50 homes razed in Pasig blaze amid rising heat index

NINETEEN cars caught fire at a parking area near Terminal 3 of the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) while at least 50 houses were razed in an early morning blaze in Pasig City on Monday.

This as the weather bureau forecast temperatures to rise to as high as 45 degrees Celsius today in several parts of the country.

The Manila International Airport Authority is investigating the cause of the blaze which witnesses hinted was started by grass fire.

MIAA general manager Eric Jose Ines said no one was hurt

in the fire and flight operations at airport terminals remained unaffected by the incident.

“We don’t know yet where it started and how it started. The fire spread

quickly because of the strong wind.

Our people are still investigating. Right now, we are calling the attention of whoever is in charge here,” the airport chief said.

Ines said the damaged cars are primarily owned by airport employees.

Comelec plans to trim party-lists for 2025 polls

THE Commission on Elections said it plans to delist party-list organizations that failed to secure a seat in the House of Representatives in two recent elections in the country.

“As for existing party-lists that joined the recent polls, the Comelec will issue a resolution where those who joined and lost twice can be removed according to the Party-list Act,” Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco said.

“The Comelec will issue this soon,” he added.

Cannibalism? PNG head dismisses

Biden’s ‘loose’ talk

PAPUA New Guinea’s leader has dismissed Joe Biden’s unlikely suggestion that his uncle was eaten by cannibals there as “loose” talk that does not reflect the US president’s feelings for the country.

“Sometimes you have loose moments,” James Marape said in an interview after Biden’s contentious remarks, adding that the relationship was stronger than “one blurry moment.”

Biden said last week that his uncle Ambrose Finnegan was shot down over the Pacific nation during World War II, suggesting his body was never found because “there were a lot of cannibals” in the area.

“I’ve met him on four occasions, until today, and on every occasion he’s always had warm regards for Papua New Guinea,” Marape said.

“Never in those moments (has) he spoke of PNG as cannibals,” he added.

US defense records showed Finnegan’s courier flight was actually “forced to ditch in the ocean” off the island’s coast “for unknown reasons.”

Finnegan’s aircraft hit the water

hard and three crew members failed to emerge, while one survived and was rescued by a passing barge, the official Defense POW/MIA Accounting agency said on its website.

A search the next day found “no trace” of the missing crew, the agency said, and White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre confirmed Finnegan died when he “crashed in the Pacific,” not over land.

Biden’s cannibalism quip comes on the back of a string of recent gaffes.

Earlier this year, Biden regaled an audience with an anecdote about meeting former German chancellor Helmut Kohl in 2021 – who at that point had been dead for four years.

Days earlier he appeared to confuse long-dead French president Francois Mitterrand with current leader Emmanuel Macron.

Critics – including his Republican rival Donald Trump, himself 77 – have questioned whether the 81-year-old is sharp enough to withstand another gruelling term in office.

Biden has repeatedly asserted there are no problems with his memory or cognition. AFP

17-yr-old Indian prodigy makes chess history

A 17-YEAR-OLD from India will become the youngest player to challenge for the World Chess Championship crown after winning a major tournament in Canada.

Gukesh Dommaraju will face reigning champion Ding Liren from China for another piece of history, after being the youngest player to win the prestigious Candidates Tournament.

“I’m just so relieved, so happy following this crazy game,” Gukesh said following his landmark triumph in Toronto on Sunday.

“I was in the right mindset throughout the event. From start to end, I was in good spirits, fully motivated and I really wanted to win the event.”

Federation said. Asked how he felt about his history-making feats, the teenager said: “I don’t really care about the youngest and all these records, but it’s a nice thing to say.

“Right now I’m mostly just happy about winning the tournament.”

Gukesh became India’s youngest grandmaster when he was just 12 years, seven months and 17 days old, but missed being the world’s youngest by 17 days, according to Indian media.

Eight players competed from April 4 in Toronto, but without the Norwegian multiple world champion Magnus Carlsen.

DOJ assigns prosecutor for MFT Group fraud case

THE Department of Justice (DOJ) has designated a prosecutor to conduct the preliminary investigation of the criminal complaints filed by the Securities and Exchange Commission against the owners and officers of Maria Francesca Tan (MFT) Group of Companies, Inc. and Foundry Ventures I, Inc. for engaging in alleged illegal investment activities. Prosecutor General Benedicto Malcontento said the prosecutor has yet to issue a subpoena to the parties that would require them to appear at the DOJ for the start of the hearings.

The SEC had said it had filed with the DOJ criminal charges against MFT and Foundry Ventures for violating Sections 8, 26, and 28 of Republic Act (RA) 8799 , the Securities Regulations Code (SRC), in relation to Section 6 of RA 10175, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012. The agency also accused MFT Group of Companies and Foundry Venture of violations of Section 54.1(c), in relation to Section 54.2 of the SRC, and Section 177 of RA 11232, the Revised Corporation Code (RCC), and SRC Rule 68, in connection with material misrepresentations in their audited financial statements.

The criminal charges stemmed from complaints submitted by several investors who participated in the investment scheme of the MFT Group which later transitioned to Foundry Ventures.

It also said that the MFT Group allegedly promised guaranteed returns ranging from 12 percent to 18 percent of the amount they invested which was considered as interest income.

A motorcycle ride-hailing service rider is facing heavier punishment after trying to escape and nearly colliding with Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) traffic enforcers, who apprehended him for illegally using the lane dedicated to public utility buses. Reports showed that members of the MMDA Special Operations Group - Strike Force flagged down the rider with a passenger at EDSACubao around 8:30 a.m. The rider pulled over his motorcycle, nearly colliding with three traffic enforcers who tried to stop him.

Earlier, the Philippine Basketball Association ordered a oneday suspension against Meralco Bolts player Raymond Almazan for allegedly trying to bribe a traffic enforcer for using the EDSA Bus lane.

“This is unique in a sense that different provinces will have different prices depending on the conditions in the province such as prevailing farm gate price, remaining harvest, and most importantly the target palay procurement for the area,” he added.

The NFA abandoned a single pricing system to better compete with private traders and support local government efforts to improve farmers’ income.

The Rice Tariffication Law limits the NFA to buffer stocking for emergencies, requiring them to maintain 300,000 metric tons (MT) rice reserve, enough for approximately 9 days of consumption. Lacson said the NFA will sustain its mandate to secure sufficient supply amid persistently high farm gate prices.

Vince Lopez DENR chief: PH faces daunting challenge versus plastic wastes

DEPARTMENT

Maria Antonia Loyzaga said the country faces a deadly challenge, considering that the Philippines produces 2.7 million tons of plastic waste each year

Loyzaga, in a statement, said: “This year’s Earth Day is an urgent call to face a deadly challenge. The theme Planet vs. Plastics aims to spread awareness of the indestructibility of plastics and the hazards they pose to our health, the lives of our ecosystems, and our ability to take effective climate action.”

She said the DENR must make “ every day an Earth Day.” Loyzaga cited the Philippines’ 2.7

million tons of plastic waste per year, most of which are found in landfills, dumpsites, rivers, and water supply systems. She said 20 percent of such waste ends up in the oceans.

“Over and above our organic waste, plastic for our market needs, food wrapping and packaging for our consumers all make up the 61,000 metric tons of solid waste we produce daily.

When the rains come, we are literally swimming them,” she said.

“But on a daily basis, we consume plastics in the fish caught in our seas through the substandard water bottles we use and in the very air we breathe. Microplastics have been found in raindrops and are being studied for their impact on clouds and climate change,” she added.

BI intercepts 4 Pinay victims of trafficking

FOUR Filipino women’s dream of landing lucrative jobs in China virtually turned into a nightmare as Immigration agents disallowed them from leaving on suspicions that they were victims of human trafficking.

The women, whose names were withheld in accordance with anti-trafficking laws, were intercepted at the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) Terminal 1 after presenting themselves as tourists bound for Hong Kong.

According to the women, they were recruited by a Taiwanese woman they met online who promised them jobs as waitresses in China.

Further interrogation found out that the victims were instructed to pose as tourists and are supposed to receive their visas for China upon arrival in Hong Kong, where they would then proceed to work illegally.

Meanwhile, an Indian national was also prevented by the Immigration from leaving the country for failure to pay fines and penalties for being an overstaying foreigner.

SENATOR Aquilino Pimentel III on Monday is bent on taking his fight up to the Supreme Court (SC) over differences with the camp of former President Rodrigo Duterte on the Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban).

“The ideology of PDP-Laban, we will continue its cause even to the Supreme Court... that’s why we have our pending case there,” Pimentel said. He lamented that the other camp of PDP-laban led by Duterte, does not want to continue the political party’s ideology.

“What they wanted is to change. They made many changes. Both formal and substantive- from the party’s name, the Constitution, the oath taking,” he said.

“If they had to change the basic character of PDP-Laban, then why didn’t they just form their own political party from the very start?” Pimentel noted.

“Why forcibly take over a “left of center” political party and then bring it all the way to the “right?” he asked. Macon Ramos-Araneta

The DOLE encouraged jobseekers to prepare their application requirements such as a resume or curriculum vitae, certificate of employment for those formerly employed, diploma, and transcript of records.

Job seekers are invited to visit any of the 96 job fair sites across the regions where 1,901 participating employers will offer 154,470 job vacancies as of date.

The top vacancies this year are production workers, customer service representatives, cashiers, baggers, sales clerks, laborers, carpenters, painters, microfinance officers, financial advisers, service crew, cooks, waiters, truck drivers, nurses, property consultants, and tutors. Vito Barcelo

APRO administration lawmaker on Monday scored a group of University of the Philippines (UP) economists for opposing Congress’ initiative to amend the Constitution’s restrictive economic provisions.

“This group is anti-development, antiemployment, anti-economic progress, and anti-poor. They are trying to block economic Charter reforms which we believe will bring in more foreign direct investments (FDIs), which in turn will accelerate our country’s economic development, and create more job and income

opportunities for our people,” said Cagayan de Oro City Rep. Rufus Rodriguez, chairman of the House Committee on Constitutional Amendments. He said UP, where he obtained his law degree, is known as the bulwark of activism and academic freedom, where progressive ideas flourish.

“But its economists and other academicians should not find fault in every proposal from government, including Congress. They should not oppose just for the sake of opposing,” Rodriguez said.

In a position paper, the UP economists said instead of proposing economic Charter amendments, lawmakers should attend to more important factors that affect FDIs, including infrastructure, connectivity, corruption, and rule of law.

Rodriguez, whose undergraduate degree is AB Economics at De La Salle University graduating summa cum laude, said economic constitutional amendment proposals and other issues affecting investments are not mutually exclusive and could be addressed together.

“I do not agree that the other ingredients for attracting investments are more important than removing foreign equity restrictions in the Charter. These limitations are the root cause of the reluctance of foreign businesses to invest in our country,” he said.

He reminded the UP group that Congress has been addressing other investments-related issues by passing the necessary laws, including the recently enacted Ease of Doing Business Act, the reduction of the corporate income tax, and the grant of other tax incentives.

