SUPERSPREADER? A day after Health Secretary Francisco Duque III warned that public complacency amid eased community quarantine restrictions could lead to a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, the Manila Bay Coordinating Office on Friday extended the area of the Manila Baywalk Dolomite Beach from 140 meters to 200 meters as thousands of visitors flock to the area at any given time. 'We will extend it as needed. If we see a surge of visitors this coming weekend, we have provisions to extend the area up to 300 meters. By that time, the area will reach 12,000 square meters or 1.2 hectares, which we project can accommodate 5,000 people at any given time,' MBCO Deputy Executive Director Jacob Meimban Jr. said.

Araja and Jun David THE second phase of pediatric vaccination against COVID-19 began Friday, as the government rolled out the campaign to the entire National Capital Region. To mark the start of the Phase II, ceremonial vaccinations were held at Cardinal Santos Medical Center, Ospital ng Paranaque and Quezon City General Hospital with DOH Undersecretary Roger Tong-an and Department of Interior Local Government Undersecretary Jonathan Malaya attending the ceremonies.

Flores and Macon Ramos-Araneta THE chairman of the House committee on energy on Friday supported a Department of Energy (DOE) recommendation to amend the Oil Deregulation Law, to allow the government to intervene to address sudden and prolonged oil price hikes. Pampanga Rep. Juan Miguel Macapagal Arroyo said he received a letter from Energy Secretary Alfonso Cusi requesting Congress to amend the Oil Deregulation Law to provide a framework for government intervention, and to require the unbundling of the cost of retail products to determine their true and the passon costs. "I welcome the proposal of the DOE to amend the Oil Deregulation Law after oil prices escalated over the past eight weeks,” Arroyo said in a statement. “As chairman of the House committee on energy, I have long pushed for a special mechanism to prevent overpricing in emergency situations. The Oil Deregulation Law does not give oil companies blanket authority to take advantage of consumers.”
