‘ADJUSTMENT’ NEEDED IN MUST-WIN TUSSLE VS. ANGOLA
By Peter Atencio
THERE are only two remaining games which Gila s Pilipinas coach Chot Reyes hopes to tuck away in a bid to keep the team’s chances of making it to the Olympics in Paris in 2024.
The 8 p.m. date with Angola tonight (Sunday) at the Smart Araneta Coliseum is a game Gilas could not afford to lose.
Another loss will relegate Gilas to the bottom of Group A, making the team kiss goodbye the next phase of
the FIBA World Cup.
“It’s a different team, but Angola pressures the ball as much as the Dominican Republic did so definitely, we have to make some adjustments in our offense,” said Reyes of the error-prone Gilas Pilipinas.
“We had 19 turnovers and that was big. We shot the ball well. We shot the ball better than Dominican (Republic), but they got a lot more attempts than we did so the story was the 19 turnovers and we gave up 17 offensive rebounds and that was it,” Reyes said.
Observers said players’ rotation is something that Reyes should also look into.
While his two big men, AJ Edub and June Mar Fajardo, sparkled on both ends of the floor, and the ever-reliable Jordan Clarkson shone with 28 markers, Reyes failed to maximize Kai Sotto who only saw action for 73 seconds. Slasher CJ Perez did not see action at all while Kiefer Ravena was playing well before he was taken out and was not given much exposure thereafter.

MARCOS ORDERS DOJ TO INTENSIFY CAMPAIGN VS. HUMAN TRAFFICKING
By Charles Dantes
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. has ordered the government to intensify its efforts against human trafficking, the Department of Justice (DOJ) said on Saturday.
According to DOJ Assistant Secretary Mico Clavano, President Marcos is keen on keeping the country’s Tier 1 ranking by the US State Department as he tasked the DOJ’s Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) to strengthen its operations.

SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin Romualdez on Saturday led the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair dry run in Naval, Biliran to mark the start of an ambitious undertaking that put together 50 programs and services of 33 government agencies, including the delivery of P80 million worth of assistance under the administration of President Ferdinand Romualdez Marcos Jr. in one roof for two days.
He said the goal is to respond to the challenge posed by the President to speed up the delivery of government services to the farthest corners of the country.
The program is intended to be replicated in every province.
“The President has challenged us to fast-track the delivery of public service in every corner of the country,” Romualdez emphasized. In response, we launched Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair. The entire membership of the House of Representatives is with

The House leader, in partnership with Tingog partylist Reps. Yedda Marie Romualdez and Jude Acidre led the pilot launch of the Serbisyo Fair at the Biliran Province State University in Naval.
It brought to the doorstep of Biliran residents at least 50 government programs, services, and assistance, including the labor department’s TUPAD and the DSWD’s AICS, which both provide financial aid to distressed citizens.
Biliran Rep. Gerardo Espina Jr. said it is an honor for the province to host the dry run of the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair.
With the launch of the Bagong Pilipinas Serbisyo Fair, which hopes to service over 900,000 citizens, Romualdez said the contributions of Congress would no longer be confined to the walls of the chamber but can be directly felt by the communities and the people themselves.
for their compliance with minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking and are actively working to address the issue.
Clavano said that Mr. Marcos was briefed on the issue of trafficking before the President graced the 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta, Indonesia, in which human trafficking is expected to be discussed.
“Yes. We have given the President a situationer previously on the area of human trafficking and he understands very clearly the depth and how widespread this problem is,” said Clavano during a news forum in Quezon City.
IACAT previously issued revised inter-agency guidelines, which tackle trafficking on international-bound
Filipino travelers. Also included in the revised guidelines is the boosting of jobs and opportunities in the country to keep Filipino workers migrating abroad, thus limiting the chances of trafficking.
“We have to understand that our population is a very migratory population.Around 10 percent of our population seeks to travel abroad and find their opportunities abroad and this is very specific to our country as opposed or as compared to other countries who have job opportunities where they are,” he added.
Clavano said that the DOJ and the IACAT are cooperating with its ASEAN partners in identifying transnational crime and its hotspots.
GERMAN FIRMS EYE MORE INVESTMENTS IN PH
By Othel V. Campos
GERMAN companies in the Philippines are inclined to increase their investments in the country as bilateral trade talks between the Philippines and the EU have given investors the confidence to continue doing business in the country, a survey said.
According to the Spring 2023 Survey of the German-Philippine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Inc. (GPCCI) 46 percent of the partici -
pating GPCCI members are likely to invest more in the country within the next 12 months.
“Given the recent advancements in the EU-Philippines free trade agreement and the positive outcome of a successful economic briefing in Germany back in July, we are confident that many German businesses will increasingly consider investing in the Philippines,” said GPCCI president Stefan Schmitz.
In a courtesy call in August 22, the
GPPCI presented the results of the recent survey to the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) and discussed related issues and concerns.
The groups also furnished PEZA the results of their bi-annual AHK World Business Outlook survey conducted among the GPCCI members.
The survey revealed that the Philippines generally exhibited a better or higher result in the areas of economy, investments, employment, overall situation, and expectations.
AN impeachment move against Department of Education (DepEd) Secretary and Vice President Sara Duterte over confidential funds in 2022 is still premature as of the moment, according to ACT Teachers party-list Rep. France Castro.
Their priority is to prepare for a report from the Commission on Audit (COA) than to file an impeachment complaint against Duterte, she said.
“The issue about impeachment is premature yet. It is just being played up too much,” she added.
Duterte would have the chance to explain the source of her more than P125 million in confidential funds once she faces Congress to defend the Office of the Vice President’s budget request, she cited.
The confidential fund was not part of the 2022 General Appropriations Act, the party- list lawmaker said.
“So if there have been confidential expenses, there are confidential funds. So where did those confidential funds come from?
Did the President transfer them?
This is a question that needs an answer,” she said.
She stressed that “we have no plan yet. We will have to look into something that could have been violated in the Condtitution but that (impeachment) is not our main (objective),” she added.