While criticizing the UP economists, the Mindanao lawmaker lauded the Foundation for Economic Freedom (FEF) for supporting economic Charter reform proposals.

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Monday expressed confidence in an imminent influx of American investments into the Philippines following the highly successful Philippine Dialogue in Washington D.C. to pitch the country as an attractive investment hub.

During the dialogue, Finance Secretary Ralph Recto showcased before American investors the visionary leadership of President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr. and his administration’s sound fiscal and economic policies, along with a slew of pro-business reforms that effectively rolled out the red carpet for both foreign and domestic investors.

Romualdez and Philippine Ambassador to the United States Jose Manuel Romualdez were among the guests during the event which drew around 90 executives from US-based funds and corporations, multilateral institutions, and the public sector.

“The Philippine Dialogue marked a significant milestone in our efforts to foster robust economic partnerships with the United States,” the Speaker said. He noted that during the event, several American investors with ongoing investments in the Philippines came forward to express their desire to expand their operations in the country and gave support to the government’s plans to further improve the ease of doing business in the Philippines. OPINION

Lines drawn on Marcos-Duterte

SANTA Banana, during the five times he visited China, on one occasion, then President Rodrigo Duterte had a so-called “gentlemen’s agreement” with China’s President Xi Jinping for the Philippines not to repair the rusty BRP Sierra Madre grounded at the Ayungin Shoal, which in effect compromised the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Philippines because Ayungin really is within Philippine waters at the West Philippine Sea!

We can surmise that Duterte and Xi did not talk only about Ayungin.

I am sure during those five times the former President went to China, Duterte and Xi must have talked not only about the weather.

How many times did they have a “gentlemen’s agreement?”

Ask any Chinese national about “gentlemen’s agreement,” and he will tell you that a handshake or a “gentlemen’s agreement” is as good as a written contract.

No wonder, Santa Banana, the Chinese Coast Guard and military vessels are committed to safeguarding Ayungin, all because of Duterte’s “gentlemen’s agreement” where Duterte told Xi the Philippines will not repair the BRP Sierra Madre vessel.

It’s for these reasons why there’s a need for us to know what else did Duterte and Xi agree upon.

As I said, when you talk to a Chinese national, especially to a high government official and a “gentlemen’s agreement” is reached with a handshake, it’s as good as a written agreement.

Thus, unless Duterte will tell us how many “gentlemen’s agreement” and handshakes were agreed upon, Sanata Banana, all the continued bullying and aggression China has been doing at the WPS will not stop!

I can believe Duterte must have compromised the country’s territorial integrity and sovereignty to Xi because Duterte is prone to talk about things he does not like to do.

During his six-year war against illegal drugs, how many times did we hear Duterte command the police to “kill, kill, kill” all those involved in illegal drugs that resulted in so many EJKs or extrajudicial killings?

I am not surprised that Duterte must have compromised the country in those five times he went to China.

I am not surprised that Duterte will not admit that he did anything to compromise the country .

Now Duterte wants to become a senator in 2025.

And I think he’ll make it.

And his daughter Sara also wants to become President. Santa Banana, for how long can we suffer the Dutertes?

Thus, to end speculations about those ”gentlemen’s agreement” between Duterte and Xi, Marcos re-

scinded them all.

Lines are drawn No wonder when Marcos was asked by reporters how was the UNI-TEAM doing with all the word war going on between him and his predecessor, with Duterte calling him a “drug addict,” “a spoiled child” and even a “weak leader even before the 2022 poll,” Marcos replied, “It’s complicated.”

With the continued tirades of Duterte and Marcos going on, worsened by pro-Duterte rallies where the Duterte tirades against Marcos were repeated.

In one rally attended by Sara Duterte, she was shown laughing and enjoying the tirades against Marcos, and seemed to be encouraging it.

—“—

Sara as education secretary is the President’s alter ego, and as alter ego should not be attending rallies where the President is attacked and verbally abused

Now comes the First Lady Liza Araneta Marcos saying she has drawn the line.

Undoubtedly, the first lady was hurt when heard all the insults and she made reference to her sons that when they were attacked, she was also hurt.

The Dutertes ran in 2022 under the same banner, and as such, the Dutertes should not be attacking the President, calling him names.

As a wife, the first lady was definitely hurt.

That’s why she is drawing the line because calling Marcos Jr. a drug addict is clearly out of line.

Duterte, as I said, just talks and talks without realizing the implications.

Sara as education secretary is the President’s alter ego, and as alter ego should not be attending rallies where the President is attacked and verbally abused.

Otherwise, she should resign.

I repeat, Sara should resign at the rate the President is being attacked by pro-Duterte rallies.

Sara as we know has her eyes on the presidency in 2028.

And her father wants to run for senator.

But, they should do it not at the expense of Marcos.

Good manners and good politics demand it.

As I said, should we suffer Duterte for long?

Evidentiary presumptions

THE Supreme Court explained for the first time in the case of Genio v. People the application of Section 6, Rule 131 of the Rules of Court, penned by Justice Henry Jean Paul Inting in 2024. The Court extensively discussed the nature of evidentiary presumptions in relation to the Constitutional rights of an accused.

Rommel Genio (Rommel) was charged with the crime of Bigamy for contracting a second marriage to Maricar Galapon while being legally married to Magdalena Esler Genio (Magdalena).

After the arraignment and during pre-trial the prosecution and defense

stipulated on the existence and authenticity of the Marriage Certificate between Rommel and Maricar Santos Galapon (Maricar).

During trial, the prosecution presented Magdalena who testified that she secured a copy of the Birth Certificate of the child of Rommel and Maricar, and that she also obtained from the Philippine Statistics Authority a certified true copy of the Marriage Certificate between Rommel and Maricar.

with Senate Minority Leader Koko Pimentel III when he said the Commission on Higher Education should investigate this before the Senate, in aid of legislation, makes a move.

There is a need – and the time must be now – to verify the allegations, which should include the actual number of foreign students, since vague details were used in earlier reports. Details like what is the exact number of enrolled Chinese students, among other foreign students if any, admitted in the province, in what schools are they enrolled, how much is the tuition. Pimentel is on track in chasing other details like when did this enrollment of foreign students begin, and why is it just now when the issue has surfaced. There is also the issue of local poli-

tics in the province, which should be looked into by the Senate, in the event the chamber should gear up for an inquiry on this issue of foreign students.

Given the reports, the CHED should indeed verify these and investigate as necessary and give initial figures to the Senate as required.

The National Security Council is on track when it sent intelligence officials to Cagayan to monitor if there are national security threats involved

We are also disturbed by reports from the Bureau of Immigration that 1,500 nationals got student visas in Cagayan after being “legally processed” – with reports from the Tuguegarao City mayor Maila Ting Que say-

CHINA’S latest diatribe against the Philippines is not just a diplomatic dispute; it’s a glaring display of hypocrisy and an affront to reason.

In their latest tirade, the Chinese foreign ministry had the audacity to accuse the Philippines of stirring trouble in the region, all while conveniently ignoring their own aggressive actions and expansionist agenda.

Let’s dissect this delusional rhetoric piece by piece.

China has the temerity to claim that the Philippines is breaching agreements and provoking conflicts, yet it conveniently forgets its own excessive maritime claims and militarization of reclaimed features in the South China Sea.

The gall!

They have the nerve to lecture about good-neighborliness while bullying smaller nations and trampling on their sovereignty.

Their spokesman, Lin Jian, has the gall to suggest the Philippines should reflect on its actions, conveniently overlooking China’s belligerence and disdain for international law.

of three witnesses. Rommel did not deny the existence of the Marriage Certificate issued for his subsequent (second) marriage to Maricar.

“However, the defense argued that Rommel’s second marriage was void ab initio because it was never solemnized by the Municipal Mayor of Guimba, Nueva Ecija, and there was no wedding ceremony to celebrate the marriage.

“Hence, Rommel may not be convicted of Bigamy because of the absence of the fourth element of the crime…”

—“—

The Supreme Court disagreed with the RTC and the CA, and declared that ‘[t]he prosecution’s evidence is insufficient to warrant Rommel’s conviction for Bigamy’

ing the scrutiny of Chinese students in her capital city is “unfair and insulting.”

CHED, in a statement last week, said there is “a significant number” of Chinese students enrolled at Saint Paul University Philippines, which is found in the city of Tuguegarao, and like other autonomous universities are authorized to accept foreign students.

The university’s website says SPUP is a Center for Excellence in Nursing and in Teacher Education, and is a Center for Development in Information Technology.

The National Security Council is on track when it sent intelligence officials to Cagayan to monitor if there are national security threats involved, NSC Assistant Director General Jonathan Malaya had said.

The Bureau of Immigration earlier said the 1,500 Chinese nationals who received student visas in 2023 were “legally processed” and had “complete documentation.”

We look forward to additional reports on the matter, given the security issues involved.

Betrayal of reason: China’s blatant hypocrisy

It takes a special kind of arrogance to accuse others of provocation while unleashing water cannons and blockades on Filipino soldiers stationed on their own territory.

China’s hypocrisy knows no bounds.

—“—

They have the nerve to lecture about good-neighborliness while bullying smaller nations and trampling on their sovereignty

Furthermore, China’s attempt to undermine the Philippines’ alliance with the United States is not just a diplomatic maneuver; it’s a blatant disregard for the principles of peace and stability.

The Philippines has every right to seek support from its allies in the face of Chinese aggression.

To chastise the Philippines for turn-

Certificate to be signed by Rommel and Maricar… [and] there was no exchange of vows and wedding rings between Rommel and Maricar…”

“[T]he RTC rendered its Judgment… convicting Rommel of Bigamy upon the finding that all the elements thereof have been duly proven by the prosecution beyond reasonable doubt.

“The RTC explained that the testimonies of the defense witnesses cannot prevail over the prosecution’s documentary evidence, which consisted of public records…”

On appeal to the Supreme Court after the Court of Appeals affirmed Rommel’s conviction by the RTC.

“Rommel argues that his marriage to Maricar was not officiated by a person who is duly authorized to solemnize marriages, considering that the Municipal Mayor of Guimba, Nueva Ecija, never appeared on September 7, 2013… [and] Rommel further submits that [there was] no marriage ceremony…”

ing to the US for help, instead of engaging in futile dialogue with a neighbor hell-bent on territorial expansion, is not just absurd—it’s insulting.

Let’s not forget the Philippines’ courageous stance during the historic trilateral summit with the US and Japan, where they stood up to China’s bullying tactics and reaffirmed their commitment to regional peace and stability.

It’s time for China to acknowledge the Philippines’ legitimate concerns and engage in meaningful dialogue instead of resorting to empty threats and coercion.

China’s hypocritical stance and aggressive rhetoric only serve to undermine regional stability and fuel tensions in the South China Sea.

It’s high time for China to abandon its expansionist agenda, respect international law, and engage in genuine diplomacy with its neighbors.

