PBBM: Get out of harm’s way Assures funds, food packs ready amid Mayon’s continued unrest

PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. urged residents living inside the danger zone of Mayon Volcano to heed the evacuation instructions and directives of their local government officials to ensure their safety.

“With the declaration of a state of calamity in Albay due to Mayon Volcano’s restiveness, we are reminding Bicolano residents to follow the recommendation and evacuation instructions of your local officials to ensure everyone’s safety,” the President said.

In a briefing in Albay on Saturday, Eugene Escobar, research division chief of the Albay Public Safety and Emergency Management Office (APSEMO), said at least 10,000 families or about 40,000 residents will be evacuated this weekend -- almost double the initial estimate.

Albay Gov. Edcel “Grex” Lagman

said Saturday around 3,000 families have already been evacuated after Alert Level 3 was raised due to Mayon’s volcanic activity.

Mr. Marcos said government funds and food packs are available for affected residents, citing the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s P114 million quick response fund, P5 million in standby fund, and 179,000 family food packs in Disaster Response Centers.

The DSWD has also readied a P67.8 million fund and 814,758 family food packs in other field offices to support the relief needs of areas affected by Mayon’s seismic activities, Mr. Marcos

said. The families to be evacuated are those living inside the 6-kilometer radius Permanent Danger Zone as well as the 7-kilometer radius of the volcano, covering the villages in Camalig, Daraga, Guinobatan, Legazpi, Ligao, Malilipot, Sto. Domingo and Tabaco.

Lagman said preemptive evacuation efforts started in Camalig and Guinobatan as they are the towns most vulnerable to the volcanic activity. The Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology released new photos of Mayon volcano’s summit on Saturday showing a new lava dome emerging. “A new summit lava dome in the Mayon Volcano Crater emerges as its pre-existing one has been pushed out in increments that formed rockfall in the first week of June 2023,” Phivolcs said.

Higher NLEX toll fees to take effect June 15

MOTORISTS will have to pay higher toll fees at the North Luzon Expressway starting Thursday, June 15. NLEX Corp., which manages the highway, said an additional P7 will be collected in the open system, while P0.36 per kilometer will be collected in the closed system.

The toll rate adjustment approved by the Toll Regulatory Board (TRB).

TYPHOON “Chedeng” may enhance the southwest monsoon or “habagat” as it maintained its strength while moving slowly over the Philippine Sea, the state weather bureau said Saturday.

Chedeng is unlikely to directly bring heavy rainfall over the country in the next three days.

But it mag bring gusty conditions while it affects the habagat in Metro Manila, Calabarzon, Mimaropa, Bicol Region, Visayas, Zambales, Bataan, Camiguin, and Dinagat Islands.

Chedeng may exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) between late evening today or early Monday, according to PAGASA.

“Chedeng is unlikely to directly bring heavy rainfall over the country in the next 3 days. However, the southwest monsoon may be enhanced by Chedeng and bring occasional rains over the western portions of Luzon and Visayas in the next 3 days,” PAGASA said.

The typhoon may also bring moderate to rough seas over the seaboards of extreme northern Luzon and the eastern seaboard of mainland northern Luzon.

additional fee of P7 will be charged against Class 1 vehicles, P17 for Class 2 vehicles and P19 for Class 3 vehicles.

Those traveling NLEX end-to-end between Metro Manila and Mabalacat City will pay an additional P33 for Class 1, P81 for Class 2 and P98 for Class 3 vehicles.

The open system covers cities Navotas, Valenzuela, and Caloocan in Metro Manila Manila to Marilao, Bulacan.

The closed system covers the portion between Bocaue, Bulacan and Sta. Ines, Mabalacat City, Pampanga, including Subic-Tipo. NLEX Corp. said the new rates were part of the authorized periodic adjustments due in 2012, 2014, 2018 and 2020.

This year’s adjustment is the fourth and last tranche of the 2012 and 2014 adjustments.

House aims to be prolific, focused—Barbers

THE House of Representatives under the leadership of Speaker Martin Romualdez will continue to be a prolific in terms of its primary task of legislation for the entire 19th Congress.

Surigao del Norte Rep. Robert

Ace Barbers, chairman of the House

Committee on Dangerous Drugs, said Romualdez had already set the tone during the First Regular Session with its high output of processed and approved measures. “The measures the House approved during the First Regular Session have both quality and quantity. Quality, because the chamber passed 33 out of the 42

priority bills of President Ferdinand ‘Bongbong’ Marcos Jr. as listed by the Legislative-Executive Development Advisory Council (LEDAC); and quantity, because the chamber was able to process 30 measures per session day, and this was 10 percent more than what the previous Congress did,” sai Barbers, a stalwart of the Nacionalista Party.

Diesel leads oil price hike at P1.50/liter

OIL firms are poised to implement a price hike next week, according to Unioil Petroleum Philippines.

Diesel prices may rise by P1.30 to P1.50 per liter while gasoline may go up by P1.10 to P1.30 per liter.

