry official were arrested in Chile on suspicion of starting a blaze that killed 137 people in the resort city of Vina del Mar in February, authorities said.

“An arrest warrant was issued today against the person who started the fires in February in the Valparaiso region,” where Vina del Mar is located, police director Eduardo Cerna told a news conference.

A little later, the Valparaiso regional prosecutor’s office confirmed the arrest of a second suspect, an official of the National Forestry Corporation (Conaf), the body responsible for fighting forest fires and managing national parks. Both men will be remanded in custody on Saturday on charges of arson resulting in deaths. Several fires broke out simultaneously on February 2 around the coastal city of Vina del Mar, 70 miles (110 kilometers) northwest of Chile’s capital Santiago. AFP

Nineteen young children and two teachers were killed in the city of Uvalde on May 24, 2022 when a teenage gunman went on a rampage with an AR-15 style assault rifle at Robb Elementary School, in America’s deadliest school shooting in a decade. The families accuse the companies of wrongful death and gross negligence, saying gun manufacturer Daniel Defense, as well as Meta-owned Instagram and Microsoft-owned Activision, whose “Call of Duty” video game features the weapon, marketed it to “insecure, adolescent boys,” according to a statement from lawyer Josh Koskoff. Koskoff insisted there was a direct line between the companies’conduct and the Uvalde shooting because the gunman purchased the weapon immediately after turning 18, the legal age in Texas to purchase long guns such as rifles. With over 15 years traversing the ever-changing hospitality landscape, Humeau has cultivated a rich and varied background in senior operational management across the globe. His journey took him to countries like the UK, China, Seychelles, Thailand and finally, the Philippines.

“I’ve been mostly in Southeast Asia. I usually go around Southeast Asian countries. Ten years ago I was with Crimson in Mactan, where I used to manage the food and beverage section,” he said, recalling how his vast experiences led him to join Red Planet in 2019.

LEADING DELIVERY APP EXPANDS MERCHANT SUPPORT WITH JIA FINANCING PARTNERSHIP

From

FOODPANDA , the online food and grocery delivery platform, linked with Jia Financing Inc. (Jia) to provide a financial boost to its partner merchants.

The collaboration falls under foodpanda’s “Negosyo Like a Panda” program, offering business loans to help merchants stock up and meet growing customer demand.

“Both foodpanda and Jia worked on crafting the loan offering to make sure that the application process is easy, repayment is hassle-free, and more importantly, the interest rate is affordable and designed to really help the business owners,” said foodpanda Philippines’ director of finance Lhecks De Castro.

The partnership specifically targets Jia’s small business vendor network who require financial resources to scale their operations.

Jia highlights the partnership as a key step in supporting their partners’ financial needs. The aim is to equip them with the tools and guidance necessary for business expansion.

Jia country manager Mark Sy Quimsiam said the financing platform intends to empower foodpanda’s merchants to thrive by making access to finance easy, affordable, and impactful.

Both startups aim to serve a wider range of partner merchants and extend loan offerings to foodpanda’s logistics delivery partners.

AS PART of its commitment to making digital financial services available to the marginalized and vulnerable, the Palawan Group of Companies partnered with the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) MIMAROPA Region. Palawan’s partnership with DOLE MIMAROPA has significantly improved and simplified the department’s disbursement processes for releasing stipends and salaries to program beneficiaries of Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD), the Special Program for Employment of Students (SPES), and the Government Internship Program (GIP).

“With Palawan Pawnshop and Palawan

Since 2019, the collaboration has benefited over 37,000 DOLE beneficiaries, including marginalized workers, financially challenged but deserving students, out-of-school youth, and other underserved communities. Because of this development, beneficiaries can now conveniently visit Palawan Pawnshop and Palawan Express Pera Padala branches in MIMAROPA or anywhere in the Philippines to cash out their disbursements via Palawan’s e-wallet app, PalawanPay. This eliminates the need for long waits to claim their funds.

His journey with Red Planet began in Indonesia, where he contributed his extensive experience as director of operations. His exceptional leadership and operational acumen were quickly recognized, leading to a promotion in July 2019 to vice president of operations for both Indonesia and the Philippines. Humeau’s unwavering commitment to Red Planet was evident in his move to Bangkok as senior vice president of operations. He leveraged his skills to oversee strategic initiatives and streamline operations across all branches. A turning point came for Red Planet and Humeau in June 2022. Recognizing his loyalty and pivotal role in the company’s growth, they elevated him to the coveted CEO position.

