Poultry raisers woe lack of govt support, strict border controls Fuel subsidies, P lower tariffs for bakers pushed By Othel V. Campos and Macon Ramos-Araneta

OULTRY raisers warned of possible shortage of chicken and chicken products in the next two quarters following a shortfall in production.

“We are in a very challenging situation,” said the president of the United Broilers and Raisers Association (UBRA), Elias Jose Inciong, adding that a shortage would ensue if production problems were not addressed. A number of restaurants—includ-

ing fast food establishments—have been complaining of a tightness in the supply of dressed chicken for their requirements. While dressed chicken prices averaged about P130 per kilogram in Luzon, groceries and su-

permarkets sell at an average of P150 to P160 per kilo Choice cut chicken cut-ups sell at an average of P180 a kilo. The group advised President Marcos, who concurrently heads the Department of Agriculture (DA), to craft a plan to boost yield and optimize border controls to prevent zoonotic diseases from reaching the local poultry population. By Alena Mae S. Flores CONSUMERS of the Manila Electric Co. (Meralco) will experience lower rates for July as the average household’s overall rate went down by P0.7067 per kWh following the refund ordered by the Energy Regulatory Commission. The July rate reduction effectively reversed all increases in the overall power rates since the start of the year. Meralco spokesperson Joe Zaldarriaga said this is equivalent to a decrease of around P141 in the total bill of a residential customer consuming 200 kWh. “Good news to our customers. We are announcing a P0.71 per kWh, rounded off for residential consumers this month of July,” Zaldarriaga said. ERC earlier directed Meralco to implement an additional Distribution True-Up refund totaling P21.8 billion for 12 months or until the amount is fully refunded. Next page