The forecasted oil price hike will wipe out the price cut implemented by the oil firms on June 6.

Oil companies earlier implemented a per liter decrease of P0.60 per liter for gasoline and kerosene and P0.30 per liter for diesel.

These price adjustments resulted in a year-to-date net decrease for diesel at P5.35 per liter and kerosene at P7.35 per liter.

Gasoline, on the other hand, has a net increase of P5.50 per liter.

PCG eyes drones to modernize the country’s maritime patrol

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is looking at sophisticated drones to boost its capabilities and strengthen the country’s border security.

PCG spokesman Rear Admiral Armando Balilo said using drones could save the unit time and fuel in the conduct of maritime patrols.

“If we can have our way, all districts of the Philippine Coast Guards should have at least one drone each,” Balilo said during the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

Balilo also narrated the PCG’s participation in a trilateral maritime

Solon asks DOH to help bring ASF vax to farmers

SENATOR Francis Tolentino has asked newly appointed Health Secretary Ted Herbosa to help livestock raisers combat African Swine Flu (ASF) and Avian Influenza Flu (AIF).

Tolentino told Herbosa to coordinate with the Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI) in delivering the much-needed vaccines to the hog and poultry raisers. In a radio interview, Tolentino regretted that existing policies limit the number of doses to be given to the farmers, not to mention the high costs of the medicines.

“Pwede po bang magtulungan ang Department of Health at Bureau of Animal Industry (BAI)? Para naman siguro etong kakulangan sa bakuna sa ating mga poultry products at sa ating mga baboy ay matulungan natin ang ating mga magsasaka,” Tolentino said.

“Marami po tayong mga magsasaka na nahihirapan sa pronouncement ng Bureau of Animal Industry na yung bakuna para sa swine flu eh 400 o 600 at may kamahalan,” he noted.

Tolentino recalled that during his recent visit to Pampanga, hog raisers and poultry operators told him they were willing to pay for the vaccines to sustain their source of livelihood. However, the volume of doses allowed by the BAI was insufficient to meet the farmers’ demands.

Herbosa vowed to address the problem, saying he would immediately coordinate with the Department of Agriculture (DA) to find out how they could collaborate to resolve the farmers’ concerns.

exercise with its counterparts in Japan and the United States, held in Mariveles, Bataan last June 1-7. He said during the “Kaagapay” drills, the PCG learned that the US Coast Guard has a large drone that can conduct surveillance over a large area of the ocean.

Japan’s Coast Guard was also using US-made surveillance drones, Balilo said.

“That’s what we don’t have, and when we saw it, we cannot help but by envious. It’s really a big thing,” Balilo said. While he admitted that modern drones were expensive, he asserted that it would still be cost-effective considering the aircraft’s potential to conduct unmanned surveillance over the high seas.

Balilo pointed out that the use of drones would make it easier to monitor the presence of foreign vessels and other unlawful maritime operations.

“That is when the drones come in very handy, Balilo stressed. Given its “limited budget,” the PCG has yet to include the planned purchase of drones in the list of equipment that would be procured amid the ongoing efforts to modernize the Coast Guard, he said.

Balilo disclosed that a number of countries have expressed interest to supply the PCG with modern drones, which he described as “the future of maritime patrol.

Lee tells new graduates to be businessmen

A PARTY-list congressman has unwrapped an entrepreneurial program which, according to him, would benefit all Filipinos across the country.

Addressing the graduates of the Sorsogon State University, Agri party-list Rep. Wilbert Lee said his program eyes setting up new businesses in every province

nationwide.

The Sorsogon-born lawmaker and founder of the LKY Group of Companies said he drew inspiration from the US TV show "Shark Tank,” and he would lead a group of investors that will be formed and would solicit business proposals from young entrepreneurs all over the country, including Sorsogon. "This is a program that will

benefit everyone, because each successful business will produce jobs and livelihood opportunities that can support Filipino families," Lee said.

The lawmaker, whose family businesses now employ over 3,000 Filipinos, added that one of his objectives was to convince young Filipinos to forget about going abroad and go into business right here in the Philippines.

Laguna mayors nix franchise renewal for local power firm

A GROUP of mayors from ten municipalities served by the First Laguna Electric Cooperative Inc. (FLECO) has urged legislators to reject a measure granting a new franchise to the utility due to its alleged unreasonably high power rates and poor services.

In a petition sent to the House of Representatives, the executives of the local government units (LGUs) from Cavinti, Famy, Kalayaan, Mabitac, Paete, Pagsanjan, Pakil, Pangil, Siniloan, and Sta. Technician blamed for Friday’s brownout at NAIA 3

A TECHNICIAN working for MServ, a subsidiary of Meralco, was tagged as a suspect in last Friday’s brownout that disrupted operations at the Ninoy Aquino International AirportTerminal 3 for more than 30 minutes.

“MServ was quick to identify that an oversight occurred when one of their personnel inadvertently left a testing cable attached to one of the electric equipment that caused the power interruption. Shortly after power went off, the generator sets kicked in causing minimal disruption

in airport processes,” said Manila International Airport Authority (MIAA) officer-in-charge Bryan Co.

