Survey projects BBM victory by huge 27-m vote margin

F RECENT political surveys are to be taken as indication of the outcome of the May 9 elections, Partido Federal ng Pilipinas standard-bearer Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. would come out as a runaway winner, leaving the other presidential bets biting the dust by more than 27 million votes.

This was based on Pulso ng Pilipinas, a compilation and summation of all Kalye Survey results produced by information and statistical data provider Splat Communications, working jointly with consulting firm Simplified Strategic Solutions (SSS).

Allowing for a voter turnout of 82 percent of the total 67-million registered voters, or 54.94-million voters, Marcos will get 33,128,820 votes. Leni Robredo, a very far second, will get 5,637,638 votes.

This figure indicates a lead of 27,491,182 votes for Marcos.

Manila Mayor Isko Moreno will take the third place, with 4,603,972 votes, while Manny Pacquiao and Panfilo Lacson will garner 3,483,196 and 1,395,476 votes, respectively.

Splat Communications stressed that they decided to do an estimation to give a clear picture of the statistical data obtained.

Based on the January 1 to 31 results, Marcos got a total of 8,170 or 60.30 percent; Robredo got 1,323 or 9.77 percent.

Moreno got 1,135 or 8.38 percent; Pacquiao, 859 or 6.34 percent; and Lacson, 344 or 2.54 percent.

There were 113,548 respondents for the said period, 12.67 percent of which were undecided.

“With a little over three months left before the elections, please be observant and extra-vigilant. Expect all the worst imaginable drama, intrigues, downright lies, smear campaigns, and threats against the frontrunner BBM,” Splat said.

“All of his opponents will become desperate as Election Day draws near. Now the disparity is as clear as day. This lead is insurmountable at this stage,” Splat added in the voice-over.

In the 2016 presidential elections, Rodrigo Duterte, with 15,970,018 votes, pulled away by 6,269,636 votes from Manuel Roxas, garnered 9,700,382.

PRESIDENTIAL candidate and Manila City Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso vowed to create more economic hubs in the countryside to spur economic growth and progress and speed up the country’s recovery from the devastating impact of the two-year COVID-19 pandemic.

Moreno stressed this during his presentation of his ‘Bilis Kilos’ 10-point economic agenda at the “Panata sa Bayan” Presidential Candidates Forum sponsored by the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP).

This will be pursued through the combination of the current administration’s massive infrastructure “Build, Build, Build” (BBB) program and the equally successful “Public Private Partnership” (PPP) of the Aquino administration, the Manila mayor said.

“BBB will continue but with PPP being revived, especially in the light of expect-

ed higher loan interest rates and higher foreign debt, which is now at 63 percent of our GDP (gross domestic product). A peso spent in Metro Manila will have much less economic multiplier effect than the same peso spent in the countryside,” the 47-yearold presidential aspirant said.

P1.20 oil price hike next week -- Unioil MOTORISTS should brace for another round of pump price increases of petroleum products in the coming week, according to projections by Unioil Petroleum Philippines.

In its fuel price forecast for February 8 to 14, 2022, Unioil said the price per liter of diesel may increase by P1.10 to P1.20.

Gasoline prices, meanwhile, may go up

by P1.00 to P1.10 per liter.

Oil companies usually announce price adjustments every Monday, to be implemented on Tuesday.

Effective January 25, fuel firms hike gasoline prices by P1.45 per liter and diesel by P1.90 per liter.

Year-to-date adjustments stand at a total net increase of P4.95 per liter for gasoline and P7.20 per liter for diesel.

Russian embassy hit by fire; no casualties

THE Russian Embassy in Manila at upscale Dasmariñas Village in Makati City was hit by a fire on Friday night and sustained estimated damage of at least P100 million. No casualties were reported.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to the Russian Foreign Ministry.

“On the evening of February 4, a severe fire broke out in the building of the Russian Embassy in Manila. There are no victims or injured. Employees and members of their families who were in the embassy were evacuated,” a statement released after the incident read.

The fire reportedly started on the second floor at 8:25 p.m. and reached the second alarm.

It was declared under control by 11:38 p.m. and out at 2:10 a.m. Saturday, according to reports from the Bureau of Fire Protection.