The path to peace and stability lies not in coercion and intimidation but in dialogue and mutual respect.

It’s time for China to wake up and smell the ashes of their diplomatic folly before it’s too late.

that the issues in the present case are founded on the prosecution’s use of an evidentiary presumption against Rommel, i.e., that the Marriage Certificate, being a public record, is prima facie evidence of its contents, and may therefore serve as proof that the second marriage has all the essential requisites for its validity.”

(To be continued) (Part 1)

In the Marriage Certificate of Rommel and Maricar, it was stated that the two were married on Sept. 7, 2013, before the Mayor of Guimba, Nueva Ecija, at his office and in the presence

Two other witnesses aside from Maricar testified that “she did not see the Municipal Mayor in attendance, but she saw her relatives and an employee from the Municipal Hall of Guimba, who prepared the Marriage

“[T]he sole issue before the [Supreme] Court is whether the prosecution was able to discharge its burden of proving beyond reasonable doubt that the second marriage, i.e., that between Rommel and Maricar, has all the essential and formal requisites for its validity, thus warranting Rommel’s conviction for the crime of Bigamy.”

“The proceedings a quo [in the Regional Trial Court] readily reveal

“Both the RTC and the CA relied on the Marriage Certificate in holding that the prosecution was able to prove, beyond reasonable doubt, that Rommel committed Bigamy.” The Supreme Court disagreed with the RTC and the CA, and declared that “[t]he prosecution’s evidence is insufficient to warrant Rommel’s conviction for Bigamy.” “Section 6, Rule 131 of the Rules of Court, as amended by A.M. No. 19-08-15-SC, 82 or the 2019 Amendments to the Revised Rules on Evidence, embodies the rule that must be observed by the prosecution when it seeks to utilize an evidentiary presumption to establish the guilt of the accused, viz: SEC. 6. Presumption against an accused in criminal cases.

-- If a presumed fact that establishes guilt, is an element of the offense charged, or negates a defense, the existence of the basic fact must be proved beyond reasonable doubt and the presumed fact follows from the basic fact beyond reasonable doubt.”

Unprecedented Trump trial moves to opening statements

NEW YORK – The unprecedented trial of Donald Trump moves to opening statements Monday, kickstarting weeks of embarrassing evidence centered on a porn star and alleged fraud that will overshadow the Republican presidential candidate’s attempt to retake the White House.

The Manhattan trial poses a big risk for Trump less than seven months before election day.

Prosecution witnesses are expected to include porn performer and director Stormy Daniels and Trump’s disgraced, longtime former lawyer and fixer Michael Cohen, guaranteeing a less-than-savory look at the 77-year-old tycoon’s personal and business habits.

N. Korea fires ballistic missile into East Sea –Seoul military

SEOUL – North Korea has fired an unidentified ballistic missile into the sea off South Korea’s east coast, Seoul’s military said Monday, the latest in an apparent volley of tests by Pyongyang this year.

“North Korea has fired an unidentified missile into the East Sea,” South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff said, referring to the body of water also known as the Sea of Japan.

Tokyo also confirmed the launch, with the Japanese defense ministry saying “a suspected ballistic missile was launched from North Korea” in a post on X, formerly Twitter.

Japan’s coast guard, citing the defense ministry, said shortly after the initial announcement that the missile appeared to have already fallen.

Japanese media including public broadcaster NHK reported that the suspected missile fell outside Japan’s Exclusive Economic Zone, citing unnamed government sources.

Seoul-based specialist site NK News said that the “brief flight time, likely under ten minutes, points to the launch involving a short-range ballistic missile or 600mm multiple launch rocket system (MLRS).”

The latest launch comes after UN sanctions monitoring against the nuclear-armed nation was upended last month by Russia.

Pyongyang’s ally Moscow in March used its United Nations Security Council veto to effectively end UN monitoring of violations of the raft of sanctions on Kim Jong Un’s government for its nuclear and weapons program.

On Friday, North Korea tested a “super-large warhead” designed for a strategic cruise missile, state media said, with Seoul’s military confirming it had detected cruise missile launches around the same time.

Unlike their ballistic counterparts, the testing of cruise missiles is not banned under current UN sanctions on North Korea.

Cruise missiles tend to be jet-propelled and fly at a lower altitude than more sophisticated ballistic missiles, making them harder to detect and intercept. AFP

Rockets fired from northern Iraq at US-led coalition base in Syria

BAGHDAD –Rockets were fired late Sunday from northern Iraq at a military base in Syria housing a USled coalition, according to Iraqi security forces.

In response, the Iraqi forces launched a major search operation in northern Nineveh province and found the vehicle used in the attack, they said in a statement. It is the first major attack against the

coalition forces in several weeks.

It comes days after Israel reportedly responded to an Iranian attack with a drone strike on the Islamic republic, amid tensions fueled by the Gaza war.

The statement from the Iraqi security forces accused “outlaw elements of having targeted a base of the international coalition with rockets in the heart of Syrian territory”, at around 9:50 pm.

The security forces burned the vehicle involved in the attack, the statement added.

Rami Abdel Rahman, director of the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights

war monitor, said several rockets had been fired “from Iraqi territory at the Kharab al-Jir base” in northeast Syria, where US forces are stationed. He accused the Islamic Resistance in Iraq, a loose alliance of Iran-backed groups, of staging the attack.

The group has claimed most of the attacks on US forces carried between mid-October and early February.

Following a series of rocket attacks and drone strikes by pro-Iran armed factions against US soldiers deployed in the Middle East over the winter, there had been several weeks of calm.

Israel army says military intelligence chief resigns

JERUSALEM – The Israeli military said Monday the chief of its intelligence directorate has resigned after taking responsibility for failures leading to the unprecedented Oct. 7 attack by Hamas.

Major General Aharon Haliva is the first high-ranking official to step down for failing to prevent the attack that shocked Israel and the international community.

“Major General Aharon Haliva, in coordination with the chief of the general staff, has requested to end his position, following his leadership responsibility as the head of the intelligence directorate for the events of Oct. 7,” the military said in a statement.

“It was decided that MG Aharon Haliva will end his position and retire from the IDF (army), once his successor is appointed in an orderly and professional process.”

In his resignation letter, Haliva took responsibility for failing to prevent the attack.

“On Saturday, Oct. 7th 2023, Hamas committed a deadly surprise attack against the state of Israel,” he wrote in the letter, a copy of which was given to journalists by the military.

“The intelligence division under my command did not live up to the task we were entrusted with.

“I carry that black day with me ever

since. Day after day, night after night. I will forever carry with me the terrible pain of the war.”

The Hamas attack resulted in the deaths of 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures.

Since then, Israel has vowed to eliminate Hamas and is engaged in a blistering assault against the militant group which rules the Gaza Strip.

The Palestinian territory’s health ministry said 34,097 people have been killed in Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, most of them women and children. AFP

Thousands evacuated as storms strike south China

BEIJING – Eleven people are missing following storms that battered southern China, state media said Monday, with tens of thousands evacuated away from the torrential downpours.

Heavy rain has descended upon the vast southern province of Guangdong in recent days, swelling rivers and raising fears of severe flooding that state media said could be of the sort only “seen around once a century”.

“A total of 11 people are missing after continuous heavy rainfall hit many parts of (Guangdong) in recent days,” state news agency Xinhua said, citing the local emergency management department.

More than 53,000 people have been relocated across the province, it added. Of those, more than 45,000 were evacuated from the northern Guangdong city of Qingyuan, which straddles the banks of the Bei River, a tributary in the wider Pearl River Delta, state media reported Sunday.

Heavy rain is expected to continue on

Monday, with meteorological authorities forecasting “thunderstorms and strong winds in Guangdong’s coastal waters” -- a stretch of sea bordering major cities including Hong Kong and Shenzhen.

Neighboring provinces, including parts of Fujian, Guizhou and Guangxi, will also be affected by “short-term heavy rainfall”, the National Meteorological Center said.

“It is expected that the main impact period of strong convection will last from daytime until night,” it added.

Guangdong province is China’s densely populated manufacturing heartland, home to around 127 million people.

In the town of Jiangwan, six people were injured and a number were trapped in landslides caused by heavy rain on Sunday, state media reported. Photographs published by

said it is acting in solidarity with Palestinians and out of anger at US support for Israel in the Gaza war.

A January 28 drone attack killed three US soldiers in the Jordanian desert on the Syrian border.

In response, the US military struck dozens of targets in Syria and Iraq, aiming for pro-Iran forces, and drawing criticism from the governments of both countries.

United States has around 2,500 soldiers stationed in Iraq and nearly 900 across the border in Syria as part of an international coalition created in 2014 to fight the Islamic State group. AFP

Taiwan thanks US for aid package, will ‘secure peace’

TAIPEI – Taiwan will work with the United States to “safeguard peace and freedom” in the region, the island’s premier said Monday, after Washington approved billions in military aid for Taipei in the face of an increasingly assertive China.

The US House of Representatives on Saturday passed four bills in a $95 billion package, approving military aid to Ukraine and bolstering Israel’s defenses.

Some $8 billion under one bill would be used to counter China, which claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has vowed to bring the democratic island under its control.

Taiwan’s defence ministry said Sunday that about $1.9 billion is earmarked for replenishing its military equipment and training and another $2 billion will used for “foreign military financing” for countries in the region including Taiwan. The announcement also comes days before US Secretary of State Antony Blinken visits China, hoping to press Beijing to curb wartime support for Russia.

“A peaceful and stable Taiwan Strait is a most important key to peace and prosperity in the world,” Taiwanese Premier Chen Chien-jen said Monday.

“Taiwan will continue to work with like-minded countries including the United States and all countries in the free democratic camp... to safeguard peace and freedom in the Indo-Pacific region and make the Taiwan Strait area more stable,” he added.

The 180-kilometer waterway separates Taiwan from China and is among the world’s busiest shipping routes.

It is also a hotspot of tensions between Beijing and Taipei, as relations have plummeted since 2016 after Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen came into power.

She has refused to acknowledge Beijing’s claim over the island, saying instead that Taiwan is “already independent”, and during her two terms has bolstered defence spending for the island’s armed forces.

Her office on Sunday thanked the US Congress for approving the bills, which “shows that the United States’ security commitment to Taiwan has a clear bipartisan consensus,” said Presidential spokeswoman Olivia Lin.

Washington’s top diplomat Blinken’s trip marks a lowering of US-China friction that soared under former president Donald Trump. High on his agenda will be what US officials say is a major push by China that has helped Russia, in the throes of the Ukraine invasion, carry out its biggest militarisation since Soviet times. Coach Dante Alinsunurin may consider strategic lineup changes in the face of top spiker Kat Tolentino’s continued absence, focusing on developing new combinations for the semis.

Farm Fresh (3-7), meanwhile, is also determined to end its campaign on a high note, promising an intriguing matchup set at 6 p.m. Nxled and Capital1, on the other hand, tangle at 4 p.m. with the Chameleons seeking to improve their 4-6 record and the Solar Spikers seeking to nail their second win in 10 games.