“The demand for domestic tourism is increasing, not only for leisure but business, as well. We see opportunities there and we want to be able to capture that,” he said.

Beyond the bustling hotel scene, Florent is a devoted family man. Despite the demanding nature of the hospitality industry, Humeau prioritizes a healthy balance between his work life and his family.

He finds joy in exploring the Philippines with his wife and children, soaking up the rich culture and stunning scenery. These experiences, he says, inspire him to create a welcoming and enriching experience for every guest at Red Planet Philippines.

With a focus on innovation, Humeau pushes the boundaries of what a budget hotel can offer, ensuring guests have a comfortable and memorable stay.

“We want to make it comfortable, convenient and affordable. We are focused on high-quality service. When people talk about budget hotels, they think budget hotels are not clean. Not in Red Planet. We have more rooms though small, but they are very clean, very accommodating to the diverse needs of our guests,” Humeau said.

Under his leadership, Red Planet strategically plans to expand the brand’s footprint in the Philippines and globally by offering professional hotel management to other hotel chains. “We need to help our clients, especially the farmers, since the prices of fuels are going up, and this program is a big help for them,” said Ralph Go, the Vice President for Sales and Business Development at Go Traktora. “This is a big incentive

Atty. Bong Suntay, the President of Cleanfuel, echoed this sentiment, stating that the collaboration is part of the company’s social responsibility efforts to support the economic recovery of the country. “The farmers, who are the main clients of Go Traktora, would be the main beneficiary here, and we are very thankful that we are now a part of this effort,” he said.

The partnership is particularly significant for the Central Luzon region, which is considered the “food bowl” of the Philippines. By providing substantial fuel discounts to farmers, the two companies are directly supporting the productivity and profitability of the agricultural sector, which is crucial for the nation’s food security and economic well-being.

“Those P2- to P3-discount to the already cheaper costs of gasoline and diesel these days is a big help among the Cleanfuel customers,” the article notes. “With the collaboration with Go Traktora, farmers can now save big per day, especially when one is using around 30 to 40 liters per day in tilling their land.”

This heartening partnership between Go Traktora and Cleanfuel serves as a shining example of how businesses can leverage their resources and expertise to uplift the lives of those in the agricultural sector, who play a vital role in the country’s development.

MARIELLE

Denise Venida, an Auckland-based sprinter, has set the athletics community abuzz with her recent performances on the track.

At just 18 years old, Venida clocked a time faster than that of the late Philippine track legend Lydia de Vega-Mercado when she was the same age, signaling a promising future for the young athlete.

The Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association (PATAFA) chief, Terry Capistrano, said that the association would be closely monitoring Venida’s progress following her impressive campaign at the recent ICTSI-Philippine Athletics Championship.

Venida clinched two gold medals at the event, including a standout performance in the women’s under-20 100-meter finals, where she clocked an impressive 11.65 seconds in the

recent ICTSI-Philippine Athletics Championship.

This clocking surpassed de Vega-Mercado’s best junior record of 11.76 seconds, set at the 1982 Asian Championships in New Delhi, which had stood as the Philippine national junior record for a long time.

“Her form was very raw, but she still won the race. We will have our team evaluate her potential and see what possibilities lie ahead,” said Capistrano.

Lydia de Vega-Mercado’s Philippine record has already been broken by Kayla Richardson, who, at 18 years old, posted an 11.70-second finish during the 2015 SEA Games.

Nevertheless, Venida’s recent performances suggest she could be the next to make her mark in

Philippine sprinting history.

Since recovering from a hamstring injury last December, Venida has been experiencing her best season yet. “I would say my best season would be this season. I was able to compete in a lot of competitions, even though I tore my hamstring last year,” Venida shared.

Aspiring to join the Philippine national squad, Venida has already competed in five meets this year, including the Philippine national championships.

On March 10, she participated in the Graeme Douglas Memorial Classic in Auckland, finishing seventh with a time of 12.05 seconds. She then won gold at the National Under-20 Championships in Wellington with a time of 11.89 seconds.

Consistent with her strong

performance, Venida secured sixth place with a time of 12.01 seconds at the Sydney Track Classic on March 23, before earning a bronze medal with a time of 11.96 seconds at the Australian U20 Championships.

With her remarkable achievements and determination, Venida is undoubtedly a rising star to watch in the world of athletics.

The future looks exceptionally bright for this talented sprinter as she continues to break records and pursue her dreams.

