ITH fuel prices expected to hit record highs next week, only corn farmers and fisherfolk so far are entitled to receive a P3,000 fuel subsidy from the government, a Department of Agriculture official said Saturday.
“Only corn farmers and fisherfolk are on the list of 162,000 beneficiaries of the subsidy,” DA Undersecretary Kristine Evangelista said in an interview on Dobol B TV. The aid is meant to ease the impact of the series of fuel price hikes on their livelihood, she said. CONTINUED ON 3A

Russian forces squeeze Kyiv, rout port city
New Comelec execs in limbo amid elections
KYIV—Russian forces stepped up the pressure on Kyiv on Saturday and pummeled civilian areas in other Ukrainian cities, including hospitals in Mykolaiv and a mosque in Mariupol, the port city already devastated by two weeks of siege. Russian strikes destroyed the airport in the town of Vasylkiv on Saturday morning, about 40 kilometers (25 miles) south of Kyiv, while an oil depot was also hit and caught fire, the mayor said. The northwest suburbs of the capital, including Irpin and Bucha, have already endured days of heavy bombardment while Russian armored vehicles are advancing on the northeastern edge. Ukrainian presidential adviser Mykhailo Podolyak on Friday called it a “city under siege.” CONTINUED ON 3A

THE UniTeam tandem of former Sen. Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte vowed on Saturday to strengthen law enforcement in the country if they win in the May 9 elections. Vice presidential candidate Duterte, meanwhile, stood firm on her decision to go on with her campaign without attending any debates. “I’ve already decided that I will do this campaign without joining debates. I leave it up to our countrymen to decide on who to choose as vice president given the direction of my campaign,” the President’s daughter told reporters on the sidelines of her meetand-greet with multi-sectoral groups in BF Homes, Parañaque.
“We will let you know if we will change our decision or not. But as of this very moment, the decision is to conduct this campaign without joining debates,” the Davao mayor added when asked if there is a chance that she will change her mind. In late February, Liloan Mayor Christina Frasco, spokesperson of the Lakas-CMD vice-presidential candidate, said Duterte would instead woo voters on the campaign trail. Duterte’s statement on law enforcement came during her meet-and-greet with various sectoral groups at Marymount Academy Gym, J. Villaroman St., Classic Homes, BF Homes, in Parañaque City organized by Rep. Joy Tambunting and former Rep. Gus Tambunting, who is running for Congress. CONTINUED ON 3A

UNLESS President Rodrigo Duterte calls a special session of Congress, his three new appointees to the Commission on Elections cannot be confirmed or rejected by the Commission on Appointments (CA) until weeks after the May 9 elections. Chairman Saidamen Pangarungan and two new commissioners will run the national and local elections, but they will face the powerful CA for their confirmation hearings only when the 18th Congress resumes session on May 23. By then the president-elect who will succeed Duterte will likely be known. Duterte’s new appointees to head the Commission on Audit and Civil Service Commission — former Davao City accountant Rizalina Justol and former Secretary to the Cabinet Karlo Nograles, respectively — face the same situation. The four other poll commissioners are former Court of Appeals Associate Justice Socorro Inting, former Davao election CONTINUED ON 3A