Solon: Rody to ink law on allowance for HCWs A CONGRESSMAN on Saturday said he expects President Rodrigo Duterte to give the green light on giving COVID-related benefits to the country’s healthcare workers (HCWs), retroactive to July last year, and for them to continue receiving such extra pay for as long as the state of public health emergency stays.

Camarines Sur Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte also welcomed the ratification by Congress of their respective versions of the measure granting government and private HCWs a monthly risk allowance.

The exact amount will range from P3,000 to P9,000, depending on whether these medical frontliners are stationed in low-, mediumor high-risk areas.

Villafuerte is one of the authors of the consolidated bill (House Bill 10701) that was passed on third reading by the bigger chamber last January 31. The Senate passed its version (Senate Bill 2421) last Feb. 1.

Both chambers then ratified the final version for President Duterte’s approval before they took a break last Friday ahead of the three-month campaign period for the May 9 national elections.

White House picks Carlson as new US envoy to PH

PRESIDENT Joe Biden has selected career diplomat MaryKay Loss Carlson as the next United States ambassador to the Philippines, the White House announced on Friday.

The position had been vacant for more than a year since Sung Kim ended his four-year tour of duty in Manila in October 2020.

Carlson currently serves as Deputy Chief of Mission at the US Embassy in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

VIENNA—It’s official: From Saturday, Austrians over the age of 18 must be vaccinated against Covid-19 or face the possibility of a heavy fine, an unprecedented measure in the European Union.

The new measure, adopted on January 20 by Parliament, was signed into law

by President Alexander Van der Bellen on Friday, the culmination of a process that began in November in the face of the rapid spread of the Omicron variant.

The government decided to pursue its new tougher approach despite criticism within the country.

“No other country in Europe is following us on compulsory vaccines,” said Manuel Krautgartner, who has campaigned against the new approach.

In neighbouring Germany, a similar law championed by the new Social Democrat Chancellor Olaf Scholz was debated last month in the Bundestag, or lower house of parliament, but has not made progress yet due to divisions within the political class.

US nixes sanctions on Iran civilian-use nuke program

ASHINGTON -- The US State Department is waiving sanctions on Iran’s civilian nuclear program in a technical step necessary to return to the 2015 nuclear agreement, a senior official said Friday.

The resumption of the waiver, ended by the Donald Trump administration in 2020, “would be essential to ensuring Iran’s swift compliance” if a new deal on controlling Tehran’s nuclear program can be reached in talks in Vienna, the State Department official said.

The waiver allows other countries and companies to participate in Iran’s civilian nuclear program without triggering US sanctions on them, in the name of promoting safety and non-proliferation.

The civilian program includes Iran’s increasing stockpiles of en-

riched uranium.

“Absent this sanctions waiver, detailed technical discussions with third parties regarding disposition of stockpiles and other activities of nonproliferation value cannot take place,” the official said, insisting on anonymity.

The step came as talks to restore the 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, or JCPOA, which then president Trump unilaterally withdrew from in 2018, were at an advanced stage.

Deaths from laced cocaine in Argentina climb to 24 THE death toll among dozens of people who consumed cocaine likely laced with opioids in Buenos Aires rose to 24 on Friday, with 23 still in hospital, health officials said.

Eight of the hospitalized are in serious condition and on mechanical ventilation.

Officials said 24 people, aged between 21 and 58, have died since Tuesday night from adulterated cocaine bought from dealers in the poor neighborhood of Loma Hermosa, some 40 kilometers (25

miles) from the Buenos Aires city center.

Most died far from the point of sale, 12 of them at home and two on the road, unable to make it to a hospital on time because of the sudden effects of the tainted drug. Many suffered heart attacks.

But the FBI said: “Apollo Carreon Quiboloy, the founder of a Philippines-based church, is wanted for his alleged participation in a labor trafficking scheme that brought church members to the United States, via fraudulently obtained visas, and forced the members to solicit donations for a bogus charity, donations that actually were used to finance church operations and the lavish lifestyles of its leaders.”

“Furthermore, it is alleged that females were recruited to work as personal assistants, or ‘pastorals,’ for Quiboloy and that victims prepared his meals, cleaned his residences, gave him massages and were required to have sex with Quiboloy in what the pastorals called ‘night duty’.”

