WHO alert up on monkeypox Notes ‘unusual’ spread of virus, warns situation could turn serious

ENEVA—The World Health Organization cautioned Friday (Saturday in Manila) that some 200 monkeypox cases found in recent weeks outside of countries where the virus usually circulates could be just the beginning.
“We don’t know if we are just seeing the peak of the iceberg,” Sylvie Briand, WHO’s epidemic and pandemic preparedness and prevention chief, acknowledged in a briefing to countries on the “unusual” spread of the virus. This developed as Health Secretary Francisco Duque III on Saturday said there is no vaccine against monkeypox yet that has been approved or authorized by the Philippines’ Food and Drug Administration (FDA). Hospitals in the Philippines are preparing for a possible outbreak of monkeypox in the country. Rene Jose de Grano, president of the Private Hospitals Association of the Philippines, Inc. (PHAPI), said on Saturday that although no case has so far been reported in the Philippines, their members and relevant CONTINUED ON 3A

COVID response up to new gov’t—DOH THE Department of Health (DOH) is keeping its guard up against COVID-19 by endorsing its pandemic responses to its different concerned bureaus to "institutionalize” the works of the National Vaccination Operations Center and the Inter-Agency Task Force (IATF) for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases, an official said Saturday. Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje added the DOH has also introduced the mandate of the Response, Vaccination, and Integration clusters so the gains of their pandemic responses would be sustained. Cabotaje, who also chairs the NVOC, said the IATF, the National Task Force (NTF) Against COVID-19, and the vaccination cluster will endorse all the programs to the incoming administration of President-elect Ferdinand Marcos Jr. This was after the World Health Organization (WHO) said Friday it is working to declare an end to the COVID-19 outbreak as a public health emergency of CONTINUED ON 3A