HOW NUTRITION AFFECTS

7 COMMON CANINE HEALTH ISSUES

NUTRITION plays a crucial role in the overall health and wellbeing of dogs, influencing everything from their energy levels to their lifespan. The right diet can help manage or even prevent several common canine illnesses. Understanding the link between nutrition and these health issues is essential for responsible pet ownership.

Regular veterinary check-ups, combined with a balanced diet tailored to individual health needs, can significantly enhance the quality of life for dogs. As always, consult with a veterinarian before making any significant changes to your dog's diet to ensure it meets their specific health requirements.

Dr. Emma Stewart, in the “7 Common Dog Illnesses That Are Impacted by Nutrition” published in the Pet Food co., said these are seven common dog illnesses significantly impacted by nutrition.

1. Obesity

Obesity is a prevalent issue in dogs, often resulting from overfeeding, poor diet, and lack of exercise. Dogs that consume high-calorie diets rich in fats and carbohydrates without adequate exercise are prone to weight gain. Obesity can lead to severe health problems, including diabetes, heart disease, and joint issues.

To combat obesity, it is important to feed dogs a balanced diet appropriate for their age, breed, and activity level. Portion control and regular exercise are key. Choosing high-quality dog food that is low in fillers and high in essential nutrients can help maintain a healthy weight. Veterinarians often recommend diets high in protein and fiber to promote satiety and lean muscle mass.

2. Diabetes

Canine diabetes is a metabolic disorder where

the dog’s body cannot produce enough insulin or effectively use the insulin it produces. This condition can be worsened by obesity and poor diet. Dogs with diabetes often require insulin injections and strict dietary management.

“A diet low in simple sugars and high in complex carbohydrates helps stabilize blood glucose levels. Consistent meal times and portion sizes are crucial. Many veterinarians suggest a high-fiber diet to slow the absorption of glucose, which can help manage blood sugar levels more effectively,” said Dr. Stewart.

3. Gastrointestinal Issues

Dogs can suffer from a variety of gastrointestinal issues, such as gastritis, colitis, and inflammatory bowel disease. These conditions can be triggered or worsened by poor nutrition, food allergies, or intolerances.

Feeding dogs a diet rich in easily digestible proteins and low in fat can help manage these conditions. For dogs with food allergies, a hypoallergenic diet free from common allergens such as beef, chicken, dairy, and grains may be necessary. Probiotics and prebiotics can also support gut health.

4. Pancreatitis

Pancreatitis, inflammation of the pancreas, can be a severe condition often caused by high-fat diets. When a dog consumes too

much fatty food, the pancreas can become overworked and inflamed, leading to pain, vomiting, and lethargy.

To prevent or manage pancreatitis, make sure to feed dogs a low-fat diet. Avoiding table scraps and fatty treats is also important.

“Some dogs may require prescription diets specifically formulated to be low in fat and easily digestible to prevent flare-ups,” Dr. Stewart noted.

5. Kidney Disease

Chronic kidney disease is common in older dogs and can be influenced by diet. Dogs with kidney disease often require a special diet to manage their condition and slow its progression. High levels of certain minerals, such as phosphorus and sodium, can heighten kidney problems.

A diet low in phosphorus and protein but high in quality protein sources can help manage kidney disease. This reduces the workload on the kidneys and helps maintain muscle mass. Hydration is also critical, wet food or adding water to dry food can help ensure that dogs with kidney disease stay properly hydrated.

6. Skin Allergies and Dermatitis

Many dogs suffer from skin allergies and dermatitis, which can be caused or worsened by food allergies or intolerances. Common culprits include

grains, certain proteins, and artificial additives.

“A diet that eliminates common allergens can significantly improve skin health. Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, found in fish oil and flaxseed, are beneficial for reducing inflammation and promoting healthy skin and coat. Feeding a diet rich in vitamins E and A can support skin health and immune function,” said Dr. Stewart.

7. Heart Disease

Heart disease in dogs, such as dilated cardiomyopathy, can be influenced by nutrition. Certain nutritional deficiencies, such as taurine deficiency, have been linked to heart problems. Feeding a well-balanced diet that includes all essential nutrients, including taurine, is crucial for heart health. Omega-3 fatty acids can also support cardiovascular health by reducing inflammation and improving blood flow. Limiting sodium intake is important for dogs with existing heart conditions to prevent fluid retention and hypertension.