Serbia’s Jokic is an MVP finalist for the fourth straight season while France’s Victor Wembanyama is in the running for both Rookie of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year honors. Jokic, who led the Nuggets to the title in 2023, won the MVP in 2021 and 2022 and finished runner-up in voting behind Joel Embiid of the Philadelphia 76ers last season. This season Jokic averaged 26.4 points, 12.4 rebounds and 9.0 assists for Denver, which finished tied atop the Western Conference with Gilgeous-Alexander’s Thunder but are seeded second in the playoffs as the Thunder own the tiebreaker.

San Antonio’s sensational Wembanyama in the battle for Rookie of the Year. Wembanyama set a slew of records in his first NBA season, averaging 21.4 points, 10.6 rebounds, 3.9 assists, 3.6 blocks and 1.2 steals, while Holmgren averaged 16.5 points and 7.9 rebounds for Oklahoma City after missing the 2022-23 season with a foot injury.

Gilgeous-Alexander averaged 30.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, 6.2 assists and 2.0 steals this season. Doncic led the league in scoring, averaging 33.9 points, to go along with 9.2 rebounds and 9.8 assists for the Mavs. Gilgeous-Alexander’s teammate Chet Holmgren and Charlotte Hornets forward Brandon Miller joined

Miller averaged 17.4 points and made 184 three-pointers this season. Minnesota Timberwolves center Rudy Gobert, a three-time Defensive Player of the Year, is again among the finalists for the award alongside French compatriot Wembanyama and Miami Heat center Bam Adebayo. Gobert led Minnesota to the league’s best defensive rating and averaged 12.9 rebounds and 2.1 blocks.

Bulldogs dethrone Archers in UAAP baseball

NATIONAL University dethroned back-to-back champion DeLa Salle University ,4-2, in Game 2 of the University Athletic Association of the Philippines Season 86 men’s baseball finals at the UP Baseball Field in Diliman, Quezon City.

Dead serious in finishing the series via a sweep, the deadly Bulldogs poured in two runs at the bottom of the first inning, but the 3-peat seeking Green Batters answered two runs, one each in the 3rd and 4th to tie the game.

Staring at a 2-2 deadlock in the 6th frame, the Bustillos-based sluggers then roared to 2-run lead, capitalizing on the errors by pressured DLSU.

The Bulldogs, who won their Game 1 encounter, 8-4, to gain momentum, then braced for the big one.

With one out down, Bulldog John Calanday pushed a hit in the middle where La Salle 2nd baseman JR Samuel forced an error that put a runner on first. Back-to-back errors by the Green Batters resulted on pinch-runner Cyrill

Antipolo and Kevin Maulit crossing the homeplate for the differential runs. The NU annihilation was finally stopped when Samuel caught the ball at the middle to possibly extend their quest for a dynasty in a rubber match Game 3. But the defense that became the bread and butter of the Sampaloc demolishers forced the Taft kings of the diamond to relinquish their crown to the new rulers of the UAAP baseball throne. “Big D was the key, especially in the crucial inning. Hindi bumigay sa pressure ang mga bata at ang binigay nila ay todo para makamit ng team ang misyon naming tagumpay ngayong season,” said champion coach Romar Landicho, a first timer, who sent his team to championship for the first time since 2012.

“Maraming salamat sa aking mga katuwang sa tagumpay na sina deputy coaches Robin Go, Junemer Diarao, Mon Espino, our bos Sir Wopsy Zamora and motivation chief Rey Sol for Corpido, Carolino, Calanday and Camposanto.

THERE’S a new Lee who’s set to make waves in ONE Championship.

Adrian Lee, the youngest member of the respected Hawaiian-based Lee martial arts family, makes his ONE debut against Antonio Mammarella at ONE 167: Stamp vs. Zamboanga inside the Impact Arena in Bangkok, Thailand, on June 8.

The 18-year-old looks to follow in the footsteps of his siblings in former ONE Atomweight MMA World Champion Angela Lee, current ONE Lightweight and Welterweight MMA World Champion Christian Lee, and late sister Victoria Lee. The youngster comes in with a strong amateur

Adebayo, one of the league’s most versatile big men, averaged 10.4 rebounds plus a steal and a block per game, while Wembanyama became a block and steal machine as a rookie, especially after shifting to center full-time midway through the season. The field for Most Improved Player includes 76ers guard Tyrese Maxey, Chicago Bulls guard Coby White and Houston Rockets center Alperen Sengun.

Mark Daigneault of Oklahoma City, the Timberwolves’ Chris Finch and the Orlando Magic’s Jamahl Mosley are the nominees for Coach of the Year. The winners of the awards, elected by a global panel of sportswriters and broadcasters, will be announced during the playoffs, starting on Tuesday. AFP

While Petro Gazz is already assured of a semifinal spot, Creamline and Chery Tiggo need to secure wins to solidify their positions.

PLDT’s slim chance for advancement depends on specific outcomes, underscoring the high stakes as the tournament heads to its last three elims playdates.

MMA background and state wrestling championship under his belt. But perhaps it’s the experience of training with his older brother Christian on a daily basis that gives Lee his biggest advantage, especially since he’s competing in the lightweight division. He’ll definitely be tested in his debut against Mammarella, as the 24-year-old Aussie is also looking to make a name in ONE debut just like his teammates Coopar Royal and Faine Mesquita have. Rodtang Set To Return Lee hasn’t been the only name added to the card headlined by the ONE Atomweight MMA World Title clash between Stamp Fairtex and #2-ranked

contender Denice Zamboanga. Reigning ONE Flyweight Muay Thai World Champion Rodtang Jitmuangnon makes his return, this time under kickboxing rules against Denis Puric. This is Rodtang’s first match in the promotion since suffering his first loss in ONE’s striking arts in September of last year when he dropped a decision to ONE Flyweight Kickboxing World Champion Superlek Kiatmoo9. His return won’t come any easier as he faces a rejuvenated Puric, who recently scored a big win over #2-ranked flyweight Muay Thai contender Jacob Smith at ONE Fight Night 21.

Korda withstood a tension-packed back nine but never lost her lead in holding off rivals over the closing holes at Carlton Woods in suburban Houston to claim the $1.2 million top prize in the first women’s major tournament of the season.

“I can finally breathe now. That back nine felt like the longest back nine of my entire life,” Korda said.

“It was a little bit of a grind on the back nine but happy to get the win.”

The 25-year-old American fired a three-under par 69 in the final round to finish on 13-under 275 after 72 holes. Stark was second on 277 after a closing 69 followed by American Lauren Coughlin and Canada’s Brooke Henderson sharing third on 278 and South Korean Ryu Hae-ran fifth on 279 after closing on 74.

Korda, the daughter of former Czech tennis star Petr Korda, won her only prior major crown at the 2021 Women’s PGA Championship while also capturing a gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics.

This year, Korda also won January’s Drive On Championship, last month’s Seri Pak and Ford championships and the LPGA Match Play earlier this month.

“There’s a key in the simplicity that I have. I honestly take it a shot at a time,” Korda said. “It has been working so far. I feel like sometimes golf can get overcomplicated.” There were plenty of late complications. AFP

Adamson, UST stay unbeaten in UAAP girls’ beach volley

UNIVERSITY of Santo Tomas and Adamson University bested separate foes to remain unbeaten Sunday in the UAAP Season 86 High School Girls Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Sands SM By The Bay.

Khy Progella and Cameron Grace Villaluz overwhelmed National University Nazareth School’s Vilmarie Toos and Laiza Benigay, 21-11, 21-11, to give the Junior Tiger Sands a 2-0 record.

The Baby Falcons also logged their second straight victory, but Shai Nitura and Fel Sagaysay went through the wringer before beating Far Eastern University-Diliman’s Frenchie Premaylon and Love Lopez, 14-21,2115, 15-11.

The Baby Tamaraws, who used Sheena Cafe in the one-hour, 14-minute match, dropped to 2-1 in third spot. Ateneo entered the win column as Ten Quimpo and Abigail May Martija subdued UP Integrated School’s Khloe Long and Janella Guarino, 2113, 21-15.

The Blue Eagles moved in a tie with the Bullpups in fourth place at 1-2.

De La Salle-Zobel, as Aislinn Alemaña and Katrina Tria who drew a Sunday bye, has a 1-1 record in fourth place.

In the boys’ division, there is a fiveway logjam on top between University of the East, NUNS, FEU-Diliman, UST, and Adamson. Jan Macam, Xyrone Montemayor, and third player Anhril Cuadra beat UPIS’s Juan Miguel Navarro and Japeth Ben Casabar, 21-13, 2110.

Adamson dealt defending champion FEU-D its first loss as Tommy Castrodes, CJ Dominquito, and third player Brandy Clemente outlasted Kyle Tandoc and Amet Bituin, 11-21, 21-18, 15-13.

UST posted its second straight win after an opening day defeat as John Michael Lagaran and Lance Malinao nipped NUNS’ John Wayne Dionela and Rain Skyler Gemarino, 21-18, 21-18.

PHILIPPINE team aspirant Victoria Bossong, who plans to compete in Manila this May, surpassed the Philippine record in the women’s 400-meters over the weekend.

The 20-year-old Bossong, a third year medical student at Harvard University, clocked 52.16 seconds for the gold medal last Sunday in the 2024 Tiger Track Classic meet in Auburn, Alabama.

Rondajai Washington was behind the Fil-American Bossong for the silver in 54.96 seconds, while Latiana Acker, a South Alabama state champion, got the bronze in 55.25 seconds.

PH’s Vayson scores unanimous verdict, keeps WBO light fly title

JAYSON Vayson of the Philippines delivered a commanding performance in Osaka, Japan over the weekend, retaining his World Boxing Organization’s Asia-Pacific light flyweight title.

In a hard-fought bout against the 10th-ranked challenger, Takeru Inoue of Muto Boxing Gym, Vayson emerged victorious in a 10-round unanimous decision.

The pivotal moment came in the 10th round when Vayson landed a crucial knockdown against the Japanese to secure the unanimous win.

went past the national mark owned by Kayla Richardson. Richardson set and currently keeps the Philippine record she made in 2017 when she ran in 53.81 seconds at the Mt. San Antonio College Relays. A sprinter who recently shifted to middle distance events and is competing in Division 1 NCAA athletics meets in the Eastern region of the United States, Bossong hopes to be part of the Philippine national team in the Paris Olympics, when she meets the entry standard in the women’s 800-meters.

Bossong’s clocking was more than two seconds lower than when she took the gold medal in the Kirk Baptiste Spring Break Meet women’s 400-meters last March 14.

PATAFA secretary general Jasper Tanhueco confirmed Bossong’s

However, no deductions were made, allowing Vayson to continue his pursuit of victory.

