In a message, President Marcos emphasized the significance of the occasion, expressing gratitude for the spiritual renewal experienced after a month of prayer, sacrifice, and penance during Ramadan.

President Marcos also offered prayers for the continuous provision of wisdom and fortitude from Allah as efforts persist in promoting harmony, prosperity, and compassion within homes and communities.

President Marcos said he would prioritize enhancing economic ties among the Philippines, Japan, and the US to foster resilience and security.

"I intend to explore ways of advancing cooperation, especially in the areas of critical infrastructure, semiconductors, digitalization and cybersecurity, critical minerals, renewable energy, as well as defense and maritime cooperation,” Mr. Marcos said.

In addition to the trilateral discussions, President Marcos is slated to hold a bilateral meeting with President Biden, where discussions will center on further strengthening the alliance between the Philippines and the United States.

Mr. Marcos will also engage with business leaders in the United States, extending invitations for investment in the Philippines.

The top White House advisor for the Indo-Pacific Strategy said the trilateral partnership is a perfect representation of three maritime democracies who are aligned with a shared vision.

Dr. Mira Rapp-Hooper, Special Assistant and Senior Director for East Asia and Oceania, clarified that the summit is not about China but about the three countries’ commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific region.

What I will say is what we’ve said throughout the Biden administration, which is that the US-Indo-Pacific Strategy and our groupings of alliances and partnerships are not about being against anyone or anything,” RappHooper said.

“They’re about what we’re for and that’s very clear in our Indo-Pacific Strategy. We make clear that we stand together for a free and open Indo-Pacific that is prosperous, resilient, and secure, and we welcome into that approach all comers who share in that vision,” she added.

On Sunday, the three countries, along with Australia, conducted a quad naval exercise in the West Philippine Sea, part of the vast South China Sea that China claims entirely.

Speaker Martin Romualdez welcomed the forthcoming historic trilateral summit, saying this augurs for immense economic benefits.

He said the first-ever meeting of the three leaders in Washington D.C. on April 11 signifies a pivotal step toward deepening economic ties among the three nations, enhancing peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region, and bolstering cooperation in various areas of mutual interest.

“Economic cooperation lies at the heart of this trilateral meeting, with discussions aimed at enhancing trade, investment, and development opportunities among our nations. Our country’s deeper economic integration with the United States and Japan will undoubtedly benefit our people in terms

Vlogger bashed over video with caught tarsiers

A VIDEO of a vlogger encountering two tarsiers and attempting to capture them has been circulating on social media.

In a now-deleted video originally posted on his Facebook page, the vlogger known as "Farm Boy," hailing from Polomolok in South Cotabato, can be seen removing one of the tarsiers from the bamboo it was clinging to. He pointed a camera at it and asked it to smile along with the other tarsier.

Many people expressed outrage over the video. Tarsiers are well-known to be highly sensitive and easily stressed creatures, contributing to their endangered status.

"The tarsier, an ENDANGERED SPECIES, is protected by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the law. It is illegal to handle them, especially to play with them, as they can eas-

ily become stressed and die," stated animal rescue service Pet Avenue in a social media post.

"Let's make noise to get the authorities involved regarding this violation by these ignorant vloggers for content. Ignorance of the law excuses no one," it continued, urging the public to reshare the video to raise awareness.

Listed as endangered by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Conservation Monitoring Center, tarsiers are protected under the Republic Act No. 9147, or the Wildlife Resources Conservation and Protection Act. This law makes it illegal to kill, destroy, trade, collect, hunt, possess, mistreat, or inflict other injuries on wildlife.

The DENR actively works to rescue tarsiers and other wildlife found by citizens. They encourage people to report any sightings to their hotline. Abigail Adriatico

Fil-Am WH chef whips up menu for Japan leader

FILIPINO American Cristeta Comerford, the White House Executive Chef, is whipping up another tasty menu for visiting Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida and his wife Yuko, US First Lady Dr. Jill Biden told the media on Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila). Biden gave news bodies a peek of the State Dinner slated for Wednesday night (April 9) for the Japanese leader, who will meet US President Joe Biden and President Marcos in an historic trilateral meeting on April 11. The menu will include an appetizer of house-cured salmon and a dry-aged ribeye, she said.

"A dry-aged ribeye beef and it is sauced with sesame sauvignon. And also since it is spring we have some wonderful morel mushrooms, some wonderful greens and some fava beans and some wonderful sea shell leaves as well," Comerford said in a statement.

The dessert will be a caramel pistachio cake, with a hint of cherry blossoms, a nod to the gift of cherry blossom trees from the Japanese government in 1912, she added.

The First Lady described the dinner as transforming the White House "into a vibrant Spring Garden, a place of joy and renewal, of hope and growth."

Back on Broadway: Lea Salonga in Sondheim tribute

LEA Salonga is returning to Broadway next year for the US debut of "Stephen Sondheim's Old Friends," as she and fellow Tony winner Bernadette Peters will reprise their performances in the theater hit after a successful 16-week run in London's West End in January.

"Old Friends" pays tribute to composer and lyricist Sondheim, an icon of 20th century musical theater. It was devised by Cameron Mackintosh who also produced "Les Miserables," "Phantom of the Opera," "Cats," "Hamilton," and "Miss Saigon"—which Salonga starred in as Kim decades ago.

"Old Friends" will begin previews on March 25, 2025 at the Manhattan Theater Club and will also get a pre-Broadway run at the Ahmanson Theater via the Center Theater Group in Los Angeles.

He said the meeting also underscores the crucial role of the Philippines as a partner of superpowers US and Japan in their shared commitment to fostering regional stability and prosperity.

“As nations with strategic interests in the Indo-Pacific, our collaboration is essential in addressing common challenges and advancing mutual interests,” the Speaker said.

Other leaders of the House of Representatives also expressed optimism on the economic benefits the Philippines stand to reap from the trilateral summit.

“We expect the three leaders to agree on expanded economic cooperation among their nations. The economic advantages this summit could produce for us Filipinos are potentially enormous,” Senior Deputy Speaker and Pampanga Rep. Aurelio Gonzales Jr. said.

Majority Leader Manuel Jose Dalipe said trade cooperation would most likely be enhanced because of the three leaders’ discussions. “We have to remember that the US and Japan are among our country’s biggest trading partners,” he said.

For his part, Deputy Speaker and Quezon Rep. David Suarez said the Philippines also expects increased military and financial help from the US and Japan.

“These two allies of ours are our largest and most generous sources of official development assistance,” he said.

“It is also my sincere hope that, despite our diversity in beliefs and philosophies, we will remain united by our shared aspiration for a more progressive and resilient nation moving forward,” President Marcos expressed.

He called for the forging of a society where love triumphs over indifference, faith over doubt and fear, and unity over division and discord. President Marcos also issued Proclamation No. 514, declaring April 10 as a regular holiday to emphasize the religious and cultural importance of Eid’l Fitr and promote unity and understanding among all Filipinos.

House Speaker Ferdinand Martin G. Romualdez on Wednesday acknowledged the contributions of the Filipino Muslim community in nationbuilding on the occasion of Eid’l Fitr.

Gonzales, Dalipe and Suarez pointed out that aside from economic gains, the Philippines and the Indo-Pacific region in general could expect peace dividends from the trilateral summit.

“Presidents Biden and Marcos and Prime Minister Kishida will surely discuss peace and stability in the region, particularly in the West Philippine Sea,” they said, noting that the South China Sea is a vital world trade route.

“The international community should ensure freedom of navigation and overflight there. Peace in this area will contribute to the economic development of the region,” they said.

Deputy Majority Leader and PBA Party-list Rep. Margarita Nograles expressed confidence the trilateral meeting would serve as a catalyst for fostering enhanced cooperation and prosperity, ultimately benefiting the citizens of the participating nations.

Assistant Majority Leader and Lanao del Sur 1st District Rep. Zia Alonto Adiong highlighted the importance of dialogue and collaboration in addressing regional challenges.

Assistant Majority Leader and La Union Rep. Francisco Paolo Ortega emphasized the potential of the trilateral summit to strengthen economic partnerships and enhance regional security.

Assistant Majority Leader and Zambales Rep. Jefferson Khonghun shared his optimism for the results of the summit. “This summit represents a crucial step towards deepening our ties and fostering greater understanding and cooperation among our citizens,” he added.

“The Philippine National Police (PNP) joins our Muslim brothers and sisters as they celebrate Eid’l Fitr, the Festival of Breaking the Fast, marking the end of Ramadan,” Marbil said in a statement released on Wednesday, April 10.

“This period of fasting, prayer, and reflection holds great significance for the Muslim community in the Philippines and worldwide,” he added.

He said national police force is also committed to “ensure the safety and security of all Filipinos, deploying significant personnel to areas with Muslim populations to safeguard a smooth conduct of festivities.”

sovereign rights of the Filipinos," Mr. Marcos said in an ambush interview in San Juan.

He said the administration has no idea of the alleged agreement between former President Rodrigo Duterte and Chinese President Xi Jinping on the West Philippine Sea.

"We don't know if it's a secret agreement. We don't know anything about it. There is no documentation, there is no record, there is no—we were not briefed when I came into office. No one even told us that there was such an agreement," Mr. Marcos said.

Earlier, Duterte's former chief legal counsel Salvador Panelo denied the existence of any “gentleman’s agreement.” Panelo squarely contradicted the statement of Duterte’s former spokesperson, Harry Roque, that a verbal deal was reached between the two leaders to maintain the status quo in Ayungin Shoal.

“There’s no such animal,” Panelo said. “This is what President Duterte said: ‘I did not enter into any gentleman’s agreement whatsoever.'”

However, in a Facebook post, Roque shot back at those who seemed to have forgotten the “gentleman’s agreement to maintain the status quo on the West Philippine Sea.”

“For those who have forgotten, now you know,” Roque wrote in his caption to a link to a Reuters story, “Philippines says China agrees on no new expansion in South China Sea.”

But Panelo said Duterte told him twice that no such deal existed. He said the former President even raised the arbitral ruling to Xi during his first visit to China in 2016.

This developed as the top US military officer in the Pacific on Tuesday said Washington was "very, very concerned" about Beijing's recent "dangerous" actions in the disputed South China Sea, after confrontations with Philippine vessels.

Speaking in Sydney, United States Indo-Pacific Command head Admiral John Aquilino referenced recent encounters between Chinese and Philippine boats around a remote shoal in the Spratly Islands.

"I'm very concerned about what's happening at the Second Thomas Shoal", said Aquilino. "I'm very, very concerned about the direction it's going."

Asked if he has a plan to talk with his predecessor, the Chief Executive said his administration has been discussing the matter with former officials. With AFP

Earlier, the Teachers’ Dignity Coalition said that the shift could be done more quickly by making the 2024-2025 academic year a transition period with slightly fewer class days.

Vice President Sara Duterte, concurrently education secretary, earlier said that the Department of Education cannot “rush” the return to the old school calendar.

The University of the Philippines Diliman (UPD) meanwhile recommended to its faculty members to shift to remote and or asynchronous classes during extreme heat conditions.

The state weather bureau on Monday warned of rising heat indexes reaching “danger levels” across the country amid the El Nino phenomenon as the Department of Education allowed the use of alternative delivery modes (ADMs) for teaching in areas that declared suspension of face-to-face classes, mostly in the Visayas region.

The revue was dubbed as a joyous and unforgettable big Broadway show with some of the greatest songs ever written for musical theater, just as Sondheim wanted.

Salonga last performed on Broadway when she portrayed Aurora Aquino in "Here Lies Love" in a special guest capacity — the show mostly involving Filipino actors and creatives was also her first time as a producer. She debuted on Broadway in 1991 with her iconic role of Kim in "Miss Saigon," having first performed on the West End, winning her a Tony Award at 20 years old. Prior to "Here Lies Love," Salonga's last Broadway appearances were for "Allegiance" from 2015 to 2016 and the 2017 revival of "Once on this Island."

“As we join in the celebrations of Eid’l Fitr, let us also recognize the diversity that enriches our nation. The Philippines is home to a vibrant Muslim community whose contributions have greatly enriched our great nation,” said Romualdez, the leader of the 309-strong House of Representatives.

“Let us embrace the spirit of inclusivity and understanding, fostering unity and respect for all faiths and beliefs,” he expressed.

The DepEd will also allow teachers to wear comfortable clothes instead of uniforms during in-person classes “subject to dress codes,” Assistant Secretary Francis Bringas told reporters in a Viber message.

“Yes that is the logical thing to do,” Bringas added, noting that publicschool students are already allowed to wear comfortable clothes since there is no prescribed uniform for them.

About 246 public schools in Western Visayas shifted to alternative delivery modes on Monday following the suspension of in-person classes over the extreme heat.

