POPE PRAYS FOR PH: ‘MAY STO. NIÑO BRING CONSOLATION, HOPE’ POPE FRANCIS has assured the many victims of Typhoon Odette that struck the Philippines Thursday last week that they are close to his heart as he expressed hope that the Sto. Niño (Child Jesus) will bring them comfort. "I express my closeness to the people of the Philippines struck by a strong typhoon, which has destroyed many homes. May the Santo Niño bring consolation and hope to the families most in need; and may he inspire concrete help in all of us," the Pope
said after leading the midday Angelus on Sunday. "The first concrete help is prayer," the Holy Father added. In 2013, when the country was devastated by super typhoon Yolanda, the leader of the 1.2-billion member Catholic Church also asked the faithful to join him in prayer for the Philippines. Two years later, he visited the Philippines and even held mass in Tacloban City, one of the worst-hit by Yolanda. VOL. Typhoon deaths soar to 169 PNP expects more fatalities as Odette's full horror begins to unfold
T
HE death toll soared to 169 four days after Typhoon “Odette” barreled through Mindanao and Visayas, as efforts to deliver water and food to devastated islands ramped up.
A consolidated report sent to Philippine National Police chief Gen. Dionardo Carlos showed that Central Visayas had the most number of casualties with 129, followed by Western Visayas with 22, Caraga with 10, Northern Mindanao with seven and Zamboanga Peninsula with one. The PNP report also said that 107 others were injured and 50 were missing. Bad weather drives down cases to 203 By Willie Casas THE Philippines logged on Sunday 203 new cases of COVID-19 – the lowest in almost 19 months – with a low case reporting due to Typhoon Odette, the Department of Health said. “The low case report is due to the suspension of the operations of four labs on December 17, and failure to submit data from 41 labs to the COVID-19 Document Repository System because of Typhoon Odette,” the DOH said in its Case Bulletin 645. “Based on data in the last 14 days, the 45 [laboratories] contribute, on average, 15.4 percent of samples tested and 1.8% of positive individuals,” the DOH added. The DOH also reported 64 new fatalities, bringing the death toll to 50,739. “This issue is currently being coordinated with the Epidemiology and Next page

UK: ‘Variant zone’ for highest risk THE United Kingdom is now considered a "variant zone" of COVID-19 – a category reserved for nations where the risk is the highest – Germany's health authority said. "The United Kingdom and Northern Ireland are very strongly affected by COVID-19. A new variant, very contagious, has also been found," the Germany Ministry of Foreign Affairs said on its website. More than 65,000 new COVID cases were confirmed in London over the
past seven days, with 26,418 cases reported in the last 24 hours – the highest number since the start of the pandemic. Britain has been added to Germany's list of COVID high-risk countries, which will mean tighter travel restrictions. The decision is a response to the rapid spread of the Omicron variant, which forced London's mayor Sadiq Khan to declare a "major incident" on Saturday in the British capital. Next page
