The massive landslide buried a bus terminal and 55 houses near an Apex Mining Co. gold mine on Tuesday night, killing 28 people, mostly miners, and leaving 32 injured, according to an updated official tally.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage from the

magnitude 5.8 quake that shook the Mindanao region at 11:22 a.m., but rescuers were ordered to stop their search for at least 77 people believed buried under the rubble spread over 8.9 hectares in the remote gold-mining village of Masara.

"We ordered them (rescuers) to

nearby provinces including Agusan del Sur, Bohol, Bukidnon, Camiguin, Cotabato, Davao de Oro, Davao del Sur, Misamis Oriental, Lanao del Sur, South Cotabato, and Surigao del Sur. At 1:21 p.m. Saturday, the seismic agency also recorded a 5.2-magnitude tremor located about three kilometers southeast of Esperanza, Agusan del Sur at a depth of 45 kilometers.

PH, US HOLD 3RD JOINT MARITIME AND AIR PATROL IN WEST PH SEA THE United States and the Philippines held their third joint sea and air patrol in three months in the West Philippine Sea on Friday, the allies said.

The latest sea and air patrols came as Washington seeks to strengthen its defense ties in the region in the face of an increasingly assertive China.

The sea and air patrols involved the US combat ship USS Gabrielle Giffords and an MH-60S SeaHawk helicopter, along with the Philippine Navy's BRP Gregorio del Pilar warship and an AW109 helicopter.

The Philippine military said the patrol was held in its exclusive economic zone but did not provide an exact location.

MINDANAO SECESSION TO HAVE SOCIAL COSTS—NEDA

By Charles Dantes and Maricel Cruz THE National Economic Development and Authority warned an independent Mindanao republic would have “social costs” on top of the economic implications of such a secession push.

“More than the economic cost it’s the social cost," NEDA Undersecretary Rosemarie Edillon said in a news forum yesterday.

"The cost of doing business will also increase if they separate. So there are those kinds of considerations,” she said.

On Thursday, President Marcos said the call to separate Mindanao from the rest of the country was "doomed to fail, for it is anchored on false premises not to mention a sheer constitutional travesty."

“I strongly appeal to all concerned to stop this call for a separate Mindanao. This is a grave violation of the constitution,” the President said in his speech to mark Constitution Day. Edillon acknowledged that while Mindanao has contributed 16 percent to the country's gross domestic product and over 30 percent to the agricultural sector, the region needs technical assistance and development planning as it is home to some of the poorest areas in the country.

"There was neglect in the past. I think that has to be recognized as well. That's one of the things we're trying to catch up on – the long period of neglect in Mindanao. They were left behind and it shows in the poverty statistics,” she said.

Former President Rodrigo Duterte floated the idea to separate Mindanao from the Philippines through a signature-based process following his opposition to amending the 1987 Charter.

Duterte insisted there was nothing illegal with his proposal as secession does not mean going to war. "[My proposal] is a legal process that will be brought to the United Nations [similar to that of] Timor Leste," Duterte said.

IN BRIEF Customs urges Bugatti owner to surrender THE Bureau of Customs (BOC) on Saturday issued a stern warning against the registered owner of the smuggled blue Bugatti Chiron hypersports car.

Customs Commissioner Bien Rubio vowed to find a certain Thu Thrang Nguyen, the registered owner of the blue sports car with plate number NIM 5448.

“Surrender, or you will face the consequences. We already have the information on the location of the car, but we are still verifying this. But for the owner, it would be better for him to surrender, similar to what the owner of the red Bugatti did yesterday,” he said.

The red sports car with plate number NIM 5450 and registered to Menguin Zhu was surrendered to the agency’s Customs Intelligence and Investigation Service-Manila International Container Port (CIIS-MICP) on Friday, Feb. 9, in a house in Ayala Alabang Village in Muntinlupa City.

HE Anti-Red Tape Authority (ARTA) vowed to suppress “red tape” within various agencies following President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s order to streamline the ease of doing business in the government.

ARTA Secretary Ernesto Perez echoed the President’s sentiments to put a stop to red tape activities during a Saturday news forum in Quezon City.

