‘Pray for me, wish me well’ Marcos proclaimed as PH 17th President, Duterte-Carpio as 15th VP By Maricel V. Cruz, Macon Ramos-Araneta and Vito Barcelo

ERDINAND "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. said he was "humbled" as Congress formally declared him President-elect on Wednesday, then promised Filipinos he would "strive for perfection" as the country's 17th Chief Executive while asking "all to pray for me... (and) wish me well."
With Congress, sitting as the National Board of Canvassers, certifying the results of the May 9 general elections after the fastest official counting of votes in the country's history—done over just two days—Marcos Jr. and running mate Sara Duterte-Carpio were declared President and Vice President, respectively. “I want to do well because when
a President does well, the country does well, and I want to do well for this country," Marcos, 64, told reporters at the Batasang Pambansa complex in Quezon City. Following in the footsteps of his father, the late President Ferdinand Marcos Sr., "BBM" garnered more than 31.6 million votes, or 58.77 percent of the total votes cast, Next page

Food group presses for more DOF: Incoming govt must raise taxes support for private businesses By Julito G. Rada
By Othel V. Campos THE country’s biggest food group pressed the incoming government to shore up support for private businesses following warnings of an imminent food crisis as a result of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The Philippine Chamber of Agriculture and Food Inc. (PCAFI) said Russia, Ukraine and India have ceased wheat exportation while many other countries contemplate keeping their food production for their own security.
“The government should provide the right environment and incentives for the private sector to invest, expand their production, value chain and supply chain logistics," said PCAFI president Danilo Fausto at the group’s first face-to-face assembly in two years. He added that the private sector plays a critical role now that the country faces food security threats, along with soaring food prices, because of its heavy food import dependence. Next page
Early signs of COVID-19 surge noted, but not sustained so far By Willie Casas A HEALTH expert on Wednesday said the early signals of a COVID-19 resurgence have been observed, but none have been sustained so far. "We’re seeing early signals of a surge. Over the past month, there were three instances of reversals of the
decreasing growth rates of cases," said Dr. John Wong of the IATF Technical Working Group. "However, even if none has been sustained, we should take these as early warning signals and take the appropriate steps," Wong said. The Department of Health (DOH) has said that a slight increase in COVID-19 cases was observed in the Next page

Teen kills 19 children in Texas school A TEENAGE gunman killed at least 19 young children and two teachers at an elementary school in Texas on Tuesday, prompting a furious President Joe Biden to denounce the US gun lobby and vow to end the nation's cycle of mass shootings. The attack in Uvalde—a small community about an hour from the Mexican border—was the deadliest US school shooting in years, and the
latest in a spree of bloody gun violence across America. "It's time to turn this pain into action for every parent, for every citizen of this country," Biden said, his voice heavy with emotion. "It's time for those who obstruct or delay or block common sense gun laws —we need to let you know that we will not forget," he said. Next page
