P4/l fuel price hike looms Prolonged war in Ukraine, EU ban on Russian oil push pump cost

By Alena Mae S. Flores

T

HE Department of Energy (DOE) warned Friday of an impending increase in the price of petroleum products next week amid the ongoing Russian invasion of Ukraine. Industry sources said pump prices are already trending up by more than P4 per liter. As of Thursday, gasoline was already up by P2.85 per liter, diesel by P4.18 per liter and kerosene by P3.94 per liter. "This international crisis underscores the urgent need for the Philippines to attain energy independence and security,” Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi said. “A country like ours cannot remain at the mercy of global supply or price volatilities.” Meanwhile, the Department of the Interior and Local Government (DILG) urged city and municipal mayors to set up a complaint desk or hotline to address concerns from the beneficiaries of fuel subsidy Año directed all city and municipal chief executives nationwide to submit a validated list of qualified tricycle drivers to the DILG regional offices on or before April 26 in preparation for another round of fuel subsidy releases under the Pantawid Pasada Program. The DOE attributed the looming price increase to several factors, including diminishing hopes for a resolution to

Lack of indemnity law snags COVID pill buy

DEBATE DELAYED. Comelec Commissioner George Garcia (left) explains

THE government has not yet purchased stocks of the oral COVID-19 pill Paxlovid because Pfizer is requiring an indemnification law before it sells the life-saving drugs to the Philippines. The indemnification law will absolve Pfizer of liabilities in case of serious side effects of the antiviral drug, which the World Health Organization on Friday strongly recommended its use for mild and moderate COVID-19 patients at

highest risk of hospital admission. “The government cannot import this drug because the company is asking for an indemnification law before it sells Paxlovid directly to the government. If a problem arises from taking Paxlovid, they want to be sure they cannot be sued,” Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said. The WHO said on the same day that Paxlovid, a combination of nirmatrel-

vir and ritonavir, is the best therapeutic choice for patients with non-severe COVID-19 who are at highest risk of developing severe disease and hospitalization, such as the unvaccinated, older, or immunocompromised. The recommendation was based on trials involving 3,078 patients. The data showed that the risk of hospitalization was reduced by 85 percent with Paxlovid.

THE Commission on Elections (Comelec) appealed for patience as its online precinct finder project stumbled out the door on its first day. Online users derided the program, called Voter Verifier, after they were greeted with an error screen when they tried to access the site. "Let's give the system a day to make an adjustment," Commissioner George Erwin Garcia said. The Voter Verifier went live Friday on the Comelec's website, 21 days after it was launched as a project with the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT).

The site is supposed to enable registered voters can check their precinct locations by keying in their full name and the city or municipality where they registered. Meanwhile, the Philippine National Police (PNP) assured the public that it could still secure the 2022 polls despite a possible change of leadership a day before Election Day. In a radio interview, PNP spokesperson Police Col. Jean Fajardo said PNP chief Police Gen. Dionardo Carlos is looking forward to his retirement on May 8 when he reaches the retirement age of 56.