SENATE TO SET UP P100M CANCER FUND FOR POOR
By Macon Ramos-Araneta
THE Senate will lead the establishment of a “Cancer Endowment Fund” for the treatment of indigent cancer patients, Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri said.
Zubiri said he will also start to gather P100 million as an initial fund. He said the endowment fund will be named after the late Department of Migrant Workers Secretary Susan “Toots” Ople.
Zubiri noted this as a “dream” of Ople who was a breast cancer survivor. “She experienced being a cancer patient and fully aware of its difficulties, including the costly treatment which is definitely a burden to indigent patients,” Zubiri said.
With the sudden demise of Ople, Zubiri said they decided to push through with her dream. He said that the House of Representatives also agreed to come up with an endowment fund. “So we are hoping to gather huge funds for our indigent cancer patients.”
Zubiri said he will discuss this with Senator Sony Angara, who chairs the Senate Finance Committee.
Zubiri said he hopes to gather support from colleagues.

META FACES BACKLASH OVER CANADA WILDFIRE NEWS BLOCK
META is being accused of endangering lives by blocking news links in Canada at a crucial moment, when thousands have fled their homes and are desperate for wildfire updates that once would have been shared widely on Facebook.
The situation “is dangerous,” said Kelsey Worth, 35, one of nearly 20,000 residents of Yellowknife and thousands more in small towns ordered to evacuate the Northwest Territories as wildfires advanced.
She described to AFP how “insanely difficult” it has been for herself and other evacuees to find verifiable information about the fires blazing across the near-Arctic territory and other parts of Canada.
“Nobody’s able to know what’s true or not,” she said.
“And when you’re in an emergency situation, time is of the essence,” she said, explaining that many Canadians until now have relied on social media for news.
Meta on August 1 started blocking the distribution of news links and articles on its Facebook and Instagram platforms in response to a recent law requiring digital giants to pay publishers for news content.
The company has been in a virtual showdown with Ottawa over the bill passed in June, but which only takes effect next year.
Building on similar legislation introduced in Australia, the bill aims to support a struggling Canadian news sector that has seen a flight of advertising dollars and hundreds of publications closed in the last decade.
It requires companies like Meta and Google to make fair commercial deals with Canadian outlets for the news and information – estimated in a report to parliament to be worth Can$330 million (US$250 million) per year – that is shared on their platforms, or face binding arbitration. AFP
9 KILLED IN INDIAN TRAIN COACH FIRE
AT least nine people were killed Saturday after a train coach parked in southern India caught fire when a passenger tried to make tea, officials said.
The coach, which had been detached from a train, was stationed at the Madurai railway yard in the southern state of Tamil Nadu when the fire broke out before dawn.
“It was a single, stationary coach booked by a private tourist operator. Somebody tried to make tea and it caused the fire,” Madurai district spokesman Sali Thalapathi told AFP.
“Nine people have died, three of them are women. Nine others are injured but their injuries are not life-threatening.”
None of the bodies had been identified so far, he added.
Footage showed huge flames leaping out of the windows of the train carriage. AFP
CHINA PROBES EX-SPORTS EXEC FOR CORRUPTION
CHINA said Saturday the former chief of its Winter Olympic delegation was under investigation for suspected corruption, as the government pursues a crackdown on graft in the sport sector.
Ni Huizhong, who most recently headed the country’s winter sports management office, “is suspected of serious violations of discipline and law,” the General Administration of Sport said, using a common byword for alleged corruption.
Ni, 54, previously served as secretary-general of the Chinese delegation for last year’s Winter Olympics, which were held in Beijing in a COVID-secure bubble. He is one of a string of sports officials to come under scrutiny in recent months as the ruling Communist Party wages an industrywide anti-corruption drive.
China’s top public prosecutor said this month that former national football coach Li Tie had been charged with corruption offences including bribery. AFP

RUSSIA: TWO MORE UKRAINIAN DRONES SHOT
RUSSIAN authorities said Saturday that air defences had destroyed one drone as it approached Moscow and another close to the border with Ukraine.
“Tonight, air defense forces destroyed a drone on approach to Moscow in the Istrinskii district,” the capital’s mayor Sergei Sobyanin wrote on Telegram.
“Preliminarily, there were no casualties or damage. Emergency services are working on the site,” he added.
Moscow was rarely attacked during the early stages of the conflict but the city and other Russian regions have been targeted by a barrage of Ukrainian drone attacks in recent days, with Kyiv vowing to “return” the conflict to Russia.
The defence ministry said a second Ukrainian drone had been destroyed early Saturday in the Shebekino district, part of
the Belgorod region close to the border.
“An attempt by the Kyiv regime to carry out a terrorist attack with a drone against sites on Russian territory has been prevented,” the ministry posted on Telegram.
Authorities had said three civilians were killed by Kyiv’s forces in Belgorod on Wednesday.
That same day, a drone crashed into a skyscraper in a Moscow business district and smashed a window, without causing any casualties, according to authorities.
It was the sixth consecutive night the Moscow region had been targeted by drone strikes.
On Friday, the ministry said 42 drones had been brought down over Crimea, which Moscow annexed from Ukraine in 2014. AFP
The lawsuit is the latest step in a growing critical focus on the power provider in the wake of the blaze, which killed at least 115 people, with videos apparently showing downed cables setting light to vegetation in the hours before tragedy struck.
The lawsuit says there was plenty of warning of strong winds from a nearby hurricane, but Hawaiian Electric and its subsidiaries negligently kept power lines live.
“These power lines foreseeably ignited the fast-moving, deadly, and destructive Lahaina Fire, which completely destroyed residences, businesses, churches, schools, and historic cultural sites,” the lawsuit, filed Thursday, says.
“Defendants knew that the high winds the (National Weather Service) predicted would topple power poles, knock down power lines, and ignite vegetation.
“Defendants also knew that if their overhead electrical equipment ignited a fire, it would spread at a critically rapid rate.”
The county—which is itself under pressure over what critics say was a lack of preparation ahead of the fire and a lackluster response in its aftermath – is demanding unspecified damages and compensation for the destruction.
“Maui County stands alongside the people and communities of Lahaina and Kula to recover public resource damages and rebuild after these devastating utility-caused fires,” the county said in a statement. AFP

