GOV’T DOING EVERYTHING TO FIND MISSING FILIPINA AS HAMAS FREES ONE FILIPINO HOSTAGE IN GAZA–MARCOS

RESIDENT Marcos said the government is leaving no stone unturned to locate a missing female Filipino dual citizen who is believed to be held hostage by the Palestinian militant group Hamas.

PH, AUSTRALIA KICK OFF JOINT AIR, SEA PATROLS By Charles Dantes THE Philippines and Australia started joint air and sea patrols as they seek to deepen their defense cooperation to counter China’s assertiveness in the region. The “maritime cooperative activity” came days after the United States held a similar exercise with the Philippines in the South China Sea, which Beijing claims almost entirely. President Marcos said Saturday the joint patrols were “a practical manifestation of the growing and deepening strategic and defense partnership between our countries.” “We endeavor to enhance bilateral interoperability in maritime security and domain awareness,” Marcos said on the social media platform X. In a joint statement, the Australian and Philippine defense chiefs said the three-day patrols showed their “shared commitment to exercising freedom of navigation and overflight consistent with international law.” The Philippines will deploy two navy vessels and five surveillance aircraft to join Australia’s HMAS Toowoomba warship and a P-8A maritime surveillance aircraft. The maritime patrols will be held inside the Philippines’ exclusive economic zone, Defense spokesman Arsenio Andolong said. In September, Mr. Marcos and Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese signed a strategic partnership that enabled the expansion of cooperation in several areas from defence and security to climate change and education. The long-anticipated Philippine patrols with the United States and Australia follow a spike in tensions between Beijing and Manila over territorial disputes in the South China Sea. Beijing’s expansive claims over the waterwater way approach the coasts of other countries – more than a th o us an d k ilometres from the nearest major Chinese landmass. With AFP

The President gave the assurance to the family of Noralyn Babadilla following the release of a Filipino who was held captive in Gaza for over a month now. “I am overjoyed to confirm that a Filipino, Mr. Gelienor ‘Jimmy’ Pacheco, was among the first group of 24 hostages released by Hamas yesterday,” Marcos said on his official X (formerly Twitter) account. Pacheco, 33, was taken hostage on Oct. 7. “We remain concerned over the whereabouts of our other national, Ms. Noralyn Babadilla, and are sparing no effort to locate and secure her if she is indeed found to be one of the hostages,” the President said. Speaker Martin Romualdrez said Pacheco’s release “ignites our hopes for the prompt discovery of the whereabouts of another missing national, Noralyn Babadilla.” “Echoing the Philippine Foreign Service’s commitment during this distressing period, we, in the House and the national government, vow to persistently engage with international partners and leverage our Middle Eastern assets until every Filipino is safe from the region’s turmoil,” Romualdez said. “We pray for the continued success of the truce and for all hostages to be released,” he added. HUSBAND’S FREEDOM FROM HAMAS AN ‘EARLY CHRISTMAS GIFT’ “AN early Christmas gift.” This was how Clarice Joy Pacheco described the news that her husband, Gelienor “Jimmy” Pacheco, was among the first batch of 24 hostages freed by Hamas rebels late Friday evening. “Finally ‘hon, God is really good,” she said in a Facebook post after her almost seven-week nightmare ended. “Thank you so much to all those who prayed for him, for us. To all those who helped us from the start, a big thanks to all of you.” “Let’s pray that all the hostages left will be re-

leased soon. I feel for their family. It’s not easy. Just keep fighting,” she added. In a statement from the Philippine Embassy in Israel, Jimmy said his faith in God and his love for his family kept him alive during his ordeal. “I am alive because of God. Since the first day of my abduction, I thought of my family. While I was there, my only wish was to survive for my family,” the 33-year-old caregiver and father of three said. Jimmy was taken hostage on Oct. 7 by rebels

who attacked the Kibbutz Nir Or where he was staying with his employer, 80-year-old Amitai Ben Zvi. Clarice was able to identify her husband in a Hamas video that surfaced on Telegram. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary Eduardo Jose de Vega said they will shoulder the travel expenses of Pacheco’s wife should she wish to visit him in Israel. “If the wife wants to visit, she doesn’t need a visa... we can pay for it, if she wants a compassionate visit,” De Vega said on Saturday.
