‘Rapidly-spreading’ strain now in PH DOH logs 18 cases of COVID-19 subvariant, urges Filipinos to mask up, get vaccinated

T

HE COVID-19 Omicron subvariant JN.1 has already entered the Philippines, the Department of Health said Sunday as it urged Filipinos to observe multiple layers of protection, including masking up, ensuring good airflow and adequate ventilation, and getting vaccinated.

The JN.1 has been classified by the World Health Organization as a "variant of interest” – quickly spreading even as the additional global public health risk it posed was “currently evaluated as low.” The DOH said it has detected the first 18 cases of JN.1 through genomic sequencing of samples collected from Nov. 16 to Dec. 3. All of the JN.1 cases have already

recovered, the Health department said. “There has been no significant increase in the number or severity of cases overall,” the DOH said. “New variants and strains of viruses like SARS-CoV-2 are always there - but only a few become "of concern". JN.1 is not one of those. It is another Omicron subvariant with no evidence of increased severity or unusual clinical presentation.

Xmas messages President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. I extend my heartfelt greetings to the Filipino people on this joyful Christmas Day. Every 25th of December, we honor the birth of Christ by expressing gratitude for the boundless love that God has showered upon us through the time-honored Filipino traditions of Simbang Gabi, gift-giving, and feasts with our friends, relatives, and families. But more than just a day of celebration, let us be reminded that the true meaning of Christmas lies in the recognition of the season as an opportunity to reach out to those who are suffering from solitude, sickness, and poverty. Indeed, there is no better way for us to share the gift of Christmas than by spreading hope to those who need it the most this holiday season. Let us kindle our hearts with goodwill, kindness, and compassion as we spread merriment in our homes and communities. By doing so, we do not only bring peace, love, and unity, but become living instruments of the timeless adage that God's work here on earth is truly our own.

Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year sa lahat!

As we gather under the glow of Christmas lights and the warmth of our homes, I am filled with gratitude and joy to extend my heartfelt greetings to every Filipino family. This festive season, let us cherish the precious gift of family. In every shared laugh, every shared meal, we weave stronger bonds that hold our families together. Let these moments remind us of the love and warmth that family brings into our lives, a love that is our truest treasure. Christmas is also a time of giving, not just of material gifts, but of kindness and compassion. In every gift shared, a thread of hope is woven into the fabric of our community. Let us embrace the spirit of Bayanihan, reaching out to our neighbors, and spreading joy to those in need. In doing so, we light up the lives of others, just as the parols light up our skies. As we celebrate this season, let's remember: Next page