It was the same for students in Libon, Albay, who were told not to wear school uniforms after an advisory issued by the Office of the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council under Mayor Wilfredo V. Maronilla.

The adjustment in working hours of LGUs within the National Capital Region aims to reduce vehicular congestion, the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) said. Composed of 17 mayors in Metro Manila, the MMC stands as the governing board and policy-making body of the MMDA. All LGUs were directed to issue an ordinance to implement the adjusted working hours. However, government agencies in Metro Manila providing essential services may adopt the adjusted working schedule provided that they ensure continuous and uninterrupted public service delivery. The MMC resolution recommended that President Marcos issue an executive order for the implementation of the modified working hours in Metro Manila local governments. On the matter of road expansion and rehabilitation, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) on Wednesday bared several big-ticket projects being constructed by the government in a bid to ease traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

Mayor lauds Makati cops’ achievements

MAYOR Abigail Binay has commended the Makati Police Department for diligent efforts in combating illegal drugs, particularly for the recent seizure of P3.5 million worth of shabu during the first quarter of the year. Makati Police chief Col. Edward Cutiyog reported to the mayor that they have seized a total of 510 grams of shabu during drug bust operations that also led to the arrest of 35 suspected pushers and 132 drug dependents.

“The city government of Makati lauds the city police force for their hard work and dedication to duty. I exhort them to further intensify their efforts to eradicate the drug menace and strengthen collaboration with the city and other stakeholders towards establishing drug-free communities,” Binay said. She also cited their other notable accomplishments, such as the arrest of 83 wanted persons, apprehension of 23,941 violators of various city ordinances, and confiscation of 33 loose firearms.

“The sustained performance of the Makati Police does justice to the city’s substantial investments in strengthening their crimefighting and emergency response capabilities,” Mayor Binay said.

PBBM: No more extension of Apr. 30 PUVMP deadline

PRESIDENT Marcos on Wednesday said there would be no further extension of the April 30 deadline for the franchise consolidation under the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP).

During the Bagong Pilipinas townhall meeting in San Juan City, the President underscored the need to proceed with PUVMP without delay.

“The final thing you should expect is that there will be no more extension for the modernization. We really need that,” the Chief Executive said.

PNP, NBI launch manhunt against Pastor Quiboloy

THE Philippine National Police (PNP) and the National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) have descended on suspected hideouts of controversial televangelist Apollo Quiboloy, a self-proclaimed “son of God” and founder of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KOJC) based in Davao City.

PNP Region 11 chief Brig. Gen. Alden Delvo said his men, in coordination with various government agencies, tried to serve a warrant of arrest against Quiboloy who has gone into hiding to doge summons issued by the Senate which is conducting legislative inquiries into his alleged offenses including sexual abuse.

Delvo said NBI agents and crack operatives of the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group have joined local policemen in the manhunt for Quiboloy.

“They are here in Davao. They are with my men,” Delvo told reporters during a press briefing According to Delvo, the raiding team searched for Quiboloy in Davao City and Samal Island, but came back empty-handed. Delvo also said the KOJC compound and the Tamayong prayer mountain in Davao City as well as a resort in Samal Island were too large for the searchers to cover and gather intelligence information on Quiboloy’s whereabouts.

“We’re gonna fix (the process)... we’re just making sure that the payment and debt of the driver, operator won’t be too heavy, so we’re doing it properly and we’re making that system well-organized,” Marcos added.

The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) has called on jeepney drivers and operators to join the PUV consolidation before April 30, saying failure to meet the deadline will result in the revocation of their franchises.

He also ordered the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) to crack the whip on colorum vehicles. “I didn’t realize there were so many, about 30 percent of those operating are colorum. I’ll bring this issue to the Department of the Interior and Local Government Secretary now because

“Again, I have to reiterate, this is only until April 30. We need to consolidate because that is the first part of the modernization program,” LTFRB chairman Teofilo Guadiz III told reporters. Last January, the government administration extended anew the deadline for the PUV consolidation due to the strong clamor of transport groups.

“We really do not have information yet. I am relying on the intelligence community to ensure that they can provide relevant, timely, and accurate information to me so I can relay it to my bosses and make instructions to the lower units,” Delvo said.

President Marcos Jr. on Monday assured Quiboloy that the United States will not interfere in his cases in the near future.

OFWs injured in Taiwan quake now at 15

THE Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) on Wednesday reported the number of injured overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) during the 7.2 magnitude earthquake in Taiwan has increased to 15. All 15 OFWs have received initial medical treatment and have been discharged. Additionally, follow-up consultations and check-ups have been scheduled, the DMW said. The injured OFWs are currently recuperating in their respective company dormitories and accommodations. The Migrant Workers Office in

Taipei (MWO-Taipei) is monitoring their conditions closely in coordination with their companies as well as medical authorities.

Meanwhile, the DMW, through its Migrant Workers Offices in Taipei, Kaohsiung, and Taichung, works closely with the Manila Economic and Cultural Office (MECO) led by chairman Silvestre H. Bello III in monitoring the situation and helping the OFWs in the aftermath of the earthquake. A six-member augmentation team deployed to Taiwan has been meeting with various Filipino communities and workers’ groups to assure them of the government’s full support.

He said the LTO will also strengthen coordination with ports authorities in order to ensure that colorum vehicles would not be able to make inter-island trips, especially using the roll-on roll-off vessels.

“We will shut the doors in the various ports to prevent colorum motor vehicles from travelling from the Visayas to Metro Manila,” he warned.

“We will also hit them at the terminals and expressways. We will control key junctions throughout key cities to prevent them from plying,” he emphasized.

As a former member of a task group against colorums years ago, Mendoza has infused the good practices in recalibrating the strategies against colorum vehicles.

Brosas laments SC decision on GCTA for prisoners

ASSISTANT

Ar-

lene Brosas on Wednesday expressed disappointment with the recent Supreme Court (SC) ruling which affirmed the inclusion of prisoners convicted of rape and other heinous crimes to easily avail of the Good Conduct Time Allowance (GCTA).

According to Republic Act 7659, heinous crimes include treason, plunder, murder, rape, and others.

“Granting GCTA to individuals who committed rape and other heinous crimes may normalize brutal offenses. This diminishes the gravity of the crimes and sentences, causing even more anguish for the victims and their families,” Brosas, the nominee of Gabriela party-list group in Congress, said.

In 2021, Gabriela Women’s Party proposed the exemption of persons of authority from availing benefits from Good Conduct and Time Allowance (GCTA), citing the case of rape-slay convict Mayor Antonio Sanchez. “At this point, Congress should now amend Republic Act No. 10592 and include in its provisions that persons of authority must not be allowed to avail benefits from GCTA. Instead, political prisoners who have been charged and convicted for trumped-up or politically motivated cases should be prioritized,” Brosas said.

Brosas said “justice, the call of the victims of brutal crimes is not free.” “What should be focused on is the adoption of laws to hold the guilty accountable, especially those in power, at a time when crime and impunity are increasing in our country,” Brosas stressed.

DOH says no need to declare measles outbreak

THE Department of Health (DOH) said there is still no need to declare a nationwide outbreak of measles, amid reports of a rising number of cases of the highly contagious disease.

In a media forum on Wednesday, DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa said that while a majority of measles cases in the country was logged in the Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (BARMM), vaccination rates in other parts of the country were relatively high. “I cannot declare an outbreak because vaccination rates in other areas are high. Although they log cases, but the vaccination rate 85%. So you only have 15% of kids susceptible,” Herbosa, quoted by reports, said.

There were 2,500 cases of measles across the Philippines when the DOH visited BARMM, where 1,600 of the cases had been recorded, during Holy Week last month, the department said.

Herbosa said the DOH had to intervene in the region, which has its own Ministry of Health.

Earlier, the DOH said more than 1.3 million children in BARMM will benefit from a free immunization drive from April 1 to 12 amid the surge in measles cases.

In a joint statement on March 28, the major immunization campaign for children aged 6 months to 10 years old will be conducted by the DOH, UNICEF Philippines, World Health

is calling for immediate assistance for farmers, citing the ongoing disruption of the El Niño weather phenomenon on the country’s agriculture sector.

“It is important that we have funds to provide the necessary support to protect our farmers’ investments and to revive their crops,” he said, citing the need for a timely release of such funds.

The senator further said: “We have to be ready to aid our agriculture sector, especially the rice sector, to guarantee the availability and supply of agricultural products.”

He further said the government should expedite financial support for farmers adversely affected by the onslaught of the El Niño phenomenon.

Gatchalian said the state weather bureau earlier reported that El Niño will further intensify and could reach its peak this month.

Organization, and BARMM Ministry of Health (MOH). At least 77 percent of the confirmed cases of measles in the Philippines have been reported in the BARMM, particularly in the densely populated areas of Maguindanao del Norte, Lanao del Sur and Marawi City.

The UNICEF will help buy 1 million doses of measles vaccines for BARMM and another 1 million “for the rest of the country.”

“Children aged 6 to 59 months will receive one dose of vitamin A, while those with confirmed cases of measles will receive two. Vitamin A is a low- cost way to prevent complications from happening and boost immunity against other illnesses,” the joint statement read.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) said it will upgrade its transmission system for the 2025 polls with a new system will have a “sentto-all” feature, as the poll regulator retires its previous transparency server.

The transparency server—which was accessed by media organizations and poll watchdogs--mirrored results from Comelec’s central server during the previous elections.

Comelec chair George Garcia, quoted by ABS-CBN News, said for the upcoming polls, election results from the precinct level would be simultaneously sent to the media, election watchdogs, majority and minority political parties, and city and municipal board of canvassers.

“Meaning to say, they will be able to counter-check each and every precinct being sent to their servers,” Garcia said. He said poll watchdogs such as the National Citizens’ Movement for Free Elections and Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting could “immediately conduct a quick count” using QR codes from the election receipts.

The new election transmission system also allows the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) “to have a mirror” of the results sent to the Comelec data center, the official said.

The Comelec hopes that the new system will be more transparent than the previous one, which faced allegations of a so-called middleman that were disproven later on, Garcia said.

The poll body is set to award the P1.4-billion transmission contract for next year’s polls to the joint venture of Filipino companies iOne Resources, Inc. and Ardent Networks, Inc.

Earlier, the Comelec said nearly 2 million new registered voters have registered for the 2025 national and local elections as of the first week of April.

The Comelec said it may also exceed its 3 million target before the September deadline.

Dela Rosa says ROTC bill will be approved by a ‘slim margin’

SENATOR Ronald Dela Rosa on Wednesday said he sees the passage of the mandatory Reserve Officers’ Training Corps (ROTC) Bill or Senate Bill (SB) 2034 in the Senate, but only by a “slim margin.”

“My own personal estimate is that we will win by a slim margin. If there will be voting, we will win by a slim margin,” Dela Rosa, who is the sponsor of the bill, said.

He said he expects the approval of the bill before President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivered his third State of the Nation Address (SONA) in July.

After Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri committed to continue the deliberations on the mandatory ROTC Bill in May, Dela Rosa is confident this priority measure of the current administration will be approved.

“I am optimistic that the bill making the ROTC mandatory will be approved by the Senate,” he said.

Maintaining his commitment to enact the measure, Dela Rosa disclosed that he requested Zubiri to tackle SB 2304 and have the measure decided upon by the 24-man chamber.

“I talked to the Senate president that it should be calendared when we return (to the (Senate) so there will already be results, whether we like it or not,” he said. Dela Rosa said people who want the measure or those pro-ROTC bill have been prodding him for the measure. Congress is currently on break and it is set to resume sessions on April 29. He reiterated the need for the program, more especially with the aggression in the West Philippine Sea (WPS).

“With or without the West Philippine Sea issue, we really need that. How much more that we have pending threat from the West Philippine Sea. So the more that we have to prepare. There’s no compromise for defense,” the senator, a former chief of police, said.

Rep. Janette Garin said proposed economic amendments in the Constitution Change will make the Philippines more friendly to foreign investments and should attract more investors to its shores. Garin made the assessment in response to two adverse economic outlooks on the Philippines from foreign institutions.

On March 29, the US Trade Representative cited foreign ownership limitations in the Philippines as one of the barriers to trade and investments, while the Milken Institute’s Global Opportunity Index (GOI) report for 2024 said the country ranked 91st out of 130 nations when it comes to attractiveness to foreign investors due to financial access.

He also cited data from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (NDRRMC) and Task Force El Niño, which said the dry spell has affected more than 50,000 farmers, mostly rice farmers.

Data also shows that the country’s estimated cost of agricultural damage because of El Niño has reached P2.63 billion to date and drove almost 20 local government units to declare states of calamities in their respective areas.

