Queen Camilla also gets crown in historic first coronation since 1953
CHARLES III was crowned monarch of the United Kingdom and 14 Commonwealth realms on Saturday at Britain’s first coronation for 70 years, during a ceremony steeped in a millennium of ritual and spectacle.
After a lifetime as heir to his late mother
Queen Elizabeth II, Charles, 74, became the oldest sovereign yet to be crowned at London’s Westminster Abbey.
At 12:02 pm (1102 GMT), Archbishop
of Canterbury Justin Welby placed the solid-gold St Edward’s Crown on Charles’s head as a sacred and ancient symbol of the monarch’s authority. Welby also crowned Charles’s wife,
Queen Camilla, 75.
Cries of “God Save the King” rang out from the 2,300-member congregation, which included foreign royalty and political leaders.
US President Joe Biden, represented at the abbey by First Lady Jill Biden, tweeted his congratulations and paid tribute to the “enduring friendship” between the United States and Britain. Several world leaders, including Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr., attended the ceremony.
“We underscore the thriving relationship between the Philippines and the United Kingdom, which has been promising in increasing trade, investment, and cultural exchanges for the Filipino people,” Mr. Marcos said after a royal reception hosted by King Charles Friday evening. Trumpet fanfares sounded along with gun salutes across Britain and beyond.
Returning to Buckingham Palace in the day’s second horse-drawn parade, the royal family appeared on the balcony to applause
and more chants of approbation from tens of thousands of well-wishers braving a spring downpour.
Some had camped out for days. A ceremonial fly-past was scaled down due to the weather.
Much of the Anglican service, in which Charles pledged “I come not to be served but to serve,” would have been recognizable to the 39 other monarchs crowned at Westminster Abbey since William the Conqueror in 1066. AFP

n By JOEL ZURBANO
PRESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Saturday expressed confidence that his administration is “one step closer” to attaining its goal of providing “safe, efficient, and sustainable” airport services in the country.
Marcos made the remark after his meeting with officials of New York-based Global Infrastructure Partners (GIP), one of the world’s largest infrastructure investors, in London.
“Our vision for safe, efficient, and sustainable airports in the Philippines is one step closer to reality,” he said in a Facebook post.
Mr. Marcos had the chance to tour London Gatwick Airport, which is comanaged by GIP.
“This learning experience has provided us with valuable insights as to how we can develop the truly world-class airports we aspire to build in the Philippines,” he said.
“We had a productive meeting with Global Infrastructure Partners, the company behind Gatwick Airport’s exceptional infrastructure,

All Pinoys fleeing Sudan war may be home next week—DFA
THE Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) is optimistic that all Filipinos trapped in the fighting in Sudan could be repatriated by next week.
Meanwhile, about 320 Philippine nationals fleeing Sudan are currently in safe shelters and hotels in Egypt, awaiting their flights to Manila. Foreign Affairs Undersecretary for Migrant Affairs Jose de Vega said in an interview with ABS-CBN. He added that there were no more Filipinos at the Egypt-Sudan border. “Our
goal is they will be home by next week,” De Vega said.
He said more than 50 Filipinos from Port Sudan have already reached Saudi Arabia.
“We are thankful to Saudi Arabia. They were the ones who sent military vessels to evacuate foreign nationals wishing to leave Sudan, De Vega said.
DILG taps business to boost gov’t’s anti-drug campaign
n By JOEL E. ZURBANO
THE Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) has announced it will work closely with big companies in the country to involve the private sector in the anti-drug campaign.
“We are coordinating with the different employers in the Philippines the big ones. And we are going to sign agreements with them as part of the BIDA Program,” said DILG secretary Benjamin Abalos Jr., referring to the government’s revitalized anti-drug drive dubbed “Buhay Ingatan, Droga’y Ayawan (BIDA).”
Abalos said private companies will have their own anti-drug programs and policies
that are in line with the BIDA Program’s goals. An example, he said, is the conduct of random drug testing of employees.
“If one is found to be positive we will let the company handle the matter and enforce appropriate sanctions such as suspension, dismissal, or they can order their employee to undergo rehabilitation,” said the DILG chief.
“Just imagine if all companies do this, our country will definitely be clean and we will win the fight against drugs,” he added.
According to Abalos, the “BIDA Workplace” was inspired by the good collaboration between the government and the private sector during the pandemic, particularly in the implementation of COVID-19 testing.
Makati gov’t forges tie-up with CSMC
THE Makati City government has signed an agreement with the Cardinal Santos Medical Center (CSMC) for the accommodation of patients referred by the Ospital ng Makati (OsMak) who needed specialized care and services.
Mayor Abigail Binay said the partnership would allow for smoother and faster patient transfers between the two hospitals, allowing her constituents to receive more comprehensive healthcare.
“Our partnership with CSMC will benefit Makatizens immensely. It provides them easy access to top-tier healthcare services and a wider range of specialists. I want to ensure that quality healthcare is accessible for anyone who needs it—regardless of their
ability to pay,” Binay said.
The mayor explained that while OsMak is an ISO-certified tertiary-level hospital, it still has limitations regarding medical services on its ancillary and diagnostic services. She said that the partnership with CSMC will facilitate continuity of care and ensure the best possible health outcomes for patients from OSMak.
Under the agreement, the patients must first be assessed and treated at OsMak before being referred to CSMC. OsMak will then send an LOA to CSMC detailing the patient’s medical needs. Residents can only be treated for specified medical services at CSMC and will be referred to OsMak for follow-up care.

According to De Vega, at least 179 Filipinos have been repatriated from Sudan, leaving an estimated 100 more still trying to find a way out of the strife-torn country.
“But we are making a last call. We appeal to them to contact us. This may be their last chance to get out of harm’s way,” De Vega said, He disclosed that two buses were scheduled to pick up the Filipinos and bring them to Port Sudan.
However, he said there are still at least 100 Filipinos who remain in Sudan, and that they are making a "last call."
De Vega also said overseas Filipino work-
ers who wish to find jobs in other countries may no longer be repatriated if they have working visas in their chosen countries.
Hundreds have reportedly died in nearly three weeks of fighting between forces loyal to Sudan's de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the regular army, and his former deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
There were several attempts to forge a truce between the warring camps since the war broke out last April 15, so far none held on.