“So, we quote of course our presi-

dent when he said that recently that in whatever government offices, red tape must be replaced with red carpet,” Perez said.

“This is to highlight the importance of attracting investors

and encouraging existing investors to expand because to have an enabling business environment we have to lay the groundwork to convince business people that in the Philippines we have the Ease-ofDoing Business,” he added.

Perez explained the streamlining of the business processes in the country would be the best answer to halt red tape activities in the government.

“The best way really to battle red tape is this way, hindi na po kailangan ang fixer, hindi na po kailangan ang padrino, kilala sa agency,” Perez stressed.

REP. Ray T. Reyes of AnaKalusugan party-list on Saturday asked the government to prioritize ramping up its efforts to provide accessible healthcare to the public.

Reyes made the statement in reaction to a recent survey by the OCTA Research group which showed that staying healthy remains the most urgent personal concern for a majority of Filipinos.

“It is no surprise that health remains the top priority of our kababayans. We in government should waste no time in working to ease this growing concern,” Reyes said.

“Fine-tuning and implementing necessary improvements to the Universal Healthcare (UHC) Act should be a priority to provide our kababayans with greater access to high-quality health services and treatments,” he added. Maricel V. Cruz

CANADA has approved a total of CAD28.15 million or approximately P1.1 billion in development assistance to support the Philippines’ health care, disaster resilience, and climate adaptation efforts, the Canadian Embassy in Manila announced Saturday.

The funding includes a new CAD12.5 million commitment for disaster resilience on top of the CAD15 million that Canadian Development Minister Ahmed Hussen announced when he visited the Philippines in January.

An additional CAD650,000 was set aside for the monitoring and evaluation covering all three initiatives, bringing the total to CAD28.15 million.

Unioil Petroleum Philippines said in its advisory that gasoline should go down by P0.60 to P0.80 per liter while diesel should go down by P0.20 to P0.30 per liter.

Industry sources on Friday estimated the price rollback at P1 to P1.20 per liter for gasoline and P0.40 to P0.60 per liter for diesel based on the four-day trading of the Mean of Platts Singapore, the benchmark pricing used by oil importers.

WESCOM BARES PLAN TO BEEF UP SECURITY IN MALAMPAYA PLATFORM

UERTO PRINCESA, Palawan—The Western Command (Wescom) is beefing up security at the Malampaya natural gas platform located off the coast of this province to ensure its continued operation in case of any unforeseen threats.

In a press briefing Saturday, Vice Admiral Alberto Carlos, commander of Wescom, said securing the “energy crown jewel” is paramount, necessitating elevated security measures that include training the facility’s security personnel to collaborate with the military.

“In our pursuit of heightened security and preparedness, Wescom remains steadfast in its important role of safeguarding the energy

infrastructure crucial for our nation’s sustenance,” he said.

Carlos disclosed that a joint exercise between platform security personnel and Wescom troops is being organized to better prepare the Malampaya facility for future security challenges.

The joint exercise, called Gas Oil Platform Takedown and Recovery Training (GOPLAT), is scheduled in the second quarter of the year, he added.

On Thursday, Carlos visited the Malampaya offshore platform to assess existing security protocols and coordinate with on-site security personnel on the upcoming GOPLAT exercise.

The platform is located about 80 km. off the northwest coast of the Palawan mainland.

Carlos added that securing Malampaya is “of utmost significance” because it produces approximately 20 percent of the Philippines’daily electricity requirements.

He explained that Wescom, operating through the Joint Task Force Malampaya, performs a substantial role in ensuring the uninterrupted and secure operations of the vital facility through close collaboration with key security and production personnel from the

Malampaya Deepwater Gas-to-Power Project.

Meanwhile, the third iteration of the maritime cooperative activity between Philippine and US allied forces in the West Philippine Sea (WPS) came to an end on Friday.

Carlos noted that the Maritime Cooperative Activity was conducted without any issues arising in contested waters during the war games.

He noted that the latest exercise reaffirmed the shared commitment of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the United States Indo-Pacific Command to bolster security and stability across the Indo-Pacific Region, while also showcasing their enduring friendship.

