Uptick in cases ‘worrisome’ Imminent surge feared due to Omicron, may trigger higher alert level By Willie Casas
T
HE daily positivity rate in Metro Manila rose to more than 5 percent on Monday, raising concerns about an imminent upsurge in COVID-19 cases beyond a holiday uptick.
As the number of new cases doubled to 889 on Wednesday, up from 421 on Tuesday, the Palace, the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases (IATF), doctors and pandemic researchers said the increase in cases could be due to the highly contagious Omicron variant of the coronavirus.
The independent OCTA Research Group said it expects new COVID-19 cases to hit 1,200 to 2,000 cases nationwide on December 30. OCTA fellow Dr. Guido David said in Metro Manila, the positivity rate has increased to 8.4 percent.

“We are worried. The IATF is worried, the President is worried. Malacañang is worried and all Filipinos should be, as well. We all have a responsibility,” said acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles. But amid the rising concern, the Department of Health said the rise in the daily positivity rate was “expected” due to people’s increased mobility during the holiday season. “That is natural because we’re still in a pandemic. Hospitals reset ‘holiday’ action vs. PhilHealth By Willie Casas and Macon Ramos-Araneta THE Private Hospitals Association Philippines (PHAPI) announced on Wednesday that the plan for a “PhilHealth holiday” has been suspended. PHAPI president Dr. Jose de Grano said the plan to protest the non-payment of claims by the state-owned Philippine Health Insurance Corp. (PhilHealth) was put on hold after patient groups sought advice on what they could do during such a holiday. PHAPI had earlier encouraged its members to not accept PhilHealth deductions for their services from Jan. 1 to 5, 2022. PhilHealth said on Tuesday it was still checking the unpaid claims of seven Iloilo hospitals that will no longer renew their accreditation with the state insurer come January. “Actually, we are reconciling the Next page
