Graveyards turn silent as gov’t bans visit to cemeteries today THOUSANDS of people flocked to cemeteries on Thursday for their last chance to visit dead loved ones as graveyards close their doors to the public today ahead of All Saints’ Day to prevent overcrowding and a possible surge in COVID-19 cases. Filipinos usually pour into cemeteries on November 1 for the ancient Christian tradition, many holding family reunions at the gravesites of relatives. But for the second year in a row, the government has ordered the shuttering of cemeteries for fear the “day of the dead” could turn into a coronavirus superspreader event. An official tally shows more than 60,000 people have poured into the sprawling Manila North Cemetery over the past few days where many poor people live in shanties and the mausoleums. After passing through a temperature check, relatives placed small bouquets of white flowers and lit candles on tombs – and then left. Hours before the gates were locked Thursday, Eloisa Sebastian visited the grave of her 60-year-old mother, Erly, who died suddenly in April. “We used to run to her whenever we had problems so it’s difficult to accept (she’s gone),” Sebastian told AFP. “I still cry almost every day, even at work.”

THE government is planning to hire more vaccinators—including dentists—as the country gets ready to inoculate minors aged 12 to 17 against COVID-19, the Department of Health said Thursday. Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire said they are also doing this in preparation for the administering of booster shots to health care workers and senior citizens, and a third dose to immunocompromised persons. In an interview on ANC, Vergeire said the pediatric vaccination and the booster shots would mean an additional 10 million people. “So we are looking at adding more

going to do 100 percent, and we understand that’s what they’re proposing and that’s the plan because of the downward trend of our COVID-19 cases,” she said in Filipino. Binay also warned it was too early to relax quarantine restrictions.
