(Story on A4) ESPINOSA RECANTS DRUGS RAPS VS. DE LIMA, SENATOR MAY SUE ACCUSERS By Rey E. Requejo
LEILA DE LIMA
SELF-CONFESSED drug lord Kerwin Espinosa has retracted all his allegations implicating detained opposition Senator Leila de Lima in illegal drugs cases. In a counter-affidavit subscribed before the Department of Justice on Thursday, Espinosa recanted his sworn statements during the Senate joint committee hearings on the killing of his father, Mayor Rolando Espinosa Sr., claiming he was “coerced, pressured, intimidated
and seriously threatened” by the police to implicate De Lima. “Any and all of his statements given during the Senate hearings, or in the form of sworn written affidavits, against Senator Leila de Lima are not true. He has no dealings with Sen. de Lima and has not given her any money at any given time,” Espinosa said. “Any statement (Espinosa) made against the Senator is false and was the result of pressure, coercion, intimidation and serious threats to his life and family
members from the police who instructed him to implicate the Senator into the illegal drug trade,” the statement added. As a result, the senator’s camp said they are considering filing countercharges against those who coerced Espinosa into implicating her in the illegal drugs trade, De Lima’s legal counsel and spokesperson Rolly Peoro said in an ANC interview. The senator, who is seeking reelection in the May 9 polls, will not let her accusers

In its 2022 Special 301 Report released Thursday, the US Trade Representative (USTR) cited a study by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) and European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), which highlighted the global trade in counterfeit and pirated goods, which was estimated at $464 billion in 2019, accounting for 2.5 percent of all goods traded in that year. The OECD report, “Global Trade in Fakes: A Worrying Threat,” said China continues to be the largest origin economy for counterfeit and pirated goods, accounting, along with Hong Kong, for more than 85 percent of global seizures of counterfeit goods from 2017 to 2019. “This past year, countries continue to report significant quantities of counterfeit imports from China, including COVID-19 testing kits, personal protective equipment (PPE) such as those air-purifying particulate respirators meeting US Department of

FORMER senator Ferdinand "Bongbong" Marcos Jr. will not participate in the final Commission on Elections presidential panel interview, saying he wants to focus on his presidential campaign before the May 9 polls. "With less than two weeks before the May 9 elections, frontrunner Ferdinand 'Bongbong' Marcos Jr. has decided to forego his participation in the Comelec's presidential panel interview, scheduled on May 1, 2022," his spokesman, lawyer Vic Rodriguez said in a statement. Comelec Commissioner George Garcia said the pre-taped
panel interviews with the candidates would be aired on Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) member stations from May 2 to 6. The 64-year-old Marcos thanked the poll body for its invitation and acknowledged the importance of the event. "He opted, however, to conclude the entire 90-day campaign period with visits to his supporters and compliances with previous commitments for political events, like town hall meetings and political rallies," Rodriguez added. Marcos, who is leading in several preelection surveys, skipped the first two Comelec-sponsored debates last March 19 and April 3. The Marcos camp said he would not participate in debates that only intended to pit candidates against each other, claiming that the public was supposedly tired of "political mudslinging".