PROPOSED P100 WAGE HIKE MAY CREATE DIFFICULTIES–LAGUESMA THE proposed P100 minimum wage hike in the private sector might “create difficulties” for businesses, Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Secretary Bienvenido Laguesma said.

Citing data from the National Wages and Productivity Commission (NWPC), Laguesma said the proposed wage hike will result in an additional 15 to 25 percent increase in each employee’s salary, excluding wage-related benefits, Laguesma said in an interview on Dobol B TV, further said: “It’s somewhat sizable.

A TOTAL of 9,746 high school students received educational assistance during the four-day distribution of the Taguig Learners’Certificate (TLC) Scholarship allowance.

The TLC scholars received an allowance of P10,000 each to cover their miscellaneous fees and other school fees.

This is apart from the tuition fee subsidy of up to P18,000 shouldered by the City of Taguig for elementary school graduates who want to continue their studies at partner private high schools.

A pioneering project of Cayetano, the TLC scholarship program now has 56 TLC partner schools in the city.

The city chief executive emphasized the importance of students demonstrating values such as intelligence, kindness, and respect, encouraging them to be role models in their communities.

Grade 7 student Joshua Bibit from HSL Braille College expressed gratitude for the support, stating that it eased the financial burden on his family.

THE Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines (CAAP) on Saturday dispatched a team to investigate the case of an aircraft that crash-landed in Malolos, Bulacan The agency received a report from the Plaridel Tower regarding a crashlanded Cessna C152 type aircraft operated by Fliteline Aviation in a ricefield in Malolos, Bulacan around 2:15 pm.

According to the initial report, the aircraft with registry number RP-C2673

was on a touch-go training flight with a route from Plaridel to Subic and back to Plaridel. It performed an emergency landing procedure due to an engine failure southwest of North Luzon Expressway.

The pilot and student pilot on board survived the emergency landing and were reported safe.

The Operations Center and the Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Center of CAAP have been alerted to the incident, and the Aircraft Accident Investigation and Inquiry Board has been dispatched to the crash site to investigate.

THE Caloocan City government passed the 2023 Good Financial Housekeeping (GFH) audit by the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) for its outstanding and consistent compliance with national standards for government fiscal accounting.

Witnesses reported new strikes on Rafah early Saturday, after the Israeli military intensified air raids, with fears rising among Palestinians of a coming ground invasion.

“We don’t know where to go,” said Mohammad alJarrah, a Palestinian who was displaced from further north to Rafah.

The city is the last major population center in the Gaza Strip that Israeli troops have yet to enter and also the main point of entry for desperately needed relief supplies.

Netanyahu told military officials on Friday to “submit to the cabinet a combined plan for evacuating the population and destroying the battalions” of Hamas militants holed up in Rafah, his office said.

The US State Department said it does not support a ground offensive in Rafah, warning that, if not properly planned, such an operation risks “disaster.”

The United States is Israel’s main international backer, providing itwith billions of dollars in military aid.

But in a sign of growing frustration, US President Joe Biden issued his strongest criticism of Israel yet, describing the retaliation for Hamas’s Oct. 7 attack as going too far.

“I’m of the view, as you know, that the conduct of

the response in Gaza, in the Gaza Strip, has been over the top,” the US president said.

“There are a lot of innocent people who are starving... in trouble and dying, and it’s got to stop.”

Displaced Palestinians have flooded into Rafah, where hundreds of thousands are sleeping in tents pushed up against the Egyptian border.

AFP images showed scenes of devastation, with people queuing for increasingly scarce water.

Rights groups have sounded alarm at the prospect of a ground incursion.

“Israel’s declared ground offensive on Rafah would be catastrophic andmust not proceed,” Doctors Without Borders said in a statement.“There is no place that is safe in Gaza and no way for people to leave.”

The Hamas-run territory’s health ministry on Saturday said that at least 110 people were killed in overnight bombardment, including 25 in strikes in Rafah.

RUSSIAN DRONE ATTACK KILLS 7 IN UKRAINE CITY SEVEN people, including three children, were killed Saturday in a Russian drone attack on a petrol station in the city of Kharkiv in eastern Ukraine, the regional governor said.

