Typhoon victims to get land

Duterte orders distribution of idle govt lands to displaced, poor people By Vito Barcelo and Rio N. Araja DRIVE-THRU BLESSING.

P

RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte has ordered the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and the Department of Agrarian Reform (DAR) to distribute idle government lands to Filipinos who were displaced by typhoon “Odette.”

The rector of the Minor Basilica of the Black Nazarene (Quiapo Church), Hernando ‘Ding’ Coronel, leads the drive-thru blessing of replica images of the Black Nazarene right outside the church at Plaza Miranda on December 28, 2021. The blessing always takes place before the annual processional activity or ‘Traslacion’ that will be suspended for the second year in a row because of the COVID-19 pandemic. Norman Cruz

“My advice is, if you’ll rehabilitate a community, and you would want to look for the space, if it’s government land, give away all of it,” Duterte said during his pre-taped “Talk to the People” public briefing. “Those idle government lands… better give it to the people right away,” he said. He said he told DENR to distribute the unused government lands, saying “whether they were victims of the typhoon or not, let’s just give what we can give.” He said most of those affected by the typhoon were “marginalized” and “very poor” and had no other place to go. Disaster officials estimate that 508,785 houses were damaged by Odette, 167,417 of which were destroyed. These were in Mimaropa and Western Visayas, Central Visayas, Eastern Visayas, Zamboanga Peninsula, Northern Mindanao, Davao region, Next page

Philhealth appeals to hospitals P5k cash aid for Odette-hit families set for release to reconsider ‘holiday’ protest By Vito Barcelo, Julito G. Rada, Alena Mae Flores and Othel Campos

By Macon Ramos-Araneta, Maricel V. Cruz and Willie Casas THE country’s state health insurer urged hospitals on Tuesday not to push through with a proposed five-day “PhilHealth holiday” – quickly branded by a senator as a “major cause of concern.” PhilHealth spokesperson Dr. Shirley Domingo told a government public briefing that the agency was continu-

ously paying hospital claims, and it was meeting with other hospitals to reconcile unpaid claims. Senator Nancy Binay said the situation merited an emergency meeting of the Philhealth board and all members “that are cabinet secretaries. Not just representatives should attend.” According to the senator, it was sad that some hospitals had to resort to this. Next page

New Year revelers told to shun ‘torotot,’ firecrackers to be safe

THE government is expediting the list of families who will receive the P5,000 cash aid due to the effects of Typhoon Odette, Malacanang said Tuesday. Cabinet Secretary and acting presidential spokesman Karlo Nograles said the distribution of the cash assistance is similar to the distribution of cash aid under the government’s social amelioration program during the lockdowns due to COVID-19. He said government agencies aim to finalize the list of beneficiaries on Tuesday and release the list the following day. “The fund will be downloaded to the local government units monitored by the DSWD and the DILG,” Nograles said, referring to the Department of Next page