The FBI said people with information on Quiboloy could contact its local FBI office or the nearest American Embassy or Consulate.

Marcos Jr. is the standard-bearer of the Partido Federal ng Pilipinas, while Duterte-Carpio -- daughter of President Rodrigo Duterte -- is the chairman and vice-presidential bet of Lakas-Christian Muslim Democrats (CMD). The two parties have formed the so-called UniTeam Alliance (see related stories on A2 – Editors) The Comelec First Division has yet to release its decision on the consolidated petitions for his disqualification from the presidential race.

These petitions stem from a 1995 tax evasion conviction and were separately filed by martial law survivors, led by Bonifacio Ilagan; the Akbayan party-list; and Abubakar Mangelen.

A majority vote is needed to either grant or junk the petitions.

Recently-retired Comelec commissioner Rowena Guanzon last week revealed she voted in favor of Marcos Jr.’s consolidated case involving the petitions.

The former senator also did not join the other presidential candidates in the Kapisanan ng mga Brodkaster ng Pilipinas (KBP) Presidential Forum on Friday, which coincidentally was the schedule of the taping of his television interview with Sanchez.

“I’m sure the FBI knows where Pastor Quiboloy is. I’m also sure that the FBI knows the proper legal procedure to enable the US justice system to acquire jurisdiction over Pastor Quiboloy’s person,” Guevarra said in a text message to reporters.

In November last year, the Palace said President Duterte “will execute the laws accordingly” amid the issues hounding his spiritual adviser.

Some 30 to 40 enthusiasts play the net game whose popularity is growing and is attracting more players from all levels, young and old alike.

Ultimately, the Filipino-American superstar was left impressed by everyone he worked with in the show,

especially how they quickly adapted from racing dragon boats at sea to pitching ideas in the boardroom.

Given the show’s cutthroat competition wherein the candidates are vying for a US$250,000 job offer to be ONE Chairman and CEO Chatri Sityodtong’s “Apprentice,” Vera can only imagine what these men and women endured during the production of the award-winning program.

“Honestly, everybody stood out,” the inaugural ONE Heavyweight World Champion said.

“To get on that show, I can only imagine the ringer you’d have to go through and the qualifications you need. I was just listening to everyone speak. Everyone was impressive to me.”

You can use these hints to guess the right word in six attempts. It sounds simple enough, but hundreds of thousands got hooked on Wordle.

According to The Guardian, more than two million people play it daily.

Since there are countless possibilities for what the word of the day is, players have their way of finding the correct letters in the first few tries. For instance, their first word contains two or more vowels to get a better idea of the word of the day.

Regardless of whether players have a strategy or tackle the world problem headon, Wordle continues to exercise everyone’s vocabulary by determining just how much we know about the English language.

Wordle is the brainchild of software engineer Josh Wardle, hence the name. He created the game for his partner, a fan of word games. And to make the game experience more enticing, Wardle promises that his

creation won’t be laden with pesky ads that pop out at random times.

Despite the simple gameplay, players from various parts of the world only recognized the game after adding a share feature. And since players are guessing the same word for each day, Twitter user Elizabeth S (@irihapeta) designed a spoiler-free emoji grid that allows players to share their results with others on Twitter or Facebook.

However, users can still opt to just share the word with their family and friends, but where’s the fun in that?

As Wordle continues to gain popularity among gamers and word puzzle lovers, other developers are trying to replicate it. Some versions are even charging fees to download and play the game.

Remember, Wordle is free-to-play and is limited to browsers, so don’t try finding the game on the AppStore or PlayStore as you might run into a replica instead.

The game’s success continues to astound Wardle as it grows to levels beyond his imagination. But with the demand among players and him being only one person, Wardle sold the game to The New York Times by the end of January, making it a part of the media outlet’s subscription puzzle service.

Wardle, in the meantime, promises that the game will remain free-to-play and preserve users’ progress.

“The song is about the cliché feeling whenever you break up with someone or when you fall out of love with someone. Finn Wolfhard no stranger to ‘Ghostbuster,’ relishes ‘Afterlife’ role

CANADIAN actor Finn Wolfhard who is best known for his starring role as Mike Wheeler in the critically acclaimed Netflix Original Series Stranger Things and as Richie Tozier in the blockbuster horror feature IT, now stars in Columbia Pictures’ Ghostbusters: Afterlife.