AS THE temperature rises, our pets are susceptible to a potentially life-threatening condition known as heatstroke. Unlike humans, dogs and cats have limited ability to cool themselves through sweating, making it difficult for them to regulate their body temperature in hot weather. Heatstroke can be a serious and fatal condition, resulting in organ failure and, in severe cases, death, as detailed in the article "Heatstroke in Dogs and Cats" on the Royal Veterinary College (RVC) website. Numerous factors contribute to the vulnerability of pets to heatstroke. Overweight animals, breeds with flat faces such as Pugs and French Bulldogs, pets with thick coats, as well as elderly or very young animals, are particularly susceptible. Additionally, as noted in the article on the RVC website, pre-existing health conditions, particularly those impacting the airways, lungs, or heart, can heighten the risk.

Recognizing the Signs and Symptoms

Timely recognition of heatstroke symptoms is essential for immediate intervention as said by

experts from the RVC. Indications may consist of increased respiration, agitation, excessive salivation, inflamed gums, elevated heart rate, nausea, or gastric distress. As the ailment advances, animals may display fatigue, disorientation, debilitation, collapse, or convulsions.

According to the article "Heatstroke in Dogs: Signs, Symptoms, Treatments" by Harriet Meyers on the American Kennel Club (AKC) website, as the canine's exposure to elevated temperatures persists, his health worsens, displaying signs of shock such as pale mucous membranes, white or blue gums, an accelerated heart rate, and decreased blood pressure. The dog exhibits rapid breathing, leading to severe dehydration. Pupils dilate, the pulse becomes irregular, and the canine experiences muscle tremors. The First Aid to Heat Strokes

Prompt and effective first aid is crucial in addressing heatstroke. Adopting the "cooling first, transportation second" protocol is advised for dogs, which entails relocating the animal to a cool, well-aerated space, providing limited water

intake, and employing techniques such as cool/ tepid-water immersion or evaporative cooling.

These recommendations are outlined in the article from the RVC website. It is imperative to refrain from using ice-cold water, as it may impede blood circulation and worsen the condition.

It is important to promptly seek veterinary assistance, even if the pet shows signs of improvement, as hidden complications may exist. A comprehensive evaluation, which includes monitoring body temperature, is essential to evaluate the seriousness of heatstroke and begin proper treatment, as advised by experts at the RVC.

Causes of Heat Strokes

Enhancing our comprehension of the root causes of heatstroke can assist in its prevention. Meyers, in her article on the AKC website, tells us that various factors including breed, age, fitness level, weight, health conditions, and environmental factors play a role in increasing the susceptibility to heatstroke. Dogs with brachycephalic characteristics or those restricted in enclosed vehicles face an increased risk of heatstroke.

Preventing heat-related illnesses necessitates taking proactive steps. This includes offering ac-

cess to shaded areas, restricting physical activity in high temperatures, carrying water during walks, and being cautious of hot surfaces, says Meyers. Recommendations from both the RVC article, and what Meyers tells us, stress the importance of never leaving pets unattended in vehicles or in hot surroundings, providing access to clean water, and maintaining proper grooming practices to help regulate their body temperature. Understanding and identifying the warning signs of heatstroke, as well as implementing proactive measures, are vital in protecting our pets during the hot summer season. By being aware of potential risks and taking necessary precautions, pet owners can effectively ensure the wellbeing and safety of their beloved companions, allowing them to enjoy the summer weather without the risk of heat-related illnesses.

FRESHLY RELAUNCHED: NESTLÉ HOMEBAKERS CLUB WHIPS UP BUSINESS SUCCESS

IN THE same month as World Baking Day, Nestlé All Purpose Cream successfully relaunched the Nestlé Homebakers Club, an online community dedicated to empowering homebakers to enhance their skills, explore entrepreneurial opportunities, and connect with like-minded enthusiasts.

The inaugural episode of the series "Bake to Basics" was held on May 23 and streamed live on Facebook, attracting an enthusiastic audience of baking aficionados from across the country.

Hosted by Chef Jackie Ang-Po and featuring guest expert homebaker and business owner Kathy Apole-Sarmiento of KathyBakesPH, the event engaged viewers with a blend of practical baking demonstrations, insightful business advice, and Q&A sessions.

"I'm excited to be part of this amazing community!" said Chef Jackie.

"The Nestlé Homebakers Club isn’t just about baking; it's about turning your passion into a thriving business. The relaunch feels like a homecoming, where you can reconnect with experts and peers who are here to support you every step of the way. I’d love for you to join the club and get access to special content, pro tips, and feedback from fellow homebakers who share your enthusiasm,” she added.