The judges scored the contest 97-93, 96-94, and 96-94, all in favor of Vayson, marking his first successful title defense. With this win, Vayson’s professional record improved to 12 wins, 1 loss, and

plans, as she is listed to join other Filipino-American Olympic hopefuls like Lauren Hoffman in the ICTSI Philippine Athletics Championships that will happen on May 8 to 12 at the PhilSports oval in Pasig. Bossong ran the 800-meter finals of the Pepsi Florida Relays in the last week of March in two minutes and 92/100ths of a second for a gold medal -- a clocking which was close to the Olympic entry standard time of 1:59.30.

The 24-year-old Hoffman, who recently shattered the 100m hurdles’ record, is one of the national team mainstays with a chance of making the Paris cut in the five-day meet. Olympic ranking points from the World Athletics will be at stake during the competition, which will see 700 participants from at least nine countries.

Strategic decision-making will play a pivotal role in navigating the challenges of the $100,000 championship, set against the backdrop of the demanding 6,362-yard Robert Trent Jones, Sr.-designed course renowned for its risk-and-reward, well-kept layout.

For PK Kongkraphan, this tournament marks a chance to fulfill an unfinished business after falling short in last year’s Anvaya Cove Ladies International, also a TLPGA-Ladies Philippine Golf Tour co-sanctioned event in Morong, Bataan. Meanwhile, Princess Superal

determined to bounce back from a final round slip at Caliraya Springs, eager to witness the fruits of her labor in refining her driving technique even as she aims to elevate her performance in time for the resumption of her campaign on the Japan Step Up Tour.

Ahead of this event, sponsored by ICTSI and organized by Pilipinas Golf Tournaments, Inc., Superal’s preparations have been nothing short of rigorous.

The former US Girls’ Junior titlist hopes to capitalize on her local knowledge of the layout as she faces a tough first round draw, pitting skills with Yu-Ju Chen of Taiwan and Thai Chonlada Chayanun at 8 a.m. on No. 1.

“We’re more familiar with Luisita, so we’ll see how it goes,” said Superal, whose last triumph dates back to 2022 in the Asia Pacific Cup in Indonesia where she triumphed over several major champions on the LPGA Tour. “Nonetheless,

we’ll give it our best shot.”

Armed with a stellar record, including victories in the Hangzhou Asian Games last year and 23 professional titles to her name, the 32-year-old Kongkraphan enters the competition with confidence.

Despite the unfamiliarity of the course, Kongkraphan is optimistic, drawing parallels to her recent experience in Thailand.

Opting to skip yesterday’s proam tournament to fine-tune her skills, she remains undeterred by the scorching weather, expressing readiness to tackle the course’s challenges.

“This is a new course for me, but the conditions are similar back home. So I think, I can have a good score here,” said Kongkraphan, who drew compatriot Alisara Wedchakama and Korean Minyeong Kim at 8:55 a.m. on No. 10. “Luisita is a little bit shorter, so there’s a big chance to playing well this week.”

1 draw, with six knockouts. Vayson was accompanied by his veteran trainer-coach, Alan Alegria, a former Philippine welterweight champion. He bagged the WBO regional title last December with a second-round technical knockout win against Ryuya Yamanaka in Kobe, Japan.

He is currently ranked No. 3 in the International Boxing Federation’s (IBF) light flyweight division, as well as No. 8 in the WBO and No. 10 in the World Boxing Association (WBA). His opponent, Takeru Inoue, not related to world champion Naoya Inoue, is a former policeman with the Osaka Prefectural Police. Despite a valiant effort, Inoue suffered his first defeat after turning professional in October 2022, following four consecutive wins, two by knockout.

PEZA approves P30b worth of investments

THE Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) said Monday it approved P30 billion worth of investments as of April 19, 2024.

PEZA director-general Tereso Panga said the PEZA board approved 73 new and expansion projects. These are expected to contribute $1.095 billion in exports and create 14,812 new jobs.

“PEZA’s approved projects will result in mutualistic benefits for international relations and continually champion the Philippines as Asia’s premier investment destination,” Panga said.

PEZA said that newly-approved projects in April alone would generate P15 billion in investments for the second quarter, create over 3,200 new jobs and generate $69.778 million in exports.

The projects span various sectors including export manufacturing, ITBPM, facilities, logistics and ecozone development.

Majority of the projects are located in CALABARZON, Metro Manila, Bicol and Central Luzon, with some in the Visayas and Mindanao.

The PEZA board recently toured First Philippine Industrial Park (FPIP) in Makati City and lauded FPIP locators Collins Aerospace Philippines and Philippine Manufacturing Co. of Murata (Murata Philippines) for their contributions. Othel V. Campos

“We are delighted to revive our Clark-Basco service commencing in the third quarter of 2024. Convenient connectivity is essential for travelers who wish to experience our islanddestinations. We will endeavor to reopen more routes out of Clark as we continue to grow our network from Central Luzon,” said PAL president and

“We appreciate the support of Clark LIPAD [Luzon International Premiere Airport Development ] as we expand our Clark operations,” he said.

The Clark-Basco route will operate four times weekly via PR 2688 every Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday. It will departing Clark International Airport at 11 a.m. and arrive in Basco at 12:35 p.m.

Filipino manufacturer challenges multinational monopoly

A FILIPINO manufacturer that supplied hospitals and supermarkets with disinfectants during the pandemic is now challenging the dominance of multinational companies in the dishwashing liquid market. Kohl Industries Corp., a Pasig City-based producer of personal care and household products, wants to offer Filipino consumers more affordable options, said company president Aton Atilano. “We want to break the dominance of multinationals in our domestic market,” Atilano, a former investment banker, said in an interview. “They control a large share of the market.” Atilano named his company after Helmut Kohl, the first chancellor of

reunified Germany. He teamed up with former senator and basketball legend Robert Jaworski in the 1990s to produce isopropyl and ethyl alcohol under the Doctor J brand. He then established Kohl Industries in 2022.

The company, which employs about 300 workers, produces brands such as Doctor J, Oramed, Bactigel and Mighty Mom antibacterial dishwashing liquid. It also manufactures antiseptics, disinfectants, household cleaning agents, medical devices, diagnostics, cosmetics and personal care items. Kohl Industries is a Food and Drug Administration-certified Current Good Manufacturing Practice (CGMP) facility. CGMP ensures proper design, monitoring, and con-

trol of manufacturing processes.

During the pandemic, the company supplied hygiene products to hospitals to protect patients and staff. As the market for antiseptic products stabilizes, Kohl Industries is promoting its Mighty Mom dishwashing liquid to offer Filipinos a more affordable option amid rising inflation.

“Our goal is to let the market know that there are existing products that can compete with the leading dishwashing liquid brands sold at very high prices,” Atilano said. “We offer an alternative, but it doesn’t mean it’s of lower quality.

“We are happy to welcome the revival of the Clark to Basco route by Philippine Airlines. This renewed connection not only signifies the strengthening of ties between two vibrant destinations but also underscores the importance of Basco in the growth of Clark International Airport (CRK),” said LIPAD president and chief executive Noel Manankil.

“With this renewed route, Philippine Airlines, thru CRK, continues to play a pivotal role in promoting tourism and fostering connections across our country,” he said.

PH signs World Bank’s emergency nancing

FINANCE Secretary Ralph Recto secured the country’s position as the first to sign the Rapid Response Option (RRO) agreement with the World Bank Group (WBG). RRO is part of the WBG’s Expanded Crisis Preparedness and Response Toolkit, which empowers client countries to deploy resources from their existing Bank portfolio more effectively to deliver a swift response when crises occur. It allows countries in the event of an emergency to immediately access up to 10 percent of undisbursed and uncommitted balances in their portfolio with the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD) or International Development Association (IDA) for response actions. The flexible resource reallocation will provide the Philippine government with immediate liquidity to rapidly deliver critical services—such as healthcare, shelter, and food—in times of emergency.

BCDA bullish on Luzon economic corridor, other projects with US, Japan endorsement

STATE-RUN Bases Conversion and Development Authority expressed optimism on the growth of the Central Luzon Economic Corridor with the support of the United States and Japan.

Among the components of the newly-launched corridor are the Subic-Clark Railway Project (SCRP), the expansion of Clark International Airport and the development of the Clark National Food Hub.

The economic corridor is the first project under the Group of Seven’s (G7) Partnership for Global Infrastructure and Investment (PGII) in the IndoPacific region.

BCDA president and chief executive Joshua Bingcang said the endorsement from the US and Japan would accelerate the project development.

“We are confident that the inclusion of SCRP, expansion of Clark International Airport and the Clark National Food Hub in the proposed Luzon Economic Corridor will help us accelerate the implementation of these game-changing infrastructure projects, not just for the country but for the whole Indo-Pacific region,” said Bingcang.

A joint vision statement released by the White House following a trilateral meeting in April said the three countries would “accelerate coordinated investments in high-impact infrastructure projects” within the Luzon Economic Corridor.

The corridor will connect major economic hubs in Luzon including Subic Bay, Clark, Manila and Batangas. Othel V. Campos

Aboitiz unit allots P24b to buy towers, build estates

ABOITIZ InfraCapital Inc., the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group, said Monday it allocated P24 billion this year for tower acquisition and development of economic estates.

“We have allocated around P24 billion for the expansion of our economic estates. We have ongoing expansion in West Cebu Estate as well as in Lima, that one will be finished this year. At the same time, some industrial expansion also in Lima will also be finished this year,” AIC president and chief executive Cosette Canilao said during the company’s virtual press briefing.

West Cebu Estate is a 540-hectare mixed-use development in Balamban, Cebu, while LIMA Estate is a 794-hectare Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA)-registered development with over 60,000 employees.

It is one of the largest privatelyowned industrial parks in the Philippines.

“For Unity Digital, we’re hoping to close the acquisition of the towers from Smart and Globe within the first half of this year. And then we’ve allocated some capex as well for the regional airports,” Canilao said.

“Unity Digital is really focused on completing the turnover of towers from Smart and Globe. AirAsia moves to cushion impact of higher fuel surcharge

AIRASIA Philippines said Monday it is implementing measures to cushion the effect of higher fuel surcharge to its passengers.

Fuel surcharge remained at level 6 for the past three months, which added P185 to P665 for domestic flights and P610.37 to P949.51 for international flights for tickets bought from May 1 to May 30.

AirAsia Philippines said, however, that tickets bought earlier in January and February would not be subjected to fuel surcharge adjustments.

AirAsia Philippines said it continues to enjoy a positive performance, evident in the number of seats sold in the first quarter which were 91 percent higher than its initial target. Load factor in the same period also increased 104 percent.

“With AirAsia, travelers can always rely on affordable fares. Our doubledigit promo offers such as the LFG 20 percent off All Seats, All Flights, available until April 28 will surely make your travel plans happen. However, we always advise our guests to plan their travels ahead to further save on costs,” AirAsia Philippines head of communications and public affairs

Steve Dailisan said.

