Gov’t urges PUVs to beat deadline
LTFRB: Offices open until 5 p.m. Dec. 31 to make way for consolidation applicants By Maricel V. Cruz and Rio N. Araja
HE government on Friday clarified its decision to allow jeepney operators and drivers who failed to join the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) to operate beyond the Dec. 31 consolidation deadline, saying they would only be able to ply routes not adequately served by consolidated units.
T
Joel Bolano, chief of the Land Transportation Franchising Regulatory Board (LTFRB) technical division, said unconsolidated jeepneys in routes with at least 60 percent of units that consolidated would no longer be able to renew their provisional authorities to operate.
Only those in unconsolidated routes would be given special permits to operate until the end of January 2024, he added in a press briefing Friday. “In routes with totally no consolidation, they have until Jan. 31 to operate pending the process of assigning units
coming from other routes," he said in Filipino. Transport officials said there would be no extension of the deadline to apply for consolidation into either a cooperative or a corporation, the first step of the modernization program. Office of Transportation Cooperatives (OTC) chair Andy Ortega said offices of the OTC and LTFRB are open until 5 p.m. on Dec. 31, 2023 to accommodate those who would still avail of the consolidation. “We still have three days so they can hit the deadline. I hope we can encourage them to consolidate with only three days left,” he added. Transportation Secretary Jaime

Luneta a silent witness 127 years since Rizal’s death By Honor Blanco Cabie TODAY, the Philippines marks the 127th anniversary of the martyrdom of Dr. Jose Rizal, an advocate of reform but not revolution, who was shot by a firing squad
for sedition, conspiracy, and rebellion. Center of the celebration is the 58-hectare bayside Rizal Park, where President Marcos will lay a wreath at the 12.7-meter granite monument erected from 1908 to 1913, where the hero’s re-
mains are after being transferred from the Paco Cemetery in Manila. The area was formerly called “Luneta” – from the French word Lunette – which means a crescent-shaped fort,

THE Department of Health (DOH) on Friday ordered all public and private health facilities to go on "Code White" alert until Jan. 4, 2024 to prepare for accidents over the holidays. This means hospitals and health facilities are expected to prepare more medicines and supplies in their emergency and operating rooms, especially for trauma patients. Other needs such as x-ray plates and laboratory requirements will also be made available "without requirement for out of pocket by victims," the DOH said in a statement. “Under orders of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., the DOH and all hospitals and health facilities will be ready for all untoward incidents this Christmas and New Year season," Health Secretary Ted Herbosa said in a statement. Kerosene, diesel prices seen rising slightly By Alena Mae S. Flores PUMP prices will see mixed movement next week due to the volatility in world oil prices, industry sources said heading into the weekend. Based on the four-day trading of Mean of Platts Singapore (MOPS), the benchmark used by oil importers, the price of gasoline may have no movement or go up slightly by P0.10 per liter.
Meanwhile, diesel is forecast to have a price rollback of P0.10 to P0.35 per liter, and kerosene by P1 to P1.10 per liter. "These are attributed to the ease of concerns about shipping disruptions along the Red Sea and the Russian oil output expected to hold steady in 2024. Russia diverted its oil exports from Europe to India and China," Rodela Romero, Department Next page

By Othel V. Campos, Macon Ramos-Araneta, and Maricel V. Cruz THE Department of Agriculture (DA), along with other agencies and the Interagency Task Force on El Niño, has started implementing measures to contain the impact of the impending drought on food production and agricultural stakeholders. Among the measures carried out by the DA include the repair of and rehabilitation of irrigation canals. Over 740 kilometers of the targeted 843 kilometers have been fixed or built as of November, Agriculture Secretary Francisco Tiu Laurel Jr. said in a statement. Laurel said 40 units of small-scale irrigation systems have been revamped, covering 1,477.5 hectares to improve water distribution efficiency. Next page