“Unfortunately the death toll from the occupiers’ attacks on Kharkiv has risen to seven,” Oleg Synegubov said on the Telegram social network.

“Among them are three children: 7, 4 years old and a baby about six months old.”

The attack sprayed nearby homes with burning fuel forcing at least 50 people to evacuate, Kharkiv mayor Igor Terekhov said earlier.

“The enemy’s Shaheds (Iranian-made drones) hit a petrol station, causing burning fuel to spill out and 14 private houses to burn,” he said, adding the fire was burning across a wide area.

Kharkiv regional prosecutor Oleksandr Filachkov said three drones hit Kharkiv’s Nemyshlyanskyi district.

“As a result, an object of critical infrastructure was destroyed.

There was a large amount of fuel, which is why the consequences of the fire were so terrible,” he said, referring to the petrol station.

TAIWAN DETECTS RECORD EIGHT CHINESE BALLOONS A RECORD eight Chinese balloons have been detected around Taiwan, with two directly flying over the island, Taipei’s defense ministry said Saturday.

The ministry said the balloons were spotted on Friday, the day before the start of the Lunar New Year holiday, at an altitude of 15,000 feet (4,572 meters) to 38,000 feet.

It was the highest number detected since the ministry started regularly releasing data on balloon sightings in December.

China claims democratic Taiwan as its own territory and has neverrenounced the use of force to bring the self-ruled island under its control.

Beijing has ramped up military pressure in recent years, and deploys warplanes and naval vessels around the island on a nearly daily basis.

In February last year, Taiwan’s military alerted aviation authorities after spotting a balloon floating in the island’s airspace but did not say where the balloon came from or provide a detailed location.

The latest balloon sightings came after Taiwan’s presidential election last month, which was won by the ruling Democratic Progressive Party’s Lai Ching-te, who Beijing regards as a “separatist.” AFP

Nearly 100,000 people were expected to fill the capital Jakarta’s main stadium for a rally in support of frontrunner Prabowo Subianto, while more than 80,000 turned out for rival Anies Baswedan at another stadium in the megalopolis.

Third-time candidate Subianto, Indonesia’s defense minister and a former general, is leading rivals Baswedan and former Central Java governor Ganjar Pranowo by double-digits in polls ahead of Wednesday’s vote.

CAR-FREE EIFFEL TOWER ZONE FACES PUSHBACK REMOVING cars from an expanse around the Eiffel Tower to create a green pathway sounds pretty good on paper, but the mayor of Paris is struggling to win over residents and above all the police force to revamp one of the city’s most celebrated views.

Thousands of tourists jostle every day to snap the Eiffel Tower from across the River Seine on the hill at Trocadero, with its magnificent gardens and a modernist palace housing museums.

Walking to Trocadero is less romantic, however, requiring the crossing of two major intersections and the often trafficclogged Pont d’Iena bridge.

Mayor Anne Hidalgo said to general surprise this week that she wants to push ahead with a project to kick out the cars and create a continuous garden between the Eiffel Tower and the Trocadero

esplanade.

But while she hopes to take advantage of the 2024 Summer Olympics to begin the project as soon as the Games end, her critics—and most importantly the Paris police chief – are resisting the plan.

The proposal is in keeping with other efforts by the Socialist mayor to squeeze cars out of Paris and make the city greener, a push that has divided residents and political opponents who say her policies go too far.

A trio of Japanese tourists taking photos next to the busy Pont d’Iena bridge agreed that the plan would make a difference.

The view was “disappointing,” Mahiro told AFP, saying the vista would be“more beautiful with less cars.”

Hidalgo launched the project in 2019 but soon clashed with the city’s police

chief at the time, Didier Lallement, and right-wing mayors of three of the city’s districts over concerns about traffic disruptions.

But Hidalgo, who announced a similar plan in January to ban cars onhalf of the central Place de la Concorde, site of the iconic Luxor Obelisk, is hoping the fervour of the Olympics will garner support for the ambitious project.