UN APPROVES PH-LED WORLD BASKETBALL DAY RESOLUTION
By Gabriellea Pariño
THE United Nations
General Assembly
(UNGA) adopted on Friday the Philippine-initiated resolution on World Basketball Day to be celebrated every December 21.
The Philippines, along with Indonesia, Nicaragua and Peru led the filing of the resolution which was cosponsored by 77 countries.
With the UN decision, basketball
became the first team sport to be recognized by the UN General Assembly with its own international day.
Philippine Ambassador to the United Nations Antonio M. Lagdameo emphasized the importance of basketball in the country, saying that the sport symbolizes unity “while fostering connections among people from diverse origins, and promoting global peace.”
In his introductory speech before the UN General Assembly, Lagdameo also said “as a globally recognized sport, basketball transcends borders, cultures, and languages. It serves as a unifying force where people from different backgrounds can come to -
gether, bond and communicate with each other, creating connections and breaking down barriers, and thereby contributing to peace.”
Lagdameo further said the adoption of the resolution “is very timely, as the 2023 Fiba World Cup of Basketball has just started today, 25 August, in three major cities in Asia – Manila, Jakarta, and Tokyo.”
“It is an honor for my own country, the Philippines, to host this global competition because basketball is in our national DNA. We have more basketball courts per capita than anywhere in the world,” Lagdameo said.
Lagdameo noted that the Philip -
pines has “more basketball courts per capita than anywhere in the world.
The Philippines established Asia’s first and oldest professional basketball league in 1975, the Philippine Basketball Association, which remains active and competitive to this day, according to Lagdameo. Basketball is one of the most popular team sport worldwide, and the first basketball game was played on December 21, 1891 at the YMCA International Training School in Springfield, Massachusetts, USA, according to FIBA.
In a statement before FIBA officials, President Ferdinand R. Marcos,
Jr. stressed that the FIBA World Cup is “going to have a very enthusiastic, knowledgeable, loud, passionate crowd for every single day.”
The ambassador further emphasized on the sport’s impact as a ground for global grassroots enjoyed by people of all ages and skill levels.
“Basketball plays a role in promoting health, mental well-being, and community engagement, as it contributes to global health goals. It is a powerful tool for promoting the values of discipline, respect for rules, team spirit, inclusivity, as well as women empowerment,” he added.