Villafuerte bats for free trade zone in Camarines

CAMARINES Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte pushed for the enactment of a measure that will create the Camarines Sur Free Trade Zone that aims to spur economic growth in the region.

At the same time, Villafuerte welcomed the government’s move to ease the five-year moratorium on the creation of new special economic zones (SEZs). Villafuerte, author of House Bill 3681 which seeks the creation of the CamSur economic zone, the bill once enacted will also help President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to meet his goal of creating an environment that is much more conducive to generating investments and creating quality jobs.

“For the economy to grow a lot faster, the NEDA (National Economic and Development Authority) believes there will have to be more jobs and investments generated outside Metro Manila,” said Villafuerte, former governor and incumbent representative of Camarines Sur.

“And I believe one sure way to create abundant jobs and investment opportunities outside the national capital that would turbocharge regional growth is to put up more SEZs in the regions that would become magnets for local and foreign direct investments,” he added.

On a recent road trip

NOT knowing that April 10 would be declared a holiday, one of my daughters arranged for a weekend trip to Tali Beach in Nasugbu, Batangas for us to celebrate in advance the birthday of her daughter Stella which was on April 9.

Family and a few close friends of the celebrant went on a four-vehicle convoy that passed from SLEX to Carmona, thence Trece Martires to Gen. Trias, Naic and then Ternate to Nasugbu, passing through a tunnel on the Cavite-Batangas border.

Traffic was moderately heavy last Saturday in some portions of SLEX, Trece Martires, Gen. Trias and Naic, but a smooth flow along winding and scenic roads greeted us from Ternate to Tali, passing by Hamilo Coast with views of Corregidor and the famed Pico de Loro (parrot’s beak) mountaintop.

One of my lamentable observations is how local eateries have been pushed out by the many fast food chains that now dot every major population center from the Ilocos to Mindanao

Cavite has become the most populous province in the country, yet less than 20 percent of its residents are “taal na Kabitenyo,” most being transferees from dense Metro Manila, with Cavite to the south and the first district of Laguna providing accessible havens.

The Manila to western Batangas passing through Aguinaldo Highway route was once a favorite drive in my VW beetle of college days, when traffic was hardly annoying, and even now-crowded Matabungkay in Lian was pristine.

Since I haven’t passed the lengthy Governor’s Drive that connects SLEX to western Cavite for a long time, I saw the ubiquitous shopping malls with the usual fast food chains dotting every major population center all the way to Naic.

Quite ubiquitous too are SM’s small groceries, called Alfamart, and newcomer Dali, which now compete with Taiwan’s 7-11, altogether making the Filipino “sari-sari” store on its way to complete extinction.

Sad. Even in the lowest of the value chain, the giants have killed the micro-entrepreneurs.

The view of the sea which brought gentle breezes to the balcony of our

borrowed Tali Beach house, made for perfect conversation over wine and “pulutan.”

Topics from the rising cost of living which has affected everyone, the mega-rich excepted, to El Nino and climate change, to the future of the “saling-lahi”were grist for the mill.

Of course, everyone was asking this writer for “tea-leaves reading” on the recent Pulse Asia findings, which I would share with readers in due time.

Another topic was the conflict with China over the WPS, along with Taiwan, some of which we have written about in the last two columns. I had to leave the following morning for a luncheon in the Silang, Cavite house of a former government official, passing this time by the more familiar Nasugbu-Tagaytay highway.

Again, aside from the Jollibees and the McDos, I noticed the proliferation of shopping malls, along with the now ever-present Alfamart and Dali.

I wondered if the cheap but nice “halo-halo” topped by hand-shaved ice in the Nasugbu poblacion was still around or whether it has been “killed” by Chowking’s machine-crushed ice, or a favorite “Pansit Balita” where we used to buy cooked food before going to the beach in our college days.

One of my lamentable observations is how local eateries have been pushed out by the many fast food chains that now dot every major population center from the Ilocos to Mindanao.

“Sayang,” when native cuisine has been replaced by so-so Western food, and third generation taste buds have changed.

Most LGUs call it “progress” when they have a huge mall, or Jollibees and McDonalds in their towns. Not in my book though.

In Nasugbu as in Tagaytay, the conversation over a table groaning with home-cooked food prepared by our gracious host and his wife was about the same issues that friends mused about the previous night, but for “juicy” incidents and prognoses that I am not free to write about, being shared in confidence.

Heavy with food, drink and the serious discussions in Tagaytay, I got back to Tali early evening and chose to play with the grandchildren in the pool, after their whole day in the beach.

Later last Sunday night, this time alone in the balcony as tired family members went to bed around eleven, I wondered about the kind of future our children and grandchildren would have in a world fraught with conflicts amid fast technological change.

How the world has changed, indeed.

Yet the country seems to be caught in deep freeze, where progress measured by increasing GDP has not improved the quality of life of the many who continue to exist in abject poverty.

We need to talk to China

WE NEED to be talking to the Chinese no matter how some senior officials in government view their intransigence on the WPS issue.

If the two major powers China and the United States can talk, there is no reason why we cannot do the same. Prudence simply dictates that we should.

For one, it is better for the government to communicate our official position clearly and directly to the Chinese government instead of those among us who seem to be parroting the Chinese narrative hijacks and muddle the already very complicated WPS issue.

Here we are, a Lilliputian country engaged in a monumental rhetorical struggle with a giant country that refuses to abide by an international treaty that it signed, yet some of our

own citizens appear to be doing the bidding of that country.

What could be their motivations? It is a huge mystery. Just when the country badly needs all hands on deck, there are some of us who are going the opposite direction. Unfortunately, human nature is like that. There will always be people willing to do their own country harm. It is for this reason that talking may be able to lower the temperature.

It can also help show that we are not a pawn of the US as China seem to think.

The last several days has also been full of news both locally and internationally on the WPS issue.

China did its own so-called combat patrol and we did our own together with our allies, the US, Japan and

WAmnesty for rebels

E HAILED the proclamation issued by the Marcos administration last November granting amnesty to former members of four rebel groups, including the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army-National Democratic Front (CPPNPA-NDF).

We said then this was an important step forward in restoring peace after decades of armed conflict.

But the directive recently issued by the President to the National Task Force to End Local Communist Armed Conflict (NTF-Elcac) to expand the amnesty program to include around 1,500 communist rebels who have yet to lay down their arms and return to the fold of the law, while laudable, is not likely to lead to peace within the foreseeable future.

Why? Because it sets a precondition: that it will apply only after a comprehensive peace agreement between the

government and the communist rebels shall have been signed.

Considering that peace talks between the government and the communist-led National Democratic Front have proceeded in fits and starts and achieved limited success since 1987, and even totally collapsed during the previous administration, there’s little hope the next round of peace talks, if it is held at all, will lead to a comprehensive agreement acceptable to both sides.

Our pessimism stands on solid ground.

While the NDF has agreed to hold peace talks with the government, the underground political structure and guerrilla forces of the rebels will be unrelenting in their efforts to achieve political power through the barrel of the gun

IN THE murky depths of geopolitical turmoil, the Philippines is ensnared in a lethal dance with relentless Chinese aggression, haunted by the ghosts of past betrayals and shattered dreams of American solidarity.

As the ominous clouds of uncertainty gather overhead, a crucial rendezvous looms on April 11 among US President Biden, Japan’s Prime Minister Kishida, and President Marcos, beckoning amidst escalating Chinese pressure, uniting nations in a highstakes waltz of diplomacy and defense.

Backtracking through history’s blood-soaked corridors, the Philippines finds itself locked in a familiar struggle against Chinese expansionism, scarred by the cold-blooded annexation of Scarborough Shoal in 2012, only to be met with empty promises from the US.

Despite a favorable ruling in 2016 by the Permanent Court of Arbitration, Beijing’s dismissive stance and American indifference shroud the RPUS alliance in a cloud of doubt.

But we should do it in keeping with our humble capability.

One paper even printed about our NSA Chief calling China’s bluff.

What bluff exactly was the paper talking about?

We really should not be like a fly that happens to be at the back of an

While the NDF agreed to hold talks with the Philippine government in Oslo last year, the CPP and the NPA have issued separate statements during their respective anniversaries ordering their members and fighters to pursue armed struggle until they have achieved victory in the battlefield.

We take this to mean that while their political arm, which is the NDF, has agreed to hold peace talks with the government, the underground political structure and guerrilla forces of the rebels will be unrelenting in their efforts to achieve political power through the barrel of the gun.

In other words, the NPA will not go back to their barracks even as peace talks at the national level are ongoing, but will continue to engage the armed forces at every possible opportunity as part of ‘‘people’s war’’ aimed at encircling the cities from the countryside according to Maoist dictum.

With both the CPP and its armed component unwilling to give up the armed struggle even as peace talks are ongoing between the government and the NDF, the planned amnesty for rebels to be implemented only after a comprehensive peace agreement has been reached after the expected protracted negotiations is as good as dead in the water as of now.

Betrayed by allies and foes: PH’s perilous struggle

ligerent maneuvers persist, testing the Philippines’ mettle as it fights to safeguard its maritime sovereignty. President Marcos, a lone figure standing firm against the tempest, seeks solace in revived alliances, fortifying defense pacts and procuring crucial military hardware from stalwart allies like India.

Amidst the shadows, Japan and India whisper promises of solidarity, offering a glimmer of hope against China’s relentless advance

With tensions on the rise, the stakes soar to dizzying heights, as Filipino hopes soar to fever pitch.

While US rhetoric pledges steadfast

elephant but is now thinking that it is the elephant.

Part of the problem from our end is that everybody can issue statements.

As I have tried to point out in previous pieces, we should only have one agency do the talking and that should be the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The DFA has certain ways of issuing diplomatic statements which are direct to the point, yet formulated in such a way that it will not strike listeners as bellicose.

And with due respect to the President, he should also refrain from directly issuing statements because with him doing the talking, there will be no room for any other interpretation.

We have not seen the President of China issuing regular statements on what is happening in the WPS.

It is only the Ministry of Foreign Affairs Spokesperson doing all the talking and we should be doing the same thing.

We should bear in mind that sitting down with the Chinese to talk does not mean that we have to give in to them or pointless because of the belief they

support, lingering suspicions remain over the sincerity of American vows, leaving Manila braced for a bitter taste of past treachery. Yet amidst the shadows, Japan and India whisper promises of solidarity, offering a glimmer of hope against China’s relentless advance.

But it is America that holds the key to the Philippines’ destiny, its actions reverberating throughout the region, molding perceptions of security and stability.

As the world looks on, the Philippines stands at a crossroads, grappling with the weight of history and the fog of an uncertain future.

Will the Biden administration stay true to its word, or will the Philippines be left to fend for itself once more?

In the murky waters of geopolitics, where deeds speak louder than words, the Philippines navigates perilous seas, praying fervently that history won’t loop back on itself.

For in the crucible of conflict, the destiny of nations hangs by a thread, and the echoes of past betrayals ring out with bone-chilling clarity.

will not budge from their position.

But there might be other areas

wherein some agreements can be reached on much lesser issues.

Who knows, we might be able to convince them to refer the issue to the International Court of Justice for arbitration.

Anything is possible when two parties are talking.

At the very least, the tension will simmer down.

As another senior NSA official also said, a conflict in the WPS will not serve any purpose to any country.

And for those very brave people among us, let us not forget that we do not have an Air Force to speak of.

Most of our new naval assets are Offshore Patrol Boats.

We have two frigates with another two corvettes under construction and a land force more suited for counter insurgency warfare. We should just keep quiet and work hard to prepare.

Maybe then, we will be more capable but not right now.

Sometimes, silence is golden. Let’s remember also that it will be us who will do most of the fighting if ever.

BANGKOK – Thailand’s attorney general on Wednesday postponed until May a decision over whether to indict ex-leader Thaksin Shinawatra in a royal insult case.

The divisive billionaire, twice elected premier and ousted in a 2006 military coup, was released on parole earlier this year after being jailed for

graft and abuse-of-power charges upon his return from exile in 2023. Thailand has some of the world’s strictest royal defamation laws protecting King Maha Vajiralongkorn and his close family, with each charge bringing a potential 15-year prison sentence.

The lese-majeste case relates to

comments Thaksin made in 2015 while living in self-imposed exile. The 74-year-old has denied the charge. “The attorney general has not decided on the case as investigators have not yet sent all the papers,” said Prayuth Pecharakun, Office of the Attorney General spokesperson.

“The Office has decided to make the decision on 29 May,” he said, adding Thaksin’s lawyer had been informed. Thaksin returned to Thailand in August after 15 years of self-exile and was immediately jailed for eight years on charges dating back to his time in power. AFP

Thai attorney general delays decision on Thaksin royal insult case Israel to respond to court petition to increase aid on besieged Strip

JERUSALEM – Israel faced a Wednesday deadline to present to the country’s top court measures to increase aid into the besieged Gaza Strip, where hunger is spreading after more than six months of war.