Speaker hails PBBM’s successful US visit
n By MARICEL V. CRUZ
SPEAKER Ferdinand Martin Romualdez
on Saturday hailed President Ferdinand Marcos, Jr.’s successful five-day official visit to the United States that generated, among others, billions of dollars in investment pledges seen to create thousands of jobs for Filipinos. In his post-visit report, the President said he will return to the Philippines with over US 1.3 billion in investment pledges that have the potentials to create around 6,700 new jobs for Filipinos who need not find employment abroad. “I have personally witnessed how the
President tirelessly pursued his mission to promote the interest of the Philippines. He wasted no time and seized all opportunities to engage with US government officials and key business leaders to secure meaningful benefits for our people,” Romualdez said.
Romualdez was among the Filipino delegation that accompanied President Marcos in his various engagements during the fiveday official visit to the US.
“I am confident the lives of many of our Filipino brothers would soon be touched and transformed by the fruits of his official visit to the US,” Romualdez said.
“These tangible benefits are won by our President’s indefatigable work coupled with
his honesty and the sincerity of his intention to enhance Philippine-US relations for the good of both countries,” he added.
President Marcos noted that during his engagements with numerous American business groups, he was able to entice many of them to expand their operations or create new ventures in the Philippines. He said that when realized, these investments from the US will support our country’s economic recovery efforts and further strengthen the foundations of our economic environment.
“We expect even more investment that will materialize once these companies firm up their plans,” President Marcos added.
Solon eyes passage of barangay health workers measure
A PARTY-list congressman on Saturday appealed to fellow legislators to support a measure providing higher compensation and better benefits for barangay health workers (BHWs) “who are in the forefront of delivering healthcare services in communities.”
"While our medical practitioners and other who belong to the health care profession are protected by laws and receive proper compensation for their services, our Barangay Health Workers who provide accessible and quality medical assistance to our constituents in the grassroots do not enjoy the same rights and protection from the law," said Rep. Ray Reyes of the AnaKalusugan party-list.

BI rescues10 women from cyber sex ring
THE Bureau of Immigration (BI) has rescued 10 women believed victims of human trafficking who were about to depart for Singapore where they would work as sexual entertainers.
BI Commissioner Norman Tansingco said the 10 women, 20 to 30 years old, were intercepted moments before they could board a Cebu Pacific flight to Singapore.
“We received information earlier this month from the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking (IACAT) that these women were being trafficked abroad and were recruited as entertainers, but will end up as sex workers,” Tansingco said.
He said that upon receipt of the information, they immediately included the group in their monitoring records to be able to intercept them.
The BI chief said after including the information from IACAT on their records, they also received information from the Office of Senator Risa Hontiveros on the women, further validating their suspicions on their actual purpose of travel.
The women claimed that they were traveling as tourists with friends. However, a closer inspection of their records revealed valid working permits as entertainers in Singapore. Vito Barcelo
Reyes, vice chair of the House Committee on Health, was referring to the proposed Magna Carta of Barangay Health Workers (BHWs) which provides higher pay and other benefits, including a monthly honoraria of not less than P3,000.
Reyes lamented how the BHWs did not enjoy the same rights and protection from the law unlike other professionals in the healthcare sector.
"The health and well-being of all is an inalienable right granted to all citizens of our country and we must ensure quality of health care is readily available to all," he added.
Reyes is one of the principal authors of the measure -- House Bill 1829 -- which seeks to empower BHWs and provide them with additional health benefits, compensation, and incentives. The bill under consolidated HB 6557 has already been approved at the lower house. Maricel V. Cruz

US, Saudi Arabia say Sudan warring forces to start talks
THE US and Saudi governments confirmed direct talks between the warring Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces would start in Jeddah on Saturday, even as fighting showed little signs of abating in the Sudanese capital.
A joint US-Saudi statement welcomed the “start of pre-negotiation talks” and urged sustained global support to quell fighting.
“The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and the United States urge both parties to take in consideration the interests of the Sudanese nation and itspeople and actively engage in the talks toward a ceasefire and end to the conflict,” the statement said.
Hundreds have died in nearly three weeks of fighting between forces aligned with Sudan’s de facto leader Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, who leads the regular army, and his deputy-turned-rival Mohamed Hamdan Daglo,
who commands the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF). Multiple truces have been reached since the fighting erupted on April 15, but none has been respected.
The army confirmed late Friday it had sent envoys to Saudi Arabia to discuss “details of the truce in the process of being extended” with its paramilitary foes.
Burhan had given his backing to a seven-day ceasefire announced by South Sudan on Wednesday, but early on Friday the RSF said they were extending by three days a previous truce brokered under US-Saudi mediation.
The US-Saudi statement noted the efforts of other countries and organizations
behind this weekend’s talks, including Britain, the United Arab Emirates, the League of Arab States, the African Union and other groups.
In Khartoum, witnesses reported continued air strikes and explosions on Friday, including near the airport.
The fighting raged despite a threat of sanctions from US President Joe Biden against those responsible for “threatening the peace, security, and stability of Sudan” and “undermining Sudan’s democratic transition.”
The north African country suffered decades of sanctions during the rule of autocrat Omar al-Bashir, ousted in a palace coup in 2019 following mass street protests.
“The violence taking place in Sudan is a tragedy – and it is a betrayal of the Sudanese people’s clear demand for civilian government and a transition to democracy. It must end,” Biden said.

Aftershocks shake Japan as quake kills one
AFTERSHOCKS shook Japan a day after a powerful earthquake left at least one person dead, with officials assessing damage Saturday from the jolt that destroyed several buildings.
The 6.5 magnitude quake hit the central Ishikawa region mid-afternoon on Friday at a depth of 12 kilometers (seven miles), according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.
More than 50 aftershocks, some of them strong, had occurred by Saturday morning, the agency said, as it warned that heavy rain could trigger landslides in the area.
At least 29 people had been injured, Japan’s disaster management agency said Saturday.
“Our staff are out checking damage from the quake,” an official from Suzu in Ishikawa prefecture, the hardest-hit city, told AFP.
Two people trapped inside destroyed buildings were rescued, he said, and around 50 people had moved to evacuation centres set up at schools and the city hall.
TV footage showed a grocery shop strewn with broken wine bottles and other products that had fallen from shelves.
Some residents were seen clearing rubble in the rain after their wooden houses were partially destroyed.
“I asked a carpenter for a makeshift fix of the house, and the house is now covered with a blue tarp to protect it from rainwater,” one man told public broadcaster NHK.
Water outages affected more than three dozen households in Suzu, officials said Saturday, adding that the city had provided temporarypublic supplies after running water had turned brown in parts of the region.
The quake registered an upper six on the Japanese Shindo seismic scale, which goes up to a maximum of seven.

