Gov’t can’t keep prices down
DTI admits this much for basic goods, cites high cost of raw materials By Othel V. Campos
O
N THE back of worries about a looming food crisis for the second half of the year, the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) said Friday it could not keep the prices of some commodities low because the cost of raw materials had increased.
Trade Undersecretary Ruth Castelo said in a televised briefing: “We cannot stop the price from moving because the price of raw materials also increased. These are the products' major ingredients.” The Department of Agriculture
had warned this week of an impending food crisis due to the COVID-19 pandemic, high fuel costs, and the impact of Russia's Ukraine invasion. But the DTI said it is constantly monitoring the price movement of some goods, after recently approv-
ing the price hike of some commodities. Castelo said only the price of 82 basic necessities and prime commodities in the suggested retail price bulletin had an increase out of their 212 stock keeping units. Next page

Martin Romualdez is set to work on strengthening the unity and bond of the lower chamber's members ahead of the expected heavy but vital tasks of the incoming 19th Congress. Romualdez, the leading contender for House Speaker, revealed this during his luncheon meeting with Partido Demokratiko Pilipino-Lakas ng Bayan (PDP-Laban) stalwarts Thursday at EDSA Shangri-La Hotel in Mandaluyong City. Discussed during the meeting was the lawmakers' intention to fully support the would-be legislative agenda of
presumptive President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. "This is truly the message of the UniTeam during the campaign period,” Romualdez said during an ambush interview. One of the key measures to be tackled by the 19th Congress—two months before its official opening on July 25— is postponing the upcoming barangay elections in December to save funds for a renamed stimulus bill, he added. Romualdez said: “That is one of the complaints of the barangay chairpersons that we met in Liga ng mga Barangay, so we shall consider that.” He added: “If that will be taken up,
ment before the High Court. In a television interview, Mendoza was asked if any questions on candidates and even on the conduct of polls could not be elevated before the Supreme Court. He was also asked if petitioners could seek a temporary restraining order on the
canvassing of votes and the proclamation of winner for the May 9 elections. "That will have to be done through an election protest... not at this time, but at this time, the Constitution provides step by step, what shall be done with the votes Next page