Five non-profit groups have taken the state to court, accusing authorities of restricting the entry of relief items and failing to respect their “obligations as an occupying power” to provide basic necessities to Gazans. Israel, which has been fighting militants in the Hamas-ruled territory since the October 7 attack, has insisted it does not limit aid supplies and blames shortages on a lack of distribution by aid agencies and charities within Gaza.

“Contrary to Israel’s claims that there was no limit on entry of aid to Gaza, several policy choices are hindering” aid delivery, said Miriam Marmur, of rights group Gisha, one of the plaintiffs.

She said that following a hearing last week, the Supreme Court ordered the government to provide an update by Wednesday regarding steps taken to increase the flow of humanitarian goods.

Once the state submits its response, “the petitioning organisations will be given five days to respond to it, after which the court could give its ruling,” Marmur told AFP.

While Israel has largely blamed the United Nations for not distributing aid properly inside Gaza, UN and humanitarian officials have denounced restrictions and administrative brakes on the entry of severely needed supplies.

Officials point to UN figures of at least 500 aid and commercial trucks a day entering Gaza before the war.

On Tuesday, Israeli authorities said 468 trucks had been let in, the highest reported number since the current fighting began.

A spokesman for the United Nations’ humanitarian office, OCHA, pointed to statistics from March showing that it was much more difficult to get clearance for delivering food into Gaza than other aid.

“Food convoys that should be going particularly to the north, where 70 percent of people face famine conditions, are... three times more likely to be denied than any other humanitarian convoys with other kinds of material,” Jens Laerke told reporters in Geneva on Tuesday. AFP

After Mideast tour, Spain PM to address MPs on Gaza

MADRID – Spain’s Pedro Sanchez, whose criticism of the Gaza war has raised tensions with Israel, on Wednesday addresses parliament on the conflict in remarks expected to clarify plans to recognize a Palestinian state.

The prime minister regularly addresses parliament after returning from summits or diplomatic trips such as his three-day visit to Jordan, Saudi Arabia and Qatar on April 1-3.

The trip, which was focused on Gaza, was overshadowed by an Israeli drone strike on a humanitarian convoy of the World Central Kitchen, killing seven staffers of the NGO which was founded by Spanish-American celebrity chef Jose Andres.

US ‘will hold China responsible’ if Russia gains in Ukraine war

WASHINGTON, DC – The United States warned Tuesday (Wednesday in Manila) that it will hold China responsible if Moscow makes gains in Ukraine, after Beijing renewed pledges of cooperation during a visit by Russia’s top diplomat.

Kurt Campbell, the deputy secretary of state long associated with regearing US policy toward Asia, said that for the United States, maintaining peace and stability in Europe is “our most important mission historically.”

With Moscow renewing its Ukraine offensive amid a deadlock in the US Congress on approving more weapons to Ukraine, Campbell warned that Russian territorial gains could “alter the balance of power in Europe in ways that are, frankly, unacceptable.”

“We have told China directly, if this continues, it will have an impact on the US-China relationship. We will not sit by and say everything is fine,” Campbell said.

“We will see this not as just a Rus-

sian unique set of activities but a conjoined set of activities backed by China but also North Korea. This is antithetical to our interests,” he told the National Committee on US-China Relations, an educational group.

Campbell was responding to a question about a visit Tuesday by Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov to China, where President Xi Jinping told him that Beijing was ready to strengthen coordination.

Campbell said that President Joe Biden’s administration had warned Chinese officials in advance of intelligence indicating Russian President Vladimir Putin would order an invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.

“I’m not sure they completely believed us, or thought that maybe it would be a smaller thing, not an all-out move and push,” Campbell said.

Campbell said China was alarmed to see Russia’s early setbacks and worked to rebuild a “whole variety of capacities” for Moscow. AFP

The WCK staffers were in Gaza to deliver food when their convoy was hit by three missiles, with Sanchez denouncing the “brutal attack”.

“I expect and demand that the Israeli government clarify as soon as possible the circumstances of this brutal attack that has taken the lives of seven aid workers who were doing nothing but helping,” he said while visiting a Palestinian refugee camp in Jordan.

The Gaza war erupted on Oct. 7 when Hamas militants stormed over the border into Israel killing around 1,170 people, mostly civilians, according to an AFP tally based on official Israeli figures. They also took more than 250 hos-

tages, 129 of whom are still in Gaza, 34 of them dead, the Israeli army says. Israel struck back with an unrelenting military campaign that has so far killed at least 33,360, mostly women and children, according to the health ministry in the Gaza Strip, which has been run by Hamas since 2007. Spain’s Socialist leader has repeatedly angered Israel with his outspoken comments.

In February, Sanchez and his Irish counterpart Leo Varadkar asked the European Union to “urgently” examine whether Israel was complying with its human rights obligations in Gaza as laid out in a key accord that links rights to trade ties. AFP

Ecuador’s ex-VP Glas, 54, arrested in Mexico’s embassy, back in jail

GUAYAQUIL, Ecuador – Ecuador’s ex-vice president Jorge Glas, whose capture in a dramatic raid on Mexico’s embassy in Quito sparked a global outcry, was back in prison Tuesday after a short hospital stay, officials said. Glas, 54, was admitted to the hospital on Monday after he refused to eat for 24 hours while detained at the Guayaquil maximum security prison, officials said, where he was taken after being captured last Friday.

The former vice president was taken back to his cell Tuesday, the SNAI prisons authority reported, after his health recovered to “acceptable parameters.”

Ecuador security forces stormed the embassy on Friday night, a rare incursion on what is considered inviolable diplomatic territory, to arrest Glas, who had been granted asylum by Mexico.

Glas -- who had already served time on corruption charges -- was the subject of a fresh arrest warrant for alleg-

edly diverting funds intended for reconstruction efforts after a devastating earthquake in 2016.

The intrusion triggered a political storm, with Mexico, several other Latin American states, Spain, the European Union and the UN chief condemning it as a violation of the 1961 Vienna Convention governing international relations.

Mexico, which cut diplomatic relations and pulled its embassy personnel from Ecuador, said it would file a complaint at the International Court of Justice in The Hague.

On Tuesday, the White House issued a condemnation of the raid.

“The Ecuadoran government disregarded its obligations under international law as a host state to respect the inviolability of diplomatic missions, and jeopardize the foundation of basic diplomatic norms in relationships,” said National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan. AFP

PALESTINIAN Territories – US President Joe Biden issued some of his sternest criticism yet of Israel’s war on Hamas, calling its approach a “mistake” as the country faces a Wednesday court deadline to prove it is not throttling aid to hungerstricken Gaza.

With global outrage over the toll inflicted by the six-month-old war growing, Biden rebuked Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s handling of the conflict and reiterated the need for a ceasefire.

“I think what he’s doing is a mistake. I don’t agree with his approach,” Biden told Spanish-language TV network Univision in an interview that aired Tuesday night.

He urged Netanyahu “to just call for a ceasefire, allow for the next six, eight weeks, total access to all food and medicine going into the country”, in remarks that underscored the dramatic shift in tone from Israel’s main ally and military backer.

Biden’s comments come as US, Qatari and Egyptian mediators seek progress on a truce and hostage release deal that also proposes ramping up aid deliveries to address a worsening hunger crisis in the Gaza Strip.

Israel insists it is not limiting aid and has complied with US and United Nations demands to scale up the deliveries.

The government faces a Wednesday deadline from the country’s Supreme Court to demonstrate it has taken steps to increase the flow of humanitarian goods.

The case was brought by five NGOs that accuse Israel of restricting the entry of relief items and failing to provide basic necessities to Gazans.

The UN’s agency for Palestinian refugees, UNRWA, said Tuesday that following reports of imminent famine, more than 40 percent of food delivery missions were denied in February and March. None of the UNRWA food convoys have been approved since March, it added. AFP

Reclusive Taliban leader makes rare Eid appearance

KaABUL, Afghanistan – The Taliban’s hyper-reclusive supreme leader made a rare public appearance Wednesday, an Afghan government spokesman said, leading thousands of worshippers in prayers marking Eid al-Fitr. Hibatullah Akhundzada has made only a handful of public appearances since inheriting leadership of the Taliban in 2016 and leading the movement back to power with the withdrawal of US forces in 2021.

Taliban government spokesman

Zabihullah Mujahid said prayer in the largest mosque in Kandahar was “performed under the leadership of the supreme leader.”

In a statement on social media platform X, he said the early-morning service “was attended by thousands of compatriots” in the southern province considered the birthplace of the Taliban movement.

There is only one photograph of Akhundzada. Press have generally been barred from attending his public engagements and Afghan attendees forbidden from taking photos or recording on their phones.

He previously appeared in Kandahar marking 2022’s Eid al-Fitr with a speech congratulating Afghans “on victory, freedom and success”, his back to the crowd to preserve his anonymity.

Cycle PH sets sights on bigger ‘25 staging

THE recent Sun Life Cycle PH event at Vermosa Sports Hub in Imus City, Cavite has successfully cultivated an enthusiasm for a healthier, more active lifestyle among Filipino families, evidenced by an unprecedented turnout of 1,385 participants.

This figure marks a significant 38.5 percent increase from the previous year, showcasing the event’s growing appeal despite challenging 38-degree weather conditions.

The Cycle PH, organized by the IRONMAN Group, marked a comprehensive celebration of cycling’s inclusive spirit. It featured a variety of cycling categories, accommodating every age and skill level – from 30km and 45km individual rides to a 60km corporate challenge and a family-friendly ride allowing children aged 6-15 to bike alongside an adult.

Princess Galura, Regional Director of IRONMAN Group, highlighted the event’s safe and joyful atmosphere, attributing its success to the solid partnership with Vermosa Sports Hub and Sun Life, a collaboration that has spanned over a decade. She also emphasized that the essence of the event lies in its encouragement of a healthier lifestyle for all, not just seasoned athletes.

Celebrity Piolo Pascual, a longtime advocate of Sun Life’s mission since their partnership began in 2009 through his foundation, graced the event, and his presence did not only add star power but also reinforce the event’s message of community growth, healthier living, and the inspiration it aims to instill in people to embrace active lifestyles.

“Through the years, we’ve been growing as a community and thinking of ways to not just attract, people but to inspire to live healthier lives,” said Pascual.

Sun Life has also confirmed its commitment to stage Cycle PH next year with Don Aaron Peji, head of Sun Life’s Brand Strategy and Management, describing the event as a partnership in promoting healthier lives.

“Sun Life is about partnership, so in fact, our tagline is ‘partners for life.’ And in a way, this event is like a partnership. We want everyone to take part in promoting a healthier life,” he said. “We are coming back at Vermosa next year.”

The Philippines is the solo host of the FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Championship 2024.

THE Capital1 Solar Boys and the Say Chiz Smileys picked up close wins to conclude the elimination round on a high note in the 2024 Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium on Tuesday, April 9.

The Solar Boys claimed the no. 1 seed after fending off the Smart Sports Scribes in a battle of the top two squads, 69-66, while the Smileys escaped with a comeback 73-71 win against the Strong Group Athletics Press Row Bros.

Up by two, 68-66, Capital1 produced a defensive brilliance when the team was able to strip a driving Julio Sampedro of UAAP Varsity Channel to prevent a game-tying shot.

The Philippine STAR’s Bryan Ulanday the split his free throws with a fraction of a second left to seal the deal for Capital1 which finished the eliminations with a 5-1 record in the tournament which is one of the projects of PSA head Nelson Beltran, also of the STAR.

Capital1, however, led by as many as nine, 66-57, midway through the closing quarter after Ulanday knocked down a wing triple.

However, Smart did not surrender easily, clapping back with eight unanswered points capped off by Spin.ph’s Reuben Terrado’s threepoint play to make it 66-65 with two minutes to go.

Aldo Aviñante paced the Solar Boys with 22 points, while Ulanday chipped in 15 for the squad backed by Mandy and Milka Romero, Bulakan Mayor Vergel Meneses, Uratex, and Rebel Sports.

On the losing side, Cignal’s AJ Bolando had a 26-point performance, while Sampedro added 15 markers built on five triples as the Sports Scribes ended up second with a 4-2 record.

Spin.ph’s Reuben Terrado tallied a 10-point, 12-rebound double-double for the Danny Espiritu, Headstart Sports Academy, and BaliPurebacked team.

Meanwhile, in the second game, the Smileys leaned on an 11-3 run to pull the rug from under SGA, which was seeking its first win of the tournament.

