PH ABSTAINS FROM VOTE ON TRUCE IN GAZA WAR NOTES NO MENTION OF HAMAS AMID ISRAEL’S ATTACKS
T
HE Philippines on Saturday abstained from voting on a United Nations resolution calling for an “immediate humanitarian truce” in Hamas-run Gaza, as it raised concerns on the mounting number of civilians killed in operations launched by Israel in response to an October 7 attack by Hamas militants on towns near its southern border. The Philippines was among 45 countries that abstained from the non-binding resolution at the UN General Assembly. A total of 120 members voted in favor while 14 others voted against it. The resolution, co-sponsored by Jordan and nearly 50 other countries, centered largely on the dire humanitarian situation in sealed-off Gaza as Israel presses on with its bombardment and prepares for a ground assault into the territory. The document urges the “immediate” provision of water, food, medical supplies, fuel and electricity, and unhindered access for UN and other humanitarian agencies trying to help the Palestinians. Meanwhile, the Philippine government is working closely with the Israeli Defense Forces to confirm the status of the two remaining missing Filipinos in Gaza. At the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City, Department of Migrant Workers (DMW) officer-in-charge Hans Leo Cacdac said about 770 Filipino families have sought aid to locate their loved ones in Israel through the agency’s helplines. Of that number, Cacdac said, “768 are accounted for,” but the whereabouts of the remaining two Filipinos are still pending “status updates.” The DMW chief said he is not privy to the details concerning the search for the missing Filipinos. Ambassador Antonio Lagdameo Sr. told the UN General Assembly that the Philippines is alarmed at the “state of civilian casualties” in the war between Israel and Hamas militants, which has dragged on for three weeks. LAST CHANCE. Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan
candidates in Molino VII, Bacoor, Cavite use jeeps to make rounds faster as the 10-days campaign period ended yesterday. Joseph Muego
TWO elementary schools in Mindanao that were to be used as polling precincts for the 2023 Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan elections (BSKE) were burned down, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) reportreport ed Saturday. This was as Comelec Chairman George Garcia urged the public to prepare for the election day on Monday by knowing their precinct number and voting center where they will cast their votes. Garcia advised voters to bring their voter’s identifica identification card or any valid ID to avoid hassles, as voting will start at 7 a.m. and cut off at 3 p.m. He reminded all BSKE candidates that campaigning is no longer allowed today after the campaign period ended midnight of Saturday. Giving and accepting free transportation, food, drinks and things of value, and using the voter’s affidavit of another for the purpose of voting is likewise disallowed. Ruminimbang Elementary School in Barangay Ruminimbang, Barira, Maguindanao del Norte was set ablaze at about 1:50 a.m. No casualties were reported, Garcia said. Meanwhile, the Poona Piagapo Central Elementary School, Old Poblacion in Poona Piagapo, Lanao Del Norte also caught fire at around 2 a.m. The fire resulted in the “complete destruction” of one of the school’s classrooms. However, the actual voting center that would be used in the BSKE was unaffected, said Garcia. The cause of the fires and the extent of the damages remain under investigation. GROUND BATTLES RAGE AS TURKEY CALLS FOR HALT TO AIR STRIKES BATTLES raged in Gaza on Saturday as Israel’s army said it expanded ground operations after intensifying its bombardment of the Palestinian territory three weeks after the deadliest attack in the country’s history. The United Nations warned of a looming “unprecedented avalanche of human suffering” inside the Gaza Strip, after weeks of relentless Israeli bombing, while the General Assembly called for an “immediate humanitarian truce”. Israel’s army relentlessly hammered Gaza on Saturday after a night of fierce bombardment that rescuers said destroyed hundreds of buildings. Turkey’s Recep Tayyip Erdogan urged Israel to “immediately stop” the attacks, while the families of Israeli hostages held by Hamas demanded a government explanation about their fate amid the army’s intensified air and artillery strikes. Israel launched its withering bombardment of Gaza after Hamas gunmen stormed across the border on October 7, killing 1,400 people, mostly civilians, and taking nearly 230 others hostage, according to Israeli officials. The health ministry in the Hamas-run Gaza Strip said Friday that Israeli strikes had killed 7,326 people, more than 3,000 of them children. The Israeli army said it had increased its strikes “in a very significant way”, while the Ezzedine alQassam Brigades said on Telegram it responded with “salvos of rockets”. In overnight raids, Israeli fighter jets hit 150 “terror tunnels, underground combat spaces and additional underground infrastructure” and “several Hamas terrorists were killed”, the army said on Saturday morning. The latest Israeli raids were one of the most intense nights of attacks since the war began and coincided with ground operations. AFP

RANDOM DRUG TESTS ON BUS DRIVERS AHEAD OF POLL, UNDAS EXODUS By Joel Zurbano and Charles Dantes AUTHORITIES on Saturday conducted random drug testing among bus drivers at the Parañaque Integrated Terminal Exchange (PITX) ahead of the Barangay and Sangguniang Kabataan Elections (BSKE) and the “Undas” break. The test conducted by the Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA), Department of Interior and Local Government (DILG),
National Capital Regional Police Office (NCRPO), and Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency (PDEA) aimed to ensure the safety of commuters using public transportation going to their respective provinces in time for All Saints’ and All Souls’ Days. No one among the public utility bus (PUB) drivers and conductors who participated in the random drug test was found positive for illegal drug use. Meanwhile, the MMDA said it sent around 1,500 traffic enforcers to ensure
a smooth flow of traffic and public order during the long weekend. “We also have Road Emergency Group – our ambulances and road emergency vehicles are ready in case of accidents. These vehicles have extrication equipment and are stationed along the major thoroughfares,” Victor Nuñez, the Director of MMDA’s Traffic Enforcement Group, said in a news forum in Quezon City. The Bureau of Fire Protection (BFP) also deployed around 1,000 personnel
to 66 cemeteries in Metro Manila to ensure public safety during the observance of Undas. “We have implemented what we call FAST, which stands for First Aid Service Team, in 66 locations within Metro Manila to provide medical assistance. We have EMS personnel in each cemetery now, so in case someone faints or has high blood pressure, we have personnel who can immediately respond,” BFPNCR Assistant Regional Director Senior Supt. Rodrigo Reyes said.