AirAsia Philippines said it is also looking at implementing various measures to optimize airport operations and enhance customer journey. The airline is in discussion with the Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) to facilitate the transfer of its international flights to Terminal 1 from Terminal 3. “The shorter distance between Terminals 1 and 2, where AirAsia operates domestic flights, is seen to optimize the use of taxiways and minimize carbon emissions that will greatly benefit the entire airport operations. Guests are also expected to have an improved customer journey with shorter transfer time between two terminals. We see this as the ‘Best Move’ for all stakeholders,” Dailisan said. Darwin G. The PSE owns 20.98 percent of the issued and outstanding capital stock of PDS Holdings, the operator of the country’s fixed-income trading platform. The PSE seeks to acquire up to 100 percent of PDS to unify the capital markets.

“We have not started the negotiations now because the power of attorney that the banks gave to BAP has expired. So the BAP now is renewing that with the banks. Until that happens, I don’t want to talk to 24 different sectors,” Monzon said.

Monzon said that while the PSE obtained regulatory approval for the planned buyout, the negotiations with PDS shareholders has yet to start. He said the Bankers Association of the Philippines (BAP), one

Megawide’s core net income hits P269m as revenues rise 26%

MEGAWIDE Construction Corp. said Monday it posted a net income attributable to parent equity holder of P283.5 million in 2023, down 92 percent from P3.577 billion in 2022 when it booked off-gains.

Megawide said its core net income reached P269 million in 2023, a reversal from the P2-billion net loss the previous year, minus the one-time gain it booked in 2022 from the sale of the Mactan-Cebu International Airport.

Megawide said in a stock exchange filing its consolidated revenues climbed 26 percent year-on-year to P18.6 billion from P14.8 billion in 2022.

The performance was driven by the construction business, which delivered P18.1 billion in revenue, accounting for 97 percent of the total.

This was complemented by improved landport operations and initial contribution from the real estate segment, which recorded P348 million and P149 million, respectively.

“Our EPC [engineering, procurement and construction] business sustained a robust performance as progress on existing projects went as planned,” Megawide chairman and chief executive Edgar Saavedra said.

“Based on our timelines, 2024 will continue to reflect increased completion and should translate to higher revenues based on the S-curve. In addition, our pre-cast and construction [PCS] unit continued to build its external portfolio, helping boost performance from the construction segment,” said Saavedra.

The group’s construction unit signed new projects in 2023, bringing total order book to P43.1 billion.

The landport business also showed an improvement as foot traffic continued to increase, reaching a high of 200,000 during the peak of holidays in December 2023 and averaged 117,000 daily by the end of the year. Jenniffer B. Austria

THE Department of Energy granted Repower Energy Development Corp. (REDC) a hydropower service contract to develop and build a 320-megawatt seawater pump storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon. REDC said in a statement Monday it would soon build the project fol-

lowing the signing of a memorandum of agreement (MOA) with Austriabased Gugler Water Turbines GMBH (Gugler). The first project under the MOA will be in an elevation of around 300 meters above sea level, and the lower reservoir will utilize the coastline for unlimited seawater intake. REDC will be responsible for the funding of the pre-feasibility and initial activities.

“The development of a seawater pumped storage hydropower facility in Real, Quezon shall be the first of its kind in the Philippines, thus allowing the company to be a pioneering force in this particular area of clean energy,” REDC president and chief executive Eric Peter Roxas said. NTC, APEC finalize merger to reshape education sector

THE National Teachers College (NTC) and APEC Schools finalized their merger to form a stronger education powerhouse to reshape the sector. The merger, approved by the Securities and Exchange Commission in late 2023, combines the strengths and resources of both institutions to provide quality and accessible education to more students.

NTC, with a 95-year track record of excellence in teacher education, will bring experience, while APEC, known for its innovative and progressive teaching methods, will bring fresh ideas and modern approaches to education.

The merger paved the way for NTC SmartClass, blending traditional wisdom with modern technology.

“During the first year, we observed that NTC SmartClass homeschoolers appreciate the additional layers of support that other homeschooling programs do not provide,” said APEC Schools chief learning officer Mark Sy.

“The triangle of support ensures that we support each homeschooler along the way and that no one gets left behind, which fosters a love for learning,” he said. Many families opted for homeschooling as a safer alternative to traditional schooling during the pandemic due to concerns about health, flexibility and personalized learning.

GSIS pensioners urged to use online service amid scorching temperature

THE Government Service Insurance System (GSIS) advised pensioners to use online services amid PAGASA’s warning of unprecedented temperatures reaching up to 46 degrees Celsius in 24 areas across the country. GSIS encouraged old-age and survivorship pensioners to complete their renewal of active status or the Annual Pensioners Information Revalidation (APIR) through its digital platforms. “Our pensioners are among the most vulnerable during these extreme weather conditions. By enhancing access to our online services, we ensure they can fulfill their requirements without compromising their health,” GSIS president and general manager Jose Arnulfo Veloso said. Pensioners have the option to use the GSIS Touch Mobile App, which features advanced facial recognition technology for secure status verification. This user-friendly app allows pensioners to comply with revalidation requirements without leaving the safety of their homes. They can download the GSIS Touch Mobile App from major app stores and follow simple steps to complete their status renewal. The app also offers other services that enhance the user experience, providing a one-stop solution for many of their needs.

GSIS pensioners seeking a more personalized service can also opt for an online interview, which can be scheduled through designated GSIS email addresses.

AEV eyes more acquisitions to boost non-power business

ABOITIZ Equity Ventures Inc. (AEV) said it will pursue acquisitions in line with its strategy to diversify its portfolio and increase the contribution of nonpower businesses.

AEV senior vice president and chief financial officer Jose Emmanuel Hilado said in a virtual press briefing Monday the group aimed to source at least 50 percent of EBITDA or earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation and amortization from non-power businesses.

EBITDA is an alternate measure of profitability to net income and primarily represents the cash profit generated from operations.

“The consumer market is where we see more opportunities simply because we have a young population and strong consumer consumption and this will continue to anchor our economic growth in the Philippines,” Hilado said.

The group also allotted P153 billion for 2024 capital expenditures, nearly double the P65 billion it spent in 2023.

Hilado said bulk of this year’s spending or P73 billion would be set aside for its power business, while P40 billion would be spent by the parent firm for the acquisition of 40-percent stake in Coca-Cola Beverages Philippines Inc. (CCBPI). Aboitiz InfraCapital will also spend P26 billion this

DURING our class discussion on corporate social responsibility, our professor emphasized that companies have obligations and accountability to society, especially the communities where they operate. It’s how the company makes profits, not how it spends them.

Companies are not only economic but moral actors, too. According to Davis and Blomstrom, the company needs employees with integrity at all levels and appropriate organizational structure to take actions that protect and improve the welfare of society along with their own interests.

The summary of notes below is copied from the company’s social arm page.

Pilipinas Shell Foundation, Inc. (PSFI) was established on August 19, 1982, as the social arm of Shell companies in the Philippines. We aspire to spearhead fit-for-purpose projects that respond not only to the needs of Shell’s worksites and host communities but to the rest of the country.

PSFI work focuses on six thematic areas comprising various programs that are best fit for the communities we work

with, aligned with the UN SDGs, and developed and implemented by experts.

The company aims to be a good neighbor wherever we work by contributing to the well-being of neighboring communities. We work closely with them to manage the social impacts of our business activities, address any concerns about our operations, and enhance the benefits that we can bring.

The company works closely with communities to understand their concerns and identify how to address them. We aim to avoid or reduce any adverse impacts and manage those that may be unavoidable.

By engaging openly with communities, we can identify how and where we can bring sustainable benefits. We do this in many ways: by creating new jobs, encouraging local businesses to be a part of our supply chain, and providing useful skills training for people.

To ensure the positive and sustainable impact of PSFI’s programs, we remain committed to: (1) the in-depth assessment of communities’ needs, (2) the strategic development of programs alongside the identification of the most suitable key partners to collaborate with, (3) acquiring resources to support the sustainability of the programs,

I am proud to say that for the past eight years of my career life, I have been involved in some CSR programs such as BIYAHERO (Be A Hero), SINAG (Save, Invest, Nurture Access to Green Energy), and SKIL (Sanayan sa Kakayahang Industriyal).

For BIYAHERO, in partnership with the Automotive Association of the Philippines, we conducted pedestrian awareness campaigns regarding proper road conduct and behavior for the community and school children. In collaboration with the Bureau of Fire, we discussed the basic concepts of fire and practical and safe measures that the community can take to suppress the fire, including who they should contact for support.

For SINAG, in partnership with a local supplier of Solar Panels, we can provide usage and basic troubleshooting training to a target community in Mindoro to equip them with the awareness they need. A solar panel donation follows this after they finish the course. For SKIL and a partner technical school, we provided welding training, a prevailing skill needed for work in the nearby area,

Additionally, we hold yearly coastal cleanups with industry and government partners such as the Philippine Coast Guard and the Philippine Ports Authority, as well as books and educational materials donations to partner schools and many more programs. There are strategic programs that we plan and revisit every year as necessary to ensure their sustainability in achieving the objectives.

Based on what I researched, know and experienced about the company’s social responsibilities, I can say that we are in CSR 2.0 on the CSR continuum. I am proud and grateful that I work for a company that values the communities where we operate and partners with government and other industries to contribute to nation-building.

Ayala Group vows to fight climate change

THE Ayala Group welcomed last week the challenge to help build a resilient and secure Philippines, vowing to speed up the transition to low carbon emissions and boost the climate readiness of vulnerable communities.

The Climate Change Commission (CCC) and the Ayala Group formally forged a partnership with the signing of a memorandum of understanding on April 12 to attain the country’s climate adaptation and mitigation plans,

The partnership paves the way for the CCC and Ayala, along with Ayala Land Inc., Bank of Philippine Islands, Globe Telecom Inc., ACEN Corp.; and Ayala Foundation, to explore possible avenues of collaboration in promoting and achieving the country’s goals under the Philippine climate agenda.

The MOU also includes establishing prospect programs that allow investment-led, accelerated, just, and equitable transitions towards lowcarbon emissions and the increase of vulnerable communities’ climate resilience and adaptive capacity.

“To have the private sector’s commitment to our climate goals is important. Climate change is a complex issue that requires a wholeof-a-government and a whole-of-thesociety approach, and this includes the private sector,” said CCC vice chairperson and executive director Robert E.A. Borje in a press statement. He added the partnership with Ayala

marked the start of an era of climate resiliency where businesses and corporations thrive in a sustainable and green business landscape.

To support the government, Ayala continues to ramp up its renewable energy investments, with ACEN expanding its presence globally and increasing its renewable capacity.

The group also scales up its climate action along the lines of energy efficiency, carbon emissions reduction, and sustainability-related financing products.

“Climate change can cause great anxiety or fear, but for us at Ayala, we see these tremendous challenges as a unique opportunity to work together with like-minded partners to help build a resilient and secure future,” said Jaime Urquijo, Chief Sustainability and Risk Officer of Ayala Corp..