According to Co, MServ was tapped to lead the full electrical audit of NAIA Terminal 3 as part of the improvement initiatives of the airport following the Labor Day eight-hour power interruption that affected the same terminal.

He said the firm’s technical team assured the airport authority and the public that the latest incident was “not equipment related but a

procedural lapse on the part of the MServ personnel.”

Co said the erring technician will be dealt with accordingly.

The airport management claimed there were no flight cancellation during the power interruption, but seven flights were delayed.

MIAA officials offered a public apology following the incident.

Senator Grace Poe said the airport management must exercise technical oversight so these human errors are minimized. Joel E. Zurbano

THE Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) has expressed confidence that extraction of the remaining industrial fuel from a sunken tanker in Oriental Mindoro would be ultimately completed by June 19.

The PCG’s target date of completion comes much earlier than earlier predictions by National Task Force on Oil Spill Management which said on June 1 said the siphoning operations might take 30 days to accomplish.

“Their operations are very efficient and I am convinced that 100 percent of the oil would be retrieved from the tanks by June 19,” PCG spokesman Read Admiral Armand Balilo said during Saturday’s New Forum in Quezon City.

Balilo was referring to the Malayan Towage and Salvage Corp. which was using remotely controlled mechanisms to collect the remaining oil from the tanks of the M/T Princess Empress which went down off Pola and Naujan towns in Oriental Mindoro last Feb. 28. .

The ill-starred vessel was reportedly carrying about 800,000 liters of industrial fuel oil when it developed engine trouble, giving rise to the massive environmental disaster.

Approximately 50 liters and 75 liters of oil have been recovered from COT No. 1 Starboard and COT No. 1 Port, respectively.

The amount of oil recovered from COT No. 2 Starboard and COT No. 2 Port is yet to be determined.

As of May 31, about 83.74 percent or 64.43 km. of the 79.33 km. of affected coastlines have been cleared of oil slicks, leaving only 16.26 percent or 12.89 km. awaiting the cleanup operations.

The ongoing operations have so far collected about 44,656.30 liters of oily water mixture; and 10,708 sacks, 997 drums, 119 pails, and 648 1-tonner bags of oil-contaminated sand/debris and oily waste from Calabarzon, Mimaropa, and Western Visayas.

Taguig-Makati land row seems far from over

n By JOEL E.

THE Taguig City government on Saturday appealed to Makati City officials to refrain from issuing statements in connection with their territorial dispute.

The Taguig officials, in a statement, said they were informed of recent social media posts claiming that the Taguig-Makati row over Fort Bonifacio Military Reservation areas, already decided with finality by the Supreme Court, was not yet over.

The posts asserted that Makati Mayor Abigail Binay spoke to First Lady Liza Araneta-Marcos and Supreme Court Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo regarding the case.” “Public officials should refrain from issuing inaccurate statements which serve to validate these false and misleading social media posts and result in erosion of confidence in the justice system of the country,” the statement read.

“Mayor Binay, a member of the bar and an officer of the court, should be the first to categorically disown such harmful rumors instead of fanning the same by issuing careless or imprecise statements,” it added.

Binay, according to Taguig, claimed that Makati received a document setting the case for oral arguments.

Pope resumes work from hospital room, thanks well-wishers

POPE Francis thanked those who have sent him get-well wishes following his hernia surgery, as the Vatican said Friday he was back at work from his hospital room.

“I sincerely appreciate the prayers and numerous expressions of closeness and affection received in the past few days,” the 86-year-old said on Twitter.

“I am praying for everyone, especially those who suffer. I ask you to keep me in your prayers,” he said.

Francis underwent a three-hour operation at the Gemelli hospital in Rome on Wednesday, and was said to be cheerful when he woke up.

The head of the Catholic Church had breakfast Friday before spending “most of the morning in an armchair” rather than in bed, the Vatican said. AFP

Trump took secret nuke docs, put national security at risk

FEDERAL prosecutors unsealed a wide-ranging indictment of Donald Trump on Friday, accusing the former US president of endangering national security by holding on to top secret nuclear and defense documents after leaving the White House.

The 76-year-old Trump, the frontrunner for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, took “hundreds” of classified government documents in cardboard boxes to his Mar-a-Lago residence in Florida, the 49-page charge sheet said.

Trump kept the files – which included records from the Pentagon, CIA and National Security Agency – unsecured at Mar-a-Lago, which regularly hosted large social events involving tens of thousands of guests over time, the indictment said. On at least two occasions, Trump showed classified documents on US military operations and plans to people not

cleared to see them at his Bedminster, New Jersey, golf club, it said.

Trump faces 37 separate counts in the indictment including 31 counts of “willful retention of national defense information” relating to specific documents. A conviction on each count carries up to 10 years in prison.

“We have one set of laws in this country, and they apply to everyone,” said Special Counsel Jack Smith, who brought the historic indictment against Trump, the first former US president ever to face federal criminal charges.

