‘Exec action enough for ICC’ De Lima asserts only Marcos can reverse ‘unilateral’ withdrawal By Rey E. Requejo and Macon Ramos-Araneta
ORMER senator Leila de Lima said Friday an executive action would be enough for the Philippines to rejoin the International Criminal Court since its withdrawal did not benefit the country but only served the interest of one man: former President Rodrigo Duterte.

“An executive action would suffice, because, in the first place, the withdrawal [from the ICC] was unilateral,” De Lima said in an interview on ANC Friday. She offered this assessment in response to Senator Ronald dela Rosa’s statement that even if current President Marcos decided to rejoin the ICC, this would need the concurrence of the Senate. Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri and former Senate president Franklin Drilon had disputed Dela Rosa’s statement, saying this was the President’s decision alone since the Senate resolution that expressed its concurrence with the Rome Statute had never been repealed. “Why would it be so difficult to rejoin ICC when the withdrawal there Next page

HUMAN rights groups pushed for the release of peace consultants and political prisoners as peace talks between the government and the Communist Party of the PhilippinesNational Democratic Front are set to resume after being stalled for the past six years. “There’s really a need to do that and I think it is a must for the BBM (Marcos) administration especially since they need people to talk to at the negotiating table,” Karapatan secretary-general

THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas said inflation in November likely eased further to as low as 4 percent from 4.9 percent a month ago on the back of lower prices of food and fuel products as well as the stronger peso. In a statement, BSP projected the November 2023 inflation to settle within the range of 4.0 to 4.8 percent. "Higher prices of most agricultural commodities like rice, fruit, fish, and meat items and adjustments in electricity, LPG, and toll rates are the primary sources of upward price pressures in November," BSP said. "Meanwhile, lower prices of vegetables and petroleum products along with the peso appreciation could contribute to downward price pressures," it said. Inflation in October slowed to a three-month low of 4.9 percent from Next page
