Magsayo kayoes Mexican, sets up title bout FILIPINO Mark Magsayo turned an imminent loss into an electrifying win, knocking out Mexico’s Julio Ceja 50 seconds into the 10th round of their World Boxing Council featherweight title eliminator Saturday at T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas in the undercard of Manny Pacquiao’s fight against Yordenis Ugas. Behind on the scorecards after a sound beating from the Mexican in the middle rounds, Magsayo slowly recovered and saw an opening in the 10th, landing a vicious right straight that snapped Ceja’s head back. Magsayo soon landed a solid right hook to the jaw of the Mexican to finally put him down

Ceja remained winless in nearly four years and dropped to 32-5-1 (28 KOs), with his last victory coming in November 2017. CITING the continuing rise in the virus reproduction rate outside Metro Manila, the independent OCTA Research Group on Sunday said the country could see 20,000 fresh COVID-19 cases a day within two weeks. OCTA Research fellow Guido David said hitting 20,000 cases a day was very likely because the reproduction number—or the number of people one patient can infect—has been greater than 1. Nationwide, it stands at 1.45 and is still rising. Metro Manila, which was placed under a two-week lockdown earlier this month, saw its reproduction rate fall from 1.9 to 1.67 this week, an indication he Next page

WITH international drug manufacturers still overwhelmed by new orders for the coronavirus vaccine, tripartite agreements for securing COVID-19 jabs have been put on hold, National Task Force Against COVID-19 spokesman Restituto Padilla said Sunday. Vaccine makers Moderna, AstraZeneca and Johnson & Johnson were still not accepting new tripartite agreements, Padilla said. "Moderna and AstraZeneca have already said they do not want to enter into agreements until they finish their current delivery. The same is true of Johnson & Johnson,” he said. This comes in the wake of Senator

Majority Leader Juan Miguel Zubiri's call to the Senate to probe reports that tripartite agreements for vaccine procurement have not been signed. This developed as the Philippines received one million doses of procured Sinovac COVID-19 vaccines on Saturday, together with the second tranche of 260,800 Sinopharm vaccine doses donated by the Chinese government. A total of 26.5 million doses of Sinovac have so far been delivered to the country, of which 24.6 million doses were procured by the national government.