“Laws that protect national defense

information are critical to the safety and security of the United States, and they must be enforced,” Smith said, adding that he would seek to ensure that Trump receives a “speedy trial.”

Other charges facing the twice-impeached Trump include conspiracy to obstruct justice, punishable by up to 20 years in prison, withholding a document or record, which also carries a prison term of up to 20 years, and making false statements.

Trump’s personal aide, Walt Nauta, was named as a co-conspirator, charged with six counts for helping Trump hide documents, which were kept at various locations in Mar-a-Lago, according to the indictment, including a ballroom, a bathroom, Trump’s bedroom and a storage room.

“The classified documents Trump stored in the boxes included information regarding defense and weapons capabilities of both the United States and foreign

countries,” the indictment said.

Other records dealt with US nuclear programs and potential vulnerabilities of the United States and its allies to military attack along with plans for retaliation, it said.

“The unauthorized disclosure of these classified documents could put at risk the national security of the Untied States, foreign relations, the safety of the United States military, and human sources,” according to the indictment.

Trump is to appear in court in Miami at 3:00 pm (1900 GMT) on Tuesday for the first hearing in the case.

According to US media, the case will initially be handled by Aileen Cannon, 42, a Trump-appointed judge who made rulings favorable to the former president during a court review of documents seized in an August 2022 FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago.

A trial is not expected to begin for several months and there is nothing to prevent Trump from pursuing a second term in the White House while facing charges. AFP

Blinken reschedules visit to Beijing for June 18

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken will travel to China next week, rescheduling a visit that was canceled in February after a saga over a suspected surveillance balloon, US officials said Friday.

Blinken is expected to arrive in Beijing on June 18, the first trip by a top US diplomat to China since his predecessor Mike Pompeo in October 2018, US officials said on condition of anonymity.

The State Department has not officially announced his travel. National

Security Council spokesman John Kirby recently said the United States would announce travel by senior officials “in the near future” without giving details.

Presidents Joe Biden and Xi Jinping met in Bali in November and agreed to try to stop high tensions from soaring out of control, including by sending Blinken to Beijing.

Blinken abruptly canceled a trip scheduled in early February after the United States said it detected – and later shot down – a Chinese

surveillance balloon flying over the US mainland, drawing fury from US lawmakers and denials by Beijing.

But the two sides have more recently looked again to keep tensions in check including with an extensive, closed-door meeting between Biden’s national security advisor Jake Sullivan and top Chinese diplomat Wang Yi in Vienna last month.

Tensions have risen sharply between the world’s two largest economies in recent years, especially over

UK’s Boris Johnson quits as MP, claiming witch-hunt in parliament

BRITAIN’S former prime minister Boris Johnson angrily quit as a member of parliament on Friday, claiming he had been forced out in a stitch-up by his political opponents.

The 58-year-old populist politician has been under investigation by a cross-party committee about whether he repeatedly lied to parliament over COVID lockdown-breaking parties when he was in office.

In evidence earlier this year, he angrily insisted he had not.

But as the committee prepares to make public its findings, he said they had contacted him “making it clear... they are determined to use the proceedings against me to drive me out of parliament.”

The Privileges Committee, which has a majority of MPs from his own Conservative party, has powers to impose sanctions for misleading parliament, including suspension.

Ordinarily, suspension of more than 10 working days leads to a by-election in the MP’s constituency.

Johnson, though, pre-empted any finding – or the consequences of a humiliating fight to remain an MP in his Uxbridge and South Ruislip constituency in northwest London where he holds a slim majority of just over 7,000 – by quitting.

He denounced the committee, chaired by veteran opposition Labour MP Harriet Harman, as a “kangaroo court.”

“It is very sad to be leaving Parliament –at least for now – but above all I am bewildered and appalled that I can be forced out, anti-democratically... with such egregious bias,” he said.

The committee’s report, which has not been published, was “riddled with inaccuracies and reeks of prejudice,” he said, complaining he had “no formal ability to challenge anything they say.”

Their “purpose from the beginning has been to find me guilty, regardless of the facts,” he added.

Responding to the resignation, the Privileges Committee said Johnson “impugned the integrity of the House by his statement.”

The committee said it would meet on Monday to conclude its inquiry and would publish its report “promptly.”

The announcement came just hours after Johnson controversially rewarded his closest Brexit allies – and officials implicated in the “Partygate” saga – in his prime ministerial resignation honours list.

At the same time, his former culture secretary Nadine Dorries announced that she was quitting as an MP with immediate effect. AFP

“They are weak. Let’s let the doctors make their assessment,” he added.

The president earlier posted a photo on Twitter showing several adults, some dressed in military fatigues, tending to the children as they sat on tarps in the jungle. One rescuer held a bottle to the mouth of the smallest child, whom he held in his arms.

Innovator boosts SMBs’competence

REMOTE communications and IT provider

GoTo is keen on expanding its footprint in the Philippines to onboard small and medium businesses into the expanding scope of digital economy where hybrid and flex work arrangement is now a daily routine in the continuously evolving

workspace.