Directed by Jason Reitman (Juno, Up in the Air) and produced by Ivan Reitman, Ghostbusters: Afterlife is the next chapter in the original Ghostbusters universe. The film is written

by Gil Kenan and Jason Reitman.

In the film, when a single mom and her two kids arrive in a small town, they begin to discover their connection to the original ghostbusters and the secret legacy their grandfather left behind.

Wolfhard joins Carrie Coon, Mckenna Grace, and Paul Rudd in the lead cast.

The 19-year-old actor says he’s been a Ghostbusters fan since a very young age.

“I think they’re timeless movies, because they are characters that everyone can relate to, and they’re such iconic performances so they’re hard to forget,” he explains. “My parents showed me those movies at a really young age, so I was lucky. But, then again, I don’t know a kid that’s my age that doesn’t know what Ghostbusters is. It’s iconic.”

Wolfhard says that his character, Trevor, is “a normal, awkward teenager. He’s a city kid from Chicago who gets evicted and ends up

in the middle of nowhere – Summerville, Oklahoma. He’s shell-shocked, there’s no cell service, he’s annoyed about everything – until he finds a girl he falls for, and it all becomes worth it to him.”

Trevor, who is still too young to drive but is obsessed with cars, is the one to discover the iconic but long-abandoned Ecto-1 covered under a sheet in the barn. At first, he is the only one who knows it exists and begins to tinker with it to bring it back to life.

Though he didn’t get to physically drive the car, Wolfhard says it was an honor to interact with the iconic machine. “In one sequence, Trevor is in the Ecto-1 ripping through this giant wheat field,” he says. “He loses control and flies off and hits the road.”

This Sunday, we are featuring the shih tzu from the “Shih Tzu Breed Information” by the American Kennel Club.

About the Breed

If a dog has displayed an unusual behavior that can potentially harm him or her, please bring your pet to the vet to check if there is a medical condition that needs to be treated. If the medical condition has been ruled out, it is time to find out any environmental trigger or programming by humans in the household that has cause said behavior. You can ask for help from the vet or a dog/cat behavior expert to determine the psychological cause.

HENEVER you see your pet cat or dog chasing its own tail, we usually say, “That’s funny and cute, do it again!”

Then you will force your pet to actually do it again so you can get a picture of your pet doing it. And you will be so proud of your pet that you will post it on social media, saying your pet knows this “trick”.

Well, you are in for a surprise because you are, essentially, making your pet’s health problem worse.

Did you know that when a pet chases its own tail it is a sign that your pet may be starting to develop a compulsive disorder? Yes, animals may develop such a disorder, too. It is not like the OCD (obsessive compulsive disorder) in humans but it is somewhat similar. With dogs, they call this “canine compulsive disorder” or CCD. And when this disorder gets out of hand, they call this “self-mutilation.”

It usually starts with unusual behavior or actions that may seem silly or funny at first. If not addressed immediately and properly, it may worsen and the pet may harm himself or destroy anything in the surroundings. Worse, the dog’s action my even lead to is death.

Some dogs or cats may start to chase their tail around but they are not necessarily in a mood for playing. Once they catch their tail, sometimes they act as if they are doing it to relieve an itch or something. But then, you will notice that they do this a number of times in a week. Others tend to really bite their tail or other parts of their body. It is not a very deep bite at first but later on, the bite gets deeper and deeper. There have been cases that the pet completely bit off his tail or a portion of his body. Others express this disorder by constant or frequent licking of certain parts of the body until that part no longer has fur, or looks sore as if the pet has developed a rash.

Self-mutilation is a serious health problem. What causes this may be medical or psychological. A medical issues must be ruled out if indeed, the cause is psychological. To do this, a complete check-up by the vet should be done first. If there is no medical issue and the unusual behaviour continues, the environment of the pet resides must be reviewed and assessed. The pet maybe in a very stressful situation and it is experiencing an extreme case of anxiety. The pet may have found self-mutilation as its coping mechanism with the said situation.