The UN children’s agency, UNICEF, warned Friday that “the situation in Sudan has become fatal for a frighteningly large number of children.”
Spokesman James Elder said UNICEF had received reports from a trusted partner – not yet independently verified by the United Nations – that 190 children were killed and 1,700 wounded during the conflict’s first 11 days.
He said the figures had been gathered from health facilities in Khartoum and Darfur since April 15, meaning that they only cover children who actually made it to facilities in those areas.
“The reality is likely to be much worse,” Elder said.
Aid workers have struggled to get much-needed supplies to areas hit by violence. AFP
Earthquakes are common in Japan, which sits on the Pacific “Ring of Fire,” an arc of intense seismic activity that stretches through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.
The country has strict construction regulations intended to ensure buildings can withstand strong quakes and routinely holds emergency drills to prepare for a major jolt.
A 6.9 magnitude quake struck a fishing village in the same region in 2007, injuring hundreds and damaging more than 200 buildings on the Noto peninsula – a scenic area on the Sea of Japan coast.

UK police drew condemnation after arresting leading members of the anti-monarchy group Republic as they prepared to protest along the route of a procession for the coronation of King Charles III on Saturday.
A US F-16 fighter jet crashed in a farming area south of Seoul during a training exercise on Saturday, said the US military, but appeared to have caused no casualties or property damage.
The jet’s pilot safely ejected before the crash and was taken to the nearest hospital, the US Air Force said in a statement.
“An F-16 Fighting Falcon assigned to the 8th Fighter Wing crashed in an agricultural area near Osan Air Base at about 9:45 am” in Gyeonggi province, the statement said.
The crash occurred during a routine training exercise, it said, adding an investigation was underway.
The local fire department was dispatched to the crash site and extinguished the fire, Gyeonggi Governor Kim Dong-yeon said on his Twitter account.
Local media said the crash involved no casualties or damage as it took place in a rural area.
“There are no civilian homes nearby the crash, causing no further damage (other than the jet),” a police official was quoted as saying by the Yonhap news agency.

Officers from London’s Metropolitan Police force detained six organisers from the pressure group and seized hundreds of their placards, Republic said, just hours before Charles’s crowning.
Republic chief executive Graham Smith was one of those held before the group had a chance to wave placards declaring “Not my king.”
Some onlookers nearby shouted “free Graham Smith” but others shouted “God save the king” and waved UK flags.
“They won’t tell us why they’ve arrested them or where they’re being held,” a Republic activist told AFP in London’s Trafalgar Square.
The detentions prompted immediate criticism from Human Rights Watch,

which called the arrests “incredibly alarming.”
“This is something you would expect to see in Moscow, not London,” the rights organization’s UK Director, Yasmine Ahmed, said in a statement.
“Peaceful protests allow individuals to hold those in power to account– something the UK government seems increasingly averse to.”
The arrests come just days after UK police forces were controversially granted new anti-protest powers by the government under a new law rushed through this week.
A camera crew from the group Alliance of European Republican Movements was at the scene and asked a senior police officer why the group had been detained.
“They’re under arrest. End of,” the officer told them, walking off, according to footage posted by the group on Twitter.
On its Twitter feed, Republic confirmed the arrests and seizure of placards. “Is

US President Joe Biden, who at age 80 is seeking a second term in 2024, said in an interview broadcast Friday that his advanced age has brought him abundant wisdom.
“I have acquired a hell of a lot of wisdom and know more than the vast majority of people,” he told a reporter from MSNBC, the first interview he’s given to the press since officially launching his campaign last week.
“I’m more experienced than anybody that’s ever run for the office. And I think I’ve proven myself to be honorable as well as also effective,” said Biden, a Democrat who would be 86 at the end of a second term. Biden has so far rarely addressed his age, which is considered to be his main handicap among voters, except for the occasional joke.

Sri Lanka prisoners freed to mark holiday
SRI Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe ordered the early release of nearly 1,000 prisoners to mark the island’s main Buddhist holiday, the prisons chief said Saturday.
The pardons on Vesak Day, which commemorates the Buddha’s birth, enlightenment and death, applied only to those convicted of minor offences, said Commissioner-General Thushara Upuldeniya.
“We released these inmates from 28 prisons across the country,” Upuldeniya told AFP of the Friday evening releases. “There were 982 men and six women who walked free.”
The cash-strapped South Asian nation is holding official Vesak celebrations for the first time in five years. Festivities were cancelled in 2019 after Islamic extremists carried out Easter Sunday suicide bombings that claimed 279 lives at churches and hotels in the capital Colombo. Official events marking the holiday were then put on hold by the COVID-19 pandemic and last year’s economic crisis, the worst since independence from Britain in 1948. AFP