“After the Olympic Games, there will no longer be cars passing in front of the Eiffel Tower,” Hidalgo said in an interview with the Ouest-France newspaper published on Tuesday.

ERIAL entrepreneur Jorge Wieneke was the first to democratize fine food into affordable everyday cravings.

The idea to serve affordable tempura came about af ter witnessing the long queue for the favorite Japanese dish in a buffet restaurant.

“It all started in 2012 when we opened 10 stores, but we closed half of it the following year.

Determined as I was to make this venture work, I stayed focus which is why we endured this long,” said the Tokyo Tempura owner and president.

R e a l i z i n g a cce s s to t h i s Japanese dish wasn’t cheap, he thought of a concept to serve affordable tempura to those who can’t simply just have it every day.

Wieneke had his fair share of entrepreneurial misfires that ultimately fueled his success with Tokyo Tempura. He admitted he had it worse before it got any better. He tried several business concepts but the odds were not in his favor.

But each failure further fueled his determination, shaping him into the seasoned entrepreneur he is today.

A crucial turning point came through partnership with mall giant SM. They recognized Wieneke’s potential and provided the space for his vision to thrive.

Working with mall operators helped him scale up his business.

His partnership with SM opened new areas of opportunities, growing his food cart concept to over a hundred branches.

OACH Tim Cone’s aspiration of keeping the members of the Gilas Pilipinas national men’s basketball team together for the next four years is a key focus as the team gears up for the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

Cone is aiming for continuity in the team, emphasizing the importance of maintaining the same system and roster to foster familiarity and enable players to reach their full potential.

“Any ideas for the next four years will be in keeping with the continuity of the team, getting and having the same system, having the same players, who will get to know each other better, till they reach their full potential,” said Cone.

Team Philippines will once again assemble for practices starting Feb. 15.

Gilas will first clash with Hong Kong on Feb. 22 at the Tsuen Wan Stadium and Chinese Taipei on Feb. 25 at the PhilSports Arena.

Cone was retained as Gilas head coach last week, following his successful stint in the Hangzhou Asian Games.

The 66-year-old Cone said the preparation time for any tournament will be shorter.

“We’re not gonna ask for a longer preparation time. We feel like each window

will prepare us for the next one,” added Cone.

The Philippines will also join the Olympic Qualifying Tournament from July 2 to 7 in Latvia.

Cone has chosen 12 core players for Gilas.

This includes Philippine Basketball Association players Scottie Thompson, Chris Newsome, Calvin Oftana, CJ Perez, Jamie Malonzo, and June Mar Fajardo.

There are Japanese B-League imports Dwight Ramos, AJ Edu, Carl Tamayo, and Kai Sotto.

Collegiate cager Kevin Quiambao of the La Salle Green Archers has also been added.

Notably, FIBA has cleared Justin Brownlee for the naturalized player spot, securing his eligibility for upcoming tournaments, a decision welcomed by the team.

LIFE LESSONS FROM A NATIONAL TREASURE (First of 9 parts)

By Peter R. Lopez THE King James Version (KJV), derived from the book of Galatians 6:7-9, reads: “Be not deceived; God is not mocked: for whatsoever a man soweth, that shall he also reap. For he that soweth to his flesh shall of the flesh reap corruption; but he that soweth to the Spirit shall of the Spirit reap life everlasting. And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season, we shall reap, if we faint not.”

And that could very well be, the life verse of all-time Philippine coaching great, Jose Layug Lipa, Jr. widely known in sporting circles as Coach Joe Lipa.

In the corporate setting where I came from, it was and is customary to address key executives in a corporate setting by their initials. It reinforces retention and easy identification.

As his biographer, mentor, and friend, I’ve come to address him as CJL, a term of endearment that reflects my respect for him.

Throughout CJL’s life, he only sowed seeds of unconditional love, which to many belied his gruff exterior.

What his heart beats for, is revealed through the writer’s ongoing journey of chronicling the memoirs of the last of the greatest amateur coaches in the land.

In one of my many meaningful conversations with the 80-year-old national treasure, he shared with me how he spends his day.

