Landmark ruling a victory for 340k migrant workers, not just OFWs ONG KONG—A Hong Kong judge ruled Friday the police had “prematurely curtailed” their investigation of a Philippine domestic worker being exploited by her employer, a biting assessment of the city’s failure to protect victims of human trafficking.
The landmark ruling marks a rare victory for migrant worker activists, who have long argued that the city’s 340,000 domestic workers—mostly women from the Philippines and Indonesia—are acutely vulnerable to various forms of abuse and exploitation. Last year, Brian Apthorp, a British permanent resident, was convicted of committing indecent assault against his domestic helper—referred to in legal documents as “CB”. After her win in court, she mounted another legal challenge in July 2021—this time against the government for failing to properly investigate her more serious accusations of trafficking and forced labor. High Court judge Russell Coleman on Friday ruled in CB’s favor, saying that authorities had “prematurely curtailed” their investigation into her case. Some 690,000 adults with health risks are eligible to get a second COVID-19 booster shot, the Department of Health (DOH) said on Saturday. Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said the agency was expected to immunize up to 13,000 people with comorbidities— the priority sector for this booster campaign—beginning on Monday. Second booster shots will be administered at least three months after the first one, according to the health department. The National Vaccination Operations Center (NVOC) on Saturday said it is expecting at least 7,000 immunocom-
promised individuals to take their second COVID-19 booster doses during the first day of its rollout. “During the first day, we are seeing around 7,000 to 13,000 immunocompromised persons who will take their second booster. We will roll it out throughout the whole country,” said Cabotaje, also NVOC chair, at the Laging Handa briefing. IMPACT Hub Manila, the company tapped by the Commission on Elections (Comelec) to mount its series of presidential and vice-presidential debates ahead of the May 9 polls, has described its failure to pay Sofitel Philippine Plaza for hosting the events as a "misunderstanding" and "miscommunication". In a statement on Saturday through its lawyer, the company said reports “as to the cause of the miscommunication were incomplete." The company said it will discuss "privately" its payment mess with Sofitel "and other stakeholders".