Famous couturier ventures into handicraft designs
HIGH fashion designer Ivan Raborar of Ivan Raborar Couture expanded his brand of artistry to interior and handicraft designing.
Collaborating with the government is a new thing for the 39-year-old designer. The Department of Tourism was the first to notice that his talent is not limited to creating beautiful gowns and wearables. He was tapped by the agency to redecorate its regional office in Koronadal City.
“That was a surprise. I never thought I would be seen in a different light. But I took the offer as a challenge, not only to test my limits, but also to expand my boundaries as an artist. I believe we can still grow and develop new capacities no matter what age we are and how far we have journeyed in our careers. There’s so much I still want to discover for myself and with myself,” he said.
“They [DOT] have given me a big task—to create iconic pieces showing the Mindanaoan culture. I have never before created useful things except for clothes and fashion accents. Going beyond what I usually do is kind of exciting because you get to meet normal people who depend on you and look up to you as a mentor,” he added, referring to a group of handicraft women he met through the Department of Trade and Industry.
In his search for suppliers, Raborar bumped into the DTI looking for materials for the first few handicrafts he intended to use to adorn the receiving area of the DOT regional office. This marked the start of another engagement with a government office, this time creating a lasting heritage of designs and helping the women of Lake Sebu, through the intervention of DTI Region 12, innovate and keep abreast of local and global trends.
Raborar intends to create a chandelier made of woven bamboo in the shape of small tuna-like fishes, one of the iconic pieces he has initially set to create with the Kestubong Women’s Association Agrarian Reform Beneficiaries (KeWARB)—a group of amazing women handicraft weavers based in Lake Sebu.
The engagement with the DTI involves a marketing partnership agreement with KeWARB, forged under the DTI Comprehensive Agrarian
handicraft designs to everyday details seen in South Cotabato—things that are taken for granted but are part of and dominate the daily scene in the streets, at home and other familiar places from where he grew up.
He started redesigning KeWARB’s lampshades with a fresh look, incorporating daily facets of life in the otherwise humdrum and age-old blueprint the group has been repeatedly doing for ages.
Fresh Depot opens cold storage unit in the north

not half, of their production means that farmers will soon be able to invest in other products that can create a virtuous cycle in their prosperity. Digitally tracking the cold storage usage means we can also help the government understand how they can better support farmers,” she said.
With Fresh Depot’s innovative pilot unit, farmers and traders can now efficiently store their surplus produce and preserve its freshness until it reaches the market. This groundbreaking solution aims to significantly reduce food wastage and enhance the food supply chain in the Philippines.
Moreover, Fresh Depot seeks to provide value-adding services, such as establishing a comprehensive database that the government can leverage to enhance their agricultural initiatives.
Reform Program where Raborar will be providing KeWARB with exclusive product designs for mass production. He will buy the finished products at fair market price, and these products will be incorporated in his couture and creative works.
The renowned local couturier and creative design consultant of the province has many affiliations that can get him to supply a string of local hotels in South Cotabato, as he also seeks to expand his footprint to the rest of the country. Export is an ambitious goal he plans for the long term.

Product designing was an alien concept to Rabonar until KeWARB. It has taken a whole new experience on how the designer sees artistry and aesthetics in everyday living. This coming July, Rabonar plans to join the T’nalak Festival to showcase the collaborative pieces he created with the amazing skills of KeWARB weavers.
“I am raring for the public launch of this collaboration with KeWARB and the DTI. In the upcoming T’nalak Festival we will show how Lake Cebu handicraft weavers have innovated as they have now the means to transform native handicrafts into modern utilitarian pieces but keeping attuned to the cultural ethnicity of Mindanaoan art,” he said. His work will also benefit a host of indigenous women who are members of KeWARB. Raborar said the indigenous people have a special spot in his heart as they are the weavers of native fabrics he used for his couture collection. He uses indigenous fabrics like T’nalak, T’boli, Maguindanaoan and B’laan textiles, and does the bead working and ethnic embroideries as well.
Raborar has been designing clothes since he was in high school. For somebody who has not had any formal education in sewing clothes, Ragonar considered his talent innate. His exposure to the craft began at an early age. His father was a known seamster in their municipality in Koronadal, South Cotabato and his mother was an equally competent seamstress. Everyone else in his family knows how to sew but it was only him who seriously considered sewing as a profession, making use of the talent that was passed on

Animal nutrition expert gathers industry partners to introduce new feeds technology
Cargill Philippines along with the National Federation of Hog Farmers, Inc (NatFed) and Pork Producers Federation of the Philippines (ProPork) band together to deliver new animal nutrition solutions in a summit held recently at Solaire Resort and Casino.
Given the ongoing outbreak of African swine fever (ASF), the summit, aptly themed “Feeding the Future,” focused on animal nutrition, disease management, and digital technologies.
“At the heart of Cargill’s efforts is the goal to help farmers thrive amidst challenges like ASF. We
empower Filipino farmers with tailored solutions and knowledge to raise pigs because healthy animals perform better,” said Cargill Philippines country president Sonny Catacutan. “It is our belief that the nutrition provided to animals during the early stages of their life significantly impacts their health, growth, and viability. As a growth partner, we are committed to enabling farmers and providing them with the tools to get the foundation right to improve animal well-being and farm productivity,” he added. Among the solutions highlighted
at the summit is Neopigg, a Cargill global brand for young animal nutrition, which incorporates Cargill technologies that ensure 80 percent Class AB piglets at 70 days, resulting in increased profitability. Neopigg nutrition solutions are designed to help piglets start strong, power through weaning, and transition smoothly into the grower-finisher phase.

Consult your doctor about vaccination programs to help you achieve your travel plans
By Gabriella Andrea C. Tresvalles
AFTER two years of lockdown, people can now catch up with their loved ones and return to doing what they enjoyed before. However, COVID-19 cases are on the rise again, prompting Filipinos to postpone many of their travel plans.
Independent monitoring group OCTA Research reported a seven-day positivity rate of 18.8 percent in the National Capital Region (NCR) as of last Monday, May 1, 2023. It’s higher than the 7.1 percent compared to the 11.7 percent reported last April 24, 2023.
The unexpected increase in the positivity rate worries people who plan on attending their favorite artists’ concerts and festivals and especially those who will travel locally or abroad. Hence, the need for annual check-ups and flu vaccination doses before going away on planned trips or vacations.

