New COVID cases up 30 percent That’s 240 average infections daily, alert level 2 in NCR a ‘possibility’ By Willie Casas

T

HE Philippines tallied about 30 percent more COVID-19 cases in the last seven days compared to the previous week, the Department of Health (DOH) said Monday.

From June 6 to 12, the country recorded 1,682 new COVID-19 cases or an average of 240 per day, the DOH said. This is 30.4 percent higher than cases from May 30 to June 5, it added. Of the additional infections, eight were severe and critical. The DOH on Saturday said Metro Manila posted a 1.6-percent rise in its positivity rate, but said the uptick was not alarming. Still, the DOH said raising Metro Manila to Alert Level 2 was a possibility if the uptick leads to a rise in hospital admissions. “The possibility would always be there, if the cases increase, but our countrymen must understand that we are learning to live with the virus.

China says WPS traditional fishing area of Chinese By Rey E. Requejo and Macon Ramos-Araneta THE Chinese Embassy in the Philippines on Monday said the West Philippine Sea is a “traditional fishing ground” for Chinese fishermen. The embassy made the statement in response to the diplomatic protest filed by the Department of Foreign Affairs over the presence of Chinese vessels in the Julian Felipe Reef in April. More than 100 Chinese vessels were found illegally operating in the maritime waters of Julian Felipe Reef, which is within the territorial sea of the Kalayaan Island Group on April 4, 2022, the DFA said. However, Chinese Ambassador to the Philippines Huang Xilian said the DFA and the Chinese government have contradicting claims over the maritime issue. Nonetheless, Huang said this is just a small part of the relationship between the two countries. Meanwhile, the Chinese Embassy has yet to comment on the latest diplomatic protest filed by the DFA, this time in connection with China’s maritime activities within Manila’s 200mile exclusive economic zone. The DFA has already lodged more than 300 complaints against Beijing’s “illegal” activities in the West Philippine Sea, a part of the vast South China Sea that Manila claims. Next page