While it is true that certain breeds display particular behaviors, these behaviors do not necessarily cause them to hurt themselves. Thus, it is easy to see the difference if it is just a matter of genetics or if there is a serious problem going on already. And, most of the time, these behaviors start as a coping mechanism to relieve their stress.

How do you deal with “self mutilation” if it has come to that point already? An associate professor of veterinary medicine at the Ohio State College of Veterinary Medicine, Veterinarian Meghan Herron, DVM, DACVB says, “It’s a challenge and may require psychotropic medications as well as reduction of triggering events,”. Herron further states that it helps knowing what triggers the behavior in these pets. But before anything else, ruling out the medical issues must be done first.

Dr. Michelle Posage says it is wise to have your vet run the following tests for your pet first: • Physical examination • Skin scraping • Fungal testing • Impression smear • Biopsy of skin samples

What To Expect When Caring For a Shih Tzu

(Dealing With Canine Self Mutilation, Dr. Michele Posage, August 25, 2015).

Pat Miller, CPDT, training editor at Whole Dog Journal provides helpful techniques in reducing compulsive behavior in dogs. She recommends the following: Increase exercise. She says this helps wear the dog out and leaves less energy for compulsive behavior. This includes mental exercise as well as physical.

Reduce stress. She advises making a list of all the stressors you can identify that affect your dog, not just those that appear to trigger the unusual behavior.

Remove reinforcement. Often, owners mistakenly think these behaviors are cute or funny. “They reinforce the behavior with laughter and attention, and may even trigger the behavior deliberately, unaware of the harm they’re doing,” says Miller. When the behavior becomes so persistent that it’s annoying, the owner may reinforce “negative attention” when they yell at the pet to stop.

Reinforce an incompatible behavior. This is an effective part of a behavior modification program. For example, when a puppy wasn’t chasing its tail, its owners could use a high rate of reinforcement for calm behavior, especially for lying quietly on its bed. Other calm behaviors can be reinforced during potentially stimulating moments, such as sitting quietly at the door waiting for its leash rather than leaping about in excitement over the pending walk.

Now that you know that not all that is cute and funny is harmless, the next time you make your pets chase their tail around, do think twice about it if you truly love them.

THE FIVE FREEDOMS OF ANIMALS

Understanding the universal standard of animal welfare ANIMAL care and welfare have become of greater concern for the general public. Based on social media activities of the Animal Kingdom Foundation (AKF), more and more people are sharing their views, curiosity, and eagerness to understand how animals, pets and farmed animals, should be treated and cared for.

In reality, there are different ways of caring and raising animals depending on their breed, types and “usefulness”. But one way of ensuring animals are treated well and positively is to use the Five Freedoms as yardstick for satisfying the needs of the animals.

To understand the significance of the Five Freedoms, we can go back to 1964 when Ruth Harrison, a British woman, wrote “Animal Machines.”

The book vividly described the way farmed animals were treated at that time that led to an outcry from the British public. This forced the British government then to commission professor Roger Brambell to look into the welfare of farm animals.

In 1965, the committee came up with an 85-page “Report of the Technical Committee to Inquire into the Welfare of Animals Kept under Intensive Livestock Husbandry Systems,” which became known

How an animal is coping within its environment – including its physical and mental state—is considered when discussing the welfare of an animal.

The Five Freedoms are as follows:

Freedom from Hunger and Thirst: by making sure the animal has ready access to fresh water and provided a diet to maintain full health and vigor.

Freedom from Discomfort: by providing an appropriate environment including shelter and a comfortable resting area.

Freedom from Pain, Injury or Disease: by prevention or rapid diagnosis and treatment Freedom to Express Normal Behavior: by providing sufficient space, proper facilities, and company of the animal’s own kind.

Freedom from Fear and Distress: by ensuring conditions and treatment which avoid mental suffering.

When AKF started saving slaughter-bound dogs in 1999 we were highly conscious of the Five Freedoms which led us to build a shelter in 2006 with kennels that have no cages. This understanding of the Five Freedoms provided us an easy path towards the rehabilitation of the gravely traumatized dogs and has made our adoption program a success. We did not only nurse them back to great physical health but we made sure that they were also mentally fit to be welcomed by new loving families.