vaccine myths
for an ‘Unstoppable 2023’
Regardless of age, vaccines will help boost a body’s immune system against known diseases
Last Thursday, April 27, the GSK Philippines launched its Unstoppable 2023 campaign via Zoom with speakers Doctor Jing Velasco-Aro, Vaccine Medical Head of GSK Philippines, and Rafael Dionisio, travel expert and co-founder of Make A Difference (MAD) Travel. The Unstoppable 2023 Campaign encourages everyone to get their yearly dose of flu vaccine.
The media launch started with a game called Two Truths and One Lie, wherein participants will be guessing the lie among the three statements presented. The game’s topic was debunking vaccine myths, which Velasco-Aro eventually discussed. Velasco-Aro clarified these vaccine myths, including the common one that vaccines are exclusive for children.
“It’s not just for children. Some of us
The Gut Guide: Key things to know about gut health
SCHOOL is out, and kids can get some time off from all their usual routines, right?
Unfortunately, the more kids are free to play and relax over the break, the harder it is for parents to keep their kids’ health on track. Families must be in “Todo Tatag” shape to enjoy a worry-free summer, and it all starts in the gut.
While several ways lead to a healthy body, 70 percent of the body’s immunity comes from the gut. Scientific studies often refer to the gut as the body’s “second brain” as it uses the same chemical signals that alert the brain when something is wrong.
“Our gut is home to trillions of bacteria and microbes that not just digest food and absorb nutrients, but also are in direct contact with nerve and immune cells, greatly influencing one’s mood, behavior, and of course, overall health,” said J Ann Mirasol from the makers of ErcefloraKiddie.
To make it easy for parents to protect their kids’ gut health, Erceflora Kiddie recently mounted the Todo TatagPlayground that taught three significant concepts in strengthening one’s immunity:
A healthy gut helps absorb the most nutrients
The food we eat affects the diversity of bacteria in the gut, so it’s relevant to eat the right kinds of food to boost immunity. To help maximize what we get from our food, probiotics, like Erceflora Kiddie, help our gut’s digestion by converting the nutrients from our food into simpler forms that are easier to digest. It allows our bodies to absorb the necessary proteins, vitamins, and nutrients to improve our gut health.
A healthy gut helps protect the body from bad bacteria
Not all bacteria are bad, but bad bacteria can cause many disorders in the body. It commonly comes in belly aches and diarrhea, so it’s relevant to have a good balance of good and bad bacteria in the gut.
An easy way to bring balance is through the active component of Erceflora Kiddie, bacillus clausii. This good bacteria multiplies when it reaches the gut, which inhibits and replaces the bad bacteria in it, allowing your body to recover from the cause of the gut disorder.
A healthy gut improves the overall health of the body
Our body is constantly exposed to possible causes of sickness and disorders, and building strong immunity can be challenging.
Handwashing is now known as the body’s first line of defense by lowering the risk of germs entering the body through our hands. But many other things can affect our intestinal well-being –travel, stress, and other medications.
Probiotics enhance the immune system by replenishing good bacteria your body might have lost to protect the gut from these factors. The replenished good bacteria then support the integrity of our
gut’s walls to prevent the spread of toxins throughout the body.
According to Mirasol, “When it comes to health, gut health isn’t always the first thing that comes to mind for most parents. However, with the gut playing a large role in the whole body’s immune system, it is key to make sure that kids stay on track with their health no matter what season it is.”
Protecting kids’ gut health may seem like a big task, but Erceflora Kiddie is here to help parents to build a healthy household.
Erceflora Kiddie is a probiotic drink that helps balance the gut by allowing it to absorb nutrients better while resisting harmful bacteria, which helps prevent kids from getting an upset stomach. Since Erceflora Kiddie is tasteless and odorless, it’s easy for kids to take it on its own or mix it with food or drink without much fuss. This season, parents can also help more families and more children live a healthier life. When you buy ErcefloraKiddie, a portion of the sale will support Batang Matatag—a movement initiated by Save the Children Philippines and Erceflora Kiddie to improve
Besides getting vaccinated, adhere to other health regulations, like wearing face masks, to avoid catching the flu and other communicable illnesses
only associate vaccination [as] ‘para sa mga bata lang yan,’ but vaccinations are also needed by adults,” Velasco-Aro said. Young adults and teenagers, who have much to experience this 2023 with the return of the Manila concert scene and other outdoor or social activities are, receive much encouragement to get vaccinated and frequently boost their shots for best results.
She also added that people should keep up with their doses yearly, especially before their travel or hangouts, to keep them from catching the flu. Although it is usually at its peak between June to November, people are susceptible to it all year round. When getting vaccinated, people should consider how it’ll benefit them. Besides its health advantages, interested individuals should also determine which ones are accessible and affordable yet effective.
Dionisio also shared how he keeps himself healthy and recovering from sickness, especially the flu.
“One thing that comes to mind is that when I’m feeling sick—what I tend to do is drink and eat a lot of healthy [items], and then, I close my tech so that I’ll fall asleep,” he said.
Lastly, Velasco-Aro reminds people to get their flu vaccinations as early as now to avoid spreading other viruses and diseases— being the consideration to get one.
“Think about the overall benefits of the flu vaccine so that you will be able to have your Unstoppable 2023,” the doctor said. As the popular saying goes, “Prevention is better than a cure.” Vaccines are an ideal source of prevention from significant diseases that could boost people’s immunity and let them live their lives to the fullest.
ARTIST’S CORNER
WORDS have a way of conveying emotion efficiently even if people use elements of speech and artistic forms to express themselves. As an introverted writer from a college in Sampaloc, Manila, Cholo Sanchez (not his real name), found solace in poetry to share his innermost thoughts and emotions.
“I’m not too comfortable with talking to others about how I feel because I sometimes worry they won’t understand
me. But with poetry, I manage to control and understand my emotions,” he said.
Sanchez prefers writing in Filipino, only sharing bits and pieces of his work every now and then, online or through other platforms. “Whenever I hold the pen, I feel a release and let the words flow through me. I just mostly rhyme words when I can and let the feeling of relief wash over me,” Sanchez explained.

PHNOM PENH—
Princess Cabuya set a new world record for the second time in three days after she and Mark Julius Rodelas claimed two gold medals for the Philippines on Saturday in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games Obstacle Sports Competitions here.
Cabuya, a full-time athlete, did the feat after she conquered the 100-meter women’s individual action in 32.732 seconds, almost three seconds in ahead of silver medallist Kaiza de la Cerna.
Three days ago, the 32-year old Cabuya reached the finals after topping the second heat with a world record-smashing 33.127 seconds.
This time, Cabuya said she overcame her stage fright in her clash with De la Cerna, who settled for the silver medal in 35.522 seconds.