STARTUP TURNS SCRAP PLASTIC INTO COMMODITY
A fintech startup, Plastic Bank is a profit-first social enterprise founded by David Katz. It is a banking application that monetizes good plastic ethically collected by partner communities.
“We are a business-first platform built on a social paradigm. We create the space for a financial transaction to digitally occur by harnessing the unique capability of plastic as a clean and reliable source of income,” Katz said. The company operates in countries where poverty incidence and plastic pollution are high.
Plastic Bank has been touring the world to gather ocean-bound plastics that have strayed far into the international waters. Starting from Haiti, Plastic Bank headed to other plastics-heavy countries like the Philippines, Brazil, Cameroon, Egypt, Indonesia and Thailand.
Plastic Bank created a plasticoffset ecosystem that supports communities, protects the ocean from further degradation and provides sustainable corporate solutions for companies and brands.
The Philippines has the biggest number of participants among the seven economies where Plastic Bank has presence.
Plastic Bank’s ethical collection system has resonated among 8,000 registered members in the Philippines, representing nearly a fourth of the 37,000 members globally.
Plastic Bank started operating in the Philippines in 2016.
Plastic Bank teams up with plastic collectors and
aggregators like junk shops and institutional partners who recycle the resource material, allowing the reprocessed plastics to reenter the supply chain as high-value products used by mostly by retail and manufacturing sectors.
“Our collection members are making a profound impact on our planet and our communities with each day they spend on preventing plastic from entering the ocean. We aim to give back by providing our most inspiring members with a transformative experience that fosters moments of joy, whether that means helping them reunite with their families or offering financial assistance to fulfill their aspirations,” Katz said.
With collection points in Cavite, Laguna, Metro Manila, Naga and Palawan, the enterprise has helped thousands of families and individuals rise from a state of abject poverty to become financially-abled individuals and entrepreneurs.
Plastic Bank redefined the material not as waste, but a resource commodity and reinvented the identity of waste pickers as plastic collectors, in an attempt to dignify the practice which is Katz say, is a decent form of livelihood.
Katz said that for the longest time, waste collectors were stigmatized in their profession, but the platform that
BEVERAGE MANUFACTURER STEPS UP RESOURCE MANAGEMENT
PEPSI-COLA Products Philippines, Inc. (PCCPI) takes its role as a responsible environmental steward seriously, as it strives to manage its use of water, electricity, energy, and fuel in all its manufacturing facilities.
PCPPI is committed to observe the United Nation’s (UN) Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in creating a positive impact on society with programs focused on environmental sustainability, nationbuilding, and inclusive development.
Plastic Bank offers elevates waste pickers to resource material collectors.
Tens of thousand of Filipino families are benefitting from collecting plastics and selling them to Plastic Bank though the collection centers. Collection community members are paid in cash, which is the preferred currency for most Filipinos who are still digitally-challenged. The bank also offers to pay members through bank account if they have one.
Plastic Bank makes it possible for reprocessed plastic, known as Social Plastic, to be reintegrated into products and packaging as part of a closed-loop supply chain. The enterprise is providing means to prevent ocean-bound plastic from reaching the waters and collect plastics that have found their way into the water system.
Caring for members
In mid-August 2023, Katz and his crew visited the Philippines to honor outstanding members. Plastic Bank distributed monetary incentives, health assistance and, to some, small livelihood business that will add to the member’s income.
Katz said the bank is quite generous to members who are accorded an accident insurance, a well-thought of incentive to safeguard their well-being from untoward events as resource collection has its risks and perils.
“Picking up waste is quite risky and could result to different circumstances. So what Plastic Bank here in the Philippines can do is to also provide them accident insurance in case there are emergencies. That is on top of the market price that they receive from the junk shop that they deliver the scrap. We actually give extra, so many of our collectors receive national healthcare. We facilitate that and often, we give extended health benefits as well,” he said. Similar to a real bank, members are allowed to borrow money by simply pressing a button on the Plastic Bank app. Loans taken can be paid using plastic as currency, a value proposition unique to Plastic Bank.
The bank gives value to plastic by buying the materials and allowing third-party entrepreneurs to upcycle the scraps collected from
partner communities. Plastic Bank gives premium to ethically-sourced plastic. While other aggregators buy at P8 to P15 per kilogram of the material, Plastic Bank buys at twice the market price.
Lasting partnerships
By partnering with hundreds of local junk shops, aggregators and processors, Plastic Bank empowers its network, giving them access to a digital technology that allows them to manage their supply chain.
“We also work with recycling partners to build and process the material which are bought by our brand companies and there also recyclers who can export the recycled units for US dollars instead of selling them locally,” Katz said.
In more than eight years that Plastic Bank is operating in the Philippines, it teamed up with big manufacturing brands such as CocaCola Philippines, Watsons, Philusa Corp. and Ever Bilena Cosmetics Inc. that are buying back the scrap plastic collected through the bank’s system that they recycle to be reused in the sustainable circular packaging ecosystem.
Plastic Bank is building a profit solution for partner brands and simultaneously creating a space where companies are given a most convenient way to comply with their environmental, social and governance commitments, especially now that the Extended Producers Responsibility Law is enacted.
Katz is proud that Plastic Bank gives corporations the option to make the right decisions for humanity.
“Everything is traceable. We are a blockchain-enabled company where every single transaction including the fine details of where, who, how much, the volume and time of transaction is recorded. In a sense, we are a third-party verifier for our partners’ ESG compliance. We take away all encumbrances and provide them a good marketing story,” he said.
Exchanges are recorded through its proprietary blockchain-secured platform that enables traceable collection, secures income and verifies reporting.
Plastic Bank aims to make the platform a household buzzword. It is building a strong social media presence to encourage people to come together to create a “wasteless world.” Othel V. Campos

“For water, our target is to reduce usage by 10 percent, while for fuel, energy, and power, our goal is to reduce them by 4 percent. As of end-July this year, we have already reduced our total energy use by 1.5 percent, keeping us on track with our targets,” said PCCPI director for manufacturing Walton Firmeza.
PCPPI’s resource management policies follows the 3Rs approach to manage water consumptionreduce, re-use, and recycle - through the company’s Luntiang Yaman program.
PCPPI is working to reduce its carbon footprint by using solar panels in select manufacturing facilities for the program’s first phase. With the shift, PCPPI is looking reduce use of grid electricity in select plants by as much as 30 percent, and by 8 percent on its total grid electricity usage.
“We assess our organizational priorities based on where we can make the most impact. Among the initiatives we have in place addresses our use of water and energy for our returnable glass bottles (RGB),” Firmeza said. “Our bottle washers consumes most of a facilities’ energy. As such, we ensure that we use energy-efficient washers, conduct proper and regular maintenance, and train our teams on how they can help support our productivity goals,” Firmeza added.
BSP LAUNCHES LEGAL GUIDE ON BANKING LAWS
THE Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas (BSP) recently launched “Banking Laws of the Philippines - Annotated”, a legal book that chronicles the evolution of banking laws in the Philippines.
“It is important to chronicle these changes (in banking laws) to see where we have come from and to chart where we will go. Just keeping up with these is not easy. That is why it is very important that a good book covers all of these,” said former BSP governor Felipe Medalla.
The Philippines has implemented a number of banking laws that respond to ever-changing practices brought about by increases in financial institutions, among other factors.
The newest volume consolidates, revises, and updates the contents of a three-volume series covering the New Central Bank Act, the General Banking Law, and other special laws were released over a decade ago, covering Philippine banking laws from 2010 to 2012.
Published and distributed by Rex Book Store, Inc., “Banking Laws of the Philippines - Annotated” is a collaboration of BSP experts and seasoned lawyers, led by senior assistant governor and general counsel Elmore O. Capule.

