RESIDENT Rodrigo Duterte said he wanted to “shoot dead” the new threat posed by the Omicron variant of COVID-19, even as his government is prepared for the worst-case scenario and will ensure the safety of the public, the Palace said Monday.

WHO warns world of ‘very high’ risk amid spread of deadly strain THE World Health Organization warned Monday the new COVID-19 Omicron variant posed a “very high” risk globally, despite uncertainties about the danger and contagion levels of the new strain. The UN health agency said the COVID strain, first discovered in southern Africa, was a “highly divergent variant with a high number of mutations... some of which are concerning and may be associated with immune escape potential and higher transmissibility.” “The likelihood of potential further spread of Omicron at the global level is high,” WHO cautioned in a technical note. The Philippines said it would temporarily suspend plans to allow fully vaccinated tourists entry, in a bid to prevent the variant taking off in a country where most of the population remains unvaccinated.
Emerging Infectious Diseases approved the recommendation to keep Metro Manila under Alert Level 2 from Dec. 1 to 15, acting spokesperson Karlo Nograles said. Also on Monday, economists urged the government to consider preemptive measures to prevent the entry of the Omicron variant, saying failure to do this might again lead to punishing lockdowns that would derail the economy’s recovery. The entry of the heavily mutated Omicron coronavirus variant is a matter of when, and not if, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III warned Monday. But under Alert Level 2, the second lowest in the new COVID-19 alert level system, certain establishments and activities are allowed at 50% capacity Next page

PH holds vaxxed tourist entry, dampens recovery By Willie Casas and Maricel V. Cruz THE Philippines has temporarily suspended a decision to allow fully vaccinated tourists entry in a bid to prevent a new, heavily mutated coronavirus variant taking off in the country where most of the population remains unvaccinated. The decision is a major blow to tour-
ism operators across the archipelago, which have been devastated by a plunge in international visitors and restrictions on domestic travel since borders shut in March 2020. Tourism is a major driver of the country’s economy, accounting for nearly 13 percent of gross domestic product in 2019, when more than 8 million people
visited, official data shows. That slumped to 5.4 percent last year as tourist arrivals plummeted 82 percent to 1.48 million. It comes as the government on Monday launched a three-day vaccination drive targeting 9 million people as young as 12 in an effort to accelerate the roll-out of Next page