She picked up speed after Cabuya completed the second challenge, which is the monkey bars, with just two quick grabs of the grips, and after having a much quicker pace at the 6-meter rings.
“Na perfect ko sila,” added Cabuya on her first SEA Games crown, and after receiving her medals from Philippine Olympic Committee president Abraham Tolentino and Philippine Sports Commission chairman Richard Bachmann.
Indonesian foe Anggun Haddi settled for third in 39.598 seconds.
Rodelas exuded a more laid back stance as he took the other gold medal at stake for the Philippines in the 100-meter men’s individual event.
The 35-year-old Rodelas took the lead after scrambling past the Tarzan Swing, the ninth of 10 obstacles he traversed to finish ahead of Kevin Pascua in the all-Filipino finals in 25.194 seconds.
Rodelas’ clocking was 1/100ths of a second off the world record time of 25.092 seconds which he set in the heats.
Pascua, who took the gold medal
back in 2019, ambled up the final quarter pipe challenge behind Rodelas by more than a second behind in 26.814 seconds.
“Relax lang kami kasi dahil Pilipino pa rin ang kukuha ng ginto dito,” said Rodelas, who gave up his teaching job at Quirino High School in Pandacan, Manila to pursue his dreams as an athlete. Yoong Wei Theng settled for the bronze medal in 28.334 seconds.
Philippine Obstacle Sports Federation president Al Agra confirmed the record-breaking feats of Cabuya and Rodelas.
Arbois, Hallasgo survive scorching heat to make marathon podium
n By RIERA U. MALLARI
SIAM REAP – Athletics delivered two medals under scorching conditions early Saturday in the marathon competitions of the 32nd Southeast Asian Games at the Angkor Wat here, a silver from Arlan Arbois and a bronze from one-time champion Christine Hallasgo.
Braving humid conditions, which reached 37-degree Celsius even at 6 a.m., Arbois settled for the silver in the men’s event with a time of 2:33:27, finishing behind Indonesian gold medalist Agus Prayogo (2:32:59).
Vietnam’s Nguyen Thanh Hoang (2:35:49) completed the podium. Arbois’ teammate Richard Salano did not finish.
In the women’s side, Hallasgo failed in her goal of regaining the marathon gold medal she once held during 2019 edition of the
Plus 40 heat takes toll on Filipino riders
SIEM REAP—Filipino riders missed making the podium of cycling’s cross country of mountain bike at the foothills of Kulen Mountain with the Indonesians wielding the broom in scalding conditions on Saturday in the 32nd Southeast Asian Games.
Ariana Evangelists barely made the podium with her fourth-place finish in the women’s race while Jericho Rivera was equally punished by the over 40-degree heat in the men’s side of the competition that saw riders in both genders either failing to finish or unable to complete laps.
“Unfortunately, arriving here three days before the event isn’t not enough for the riders to acclimatize with the
excessive heat,” said PhilCycling vice president and MTB head Oscar “Boying” Rodriguez who checked in here with the MTB team on Tuesday. “Even under the shade it was 45 [degrees Celsius].”
Indonesia’s Salyu Bella Dewi topped the 18.50-km race (3.7-km loop, 5 laps) in one hour, 13 minutes and 48 seconds. Malaysia’s Nur Assyira Abidin crossed almost four minutes later for the silver and Thailand’s Yonthanan Phonkla was under a minute further back for the bronze.
Evangelista persevered for a podium finish but could only settle for fourth place some six minutes behind Dewi but only 48 seconds after Phonkla
finished.
Shagne Yaoyao figured in a clash in the fourth lap and wound up ninth with a time of 1:24:51, while Nicole Quinones fell a lap short and wasn’t timed anymore. Eleven of the 18 riders who started managed to complete all five laps.
The result wasn’t any different in the men’s race topped by Indonesians Ferry Yudoyono and Zaenal Fanani with only two seconds separating them.
Rivera completed the 7-lap, 25.90km event raced over the same course in 1:19:11, five minutes off Yudoyono’s winning time of 1:13:51.
Mark Louwel Valderama was 10th with a time of 1:22:28 in the race that
had hometown bet Khim Menglong salvaging bronze with 1:15:06.
“No excuses,” said Rodriguez, stressing that the Indonesian and Thai teams got use to the Cambodian heat by arriving weeks before the competitions.
EJ Flores didn’t complete all seven laps.
“Will see the condition of the riders tomorrow,” Rodriguez said.
Up on Sunday is the mixed relay event. MTB coach Eboy Quinones designated Flores as the first rider, followed by Yaoyao then Nano and finally Evangelista.
MTB winds up Monday with the eliminator. The road events, meanwhile, are set Thursday to Sunday.
Pague, Anasta seal Brookside Open title clash
JOSE Maria Pague and doubles partner Vicente Anasta both needed an extra set but pulled through just the same as they repulsed Eury Gaspar and Noel Damian, respectively, yesterday to seal a title showdown in the men’s singles of the Brookside Open National Championships at the Brookside Hills courts in Cainta, Rizal.
Pague bounced back from a second set stumble with a dominant fightback in the decider, carving out a 6-2, 1-6, 6-0 victory over Gaspar in their semifinal face-off in the upper half of the 64-player draw, while Anasta rallied from a set down to score 3-6,
6-1, 3-0(ret.) win as the fifth-ranked Damian suffered cramps in their side of the semis duel. The top seeded Pague and the No.
2 Anasta dispute the crown and the top P50,000 purse at 4 p.m. today (Sunday).
Pague romped off with straightset wins over John Ayson, 6-1, 6-0, and Francisco Santos, 6-3, 6-1, in the second and third rounds, respectively, but faltered in the early going against Jude Caniza before pulling off a 5-7, 6-1, 5-5(ret.) win in the quarterfinals of the Group A tournament backed by Rep. Michael John “Jack” Duavit and
organized by Brookside Tennis Club president Allan del Castillo.
It was a sorry finish Caniza, who battled Pague shot-for-shot in the third set before cramping out.
Pague, meanwhile, recovered big from a second set loss in the semis with an imposing shutout win in the third set against Gaspar to arrange a face-off with Anasta, who hacked out four tough wins to gain a shot at the crown in the week-long event held under the PPS-PEPP tennis program put up by Palawan Pawnshop president/ CEO Bobby Castro. Damian and Alberto Villamor earli-
er upended the top-ranked pair of Pague and Anasta, 6-3, 6-1, to advance to the finals of the men’s doubles against Elvin Geluz and Marco Macalintal, who trounced Junel Canal and John Sonsona, 6-2, 6-4, for a crack at the top P40,000 prize.
Earlier, No. 3 Nilo Ledama, No.
4 Ronard Joven, sixth-ranked John Mari Altiche and the comebacking Alberto Lim took the early exit in singles play of the tournament presented by Dunlop and supported by Biyaheng Pinas Travel & Tours, Jalal Food PH and Mangangalugad Book Travel Stay.