In the Philippines, or in any part of the world, SMBs are faced with the dilemma to sink, swim or adopt a communications and IT solution that befits their work environment, scope and short and long-term goals, says GoTo Asia Pacific vice president Lindsay Brown. He says the best option, always, is to give SMBs access to the most relevant tools and the best pricing in the market, which is what GoTo is all about.

“Supporting people out of office is certainly something that’s been in our DNA. We have a good network partner in the Philippines,” he says. GoTo’s solutions have been in market long before businesses start to digitize. Brown has been with GoTo for over 10 years, back when it was still a single, proprietary suites of solutions created by Citrix—a workspace software company that delivers technologies for better offsite and work-anywhere solutions.

offer what we call an all-in-one solution for unified business communications, and also IT service management. These worlds are sort of colliding, coming together in our product sets,” he says.

“So you may have heard of brands like GoToMeeting, GoToWebinar, GoToTraining and so on. We also acquired a cloud telephony solution which is now called GoConnect, which brings together, not only telephone but sort of think beyond the dial tone. And then over time, we also had some remote support and remote access products that were part of the company way back,” he says.

and in the Philippines, is GoTo IT service management tool called GoTo Resolve and GoTo Rescue. GoTo has over a thousand clients in SEA and a couple of customers in the Philippines who have become long-time partners.

Brown says tracking the footprint of GoTo in the Philippines, the solutions software company reported 65-percent revenue growth and 30 percent on customer growth on its IT support group portfolio, while channel growth was 40 percent, mostly focused on the ITSG portfolio.

Businesses, nowadays, are aware of what they want and have clear idea of what they need in terms of business

Small businesses in the Philippines, typically with around 30 to 50 employees, may not have the capability to have an IT professional as part of their organization. This where GoTo steps in to support a client’s IT network from mobile phone software needed to engage customers to desk top computers and even POS functions and back-end functions like storage and inventory.

“As the employer, you’re going to make sure that your employees are secure, their devices are up to scratch. That they’re all working, patched and operational with capabilities to engage customers with brands within the hybrid environment. This whole new way of customers engaging with the brands online is way more complex. But what we want to ensure is the safety of clients from risks and their business up and running secure,” Brown says.

Citrix’ merger with Log-

MeIn created a new set of GoTo product line offering the best packages to small and medium businesses, as well as large, entrenched companies. The software firm offers both communication products and remote IT products.

Brown has been with GoTo for over the busi nesses, compa products acceler these solu way, most of the products to tailor fit to the stream

“We know the past few years have accelerated adoption of various technologies, but certainly for us, these technologies have been around for quite some time. With LogMeIn, you can see already video conferencing and other solutions way, way back. We’ve evolved most of the products to tailor fit to the specific needs of businesses. So that’s how we can help companies streamline IT operations. But we’re quite unique in the respect that we

communications. Gone are the days of SMS messaging and client calls on the landline. Everything now, even communications, is mobile. Many companies are consolidating, but keeping everyone connected is a hurdle when lacking the tools required to support change.

Businesses that have clear knowledge of their purpose tend to negotiate their terms with suppliers, especially tech and software providers, the communications expert says.

“And what we’ve done is we’ve brought together these help desk technologies to IT service management, making it easy for organizations to manage and support employees and customers. And then we’ve also bought the business communications capabilities together to form now what is go to so we have that within sort of the single brand and the single housing,” Brown says. What is available in Southeast Asia,

Many SMBs are quite wary of software vendors and the set of disruptive products they offer, mainly due to their inability to stretch finances and bring the software they need to level up.

Many SMBs are struggling as hybrid work isn’t easy and security is a big challenge. They always think about ways where they can save money, which in many ways, is similar to other countries within Southeast Asia.

“There’s a lot of pressure on prices, inflation is really continuing to rise. So it’s getting more and more difficult for SMBs to do things. And so SMBs want to save money. They need to think about how they can consolidate the IT stack, save money there and think about how they can still continue to engage their customers the right way. And that’s definitely the proposition that GoTo provides is helping them consolidate, save and be able to engage with your employees through business communications and IT management and support,” Brown says.

During the ceremonial launch of the “Pag-IBIG Asenso Rider Raffle Promo,” foodpanda Logistics Philippines president Lhecks De Castro urged Ka-pandas to take advantage of the initiative.

“This is a good opportunity for our Ka-pandas and all delivery freelancers to realize the importance of securing their future and retirement,” he said, commending Pag-IBIG for recognizing and reaching out to the freelance delivery service sector.

Aside from Pag-IBIG, the leading online food and grocery platform has been working with the Philippine Health Insurance Corporation (PhilHealth), the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA), and the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) to ensure that Ka-pandas have access to affordable house financing, health insurance, and availment of other government services and benefits, despite being individual contractors.