First-year middle blocker Taguibolos led the balanced NU attack with 12 points on 9-of-13 attacks to go with three blocks.

Graduating outside spiker Nico

Almendras added 10 points and 11 digs, while Obed Mukaba and Leo Aringo each delivered nine points.

“Sa ngayon sobrang importante ‘yung game na ito kasi kailangan talaga namin manalo lalo sa sitwasyon ngayon na lahat ng teams sa itaas halos dikit dikit na,” said NU head coach Dante Alinsunurin. Jian Salarzon tried to put the Blue Eagles on his back, firing three straight points to pull them within three in the third frame, 18-21, but Nico Almendras and Peng Taguibolos retaliated for the Bulldogs to clinch the win and the spot in the semifinals in one hour and 27 minutes.

NU will be back on Sunday at the same Pasay venue against De La Salle University. “Kailangan namin mas pagbutihin pa ‘yung mga next games namin para makuha namin ‘yung twice-tobeat advantage,” said Alinsunurin.

This defeat was also a huge blow to Ateneo’s cause as it fell to 5-6, now two games behind fourth-running University of Santo Tomas at 7-4. Salarzon paced the Blue Eagles with 15 points and nine receptions, while Ken Batas logged 14 points. Ateneo will aim to

Del Rosario,

CAVINTI, Laguna—Pauline del Rosario birdied No. 18 from 14 feet to shoot a 69 then watched Princess Superal hole out with a bogey for a 71 in a separate flight in a crucial twoshot swing that set up a compelling showdown between two of the Ladies Philippine Golf Tour stalwarts for the ICTSI Caliraya Springs Championship crown here Tuesday. Del Rosario’s strong finish coupled with Superal’s shaky windup on a muffed par putt from 10 feet revived their long-standing rivalry from their junior golf days. They matched 142s to seize a three-stroke lead over Harmie Constantino, who assembled a 145 after a 73, in the P1 million, 54hole championship.

Apo leg winner Sarah Ababa rebounded from a 75 with a 73 to join Mafy Singson, who faltered with a 75, at 148, while reigning Order of Merit winner Daniella Uy birdied two of the last five holes to rescue a 71 and move to solo eighth place at 149.

Erstwhile co-leader Pamela Mariano struggled with a 79 after an impressive 71, tumbling down to joint ninth with Seoyun Kim, who carded a 74 at 150, now eight strokes off the lead. Looking ahead to the final 18 holes of the third leg of the circuit put up by ICTSI, del Rosario remarked on the familiarity of competing against the former US Girls’ Junior champion in decisive moments, anticipating a thrilling face-

off between two of the circuit’s Order of Merit champions. “We have played together in the final group a lot growing up. It’s nothing new for us and we will both be excited to be paired again tomorrow (Thursday),” said del Rosario, who birdied two of the first nine holes to rebound from an opening 73.

Despite trading birdies and bogeys across the back nine, del Rosario’s determination shone through, especially motivated by the presence of her father, Bong, who was watching her play for the first time since the pandemic began. “Managing around the greens is my concern. But my goal and my mindset is to make my dad proud,” said the defending champion prepping up for the Epson Tour this month. Superal, who shared the first day

honors with Mariano, took solo control with a two-under card after 10 holes then negated her bogeys on Nos. 12 and 15 with back-to-back birdies from No. 16 to post a two-shot lead over del Rosario. But she failed to get up-and-down on the last hole and settled for a second straight 71.

Superal, the 2022 Asia Pacific Cup winner, acknowledged her short game as a crucial factor in her performance but highlighted the importance of precision with her iron shots to challenge del Rosario’s bid for a second consecutive title.

“My short game had worked for me in the first two days. But tomorrow, I need to improve on my iron game and be able to place the ball on the right spots,” said Superal, who is also set to resume her campaign in the Japan Step Up Tour later this month.

Parañaque trips Manila, Rizal stuns Pampanga

THE Parañaque Patriots surged ahead in the second quarter then weathered a fiery comeback by Manila SV Batang Sampaloc to prevail, 82-78, on Tuesday in the MPBL (Maharlika Pilipinas Basketball League) Sixth Season at the Villar Coliseum in Las Piñas.

Riding the hot hands of Jielo Razon and the all-around play of veteran Mark Yee, Parañaque erected a 52-29 spread which buffered the Patriots from the Batang Sampaloc’s fiery fourth quarter rally.

Tagged the underdog, Parañaque drew inspiration from Rizal XentroMall which toppled defending national champion Pampanga, 7871, earlier.

Razon fired 25 points, spiced by five triples, and grabbed 8 rebounds, while Yee, rejuvenated by the three-month break, tallied 18 points, including two triples, snagged 18 rebounds and blocked two attempts for the Patriots of Coach Michael Saguiguit.

John Rey Villanueva also shone for Parañaque with 15 points and 6 rebounds and so did Paul Sarao with 8 points and 4 rebounds, John Uduba with 7 points and 8 rebounds, and Philip Manalang with 11 assists and two points. Manila rallied in the fourth quarter behind Carl Bryan Cruz, but fell short as Razon and Sarao joined forces fo quell the uprising. Cruz, Fil-Am DJ Mitchell and Ahmad Didat Hanapi scored 13 each for Manila, which also got 10 points from Pao Javelona.

Trailing by as far as 13-32, Rizal tied Pampanga at halftime, 38-38, then controlled the rest of the way to join the ranks of the early leaders in the 30team league

Feeling the absence of reigning MPBL MVP Justine Baltazar, who showed up in street clothes, the Giant Lanterns fell behind, 64-74, in the fourth quarter from which they were unable to recover.

Kraniel Victoria tallied 16 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists and 3 steals while Keith Agovida posted 16 points, 6 rebounds, 6 assists and 3 steals for Rizal, which also drew 12 points, 13 rebounds and 4 assists from Alwyn Alday.

Beermen turn back Dyip, keep lead with 5th victory

THE

San Miguel Beermen kept the Terrafirma Dyip from taking a good outside shot in the dying seconds and won a close game, 113110, on Wednesday in the 48th Philippine Cup at the Ninoy Aquino Stadium.

SMB’s stingy defense of the threepoint area kept Isaac Go from taking a final three-point shot for Dyip, allowing the Beermen to keep the solo lead and escape with their fifth straight victory.

Mo Tautuaa unloaded 17 of his 24 points in the final period, with his layup in the last 15 seconds finalizing the count.

CJ Perez went on to finish with a gamehigh 25 points for the Beermen, who went through 12 lead changes with the Dyip.

“From the start of the game, the players were relaxed. And I was scared for that because the players thought Terrafirma was not there,” said Beermen coach Jorge Gallent.

“Terrafirma is not a pushover team anymore. It’s a fighting team,” added Gallent.

Juami Tiongson struck with 24 points for Dyip, who fell to fourth with their 4-2 slate.

Lady Bombers repulse Lady Generals in NCAA volley

JOSE Rizal University leaned on a balanced attack as it repulsed back Emilio Aguinaldo College, 25-20, 25-20, 25-23, on Wednesday to claim its first win in NCAA Season 99 women’s volleyball at the San Andres Gym.

Inday Laurente facilitated the attack of the Lady Bombers with 13 excellent sets, the biggest beneficiary of which was Karyla Jasareno, who uncorked 13 points as they snared their first win after falling to the University of Perpetual Help Altas, 25-14, 25-14, 25-21, Sunday.

Skipper Mary May Ruiz also delivered by chipping in nine hits.

“Nadistribute ni Inday ng mabuti yung bola,” said JRU coach Mia Tioseco. “Wala siyang specifically sinasabihan na pag set niya ng bola, ibato mo dito.”

“It’s more of basta kailangan ng points, kung sino nasa harap du’n niya bibibigay ‘yung bola,” she added.

Tioseco also said that the win helped her charges to realize they are capable of bigger things.

Go shot 21 points with Javi Gomez de Liano as he kept the Dyip within range, 110-111, in the remaining 42 seconds.

The Scores:

SAN MIGUEL 113 – Perez 25, Tauatua 24, Fajardo 20, Romeo 16, Cruz 9, Manuel 7, Lassiter 6, Trollano 5, Ross 1, Enciso 0, Teng 0

TERRAFIRMA 110 – Tiongson 24, Go 21, Gomez de Liano 21, Holt 18, Carino 9, Cahilig 6, Sangalang 5, Ramos 4, Alolino 2, Olivario 0, Calvo 0

QUARTERS: 24-26,, 45-54, 78-75, 113-110

Perez knocked in 11 points in the final canto, keeping the Beermen ahead with his two charities in the last 7:31, 92-89. Tiongson hit 10 points in the last 12 minutes for the Dyip, and forced a 100all tie in the last 4:09 with his floater.

“I’m happy they get to feel and marealize nila ‘yan ang game nila,” she said.

JRU is also trying to juggle rebuilding after it lost several key players from a season ago while trying to battle for a Final Four slot.

“We want to make the Final Four, but more importantly, I also want the younger ones to be able to fight during games, laban lang sila dapat,” said Tioseco. The Lady Generals sputtered to 0-2.

Fil-Am Bossong wants to carry PH flag in Paris

toria Bossong continues to knock on the door of Filipino athletics’ officials for a possible shot of representing the Philippines in the 2024 Paris Olympics and in future international meets.

The 20-year-old Bossong, a thirdyear student-athlete at Harvard University, almost hit the entry standard in the 2024 Paris Olympics after surpassing the Philippine national records in two outdoor meets last March. Bossong, who is preparing for the coming season of the US National Collegiate Athletic Association, earned the no. 1 ranking in 2024 NCAA Division I East Outdoor Qualifying List.

In the last weekend of March, Bossong ran the 800-meter finals of the Pepsi Florida Relays in two minutes and 92/100ths of a second for a gold medal and a time that was close to the Olympic entry standard time of 1:59.30.

Her clocking was considered the best time in the NCAA pre-season, much better than what Hayley Kitching of Penn State submitted at 2:01.17 for the silver in the same event.

Observers now see Bossong as one of the fastest runners in the collegiate pre-season this year.

Judy Kosgei of South Carolina also had the third best time of the season at 2:01.66, when she competed with Bossong.

Bossong’s supporters said she is now being considered for the US national team.

But her heart and mind tell her to compete for the Philippines, since Bossong started sending feelers to the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association last year. A week earlier in March, Bossong sprinted to a gold medal in 2:02.42 in the Hurricane Collegiate Invitationals, also in Florida. Her times surpassed the 2:13.44

Chan fuels title drive with 2nd 70, ties for lead

CAVINTI, Laguna—Rookie Aidric Chan put up another impressive performance, crafting a second straight two-under 70 to catch Tae Soo Kim at the helm midway through the ICTSI Caliraya Springs Championship at the Caliraya Springs Golf Club here Wednesday.

Philippine national mark of Jessica Barnard, achieved back in 2014. So far, Bossong already has four gold medals this year.

Bossong’s first came in the first week of March at the IC4A/ECA Indoor meet where she ran the women’s 400-meters in 52.72 seconds.

Her time was even better than the clocking of Lauren Hoffman, who established a Philippine national record of 53.71 last Feb. 9 at the Tiger Paw meet.

PATAFA secretary general Jasper Tanhueco said they have noted Bossong’s performance, taking her situation in consideration.

Bossong, according to Tanhueco will get her shot at representing the Philippines once she has completed the process of obtaining a Philippine passport. The family of Bossong originated from Puerto Galera in Oriental Mindoro. She graduated from Cheverus High School and was raised Cumberland, Maine.

Chan, rejuvenated by a switch back to his old putter, displayed his skill with a birdie spree from No. 12 that highlighted his growing confidence and adaptability on the Philippine Golf Tour, overcoming a two-bogey miscue and finding himself sharing the spotlight in a powerpacked field.

Despite an illustrious amateur career and a notable victory in the PGT Q-School in Davao, Chan’s pro debut was less than

ideal, finishing 40th at the Apo Golf Classic. But he quickly recovered, securing a tied for eighth place at the Rancho Palos Verdes Championship, demonstrating his potential and determination to excel.

“I used a new putter in Davao and it helped in the first two weeks. But unfortunately, I wasn’t stroking the ball well in the next two weeks, so I went back to my old putter,” said Chan, whose fourunder 140 total put him in step with the young Korean. After a solid 66 Tuesday, spiked by a near-flawless stint off the mound, Kim faced challenges with his driving accuracy in hot, windy conditions, leading to a 74 and a tie with Chan. His performance, marked by missed opportunities and a struggle to find fairways, set the stage for a pivotal third round battle.