“We hope that this MOU signing will bring forth collaborative projects that will enhance our capacity to adapt to climate change; expand our understanding of the risks and opportunities that climate change has brought and be a platform to show the best Filipino ingenuity and resilience in the face of a tremendous global challenge,” he added.

Food, beverage rms commit to plastic cutback

FOOD and beverage (F&B) companies are poised to minimize plastic as a favored packaging material.

A recent Tetra Pak research has found out that three out of the top five commitments made by business leaders to address sustainability challenges include the reduction of plastic usage.

The research examined F&B manufacturers’ attitude to sustainability, now and in five years’ time.

Half of the surveyed businesses identified consumer demand as the main catalyst behind implementing new sustainable solutions within the manufacturing and processing arena. This echoes the sentiment found in a separate Tetra Pak consumer study on packaging. It found the intention to buy among almost three out of four respondents (74 percent) would increase if a brand talked about environmental topics, while 42 percent believe that an “environmentally sound package” justifies a higher price, providing the industry with a reassuring case for adopting a business model that reduces environmental impact.

were able to give a sturdy attribute to the fog catcher that can withstand heavy wind, hurricanes and other effects of climate change,” said Miguel Mercado, project lead and program management trainer, in an interview.

The fog catcher is made of a steel scaffolding-like brace with a height of 6.25 meters (about 20 feet) and erected on 38 square meters of land.

It is wrapped with a nylon mesh that will allow the mist to be caught, dripping to the bottom where the collection is made.

The catcher is located in Haights Farm, a pioneer in modern highland farming techniques and where the famous Sakura Park is.

Atok registers zero to 24 degrees Celsius, depending on the time of the year.

Benguet, Ifugao and Mountain Province produce 85 percent of temperate vegetables, like potatoes, carrots and cabbages.

“The initial implementation is at Haights Farm but we intend to expand to neighboring areas and even the lowland Atok, but we will use a different technology,” Mercado said.

“Water scarcity and rationed water supply are the top reasons why we can’t sustain proper irrigation for our crops, combat harvest wastage from night frosts, and even simply support local tourism,” he said. PNA

Japanese town discards incinerator, leads the way to a low waste society

Through robust policymaking, governments can encourage consumers to keep their products for longer while pushing manufacturers to offer repair services, a change that would bring a host of economic benefits. They can also implement extended producer responsibility, a policy that can ensure producers of material goods are responsible for the management and treatment of waste. This can keep raw materials and goods in the economic cycle and inspire consumer waste prevention, eco-design and optimization of waste collection.

“As the world drowns in waste, humanity must act,” says Sheila AggarwalKhan, director of UNEP’s Industry and Economy Division. “We have the solutions to solve the waste pollution crisis. We just need commitment, collaboration and investment from governments, businesses and individuals to implement them.”

4. REDUCED RESOURCE. Raw material use has more than tripled over the last 50 years, driving the destruction of natural spaces and fueling the triple planetary crisis of climate change, nature and biodiversity loss and pollution and waste. Producers can follow nationally determined eco-design standards to reduce energy and resource use while minimizing hazardous chemicals in production. These standards also ensure products are durable, repairable and recyclable while use. This should be part of a larger effort to design products through what is known as the lifecycle approach. This entails reducing resource use and emissions to the environment throughout all stages of a product’s life, from production to recycling. UNEP News (To be continued)

About 77 percent of businesses expressed a willingness to accept cost-related trade-offs associated with the implementation of sustainable manufacturing and processing solutions, despite the industry facing ongoing macroeconomic challenges. The insight follows COP28, which saw many private sector stakeholders committing to sustainability targets and initiatives, including Tetra Pak’s actionoriented approach towards food systems transformation.

WHEN the landfill in Osaki, in the southwest of Japan, reached capacity, an incinerator was the logical next step. Instead, the town decided to get serious about recycling.

Ahead of International Zero Waste day last March 30, Kasumi Fujita, a town councillor committed to Osaki’s low waste policies, tells UN News what inspired her.

Ms. Fujita moved to Osaki in 2021 to work with the municipality, business sector and local community to help prepare the town for a more sustainable future. Today, Osaki, with a population of around 12,000, recycles a remarkable 80 percent of its waste, and was able to avoid building an incineration plant.

“I have always wanted to work for something related to the climate crisis, and strongly felt that I needed to act. That is why I came to Osaki. Here, waste is sorted into 27 different categories. Since there is no incineration plant, only blue bags go directly

landfill without getting incinerated, while the other 26 categories are sorted and recycled properly,” said Ms. Fujita. For example,

Less than 1 percent of the material used to produce clothing is recycled into new items, resulting in over US$100 billion in annual material value loss. The textiles industry also uses the equivalent of 86 million Olympic-sized swimming pools of water every year. To counter that, the fashion industry needs to become more circular. Brands and retailers can offer more circular business models and products that last longer and can be remade, governments can provide infrastructure for collecting and sorting used textiles, communicators―including influencers and brand managers―can shift fashion’s marketing narrative, and consumers can assess if their clothing purchases are necessary. “Zero waste makes sense on every level,” says Michal Mlynár, UN-Habitat acting executive director. “By retaining materials within the economy and enhancing waste management practices, we bring benefits to our economies, our societies, our planet and ourselves.”

Food waste is collected three times a week with a blue bucket. It is crushed into smaller pieces. Pruned plants will also be brought in here, and they are mixed together with the food waste. The pruned plants contain many native micro-organisms. As they decompose, the waste turns into a rich compost, almost all which is used as on Osaki’s farms. “I think the process is very simple and can be practiced anywhere in the world. EARTH DAY SPECIAL ISSUE

Earth Day 2024 highlights global bid to combat plastic pollution

EVERY year on April 22,

Earth Day reminds us of our roles as stewards responsible for protecting the planet we call home. This year, the theme rings particularly clear: “Planet vs. Plastics.” Plastic pollution has become a critical environmental issue, demanding immediate and collective action.

It began in 1970 and paved the way for the modern environmental movement. During its first leg, about 20 million people from across the United States of America attended inaugural events across numerous sites, including schools, universities, and other communities.

How it all began The deteriorating environment quality alarmed former US Senator and Wisconsin Governor Gaylord Nelson. He was among those who witnessed the effects of the Santa Barbara, California, oil spill in 1969. The student anti-war movement inspired him to combine its energy with an emerging public consciousness about pollution.

Nelson presented the teach-in on college campuses idea to the national media, later convincing Republican Congressman Pete McCloskey to co-chair the initiative. He also recruited Denis Hayes, a young activist, to organize the campus teach-ins and to scale the idea to a broader public. They chose April 22 to maximize student participation.

Hayes also took the event to new heights by assembling an 85-person national staff to promote events nationwide after realizing its potential to inspire all Americans. Eventually, the effort expanded to include a variety of organizations, faith groups, and other associations.

They renamed it Earth Day, which gained nationwide traction immediately and garnered national media attention.

Twenty million Americans, or 10 percent of the country’s total population at the time, were inspired by Earth Day to protest against the effects of 150 years of industrial development, which had left a growing legacy of grave consequences for human health, by taking to the streets, parks, and theaters.

As 1990 drew near, environmental leaders approached Hayes to spearhead yet another significant campaign for the environment. It’s when Earth Day went global, inspiring 200 million people across 141 nations and bringing environmental concerns to the fore.

Earth Day in 1990 accelerated recycling efforts across the globe and paved the way for the Rio de Janeiro United Nations Earth Summit in 1992.

Earth Day continues to build upon the work and legacy of its founders. The organization continues to create a historic movement as citizens of the world by partnering with thousands of partners globally for a united call for creativity, innovation, ambition, and bravery to meet our climate crisis and seize the enormous opportunities of a zero-carbon future.

Focusing on ‘Planet vs. Plastic’ The widespread presence of plastic is staggering. Plastic has infiltrated our community’s various sectors, from singleuse bags and straws to microplastics lurking in our oceans and food chain.Although designed for convenience, the synthetic material often takes centuries to decompose, leaving a legacy of environmental damage. Our oceans bear the

brunt of this issue. Marine animals become entangled in plastic debris or mistake it for food, leading to injuries, starvation, and even death. Plastic waste disrupts entire ecosystems, threatening biodiversity and the health of our oceans. Beyond the immediate threat to wildlife, plastic pollution poses a significant risk to human health. Microplastics, tiny fragments of plastic less than 5 millimeters in size, have been found in our food and water, raising concerns about their potential impact on our bodies.

The chemicals used in plastic manufacturing can also get into our food and drinks, with unknown long-term health consequences. The battle against plastic pollution requires a multi-pronged approach. Individual action is crucial. Making conscious choices in our daily lives can significantly reduce our plastic footprint. Opting for reusable shopping bags, water bottles, and coffee mugs are simple yet impactful steps. Supporting businesses prioritizing sustainable packaging and

reducing our reliance on single-use plastics are equally important. However, individual action alone cannot solve this systemic problem. We need strong policies and regulations to promote a circular economy for plastics by prioritizing reusable and recyclable materials, investing in innovative recycling technologies, and holding manufacturers accountable for the lifecycle of their products.

A global treaty on plastic pollution is urgently needed. This international agreement would establish binding targets for plastic reduction, promote innovation in sustainable materials, and encourage responsible waste management practices. By working together, countries can create a framework for a future where plastic pollution is a relic of the past.

The fight against plastic pollution is not just about environmental protection; it’s about safeguarding overall well-being between ourselves and the planet. By joining this critical battle, we demonstrate our commitment to a

healthier, sustainable future for generations. United in a single cause, one step at a time Environmentally conscious and everyday Filipinos can join the collaborative effort during Earth Day, even in small ways.

One example is the well-known mantra “reduce, reuse, and recycle.” Filipinos are naturally resourceful, and Earth Day is a perfect time to embrace this spirit. Reduce single-use plastic use by choosing reusable shopping bags, water bottles, and food containers. When buying groceries, choose products with minimal packaging and avoid excessive plastic wrapping.

Many Filipino organizations work tirelessly to protect our environment. Another way to contribute to Earth Day is by volunteering your time or donating resources to these groups.

Their expertise and dedication are crucial in tackling environmental challenges.

They can also talk to their family, friends, and community about the importance of environmental protection. Share information

about Earth Day events and initiatives. Encourage others to adopt eco-friendly practices in their daily lives. Exercising sustainable options in consumer behavior can also be an ideal approach. When possible, prioritize buying local produce from farmers’ markets or sustainable businesses that use eco-friendly practices and minimal packaging to support local communities, reduce the carbon footprint associated with transportation, and promote responsible product lifecycles. Finally, Filipinos can utilize social media platforms to spread awareness about Earth Day and environmental issues. Share informative content, participate in online discussions, and encourage others to join the movement. Remember, even a simple Earth Day post can inspire others to take action.

Remember, every action, big or small, contributes to a more sustainable future for the Philippines. Let’s join hands and show the world that Filipinos are a force for positive change this Earth Day.