CSR campaign expands into a livelihood project in urban and rural communities

INSURANCE firm Allianz PNB Life has expanded its Ride Safe campaign into a new program equipped with livelihood intervention component in partnership with global non-profit organization SOS Children’s Villages Philippines (SOS Philippines) and bike advocacy group Tambay Cycling Hub (Tambike), an independent bike repair shop in Pasig City.

“With the brilliant revolution in terms of cycling, we wanted to turn this into livelihood opportunities for Filipinos. The ability to make this happen is dependent on our partners, with Tambay Bike Hub extending training to our program participants and SOS Children’s Village providing the platform to reach out to those in need. We are happy that we extended our advocacy out of Metro Manila, with Ride Safe now in the provinces. The success of this program is also dependent on our participants who will work with bikes in their respective communities,” said Allianz PNB Life chief marketing officer Gino Riola. Ride Safe, which initially promotes biking as an environment-friendly form of transport, is now a program that provides participants with livelihood skills that will help them

support their families.

Through this entrepreneurship and bike-skills program, Allianz Ride Safe selected 9 SOS Children’s Village Family Strengthening program participants from Iloilo, Cebu, and Tacloban.

The participants underwent one week of training on bike maintenance and repair from instructors at Tambay Cycling Hub. The participants were also equipped with entrepreneurship and financial literacy mentoring to help them start their own small businesses. During training, the participants drafted a business plan and received a grant of P150,000 to set up a bike shop.

“With more Filipinos taking to the road on their bikes, there is a need for more skilled bike mechanics and bike stores. This program will help to grow the bike community and make the world a better, safer, more environment-friendly place,” said Tambay Cycling Hub president Kevin Skinker.

Allianz Ride Safe is an initiative under the Allianz PNB Life Kaagapay program that aims to teach financial literacy and aid families through microinsurance.

In 2021, the Ride Safe campaign won the CSR Initiative of the Year at the Insurance Asia Awards.

AS cold winds and rains gradually begin presenting in the Philippines, many Filipinos are eager to get a last hurrah on the beach and soak up some summer sun. Among the go-to beach destinations in the country is Zambales.

Luckily, beach-going just got better in Zambales as the Inflatable Island Beach Club, known as the biggest floating water park in Asia, has recently moved to a new site located at Bugallon Road, Olongapo, Zambales 2200, and the park’s place also got bigger, offering more activities and exciting attractions that cater to everyone’s preferences.

The floating park became Balinesethemed, and the new location was an ideal vacation spot for people of all ages. It will make the guests’ experiences memorable because the park can accommodate people looking for thrill and adventure and those who want to rest and relax.

The highlight of the Inflatable Island was its 4,500 square meters floating playground. Its size is comparable to 11 basketball courts placed side by side. This includes swings, trampolines, monkey bars, slides and wiggle bridges, fun walkway ladders, crazy ramps, and even a rock climb iceberg, and the most eye-catching was the 10-meter “High Tarzan” swing. For people who want to experience the thrill of trying extreme water activities and can’t get enough of the floating playground, then jet skiing, “Bandwagon,” ‘‘UFO,’’ and Banana boat rides are must-try.

Beachgoers of all ages can enjoy various activities that suit their preferences in Inflatable Island’s newest

The park also included enhanced amenities, amenities, such as stylish beach cabanas, spacious restrooms, and shower facilities, all created to make your visit more convenient and comfortable.

While adventurers want some adrenaline rush, others prefer silence and peace of calming sea waves. Fortunately for these mellow guests, the Inflatable Island did not

The power of play in developing children’s skills

ONE of the many significant things

I’ve learned during my childhood is that learning isn’t limited to the four corners of a classroom or within the pages of a book. Sometimes, there’s some wisdom in playing with our friends or our toys.

My daughter, a curious toddler at two, enjoys sensory toys like clay, Pop Its, Kinetic Sand, and slime. I love seeing her little hands build, explore, and discover new things from playing with her toys. It eventually piqued my interest in what she could learn from these items–starting with slime. I grew up watching Nickelodeon, which means I know how some people use slime

for pranks and other mischief.

I also bought some early versions that are primarily watery. Many slime product today are more intact and colorful and have many textures. And with that comes other numerous advatages for children

Basic chemistry for kids

Nowadays, slime kits don’t always come pre-made. Others include the ingredients required, like an activator and base, to make the sticky, slippery, stretchy stuff kids (and kids at heart) love. It then teaches kids a fun way to learn how to mix the correct amounts of components to get the ideal consistency for their slime. Through the process, kids can also understand how chemical reactions work, even with a simple explanation. Mixing the slime activator and base creates a nonNewtonian fluid that’s neither solid nor liquid. The fluid has no shape and can change its elasticity depending on how people use it. Slime can pass through a child’s fingers or bounce like a ball.

can also take a stroll down the beach, sipa delicious drink at the beach club bar, or simply soak up the sun on our comfortable Bali couches.