“Despite the extreme heat our athletes did well, at least with our two medalists,” said Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association secretary general Edward Kho.
The heat will again be a factor as the bulk of the athletics’ team, led by world’s no. 3 pole vaulter, Ernest John Obiena, plunges into action starting Monday at the Morodok Techo National Stadium in Phnom Penh.
Also hoping to land medals for Team PH on Monday are Janry Ubas and Aries Toledo (decathlon), Olympian Kristina Knott and Kayla Richardson (women’s 200m), Umajesty Williams (men’s 200m), Aira Teodosio (women’s hammer throw), Elijah Cole (pole vault), Melvin Calano and John Paul Sarmiento (men’s javelin throw), Edwin Giron and Alfrence Braza (men’s 1,500), Joida Gagnao and Abiegail Manzano (women’s 5,000).
Remolino places second in men’s aquathlon
PHNOM PENH.— Andrew Kim Remolino settled for the silver medal in men’s aquathlon at the 32nd Southeast Asian Games here Saturday.
The two-time SEA Games triathlon silver medalist clocked 15 minutes and seven seconds in the 500-meter swim, 2.5km run sprint event won by Indonesia’s Rashif Yaqin in 14 minutes and 28 seconds in the seaside town of Kep, 167 kilometers away from here.
Singaporean Bryce Sheng Chong claimed the bronze medal in 15:39. Remolino’s podium finish somehow gave solace to Team Philippines after Raven Faith Alcoseba placed fourth in women’s aquathlon. Cambodia’s Margot Marabedian topped the women’s side after the former French triathlete clocked 16:09.
Thailand’s Aisika Kaewyongkod claimed the silver (17:15) followed by bronze medalist Dea Putri of Indonesia (17:33) and Alcoseba (17:43).
The 27-year-old Marabedian is a big threat to Kim Mangrobang’s title-retention bid in women’s triathlon on Monday. Mangrobang is seeking a fourth straight title after starting her reign at the 2017 edition in Malaysia.

Meet Misters of Filipinas Academy’s first 5 housemates
first five qualifiers of the Misters of Filipinas Academy were announced during the recent birthday party of Carlo Morris Galang president of PEPPS Foundation, Inc., organizers of Misters of Filipinas pageant, held at Palacio de Manila in Manila City.
HELD at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, the theme of the 2023 Met Gala is Karl Lagerfeld: A Line of Beauty, which pays tribute to the legendary German designer, and photographer, who passed away in early 2019.
To create the exclusive look for Colombian singer, Maluma Marco Falcioni, SVP of Creative Direction at Hugo Boss, drew inspiration directly from a Spring/Summer lookbook that was photographed by Karl, himself, in 1998, for HUGO BOSS.
Maluma’s tailored ensemble for the event is comprised of a sleek plastron and matching trousers, crafted entirely in sophisticated, grey-hued leather. The defining accessory is a fringeembellished, silk scarf. It is subtly embroidered with Karl Lagerfeld’s words from a handwritten note addressed to Werner Baldessarini – former Creative Director and Designer of Hugo Boss – back in 1998, the same year he shot the black-and-white lookbook. Evoking the essence, texture, and pared-back palette of the individual images captured in the photographs taken by Karl Lagerfeld, the overall feel of the look is one of muted elegance.
“We’re thrilled to be back at the
Met Gala and proud to share this little bit of history with Karl. His simple, yet modern approach to the photography that inspired Maluma’s look is very much on par with the way we currently view our campaigns. It’s an inspiring, more inclusive, and visionary approach that showcases sophisticated clothes for real people, framed in a beautiful light,” said Falcioni.
In keeping with this black-andwhite inspiration from Karl Lagerfeld’s photography, highly polished looks were also created for NFL player, Patrick Mahomes, and his wife, Brittany The former wore sleek loafers, doublebreasted Boss silk, double-breasted, peak-lapel suit, and a crisp shirt with a hidden placket, while the latter wore a stunning floor-length dress in white with silver-toned embroidered detailing. Likewise, Brand Ambassador and Italian tennis phenom, Matteo Berrettini, also attended the gala wearing an exclusive, custom-made BOSS look.
In the Philippines, Boss is exclusively distributed by Stores Specialists, Inc., and is located at Greenbelt 5, Newport Mall, Rustan’s Makati, Rustan’s Shangri-La, ShangriLa Plaza East Wing, and online at Trunc.ph, Rustans.com, and Zalora.
‘Fast X’ to furiously rev up cinemas nationwide
THE Fast and Furious franchise has enthralled global audiences for two decades, evolving from street racing to heists and espionage, while staying true to fast cars, action, and family.
With Fast X, the franchise delivers all the essential elements and more in the franchise’s epic final chapters. Directed by Louis Leterrier, the all-star cast includes returning actors Vin Diesel, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Ludacris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel, Jordana Brewster, Sung Kang, Jason Statham, John Cena, and Scott Eastwood, along with exceptional newcomers such as Jason Momoa, Brie Larson, Alan Ritchson, Daniela Melchior, and legendary Oscar winner Rita Moreno
In Fast X, Dom Toretto has a new responsibility – his son Little Brian –and faces a dangerous foe, Dante, unlike any other adversary he has faced. Dante, portrayed by Momoa, has analyzed and learned from Dom for twenty years, making him a formidable and unpredictable enemy.
“Dante was dead for two minutes and came back to avenge his family,” producer Jeff Kirschenbaum explains.
“He’s taking Dom’s reputation, fracturing his family, and framing the entire team.”
Momoa was thrilled to play the villain in the franchise.
“I hadn’t played a villain in about 10 years, and the opportunity to have that role in this franchise meant so much to me,” Momoa says. “It was fun to figure
out his specific balance of playfulness and psychopathy. Dom doesn’t understand how tricky and sly Dante is, and how Dante has duped him into his web.”
Star and producer Vin Diesel reflects on the franchise’s impact, saying, “When we made the first movie, we filmed it in L.A. and it was a regional story. We never anticipated its global implications or appeal. We certainly didn’t anticipate that we would travel all over the world and take the theme of family around it.”