“I hit a lot of bad drives at the front nine and I wasn’t able to scramble at all, so I made three bogeys,” said Kim, referring to his mishaps on Nos. 1, 5

and 6. He dropped another stroke on the par-5 12th against birdies on Nos. 4 and 17. “The wind was pretty strong but it didn’t affect my drives. I just missed them to the wrong side,” rued the 19-year-old Kim. “I just hope to hit more fairways and make more putts tomorrow (Thursday).” But the leaderboard is tightly packed with Clyde Mondilla (71), Keanu Jahns (71), Dino Villanueva (74) and Min Hyeok Yu, who fired the day’s best 68, all pooling 141s, and Angelo Que, eyeing his first PGT title in five years, also staying within striking distance at 142 despite a 73.

Jay Bayron, also seeking an end to a long title drought in the circuit sponsored by ICTSI, shot a 69 to tie defending champion Tony Lascuña, who turned in a 71, Sean Ramos, who struggled with a 74, and Rupert Zaragosa, who rallied with a 70, for eighth spot with 143s, just three strokes off the pace.

SMC’s tollway unit registered 20% net income growth in 2023

THE tollway unit of San Miguel Corp. said Wednesday its net income climbed 20 percent in 2023 on the back of higher revenues and lower costs.

SMC SLEX Inc. reported a net income of P4.17 billion in 2023, up from P3.48 billion in the previous year.

Toll revenue amounted to P7.05 billion, an increase of 10 percent from P6.44 billion in 2022.

South Luzon Expressway (SLEX) achieved an annual average daily traffic (AADT) of 351,722 in 2023, lower by 7 percent than the 2022 AADT of 376,267.

“The decrease of traffic volume count was mainly brought about by the implementation of seamless operations,” SMC SLEX said.

“With the removal of the TR3 toll plaza, vehicles will be counted at their respective exits. The change has no impact on the toll revenue,” it said.

Average transaction mode for the period was 82 percent for RFID and 18 percent for cash.

Most motorists traversing the SLEX are class 1 vehicles, accounting for 84 percent of total traffic volume in 2023

The AADT in SLEX registered a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 4.5 percent last year, lower than 5.6 percent in 2022.

“With the re-opening of the economy in 2022, the industrial and socio-economic activities in the Calabarzon area are expected to gain strength again and enhance the traffic volume in 2023,” SMC SLEX said. Darwin G. Amojelar

PH, US, Japan meet to boost investments

THE Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Wednesday the upcoming trilateral economic ministers meeting among the Philippines, Japan and the United States will support more investments in the country.

The meeting in Washington D.C. on April 11, 2024 will bring together US Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, Japan’s METI Minister Ken Saito and DTI Secretary Alfredo Pascual to explore new trade and investment avenues that promise to generate business, create jobs and foster sustainability.

Pascual said the DTI remains focused on further attracting significant investments in essential sectors and other high-growth industries. By bolstering these foundational industries, the Philippines can create a more robust and resilient economy, he said.

The agency said past engagements, including Raimondo’s successful trade and investment mission to the Philippines and discussions during the ASEAN-Japan Economic CoCreation Forum, set the stage for future collaborations. These efforts underscore the robust economic ties among the three countries.

Under the leadership of President Marcos Jr., the Philippines is keen on enhancing its investment climate.

The upcoming trilateral meeting is expected to unlock further trade and investment opportunities in line with the government’s objectives to improve infrastructure, upskill workers, ensure environmental sustainability and invigorate the private sector with meaningful initiatives, the DTI said.

The DTI also highlighted the positive trend in FDIs in January 2024, based on data from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP). Othel V. Campos

Foreign direct investment inflows jumped 90% to $907m in January

NET inflows of foreign direct investments (FDI) reached $907 million in January 2024, up by 89.9 percent from the $478-million net inflows seen in the same month last year, the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) said Wednesday.

The increase in FDI was supported mainly by the 173.2-percent expansion in non-residents’ net investments in debt instruments to $820 million from $300 million in January 2023.

Reinvestment of earnings also increased by 16.4 percent to $99

million from $85 million.

Meanwhile, non-residents’ net investments in equity capital (other than reinvestment of earnings) posted net outflows of $11 million in January 2024 from the $93-million net inflows in January 2023. Equity capital placements during

the period came largely from Japan and the United States. The BSP said the investments went mostly to manufacturing, real estate, construction and wholesale and retail trade industries. “The latest year-on-year improvement in the FDI data, still among pre-pandemic highs, may have to do with improved economic and financial markets performance in recent months, such as the easing headline inflation trend towards the central bank targets that could support/justify Fed rate cuts and local policy rate cuts later in 2024,” said Michael Ricafort, chief economist of Rizal Commercial Banking Corp.

prospects for development. The world needs to act urgently to address this crisis exacerbated by extreme weather events and geopolitical conflicts,” said ADB president Masatsugu Asakawa at the Asia and the Pacific Food Security Forum 2024 in Manila.

“We need to accelerate food systems transformation by safeguarding and reinvesting in the region’s natural capital and ecosystems, bolstering support for farmers and agribusinesses and facilitating open trade for efficient food distribution,” he said. ADB supports efforts to safeguard food security in Afghanistan, Bangladesh,

Indonesia, Nepal, Pakistan, the People’s Republic of China, the Philippines, Solomon Islands and other members.

Following the call for stronger partnerships for food systems transformation, ADB signed a cooperation agreement with the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research (CGIAR), the world’s largest publicly funded group of agri-food systems research centers. The agreement will help ADB scale up proven innovative technologies developed by CGIAR centers to address food and water security, climate, and nutrition challenges. Darwin G. Amojelar

Filinvest Development Corp. (FDC) of the Gotianun family expects its net income to reach prepandemic levels this year as core businesses deliver strong growth.

FDC president and chief executive Rhoda Huang said in a press briefing the group aimed to grow its net income by at least 20 percent annually over the next five years. “This year,” Huang said, when asked when FDC’s net income would return to pre pandemic levels.

Filinvest expects profit to hit pre-pandemic levels this year US officials probing whistleblower claims of defects on Boeing 787, 777

FDC recorded a record profit of P12 billion in 2019. This went down to P8.46 billion in 2020, P6 billion in 2021 and P5.65 billion in 2022 due to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

THE proposal of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to pursue the development of nearby provinces and cities to decongest Metro Manila is, perhaps, the only pragmatic solution to the traffic gridlock. The nation’s chief executive is likely referring the migration of future or current economic activities to areas outside of the urban capital as a way to declog Metro Manila. Sure, new and expanded roads and railway networks will ease traffic in the metropolis—but they can only provide quick fix remedies to the urban snarl.

As I’ve written in my previous, a growing population, the lack of mass transportation system and wide roads, and the continuous migration of workers from the provinces have created the perfect storm that is causing mayhem in the whole of the capital region.

The traffic situation in the metropolis may get worse even before it improves. Growing vehicle sales in the Philippines are further constricting the capacities of the roads in Metro Manila.

The capital region is clearly ripe for a sweeping decongestion starting with a moratorium on the creation

profit jumped 58 percent to P8.9 billion, boosted by increased revenues across its business segments.

This was on the back of a 33-percent increase in consolidated revenues to P17.2 billion, driven by higher volume and average selling prices.

The group’s banking and financial services delivered a net income contribution to the group of P4.6 billion, equivalent to 39 percent of FDC’s bottom line.

The property business, composed of the real estate and hospitality segments, delivered a combined P3.8 billion or 32 percent of the total.

The power subsidiary contributed P2.9 billion in net income or 24 percent of the total, while the balance of 5 percent came from other businesses.

“We look forward to sustaining the strong momentum in 2023,” Huang said.

FDC has strategic holdings in key industries such as real estate development and leasing, banking and financial services, hotel and resort management, power generation and sugar.

It recently ventured into infrastructure space and renewable energy to provide new growth opportunities for the company.

NEW YORK—Federal aviation authori-

ties are investigating claims by a Boeing engineer that the 787 Dreamliner suffers from assembly defects that threaten safety, US officials said Tuesday. Attorneys for the whistleblower, Sam Salehpour, accuse the company of putting profit over safety -- and retaliating against him after he raised concerns by “involuntarily” transferring him to the 777 program.

At the 777 program, he raised more issues, for which his attorneys say he was threatened with termination.

The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed the investigation after the claims were outlined in a New York Times article describing charges from Salehpour, who has been at Boeing more than 10 years.

“Rather than heeding his warnings, Boeing prioritized getting the planes to market as quickly as possible, despite the known, well-substantiated issues Mr. Salehpour raised,” said attorneys Debra Katz and Lisa Banks, who pointed to “critical defects” on nearly 1,500 Boeing planes.

Boeing, which has been under scrutiny following recent safety problems, released a detailed defense of the aircraft, saying it is “fully confident” in the Dreamliner and denying charges it retaliated against the worker.

A Senate investigative committee has scheduled a hearing for April 17 titled “Examining Boeing’s Broken Safety Culture: Firsthand Accounts,” said a spokesperson for Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal. AFP

Urban decongestion provides real solution to traffic gridlock

—“—

Nearby provinces, cities and towns can accommodate these new hubs in time for the completion of mega infrastructure projects...

of new economic centers that attract more foot traffic, including light industries, mega malls, schools and universities.

Nearby provinces, cities and towns can accommodate these new hubs in time for the completion of mega infrastructure projects, such as the 147-kilometer North South Commuter Railways (NSCR) and the 32.15-kilometer Bataan-Cavite Interlink Bridge (BCIB), or Manila Bay Bridge.

President Marcos is spot on in his Sunday vlog. “Traffic is one of our biggest problems in this country. Sadly, it’s been a part of every Filipino’s life, and the traffic in the Philippines is notorious all over the world,” Mr. Marcos said. “Metro Manila is congested. So part of the plan is to develop the neighboring provinces and cities.”

Overdevelopment

The overdevelopment of Metro Manila has attracted migrant workers from nearby provinces, resulting in increased transport demand and road traffic. A study conducted by by the Japan International Cooperation Agency in 2018 revealed that traffic congestion in Metro Manila was costing the Phil-

ippines P3.5 billion a day.

The capital region also emerged as the area with the worst traffic congestion in 2023, per the traffic index of digital navigation site TomTom. The index showed that driving 10 kilometers in Metro Manila took about 25 minutes and 30 seconds last year, 50 seconds slower than in 2022.

Developing and improving mobility in Metro Manila’s nearby provinces such as Bulacan, Pampanga, Laguna and Cavite, according to Mr. Marcos, are among the priorities that will address the traffic problems.

He also ordered concerned agencies to provide a comprehensive and holistic approach to fix the country’s worsening traffic system.

Anticipating more traffic congestions and providing solutions to them should also guide our policymakers.

Transforming the Ninoy Aquino International Airport (NAIA) into a modern hub, for one,, could worsen the traffic congestion in the capital region. The airport’s makeover will enable it to serve up to 70 million passengers a year efficiently, or more

than double its current capacity.

Like what I wrote before, a modern NAIA with a much bigger passenger capacity will certainly contribute to the traffic logjam in Metro Manila, unless its proponent offers a solution to address the gridlock it will create.

NAIA and its increased passenger capacity should not contribute to traffic congestion if it takes advantage of available railway links. Modern urban centers in the world build and design their airports with a rail link to improve the accessibility of passengers to downtown areas or, in some cases, suburbs or distant cities.

Game changer

Meanwhile, one game changer, if property implemented and without political interference from national and local officials, is the Manila Bay Bridge, a climate-resilient bridge that will connect Bataan and Cavite provinces across Manila Bay and decongest Metro Manila traffic. Few will argue about the economic benefits of the mega infrastructure project. The Asian Development Bank says it will enable greater

mobility of labor and goods and enhance economic productivity in the country’s largest region of Luzon.

It will complete the transport loop around Manila Bay and better link Metro Manila to central Luzon and nearby Cavite, Laguna, Batangas, Rizal, and Quezon provinces. It dovetails with Mr. Marcos’s renewed decongestion policy by boosting economic activity in these areas, which together account for 60 percent of the country’s gross domestic product.

“This project will transform the economic landscape of central Luzon, unlock the full potential of Bataan and Cavite for trade, manufacturing, and industrial output, and boost their tourism,” said ADB vice president for East and Southeast Asia, and the Pacific Scott Morris.

“Once completed, BCIB will offer a platform for reimagining a more vibrant, resilient, and dynamic greater Manila Bay area.” Such infrastructure projects that decongest traffic in the urban capital and create new economic opportunities are always welcome.

UK supermarket chain Tesco rings up soaring profit

LONDON, United Kingdom—Supermarket group Tesco, Britain’s biggest retailer, reported Wednesday that its annual net profit surged 61 percent as easing UK inflation helped cost-conscious shoppers buy more products.

Profit after tax rallied to £1.2 billion ($1.5 billion) in the 12 months to February, Tesco said in a statement, while sales increased 4.4 percent to £68.2 billion.