Inflatable Island also offers promos for family-gathering and celebrations, school tours, team-building for workmates, and even outing for companies

Slime stimulates the senses and sparks creativity

As mentioned, slime comes in different textures, depending on the ingredients people put in. More activator makes it firmer and less sticky while more base makes it stretchier, and a balance between the two usually results in something in the middle. However, some like to take things to the next level and add small toys or charms to change the consistency or add drops of food coloring to make it vibrant, thus giving the kids something new to experience.

Besides large batches of slime that kids can get their hands on, there are activities to get minds and bodies moving. For instance, there’s a giant hamster wheel in the middle of the room to test the kids’ endurance, a labyrinth game to test motor and cognitive skills, and a sandbox

ARTIST’S CORNER

MANY artists discovered over the years that their passion for creating awe-inspiring pieces could become lucrative and a stepping stone to achieving their primary life goals.

Edmar C. Casinillo a 19-year-old architecture student from Cagayan State University-Carig Campus, uses his creative talents to hone his skills in masterfully creating images to support his family and dreams.

“Since I was a child, I have loved the arts, I draw anime, and I also do lettering. But when I was already in Grade 8, that was the time that I started to draw portraits and paintings,” he shared.

From then, art became a vital part of Casinillo’s life because it reinforced his studies in architecture and became a source of income that allowed him to share his talents with others while

letting others appreciate what local young artists like him could do. He draws inspiration from his family as he hopes to support his family through the arts and eventually become a renowned artist and architect someday.

“If I am going to describe my art style, it is very unique compared to others. It’s not that easy, but it’s not that hard also to make an art like mine,” he said.

Casinillo has had his fair share of ups and downs in being an artist, but he doesn’t let that discourage him from doing what he loves. Instead, he encourages other artists like him to keep going and further their craft.

“Hard work and perseverance is the key to success. Don’t give up or quit–just enjoy making art because you’re a great artist,” he said.

The author’s daughter getting her hands on a batch of slime and vanilla, among other fragrances. The list goes on, so consumers have more than enough choices.

There’s no definitive way how to create and play with slime. It all boils down to what the kids prefer working with. But when they’ve finished making the slime, they can let their imaginations run wild and do what they will. Kids can stretch it into ropes, roll it into a ball, or create different shapes.

Children can accomplish and learn much from the stuff, so some parents consider it a must-have for their kids’ toy boxes.

In the meantime, those who want their kids to have a more holistic experience

filled with kinetic sand to encourage free play.

A create-your-own slime station is also available, where guests can choose the base, color, and smell and add charms to it later.

There’s also something for adults because they can also participate in fun games or get slimed–a la Nickelodeon style. Fair warning, the slime can stain your clothes and skin despite the protective gear, so it’s best to bring an extra pair of clothes. But other than that, you can cross getting shot with slime from a cannon off your bucket list. Book your visit at www.book. gootopia.com or visit the site for the walk-in price.

WITH a little more than a month before they embark on a historic journey in the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2023 in New Zealand, the Philippine National Women’s Football Team celebrated a new milestone with yet another leap in the world ranking.

The Filipinas, who are in the thick of their training camp in Sydney, improved from no. 49 to no. 46, their highest thus far in the global ratings among football-playing countries.

The progress came a month after the Filipinas pulled off a 2-1 upset of defending champion Vietnam in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Beating Vietnam, another qualifier for the World Cup, was an achievement for the Filipinas in their bracket although the Filipinas did not advance to the semifinal round of the 2023 SEA Games women’s football.

Vietnam eventually advanced to the finals, beating Myanmar, 2-0, for the gold medal.

“We wish for them to compete well in the World Cup. This is their first time,” said Philippine Football Federation president Mariano Araneta.

The road to glory in the FIFA Women’s World Cup has been long and winding for the Filipinas, who have been preparing and seeking improvements over the last two years.

Focusing on their preparations was made possible under former Australia manager Alen Stajcic, who took on the job as the Filipinas’

This was a better performance following their fifth-place finish in 2018.

WELL PREPARED

“They are preparing well. They just won’t go there to participate. They won’t go there just to be present. But they will get there to compete,”

Ramos, Eugenio top IRONKIDS

EUAN Ramos kicked his way to the top in the bike stage and went on to claim the boys’ crown while Zabelle Eugenio took charge in the opening swim leg to complete a wire-to-wire victory in the girls’ side of the IRONKIDS Philippines in Subic Bay yesterday. Ramos battled back from joint fifth in the swim with a big surge in the bike then stayed in control in the closing run to rule the premier 13-15 division in 24:34 with combined clockings of 04:53 (swim), 11:07 (bike) and 06:50 (run) over 250-m swim, 6-km bike and 2-km run distance.

The Baguio-based Ramos toppled pre-race favorite Darell Bada, whose rally in the run (6:39) proved short as he finished in 24:45, including 4:50 and 11:30 in the swim and bike stages, respectively, while Jyrehn Sales placed third in 25:24 from 04:48, 11:31 and 07:02 times in swim, bike and run, respectively.