The highlight of the event was the live bake-along session, where Chef Jackie and Kathy demonstrated how to make a classic baked macaroni and everyone’s favorite chocolate cake, respectively, perfect for those looking to start their own home baking business.

Kathy particularly shared her journey from homebaker to business owner, providing tips on mastering recipes, managing costs, and effec-

tively marketing products.

"Baking has always been my passion, and turning it into a business has been a rewarding experience," said Kathy. "My love for baking comes from my mom, who was an incredible baker. I started baking for my own family, and over time, I finetuned my skills by seeking honest feedback from friends, family, and even experts. I also utilized online resources to continually improve. Being part of an inspiring community that shares your keen interest can get you the support and resources for growth."

The interactive format allowed for real-time responses to audience questions, and rewarded participants with Homebakers Kits that included Masflex cookware and Nestle All Purpose Cream products to inspire more culinary creations. The sense of community was reinforced with

discussions on the benefits of joining the Nestlé Homebakers Club, including access to exclusive content, online classes, expert advice, and networking opportunities. Members can also initiate their own activities, like meetups and sharing culinary creations. Carina Faustino-Dy, Senior Brand Manager of Nestlé All Purpose Cream, said: "The Nestlé Homebakers Club is there to nurture the talents of homebakers and provide them with the tools they need to succeed. We are excited to see the members of this community flourish in their baking and business endeavors."

FILIPINOS have harnessed an unlikely yet effective ingredient to supplement both one's health and beauty regimen: deer placenta.

This has manifested in the likes of the health supplement V My Beauty Deer Placenta+, whose reported effects are helping to boost the immune system, improving skin condition, assisting in joint mobility, aiding in wound healing, and helping to restore vitality. According to VMB medical consultant, Dr. Cecil Catapang, the health supplement is synergized with resveratrol, squalene, collagen, lecithin, evening primrose oil, salmon fish oil, chia seed oil, borage oil, and lycopene.

“Placenta is loaded with growth factors like Fibroblast growth factor, which encourages rejuvenation of the skin. Thus, it reduces sagging and wrinkles. Placenta also leads to whitening as it suppresses the production of melanin,” Catapang said.

Aside from being FDAapproved, V My Beauty Deer Placenta+ has been recognized by different awardgiving bodies and through media features. Among these was being named by Q Asia Magazine as Best Potent Oral Stemcell

LANDCO Pacific Corporation inaugurated new hospitality and leisure facilities managed by Millennial Resorts, its hospitality arm, at the 15-hectare Resort Estates Calatagan South Beach (CaSoBe), Batangas.

NEW HOSPITALITY ATTRACTIONS AT RESORT ESTATES CALATAGAN SOUTH BEACH

“Our teams have worked hard for the past few months to complete these new and unique hospitality facilities at CaSoBe. We are truly proud of the Chairman’s Cabin for its exceptional features curated and customized for our chairman Manuel V. Pangilinan,” stated Landco Pacific Corporation and Millennial Resorts Corporation President and CEO Erickson Y. Manzano

“We are also excited to open its doors, limited to shared and common areas like the living room, kitchen, and adjacent rooms from Monday to Thursday only. We’d like our guests to have a glimpse of what it’s like to have an upscale beachfront residence at CaSoBe,” added Manzano.

The beachfront Chairman’s Cabin is launched as the crowning jewel of the leisure and hospitality attractions at CaSoBe, a haven for leisure seekers in a tourist community. This well-appointed 300 sqm villa is custom-designed for Pangilinan, chairman, Landco Pacific and its parent company Metro Pacific Investments Corporation.

With four bedrooms and modern amenities, the villa is versatile

for relaxation, social gatherings, and business meetings. It also serves as the weekend beachfront home of Mr. Pangilinan.

Within a short two to three-hour drive from Metro Manila, and having a strong WI-FI connection and modern infrastructure within its vicinity, the Chairman’s Cabin is considered the favorite seaside residence of Pangilinan.

At this villa, a restful and productive weekend break for Mr. Pangilinan means exclusive use of his private suite, access to fresh sea breeze, breathtaking sunset views, and enjoyment of Millennial Resorts amenities, balanced with work from the beach set-up.

For guest bookings, only the three bedrooms along with common area facilities of the Chairman’s Cabin are offered from Monday to Thursday. The private suite is reserved exclusively for Pangilinan.

