RESIDENT Ferdinand Marcos Jr. delivers his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) today, unfolding his agenda to bring the country back to overall good health while aiming to fulfill the many wish lists expressed by various sectors and groups that helped him win the presidency in a landslide last May.
The Palace said over the weekend that plans for economic recovery and the resumption of face-to-face classes will figure high on the President’s address to the 19th Congress, where he has the support of the supermajority in both the Senate and the House of Representatives (see related story on A1 – Editors). Senators, meanwhile, said they hope Marcos will lay down his legislative agenda with a specific focus on the pandemic response and full and inclusive recovery. Next page

Arroyo COVID Zubiri, Romualdez shoo-in for 19th Congress top posts positive, won't attend SONA By Rey E. Requejo, Rio N. Araja and Joel E. Zurbano FORMER President and current Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo has tested positive for COVID-19 and will be unable to attend President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.'s first State of the Nation Address (SONA) on Monday. According to a statement released by Arroyo's chief of staff, the congresswoman tested positive in an antigen test on July 15 and went into quarantine. Her doctor Dr. Martha Nucum said Arroyo "has been religiously taking the prescribed medicines and supplements required of a COVID-19 patient." A follow-up RT-PCR test on July 22 still returned a positive result. Three days before her first positive result, Arroyo met with former president Rodrigo Duterte in Davao City. China builds SCS rescue, maritime station CHINA has built permanent stations for its rescue and maritime forces on its artificial islands in the disputed South China Sea. Citing reports from state broadcaster China Central Television, South China Morning Post said that a new flying squadron and maritime rescue and administration staff will be stationed on the Fiery Cross, Subi, and Mischief reefs, Beijing's three biggest man-made islands in the Spratlys.