Tikhon Tsinamdzgrishvili from Taguig came out fastest in the swim (04:34) but slowed down in the next two legs (12:15 and 08:41) and ended up 10th with 27:52 clocking in the event which ushered in the third staging of the Century Tuna IRONMAN Philippines and the Subic 70.3 Triathlon firing off today (Sunday).

Ramos’ victory came on the heels of his triumph in Azuela Cove in Davao last March but held over the

The Filipinas made it to the World Cup after engaging Chinese Taipei in a penalty shootout.

It didn’t matter if the Filipinas took a 2-0 defeat to Korea Republic in the semi-finals, they still became the first Filipino side to reach the global event.

They were joined by Southeast Asian rival, Vietnam, which scraped through to the knockout rounds as the second-best third-place team from the group stage, but were

defeated 3-1 by eventual champions China in the first knockout round.

But victories over Thailand and Chinese Taipei in the play-offs allowed Vietnam to join the Philippines in the World Cup finals.

A month after their last game in the 2023 Southeast Asian Games in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, members of a 29-member pool have begun converging in Sydney, as the Filipinas started their final preparations last Saturday for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Philippine Football Federation’s National Women’s Training Director Isabella Fernando said the team has gone through two long years of preparation, and she is excited to see the players at their best.

“They are just gonna be doing their best to earn that spot, and represent the flag as best as they can,” said Fernando.

The Filipinas will have their first game against the New Zealand Football Ferns in New Zealand on July 25 in Dunedin.

and run races.

Eugenio, from San Isidro, Rizal, bested Erin Burgos in 28:54, clocking 05:01 in the swim and sustaining her charge with 12:20 and 09:01 times in the bike and run legs. Burgos finished in 29:22 with times of 05:17, 12:22 and 09:00, while last year’s Vermosa winner Celinda Raagas settled for third in 30:04 (05:32-13:15-08:40).

Johan Marcelo and Fritzie Surima shared the 11-12 crowns disputed over the 200-m, 4-km bike and 1.5-km stretch, while Hans Samputon and Aliya Adre topped the 9-10 category (150-m swim, 4-km bike and 1.5-km

run) of the event also held to develop values like discipline, sportsmanship and respect for others and encourage the youngsters to live an active, healthy lifestyle.

Oliver Alingarog and Athena Masadao captured the 6-8 titles contested over the 100-m swim, 2-km bike and 1-km run distance.

Marcelo timed 20:01 with leg clocking of 02:54, 07:35 and 07:25 with Julio Tayag and Remsen Cayowet taking the next two spots in 20:30 and 21:55, respectively, while Surima posted a 20:30 clocking (02:52-08:09-06:54) to thwart Lauren Tan (21:21) and Victoria Banal (22:33).

PH Paralympic team to embark on massive talent hunt

INSPIRED by the recent showing of the Philippine Paralympic team in the Asean Para Games in Cambodia, Philippine Paralympic Committee (PPC) president Michael Barredo will embark on a massive recruitment of para-athletes nationwide.

“We’ve done well and improved pour performance, but there’s a lot of room for improvement,” said Barredo. ``If we can have a full complement of athletes in as many sports as possible, we might get more medals. Of course, this can’t be done overnight. It will take time to grow the expansion of our para athletes’ pool.”

The Filipino para-athletes had a total haul of 34 gold medals, 33 silver and 50 bronze medals after a

weeklong battle among differently abled athletes from 11 countries in Southeast Asia. It was a marked improvement from last year in Indonesia where the Philippines had 28 golds.

But the production was still far away from eventual overall champion Indonesia which collected 159 gold medals after sending more than 300 athletes while Thailand entered more to end up with 126 golds. The Philippine delegation had 172 athletes in 14 sports.

Vietnam placed third overall with 66 gold medals, 58 silvers and 77 bronzes and Malaysia fourth (50-38-35), with its simmers accounting for half of its total gold

production.

Barredo believes Team Philippines can perform better if it can send more athletes to Thailand which will be the next host in 2025.

``If we can have a full complement of athletes in as many sports as possible, we might get more medals. Of course, this can’t be done overnight. It will take time to grow the expansion of our para athletes’ pool,’’ said Barredo. Meanwhile, the para-athletics will have a victory party tonight at the Philsports in Pasig for its huge contributions to the country’s campaign, contributing a total of 10 gold medals, 10 silvers and 11 bronzes.

Samputon timed 23:10 (03:46-09:1407:47) to edge Phil Cayetano (23:27) and Chris Lacuna (23:39), while Adre clocked 21:59 (03:32-09:04-07:09); and Alingarog clocked 15:34 (02:38-05:06-05:04) and Masadao turned in a 15:40 clocking (01:5306:06-05:00).

The Olongapo Junior Trackers Multi Sport, on the other hand, turned back 2600 Tri in relay in 17:24 (02:59-06:57-05:08) with the latter submitting a 17:41 and TriClark placing third in 21:56, while Olongapo Torpedoes 2 ruled the 6-10 division in 18:23 (01:55-08:1305:31) over Olongapo Torpedoes (22:02).
