Biden: US-PH pact ‘ironclad’
But Beijing rips Washington meddling in WPS dispute with Manila
U
S President Joe Biden said his country's defense commitment to the Philippines is “ironclad” after dangerous maneuvers by Chinese vessels caused collisions with Filipino boats in the West Philippine Sea on Oct. 22.
"Any attack on Filipino aircraft, vessels, or armed forces will invoke our mutual defense treaty with the Philippines," Biden told reporters at a press conference in Washington. “Just this past week, the PRC (People’s Republic of China) vessels acted
dangerously and unlawfully as our Philippine friends conducted a routine resupply mission within their own—their own exclusive economic zone in the South China Sea,” he said. “I want to be clear—I want to be very Next page
Remulla: PH to file environmental raps vs. China early 2024 By Rey E. Requejo THE Philippines is preparing to file an environmental case against China over the "destruction of marine habitat" at the West Philippine Sea early next year, the Department of Justice said. Justice Secretary Jesus Crispin Remulla said he hopes to file the case by January or in March at the latest. Remulla said the decision to file a case was reached during his meeting with Filipino legal experts on the action the government should take over the "environmental destruction" being committed by China in the country’s exclusive economic zone, particularly in the WPS. “We were encouraged to pursue what we think is a good case on behalf not only of the Filipino people but also of the rest of humanity,” Remulla said. “We believe it is ripe for the world to know the loss we are suffering because of what China is doing in our sea, and this action could benefit the entire world,” he added. Remulla said part of the evidence gathered to back the case was the documentation and videos taken by the Philippine Coast Guard. Remulla said among the legal experts he met were retired Supreme Court Associate Justice and former Solicitor General Francis Jardeleza and environmental lawyer and activist Antonio Oposa Jr., Next page

By Vince Lopez and Vito Barcelo THE Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said the country's security situation remains peaceful despite a rise in election-related violence four days ahead of the Barangay and Sangguniang
Kabataan Elections (BKSE) on Oct. 30. The PNP said the number of validated election-related incidents (ERIs) climbed to 23 as of Thursday, with 29 more undergoing validation. Some 77 incidents were deemed unrelated to the polls. "We will not be complacent. We are not ignoring these so we are strengthening our checkpoint operations and fo-
cused police and military operations to make sure that confirmed ERIs won't increase," PNP spokesperson Police Col. Jean Fajardo said in a radio interview. Fajardo noted that the number of validated ERIs for this year's BSKE is still lower than the 40 recorded in 2018. The PNP official also said that of the 22 confirmed ERI's, nine cases have been
filed before prosecutor's offices, one case has been filed in court while 12 are still undergoing investigation. The latest incident involved the gunning down of two poll bets and a supporter in Barangay Rosary Heights 12, Cotabato City on Monday. Fajardo said close to 800 police Next page