Vanessa’s paradise
Fil-Am star shares an intimate look at her experience in the Philippines
By Nickie Wang
FILIPINO -American actress and singer Vanessa Hudgens recently visited the Philippines for the first time and expressed her admiration for the country, calling it a “paradise.”
In her interview with Boy Adunda during a special media engagement, she shared her excitement about her first experience visiting her mother’s home country. She described her time in the Philippines as an intimate experience where she was able to discover the beauty of the land and the wonderful people who inhabit it.
Vanessa was so mesmerized by the Philippines to the point that during a “Fast Talk” interview with the King of Talk, she answered without skipping a beat that “I’m already in a place where I wanted to be.”
“I was definitely raised very American except for all the rice and the adobo and pancit,” she said in jest.
The actress revealed that her connection to the Philippines has always existed within her, as she is half-Filipino and halfAmerican, but it was not until her trip that she was able to truly get in touch with that part of herself.
By sharing these thoughts, Vanessa is showing her appreciation and admiration for the country and its culture, and her gratitude for the opportunity to explore her own heritage.
“It’s a little bit of everything. It’s got paradise, it’s got a metropolitan city. It’s got kindness, everybody is so warm, so friendly. The people here are unique. Everyone is just so warm. The hospitality is unmatched. It’s just a little magical place,” she said.
The 34-year-old star, best known for her roles in High School Musical and The Princess Switch, will soon be sharing her travel experiences and adventures through a documentary directed by Paul Soriano. It will showcase the beauty of the country and its rich culture.
Explaining her decision to explore the Philippines for the first time, she said that visiting the country has always been on her list, “but it never happened.”
“I get to come here with my mom and sister. This is a hub for my family and I get to be here with my family. I’m 30 now. I’m thinking about raising a family and I want to be able to know my heritage so that I can bring that forth. So that my kids can know their backgrounds. They can know more about their own blood,” Vanessa stated. She also expressed her excitement about returning to the Philippines saying that she needs more time to explore the “incredible country.”
“The country is so big and has so much to offer. I’m a big nature girl, big beach girl. There are so many beautiful beaches here that I still have to go to. I wanna go hang out with the tribes. There’s just so much to do. I haven’t even gone shopping,” she said.
Aside from visiting Palawan, Vanessa hopes to visit Cebu and Mindanao in her next trip to the country.

‘Bee There’ and experience beekeeping and art of sound
BEE There, a bee farm tour that takes guests on an informative journey about beekeeping and the motivations behind Filipino artist Issay Rodriguez’s bee-inspired sound installation, is open to the public through a free event.
The bee farm, which is approximately two hours away from Manila, is located at the heart of the Cavite State University (CvSU) Bee Research, Innovation, Trade, and Extension (BRITE) Center in Indang, Cavite. It focuses on bee information, research, innovation, product development, trade, and mentorship of seasoned and budding researchers and extensionists. It serves as an exemplary learning ground for apiculture and meliponiculture.
The activity will commence with a series of lectures facilitated by BRITE Center Director Michele T. Bono and BRITE Center Extension and Training Unit Head Dickson
N. Dimero. They will provide guests with a comprehensive understanding of responsible beekeeping, breeding, and management. They will also introduce the different kinds of bees, as well as the diverse beekeeping products
Boracay is one of the country’s hottest tourist destinations
Discover Boracay with locals
BORACAY is making its way back to reaching pre-pandemic levels of visitors. Being one of the country’s hottest tourist destinations, it’s no surprise that many businesses in the area have adapted to technology by digitizing their services and partnering with Asia’s leading travel app, Klook.
“Tourism is one of the sectors most negatively affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. With the easing of restrictions and the general public’s eagerness to travel, the tourism industry is in a position to take advantage of this pent-up demand. However, the main goal here is not just survival but also sustainability, and we believe that digital transformation is crucial in helping big and small businesses not just survive but thrive,” said Michelle Ho, Klook General Manager for the Philippines and Thailand.
Viaje Royale Tours is an example of a Klook merchant who is reaping the benefits of digitalization.
Viaje Royale Tours has been an inbound travel agency since 2009, providing a variety of tours, water and land activities, hotel and resort bookings, transportation services, and hosting corporate events.
Marcus Fernandez, Web Admin, and E-Commerce Manager of Viaje Royale Tours strongly expressed his desire to
partner with Klook after experiencing the services and convenience during a family vacation. Since 2019, the company saw an increase in domestic arrivals in the 2nd quarter of 2020 and onwards.
“Klook assisted us in reaching a broader market and they also taught us how to run our business more efficiently,” shared Fernandez.
Ayen Durana, General Manager of the company shared positive sentiments about Klook’s involvement in their business, “Klook helped us see the total picture of how technology works and allowed us to identify areas for improvement, develop a plan to boost performance and take advantage of opportunities.”
After becoming a Klook Merchant, 60 to 70 percent of the company’s customers, mostly independent travelers, came from Klook.
Jessie Dipon, a Boracay Tour Guide from Viaje Royale Tours, is also a testament to the partnership’s success. In the Facebook Group DIY Travel Philippines, travelers who have availed of the tour through Klook have commended Jessie for his positive demeanor, knowledge of the islands, and extra effort in making the trip more enjoyable.
Viaje Royale Tours experienced posi-
tive growth after digitizing with Klook. By connecting local SMEs to more potential customers through the use of digital tools, Klook has made the discoverability of activities and booking easier and hassle-free.
“Those who may not have the resources to digitize on their own could easily get online presence via our platform and leverage the prospect of widening their customer base beyond those within their normal reach. We also take the extra effort to ensure that they are familiar with the tools they can maximize to grow their businesses via Klook,” shared Ho.
“Our goal this year is to help more local businesses thrive through our platform and open up more opportunities for them not just for domestic travel but also increase the possibilities for international inbound bookings as well,” concluded Ho.
With the summer season already underway, show your support to the Klook merchants and make your summer memories with Klook. Book fun activities and hotels through the Color Your Summer page for all your summer needs.
To become a merchant, visit Klook’s official website. For more information and further updates, follow Klook on their Facebook page and Instagram.