Led by EVAP President Edmund Araga and AFEVA Director Dennis Chuah, the delegation included key figures like EVAP Chairman Rommel Juan and Chairman Emeritus Ferdi Raquelsantos.
Mr. Rico Mariano, Philippine Commercial Counsellor to Vietnam, facilitated the dialogue.
During the session, President Edmund Araga presented the Philippines’ EV industry’s current state and potential, while Chairman Rommel Juan highlighted incentives from the Electric Vehicle Industry and Driving Act (EVIDA). Chairman Emeritus Ferdi Raquelsantos emphasized the incentives tied to electric E-jeepney production, underscoring the potential of electric mobility.
Advancements were shared during the meeting to broaden perspective towards international standards and
infrastructures. The discussions were crucial for the potential Vietnam Electric Vehicle Association, aligning with AFEVA’s goals for regional cooperation, knowledge sharing, and technological exchange. In addition, VinFast executives expressed interest in the upcoming Electric Vehicle Summit in the Philippines from October 19 to 21, a platform gathering industry leaders to discuss trends and challenges. One compelling case in point is Ayala Corporation’s AC Motors, which is undergoing a substantial operational overhaul. Leading this transformation is Jaime Alfonso Zobel de Ayala, who has taken the reins at AC Motors Group. The company, a major player in the Philippine automotive arena, handles renowned car brands like Kia, Volkswagen, Maxus, and also manages Honda and Isuzu dealerships, along with KTM and Husqvarna motorcycles.
Jaime Alfonso’s ascension coincided with the promotion of Brian Buendia to a significant role in Kia Philippines Motor Corporation (KPMC), the official importer and distributor of Kia vehicles in the country. This shift follows the retirement of Manny Aligada, who had helmed KPMC since its reorganization in 2019.
Recently, AC Motors orchestrated a round-table discussion with media members, introducing Jaime Alfonso as the new head of AC Motors Group, a subsidiary of AC Industrial Technology Holdings. This development accompanied AC Motors Group’s announcement of a strategic collaboration with BYD, a global powerhouse in electric car manufacturing. Jaime Alfonso is poised to take on a key leadership role as the new chairman of AC Motors Group, with Toti Zara, the AC Motors president, continuing to oversee the company’s automotive operations.
The revelation of the BYD partnership raised eyebrows, given AC Motors’ portfolio of Japanese-made vehicles. However, this move aligns with Ayala Corporation’s commitment to advancing sustainable mobility and reducing emissions. Moreover, Ayala Corporation’s recent series of environmental pledges underscore its dedication to combating pollution.
As Ayala Corporation accelerates the establishment of EV infrastructure, aiming to bolster EV sales, its current partnerships may not align with this electrified future. One notable subsidiary reportedly has only committed to 60 top-tier EVs since its launch last year, falling significantly short of their EV infrastructure expansion targets.
Turning to the expertise of Chinese company BYD, which has already produced over 5 million EVs and outpaced Tesla in global EV production, AC Motors’ aspiration to bring affordable and high-quality EVs to the market becomes increasingly attainable.
In this pivotal moment, AC Motors’ strategic collaboration with BYD signals a resolute commitment to a greener tomorrow, steering the Philippine automotive landscape toward a more sustainable and electrified future.

THE life of a public leader has its ups and downs, depending on the public’s demands and response to the efforts of those in office. But one thing’s sure–it takes much gusto from an individual to appreciate the platform of a public leader to bring the anticipated change in society.
Fortunately for the residents of Makati’s second district, their congressman, Luis N. Campos Jr., is brimming with enthusiasm to be the man who inspires change and advocates for their well-being.
Campos began as a businessman but always remembered his childhood dream of becoming a congressman. As fate would have it, the boy from Dasmariñas, Cavite, eventually made his aspiration come true.
He succeeded his wife, incumbent Makati Mayor Abby Binay, who served as congresswoman from 2007 to 2016. Campos supported her during her three terms in Congress, even sharing that he inspired her to run for the position. In turn, he played his part by being the person Makatizens could talk to as he went around the district to get to know the area and its residents better.
The couple worked

like a well-oiled machine, with Binay working on the executive side, thanks to her detailorientedness, and Campos as the man on the streets.
“That translates into a good partnership. It’s always been like that with us. I get a feel of the ground kasi I’m a grassroots politician,” Campos told Manila Standard LGU
Campos has since become a familiar face in Makati’s Second District thanks to connections he established with its residents. The experience also helped him de ne his brand of public service while establishing meaningful relationships with the public.
“I made so many friends. It gave me a chance to help out. You feel the love and the camaraderie,” he said.
Eventually, the power couple systematized a lot in the district, with Binay implementing numerous programs while exercising her political will.
They also practice fair leadership, eliminating any biases in their respective administrations while focusing on providing the services needed to ensure their constituents lead better lives.
Moreover, Campos appreciates loyalty, capability, enthusiasm, and foresight as necessary values to support his initiatives as a public leader. After all, as a representative of the highly urbanized country’s nancial hub, he has to instigate or join any initiatives that allow Makati to be a pioneering city that o ers world-class services.
Campos assumed a seat in Congress in 2016, still following the initiatives he started with Binay, as he’s a rm believer in continuity, particularly how good and bene cial measures should be maintained in society while improving those that have yet to achieve their maximum potential.
As Congressman, Campos has various advocacies, including women empowerment and youth development, among other sectors. But the one sector he’s focusing more on is sustainability.
“I’m pushing that the government can make a study of the Laguna Lake to legislate and repurpose it into a freshwater source for the metropolitan area,” he said. He led HR01084, or a resolution directing the Committee on Ecology to consider using Laguna Lake as an alternate source of potable water to support Angat Dam.
Despite his continuous push for the development, Campos clari ed that he’s not seeking immediate action to repurpose Laguna Lake. Instead, he hopes it’ll nudge Filipinos in the right direction to see what other opportunities they can achieve from this change.
BINAY WELCOMES VP’S DECISION TO MANAGE, SUPERVISE 14 SCHOOLS
MAKATI Mayor Abby Binay on Thursday welcomed the decision of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte to assume the management and supervision of 14 schools in Makati’s ten barangays a ected by the Supreme Court decision.
Mayor Abby said this decision is a step forward in ensuring the uninterrupted and quality education students deserve.
“We welcome the decision of Vice President and Education Secretary Sara Duterte to take over the management and supervision of the 14 schools. This decision will greatly ease the worries and concerns of our students, parents, and teachers,” she said.
The Makati Representative understands that radical ideas and changes like these often face resistance. Nonetheless, he welcomes challenges if it means becoming the catalyst that would start a more progressive perspective of things.
On the other hand, he is the principal author of 70 bills submitted to the House of Representatives. He is also pushing for high-speed internet services and the construction of digital infrastructures to meet the demands of modern Filipinos.
As he nears the end of his term in Congress, it’s evident that Campos is far from nished in his public service duties.
Certainly, Campos’s passion for public service is there and vigorously burning as he eyes progressive change for his constituents. And that’s the thing about the Makati representative. He sees the people as a constant rather than a variable in being a successful leader, which makes him well-loved in his district, further solidifying the hard work he put into being their champion.
UMAK WINS BIG IN 35TH GAWAD ALTERNATIBO
ANIMATION majors from the University of Makati’s Batch 2022 did not disappoint, as they clinched the top spot and two other awards in the Animation Category of the 35th Gawad CCP Para sa Alternatibong Pelikula at Video.
Taking home the well-deserved 1st Place is the lm “Alon,” brought to life by Nicole Salazar, Eugene Hontiveros, Jhon Mark Cutamora, and Andrei Alano. This work alludes to the struggles of smallscale sherfolks as they assert their rights over precious shing grounds and marine resources.
This remarkable achievement a rms the University’s continued status as a thriving hub for learning in the eld of animation, providing a nurturing environment conducive to innovative learning experiences.
The 3rd Place honor went to the lm “Grace,” a captivating narrative crafted