Manila Standard leads Earth Day 2024 celebrations in Macabebe, Pampanga

MANILA Standard hosted a significant mangrove planting event in Macabebe, Pampanga, on April 20, 2024, aligning with its longstanding commitment to corporate social responsibility.

This activity was held in conjunction with global Earth Day celebrations, which this year embraced the theme “Planet vs. Plastics,” underscoring the urgent need to address environmental challenges. The event is a continuation of the company’s IntegriTree program under its Adopt-a-Tree campaign.

Held in Brgy. Consuelo, about a 2-hour drive from Manila, the event had Manila Standard employees and local volunteers planting numerous mangrove propagules, reinforcing coastal ecosystems and mitigating erosion. This underscored the role of natural barriers in protecting the environment and communities like Brgy. Consuelo.

Reflecting on the initiative, Edgar Valmorida, Circulation Manager of Manila Standard, connected this year’s efforts to the broader environmental mission of the organization.

“Building on last year’s ‘Green Wave’ initiative for World Environment Day, we continue our advocacy by enhancing our coastal regions, which is crucial not just for biodiversity, but for the livelihoods dependent on these ecosystems,” Valmorida said.

Anita Grefal, OIC-Operations at Manila Standard, emphasized the educational aspect of the event. She highlighted the ongoing “Integritree” campaign within their “Adopt-a-Tree” initiative, demonstrating the newspaper’s dedication to environmental education and action.

“Today’s planting is about instilling a sense of responsibility and fostering a connection with our environment, aligning with global themes like Earth Day’s focus on reducing plastic pollution,” Grefal explained.

“We are immensely thankful for the enduring partnerships that make these initiatives possible. Together, we are setting a precedent for community-driven environmental action that hopefully inspires others to join us in these crucial efforts,” she added.

Last year, Manila Standard conducted its 12th annual tree planting event, “The Green Wave,” at La Mesa Dam in Quezon City to commemorate World Environment Day. The event, supported by various corporate partners and involving the planting of 300 seedlings, reinforced Manila Standard’s long-standing commitment to environmental stewardship and sustainability through its CSR initiatives.

“For Earth Day 2024, we coordinated closely with the office of Director Karmela Beatriz L. Galura from the Strategic Communication and Initiative Services (SCIS) at the Department of Natural Resources Central Office,” Valmorida said.

“Director Galura facilitated our collaboration with PENRO Pampanga, particularly with Mr. Robbie Gutierrez, Extension Officer of the National Greening Program (NGP) as well as Mr. Peter John De Jesus, and Mr. Gary Aringgoy from NGP. We are also grateful for the support from the office of the DENR Secretary, Hon. Maria Antonio Yulo-Loyzaga, who played a crucial role in advancing our request.”

On the other hand, Guiterrez expressed gratitude for the support: “We are thankful for the significant effort and look forward to more partnerships with Manila Standard. It’s crucial that more like-minded companies join us in our efforts to nurture Mother Nature,” he said in Filipino.

Led by the Manila Standard and supported by Aboitiz Power, Nickel Asia Corporation, Tingog Party List, and the local government and Barangay Council, the event was an impactful stand against environmental degradation, marking a significant stride towards tangible environmental conservation.

The event concluded with participants sharing a hearty lunch, reinforcing a powerful message as they departed that every small action contributes to a larger effort in environmental conservation and responsibility.

In the battle against plastic pollution, climate change, and broader environmental challenges, every mangrove stands crucial, empowering communities to drive impactful change.

Gary V ventures into fresh career reinvention

MR. PURE Energy Gary Valenciano recently signed a contract with ABSCBN’s talent agency arm, Star Magic, to become one of its official artists.

During the signing event, Gary was joined by his wife, Angeli Pangilinan Valenciano, children Paolo and Kiana, ABS-CBN’s COO for broadcast, Cory Vidanes, Star Magic head Laurenti Dyogi and manager Alan Real. ABS-CBN president and CEO Carlo Katigbak and chairman Mark Lopez warmly welcomed the OPM icon at the start of the event.

ASAP performers Angela Ken, Khimo Gumatay, JM Yosures, Sheena Belarmino, and Jed Madela paid tribute to Gary V with renditions of his timeless OPM classics at the event. Additionally, 40 Star Magic artists congratulated Gary V through a heartwarming video message for his latest Kapamilya feat.

Talking to the audience, the 59-year-old music legend recounted his showbiz journey through decades and thanked ABS-CBN for its continued trust. He then shared his excitement about becoming the latest addition to the Star Magic family – noting that becoming part of its roster of stars is a reinvention in his 40-year career and is looking forward to embracing an extended role in inspiring the youth.

“I am into being able to mentor and spend time with younger people, especially with students. I went to various schools, colleges, and universities where I shared my life, and I am going to continue doing that. I have seen the impact on the hearts of these people, and that’s another thing I wanted to do,” Gary said.

Aside from serving as a mentor figure, he candidly shared his willingness to make his onscreen acting comeback. “My doors are open for other artistic ventures. Like, I don’t mind going back into acting a bit more. If the right opportunity comes, I will certainly keep

myself open to that,” he added.

With a career spanning four decades, Gary has been a mainstay with ABS-CBN for 20 years – most notably as a multi-awarded host and performer for the country’s longest-running musical variety show, ASAP Natin ‘To, and serving as the voice to the theme songs of hit Kapamilya teleseryes

Alongside his electrifying acts on and off stage, Gary has also been hands-on in honing the next generation of Kapamilya artists – serving as a celebrity judge and mentor in various talent shows, such as X Factor Philippines, World of Dance Philippines, Your Face Sounds Familiar, and most recently with Idol Philippines, and It’s Showtimes’ “Tawag ng Tanghalan”

Coinciding with his latest feat as a Kapamilya, Gary is gearing up for his major solo concert, Pure Energy: One Last Time, happening on April 26 and 27, 8:00 p.m., with an additional show on May 10 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

For tickets, visit smtickets.com or e-mail tickets@garyv.com for other inquiries.

Focusing more on gut-wrenching violence and the highs and lows of war reporting than on politics (it posits California and Texas entering an unlikely alliance against the federal government), the movie “has succeeded in uniting both blue states and red states,” as the Hollywood Reporter put it. Its two-week domestic take of $44.9 million makes it one of A24’s top all-time grossers. Not far behind in second spot was Universal’s new film Abigail at $10.2 million.

Also crowding the top of the list was Warner Bros.’ Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, at $9.5 million. The enormous gorilla and reptilian giant team up this time to save their species -- and ours.

In fourth was Lionsgate’s new Guy Ritchie espionage thriller The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare, at $9 million. Ritchie has directed some giant films in the past, including Disney’s 2019 Aladdin liveaction remake, which took in over $1 billion worldwide.

Henry Cavill, Eiza Gonzalez, and Henry Golding star in a heavily fictionalized recounting of a daring operation conducted by British special forces during World War II. And in fifth was Sony’s new animated action comedy Spy x Family Code: White at $4.9 million. AFP

ACTRESS Lovi Poe is excited about the latest projects that she is about to shoot under Regal Entertainment. The first is Guilty Pleasure and the other one is called The Untamed The first one is to be directed by Connie

is an action-drama and requires physical preparation for the intense action scenes.

“Not only that, I also have another new project. It’s something new for me as well. I know that this will be another challenging assignment. So, you see, I’ll be very busy in the coming days doing these exciting materials,” she said.

She has already done three movies in Hollywood. What’s the difference between doing a film locally and abroad?

“Honestly, I exert almost the same effort regardless of filming locally or abroad. Philippine showbiz versus Hollywood isn’t a factor; it’s all about giving the project my love and effort,” Lovi explained.

“For me, work is work. I will give it the same love and effort. Everything’s equal to me. Of course, doing a project in Hollywood is a brand new venture for me. It’s a new phase in my career, a new experience. It’s just something that I am going to enjoy as much as I enjoy filming here in our country,” she carried on.

Meanwhile, the actress is grateful that her husband Monty Blencowe understands the demands of her job.

“He’s very supportive. He is scheduled to fly to the Philippines just to spend time with me. There are just times when I’m the one who goes to America. It’s like I’m based in between since there’s work for me here and I also have work there,” the 34-year-old actress shared.

Interestingly, does she still ask permission from her husband when it comes to accepting film projects?

“No, nothing like that. But we talk about it. He knows my work and trusts my decisions. There’s no need for approval. He respects my job.”

Can she say that she’s already adjusted to her role as a wife and an actress here and in the US?

“I have a supportive husband who pushes me to do what I love and who’s excited for me. It’s a lot of work. It’s hard to switch on and the next switch off. But then, that’s part of the job and I enjoy it so much. So, I’m not complaining. In fact, I wouldn’t have it any other way,” ends Lovi.

In a recent television interview, Cassy Legaspi supported Darren Espanto’s statement that they’re just the best of friends.

“It’s so hard to explain what we have but we’re just really best friends,” she avers.

Prior to this, Darren was interviewed on television as well where he said that he and Cassy are just best friends. He said: “People are so persistent. Cassy and I

Iloilo launches new campaign to push tourism growth

THE provincial and city governments of Iloilo, along with various tourism stakeholders from the private sector, are aiming to significantly attract more inbound local and foreign travelers to Iloilo City. They are positioning themselves as champions of community partnerships in tourism with the recent launch of their Visit Iloilo campaign.

Leading the groups supporting the city’s multi-sectoral tourism campaign is the Iloilo Festivals Foundation, Inc. (IFFI), together with the Department of Tourism of Region 6, the Tourism Promotions Board (TPB), Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry of Iloilo (PCCI-Iloilo), and the Iloilo MICE (Meetings, Incentives, Conventions, and Exhibitions) Alliance.

“Visit Iloilo is our attempt to further promote Iloilo into becoming one of

the premier tourist destinations here in our country. It is an invitation for everyone to immerse themselves in our Ilonggo history, heritage, and hospitality,” says Allan Tan, president, IFFI. Iloilo City, the country’s gateway to several exciting destinations in Western Visayas, is tapping into all partners from air, land, sea transportation, accommodations, recreation, shopping, destination, and other establishments for this Visit Iloilo alliance that ties up a wellrounded experience for local and international tourists.

From its name, Visit Iloilo gestures as the ultimate response for tourists to explore and experience the excitement and the fun that the city offers, showcasing all of these across different channels, platforms, and discussion points. Along with this is to create a

consistent digital awareness campaign redirecting searches across the web to a conversion site where suppliers are all present and waiting.

The campaign aims to facilitate multi-sectoral synergy and collaboration, increase awareness about the variety of experiences that tourists can explore, and create new tour packages all aimed at increasing economic gains and tourism opportunities for all.

“More than just a tourism campaign, Visit Iloilo is a legacy that enriches our lives and leaves an indelible mark for generations to come. Together, we are very happy to welcome everyone to Visit Iloilo, Experience Iloilo, and of course Love Iloilo!” Tan adds.
