‘Holy hour’ set for PH churches to pray for peace

By Charles Dantes PRESIDENT Marcos talked to the family of the third Filipino casualty in the cross-border attacks on Gaza strip which sparked a devastating war between Israel and Hamas. Mr. Marcos on Sunday called the sister of Loreta Villarin Alacre, a 49-yearold caregiver who was earlier reported missing after Hamas launched rockets from Gaza into Israel. He vowed to immediately bring home Alacre’s remains despite the challenges due to the volatile situation in Israel. “We have assistance for the family, but we will do everything we can to bring her home first. We just have to wait for the situation in Israel to calm down because it is very chaotic right now and everything is closed,” the President said. “We will help you. The government is here for you. All our embassies are on alert, they know your situation … Everyone wants to go home, so we are working Next page

Manibela: Strike ‘successful’, MMDA: Traffic disruption ‘minimal’ By Rio N. Araja, Joel E. Zurbano, Darwin Amojelar and Jun David THE government said a transport strike by the alliance Manibela failed to disrupt public transportation on Monday, even as the group stormed the office of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) to protest its public utility vehicle (PUV) modernization program and the alleged corruption at the agency. Members of the Malayang Alyansa ng Bus Employees at La-

borers (Manibela) stormed the LTFRB central office on East Avenue, Quezon City, holding a 20-minute picket that triggered heavy traffic in the area. “The credibility of the program [is in question]… it is clear that there is corruption in the implementation, and its aim is not to modernize the PUV,” Manibela president Mar Valbuena said. The LTFRB has been rocked by allegations of corruption, leading President Marcos to suspend its chief Teofilo Guadiz III earlier this month.

THE Archdiocese of Manila on Monday asked churches across the country for a “holy hour” to pray for peace in the Holy Land. “In solidarity with our brothers and sisters in the Holy Land, we request that our parishes and communities gather our people for prayer like the Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament/Holy Hour and the praying of the rosary on October 17, 2023 or any day your community decides,” it said in a circular dated Oct. 14 and released yesterday. The archdiocese added it will be sending the special prayer prepared by its Archdiocesan Liturgical Commission. The circular said the order is in accordance with the call of Latin Patriarch of Jerusalem Pierbattista Cardinal Pizzaballa for prayer and fasting for peace in the Holy Land. At least 1,400 people have been killed in Israel and 2,750 in retaliatory strikes on Gaza, according to tolls from officials on both sides.
