HOUSE PANEL TO REVIEW FRANCHISE GRANTED TO QUIBOLOY’S SMNI TV By Maricel V. Cruz

SMNI OWNER. This file

photo shows a wanted poster issued by the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) against Pastor Apollo C. Quiboloy, founder and owner of SMNI News Channel or SNC, a religious free-to-air news and public service television network based in Makati City. It is owned and operated by Swara Sug Media Corp., the parent company of Sonshine Media Network International, a broadcasting arm of the Kingdom of Jesus Christ (KJC) led by the Filipino televangelist and religious leader. According to the FBI, Quiboloy is wanted for his alleged participation in a labor trafficking scheme that brought church members to the United States via fraudulently obtained visas and forced the members to solicit donations for a bogus charity, donations that actually were used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders. Members who proved successful at soliciting for the church allegedly were forced to enter into sham marriages or obtain fraudulent student visas to continue soliciting in the United States year-round, the FBI notice added.

THE House of Representatives committee on legislative franchises will conduct a review of the franchise to operate granted to Sonshine Media Network International (SMNI). In a privileged speech during Tuesday’s

session, Quezon Rep. David Suarez denounced what he saw in an SMNI program where hosts claimed Speaker Martin Romualdez spent P1.8 billion in just a year for his travels. The lawmaker said the reports were categorically false and constituted "fake news."

“In the spirit of transparency and accountability, I humbly request this august chamber to direct the committee on legislative franchises, in the exercise of its inherent oversight function, to investigate this matter immediately and other similar measures pending with Next page

By Macon Ramos-Araneta and Rey E. Requejo THE President, not the senators, will decide whether the Philippines will rejoin the International Criminal Court (ICC), Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said Tuesday. "To re-enter or to remain out of the jurisdiction of the International Criminal Court is not a decision we the senators make,” Zubiri said. The President, as the chief foreign policy maker, has that sole responsibility, Zubiri said. "He alone makes that decision and everything else is just noise on whether we should join or not," he added. Zubiri’s comment came amid a flurry of statements from lawmakers who want to see former President Rodrigo Duterte face an ICC investigation for his bloody war on drugs that killed thousands of suspects in anti-narcotics operations during his term.