All three lms were produced in 2022 as capstone projects by CAL’s Multimedia Arts students; they premiered last November 2022 at AniMakati, a college-organized online lm showcase. Their selection was in keeping with the vision of Gawad Alternatibo as a platform for alternative cinema that challenges norms and sparks thought-provoking conversations. The mayor cited DepEd Order No. 023, series 2023, which states that: “Hence, in the pursuit of protecting the best interest and welfare of our learners, teachers, and non-teaching personnel, the O ce of the Secretary shall directly supervise the management and administration of all 14 schools, pending a transition plan, e ective immediately.”
It also indicated that all school activities, including those initiated by the city governments of Makati and Taguig, are subject to the prior approval of the Office of the Secretary (OSec) during the transition period.
The said order has nulli ed all previous orders and issuances made by the Department of Education and other national government agencies pertaining to the transfer of jurisdiction.
Mayor Abby said she looks forward to working wholeheartedly with the team created by Vice President Duterte to ensure a harmonious and e ective transition. “ Kaisa kami ni Vice President Sara sa kanyang layunin. Unahin natin ang kapakanan ng ating mga guro, mga kabataan at kanilang mga magulang,” she also said.
The mayor earlier said Makati is willing to provide free uniforms, shoes, school supplies, and other needs to over 30,000 public school students in 14 a ected public schools in 10 EMBO barangays. Full story on manilastandard.net.

UPRAISING THE FILIPINO YOUTH
Why students look forward to the inaugural Puregold CinePanalo
CREATING opportunities for the Filipino youth is a key advocacy of Puregold. With their latest endeavor, Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival, the company looks to help student filmmakers fulfill their aspirations and get a jump-start in their careers.
Vincent Co, President of Puregold Price Club, Inc., affirms the company’s intention to reach out to the youth through Puregold CinePanalo.
“Education, complemented with hands-on experience, opens doors for our youth,” he says. “We are proud to extend this support to students seeking to tell their stories. And we anticipate seeing their works at the upcoming Puregold CinePanalo Film Festival.”
Puregold is currently on the lookout for twenty-five talented and motivated student directors
festival. The select few will each be given a grant of P100,000 to fund their short film production.
Filmmaking remains one of the most financially challenging among all creative pursuits. The costs can be daunting: location and equipment rentals, plus the professional fees of the cast and crew. It’s money that can be hard to find. Even seasoned professional directors speak of the difficulty in securing funding for their projects.
It is thus a struggle for aspiring filmmakers to raise the resources they need for their art. Lack of funds likewise deter many film students from completing their final thesis projects.
It is a matter that Vincent totally understands. He discloses that most filmfest applicants cite their final thesis as their main motivation for taking on the challenge. “There’s a whole host of potential talents out there just waiting for a break,” he says. “It is our hope that Puregold CinePanalo will provide a platform for these budding filmmakers to show their craft, and acquire the means to finish their studies.”
The completed student shorts will be screened alongside five feature-length films at Gateway Cinemas from March 8 to 10, 2024. The shorts will also be posted across Puregold’s official social media pages such as YouTube and TikTok. Interested participants may email cinepanalo.com

