No Christmas break; No thanks to ‘Odette’ Gov’t, UN lead in nonstop relief efforts
Christmas greetings from nation’s leaders President Rodrigo Duterte:
Duterte
Gesmundo
Velasco
“I wish all the Filipino Christians all around the world a blessed and meaningful Christmas. May the light that this season brings fill us with hope and courage as we continue to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic.” “We have been blessed much with the birth of Christ, let us share this blessing with others. Maligayang Pasko sa ating lahat (Merry Christmas to all of us).” “May we all be united in spreading love, compassion, and happiness to our families and friends, and even those whom we need to reach out to. This will lead us to open our hearts and our homes, especially for those who are most in need so that they, too, may have joy and hope while we all work together towards better days ahead.”
Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo:
“The continuing uncertainties of the current pandemic coupled with the recent devastation brought about by Typhoon Odette have had a disruptive impact on our lives.” “These challenges and trials, however, only put into focus our resilience, Romualdez benevolence, and solidarity as a people and as a nation.” “May those of us who are fortunate enough to be with our loved ones spare more than a thought for those who are alone, lost, and abandoned.”
Speaker Lord Allan Velasco: “As we celebrate the merriest season of the year, let us not forget to offer prayers and assistance to the victims of Super Typhoon Odette.” Next page
HE United Nations kicked off a campaign Friday to raise $107.2 million (about P5.36 billion) in aid for victims of Typhoon Odette (international name: Rai), which ravaged the Philippines last week. Meanwhile, President Rodrigo Duterte ordered all government agencies to use their assets in the recovery and rehabilitation efforts and said he would work through the Christmas holidays because people were starving and are getting sick in typhoon-struck areas. The money will be targeted towards 530,000 people in the worst-affected areas, who are in dire need of drinking water, sanitation facilities, food and emergency shelter, the organization said. “There is momentum for full support,” UN Resident Coordinator in the Philippines Gustavo Gonzalez told a virtual press conference earlier. “Now the challenge is that all of this announcement and solidarity is rapidly translated into concrete actions.” Next page