AKF is also campaigning for a cage-free farm system for hens.

The impact and use of the Five Freedoms is widespread across the world. This code which enforces common sense in treating all kinds of animals is considered the gold standard in animal welfare.

The Five Freedoms encompass both the mental and physical well-being of animals. Every pet owner should know this manual and every farm-animal practitioner must adhere to this code. It is not complicated. It encourages common sense purely in the way that all animals should be treated humanely.

Owning a dog is not just a privilege; it’s a responsibility. They depend on us for, at minimum, food and shelter, and deserve much more. When you take a dog into your life, you need to understand the commitment that dog ownership entails.

1. On Health: Because of their heavy coats and short faces, Shih Tzu do not tolerate heat well and are not good swimmers. Most Shih Tzu are generally healthy, and responsible breeders screen their stock for health conditions such as such as hip dysplasia, patellar luxation (a slipped kneecap), eye anomalies including cataracts, progressive retinal atrophy, retinal detachment, and corneal dryness and inflammation from excessive exposure to the air because of improperly closing eyelids.

2. On Grooming: A Shih Tzu with a long coat requires daily brushing. Use a good-quality wire brush with flexible pins, and layer the hair to be sure you reach to the skin. A bath about every three or four weeks will help to keep the coat clean and at its best. Remember to comb the mustache and topknot daily, and gently clean the corner of the eyes with a damp cloth. To protect the Shih Tzu's eyes from being irritated, the hair on the top of the head should be trimmed short or tied up into a topknot.

If you don't want to have to spend time on your dog's coat, the Shih Tzu can look adorable when clipped into a "puppy trim" by a professional groomer. Trimming nails and cleaning ears should be part of the Shih Tzu's grooming routine.

3. On Exercise: The Shih Tzu was bred to be a house companion. As such, they require minimal exercise. Short daily walks with their owner and indoor playtime will satisfy the activity needs of this small, short-legged companion.

4. On Training: Training a Shih Tzu can be both an amusing and a frustrating experience. The breed tends to charm his owner into letting him have his own way, which can result in a chubby, less-thancompletely-housebroken pet who is difficult to groom. Because Shih Tzu are such people dogs, training methods based on praise and rewards work best.

Harsh corrections should not be used with this breed.

Introduce desired new behaviors a bit at a time, be firm, and never give in while the dog is misbehaving.

If he nips or jumps up on you, ignore him until he settles down, then praise him. Early socialization and puppy training classes are recommended and help to ensure that the Shih Tzu grows into a well-adjusted, well-mannered companion. When enrolling in a puppy class, be sure that the training methods used in the class are based on positive reinforcement.

5.On Nutrition: The Shih Tzu should do well on a high-quality dog food, whether commercially manufactured or home-prepared with your veterinarian's supervision and approval. Any diet should be appropriate to the dog's age (puppy, adult, or senior). Some dogs are prone to getting overweight, so watch your dog's calorie consumption and weight level. Treats can be an important aid in training, but giving too many can cause obesity. Learn about which human foods are safe for dogs, and which are not. Check with your vet if you have any concerns about your dog's weight or diet.

Clean, fresh water should be available at all times.

History

When you own a Shih Tzu, you own a little bit of Chinese history. Imperial breeders in the palace of the Chinese emperor developed the Shih Tzu (meaning “lion dog”) centuries ago from Tibetan breeding stock. The breed is most likely the product of crosses of two even older Sino-Tibetan breeds, the Lhaso Apso and the Pekingese.

For hundreds of years, Shih Tzu lived the life of royal lap warmers and were pampered by emperors and their families. It is said emperors would give valuable gifts to breeders of Shih Tzu who produced the most beautiful and affectionate dogs.

The breed remained hidden behind palace walls, virtually unknown to the outside world, until the1930s.

Breed clubs formed in Peking and later England further refined the breed, not without much debate among fanciers as to proper type. The Shih Tzu entered the AKC Stud Book in 1969.

Since then, the Shih Tzu has been one of the most popular toy dogs here and in the United Kingdom. And they still treat their owners, no matter who they might be, like royalty. Owners as diverse as Queen Elizabeth II and Miley Cyrus have succumbed to the Shih Tzu’s exotic charms.”
