DFA commits to One China gov't policy

Requejo THE Philippines remains committed to adhering to the One-China policy amid looming tensions in the Taiwan Strait following the visit of US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi to Taipei this week, the Department of Foreign Affairs said Thursday. "The Philippines adheres to the One-China policy. The Philippines urges restraint by all parties concerned. Diplomacy and dialogue must prevail," the DFA said. However, the Philippines must be prepared for China's possible "forcible retake of Taiwan," a security analyst said Thursday. The Asian giant's takeover of Taiwan is among the "worst" case scenarios, according to Chester Cabalza of the think tank International Development and Security Cooperation, in an interview with ANC Headstart. "We have to be prepared for this. Of course, our policy is not to interfere but to observe because we also have national security interest in Taiwan because we have overseas Filipino workers there,” Cabalza said. “In case there will be a retake of Taiwan by China using force, automatically Manila will become the buffer zone of China," he added.

The DBM has already set aside the budget,” Bautista said in a television interview. DOLE allots P50m to aid Abra workers THE Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) said Thursday it has allotted P50 million for financial assistance to workers displaced by the magnitude 7 earthquake that recently hit Abra. In a briefing Thursday, the regional director for DOLE-Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR), Nathaniel Lacambra, said the funds will be used under the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program. Lacambra said so far, P25 million has been released to DOLE- CAR. The amount will be concentrated first on Abra, which is the area most affected by the earthquake, he said. About P8 million of these funds have already been disbursed, he added. So far, there are around 425 TUPAD beneficiaries, the DOLE official said. Under the TUPAD program, beneficiaries will be temporarily employed from 10 to 90 days with a daily salary of P380, Lacambra said. Next page