Like a devout Muslim, the faithful Christian prays three times a day. In the morning, noon, and night, he constantly strikes up loving conversations with our Creator covering topics about family, health, career, and the people whom he holds dear.

Then he goes about his tasks as a Team Consultant of PBA team, Terrafirma Dyip, keeping himself fit through exercise, and engaging with his tight circle frequently, in between his prayer life.

generation in this regard, who has a problem sticking to one. “Matanda na ako, Peter.” He tells me in his deep, husky baritone, of which I have acquired a good impression. To keep him out of a funk I would respond; “Alam ko po yun, CJL. Obvious naman po.”

Then we would laugh together to keep our convo light all throughout, so he would remember details of his great coaching past in the light of my constant probing.

AGAINST THE GREATS During his prime years, CJL was a misunderstood soul.

Pundits, peers, and critics alike drew notice of his fiery and intense demeanor on the bench, which were unheard of in the local basketball scene.

Casuals and jaded fans alike point to the cool-as-a-cucumber demeanor of Virgilio “Baby” Dalupan of Crispa-Floro fame, the fashion sense and savvy of Dante Silverio from the family-owned Toyota franchise, and Universal Textiles’

debonaire mentor Tommy Manotoc, the man who broke the Crispa-Toyota stranglehold in the PBA. They were collective images of who a basketball coach was, at the highest level of play.

Coming from such a perspective, CJL was an anti-thesis of the top-flight mentors in Philippine basketball.

Then in terms of technical knowledge, he unknowingly created a wide chasm between him and the next local coach by studying the bodies of work of those greats who went before him.

Names like coaches Nilo Verona and Carlos Badion, whom CJL constantly picked their brains and who were unselfish enough to mentor the 80s new kid on the block.

Then by the time, he helmed the UP Fighting Maroons, CJL did beyond dismal on his maiden year as head tactician with a win to show and seven blowouts, that soon after his second season, he bounced back big time with

a UAAP first runner-up finish.

Sensing his team was a step from being detached from a championship, CJL requested the UP Athletics Office for a trip to the US, to attend a coaching camp run by incoming 1984 USA Olympic coach, Bobby Knight of the University of Indiana Hoosiers.

Fortunately, Attorney Oscar G. Yabes was an MBA alum at Indianapolis, he wrote Coach Bobby Knight a note requesting for the part-time UP P.E. professor to be a part of his upcoming coaching summit that summer.

Funded by his generous Sigma Rho brethren, CJL set forth on a groundbreaking journey of a lifetime.

RICKY Organiza caught a struggling Southeast Asian Games medallist Arlan Arbois flatfooted when he finally reached the Vicente Roa St. finish line on a cool, rainy morning in Cagayan de Oro City.

The 21-year-old Organiza ran his second men’s 21-kilometer run since December, and he did a good time when he was done competing in the Cagayan de Oro leg of the 2024 7-Eleven Run series recently.

“Kabisado ko ang ruta. Ito na po ang personal best ko,”said Organiza, who recently transferred from Far Eastern University to Jose Rizal University.

Now under national head coach, and JRU mentor Jojo Posadas, Organiza’s effort was his best so far, after winning his first half-marathon last December, with a clocking which was then at the 1:12 range.

For Organiza, this will serve as his preparation for the National Collegiate Athletic Association trackfest, and that’s when he has completed his residency period. By then, Organiza will compete in his regular events, the 1500-meter steeplechase and the 5000-meter run.

When the races were finished last Sunday, Organiza made his sister Christine Hallasgo proud, as they turned the men’s and women’s 21-kilometer run.

Organiza ran his fastest time ever, with his clocking of one hour, 10 minutes, and six seconds, which is regarded as the best overall time in this year’s race.

He outpaced a struggling Southeast Asian Games medallist Arlan Arbois when Orgniza finally reached the Vicente Roa St. finish line.

“Buildup niya iyan sa NCAA next year. Pumunta lang siya akin para mag-transfer nuong August,” said Posadas.

Posadas said Organiza, though, is still a long way off from being considered as part of the national pool in the middle to long-distance categories, since his opponents, like Arbois, were not in the best of shape when they competed.