The retail giant’s tills were boosted by an easing in Britain’s cost-of-living crisis, though consumers remained wary after the economy entered recession in the second half of 2023. “Customers are choosing to shop more at Tesco, which is reflected in growing market share as they respond

Butuan firm gets approval to export coconut oil to US

THE US Food and Drug Administration (USFDA) approved the registration of Butuan Coconut Products Inc. (BCPI) led by Mina Montilla-Ladlad, paving the way for the local company to export virgin coconut oil (VCO) to the American market.

The USFDA registration signifies BCPI’s unwavering commitment to upholding the highest standards in quality and food safety for its VCO.

VCO, known for its potential health benefits such as improved digestion and increased energy levels, is a popular choice for health-conscious consumers.

A clinical study conducted in 2020 showed that VCO has been found effective in the rapid relief of COVID-19 symptoms and normalization of the C-reactive protein (CRP) concentration among probable and suspected cases of COVID-19 (AngelesAgdeppa, 2024).

The study further suggests that VCO can be an effective adjunct therapy or supplement for COVID19-positive patients showing mild-tomoderate symptoms.

Ladlad expressed gratitude to the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) for its assistance. “Their assistance has been incredible. It’s always been DTI Agusan del Norte, DTI Caraga and the DTI Head Office who have helped us and continue to do so,” she said.

to the improvements we’ve made to the value and quality of our products,” chief executive Ken Murphy said. “Inflationary pressures have lessened substantially, however we are conscious that things are still difficult for many customers, so we have worked hard to reduce prices,” he added. “We have strong momentum in our business, and are encouraged by signs of improving consumer sentiment.” Tesco’s growth was also supported by its strategy of cutting prices on about 4,000 products as inflation slowed but remained evident.

The retailer offers to match prices of similar goods sold by UK supermarkets run by the German discount-

ers Aldi and Lidl.

“The impact of inflation was evident across all markets, although reduced gradually across the year as many global commodity prices fell and we passed savings on to customers by cutting prices across everyday grocery lines,” Tesco said.

The UK’s inflation rate has tumbled since striking a 41-year peak of 11.1 percent in October 2022, following a series of aggressive interest rate increases by the Bank of England.

Inflation slowed more sharply than expected in February to stand at 3.4 percent, the lowest level since September 2021, as growth in food prices eased further. AFP

THE National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) called on businesses to invest in the provinces to help alleviate traffic congestion in Metro Manila.

“We support the development of neighboring provinces like Bulacan, Cavite, Laguna, and Batangas, as well as regional centers such as Clark and Pampanga, Laoag, Metro Cebu, Metro Davao, Cagayan de Oro, Iloilo, Bacolod, General Santos City, and others,” said NEDA Secretary Arsenio Balisacan. Balisacan said proper urban planning is crucial to resolving Metro Manila’s traffic woes. “The rapid growth of our economy has led to a significant increase in the number of people traveling for work, running businesses, and even for leisure and tourism. This has caused traffic congestion,” Balisacan said. “We need to consider our entire transportation system and infrastructure, along with the development of our industries, commercial centers, and even residential areas.” President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., along with NEDA and other government agencies, crafted the Philippine Development Plan 2023-2028 to outline a comprehensive strategy addressing these issues.

“We are expediting the construction of mass-transit infrastructure, such as subways, railways, expressways, and bridges, in Metro Manila and neighboring areas to meet the needs of our economy and citizens,” Balisacan said.

“Proper planning is essential to guide infrastructure development and ensure effective adherence and implementation of these plans,” he said. “Furthermore, we must ensure progress and opportunities are felt not only in NCR but also in our provinces.”

NEDA also cited the need to expand the reach and improve the quality of public services.

“Residents in the provinces should have access to quality services so they don’t have to travel to Manila for schooling, medical treatment, or to obtain documents from government offices,” Balisacan said.

The strategy also includes strengthening digital connectivity. “The internet has provided opportunities for additional livelihoods and has assisted businesses in selling their products regardless of location,” he said.

Game developers seek gov’t support to develop industry, attract investors

THE Game Developers Association of the Philippines (GDA) is seeking the government’s support to develop the local industry and attract investors.

GDAP representatives led by James Lo recently paid a courtesy visit to National Economic and Development Authority (NEDA) Secretary Arsenio Balisacan to express their desire to collaborate more with various government agencies to elevate the Philippine game development industry.

They also shared the challenges that the emerging industry is facing such as the difficulties in connecting with investors and other industries that are needed to develop games and the general lack of support for the gaming industry.

Balisacan said the National Innovation Agenda and Strategy Document (NIASD) for 2023-2032 is a potential avenue of collaboration with GDAP.

The NIASD seeks to establish a dynamic innovation ecosystem which is characterized – among other things – by platforms that connect different innovation actors to each other and a government that enables and encourages innovation that is driven by the private sector.

China ‘highly concerned’ over EU probe into wind turbine suppliers

BEIJING, China—China said Wednesday it was “highly concerned” over a European Union probe into wind turbine suppliers, the latest move by Brussels targeting Beijing over green tech subsidies suspected of undermining fair competition.

“I think the outside world is concerned about the rising protectionist tendencies of the European Union, and China is highly concerned about the discriminatory measures taken by the European side against Chinese enterprises and even industries,” foreign ministry spokeswoman Mao Ning said.

The EU is seeking to massively ramp up renewable energy as it aims for net-zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050 while moving away from excessive reliance on cheaper

Chinese technology. The bloc’s competition chief, Margrethe Vestager, announced the inquiry into Chinese wind turbine suppliers during a speech Tuesday at Princeton University in the US state of New Jersey. “We are investigating the conditions for the development of wind parks in Spain, Greece, France, Romania and Bulgaria,” she said. The wind turbine probe follows earlier investigations targeting Chinese subsidies for solar panels, electric cars and trains, as trade tensions heat up with Beijing. It was launched under new rules that came into force last year and seek to prevent foreign subsidies from undermining fair competition in the EU. AFP

El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua together received almost $42 billion in family remittances in 2023, according to official data from central banks and the intergovernmental Central American Monetary Council. The remittances even exceed the amounts generated by foreign investment, tourism or exports.

They are a key factor in boosting trade and consumer spending in na-

tions with high poverty rates, according to experts.

Remittances to the four countries increased from $19.0 billion in 2017 to $41.8 billion in 2023 -- a rise that experts attribute to greater migration, in particular to the United States.

The exact number of Central Americans living abroad is unknown, since many are irregular migrants.

But according to estimates by international and non-governmental organizations, the figure is around 10 million, or a quarter of the combined population of El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and Nicaragua, where most migrants hail from. AFP

President Grand Palace more than Binondo culinary hub

A RETURN to President Grand Palace Restaurant in Binondo after nearly a decade felt like a nostalgic homecoming. Stepping inside, the familiar aroma of Chinese spices wafted through the air. But what truly struck me was the subtle yet impressive new decor. The minimalist design breathed new life into the space while retaining the essence of its heritage.

The stage at the back, unchanged from previous visits, stood as a testament to the restaurant’s versatility. It served as a playground, a platform for community events, and even a stage for Chinese opera. President Grand Palace Restaurant has always been more than just a place to eat; it’s a cultural hub where memories are made and traditions are upheld.

Despite its stature as a premier dining destination on Ongpin Street, President Grand Palace remains refreshingly affordable. With most dishes priced between 400 and 500 pesos, it strikes a balance between quality and affordability, catering to a diverse clientele.

Local associations and families alike find President Grand Palace a convenient venue for meetings, events, and celebrations. Its spacious halls and welcoming ambiance provide the perfect backdrop for gatherings of all kinds, fostering a sense of community within Binondo’s bustling streets.

As I scanned the menu, old favorites beckoned, reminding me of cherished meals shared with loved ones. Their extensive menu boasts a wide selection of culinary delights, from shark fin, bird’s nest, and abalone to pigeon, crab and prawn dishes. Diners can also choose from various scallop and oyster preparations, along with an assortment of fish, soups, duck, chicken and vegetable options.

The Chinese Embassy donated funds to the Philippine Chinese Charitable Association Inc. to renovate and maintain the Manila Chinese Cemetery and Memorial Hall.

THE newly-formed Phil-China People’s Friendship and Communication Association Inc. inducted its officers on March 30 at Century Park Hotel, Manila. Representatives from the Philippine government and FilipinoChinese community attended the ceremony. Founding chairperson Huang Yinghong explained the purpose and motivation for establishing the association.

“Every member of the Filipino-Chinese community is deeply invested in the future of the relationship between the Philippines and China. We aspire to play a meaningful role in enhancing the bonds of friendship between the two nations,” said Hong.

She expressed her gratitude to all those who supported the event.

Larry Gadon, presidential adviser for poverty alleviation, was the guest speaker during the event.

Chinese General Hospital holds TAVR on 84-year-old woman

THE structural heart team at the Heart Institute (HI) of the Chinese General Hospital and Medical Center (CHMC) led by Dr. Timothy Dy successfully performed the country’s first transcatheter aortic calve replacement (TAVR) utilizing the Edwards SAPIEN transcatheter heart valve (THV).

The Edwards SAPIEN Valve is a pioneering TAVR therapy to receive the Food and Drug Administration approval in the United States.

Only specialized hospitals offer the procedure, catering to eligible inoperable and high-risk patients.

According to CGHMC, the achievement represents a notable advancement in cardiac care in the Philippines and its ongoing commitment to innovation and excellence in cardiac care to provide the highest quality of service for its patients. The team comprised of Dr. Dy, Dr. Jessielyn Sia, Dr. Nelson Lee, Dr. Aristides Panlilio and Dr. Theresa Menor. Dr. Mao-shin Lin, an experienced TAVR implanter from Taiwan, was also present. CGHMC is among the early adopters commencing TAVR procedures as early as 2012 and has since completed nearly 300 cases utilizing various valves.

The inaugural recipient of the Edwards SAPIEN Valve was an 84-yearold woman afflicted with severe aortic stenosis.

TAVR, being minimally invasive, utilizes smaller access points compared to traditional open-heart valve surgery, making it a viable option for patients unable to undergo such procedures to replace the aortic valve.

TAVR has shown efficacy in alleviating symptoms like chest pain and shortness of breath associated with aortic valve stenosis, often resulting in shorter hospital stays compared to surgical aortic valve replacement (SAVR).

“This latest achievement adds to a series of pioneering endeavors by the CGHMC HI over the past decade. Notably, the institute accomplished the country’s first successful MitraClip Transcatheter Edge-to-Edge Repair (TEER) in 2014 and the first Watchman Left Atrial Appendage Occlusion (LAAO) implantation in 2016. These breakthroughs complement the institute’s groundbreaking work in Endovascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) and Thoracic Endovascular Aortic Repair (TEVAR), initiated in 2000,” CGHMC said.Julie Ann Lope

Though the world has moved on from the pandemic, Denin’s new song tackles a topic that can still sting: moving on from an ex. “Wag Mo Na Siyang Balikan” is a song co-written with his friend Kenneth Abawag. The composition is deeply personal for both of them, drawing inspiration from their own experiences and the “EXpecially for You” segment on It’s Showtime. Performing the song live, Denin caught the ear of OPM hitmaker Tim Dionela, who offered to produce it after being impressed.

The song delves into the complexities of navigating a relationship threatened by a former lover’s return. It captures the struggle of wanting to hold onto someone while ultimately choosing to demonstrate love through the difficult act of letting go. It’s a bittersweet message of conflicted emotions and the vulnerability that comes with loving someone enough to give them freedom.

Inspired by true events, the music video features rising social media influencers Yuan Guinto and Vladia Disuanco, also known as Kyosu and Jaja “Both the song and video were recently released,” Denin says. “I hope people check out this tribute song for the heartbroken.”

“Wag Mo Na Siyang Balikan” is now available on all streaming platforms.

How parents can foster speech skills in children with autism

IN HONOR of World Autism Day on April 2, Mylo Speech Buddy, a groundbreaking speech development system, was launched to empower families with children experiencing speech delays and Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD).

The innovative app aims to empower parents by helping nonverbal children develop their very first words. Mylo Speech Buddy utilizes video modeling to teach speech and offers clear pronunciation guidance for parents. This allows parents to actively participate in their child’s speech development journey from the comfort of their own homes.

