Social platform as he broke the bombshell news of a historic moment for the United States: the first time a sitting or former commander-in-chief has ever faced federal charges. There was no immediate confirmation from the Justice Department regarding Trump’s assertion.
A Trump attorney, Jim Trusty, told
CNN his client has been indicted on seven charges including the willful retention of documents in violation of the Espionage Act, making false statements, obstruction of justice and a count of conspiracy. Though the precise details of the charges were not immediately clear, people familiar with the matter told The New York Times the conspiracy charge was related to obstruction of justice. In his post, Trump, who is running for president again, said he has been summoned to a federal courthouse in Miami next Tuesday -- the day before his 77th birthday.
“I never thought it possible that such a thing could happen to a former President of the United States,” he wrote. His announcement came a day after US media said federal prosecutors had informed the former president’s lawyers that he is the target of the probe into his handling of classified documents.
He was already the first former or sitting president to be charged with a crime -- in his case over election-eve hush money payments to a porn star who said she had an affair with him. That indictment was handed down by Manhattan’s district attorney in March. In a statement after his initial online posts, the Trump campaign lashed out at what it called an “unprecedented abuse of power,” and called for the indictment to be thrown out. AFP

Four children wounded in knife attack near lake in French Alps
ANNECY, France—A Syrian refugee armed with a knife stabbed four preschool children and injured two adults by a lake in the French Alps on Thursday in an attack whose motive remains unclear.
The youngest victim in the quiet town of Annecy was just 22 months old and investigators are trying to understand the reasons for the frenzied rampage in a sunny public park at around 9:45 am (0745 GMT).
The attacker, dressed in black and carrying a blade around 10 centimeters (four inches) long, could be heard shouting “in the name of Jesus Christ” on a video taken by a bystander and seen by AFP.
“There’s no obvious terrorist motive,” local prosecutor Line Bonnet-Mathis told reporters in the lakeside town near the Swiss city of Geneva.
She said an investigation for attempted murder had been opened and that the suspect, named as Abdalmasih H, was not under the influence of drugs or alcohol.
Prime Minister Elisabeth Borne said the suspect was “not known by any intelligence service” and did not have “any history of psychiatric problems”. AFP
Indonesia Anak Krakatoa volcano erupts, spews huge ash column
JAKARTA—Indonesia’s Anak Krakatoa volcano erupted on Friday, belching a column of ash more than three kilometres into the sky, officials said.
The volcanic island emerged from the sea at the beginning of the last century from the crater formed after the 1883 eruption of Mount Krakatoa -- one of the deadliest and most destructive in history.
Anak Krakatoa, which means “Child of Krakatoa”, spewed thick ash over the strait that separates the islands of Java and Sumatra.
There were no immediate reports of damage or casualties after the eruption at 08:46 am (0146 GMT).
“The height of the eruption column was observed to be 3,000 metres (nearly 10,000 feet) above the summit,” Deny Mardiono, an official from the Krakatoa monitoring station, said in a press release.
“The ash column was observed to be grey to black with thick intensity to the southwest.”
He warned the public not to carry out activities within a fivekilometer (three-mile) radius of the volcano’s crater. AFP

therein the case number of the instant Application. The Commission will send the access link/s to the aforementioned hearing platform within five (5) working days prior to the scheduled hearings.
Cuba’s deputy foreign minister said the reports by The Wall Street Journal and CNN were “mendacious and unfounded.” The White House called them inaccurate.
The reports said Beijing and Havana have entered into a secret agreement for a Chinese electronic eavesdropping facility to be set up on the Caribbean island that could monitor communications across the southeastern United States.
The region includes the US Southern and Central Command headquarters, both in Florida.
China will pay Cuba “several billion dollars” to be able to construct the facility, the Journal said, citing unnamed US officials.
But Cuban Deputy Foreign Minister Carlos Fernandez de Cossio, reading a statement to journalists, called the reports “totally mendacious and unfounded.”
He said Cuba rejects all foreign military presence in Latin America, “including the many US bases and troops.” AFP