KATHRYN BERNARDO IS ‘A VERY GOOD GIRL’
GMA Music artist Gel Aquino delves into the depths of heartbreak with her latest selfpenned emotional ballad “Ang Nais Ko,” now available on digital platforms worldwide. Inspired by personal experiences and stories of heartache, Gel poured her heart and soul into “Ang Nais Ko,” a song that resonates with those who have endured pain in their relationships. In the song, she shares her heartfelt desire for a relationship that is built in love, trust, and respect.
“The inspiration for this song comes from those who have experienced heartbreak, especially women who have been hurt and become martyrs in their relationships. The main message I want to convey is that in a relationship, one should express their desires clearly and honestly, as communication is vital to understanding and strengthening a bond,” she shares.
By Nickie Wang
FOR Kathryn Bernardo, being “a very good girl’ or being a good person in general is very complex to explain. Taking a cue from the title of her latest film, which also stars BAFTA and Golden Globe nominee Dolly de Leon, she explained that goodness stems from honesty and extending help to others.
Yet, for her, embodying goodness involves embracing imperfections, and welcoming life’s complexities, messiness, and chaotic moments. It entails acknowledging one’s flaws and still desiring to be a good person despite them.
“Being a good girl or person means accepting your imperfections, accepting all the mess and the chaos and your flaws, and through all that, at the end of the day, you still want
to be a good person, as long as you try to be a better person, then you’re good,” Kathryn shared during the grand media conference for A Very Good Girl
In the upcoming film, Kathryn takes on the role of Philo, a seeker of vengeance, while Dolly embodies the character of the affluent and enigmatic Mother Molly. The movie, a celebration of Star Cinema’s 30th anniversary, delves
into the intricate plot of revenge and intrigue.
“It’s such an honor because I will be working, she agreed to work with me, with the one and only Ms. Dolly de Leon. For sure marami akong matututunan sa kanya. I can’t wait to meet her again…What a great honor na gumawa at nabigyan niya ako ng oras,” Kathryn said.
Scheduled for nationwide release on September 27, A Very Good Girl unfolds the narrative of Philomena Angeles (Kathryn), who is determined to dismantle the reputation of her fellow socialite and business magnate, Mother Molly Suzara (Dolly). As Philo delves deeper into the opulent yet shadowy existence of Mother Molly, her intricate revenge scheme becomes more intricate than she initially imagined.
“It’s a gray character, and it’s fun to portray. It’s a project that I have long been requesting from Star Cinema, and I’m glad it’s a lot different than the usual role I play,” the young superstar added.
This female-driven film marks Kathryn’s highly anticipated return to the big screen following the success of her 2019 blockbuster, Hello, Love, Goodbye. Meanwhile, for internationally acclaimed actor Dolly de Leon, A Very Good Girl signifies a significant milestone as her inaugural lead role and her first collaboration with ABS-CBN.
Completing the cast are Chie Filomeno, Jake Ejercito, Gillian Vicencio, Kaori Oinuma, Ana Abad Santos, Nour Hooshmand, Donna Cariaga, Althea Ruedas, Nathania Guerrero, and Angel Aquino
The song has taken the music scene by storm, making an impressive debut at the #3 spot on iTunes PH’s Top 100 songs chart upon its release. What makes this achievement even more remarkable is that it is the only OPM track to secure a place in the Top 10 of iTunes PH’s chart. This remarkable feat underscores Gel’s ability to connect deeply with her audience through her heartfelt compositions and powerful vocals.
Gel’s partnership with GMA Music is a joyful experience. Guided by Kedy Sanchez , the Artist and Repertoire Manager, she’s perfected singing techniques and emotional expression. The recording session was smooth. Gel’s grateful for this rare opportunity with GMA Music, making her artist dream come true.
NEW P-POP GROUP LONGS FOR LOST LOVE IN NEW BALLAD
OVER four months after their remarkable debut with three notable singles, members of Pluus released their single “Missing You” under Universal Records Philippines. The SBTown’s P-Pop boy group also unveiled the official music video for this song.
Portraying the emotion of missing or longing for a loved one, “Missing You” is a poignant ballad that has captured the hearts of many, despite being an unreleased song just a few months ago.
It was written after the song “Cross My Heart,” offering a glimpse into the internal struggle between the rational mind, which seeks to let go, and the relentless longing of the heart that refuses to give up.
While “Cross My Heart” is about letting go, “Missing You” tells the story of the complex emotions associated with yearning and deeply missing someone.
Pluus’ fandom, also known as Sum, has patiently awaited the release of this song, as the group has been performing
this hidden gem since their debut showcase “Pluus +ime Is Now,” up to their recent local mall tours such as the “WeGo SUM-all Tour.”
The boys performed this new single at the comeback concert of their sister group, YGIG, which took place at the SM North EDSA Skydome. As expected, their fans absolutely loved every second of it.
Following the release of “Missing You,” Pluus became the cover feature of the “P-Pop On The Rise” playlist on Spotify. The song was also included in the New Music Friday playlists of not just one or two, but eight Asian countries: Philippines, Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and South Korea.
Moreover, the boys shared heartfelt personalized letters online for their beloved Sum, just in time for their 4th monthsary celebration. In these letters, the group sincerely expressed their yearning for their fans.

“The Café reopened in 2022, offering buffet breakfast with free-flowing coffee, tea and juices that cater to both hotel staying guests and the public,” said Chad Ogden, City of Dreams Manila Director of Food and Beverage Operations.
“[But] there was a clamor to bring back the lunch and dinner buffet, and with the business level back nearly to pre-pandemic level, it was timely to revive the well-loved buffets at The Café, known for the quality of both local and international cuisines offered,” he added.
Ogden said the menu “evolves to continually offer new experiences, especially to returning guests.”
“We’ve enhanced our buffet offerings by infusing sustainable attributes such as the serving of 100% Filipino coffee and sustainably sourced local vegetable and seafood produce,” he said.
There are new chefs on board, too.
“Not to be missed are the noodles and other Asian-inspired dishes, which are recipes of our Malaysian chef who helms The Café and previously, our contemporary Southeast Asian bistro Red Ginger. The laksa, for example, is easily one of the buffet favorites,” Ogden said.
Warm and flavorful, the laksa noodle soup served at The Café does not shy away from bold, authentic flavors of the coconut-curry base, with a generous serving of fishcakes, prawns, tofu, and hard-boiled egg, among others.
Unique creations of Executive Pastry Chef Hoon Sung are also showcased on the buffet, such as the “croffle” or a croissant-waffle which is achieved by cooking croissant dough in a waffle maker.
“This is quite popular in South Korea and in Japan. Best served hot, the flakiness of the croffle pairs well with ice cream, fresh fruits, and compotes,” Hoon said in a separate interview.
While mainly a dessert item, Hoon said he is open to experimenting with savory flavors, such as cream cheese paired with bacon or smoked salmon.
Well-loved items in the buffet pre-pandemic are also present in the current spread, Ogden said.

