Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and Lakas-CMD Chair Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio respectively, and their allied Tingog party-list have gathered more solid support as one of the country’s largest fraternities has endorsed them. The Scouts Royale Brotherhood International Service Fraternity and Sorority,
Inc. (SRB), through its national and international officers, has unanimously expressed support for Marcos and DuterteCarpio, adding to the long list of groups and organizations that have gravitated toward the UniTeam tandem. SRB also endorsed the election of the Tingog party-list to the House of Representatives. “SRB is convinced that Tingog Partylist’a thrust of championing regional development is critical in chart-

Meralco, other power producers advise higher rates loom as oil, coal costs soar
Inflation may go over 4% if fuel pressure continues By Julito G. Rada INFLATION may breach 4 percent this year if oil prices continue to climb amid the uncertainty brought about by Russia's war in Ukraine, the Bank of the Philippine Islands (BPI) said over the weekend. In a report, BPI said although it kept its 2022 inflation forecast of 3.8 percent, the rate could shoot beyond 4 percent if upward pressure on oil prices doesn't ease soon. "We continue to expect favorable base effects particularly in food to keep the headline print muted through March. However, upside risks to inflation have built up due to recent global price devel-
opments and this could spill over to food products eventually. Global oil prices have breached the $100 [per barrel] threshold amid the conflict in Ukraine," it said. It said major global oil producers have not expressed any intention to ramp up their production despite the pressure from the West. “A prolonged period of elevated oil prices could push inflation close to the target of the BSP,” BPI said, referring to the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas. On Friday, the Philippine Statistics Authority reported that inflation remained at 3 percent in February 2022, the same Next page

Amid the already sharp rise in pump prices, a federation of jeepney drivers called for an immediate P1 increase in the minimum fare while they petition the government for a P5 increase. Motorists, meanwhile, can expect diesel prices to rise a whopping P5.50 per liter and gasoline to shoot up by P3.50 a liter on March 8, one of the biggest one-time price hikes since the passage of the Oil Deregulation Law in 1998. On Friday, Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi met with power generation companies to discuss the impact of increasing international coal prices, and seek measures to address the anticipated spike in the cost of electricity. The Philippine Independent Power Producers Association (PIPPA) informed Cusi that the high coal prices in the world market will have a P9 per kilowatt-hour (kWh) effect in the price of electricity, given the March 3 coal price of $446 per ton, up from only $100 a ton. PIPPA urged the Department of Energy