The app was meticulously designed in collaboration with speechlanguage pathologists,

Mylo Speech Buddy President and CEO Vincent Rocha shared how the Mylo Speech Buddy app was inspired by his son Noah who was diagnosed with autism

Kiko Estrada, Miles Ocampo trend with unexpected pairing in ‘Eat Bulaga’

MILES Ocampo and Kiko Estrada have been setting tongues wagging online with their undeniable on-screen chemistry. The unexpected pairing first sparked during the latter’s guest appearance in the noontime variety show Eat Bulaga

Kiko appeared as a celebrity player on the segment “Peraphy,” promoting the TV adaptation of Rudy Fernandez’s 1986 film, Lumuhod Ka Sa Lupa . The playful banter began when Miles’ co-host, Maine Mendoza, noticed Miles blushing while interviewing Kiko.

Teka lang. Parang namumula ka ?” (Hold on. Are you blushing?) Maine said, prompting their co-hosts to tease Miles and Kiko.

Miles responded with, “I’m a serious person,” while Allan K asked the intriguing question, “So, are you single?”

Kiko’s playful reply, “It’s for me to know, and for you to find out,” was mirrored by Miles’ response to Allan K, “It’s for you to find out, Ma’am [Allan K].”

The flirting continued when Kiko serenaded Miles with “All My Life.” Vic Sotto then playfully urged Miles to return the favor, and she sang Gloc-9’s hit song, “Sirena.”

The spark seemingly continued beyond the initial appearance. On Monday, April 8, Kiko surprised Miles with flowers when he accompanied his co-star, Sarah Lahbati , who was a celebrity player that day. While Sarah played, cameras captured Miles and Kiko enjoying a casual conversation on the side. It’s worth noting that Miles’ last public relationship was with Senior High star Elijah Canlas . In 2022, Miss World Philippines 2021 2nd Princess Janelle Lewis confirmed she was dating Kiko. This online buzz comes amidst their current relationship statuses, making fans wonder if there’s more to their undeniable chemistry.

occupational therapists, and medical professionals, ensuring it effectively addresses the unique needs of individuals on the autism spectrum.

The Mylo team itself is comprised of parents with firsthand experience raising children with ASD, along with specialists in creating content for preschool and special education.

“Mylo Speech Buddy is a powerful platform that enables parents to actively support their child’s speech development right at home. It enhances and works alongside the valuable contributions of speech therapists and medical professionals, adding to a holistic approach to speech development rather than substituting professional care,” said Mylo Speech Buddy President and CEO Vincent Rocha Rocha, inspired by his son Noah ’s diagnosis at age two, emphasizes the app’s dedication to the autism community.

“As a parent of a child with autism, I draw inspiration from the challenges my son, Noah, faced when diagnosed at the age of two. Our mission is to bolster individuals with autism in developing verbal abilities and to foster genuine support within the community,” he added.

ASD, commonly known as autism, is a global condition affecting approximately 1 percent or 75 million individuals worldwide. In the Philippines alone, over 1.2 million cases of ASD are reported, with one in 100 children diagnosed. This highlights the scarcity of affordable and accessible speech and occupational therapy services for Filipino families.

Mylo Speech Buddy emphasizes the importance of early intervention for improving learning, communication, and social skills, and even influencing positive changes in brain development.

Mylo Speech Buddy also launched a series of social media videos titled Ausome Stories , to showcase the daily lives, challenges, triumphs, and experiences of 10 real families with members on the autism spectrum. They aim to combat stereotypes and societal judgments often faced by the autism community.

Ausome Stories allows us to share the diverse experiences of individuals with autism, celebrating their strengths and achievements,” said Rocha, underlining the power of storytelling in fostering empathy and understanding.

On the other hand, co-founder Enrico Aquino emphasized the significance of supporting these communities.

“The launch of Mylo Speech Buddy represents a significant milestone in raising awareness, understanding, and supporting individuals with autism, particularly as the world observes World Autism Awareness Day,” he stated. By harnessing technology and compassion, Mylo Speech Buddy aspires to pave the way for a brighter future, serving as a collaborative partner in therapy and support for children with autism.

AWARD-WINNING singersongwriter Billie Eilish has finally revealed the title of her highly anticipated third album: Hit Me Hard . In a post on her official Instagram account, Eilish shared the album cover featuring her submerged underwater with a white door open above. “So crazy to be writing this right now i’m nervyyyyy & exciteddd,” she wrote, expressing her anticipation for the release. Billie Eilish won’t drop any singles ahead of new album release ‘Joker’ pairs up with Gaga as sequel hype hits CinemaCon

WARNER Bros. offered a glimpse of its eagerly anticipated Joker sequel at CinemaCon on Tuesday, as the Hollywood studio set out plans to build on the success of last year’s blockbuster Barbie

Warner’s presentation at the Las Vegas movie summit also featured footage from a long-awaited follow-up to 1980s classic Beetlejuice, plus Robert Pattinson promoting a new sci-fi from Parasite director Bong Joon-ho

But the focus was on Joker: Folie A Deux, Todd Phillips’ sequel to a controversial original that won an Oscar for its star Joaquin Phoenix, and reinvented what is possible for superhero adaptations.

The 2019 Joker offered a dark, R-rated origin story for Batman’s future nemesis Arthur Fleck, and polarized audiences by presenting its murderous villain as a hero, even prompting fears it could inspire mass shootings.

Rumors have swirled around the sequel – out in October – which adds Lady Gaga, one of the world’s biggest pop music stars, to its cast, and has been

described as a musical. Introducing a new trailer for the film, Phillips called his latest work “a movie where music is an essential element,” adding that it “doesn’t really veer too far from the first film” in that sense. “Arthur is weird and aloof and distant, all these things, but he has music in him, he has a grace to him,” explained Phillips. That informed a lot of the dancing in the first film... so it didn’t seem like that big of a step, what we did here. It’s different but I think it’ll make sense once you see it,” he said. The trailer showed Phoenix’s Joker

Hit Me Hard And Soft. “Not doing singles,” she declared. “I wanna give it to you all at once.”

Both Eilish and her brother, singersongwriter Finneas O’Connell, expressed their pride in the album and excitement for fans to hear it. Finneas also shared the album cover on his Instagram, adding, “I love this album so much, so grateful I got to make this with Billie, so glad it’s about to be yours.”

Eilish further engaged with fans by resharing their enthusiastic stories about the album. She even shared a playful video of herself in a hazmat suit, laying out CDs and splattering them with orange paint. These limited-edition CDs are available for preorder through a link.

Coinciding with the announcement of

Hit Me Hard And Soft, Eilish’s website’s homepage now features a dedicated sustainability tab. This tab offers a transparent breakdown of the album’s eco-friendly features, from vinyl and CDs to merchandise.

Hit Me Hard And Soft is set to be released on May 17.

Inclusive approach to beauty and self-care

ROYAL Aesthetics, a thriving medical aesthetics business co-founded by Arlene Cris Damot, Mrs. Universe Philippines 2023, and her husband David Jayabalan, is witnessing a fascinating shift in their clientele: more men seeking cosmetic procedures.

While women continue to be their primary clientele, Arlene and David enthusiastically welcome this trend, seeing it as a positive step towards making self-care and aesthetic enhancement inclusive and commonplace across all genders.

Arlene shares, “We’ve noticed a growing interest from men in our services. We need to break down traditional barriers. Self-care and personal improvement should be embraced by everyone, regardless of gender.”

WATSONS, the leading health, wellness, and beauty retailer, is actively supporting the Department of Health (DOH) in its efforts to combat the rising cases of Pertussis, also known as whooping cough.

As the disease spreads in specific regions across the Philippines, Watsons is contributing to the initiative by offering Pertussis vaccines to walk-in customers at selected stores. Vaccines are offered on a first-come-first-served basis, and stocks are limited only. This initiative aims to curb the spread of the disease.

“We are taking a proactive stance in supporting our local government’s efforts to combat the rising cases of Pertussis and curb its spread through our vaccination initiative. Vaccines will be available for walk-ins in select Watsons stores, ensuring accessibility and convenience for our customers,” says Jared De Guzman, Watsons Philippines Customer Director. “ Watsons can administer vaccines to individuals aged 18 years old and above. However, senior citizens, persons with disabilities (PWD), and pregnant women are advised to obtain a doctor’s approval before

vaccination. For individuals aged 17 years old and below, vaccines cannot be administered in-store. Watsons recommends consulting a pediatrician for proper assessment.

During this outbreak period, Watsons has demonstrated leadership in healthcare retail by introducing the Pertussis vaccine, exemplifying its strong commitment to public health and safety.

Additionally, Watsons stores offer a variety of essential vaccinations at competitive prices to ensure accessibility for all individuals. These vaccinations include the Flu vaccine priced at P850, Pneumonia vaccines like Prevnar 23 for P2,370 and Prevnar 13 for P3,860, the HPV 4 vaccine for P3,750, and the Shingles vaccine for P8,300. By providing these critical vaccinations at affordable rates, Watsons is dedicated to promoting community health and well-being during this challenging outbreak period.

With a steadfast commitment to accessible healthcare solutions, Watsons ensures that vital vaccinations are affordable and available, promoting the well-being of communities across the nation.

This approach, Arlene believes, is their key to success. Not only are they open to new trends, they also make their services inclusive. Additionally, their success goes beyond just offering high-quality procedures. Royal Aesthetics prioritizes affordability without compromising quality, making self-care a realistic option for a wider audience.

Arlene emphasizes authenticity as key: “We build connections with our clients, making them feel understood throughout their journey. Every connection matters.”

Arlene, a registered nurse and certified aesthetics professional, champions self-care. “Prioritize your physical and mental wellbeing,” she advises. “Take breaks, and find a support system that encourages you.”

Royal Aesthetics started in 2018 with a single Parañaque clinic offering basic treatments like facials and nails. They’ve since expanded to six branches, with plans for “lunchtime” procedures requiring minimal downtime.

Their dedication to excellence was recently recognized with two Galderma Aesthetics Diamond Awards: the Blue Diamond Excellence Award and the Breakthrough Award. Initially focusing on basic services, Royal Aesthetics, under Arlene’s guidance, recognized the demand for more advanced treatments.

“People craved more options,” says Arlene. “My background allowed us to offer those solutions.”

Very Wang Nickie Wang

Their personalized approach and commitment to quality led to a surge in popularity, particularly for non-surgical procedures like threads, Botox, and fillers.

Today, Royal Aesthetics boasts six strategically located branches across the Philippines, mostly in shopping malls for client convenience.

“We want to be where our clients are,” explains David, who manages the business side.

Royal Aesthetics is planning a dedicated surgical center, further expanding their services to cater to diverse aesthetic goals. Visit royalaesthetics.ph for more information.

WITH summer finally here, heading to the beach is a nobrainer. After all, nothing says ‘it’s summertime’ quite like surfing, a quick dip in the ocean, or even just lounging around on the sand. And guess what, all these activities can improve your mental health too.

“Everything from just being near a body of water to being out in the sun carries noticeable mental health benefits. When you put them together, the holistic experience uplifts your mood, reduces stress, and promotes mental clarity,” explains Jon Edward B. Jurilla, MD, Chief of the Section of Psychiatry of the top hospital in the Philippines, Makati Medical Center (MakatiMed). “Anyone that’s been to the beach and left feeling better knows this is true, even if they can’t exactly explain why,” he adds.

So how do you maximize your next beach trip for better mental health? Dr. Jurilla recommends starting by simply taking time to soak in the sun.

“Vitamin D from the sun increases serotonin levels,

a neurotransmitter in mood functioning. More serotonin means a better overall mood, reduced anxiety, and even better sleep,” says Dr. Jurilla. “It is why Vitamin D deficiency is linked to depression.” Numerous studies have found that being in or near water is a game-changer for well-being.

“Water has an inherent calming effect which is why gazing at the ocean alters the frequency of our brain waves, inducing a gentle meditative state. The sound of water is also much more calming compared to typical urban noise, allowing your mind and body to relax even further,” shares Dr. Jurilla.

Dr. Jurilla adds that being around water also encourages physical activity. “If you’re near water, you might be encouraged to start swimming, floating, or diving. All of these are good exercises for your entire body, improving your physical health that’s also closely tied to your mental health.” Once outside the water, it’s also worth simply walking around on the sand. Even a leisurely stroll along the shoreline is enough exercise

to release endorphins, known as the feel-good hormones. “These endorphins work to alleviate stress, promoting a sense of calmness and happiness,” says Dr. Jurilla. Even just breathing in the beach’s fresh air goes a long way. Beach air is generally cleaner and fresher, with higher levels of oxygen, which carries benefits such as better sleep. “Research has found that the smell of beach air is soothing because it carries negative ions,” adds Dr. Jurilla. “These negative ions help your body absorb more oxygen. More oxygen means improved serotonin levels, adding to the mental health benefits you already get from being in the sun.”

A quick beach trip is a great reminder of what connecting with nature can do for our mental health. “As if you needed any more reason to go to the beach, at least do it as a favor to your mental health,” suggests Dr. Jurilla. For more information, please contact