Also launched were Cupola accommodations at CaSoBe, featuring geodesic dome shapes with private jacuzzis and baths, offering a luxurious glamping experience. Five units are now

available for beach getaways.

The 15.5-meter CaSoBe Lighthouse, with a 360-degree viewing deck, was introduced as a new landmark, guiding residents and visitors to the property.

New facilities complement existing ones managed by Millennial Resorts, including Crusoe Cabins, Cocoons, Aquaria Water Park, The Canopy events space, and Captain Barbozza restaurant.

CaSoBe, a master-planned development in Batangas, offers mixed-use residential and commercial lots. Known for its inviting beach lifestyle, the property features blue roads, street art, and easy access to local amenities and tourist attractions.

CaSoBe presents opportunities for entrepreneurs to develop hospitality and recreational businesses, catering to tourists and fostering a vibrant community. Investors can expect property value appreciation, as evidenced by Landco’s track record in Punta Fuego.

Landco Pacific has received multiple awards, including Best Leisure Real Estate Developer in the 2023 Global Economic Awards and Most Sustainable Developer in the 2023 International Investment Awards, for its commitment to highquality leisure and resort developments.

TOP AND EMERGING ACTS DEBUT ULTIMATE OPM COLLAB

AFTER weeks of building anticipation and dropping hints on their social media platforms, Puregold has finally unveiled the music video to the new song “Nasa Atin ang Panalo.”

Released on May 25, the video is a must-watch for Pinoy pop fans. It serves as the ultimate collaboration of four of the country’s top and emerging acts SB19, BINI, SunKissed Lola, and Flow G

“These four artists are the most exciting acts in the Pinoy music scene today. Collaborating with them to share a powerful brand message is a dream come true,” Ivy HayaganPiedad, senior marketing manager for Puregold, says. “Puregold is proud to celebrate their success and further uplift the OPM scene. At the same time, it’s a great privilege to support these artists in creating a song that truly captures the heart of Puregold as a company.”

The music video shows all four acts together singing and dancing along in a stylized Puregold store. They flaunt their diverse talents: harmonizing, dancing to exciting choreography, playing instrumental solos, or, in the case of Flow G, writing and rapping their own verses.

Beyond just the monumental feat of having all four mega acts in a single music video for the same song, “Nasa Atin ang Panalo” also celebrates the people of Puregold. Dancing alongside them and sharing the spotlight in the music video are the everyday shoppers and store staff that keep Puregold a running success from day to day. Puregold’s very own Aling Puring even makes an appearance to jam with the country’s biggest stars.

The song perfectly captures the “panalo” spirit that has defined Puregold’s long history

in the retail business. Beyond that, it also speaks to the “panalo” stories of the artists involved in creating it. Each one has come into this project with their own stories of success. SunKissed Lola’s relentless ascent in the industry affirms their commitment to turning dreams into reality. BINI’s growth and comingof-age narrative serves as a reminder of the profound value of transformation and evolution over time. Flow

G’s unwavering determination in the face of constant obstacles demonstrates his resilience and resolve to forge ahead. SB19’s journey, filled with triumphs and trials, is a powerful example of the ability to bounce back and confront each new day.

The collaborative song combines all of these elements in a single that can be enjoyed online now and soon on streaming platforms like Spotify.

Excitingly for Pinoy pop fans, there’s even more looming on the horizon. All four artists have al ready teased solo tracks that will soon drop with Puregold in the forthcoming weeks. Each new original song will dive further into the artists’ individual qualities that have allowed them to reach their “always panalo” dreams. Fans are encouraged to keep a close eye on Puregold’s social media accounts for further developments. -

Recipes of Love is a drama special produced by GMA Public Affairs featuring true-to-life stories that blend food and relationships. In the episode dubbed “Cabbage Lumpia,” Max and Luis are Emilissa and Jerrick, a former couple who have a daughter named Alyssa (Queenzy Calma ).

Alyssa or Chef Aiza became famous in their town in Davao for her talent in cooking at a young age.

The collection epitomizes understated elegance and timeless glamour, captured in a soft palette of neutrals and metallics. It reflects the luxurious yet subtle style of a woman who is natural, confident, and timeless.

Featuring tailored suit jackets, draped knits, suede and leather separates, and bias-cut gowns, the collection nods to Ralph Lauren’s personal inspirations. A careful balance of minimalism and artistry is achieved through embellished touches, including beads and tweeds, patchwork, and adornment.