The 23-year- old Arbois’ preparations and plans to head north for the Manila leg of the 7-Eleven series were ruined when floods struck his hometown in Davao City, his family’s eventual evacuation, and the repairs he had to do to his damaged home last Thursday, two weeks ago.

Arbois, a silver medallist in the 2023 SEA Games, almost succumbed to leg cramps at the halfway mark and still settled for the second spot with a good time of 1:12.39.

Gald that he was able to stay within range of his personal best, Arbois said he will use the prize money to repair and help others whose homes were damaged by flood waters in his home in San Rafael, Davao City.

Townmate Elmer Bartolo, whose home was also damaged by floods in Davao City, settled for third in 1:17.58.

Hallasgo, one of the country’s top marathon runners, chose to take it easy, waking up from a restful sleep some 10 minutes before gun time, coasted to the finish line pace with confidence, and with plenty of energy left in her. Peter Atencio

It actively participates in nutrition by aiding in the digestion of proteins, carbohydrates, and fats. Due to its complex nature, managing liver disease poses significant challenges.

“Since the liver possesses the ability to regenerate and has a considerable functional reserve, noticeable clinical signs of damage only manifest when the liver damage is quite severe and advanced,” said Dr. Samantha Bey, DVM, in “Nutrition and Liver Health in Dogs” published in the FuraPets website.

“This implies that a dog experiencing liver disease might have endured substantial and prolonged metabolic imbalances before a diagnosis is established and a treatment strategy created,” added Dr. Bey.

What is liver disease in dogs?

NTERIOR Design students recently launched a weeklong exhibition of functional chairs, coffee, and console tables that utilized different materials at the Ayala Malls, Manila Bay.

Featuring a wood base and recycled polyester, ‘Sylva’ took the second spot for the People’s Choice Award

Entitled LIKHAYAN: Creatives Supporting Creatives Creatives, the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde (DLS-CSB) students crafted furniture inspired by other Filipino artists.

The trailblazers gained the opportunity to present their inventions and immerse themselves in real-life experiential learning.

A roster of specialists screened the participants’ entries for the Professional’s Choice Award based on compliance w i t h the application of anthropometrics and ergonomics standards, medium selection, workmanship, and concept translation.

The Alon: Papasan Chair by Abyr Baculi and Phoebe Burce was hailed as the Grand Prize winner. Motivated by painter Justin Velasquez’s Vitamin Sea: Sculpture 16, the sustainable seating composition made of rattan, resin, lazio fabric, and acacia wood provided relaxation while harnessing the beauty of the ocean.

Summit’s Body by Andrea Lopez and Tiffany Lam finished second place. It encompassed the images of photographer Ara Custodio’s themes, such as cycling and everyday life. It used rattan to form the legs

that depicted a female body’s curves, while the side parts outlined the wheels of a bike, and a circular glass top represented the camera lens.

Daloy, a table stand by Sharilee Encarnacion and Vannah Diestro landed third. It captured ideas from ceramic maker Rosa Mirasol’s unique pottery shapes. It incorporated gmelina wood for the tabletop and base and metal woven wire mesh for the veil around the sides.

Andrea Vistro and Arriana Tupaz’s Neofluid and Shane Gutierrez, Samantha Peralta, and Mara Ramirez’s Padayon shared the fourth spot.

Marahuyo by Marymariz Dario and Abbigail Dimayuga placed fifth. It portrayed visionary Joshua Bon’s photographic outputs, which utilized the depth of light and shadows. The chaise lounge was composed of bamboo and rattan to display the underlying radiance of nature.

Some models that attracted the most votes from guests also received the People’s Choice Award.

Ashley Alcantara and Klara Reyes’ The Vessel Lounge Chair, which captivated the unconventional pottery of artisan EJ Espiritu, was named first in the recognition. It presents a sleek wooden arched backrest and storage beneath the seat.

Sylva by Precious Entienza and Mika Hilaga came second.

Influenced by visual originator Leeroy New’s biometric forms, it intertwined reclaimed wood base and recycled polyester for efficiency and comfort.