“Our selection of seafood that can be requested cooked a la minute in garlic butter sauce and the pastas cooked into the guests’ choice of sauce and accompaniments, the Japanese corner of sushi and sashimi, and the roast carving at dinner are some of the dishes we’ve brought back,” he said.
“We are seeing an influx of guests returning to our restaurants. And with guests clamoring for the return of our full buffet offerings, they can expect different menu cycles which will give them a different dining experience each time they get back,” Ogden added.
The Café’s buffets are offered at P2,350 net for dinner; P1,250 net for lunch, and P1,150 net for breakfast. The breakfast rate is inclusive of free-flowing coffee and tea, while free-flowing juices, local draft beer, red and white house wines are included on the dinner and lunch rates.
With modern interiors and high ceilings, the Café offers a range of seating options with a maximum capacity of 345 guests. Two private dining rooms that each seat 10 guests are also available.

GILAS PILIPINAS VOWS: ‘WE WILL FIGHT UNTIL WE CAN NO LONGER FIGHT’
By Riera Mallari
Loyzaga, who passed away seven years ago at age 85, was the rst Filipino basketball to be inducted into the FIBA Hall of Fame, owing to his leadership on the court that led to the Philippines’ bronze-medal achievement in the 1954 World Championship in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
To this day, it remains the best nish ever by an Asian country in the world basketball tournament.
Fast forward to 2023, FilipinoAmerican Jordan Clarkson personi ed that pride of representing his grandmother’s country.
The Utah Jazz star in the NBA has
chosen to embrace the opportunity to represent his Filipino roots once again and compete in the 2023 FIBA World Cup alongside his fellow countrymen.
In a statement by the SBP after securing his nod, Clarkson “is not a Filipino for convenience but Filipino by blood.”
“He recognizes how his presence on the world stage will elevate Filipino pride while using his God-given athletic talents, humility, and style to play the game he loves on Philippine soil. While participating in this magnificent event, he’ll also pay homage to his late Lola Marcelina Tullao’s legacy,” the SBP said.
Once again, Clarkson is lending his NBA-level skills to a Philippine squad that is admittedly the underdogs against world-class contenders, but over owing with a big, ghting heart and love for the country.
Clarkson has always wanted to wear the ag on his chest, even before he became one of Utah’s vital cogs.
PUSO!
“I’m here in Manila, excited to play for Team Philippines. We’re goin’ to have a good time, [try to] get some wins” said Clarkson in a video post a few days before
their debut game against the Dominican Republic.
Despite a demanding schedule abroad, Kai Sotto has also made a short stop in the Philippines to represent the Philippines.
“I am always thankful for the support of my kababayan (countrymen) and it’s always exciting to play for our country,” said the 7’3” center Sotto, who is bidding to become the rst Filipino homegrown player to play in the NBA.
The rest of the Gilas squad—a unique mix of young guns and veterans in June Mar Fajardo, Japeth Aguilar, AJ Edu, Jamie Malonzo, Dwight Ramos, Kiefer Ravena, Rhenz Abando, Scottie Thompson, Jamie Malonzo, Roger Pogoy, and CJ Perez –provides an aura of pride and hope.
Gilas coach Chot Reyes was the same mentor when the chestthumping “Puso” became the motivational battlecry of an earlier Gilas version.
Bidding to book a berth in the Paris Olympics, Reyes said: “I think Puso is still very much present. It’s still the anchor of everything that we’re doing. We will always ght until we cannot ght anymore for our country. That is what ‘Laban Pilipinas, Puso’ is all about.” With Randy Caluag
WORLD CUP HOSTING
FOR a country where basketball is revered, known to be the world’s home of makeshift courts, three Filipino gentlemen who either played hoops or cheered from the courtside, nd themselves in the same corporate boardroom many years on strategizing their biggest coup yet: bringing over the world’s biggest basketball event, the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023, to the Philippines.
The idea was a slam dunk for PLDT Chairman and Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Chairman Emeritus Manuel V. Pangilinan, PLDT and Smart Communications President and CEO and SBP President Alfredo S. Panlilio, and PLDT Chief Leadership Transition Officer and SBP Vice President Ricky Vargas. It was a long-drawn-out battle for global recognition, but their deep love for the sport, and the Philippines, eventually won them out.
No stranger to the sport, Panlilio started playing basketball at a young age until he played for one conference under the Philippine Amateur
“I was already hired by PLDT, but I would still go to the other team’s games. I still sat on the opposite side. So, I guess they had no choice but to involve me in the team because I was cheering for the rival. That’s how I got involved,” he candidly shared.
For Pangilinan, it is no secret that his love for sports was heavily in uenced by his family, particularly his mother Soledad. “My mother was an avid fan of the San Beda team. She would watch games with the other mothers, who would prepare food for the team,” he recalled.
“We applied the best business practices to the federation. We xed the membership, corporatized, put in place sectoral representatives from the youth, the pros, women—all memorialized in the by-laws,” said Pangilinan, founding chairman of SBP. “I recall the nal terms of agreement was done on a table napkin, early morning in a hotel in Bangkok, where we almost lost our lives because we almost got hit by a car beating a
