PBBM, Japan premier agree to boost defense cooperation By Charles Dantes PRESIDENT Marcos and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida agreed Friday to bolster defense cooperation between their countries amid China's expanding military presence in the region. At their meeting in Malacanang,

Kishida and Mr. Marcos confirmed they will begin negotiations on a new bilateral treaty, known as a reciprocal access agreement, to strengthen security ties and facilitate joint defense drills, government sources said. It will be Japan's first RAA with a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and the third

following pacts with Australia and Britain that took effect earlier this year. Kishida arrived in Manila on Friday afternoon. Kishida and Mr. Marcos also agreed to work together toward a special Japan-ASEAN summit in Tokyo in December. Japan is scheduled to host the gathering to commemorate 50 years of

friendship and cooperation with the regional bloc. On Saturday, Kishida is slated to become the first Japanese premier to deliver a speech to the Philippine Congress, in which he is certain to address Tokyo's basic policy on Southeast Asian diplomacy for the future, the government said. Next page

Francisco Laurel, president of the deep-sea fishing company Frabelle Fishing Corp., understood "the problems that agriculture is facing," Marcos said after swearing in the new secretary. Marcos made himself Agriculture secretary after becoming president in June 2022 and has overseen a surge in prices for produce, including staples like onions and rice. He sparked criticism in September when he imposed a temporary price cap on rice, which some economists warned could distort the market and lead to shortages. Marcos said Laurel's priority was gaining "control of the prices of all the agricultural commodities that are going up." Next page Francisco Tiu Laurel

By Charles Dantes and Rey E. Requejo PRESIDENT Marcos on Friday said he is hopeful that Filipinos who are trying to leave war-torn Gaza will be able to do so by Saturday, as the Israeli government has promised safe passage for civilians. The Israeli Ambassador to the Philippines, Ilan Fluss, successfully contacted both the foreign minister of Israel and the Philippine Ambassador Junie Laylo, the President said. “So, they promised us that the Filipinos will be able to go out today or tomorrow. That is what they promised us.

Saturday at the latest,” the President said in Filipino. The Philippine government is ready to bring the Filipinos home, with buses and embassy personnel on standby in Cairo. The Rafah Crossing is the only path out of the Gaza strip into Egypt. President Marcos also offered assistance to Thais, Vietnamese, and other Southeast Asian nationals stranded at the crossing. "It looks like we are the ones there first because the presence of Filipinos in the area is much higher than the others," President Marcos said. Next page
